Welcome to the Autumn edition of Seymours Prestige Homes Magazine Whether period or contemporary, prestige homes are always unique which is why they require bespoke marketing strategies.

As the vibrant golden hues of autumn give us their final hurrah for the year, it’s time to wrap up warm, get comfy and spend a while perusing the fourth edition of Seymours Prestige Homes Magazine in 2023. Inside this issue you’ll find a selection of the finest properties either currently available or recently sold or let across our network. We also explore the local communities that we serve to find some seasonal inspiration - crisp winter walks provide the perfect excuse to drop into one of the many public houses throughout the county; winter warmers from three of the county’s most celebrated artisan purveyors showcase the best food (and drink) of the season; and as ‘Strictly’ graces our screens to commence the build up to festive celebrations, we interview pantomime royalty Craig Revel Horwood. Against a turbulent backdrop both internationally and at home, it has been a changeable year for local homeowners and movers, but despite market conditions Seymours Prestige Homes have continued to achieve strong results for our clients. Christmas might be just around the corner, but the remainder of the year is still ripe with opportunities for those looking to move or invest, as we continue to talk to a profusion of affluent buyers, sellers and tenants from the local community, London and further afield, who are all eager to make their move before the end of the year. If you’ve been talking about a change or this publication has ignited your desire to move or expand your property portfolio, one of our senior partners/owners of Seymours Prestige Homes would be delighted to discuss a strategy to help you achieve your moving goals. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

As the dark nights draw in, thoughts, inevitably turn to Christmas and the hope that the month of December can add some much needed sparkle. Decorating the home is a long-established tradition that dates back over 2,500 years - and according to the gurus at John Lewis, this year styling is set to be ‘bigger and more magical’ than ever before. The department store, which has become an authority all things festive, predicts oversized baubles, personalised decorations and outdoor lighting are set to be big hits with customers seeking new ways to celebrate and decorate. Dubbed the company’s Mrs Christmas, buyer Lisa Cherry says: “This year’s themes are inspired by the magic of nostalgia and the enchantment of Christmas. The brilliant in-house design team have taken inspiration from our archives, giving treasured vintage prints a new lease of life across a number of festive products.” With that in mind, Prestige Homes caught up with Rock the Heirloom, in Chobham to share their thoughts on what’s hot this festive season. ‘All about sustainability’ Amy Eld, the owner of vintage home décor store Rock the Heirloom describes herself as an ‘antiques disruptor’. Via the online store and must-visit shop which is based in Chobham, Amy sells a ‘carefully curated selection of beautiful, quirky and unique pieces that will make you smile.’ Amy believes in investing in that one piece which will make your interiors ‘pop’ and she is on hand to advise on how to achieve that perfect blend of old and new.

The shop is stacked with an array of glassware, furniture, soft furnishings and gifts all personally chosen by Amy to reflect her eclectic approach to interiors. Seasonal suggestions: “I believe it is better to go bright and bold at Christmas - the more colours the better. “But above all, sustainability is key. We are keen to do our part and I think people are looking to do their bit and Christmas décor is a good place to start. With homewares it make sense to go vintage for a festive feel. The look is also easy to achieve by using an eclectic mix of candles and sustainable natural materials you can create a lovely, colourful and vibrant Christmas look.” rocktheheirloom.co.uk

WINTER WALKS “When I was first commissioned to write the Surrey Pub Walks book, I soon realised how big my home county truly is and how little I had explored it properly during my life.“ - Matthew Ogborn

Matthew Ogborn was born in Epsom, and lived in Surbiton for most of his adult life - we talk to him about his latest book ‘Surrey Pub Walks’ to discover the best watering holes to visit this winter. Here are 7 out of the 20 walks in the book that should give you a fun insight into breadth of stunning countryside in Surrey along with a real treasure trove of delightful pubs that cater to all tastes.

