01. 2022-2023 Highlights SFAI Transcript Project
ollowing the declaration of bankruptcy by the San Francisco Art Institute's board of F directors, alumni were not able to request SFAI transcripts. In response, SFAA, along with the generous help of former registrar Jose de los Reyes, initiated a collaborative effort with bankruptcy trustee Paul Mansdorf and the Bureau of Post-Secondary Education's (BPPE) Scott Valverde to address this issue. FAA raised the necessary funds through a targeted donation drive to enlist the S services of a third-party company (Ferrilli). Ferrilli successfully retrieved digital transcripts from the SFAI server and paper copies of transcripts dating back to before 1960 were retrieved from the vital records warehouse. As a result, the Bureau of Post-Secondary Education (BPPE) is now able to generate transcripts free of charge for alumni who attended the institution between 1960 and 2020. Furthermore, with the help of Becky Alexander and Jeff Gunderson, transcripts from earlier years have also been preserved within the SFAI Archive. In our commitment to address the critical issue of transcript retrieval for our alumni, the SFAI Transcript Fundraiser played a crucial role in securing the necessary resources. Through the generosity of our supporters, we raised a total of $14,200 (estimated cost by Ferrilli), reflecting the dedication and enthusiasm of our alumni community and donors. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the generous donors who made this endeavor possible, including John Marx, John Sanger, Paul Sack, Jose de los Reyes, 3
J eremy Stone, Linda Connor, and an anonymous contributor. Your support has been instrumental in safeguarding the academic records of our alumni. Allocation of Fundraising Donations Ferrilli - $4,662.45: A significant portion of the fundraising donations was allocated to Ferrilli, a third-party company. Their services were instrumental in successfully retrieving digital transcripts from the SFAI server. This investment ensured that our alumni could access their academic records. The final cost was only 32% of their original estimate. Vital Records - $1,067.77: We also allocated a portion of the funds to retrieve paper copies of transcripts, some of which dated back to before 1960, from the vital records warehouse. This step was essential in preserving the historical academic records of our alumni. Shelving for SFAI Archive - $428.71: Another aspect of our expense allocation was dedicated to acquiring shelving for the SFAI Archive for the transcript records dating pre 1970. Total Expenses - $6,158.93 e were able to inform alumni about the changes through an informational session W conducted in collaboration with BPPE which is also available on ouryoutube channel. To request transcripts please visithere. he remaining funds will be allocated for our next alumni exhibition at the Museum for T Northern California Art in Chico. Donations and expenses for the Transcript Fundraiser will be reflected in the financial statement of fiscal year 2023/2024.
The Spirit is Alive Event & Fundraiser n March 26th 2023, SFAA held ourThe Spirit is Alive!event at Minnesota Street O Project, spearheaded by Diana Fuller, Maria Theresa Barbist, Greg Flood, Rye Purvis, Annie Reiniger-Holleb, Alice Shaw, Christina Velazquez, and Marian Wallace. The event was both a celebration of SFAI’s 152-year history and a fundraiser for the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive, which was formed after the closure of the school to preserve its legacy and archival collections documenting the school’s history. The event was well attended by around 400 alumni, who enjoyed reconnecting with each other while eating refreshments provided by Pete Standwood (beloved proprietor of Pete’s Cafe), perusing an SFAI history wall, and watching screenings of film and video works by SFAI alumni. rtist Jennifer Locke performed at the event, as did a number of musicians, including A the Steve Nelson Jazz Quintet, Different Bird, Penelope Houston of the Avengers, Mike 4
enderson with Cabin Fever, the Mandocello Experience, and Tom Marioni who, with H some some beer-drinking friends, performedBeer DrinkingSonata for 13 Players. The event culminated in a live and silent auction which included work by over 30 SFAI alumni and former faculty members (watch videohere).

he event raised more than $10,000 from ticket sales and around $50,108from the art T auction for the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive, allowing the newly formed organization to rent space to house SFAI’s archival collections in the basement of Crown Point Press. Crown Point Press is a fine arts press in downtown San Francisco owned by Kathan Brown, herself a former printmaking instructor at SFAI. Former SFAI librarian/archivists Jeff Gunderson and Becky Alexander are currently at work in the new space, organizing the archives and creating research guides for researchers. Fundraising from the event and donations from other generous donors, in combination with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, will make it possible for them to complete a multi-year archival organization project while sharing the collections with the community and making them available to researchers. More information about the SFAI archives can be foundhere.

022 MINE: WHAT IS OURS IN THE WAKE OF EXTRACTION 2 June 16 – July 18, 2022 at The Midway Gallery, San Francisco, CA Curated by Patsy Craig he Earth system has now entered the Anthropocene, a geological age in which T plantation monocultures, pollution, and industrial-scale resource extraction are 8
amaging or destroying vital ecological systems on which the planet and its biological d diversity depend. Globally dominant modes of human existence are driving us towards ecological collapse. Due to our ethically untenable relationship to nature, the Earth System is in crisis. Moreover, large numbers of people who have done nothing to cause this crisis are most exposed to its consequences. Many come from cultural traditions that enrich and perpetuate healthy biodiversity as the means to ensure mutual flourishing. These Indigenous ‘wisdom traditions’ are widely recognised for their sustainable world views and sophisticated understanding of our interdependence within the Earth System.

rom this perspective, MINE: What is Ours in the Wake of Extraction seeks to amplify F Indigenous worldviews specifically as they pertain to land relationship and sustainability by presenting art works that render the impact of extractive industries on Indigenous communities. In this light, the artworks will also critique collectivist vs individualistic perspectives and practices of environmental stewardship. articipating Artists at Midway Gallery: Pamela Axelson, Stuart Bass, Anelice Cáceres P Patiachi, Fermín Chimatani Tayori, Nakeyo Chimatani Lobon, Paul Glaviano, Charlotta Hauksdottir, Marie-Luise Klotz, Liz Miller Kovacs, Mido Lee, Stefanie Loveday, Rayner Joao Mikiri Sihui, Brandon Moqui Yamo, Michael Naify, Guadalupe Patiachi Tayori, 9
