Redbike Feasibility Analysis (2019 year 4)

Scrapyard Urbanism

Prompt:

The Shipping industry supports a large portion of the global economy, supplying goods across the world from coal and steel, to toys and furniture. However ships dont last forever, most age out at 30 years old. Today when a ship is retired it ends up in three places, Chittagong Bangladesh, Gadani Pakistan, and Alang India. Our project focuses on Alang. In the poorer state of Gujarat, and far from any major city, Alang is entirely built on the existing shipbreaking industry which has rooted there due to prime conditions for beaching a ship. Our project looks to create a city condition out of this industry.

(Fall 2019, Year 4)

Site

Situated on a long flat beach with high tides that allow the ships to ram into the sand, beaching them to be deconstructed

Master Plan

An overarching idea of what the city is to be. Each member of the studio focused on a different aspect. I focused on the industrial railyard in the northeast of the city

Alang Industrial Railyard

With the new industries created in the masterplan a rail yard was needed to conect the regions freight lines to the major cities of india which would use the reprocessed material. There were three major materials that were coming out of the industries at alang. Glass, Steel, and Oil. Each had a different reprocessing method and therefor a different expression in its dedicated railyard

Oil

Steel Glass

Oil

The oil is reprocessed through a series of filters and then pumed underground to storage tanks near the railyard. When the tanker comes, the workers climb on top of each tanker, grab the nozzle out of the umbrella shaped canopy’s and fill the tankers. The nozzels are spaced at the length of each tanker to allow for the quickest, most effiecit fill

Oil Section 1:200

Glass

The glass was more complex as it came in a gravel form. Because of this it was able to be dumped and piled up. The idea of the gravel yard was for trucks to bring in the glass from the factories. It is then loaded by conveyer into the train and dumped from above. The glass is represented by fractal sheets that canopy.

Glass Section 1:300 Glass Section 1:300

Steel

Steel by far would be the largest export in Alang and therefore needs the most track. It also will be delivered by shipping container from the factories. This could be stored in a distribution center till it needed to be loaded. The distribution center would feaure a canopy of random ship hull parts bolted or ealded together, held up by rerolled steel beams. hanging onto the canopy would be a system of cranes that would pick up the cargo, transition outside the distribution center where it would go from rails suspended from the ceiling to rails in the platform the crane would take till it loaded it onto the appropriate car.

Fort Tryon Park School

Prompt:

The site we chose is located in Washington Heights, in northern Manhattan and on the edge of the neighborhood and Fort Tryon Park where The Met Cloisters is located. The site had a steep decline from street level and was the site of a double terrace park. We were tasked with designing an elementary school and the project became integrated between classes. One

Washington Heights

To the north of the site is the rest of Fort Tryon Park, to the south is Washington Heights. To the east o the site is an existing park with a playground and sports courts. To the west the site drops off dramatically to the rest of Washington Heights.

Forge Architecture:

According to UC’s coop program, we complete 3 coops of approximetly 4 months expereince each. At FORGE Architecture in San Francisco CA, I worked on a team for a variety of projects. The two I will highlight now I did a majority of the work for during my time at the firm. The first project was a reconfiguration of an existing retail space near a major shopping mall in Downtown San Francisco. The second project was to look at a guardrail that needed installed on the accessible roof of a 15 story building. This was my first internsip/Co-op and helped me to understand how a firm works and the entire architecture and planning industries.

This was a rooftop of a 15 story building in San Francisco with an accessible rooftop. This rooftop needed a guardrail so I speced out what needed done and two options for it being attached to the floor and the wall.

Stengel Hill Architecture:

According to UC’s coop program we have completed 3 coops of approximetly 4 months expereince each. At Stengel Hill Architecture in Louisville, I worked for a variety of projects mostly in the healthcare realm. The two I will highlight now, one hotel being converted into offices for a healthcare provider in Lexington KY, I did a signifigant amount of work for. The other is an Immediete Care that is being put in an unused portion of a hospital. A majority of the time I worked at the production level, so I gained experience in Revit, AutoCAD and some Adobe Products.

(Fall 2018, Year 3)

University Inn

This project was a former hotel being turned into offices for the University of Kentucky Medical Center. I helped redraw and edit the plans, lay out the internal structure in revit and specify the internal furniture and finishes of the plan

Immediate Care

This project was the fillout of an empty wing of a existing medical facility. I designed the original concept and helped assemble the finish board when the project neared the permitting phase

ChangeUP:

According to UC’s coop program we have completed 3 coops of approximetly 4 months expereince each. At ChangeUP in Cincinnati and then Miamisburg, I did mostly project management level work. As the company had just been bought out I also expereinced a move and all the technicalities that come with moving a firm. I do not have work to highlight, it was all confidential at the time but I worked a lot with the interiors team on coordination with our production team and making sure the both sides understood their tasks and completed what needed to be taken care of. I also assisted in the coordination of the final deliverables. At this firm I also learned the basics of SketchUp and our major clients were Starbucks, Chase Bank, and T-Mobile.

(Summer 2019, Year 3)

VENFIELD

Venfield NYC

In the summer of 2021 I had the opportunity to work for an interior designer and furnitrue designer in the city. The company is small so I have an opportunity to do a variety of tasks that included designing custom furniture and lighting, coordinating with the clients and fabricators to get pricing and approval. I also make trip to vendors to get material samples, answer the phones, coordinate finanacial transactions with international and domestic vendors, and handle andministration of the firm.
