County medical marijuana sales on the rise

By Lisa Dunlap Roswell Daily Record

The medical marijuana industry with Chaves County operations is now a multimillion-dollar enterprise and the number of active patients has more than doubled in a year, but the area remains a small part of the state business sector, according to third-quarter 2017 data from the state. The New Mexico Department of Health has regulated the industry since medical use of marijuana was legalized in 2007 and regularly provides information about licensed distributors, growers and manufacturers. The average number of Chaves County residents with medical cards for cannabis each month in 2017 now totals about 1,334, according to an October report from the state. The state average is 44,080. That makes Chaves County sixth among the state’s 33 counties. Bernalillo County has the most patients, 15,490. In June 2016, active medical card holders in

for the two operations for the third quarter of 2016, prior to the official opening of Pecos Valley Pharmaceuticals. For the entire year of 2016, sales for the dispensaries totaled $2.4 million. So far this year, sales have grown to $3.3 million. Statewide, sales at 67 dispensaries were $22.1 million for July through September 2017, with 110,072 patient transactions. That compared to $13.6 million in sales and 79,279 patient purchases for the same period in 2016. So far this year, sales statewide total $62.2 million, which is well above sales for the entire year in 2016 when they were $49.8 million. The state now authorizes the use of medical marijuana for 20 health conditions, with physicians able to seek authorization to prescribe it for other medical concerns. Berrendo Middle School shooting victim to meet ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ cast

By Trevier Gonzalez Roswell Daily Record

Having spent so much time in a hospital, one wouldn’t expect someone to have much of an interest in the medical field, but for Nathaniel Tavarez, it’s not only a passion, but a prominent theme within his favorite television series. Thanks to the MakeA-Wish Foundation, the Berrendo Middle School shooting victim will be getting the chance to meet the cast of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” in California next week. Tavarez, now a Goddard High School junior, told the Daily Record Friday evening at his sendoff party he was introduced to the TV show by his sister. Since then, he’s been hooked. “Ever since I first started

watching Grey’s Anatomy, I’ve always wanted to meet them,” Tavarez said. “Now that it’s coming to reality — that’s amazing.” Tavarez said he’s particularly drawn to Ellen Pompeo’s portrayal of Meredith Grey. “She makes the show,” he said. “If she were to disappear, that would be the end of it.” The former Berrendo Middle School student was joined by family members, friends, and teachers — past and present. “That’s who he wanted to be here, was his teachers,” said mother Donna Tavarez. “They’re very, very involved with him and they’ve helped him tremendously throughout this whole ordeal, and that’s who he wanted to invite.” Nathaniel Tavarez explained that his educa-

Nathaniel Tavarez reads a card made out to him while at his send off party before he and his family travel to Los Angeles, California to meet the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” as part of his wish with the MakeA-Wish Foundation. Tavarez, now a junior at Goddard High School, was one of the two victims of the Berrendo Middle School shooting in 2014. On Friday evening, Tavarez was joined with family members, friends and RISD teachers at Roswell’s Red Lobster to celebrate his wish being granted.

tors helped develop him. “The teachers that I invited today, those are my best friends,” Nathaniel Tavarez said. “They’ve helped me through everything. They’re the reason why I am where I am today.” Reading teacher Sherry Armbruster and security official Kevin Hayes, both of BMS, said the shooting had created a bond between them and Tavarez. “Kevin and I got to know Nathaniel very well after he was injured at Berrendo Middle School,” Armbruster said. “We became very close with Nathaniel and had built a really good relationship. “He is kind of a hero to us, and we just — respect him, so much, and his whole wonderful family.”

One of the most popular booths during this year’s HeART of Winter — Arts and Language Arts Extravaganza at Berrendo Middle School on Thursday evening was the cookie decorating booth. Anybody could pick up their favorite icing color and get to work creating their edible masterworks.

This is the third year that organizer and art teacher Jeanette Main held the art show, HeART of Winter — Arts and Language Arts Extravaganza at Berrendo Middle School. “Just setting everything up is a challenge and then getting everything organized,” Main said. “It is teaching me a lot about putting things together and putting little groups together to make a bigger program like this.” This year’s show included the language arts program, the exploratory program, music arts and visual arts.

“For the art part alone I have approximately 140 students,” Main said. “We have at least that many pieces and more, because I have some students that actually put more in. I estimated to have 175 pieces this year.” While parents, friends and family admired the work of the students that was displayed, the children paid the most attention to the center of the room where the Teacher’s Staff Challenge was held. Ten of BMS’ teachers competed against each other in a 30 minute paint contest under the watchful eye, and occasional guidance, of their young students. “They have 30 minutes

to create anything they want to,” Main said. “If it’s still life or anything else, it’s whatever they want to create on canvas. The audience, by applause, will determine who the winner is.” Ashley Stroud won the paint contest, despite the fact that language arts teacher Ray Gutierrez challenged the outcome. The playful banter that followed between the teachers made the children and adults laugh. Gutierrez is looking forward to a rematch next year.
