T

he Savills Sevenoaks Smash will be underway for its second season on the evening of Wednesday 4th May when Leeds & Kemsing Cobras host Fawkham Guzzlers. The 100-ball format game, which proved to be a huge success with clubs and supporters in 2021, now has 41 teams who will battle it out to be crowned champions in the Cup, Plate and Bowl finals respectively. The finals will be held at Sevenoaks Vine Cricket Club on Sunday 24th July throughout the day. Early fixture highlights in the Savills Sevenoaks Smash include: • Sevenoaks Vine Jazzers v Plaxtol • Orpington Buffs v Holmesdale Stallions • Sevenoaks School v Oaks Society Sixers • Tunbridge Wells Royals v Tonbridge Knights Sevenoaks Sport & Wellbeing magazine will be reporting on all the up-to-date results and league tables as the season progresses through our weekly statistics sponsored by Amherst Accountancy.

BOWLING CLUB COMPLETES FINALS Covid has played havoc with the internal competitions this season at Sevenoaks Indoor Bowls Club but, slowly and surely, they are all being completed. The Men's Singles final featured Stuart Ingram, a comparatively new, but very keen, bowler against Mick Adnett who won this event when it was last played in April 2019. Adnett began confidently opening up a 6-0 lead before Ingram got into his stride winning four consecutive ends to close the gap to 6-5. Both players were producing quality bowls, and with little to choose between them after 16 ends, Adnett held a narrow 13-12 lead. Adnett's greater experience then came to the fore as Ingram failed to score again although it did take Adnett a further 6 ends to reach the finishing line, 2112, and retain his title.

Ann Munro and Joan Moffat were the Ladies Singles finalists and another close game saw the ladies level at 9-9 after 11 ends. Confident bowling from the more experienced singles player, Munro, enabled her to open up a 13-9 lead. Moffat rallied well and came back with five shots on the next 2 ends to close the gap to 17-14 before her challenge ended, Munro winning 21-14. The final of the Oaks Cup, a singles competition for members over the age of 60, was fought out for the first time between two ladies, Brenda Bennett and Anne Welch. Bennett was quick off the mark, taking a 7-0 lead after 4 ends before Welch got on the scoreboard. She then won ten of the next 15 ends to close the gap to 18-14 before Bennett delivered the final blow winning 21-14.

HC KNOLE PARK GIRLS ARE U14 & U16 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

A

t the start of Arpil, HC Knole Park’s U14 and U16 girls stormed to win their England Hockey National Championship titles on a memorable day at Lee Valley National Hockey & Tennis Centre in the Olympic Village, Stratford. First on the bill in London were the U16 Girls playing against Beeston, Nottingham. Captain Lottie Bingham got the girls off to the perfect start from the penalty spot. Her penalty corner was saved, before Anna Faulstich’s rebound was then blocked on the line. Bingham coolly converted the penalty stroke to make it 1-0. Moments later Bingham scored again, this time rounding the Beeston defence to slot home. Bingham then completed her hat-trick inside an incredible opening 15 minutes with a brilliant backhand finish. In the second half, Beeston came out with a more positive game plan and scored just after the break to make it 31. However, the girls from Knole Park continued to create chances and it wasn’t long before Bingham added her fourth of the match from another set piece. Olivia Breed smashed home a ferocious backhand strike to make it 51, before Faulstich scored from another

08

penalty corner. Bingham completed the rout with a deft touch from a brilliant full pitch sweeping move involving Josefina Hippe and Summer Knight-Thompson, to make it 7-1 and ensure the title was coming back to Kent. This win crowns Knole Park’s U16 Girls as champions of England! HC Knole Park’s U14A Girls, inspired by the U16 Girls victory earlier in the day had their own final against Beeston as well. Having won this competition last season, there was huge motivation amongst the squad to do the same again.

