Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Retrace your steps to the days when it was fun to play with art supplies and just make something all your own. “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” means picking up a pencil, doing a series of simple, low-stress exercises and turning it all into hours of satisfying, deeply meditative activity. Watch yourself progress, week after week, from basic student to someone who will want a sketchbook firmly in hand. Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m., Feb. 4, 6 wks. Course #AT307 01/CRN 30517 John St. Peter, Fee $129

Drawing and Painting Spring Flowers Flower lovers and artists alike can plant potted bulbs a few weeks before the class starts. Bulbs such as paper white narcissus, amaryllis, tulips, and crocuses do well. Bring specimens to class, and we’ll draw different stages of growth throughout the session. Exercises build drawing skills, and strengthen skills by observing plant structure, and drawing with different media such graphite, ink, and water color. In-class demonstrations include lighting a specimen, drawing from living subject and learning to create sense of dimension. Beginner and experienced participants are welcome. No class March 21 and April 18.

Life Drawing Studio This class is for those with some nude-figure drawing experience who are ready to move to the next level. After a series of brief warm-up gestures, the model maintains one long pose for the duration of the session, giving you time to develop your drawings and focus on aspects of the figure that give you trouble. Short slide presentations are part of the course. Personalized critiques focus on accuracy of gesture, proportion and artistic anatomy. Kevin Gorges has studied art in the U.S. and abroad and has taught in Ireland and Italy.

Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., March 7, 6 sessions. Course #AT302 01/CRN 30917 Lisa Coddington, Fee $149

Wednesday, 6:30 to 9 p.m., April 2, 6 wks. Course # AT 314 01/CRN 31677 Kevin Gorges, Fee $145

Beginning Drawing Explore drawing in a supportive environment where creativity is encouraged. Learn basic skills for drawing from life, incorporating both traditional and contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing will be covered, which include using pencil, conté crayon and colored pencils. Demonstrations, art history and critiques enhance the work done in class. John St. Peter has a Master of Fine Arts degree.

Charcoal Landscape Drawing Produce drawings that look like the scene you’re viewing. Learn techniques to use charcoal and plastic erasers like broad-stroke brushes that sweep across the paper similar to painting a landscape in oil or watercolor. Not only an exciting way to produce powerful black and white drawings, but this style also mimics oil and watercolor painting. Only a few inexpensive materials are needed. Michael McGuire is a professional artist and illustrator in Santa Fe.