Coulsdon – The Rambler’s Rest The nearest rural pub to where I grew up, the Rambler’s Rest is a buzzy pub, bar, and restaurant that boasts a massive garden backing on to the bucolic Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs Nature Reserve. You can park up right by the footpath that heads up into the wooded area that once served as a deer park for royalty like King Edward I and II. It is ideal for a pleasant family afternoon stroll that spans all the generations with the fun Narnia trail keeping the children very busy and making the grandparents feel like little kids again themselves, while the middle generation soaks up the fresh air and scenic valley views.

Surbiton & Kingston – The Spring Grove, The Albion and The Antelope This walk is one of four in the book that have an urban feel to them and multiple pubs with the two Big Smoke Brew Co pubs anchoring this lovely stroll around the area. The Antelope used to be my local and has received a great deal of acclaim, so I would like to highlight its sister pub The Albion just off Fairfield Park in the centre of Kingston. They have a classy range of beers and ciders, while they possess a gin distillery out back in the spacious outside area that doubles as a function room. The walk itself takes you from the bustling Kingston Riverside area back to Surbiton along the freshly revamped path by the River Thames.

Headley – The Cock Inn For anyone who knows the Epsom Downs and Ashtead areas of the county, there is a good chance that they will have rocked up at The Cock Inn for a drink or meal down the years. It has served punters well with the current ownership maintaining the strong menu and drinks offering that includes real ales, lagers and ciders from respected Surrey breweries. The plum location right by Headley Heath has been a perennial pull for cyclists and ramblers with this particular walk a challenging roam up and down countryside that flirts with Ranmore Vista, Cockshot Wood, Mickleham Downs and Nower Wood before returning to the Headley Heath car park opposite one of the smallest and most picturesque cricket grounds in the county.

Coldharbour – The Plough Inn I undertook this Surrey Hills walk with my Dad on a beautiful sunny day that would make even the hardest of hearts sing, the sweeping Coldharbour Common, Duke’s Warren, Milton Gore and Waterden Wood views providing the backbone of a magical meander back to The Plough Inn that has carved out an excellent reputation in the county for innovative menus and community schemes. Best to try outside of peak hours as parking is hard to find, you will be rewarded with a food and drink offering that includes a microbrewery, in-season ingredients fuelling a menu that has won awards and 6 en-suite rooms if you want to kick back in style.

Wonersh – The Grantley Arms I knew little about Wonersh or The Grantley Arms before I researched this book and I am glad I chiselled out the time to give this enchanting route a try. Halfway between Guildford and Cranleigh, Wonersh has been home to a settlement since Anglo-Saxon times and contains three Conservation Areas and three architecturally listed churches. The walk itself takes you around the village and along the Wey and Arun canal before circling up and over Chinthurst Hill. The 360-degree views here are amazing from over 100 metres above sea level before you return to the historic Young’s pub that prides itself on being a community hub with timbered exteriors, open fires and hearty food that hits the spot inside or out in the garden.

Godalming/Farncombe - The Cricketers and The Star One of my friends Daniel McCrohan, a prolific Lonely Planet author in his own right, was very helpful in creating this route which takes in the beguiling town of Godalming and the village of Farncombe. During my research phase, The Star in the old part of Godalming - that has a rich history dating back to 1832 - continually stood out thanks to the phalanx of awards that it has accrued over the last decade whether it is their superb ale and cider selection or blooming flowers that festoon the front. Add in The Cricketers on the hill above that boasts Fuller’s awards and a lovely spot to take in the evening sun, and you can’t go wrong.

Shere – The William Bray A big favourite amongst my family and friends, this bewitching stroll around one of the most beautiful places in the Surrey Hills has a little bit of everything as you venture through the picture-perfect village of Shere, along the idyllic River Tillingbourne then up and around the undulating landscape surrounding the Albury Park Estate that harks back to a time when sheep-stealers, smugglers and poachers found a refuge in the remote hills. You also end up at the William Bray pub where you can enjoy fresh seasonal produce and homemade cakes on the sunny terrace or in the small, manicured garden, conservatory and stylish dining room.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES The Strictly Come Dancing judge tells Seymours Prestige Homes why it’s good to be bad!