In a hugely dominant performance, the girls were superb throughout. Biba Mills opened the scoring after a brilliant move down the right-hand side involving Betsy Burden and captain Evie Smith. Isla Johnson doubled the advantage from close range, latching onto a rebound to push home. Johnson repeated the trick ten minutes later as she volleyed in a penalty corner rebound from a Boadicea Cannon strike. In the second half Knole Park continued to create chances and Celia Foster pushed home a brilliant move involving Ines Gascoyne-Day and Mills. Moments later Mills scored her second of the afternoon with a superb drag-flick into the bottom corner. Evie Whitehead then scored with a fantastic flick after Cannon had waltzed through the Beeston defence but couldn’t quite beat the goalkeeper. A small lapse in concentration meant Beeston scored with their only attack of the match, however Mills had the final say as she completed her hat-trick with another superb penalty corner strike to make the final score 7-1. This crowns Knole Park’s U14 Girls as National Champions for the second season in a row!

SEVENOAKS’ U14 GIRLS ARE NATIONAL HOCKEY PLATE CHAMPIONS! t was an early start at the Olympic park London for Sevenoaks Hockey Club’s U14 girls in April. They were raring to go and fight for the title in Tier 1 National Plate competition. The first half of the game was dominated by the Sevenoaks forward and midfield players. The opening goal for Sevenoaks came in the 6th minute when a ball from L Hughes was transferred excellently in attacking play to K McKenna who subsequently found H Diprose, who slotted it calmly in the corner! 1-0. Sevenoaks went from strength to strength, the second came from super attacking play by L Nelson who dragged the keeper out of the goal before slipping the ball to C McKenna who crisply finished in the corner. The 3rd goal came from a fast break which ended with N Taylor at the top of the circle, hitting it in for 3-0. Sevenoaks incessant pressure resulted in numerous short corners. A clinical clean strike from L Hughes found the right hand corner making it 4-0. The 5th goal started with a quick transfer around the back, E Holthausen to M De Jonge who instinctively found C McKenna up the line who finished with aplomb. Sevenoaks’ 6th was started with a superb interception by M Wright with H Diprose converting the pass into goal.

SWIMMER FERN GRAY COMPETES IN SCOTTISH NATIONALS

I

Fern Gray, 15, of Sevenoaks Swimming Club competed in the Scottish National Age Group Championship in April. She swam in the 15-18 year old category and came 6th in the 1500m freestyle. Then in the 400m Individual Medley Fern qualified for the Finals and swam 5 seconds faster than in her heat, achieving a 7 second personal best and 4th place. Head Coach, Keiron Piper says, “Great work Fern. You smashed it!”

JAEDON LYNCH NAMED IN JAMAICA SQUAD

Alderly Edge came out all guns blazing in the second half creating several break aways however very little got past V Kern in the middle or the final line of defence. Z Starr wearing her Kent goal keeping shirt commanded the final defence line amazingly well and kept a clean sheet for the game and in fact has only let a handful of goals in all season. A spokesperson for the club said: “Gold medals were well deserved for this amazing group of girls who have fought for each other on and off the pitch since they started playing hockey together at the tender age of seven.”

Sevenoaks Swimming Club’s Jaedon Lynch has been selected for the Jamaican National Junior Squad for 15 - 18 years olds. This is for the cycle of meets running to August 2022. This is such a huge achievement and Head Coach Keiron Piper is keen to emphasise that this is due to Jaedon’s hard work. He says, “Hard work pays off! Huge congratulations to Jaedon.”

Barry had stints at many clubs where he always hit the ground running, these included Nugget FC, Coney Hall FC, Halstead FC, Warlingham FC, Biggin Hill FC, Addington Palace FC and many more. Barry’s ability to carry himself as well as his kind, caring and generous nature meant he was always welcomed wherever he ventured. He will be missed by many teams and players that he crossed paths with, but none more than Westerham FC. Rest in peace Gaffa.

arry had been associated with Westerham Football Club for many years, most recently as goalkeeper for both Saturday & Sunday men’s teams, along with managing the Saturdays also. His natural ability as a goalkeeper saw many successful seasons not just for Westerham but for many other teams, including Aperfield Athletic where he helped them win the league conceding only 11 goals in his first season.

