Continuing Education art classes are designed for creative people of all levels. Whether you are a beginning or more advanced artist, Continuing Education has a class for you. While our classes are taught by professional, working artists, none of our courses offers credit toward a degree. Life Drawing Drawing the nude — from quick, warm-up, gesture drawings to two long studies per evening — improves the student’s drawing skills, awareness and understanding of one of the oldest traditions in art. Short slide presentations of master works or anatomy and personalized critiques are part of the course. Some drawing experience is recommended. Beginning Drawing

Painting the Landscape in Charcoal

Explore drawing in a supportive environment where creativity is encouraged. You’ll learn basic skills for drawing from life, incorporating both traditional and contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing will be covered, which include using pencil, conte crayon and colored pencils. Demonstrations, art history and critiques enhance the work done in class. Produce drawings that look like the scene you’re viewing. Learn techniques to use charcoal and plastic erasers like broad-stroke brushes that sweep across the paper similar to painting a landscape in oil or watercolor. Not only an exciting way to produce powerful black and white drawings, but this style also mimics oil and watercolor painting. Only a few inexpensive materials are needed. Fun With Watercolor I

This evening course is for beginning artists interested in working with acrylic paints and mediums. Structured assignments and demonstrations will help you to explore the use of liquid mediums, solid gels and opaque pastes. Color mixing, composition and surface preparation will be covered. Fun With Watercolor II The beauty and challenge of painting in transparent watercolor can now be explored in this continuation of the “Fun With Watercolor� course. Any painter who has some experience in watercolor is welcome to join this class, which explores professional-quality techniques, composition possibilities and advanced strategies for beautiful watercolors. Students will learn how to make gesso and their own wax colors instead of buying expensive supplies from art supply stores. Students will explore different techniques for painting with wax and incorporate mixed media. The focus will be on integrating encaustic painting into your own personal expression. Outdoor Sketching Workshop OFF-CAMPUS

this course is an investigation of abstract painting using fluid and gel mediums. Employing tools such as painting knives and squeegees, as well as brushes, the class will experiment with transparent effects, including layering, on various types of surfaces. Structured weekly assignments will bring together information about value, color and composition with abstract approaches to acrylic. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Santa Fe while sketching in the open air. Learn quick sketching techniques using a variety of mediums. Still Life Painting NEW! Students will examine still-life painting by studying works of other artists and creating their own examples. Still life painting is a kind of painting that depicts mostly inanimate objects and subject matters, typically commonplace objects that may be either natural or man-made, for the sake of their form, color, texture, and composition. Artists have more freedom in the layout of design elements in a composition than with paintings of other types. This class will be taught in oil, but acrylics are welcome. It is helpful for those experiencing burnout or transitions in their work or simply longing for more creativity. Process painting raises your level of creativity which opens up a freedom from judgements or analyzing. Using inexpensive materials, we paint without concern for skill or artistic merit. All supplies are provided by the instructor. This class is suitable for an experienced artist or the novice. Small Works NEW! Focusing on panels 9 x 12 inches or smaller, we will begin with concept, addressing composition, transferring your image, painting mediums and techniques, varnishes and framing ideas. We will be working with water soluble oil paint in combination with mediums that accelerate drying time. Each class will be structured around discussions about methods and techniques with studio time working on our individual paintings. The class will work exclusively with water-based media. These new methods eliminate the need for solvents and makes clean-up a snap. Explore a variety of approaches to the monoprint, including additive and subtractive methods and chine colle, the application of thin, decorative papers. Grace Mayer has an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and has been making prints in Santa Fe for many years. Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Learn the art of beautiful writing using the simplest of tools, a chisel-pointed pen nib and ink. In this class, you will learn the lower and upper case letterforms of italic writing. This hands-on course allows students to explore pen, ink and paper while practicing techniques. Students will finish class with their own samplers to keep and practice. Taught by professional calligrapher Sherry Bishop. Monday, 6 to 8 p.m., Sept. 23, 4 wks. Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay

