Welcome to the Billy McDonald Rodeo Co. herd dispersal sale. We would like to take a moment to thank you all for coming (in person and online). A huge thank you to Kyle Miller and the VJV crew for all the help in preparation for the sale. We are proud to be able to offer a diverse herd with bloodlines that date back 50+ years. Billy prided himself on raising strong horses with big bones that are built to last and buck! Billy spent most of his life building onto the legacy his father passed down to him and his brothers. We hope that these genetics help to continue on the legacy of the McDonald family across North America.
In the 1960’s the McDonald Brothers; Robert, Bernard, James and Alex began a rodeo company in Northern Alberta. They were known as the McDonald Brothers Rodeo. The family raised horses and cattle south of Hylo, AB on the Kikino Metis Settlement. In the 1960s they began to host rodeos in the Hylo area on the ranch next to the river. In 1962 the family would trail horses across the country to Plamondon for their rodeo. People came from near and far to compete and watch these rodeos. Many young cowboys and cowgirls began their rodeo careers with the help of the McDonald Family.
Today the legacy lives on in the McDonald Brothers children, grandchildern and great grandchildern. Many continue to ranch and rodeo. The family has spread out across Alberta and Saskatchewan now, although a lot of the family still resides in the south Hylo area. The family continues to raise top quality rodeo stock which compete at some of the highest levels of rodeo in North America.
When Robert retired he passed along his knowledge and bucking horse genetics onto his sons; Billy, David and Calvin. The boys continued with his legacy raising bucking horses and rodeoing.
Billy was also well known for the Billy McDonald Rodeo Co. Summer series (many contestants fondly calling them Billy Rodeos). 12+ years ago Billy wanted to get more horses bucked and decided to start hosting local open rodeos in the Lac La Biche Area. Soon after he picked up a few more rodeos Thorhild, Newbrook, Fort McMurray and Maskwacis. Following in his fathers and uncle’s footsteps Billy wanted to promote the sport of rodeo and help more young people get started in the sport. More events were added to support the young riders and ropers. It became a lot more than just getting a few more horses bucked. It turned into creating rodeos the whole family could be involved in. Creating a welcoming environment where anyone could feel comfortable starting their rodeo careers in. A lot of the family had come to help with the rodeos in various ways in the last 12+ years. The summer series would not have been the success it was without the help of the family, volunteers, rodeo personnel, contestants, spectators and rodeo committees.
A message from the girls:
We are thankful dad convinced us just over a decade ago that it would be fun to rodeo all summer. We can’t help but look back on the years spent rodeoing as a family fondly. We are extremely thankful for all the friendships we have built in the last 12+ years. This last year has been extremely hard without the head of our little family. Closing this chapter in our lives has been difficult, we thank you all for your support during this time. We look forward to watching the genetics dad spent most of his life building continue on in other herds. We hope to get to watch these horses compete North America wide. We are extremely proud of the horses we got to raise as a family and we hope that they treat you as well as they have treated us! We look forward to seeing you all at the sale in Westlock on March 22, 2025.
Take care and God Bless.