NEXTGEN2 SHOW A SUCCESS FOR WEST KINGSDOWN BOXING CLUB

I

t’s been a busy few months for West Kingsdown boxing club as they recently hosted their third show of the season, NextGen2! It was held at their training base, West Kingsdown village hall with 17 evenly matched bouts including seven WKD boxers who show great promise for the future. Riley Philips had his first skills bout along with his club mate, Harry Costin. Coaches were happy with their performances and these boys will be boxing competitively in the not too distance future. Competitive boxing started with Henry Lingham who was involved in a real thriller against Sonny Martin (St Mary’s Chatham). These two left everything in there and at the end of a close bout, Henry won

time after three consecutive stoppage wins. He was stepped up in class against the more experienced Billy Gallagher (Strood BC) and forced a standing count in the second round but Gallagher fought back bravely in the third. However, it was Todd who got the decision making it four wins in a row for him. He will be boxing in the semi-final for the Southern Counties championship belt on Saturday 30th April in Maidstone. The week before the home show, School boy finalist, Denny Moore, was a unanimous points winner in a tough bout in Tilbury and most recently on Saturday 23rd April, Henry Lingham and Freddie Steadman won the Southern Counties schoolboy titles with tough wins over their opponents from Westhill and Aylesham. A great achievement for themselves and the club. They now go on to the National quarter finals in Southampton on May 7th looking to book their places in the semis and finals in Banbury a week later. The club have announced their final show of the season on Saturday 27th May at the Doubletree Hilton Dartford. This event is a ticket only dinner show with auction, raffle and DJ. The club are hoping to match 12 of their boxers before a well-earned rest for boxers and coaches alike!

a split decision to make it two wins in a week for him and left with Best Boxer of the Day Trophy. Next up for WKD was Freddie Steadman who was too good for his opponent from Hillcrest forcing a standing count on the way to a unanimous points win. Jack Grassby made it three wins in a row for the club with a third round stoppage over his opponent from Uppercutz BC. After the interval Harry Mason and Riverside BC’s, Bobby Taber, served up a bout of real quality. Harry, in his first bout for WKD, had a great last round but it was not enough for the judges, losing a tight decision. These two deservedly won bout of the day! Finally, Todd Anderson-Jennings was made to go the distance for the first

S

evenoaks Suns Basketball Club finished the regular season of the Women’s British Basketball League with a fantastic second place. Sevenoaks will start their playoff campaign with a home tie versus Essex Rebels on May 1st. Should everything go to plan, they wll meet London Lions in the final on Sunday 15th May at the O2 in London. CELEBRATING THE SEVENOAKS DISTRICT’S FINEST TEAMS

A

s the 2021/22 winter season finishes for many of our sports athletes in the district, we take a look at those who supassed all expectations and came away with their respective championships! Congratulations to everyone involved with Sevenoaks Rugby Club on such an amazing effort this season - winning the London & SE Premier Division to take them to the National 2 level of England Rugby. Sevenoaks Town’s women also clinched their title after a spectacular season and Chipstead held their own to get the job done and will soon be playing Kent County Premier football. Sevenoaks Hockey Club and HC Knole Park ladies deserve so much applause this season, with two teams a piece clinching titles in the South East Hockey League. And whilst not wanting to be outdone, the hockey club’s other teams also triumphed too, but they had to settle for promotion rather than the title’s. Well done to Sevenoaks’ men’s 4’s and 9’s, their ladies 7’s, and to HC Knole Park’s men on a blistering season. The new season is a few months away, but we’re getting excited already!

