B A C K G R O U N D + P R O P O S A L St. Augustine, Florida, is home to miles of Intra-coastal Waterway and diverse watery landscapes. It is an ideal location for a culture that utilizes water resources as a form of transport. When the Spanish arrived in the early 1500’s they quickly established valuable shipping nodes. These, now recognized, shipping territories required guarding from the many threats that could come from the Atlantic Ocean. Fort Matanzas was one of the secondary defense constructs that protected the colonial shipping region from the Southern Approach to St. Augustine. The Fort Matanzas National Monument is one of the only remaining examples of Spanish Watchtowers in the Continental United States.

Fort Matanzas endured only eighty years of service before it was abandoned. In 1935 the National Park Service declared the Fort a National Monument, and set land aside for a visitor center. The Inhabited Landscape proposal creates a promenade of trails, constructs, and experiences that link the Atlantic Ocean to Fort Matanzas and the Intracoastal Waterway that it is protecting.

In recent years, the visitor center maintained by the National Park Service has become congested by the over 60,000 visitors that it receives annually. The Long House proposal is a physical extension of Fort Matanzas in the effort to better accommodate the growing number of visitors. The program includes:

-Meeting Hall (3000sf) -Theater (450sf) for presenting the History of the Fort -Archive (450sf) for preserving historical documents and providing study space -Park Ranger’s Offices (3 @150sf each) -Restrooms (400 sf)

The Long House was designed to minimize the impact on the contiguous landscape, allowing tidal changes and natural waterway negotiation to take their course. A propped cantilever design limits ground interaction to key moments. The construction of the Long House permits passive cooling with offset structural features. Offset Structure also created numerous vantage points throughout the construct. A longitudinal ribbon window frames the Matanzas River and floods the construct with indirect sunlight. A keynote of the design is in the connection between the physical extension (Long House) and Fort Matanzas. Infill of the Fort’s structure has been removed and replaced with the extensions Archive. The original coquina walls provide excellent climate control and insulation for the preservation of the Fort’s historical documents.

Modifying only the dirt infill and a small portion of the base maintains the Fort’s integrity, while also structurally securing the Long House.

Fort Matanzas remains the watchtower over the Matanzas River, now extending across the landscape to increase capacity for visitation.

ABSTRACT: The Long House utilizes an exposed structural system. The historic Coquina stone of Fort Matanzas was used as a foundation

that the Long House’s skeletal armature could branch out from. The addition to the fort is meant to be as noninvasive to the natural landscape of Rattlesnake Island as possible. The Fort is located on the sand of Rattlesnake Island making single pile structural footings the ideal choice for this delicate approach. The Long House seemlessly floats above the landscape with the support of wide-flange columns @30’o.c..

DX SPLIT SYSTEM: A split system is a combination of an indoor air handling unit and an outdoor condensing unit.

The indoor air handling unit contains a supply air fan and an air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger (or cooling coil), and the expansion device.

The outdoor components consist of a condensing unit and chilling unit that provide a liquid refrigerant line to the air handler. An indoor boiler and thermal expansion tank is also used to supply heat to a heating coil in the air handler when necessary.

Commercial Off-Grid Solar Solution + Generator Backup: The Conext Multi-Cluster

Three-Phase Power System is meant to harvest energy (store it, regulate it, and distribute it) from photovoltalic panels into AC breaker panels. A multicluster three-phase system consists of three to nine XW+ inverters (grouped into sets of three) physically connected and configured so that collectively they produce three-phase power. The setup of the Long House requires a 6-unit inverter setup with an emergency generator backup system.

Suspended Downlight System:

The Long House is constructed with exposed structural components. Lacking a dropped ceiling to house a standardized lighting system, the Cooper Lighting suspended series was utilized. This system easily adjusts around duct work and conduits to allow for on-site adjustablility for the contractor.

The featured downlights provide a large spectrum of lighting solutions for the variety in program that the structure houses.

LEACHFIELD:

Fort Matanzas is located on Rattlesnake Island and has limited access to standard accommodations. This includes the County sewage treatment facility. The Long House will use a Leachfield system to naturally dispose of septic waste. This system depends on a drainfield where effluent absorption and purification will occur.

2 DRAIN SYSTEM:

The Long House will have both a septic drain (for the disposal of urinal and water closet waste), and a grey water drain (for sink and appliance waste that will be sand filtered and recycled into the building’s water closets).

A Dry Pipe sprinkler system is ideal for protecting water sensitive materials. This is appropriate for the historic documents that the Long House Archive and Library will store. Water is not present in the piping until the system operates; instead, the piping is filled with air at a pressure below the water supply pressure.
