SETC Honors Oskar Eustis of the Public Theater 2017 Distinguished Career Award Recipient & Saturday Keynote, March 4, 2017, 4:00pm Oskar Eustis — Theatre Icon. The Artistic Director of the Public Theater joins us Saturday, March 4, at the 68th annual SETC Convention for a keynote presentation and the annual Awards Banquet where he will be presented with SETC’s 2017 Distinguished Career Award for his continuing legacy of nurturing creative excellence, diverse perspectives and honest storytelling through theatre. In his keynote, “The State of American Theater,” Eustis will discuss the changes and opportunities facing non-profit theatres in this
tumultuous age. He’ll share his perspectives on where we, as a field, are succeeding as well as where we’re falling short. Throughout his career as a director, dramaturg and producer, Eustis has been dedicated to the development of new plays. Under his leadership, the Public Theater has been the birthplace of such wildly successful productions as Hamilton and Fun Home. Before coming to the Public Theater in 2005, Eustis served as Artistic Director at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI,

for 11 years. There, he directed the world premiere of Paula Vogel’s The Long Christmas Ride Home and Tony Kushner’s Homebody/Kabul, both recipients of the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Production. From 1981 to 1989, Eustis was with the Eureka Theatre Company in San Francisco, where he commissioned Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, and directed its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum. Alice Ripley
J. Allen Suddeth
Thursday Keynote March 2, 2017, 2:30pm
Friday Keynote March 3, 2017, 2:30pm
In Alice Ripley’s 2009 Tony award acceptance speech for her iconic performance as Diana in Next to Normal, she shared a quote from John F. Kennedy — one inscribed on a wall of The Kennedy Center: “I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit.” “He’s talking about art,” said Ripley. “Musical theatre is a fine art. And so it needs constant adjusting and constant tuning.” It’s that commitment to her artistry and to the human spirit that makes Ripley such a joy of a performer. Ripley’s passion can be seen in all her work — from high profile Broadway hits like Next to Normal and Side Show to her self-produced band RIPLEY, which has released three albums of her original music. Don’t miss enjoying Ripley’s creative energy and musical gifts in person. Her keynote will draw from a new book she’s working on titled The 3 Courageous Cs of Masterful Acting (Community, Craft, Commitment). Ripley will also lead a workshop for high schoolers and perform in concert.
Acclaimed fight director J. Allen Suddeth will share his journey of preparation and the serious set of skills that have helped him forge a 30-year career (and counting). His keynote address will cover the rise of stage combat in American theatre and in actor training. “I have a unique perspective having been part of it,” says Suddeth, “and watching it grow from a small group of interested parties into a nationwide movement specialty.” Suddeth’s storied body of work includes many well-known Broadway shows, from Disney’s Aladdin to Angels in America, and hundreds of Off-Broadway and regional theatre productions. He has also staged action sequences for more than 750 television programs. Honored as one of 16 SAFD Fight Masters, Suddeth has trained over 10,000 students around the globe. He is the author of Fight Directing for the Theatre, founder of the National Fight Directors Training Program, and producer of The Complete Unarmed Stage Combat DVD Library. With Suddeth’s proven penchant for project rehearsal, we are in for a well-choreographed afternoon.
