While our classes are taught by professional, working artists, none of our courses offers credit toward a degree. Life Drawing Drawing the nude — from quick, warm-up, gesture drawings to two long studies per evening — improves the student’s drawing skills, awareness and understanding of one of the oldest traditions in art. Short slide presentations of master works or anatomy and personalized critiques are part of the course. Some drawing experience is recommended. Painting the Landscape in Charcoal

Explore drawing in a supportive environment where creativity is encouraged. You’ll learn basic skills for drawing from life, incorporating both traditional and contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing will be covered, which include using pencil, conte crayon and colored pencils. Demonstrations, art history and critiques enhance the work done in class. Produce drawings that look like the scene you’re viewing. Learn techniques to use charcoal and plastic erasers like broad-stroke brushes that sweep across the paper similar to painting a landscape in oil or watercolor. Students will learn how to make gesso and their own wax colors instead of buying expensive supplies from art supply stores. this course is an investigation of abstract painting using fluid and gel mediums. Employing tools such as painting knives and squeegees, as well as brushes, the class will experiment with transparent effects, including layering, on various types of surfaces. Structured weekly assignments will bring together information about value, color and composition with abstract approaches to acrylic. Still Life Painting NEW! Students will examine still-life painting by studying works of other artists and creating their own examples. Still life painting is a kind of painting that depicts mostly inanimate objects and subject matters, typically commonplace objects that may be either natural or man-made, for the sake of their form, color, texture, and composition. Artists have more freedom in the layout of design elements in a composition than with paintings of other types. This class will be taught in oil, but acrylics are welcome. Small Works NEW! Focusing on panels 9 x 12 inches or smaller, we will begin with concept, addressing composition, transferring your image, painting mediums and techniques, varnishes and framing ideas. We will be working with water soluble oil paint in combination with mediums that accelerate drying time. Each class will be structured around discussions about methods and techniques with studio time working on our individual paintings. Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Learn the art of beautiful writing using the simplest of tools, a chisel-pointed pen nib and ink. In this class, you will learn the lower and upper case letterforms of italic writing. This hands-on course allows students to explore pen, ink and paper while practicing techniques. Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay

Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting of silver particles in a nontoxic binder and water. It looks, feels and acts like clay. When heated, the binder and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. Students will practice firing with a small butane torch, an easy process that takes just minutes. Decorative Painting with Milk Paint Milk paint is a durable, non-fading, non-toxic, waterbased paint that adheres beautifully to porous surfaces such as wood. Rich earth colors can be used to highlight traditional as well as contemporary designs. This workshop will cover preparing the surface, mixing and applying milk paint, burnishing, texturing and other decorative techniques and clear coating. Personal Enrichment Valles Caldera Ecology Hike on the East Rim OFF-CAMPUS This 7.5 mile, round-trip hike explores the overall ecology of the upper reaches of the Pajarito Plateau to the edge of the mountainous rim of the Caldera. On our way to Canada Bonita, we walk through an edge of the Cerro Grande fire into Las Conchas fire path of June 2011. A primary driver of biodiversity in the Jemez Mountains, periodic fires have shaped the landscape for millennia. Tewa Old Houses OFF-CAMPUS This field trip investigates the ecology of the Ojo Caliente Valley and how the ancestral Pueblo people wove themselves into this landscape. Get a broad overview of the valley and the four big sites that remain, then walk into an Old House site normally closed to the public, Ponsipa-Akeri, to view and discuss artifacts, room blockages and arrangements. A short hike out from the Old House allows you to view the agricultural and cultural signatures on the landscape, experiencing how the ancestral Tewa people lived on the land. Pueblo stories, prior archaeological investigations and a brief view of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo bring together the continuity of culture in this area. Join noted archaeologist Martha Yates for a midmorning hiking tour to Posi, an ancient pueblo that flourished between 1400 and 1550 A.D. The hike begins in Ojo Caliente and explores Posi-owinge and the ancient agricultural fields that surround the pueblo. Dr. Yates will introduce participants to the technological skills used by Pueblo farmers during the Pueblo IV period. Hiking Antiquity, Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Site OFF-CAMPUS This is a three- to four-hour hike through some of the most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the Rio Grande just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in northern New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing animals and historic images from Spanish settlers. Registration Register now! Continuous, semester-long registration has begun. All registrations, whether online, by phone, by fax, by mail or in person, are being accepted now. Classes start throughout the semester. Find the latest continuing education class listings on our Web site at www.sfcc.edu. Many classes fill quickly. We recommend that you register no later than four working days before the starting date of the class. You may register for most classes up until the starting date, but if you delay, the class may either be full or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Registrations cannot be accepted at classes. Class FEES Continuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are based on an estimated minimum number of students. Class fees are subject to change without notice. Please check the Web site for current information and review the refund policy before registering. SFCC User name and password SFCC assigns each student a user name. You can get your user name by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions to find your user name and password. REFUND POLICY Class fees are automatically refunded in full when: • the class or workshop is full. • the activity is cancelled. •S FCC rejects the enrollment application.