Craig Revel Horwood is a busy man. Not only is he gracing our TV screens twice a week on Strictly Come Dancing, but he has spent the past few months travelling the length and breadth of the country in a touring production of Annie as, wait for it… Miss Hannigan. And after his spell as the misunderstood matron, the dancerturned-choreographer-turned-presenter-turned director is starring as the very wickedest of stepmothers in Cinderalla at the New Wimbledon Theatre this Christmas. “Oh I just adore her,” says the 58-year-old Australian with this trademark drawl. “She is a true villain and great fun to play. The best thing about Cinderella is that I also have two horrible daughters which gives us scope to be extra nasty - it’s a wicked triumvirate.” “I have some really mean moments which bring in the big boos - for example when I rip up Cinderella’s invitation and shower her with the shreds saying it’s the only confetti she will ever know that is just horrible and the children get so cross. It’s wonderful. It’s what panto is all about.” Craig Revel Horwood was born in Ballerat, an old goldmining town in Victoria, Australia in 1955. The second of 5 children, he has often talked about his troubled childhood spent battling his weight, bullies and coping with his heavy-drinking father. The young Revel Horwood “had a passion” for dance but was forced to keep his dreams very much under wraps. “I went to dancing class, but you had to do it on the sly. You would have been teased to death. I would have had to have left school if people knew I was dancing,” he confesses. Aged 16 he headed for the bright lights of Melbourne, were he studied musical theatre before moving to Sidney with his alterego drag act Lavish. This led to an 8 month spot at the Lido in Paris, which in turn led to an audition for Cats in the West End and his career in musical theatre was born. Although he says he never had any great desire to leave Australia, he realised that to be successful he had to base himself where the work was. “Australia is difficult,” he explains. “Shows don’t last as long, there just aren’t as many people going to theatre. It’s hard.” Revel Horwood worked solidly as a dancer for 10 years, before being asked to produce Crazy For You in South Africa. And so a new string to his theatrical bow was added as he turned his hand to choreography and directing.

As well as several West End shows and countless tours, Craig has also worked extensively in opera, both in this country and around the world. With an Olivier Award nomination under his belt, it was no surprise then that in 2004 when the BBC was looking for a judge on a new dancing show, his name was thrown into the mix. “I was asked to audition. They wanted someone who was theatrical, who was not from the ballroom or Latin world as they already had Len [Goodman]. I went for a screen test and I got the job.” It wasn’t long before Mr Revel Horwood was being dubbed the BBC’s ‘Mr Nasty’ – delivering such barbed comments over the years as “I thought you looked like a slug wriggling in salt” (to presenter Rachel Riley); “Lifeless, lacklustre and laboured - the only good thing about it was the end” (to singer Heather Small), as well as his trademark “that was a dancefloor dis-ast-er daaarling” to various cowering celebrities. “Oh but it’s all done with a certain love for them as well,” he insists. “The thing is, you’ve got to be honest and sometimes people take offence at that – well the audience do,” he laughs. “But the dancers can learn from my comments.” Craig reveals over the past couple of series he has tried to temper his barbed behaviour: “I offer constructive criticism and point out what was wrong. But I do now try to end on a positive.” But after 19 series, is he still as enthused about the would-be ballroom dancers? “Oh yes, of course,” he enthuses. “From Monday to Friday I am doing whatever I am doing, playing Miss Hannigan or the Wicked Stepmother or whatever but then I go to my Saturday job. And what a Saturday job it is - it’s the best in the world,” he laughs. At the time of writing it is still unknown as to who will lift this year’s coveted Glitter Ball trophy but Craig reveals the stars he has his eye on, singling out Casualty star Nigel Harman, comedian Eddie Kadi and actress Amanda Abbington - whom he describes as ‘fabulous’. And once the winner is crowned, Craig will set off with fellow judges Anton du Beke and Shirley Ballas for Strictly Live! - a nationwide tour that takes in some of the country’s biggest venues, including London’s O2 Arena. “I am actually writing and preparing the show today, as I also direct it,” he explains. “So yes, keeping busy.” Following that, Craig will be back in costume for his role as the Wicked Witch of the West in a new production of The Wizard of Oz, which arrives in Woking next May. “Oh she is worst of them all,” he laughs. “Everyone has seen the film and so there is a lot to live up to. But I am looking forward to taking on the role. It will be a challenge and I cannot wait to go green!” Catch Craig Revel Horwood in Annie at the New Wimbledon Theatre (Nov 7-11) and the Hawth in Crawley (Nov 13-18). He will appear in Cinderella at the New Wimbledon Theatre (Dec 8-Jan 7) before starring as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, which runs from May 7-12, 2024 at the New Victoria Theatre.