SEVENOAKS TRIATHLON IS BACK

A

fter an absence of two years due to covid and ground works through Knole Park, this sold-out race returned with a bright and early start at the Sencio Leisure Centre, starting with a 400m swim. The undulating 25km bike segment took in the steep descent of Riverhill and a climb up Shipbourne Hill (where competitors competed for the Queen or King of the Mountain award) followed by a challenging 5km run in Knole Park – to finish in front of a crowd of supporters enjoying the sun and atmosphere. Nicola Lilley (Medway Tri) and Peter Hogben (Deal Tri Club) were the overall winners in 1:15:25 and 1:07:40. Nicola was crowned Queen of the Mountain and the Male Mountain Goat was Julian Aliphat (2nd male overall). Nicola, who was 20th overall was closely followed by Saskia Ricks in 1:19 and Deborah Hope (Medway Tri) in 1:20:09. Second and third for the men were Julian Aliphant of Hampstead Tri Club only 20 seconds behind Peter, in 1:08:00 while Joe Bosson finished out

the podium 45 secs later – but was fastest in both the swim and run. There were some very fast times in all the age groups. Rob Parry 40-49, (Crystal Palace Tri Club) 1:09.59; Simon Crook 50-59, 5th overall (Epsom Tri Club) 1:10:10; Martin Leat 1st male 60-69 yrs and John Harley 1st over 70 in 1:31:31. Special mentions to another septuagenarian, Edward Oatley who completed for the 36th time – missing only one event in the history of the race. In the ladies age groups Ashleigh Pearson won in 1:21:16. Julie Blackley was the over 50’s lady winner less than five mins slower. Another notable female competitor was Steph Cook MBE, who was the Olympic modern pentathlete in 2000 – 2nd in the over 50’s and 20th female overall. The race is always popular and with a maximum of 500 participants, it usually sells out quickly. Although very much a local event, it attracts participants who have competed in local, national and international events.

SPECTACULAR FESTIVAL OF COLOUR AT SEVENOAKS HOCKEY CLUB

ver 120 boys and girls from the U9 to U12 age groups took part in an spectacular end of season festival at Sevenoaks Hockey Club. There were some superb examples of teamwork evident when children were grouped in teams, some having never played together before. Mike Clyne, the new Chair of the junior section, came down to check out the action, and the beloved mascot Oaksy made a guest appearance playing on pitch, and even had a stint in goal! A great turnout with many of the older junior players coaching and umpiring to a terrific standard. It really was a super team effort from all involved. The season has been fantastic, with the progression of each and every junior player. MEMORIES OF THE SEVENOAKS CHARITY CUP E

aster time traditionally heralds the Final of the Sevenoaks Charity Cup Competition and this year was no exception, at the Culverden Stadium. On Good Friday, enthusiastic crowds enjoying the warm sunshine watched West Kingsdown play Hawkenbury with the home side scoring via AlfieJay Turner soon after the half-time break, which was ultimately enough to win the Charity Cup. West Kingsdown manager, Billy Reynolds (pictured second from left) told Sevenoaks Sport & Wellbeing after the cup win: “We are a new side that was formed in 2020 to bring an adults side to the village. This was our first cup final of two this season and it was a tough game which was very enjoyable. I would just like to add that we appreciate all the support that followed us on Good Friday to the final - it didnt go unnoticed.” In the Junior tie prior to that game, Ide Hill 3rd beat Cuxton 1991 Reserves 2-1. We caught up with Derek Hodge, Life President of the Sevenoaks & District Football League, to talk about his memories of the Charity Cups: “As a young lad I have happy memories of walking from my home in St Botolphs Avenue along with my father to watch the Senior Sevenoaks Charity Cup final at Knole Paddock. The year was 1948 when I set off with a pair of my

