Our mission is to promote healing and growth in children, young adults and families by providing a continuum of care, support and resources.

We serve individuals who have experienced severe emotional trauma, abuse and neglect.

Summer is in full swing!! Our children are out of school and enjoying many summer activities, including Games Day on June 19th which was a great success. It was such a great experience to see our children, staff and Club members having so much fun! Thank you to all who participated.

The warehouse is a busy place with donations, members and many community volunteers including the Young Men’s Service League and the National Charity League. The volunteers receive a briefing on our mission when they arrive on Monday mornings thanks to Gina Smith and Melisa Markman, our Warehouse Volunteer Coordinators. Let’s all remember to be courteous to each other and thank our volunteers.

Volunteers are an integral part of what we accomplish at the warehouse and The Sale.

Updates from The Home SUMMER TIME We are in the homestretch of the summer with school starting back on August 14 for our UT Charter School students and August 20 for AISD. Every year we plan a robust summer program to keep residents busy and involved in a variety of activities.

They participate in fun workshops, swim in local pools, picnic at Zilker Park and attend all different kinds of summer camps. These activities broaden their interests and help boost their confidence, allowing them to build healthy relationships in the community beyond The Home. I want to thank every Club member who has supported our residents this summer.

THE HOME PAGE You should have recently received The Home Page in the mail. This is our biannual community newsletter that highlights individuals who have a connection to The Home such as former residents, foster parents and volunteers. In the latest edition of The Home Page there is an article written by Julie Smith who was licensed as a foster parent through our Foster & Adoption Program. Julie does a wonderful job articulating her journey as a foster parent and the impact it has had on her life. I encourage you to go to our blog and read it at settlementhome.org/fostering-mywhy.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Each month, our staff members nominate candidates to be recognized as Employee of the Month. Our Executive Team reviews the nominations, and the winner is announced at the first all-staff meeting of the month. I am excited to share with you that our July Employee of the Month is Selena Coburn, Recreation Coordinator. Many of you have interacted with Selena because she coordinates activities for our residents. Here are some of the kind things her co-workers had to say about her: “Selena does so much. Between scheduling and running the entire summer program, leading clubs, working one-on-one with our residents to address their recreation and health needs and all the other many, many tasks associated with her job, she really does it all! Even more she completes her work with a positive attitude and a big smile. For these reasons and so many more, I believe Selena should be Employee of the Month!”

I also want to thank every Club member who gives valuale time and resources to ensure the success of this event. I appreciate your hard work and commitment!

A Tribute - Royce W. Faulkner We wish to recognize Royce W. Faulkner, a great friend and supporter of The Home who passed away on June 25, 2019. In 2010, Faulkner Construction Company broke ground for an extensive expansion project, and a year later the Williamson Family Campus Training & Conference Center and the Transitional Living Program efficiency apartments were completed. Among the many uses of the Training & Conference Center, the additional space allowed our Foster & Adoption Program to hold training sessions for foster families, enabling this program to continue growing. These programs have helped hundreds of children, families and young women, and Mr. Faulkner’s impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

Another passion of Mr. Faulkner’s was Hope for Tomorrow, which is a scholarship program that supports alumni of The Settlement Home for Children who are pursuing a college or vocational degree. Recipients receive financial assistance to purchase groceries, school books and supplies. Mr. Faulkner’s hope was for these young women to focus on school and worry less about how to make ends meet.

As his obituary acknowledges, “Royce actively sought to improve the Austin community through his service and participation in many organizations.” We are so thankful to Mr. Faulkner for his longstanding commitment to supporting the programs at The Home. The difference he made in the lives of youth in foster care is immeasurable. We are honored to have been connected with him as he made such an impact, not only on The Home, but throughout the entire Austin community.

44th Annual Garage & Estate Sale The warehouse is full of members, volunteers and donations! We are well on our way to another successful Garage & Estate Sale!

The temperature in the warehouse may be rising, but cool heads prevail as we focus on ways to improve the experience for our Sponsors and Shoppers at the Preview Party. We are fast approaching the August 15th deadline for your sponsorship to be recognized on promotional and print materials.

Please consider being a Sponsor. Only 25% of our members sponsor at any level. Member sponsorship begins at the $400 level.

Don’t forget to order your T-Shirts. Order forms are in your departments and due on August 15th, no payment required until you pick them up.

Cashiering at The Sale There will be lots of changes in the cashiering at the 2019 Garage & Estate Sale. There will be payment stations in both the north and south lobbies. There will be “Paid Package Checks” in both. WE NEED HELP! If you or someone you know is willing to take a cashiering shift, either as the cashier or as an expediter, please let Suzanne Clayton know. We are looking for energetic, upbeat people (including smart teens 17 or older) to staff the machines. Anyone have retail experience? There will be training and plenty of support. Club Yearbooks In the coming weeks, the annual Club Yearbook will be coming to you by mail! In addition to the Club member directory, the Yearbook has a lot of additional pieces of information to help communicate what’s happening with The Club and at The Home! As usual, you will see a calendar of events, lists and dates of meetings, a glossary of common terms used around The Home and lists of committees and Garage & Estate Sale departments, plus much more! New this year, you will also find a list of regular volunteers outside of Club members who help out on Mondays at the Warehouse and contact information for those volunteers.

Planned Giving As we continue our strategic plan for the future of The Home, please consider planned giving. This particular type of gift is not transactional but rather a long-term investment to ensure the financial sustainability of our organization.

The Mildred Gregg Wendlandt Legacy Society (MGW Legacy Society) was created in the spirit of a woman who believed in continuing to give to The Home beyond her lifetime. The MGW Legacy Society was established in 2004, and to date 73 people have joined, including many Settlement Club members. These members have committed to leaving a gift for The Home in their will or estate plan. Their gifts speak to the commitment and deep connection donors have to The Home’s mission to help children heal from severe emotional trauma, abuse and neglect.

M G Legacy Society E-Commerce Update We are very excited to report that we have broken $20K! NEW TOTAL: $20,519.33.

It has been a busy month. Must be Christmas in July, as we sold a 2008 Texas Capitol Ornament for $150! The Letter People Puppets continue to sell - that total so far is $1,629.82 ,and we are awaiting payment for another set at $150.

We’ve also contracted with The RealReal. They are able to authenticate designer items that come in so we don’t have to worry about possibly selling fake merchandise. They have sold eight items so far and our commission total is $1,518.65.