SP OKEN FO R “The Seymours Prestige Homes team, have been absolutely fantastic and a real pleasure to work with. Having managed our previous sale 8 years ago, I did not hesitate in using them again, and second time round, totally trusted the process as they marketed, and sold my house within 2 months, with polish, professionalism and integrity. Seymours Prestige Homes are exceptional.” LISA BAKER

“We were extremely impressed by the pragmatic approach of the whole team at Seymours Prestige Homes. From the start the team ensured that everything we did in presenting the property to market contributed towards attracting a sale. Advice was given on some subtle changes to the dressing of the house which in turn led to some excellent photography that helped it to stand out from others on the market at the time. Regular communication throughout the sale process allowed us to establish a good dialogue with our buyer and helped to reduce the stress for all involved. In what was a difficult market, Seymours Prestige proved that they excel in selling homes.” SUE BAUER

“I have sold several properties via Seymours Prestige Homes and would recommend them as an agent who specialise in properties over £1M. Built from the top employees at the other Seymours branches, all sales team members are fully briefed on the properties on offer, so no “Saturday girls or boys!” Their marketing budget is extensive and covers videos, glossy brochures and extensive advertising. The network of branches in Surrey also increases proactive market exposure, rather than just bunging it on Rightmove and wait for the phone to ring!” JEFF LLOYD

Don’t take our word for it, these are just a few of our 5-star google reviews. Choose us and you’ll see first hand why we’ve successfully sold many of the area’s most prestigious and expensive properties. www.seymours-estates.co.uk/prestige

“Highly recommended. We sold our property through Seymours Prestige Homes at the end of last year. We spoke to a few ‘high end’ agents before choosing Seymours, and went with them mainly for the passion, and knowledge of the area. During the process we engaged with most of the office, and was impressed by all of them. Since then we’ve been dealing with a number of agents (still trying to find a new house). And very few are of Seymours- standard. Knowledge, passion and client focused.” MARTYN JAMES

WINTER WARMER Surrey is home to an eclectic mix of artisan makers, growers and producers who have consistently been decorated with an array of awards and accolades. We caught up with three of the county’s most celebrated fine food (and drink) purveyors to showcase the best of the season.

