Welcome!

Welcome to the Set Apart Virtual Gathering 2022! We are excited to be able to offer this virtual version of the Set Apart Conference.

We are celebrating our 40th year of Set Apart, offering a special time for women to come away and be with God (Mark 6:31), and providing scholarships for UNW students to seek a Christian education. God has greatly blessed this endeavor and we stand amazed at His grace.

The conference this year is built on the theme, “He’s the Sustainer of our soul . . .” from Psalm 54:4. As we contemplated all that the world has been and is going through, we felt the desire to dwell on how God sustains us. “Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. . . For he has delivered me from all my troubles, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes. Psalm 54:4&7 We encourage you to take your time as you listen to each message.

Allow the Word of God to permeate your heart and soul. We pray that you will come away knowing, in the depths of your soul, that our Lord truly will sustain you through all that life brings.

Mission & Vision In agreement with the mission of University of

Northwestern - St. Paul and Media, the Set Apart Conference strives to equip women to grow intellectually and spiritually, to serve effectively, and to give God-honoring leadership in the home, church, community, and world by utilizing Christian speakers, relevant workshops, and fellowship opportunities while generating scholarship funds for students attending University of Northwestern.

Friday’s Morning Message: I Know Him!

It’s all too easy to waver between two mindsets: Can I trust God? I can trust Him! Will He come through for me? I’m pretty sure He will.

But what if He doesn’t? God doesn’t have to do what we think He should do, but He will most certainly do what He’s promised to do.

No matter how long you’ve walked with God, there’s so much more of Him to know and experience. How much more confidently might we go through life if we knew in whom we believed and trusted that He will guard what we've entrusted to Him? The devil wants us to waver between two opinions. God wants us to live with a faithfilled assurance that He is who He says He is and He will keep His promises to us. When trials come and the devil taunts, raise you shield and say, "I know my God! I know Him!"

Saturday’s Afternoon Message: I Trust Him! Every trial and every trouble is an invitation to trust God more than we did yesterday. God wants us to get good at remembering— remembering our good memories, remembering His faithfulness, and remembering that contrary to our fears, we came through our past trials and we’re still standing. When we recall what God has done, we'll trust Him for what He'll do. Our history with God reminds us that we have a future with Him. On the other hand, the enemy wants us rehearsing our hardships and rehashing our fears until we despair in the present and fear the future. He hopes that we'll project our fears into a future that God is not in. But for the believer, no such scenario exists. God is not bound by time. He's faithful in every season. And His hold on us is more substantial than our hold on Him. We can trust Him.

Thank You! Event Partner MN Adult and Teen Challenge Since 1983, MN Adult & Teen Challenge has been restoring hope to Minnesotans struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Our full continuum of care for men, women and teens ranges from outpatient services to residential treatment, transition planning, and aftercare. We offer: - Individualized and trauma-informed care in a gender responsive environment - Places and spaces that feel safe enough to heal - Integrated and comprehensive treatment approach - Psychiatric medicine and ambulatory withdrawal services - Treatment built around relationships and community - Family involvement and connection – we provide different ways for families and loved ones to stay connected

Nina Barnes

Transformational Conflict Jesus said, "Blessed are the Peacemakers , for they will be called children of God" (MT 5:9) Yet, the process of making peace - working to achieve genuine peace - can be intimidating! Still, every conflict is an opportunity - an invitation - to grow spiritually. The outcome will nurture healing in our lives, our families, our broader communities even the world. This workshop will explore barriers and ways forward in learning to navigate conflict with both courage and kindness.

Nina Barnes, the Vice President for Student Life and Human

Resources, began serving at the University of Northwestern–St. Paul in December 2000. Nina holds a Master of Arts degree in Spiritual Formation and Leadership, along with numerous certifications including – Human Resources Management, Conflict Coaching & Mediation, and Christian Spiritual Direction. Outside of Northwestern, Nina has a private spiritual direction and coaching practice, in addition to serving as a speaker for conferences and retreats. Nina has extensive board experience and currently serves on the board of directors for Transform Minnesota. However, her most cherished roles are mother to an adult son and “daughter-in-love,” along with her newest title of “Gramma Nina” to her sweet granddaughter.

Set Apart 40th Anniversary How It Began

Because of her love for and experience with successful women’s retreats, Marion Bildsoe (a Northwestern employee) met with Pauline Wilson, chairperson of the Northwestern Women’s Auxiliary, to suggest they hold a one-day retreat for women who worked at Northwestern. The first event was so popular that they decided to make it a conference for women the following year (1982) and opened it to interested women in the listening audience of KTIS radio.