28

father’s old leather football boots around my neck, suspended by laces. In addition an old St. Johns United FC shirt draped over my body. My father played for St. Johns after he was demobbed from the Army at the end of World War II. The finalists were Crockham Hill and Borough Green, the latter who were in the early stages of being a force in Kent Football circles. An estimated crowd of 3,500 turned out for the final with Borough Green winning 2-0. I had great difficulty in watching the match because of the depth of the crowd standing on the touch line and my juvenile size at the age of 10. The magnitude of the crowd has always been considered the largest for a charity football match. The gate receipts were reported to be £154. For those readers who do not know the history of the Sevenoaks Charity Cups, the famous Senior Cup was founded in 1894. The first victorious team was Shoreham United whose opponents were Holmesdale Reserves. The magnificent silver trophy was procured from Messrs Spinks, well known London Silversmsiths at a cost of 75 Guineas. The name of Shoreham United was engraved on a small silver acorn plaque which was then affixed to an ebony base. The tradition has lasted over the years to the present day. A Junior Sevenoaks Charity Cup

basically for Reserve teams was founded in 1923 with St Johns United Reserves defeating Sevenoaks Reserves 2-0 in the inaugural match. The objective of the Competition was two-fold. Firstly, to improve the game of football in the Sevenoaks District and secondly to aid the funds of local charitable Institutions. This policy has continued over the years and again to the present time. Interestingly in 1937, a ceremony took place at The Cottage Hospital now known as Sevenoaks Hospital, to commemorate £1,700 having been raised for charities of which £1,000 had been given to the hospital. A plaque carrying the words ‘Sevenoaks Charity Cup Competition Footballers Bed - Dedicated January

10th 1937’ was unveiled over a bed which was subsequently used by players injured in football matches. Donations have continued over the years from gate receipts raised at the Final ties. Many organisations have benefitted including Sevenoaks Almshouses, Kent Air Ambulance, League of Friends of Sevenoaks Hospital, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), Kent FA Benevolent, Age UK Sevenoaks and Tonbridge, HF Trust, Hospice in the Weald, Cancer Research and Bradbourne Riding for the Disabled. The morale here is that the Sevenoaks Charity Cup Competition should not be disregarded, for it has done so much for local football and most of all its charity work for 128 years.”

SEVENOAKS TOWN FC LADIES ARE CHAMPIONS

S

evenoaks Town FC Ladies have enjoyed a very successful 21/22 season, as they were crowned champions of Kent Division 1 West in the South East Counties Womens Football League (SECWFL) with one game to spare. They accumulated 43 points over the course of the season – which consisted of 16 games – including 14 wins and just one draw and one loss. The team would start their season as they intended to go on, kicking off their impressive title-winning campaign with an emphatic 8-2 win versus Maidstone United‘s Development Team, which included hatricks for Libby Gregory and captain, Nat Graves. The team followed up this resounding win with hard-fought victories versus the other teams in their league. During the matches this season they accumulated a remarkable goal difference of 40 (61 goals scored, 21 conceded) and the game in which they were crowned champions, was

an outstanding 10-0 home win, including five goals from the team’s top scorer Ami Wybrow. Sevenoaks’ impressive campaign was led by the coaching team, comprising of manager Paul McDonagh, who joined the club’s women and girls’ setup prior to the start of the season, Dan Thomas and Matt Orchin. The team’s success this year puts them well on their way to achieving the three-year plan that the committee of Sevenoaks Town put together before the season began, which entails the aim of helping the team move from tier 7 (b) to tier 4 within the next three years. With the appointment McDonagh and the work the club is doing with Natalie Curtis, a Football Development Officer for Women & Girls Football at the Kent FA, and Charlotte Richardson, an FA Club Consultant who has been involved in the Women’s Sport & Leadership Academy, Sevenoaks Town are increasing the profile of women’s football at the club.

Sevenoaks Town FC Ladies won the South East Counties Kent Division 1 West with a winning record of P16 W14 D1 L1.

