ED Talks: The Environmental History of Pittsburgh by Mr. Edward F. Schroth Join us on Wednesday, February 22 at 7PM for a presentation on the environment’s impact on the history of Pittsburgh by Edward F. Schroth. All cities possess environmental stories, but there is no city that surpasses Pittsburgh in terms of the scope of how its air, land and water history has influenced and shaped its society and economy. From an environmental perspective, we will discuss the manner in which the physical and economic growth of Pittsburgh impacted the natural environment. Pittsburgh and its site went through various stages of development after its colonial beginning, providing THE major commercial and transshipment center for travelers moving west into the Ohio Valley; furnishing important natural resources, especially related to energy; becoming one of the nation’s premier industrial centers. Mr. Schroth is best-known as a teacher of biology, water ecology and environmental science at Quaker Valley High School, and later at Duquesne University. This will be the first in a series of ED Talks this year.
Meet our New Head Children’s Librarian, Jen Farmerie In September 2016 Part-time Children’s Librarian Jen Farmerie took over the role of Head Librarian from Rita Crawford. Mrs. Farmerie began her career at the Sewickley Public Library in 2005 as a part-time Children’s Librarian. Recently she has been overseeing an outreach program at Ohio Township Nature Center and making plans for some great changes to the department. You can read more about her plans in a recent Sewickley Herald article. We welcome Mrs. Farmerie and invite you to stop in and introduce yourselves to her! Credit Kristina Serafini / Sewickley Herald
