Geologic Hike Diablo Canyon

Hidden Passage Copper Canyon

Mesa Prieta Petroglyphs

This outing will explore the volcanic story behind Diablo Canyon, and provide sweeping vistas of the Jemez Mountains and White Rock Canyon. Geologist Kirt Kempter will lead the group on a 2 mile hike that climbs 450 feet in elevation, providing overlooks down into Diablo Canyon. The geologic story from above reveals a volcano that created explosive eruptions, a cinder cone, widespread lava flows, and finally a lava lake, still frozen in time. If you have hiked Diablo Canyon before, this will certainly provide a different perspective on this remarkable feature. Participants will meet at a designated parking area on Camino La Tierra, and should bring appropriate hiking attire, picnic lunches and water. Walking sticks recommended.

This one day hiking adventure will explore a unique, hidden canyon in the Abiquiu area. A 3.5 mile round trip hike will take us through a small canyon that exposes brilliantly colored rock layers between the Rio Grande Rift and the Colorado Plateau. VVe then ascend 750 feet to an overlook of Copper Canyon, a majestic canyon off the tourist trail. Wonderful photography opportunities with superb geology. Discussions will focus on the geologic wonders of Copper Canyon and the changing shape of the landscape, as persistent geologic and erosional forces have sculpted the land over geologic time. This hike is moderate in difficulty, including some parts that are off trail on irregular topography. Participants should bring appropriate hiking attire, picnic lunch, water, and cookies to share. Participants should be able to hike Pichacho Peak or Atalaya Peak to join this outing.

This one-mile round trip hike led by Dr. Martha Yates takes you through one of the most stunning petroglyph sites in New Mexico, famous for its shield figures, many flute-playing animals, water snakes and Spanish crosses from the historic period. Visit the Wells Petroglyph Preserve owned by the Archaeological Conservancy. At only 156-acres, this portion of the Mesa contains more than 9,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (2,000-5,000 years old) to modern times. For the last 24 years, the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, a non-profit with numerous national awards for its work, has been helping to preserve the Mesa's cultural heritage. Over 45,000 images of the estimated 80,000 on the Mesa have now been recorded by the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project.

Large and Quick Figure Drawing

Observational Drawing with Feeling

A dynamic class in which students are urged to stand, work in large scale and to draw quickly. Students will learn to disengage from preconceived notions and to work expressively with feeling while referencing human anatomy and a study of planes in this more sculptural approach to drawing. Simple, straightforward methods to analyze artwork and solve problems are taught. Students will learn to see shapes and values and use them to make stronger, more cohesive, and expressive art that applies easily to beginners and advanced students. Using a model to study foreshortening, anatomy, and form, students will strengthen all aspects of their work. Classes include a drawing demonstration by the instructor, individual instruction and will conclude with a group critique and discussion of concepts in each class.

Students will be taught skills that will enable them to freely make more expressive art and have the tools to solve draftsmanship dilemmas. Using human models, still lifes, photographs and imagination, students will strengthen all aspects of their artwork. Most classes have a drawing demonstration by the instructor and each person receives individual instruction. Each class concludes with a voluntary group critique and discussion of concepts.

Wes Anderson and Independent Cinema

During the l 990s and early 2000s, Hollywood studios established subsidiaries Fox Searchlight Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, and Paramount Vantage to finance innovative and cutting-edge films, formerly the realm of independent directors. This move led to a shift in the ways independent films are produced, creating a distinction between those financed by Hollyv.-ood's subsidiaries and those produced by truly independent studios and freelance directors. This raises the question: can we consider a film independent if it has conglomerate financing behind it? In other words, is an independent film defined by its budget or, rather, by a certain spirit? This course will attempt to answer this question through the analysis of the work of independent filmmaker Wes Anderson, whose alternative and relatively low-budget films launched his career. #3944 Ricciardelli $149 In Person