SEVENOAKS SPORT & WELLBEING

Commenting on his first season with the ladies side, McDonagh told Sevenoaks Sport & Wellbeing: “I had worked with Sevenoaks Town FC prior to Covid within the boys section before taking on this role, and Paul [Lansdale] asked me to help promote and assist the women’s side of the game. “We started by making sure we had the right environment and getting the players onboard. We promoted a few players from the under-18’s and they stepped up pretty quickly. The first month was fairly rocky but it picked up really quickly after that. Asked about the club committee’s vision, he added: “Whenever a club says it wants to be in that position, that’s the minimum or best case scenario, but I think the most important thing that was suggested is that we get out of the division this year - which is what we’ve achieved. “Then it’s a case of yes, we go up at least one division, but we have applied to go up two divisions, which is now out of our hands. The club want to be up there, ideally we want

Whenever a club says it wants to be in that position, that’s the minimum or best case scenario, but I think the most important thing that was suggested is that we get out of the division this year. to be playing in the Regional Divisions which is step 5.” The club are also working on the junior side of the women’s game and conversations have been had about getting the football up to standard. McDonagh added: “Now we have step one under our belt, we can spend a bit of time looking at the girls section. We want to make sure that every age group from U8’s all the way up to U18’s is filled, whilst raising the standard of coaching and eventually getting it on a par with the boys section.” The squad will be presented with the League Winners Trophy on Thursday 26th May at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium prior to the SECWFL Chairman’s cup final. Sevenoaks Town Ladies showed they meant business this season and had a variety of ways to win, even without being at their best. They will hopefully move up two divisions thanks to their triumphant campaign and they will begin the 2022/23 season in September. We for one hope it will be another successful season for them!

ISTHMIAN LEAGUE FOOTBALL TO RETURN FOR LOCAL CLUBS

B

oth Sevenoaks Town and Corinthian football clubs will make a welcome return to the Isthmian Football League next season after both were confirmed safe in the South East Division in April. Sevenoaks Town had a job to get done in February when they brought in new manager Harry ‘Houdini’ Hudson after the club had only managed to gain 23 points from their 28 matches played. Nine weeks later and not only did they survive the drop, but finished Isthmian League South East Division: Sevenoaks Town FC’s journey before and after Harry Hudson took over Up to February 25th Pos. top of the form guide with eight wins, a draw and a loss under Hudson’s stewardship. They even beat newly crowned league champions Hastings United 2-1 on the final day of the season by the coast. Corinthian’s season, their first in the Isthmian League, was one about finding their feet and getting used to their new surroundings. It was a bumpy road for the team from Fawkham but it didn’t stop them from finishing in an impressive 8th place recording 14 clean sheets during the season. They secured some fantastic results, both at home and on the road. In fact, the battle between the two sides saw Corinthian come out on top over three matches (one being the 2nd round tie of the Velocity Trophy). They beat Sevenoaks away 1-0 in October, triumphed again in the cup at home

2-1; and then drew 1-1 when the teams met for the final time in February. What will the 2022/23 season look like? With Sheppey United and Chatham Town rising from the Southern Counties East Football League and East Thurrock United likely to join the division from the Isthmian Premier, it is already looking like it’s going to be a tough season for all teams. But what we hope is that both of our Sevenoaks District sides will take the summer to reflect on the season past and build accordingly to mount a serious challenge for the championship next season! #COYO #UptheHoops