Elevate, manipulate, re-configure, rejuvenate or otherwise transform an object of your choice into something new and wonderful. Bring an object or objects that you would like to transform. Your objects can be mundane or spectacular, a find from nature or something human-made, mass-produced or an unusual material. Jones will bring examples and help generate ideas for how to proceed. Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting of silver particles in a nontoxic binder and water. It looks, feels and acts like clay. When heated, the binder and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. Students will practice firing with a small butane torch, an easy process that takes just minutes. Veneering opens up many new options for the woodworker. This quick introduction will cover the basic techniques for applying veneer. Resources for purchasing commercial veneer will be discussed. Decorative Painting with Milk Paint Milk paint is a durable, non-fading, non-toxic, waterbased paint that adheres beautifully to porous surfaces such as wood. Rich earth colors can be used to highlight traditional as well as contemporary designs. This workshop will cover preparing the surface, mixing and applying milk paint, burnishing, texturing and other decorative techniques and clear coating. In addition to samples, students will finish a wooden coat hanger. Doug Jones has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design and exhibits around the United States. A beautiful finish highlights the woods and colors of a piece of furniture. We will cover preparation, choice of a finish, safety issues, application and techniques in this quick introduction. Personal Enrichment Valles Caldera Ecology Hike on the East Rim OFF-CAMPUS This 7.5 mile, round-trip hike explores the overall ecology of the upper reaches of the Pajarito Plateau to the edge of the mountainous rim of the Caldera. On our way to Canada Bonita, we walk through an edge of the Cerro Grande fire into Las Conchas fire path of June 2011. A primary driver of biodiversity in the Jemez Mountains, periodic fires have shaped the landscape for millennia. Tewa Old Houses OFF-CAMPUS This field trip investigates the ecology of the Ojo Caliente Valley and how the ancestral Pueblo people wove themselves into this landscape. Get a broad overview of the valley and the four big sites that remain, then walk into an Old House site normally closed to the public, Ponsipa-Akeri, to view and discuss artifacts, room blockages and arrangements. A short hike out from the Old House allows you to view the agricultural and cultural signatures on the landscape, experiencing how the ancestral Tewa people lived on the land. Pueblo stories, prior archaeological investigations and a brief view of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo bring together the continuity of culture in this area. Join noted archaeologist Martha Yates for a midmorning hiking tour to Posi, an ancient pueblo that flourished between 1400 and 1550 A.D. The hike begins in Ojo Caliente and explores Posi-owinge and the ancient agricultural fields that surround the pueblo. Dr. Yates will introduce participants to the technological skills used by Pueblo farmers during the Pueblo IV period. Other archaeological features at the site are kivas, plazas and mounded room blocks. Posi-owinge was the largest ancient village located along the Rio Ojo Caliente. Hiking Antiquity, Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Site OFF-CAMPUS This is a three- to four-hour hike through some of the most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the Rio Grande just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in northern New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing animals and historic images from Spanish settlers. SFCC User name and password SFCC assigns each student a user name. You can get your user name by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions to find your user name and password. REFUND POLICY Class fees are automatically refunded in full when: • the class or workshop is full. • the activity is cancelled. •S FCC rejects the enrollment application. If you drop a class, your class fee is automatically refunded based on the following: Classes of three or more sessions • I f you drop a class before the second session, the full class fee will be refunded. • I f you drop a class after the second session, no refund will be given. Classes of one or two sessions • I f you drop a class at least one day before the starting date, the full class fee will be refunded. • I f you drop a class less than one day before the starting date, no refund will be given. Some classes have special refund policies. This information is listed in the class description. Please allow three to five weeks for processing a refund. Class CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS A class will be closed when it reaches maximum enrollment, so register early. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled three business days prior to the starting date of the class, and those registered will be notified of the cancellation by phone. To make contacting you easier, please provide day and evening phone numbers with your registration. Refunds will be processed automatically for classes cancelled by SFCC. SFCC reserves the right to cancel any class. Class locations, dates, times and instructors are subject to change without notice. Class Locations Classes are held at Santa Fe Community College and at other locations in and around Santa Fe. The location of your class will be noted on the confirmation you receive by mail, or you can check at SFCC’s Information Desk, main entrance, 505-428-1000.