Batts Hill Gin “Who doesn’t love drinking gin and tonic no matter what the time of year?” asks Delano Pienaar founder of Surrey’s Batts Hill Gin. Who indeed... The company was born out of a lockdown project and in the years subsequently has powered through the busy local spirit market to become a firm favourite with gin aficionados far and wide. Its original dry gin was awarded a Star at the Great Taste Awards and last year the business scooped ‘Best Surrey Local Producer’ at the Muddy Stilettos Awards. Delano says the secret of Batts Hill’s success is its passion for outstanding ingredients. The maker tries to source locally wherever it can and has undertaken a series of partnerships with ‘high quality local growers and producers’ to help grow its brand. It’s signature blend, made using traditional distilling methods, offers a distinctive ‘sugar-beet base and macadamia nut finish deliver a smooth gin’. The team has also gone on to create a Cucumber and Clementine Gin and a small batch Coffee Liqueur which is perfect as postChristmas dinner tipple. “Although I love a gin and tonic all year round, for winter this year, we are really bringing a festive feel,” Delano explains. “We are preparing a spicy gin that will really get you in the mood for a Christmas party or cocktails. “I have also been experimenting with clementine vodka. For me, making handcrafted spirits is all about the invention - trying new flavours and mixes and enjoying ourselves.” To see for yourself, you can visit the team at a range of upcoming events at The Vineking in Reigate or head to: battshilldistillers.co.uk

Mandira’s Kitchen Mandira Sarkar, a former management consultant, moved to the UK not knowing how to cook. In fact, Mandira says it was a family joke that she missed the food more than she missed her parents. But after constantly complaining about the lack of home-cooked food in England, a friend challenged her to put her money where her mouth was and start a business. Ms Sarkar accepted that challenge and soon Mandira’s Kitchen was launched, operating out of a 400-year-old cowshed in the Surrey Hills overlooking the beautiful Silent Pool. Now a multi-award winning and much loved artisan food businesses, Mandira’s kitchen offers fabulous ready meals, bespoke catering for large and small events. There is also a café on site, offering, what Mandira calls, ‘the best Indian street food in town’. “Basically I am living my middle-aged fantasy with the gin distillery on one side and a vineyard on the other,” she laughs. This winter the Mandira’s Kitchen will be hosting a series of Spice and Splendour events - a fine dining experience showcasing regional seasonal Indian food. The dishes are ideal for providing some warming nourishment as Mandira explains: “Our menus, deeply rooted in age-old family recipes cooked in time-honoured style, whisk you to regions, seasons, and festivals. From bustling pavements to India’s majestic palaces. Every dish, imbued with the richness of Indian cuisine and festive flair, tells a story.” To find out more, head to: mandiraskitchen.com

Crumbs Brewing This innovative Reigate-based brewing company was founded by husband and wife team Morgan and Elaine Arnell in 2017. “We knew we wanted to produce a beer and produce one as sustainably as possible,” Morgan says. “After coming across a statistic which revealed that 40% of bread in the UK never gets eaten and is one of the biggest offenders in terms of food waste, which itself is a major contributor to climate change we decided to start with bread.” After striking up a partnership with artisan baker Chris Robinson of Chalk Hills Bakery, Morgan and Elaine decided to utilise the shop’s leftover loaves to create a range of craft beers using their various bread grains that includes Bloomin’ Amber Lager, Na’an Lager and Sour Dough Pale Ale. From there, Crumbs Brewing has gone from strength to strength. It was spotted by Waitrose and is now starting to partner with other bakeries across the country. Alongside this is a raft of honours - most recently scooping the Marie Claire UK Sustainability Award - recognising not only the beers’ outstanding flavours, but also microbrewery’s eco-friendly credentials too. “We have been quite shocked to win as we were up against the ‘grown-up brands’,” Morgan admits. “So it’s great for us.” So with a busy awards season behind them, the focus moves on to Christmas - another busy time in the team’s calendar. “For this time of year - our darker beers come into their own. The Ruby Ale, which is rich and spicy and the Rye Coffee Porter would be my suggestions,” says Morgan. While both are made using delicious rye bread, the Porter also makes use of spent coffee grounds from Union Hand-Roasted Coffee - doubly good for the fight against food waste - to create a strong brew with a chocolatey sweet side, that is great to savour on a chilly night. “They are both really nice winter beers,”, reveals Morgan. “Although at 7%, the Coffee Porter is not for the feint hearted.” To find out more, visit: crumbsbrewing.co.uk