SEVENOAKS SPORT & WELLBEING

H

ave you ever wondered why as parents we are constantly battling with our children over time on devices or specifically on computer games? Are you ready to help me as parents and coaches to take on the challenge of toppling the computer game? There is no doubt that many of us dislike the number of hours played on devices by our children each week and many of us do our best to impose time restrictions and manage the situation to the best of our ability and we must continue to do so. It is obvious that we need to limit this time, encourage them to be creative with other games away from a screen, go outside and play as well as ensure that they are getting enough physical activity during a regular week. Two recent surveys show that children under the age of eight spend over two hours a day in front of a screen whilst those between eight and 16 can average as much as 6.5 hours a day across multiple digital platforms. So, what is it that makes the computer game so appealing to children rather than the alternative of going out to play? One of the major reasons I am afraid and this is a warning to both parents and coaches is that the computer game meets the needs of the child and they are the focus of the whole experience unlike in many sporting environments where the needs of the adult can often be seen to be met first. Many of the games designers are often asking for feedback from children meaning the next version of the game goes even further in meeting the demands of the child, making the experience even better than before with the child craving more and more of the perceived good stuff. They allow the child to participate the whole time, play with friends and be part of the whole experience. There is certainly no waiting in a line for a go or spending time on the bench waiting to get on the field.

They allow the child to be in control of a situation, make their own decisions, take educated risks without ramifications and dust themselves down and start again without criticism from a third party. By the time we have thrown in that children get to live in their own reality, learn by doing without fear, problem solve on their own terms and at their own speed you can see why the computer game is so appealing to them. Do the sports environments that your children are involved in reflect this? Are you having to drag your children off the field because the session has been both exhilarating and addictive? This is definitely possible and many coaches will be creating such an environment… if they are not then hopefully you will find an alternative session for your child or that coaches will start to evolve and make changes to the environment they create.

to keep practising and playing. If we can make it all about the children’s experience then success is just around the corner, the technological industry can vouch for that! We have talked about the ‘Ultimate Success’ at WWPIS of children participating in sport and physical activity for life and coaches and parents creating an environment that is fun and child centred as opposed to meeting the demands of the adult. If all parties can work together on this then sport can start to wrestle back some control from the computer game.

Parents: What can you do to make sport and physical activity more appealing than the computer game? • Focus on the learning of your child as opposed to the winning • Support your child, try not to be a ‘second’ coach • Make sure they are having ‘FUN’ • Ensure the activity is set up to meet the needs and demands of your child • Allow your child to participate in multiple sports and in multiple environments • See mistakes as an opportunity to learn • Allow them to fail and experiment, this will help them become more creative and problem solve Coaches : Do you put as much hard work and thought into your sessions as the video game makers do to make the experience one worth participating in for the children? Sporting sessions can be just as exhilarating and addictive as the video game and perhaps the real success is if we are having to drag our players off the field because they want

WEIGHT TRAINING FOR TEENAGERS IN 2022

Providing appropriate and effective exercise direction regardless of age, weight, goal or medical condition.

36

SEVENOAKS SPORT & WELLBEING

W

hat needs to be considered for teenagers turning to weight training to get stronger in a post covid, post lockdown society? Covid caused a break in teenagers normal structured development, they have spent time away from their scheduled school, pe, teams, gym and other physical activities with their friends. This was at a time when many teens would have laid the

foundations for their social, physical and neural systems involved in physical activity. At the same time as the restricted physical activity, teenagers have experienced increased exposure to the unfiltered worldwide social media of exercise advice and physically enhanced influencers. Offering a range of good, bad and just dangerous directions to teens who often have no one to validate the information for them.

With all this in mind, where should we go from here when we have a teenager keen to learn the basics and develop themselves with strength training? The Base: When it comes to strength training teenagers can’t just be treated as small adults. They will need to build a correct movement base relative to their physical stage of development and progress appropriate to their age.

Neuromuscular Education: Taking the time to build a teen’s neural map is vital, this is the part where they are taught to put their bodies in the correct lifting position and reinforce it enough to maintain this position under load. The Importance of Progression: Just because there is a need to have a more considered approach when strength training teenagers; it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t see regular improvements and experience the benefits of these. Once teenagers are proficient in their base movements there is no reason why they shouldn’t participate in age-specific programs that challenge and develop their abilities. Team Spirit: In our experience, we have found that when starting a strength training program, not every teenager will start at the same point or develop at the same rate. We have never had to exclude a child from our program, it just means that some will need a little bit more direction and attention, and indeed are supported by the other teens creating a real supportive community. Teenage strength training is about more than just developing physical strength. As I have already touched on in this article, we have found that a good strength training program hugely improves confidence regardless of their starting point, a willingness to help others especially when training as a team or school and when done well, creates a healthy life long relationship with exercise and all its benefits. Finally, I would say, take the time to get the right program for your teenager that allows them to develop safely at their own pace. • If you have any questions at all about teenage strength training please don’t hesitate to contact Brogan Lintott the Head of our Young Athlete Department at brogan.lintott@betterbodygroup. co.uk.

THE DOS AND DON’TS TO RELIEVE PERIOD SYMPTOMS

T

he time of the month effects not only our moods but also negatively impacts our physical fitness and exercise routine too. Tiredness and fatigue are the symptoms of menstruation that women are most likely to suffer from. A fluctuation of hormones and nutrient deficiencies can play a significant role in how we feel and perform during our period. Research suggests that one in five women suffers from heavy bleeding during their period. This may lead to iron deficiency or anaemia. As a result, the body will have a harder time making haemoglobin that's needed to carry oxygen throughout

the body. Low energy, weakness, low blood pressure, fatigue and a lack of concentration are the most common symptoms associated with low levels of Iron. When haemoglobin levels are low due to iron deficiency, oxygen levels may also be low. This means that muscles and the brain don’t receive enough oxygen to engage in normal activities such as exercising. When your brain detects even the slightest drop in oxygen levels, it triggers changes which may lead to fainting. Eating iron-rich foods such as red meat, red kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, peas, dark green leafy vegetables such as kale or spinach or taking iron supplements may in-

crease the amount of oxygen your blood carries around (which may prevent from fainting). So if you are feeling fatigued and light headed then reduce high intensity, strenuous exercise and save it for the last days of your period when your energy levels return. A drop in oestrogen before and in the first few days of the period is responsible for mood swings and a lack of physical motivation. Low volume strength training and light cardio is recommended for the best exercise during your period. Research suggests that low-intensity exercise, such as swimming, has been shown to help alleviate menstrual cramps. It encourages the body to release endorphins which work like natural painkillers. Exercising also improves blood circulation in the pelvic area which can ease period pains. Light movement promotes the release of dopamine and serotonin which increases positive feelings and boosts mood. Supplementing with Calcium, Iron, Mg and vitB6 can also help to boost serotonin levels which has a positive effect on regulating mood disorder1.

Your lung capacity decreases during the early and late-follicular phases of the menstrual cycle, presumably due to capillary blood volume changes. Women may struggle with heavy breathing or feeling breathless more often during strenuous exercise2. Light movement such as yoga and deep breathing exercises (such as belly breathing or pursed lip breathing) can help to increase blood oxygen levels and improve lung capacity3. Supplementing iron or cooking in a cast iron skillet can also help to replenish iron lost during menstruation and increase the transportation of oxygen from the lungs to all the parts of the body4. Our cravings for sugar increase during the period. This is due to the ever changing levels of oestrogen and progesterone which also has an impact on serotonin in the brain (which may affect mood and trigger PMS). Studies revealed that women suffering with PMS may intake around 200-500 more calories per day with additional calories typically coming from carbs and fats. So rather than relying on sugar to boost serotonin levels try to snack on high in Mg nuts instead!5

The Bricklayers Arms is a traditional village pub situated opposite the beautiful sailing lake in the picturesque village of Chipstead. We serve Harvey's beer straight from the barrel, along with freshly prepared, good quality British pub food.

Andy Hogg, landlord for 14+ years will be serving his last pint at The Bricks on Sunday 15th May, then handing back the keys to pursue new adventures! We would like to thank everyone for the amazing support throughout that time! Harvey’s Brewery will take over the running of the pub, with Darren Rose at the helm.

Please keep up to date via our social media channels for upcoming events, menus and more.