The Conference Name

The original name of the conference, A Day Set Apart for Women was based upon Mark 6:31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. (RSV) Then and now, the conference is intended to be a time for women to come away and be with God.

The Committee

The first “committee” of “A Day Set Apart for Women” was created with members of the Women’s Auxiliary. Pauline Wilson, provided leadership for the conference until 1997, when she “passed the mantle” of leadership to Monica Groves. Monica then led the committee for 25 years! So many women have contributed their talents, time, and commitment to the conference over the course of 40 years, making Set Apart the longest running women’s faith conference in the Upper Midwest – by God’s grace!

The Lies We Believe There are lies we believe that cause us to live in the heavy, chaotic, anxious, guilt-ridden spaces in life. Yet,` there are truths that can set us free. Let’s dig into some of the lies that are holding us back from living the abundant life God has for us and share encouraging truths of how to obtain the joy and peace that He intended for us!

Niki Corbin serves as the station manager for Life 97.3 in Duluth,

Minnesota and is on air both at Life 97.3 and 98.5 KTIS in the Twin Cities. She has been with Northwestern Media for more than nine years. Niki has a degree in communications from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She is married to her wonderful husband Eli, and they have three daughters. Niki is passionate about her family, travel, coffee, and helping you learn your worth and potential in Jesus.

Fearless Faith: Let the Untold Stories of Harriet Tubman’s Faith Inspire You to Face Life Fearlessly Harriet Tubman’s exploits of escorting slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad inspires awe in those who hear the tales. What were her secrets when confronting real and present danger with such courage? Come along as we explore the source of her incredible inner strength. You will: • Learn a proven approach to fearlessly live out your calling.

• Discover three tools to empower you to conquer fear with faith.

• See visuals of where Harriet grew up and escaped from slavery.

Beth Dutton is a motivational storyteller (and former flight attendant)

whose passion is to encourage her listeners to travel into the world of the people whose stories she tells. Using her background in history, education, and Biblical studies, Beth explores each story from a cultural, contextual, and Biblical point of view. Her prayer is that you will sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey into the heart of the story, resulting in life change.

Sustaining Rest and Revival In these challenging times, how do we find a place of rest? It may feel like we are pressed on every side—yet the Lord promises us a beautiful and abundant life where we flourish. So how do we get there? Jesus slept in a boat in the middle of a storm. What was His secret and how do we follow Him? We find a place of sustaining rest from planting our feet in the promises of God and pulling down the fullness of what God has for our lives and His Kingdom purposes for this hour.

Twila Jensen, the Vice President of Finance at Minnesota Adult and

Teen Challenge and a Professor at the University of Northwestern, is the author of three books. Her newest one, Let it Be, is about finding rest for our souls in challenging times.

Maria Erickson serves as the CEO of Cradle Club and is a radio program host for The Rest of the Rest on AM980, The Mission.

Tami Brown leads Awaken the Dawn - Minnesota - a grassroots

movement of day and night worship with a passion for hosting the presence of God, leading to revival.

Bev Phillips Living Between Once-Upon-A-Time and Happily-EverAfter: God's Sovereignty in Difficult Times Often when we begin a relationship with Jesus, it feels like the sweet beginning of a wonderful story that will continue until the happilyever-after of heaven. What happens when there are big bumps or deep valleys along the way? Difficulties such as marriage, finances, cross-country relocations, miscarriages, prodigals, cancer, and aging?

Can we see His presence actively woven throughout each event and season? Let’s examine how God is our burden bearer, provider, supporter, sustainer, and helper as He authors our life stories.

He answers the question of “who’s in charge here?” while giving practical help and encouragement during the “in-between” times.

Bev Phillips and her husband have 9 adult children, 14 grandchildren,

and have been foster parents to 10. They are certified presenters of Courageous Grandparenting conferences She is on the writing team for Christian Grandparenting Network and speaks at retreats, MOPS, and other groups. She served as Care Ministry Director for Lakes Free Church for 15 years and has a B.S. in Family & Child Development and an M.A. in Human Services, Marriage, & Family. Bev is passionate about being a life-long learner of God’s Word and finding joy in the midst of hard things.

Moses was to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, and Elijah was to call them back to God when they turned to other gods. Both men expressed their fears and inadequacies to God; we may also feel this way when God calls us. And yet, the Bible shows that God faithfully equips those He calls; we can move forward in obedience knowing He is with us.

Anna Rask Emison Anna Rask is a Biblical Studies alum of the

University of Northwestern. She has been teaching Old and New Testament courses at UNWSP since 2017. Anna is working on her Ph.D. in Old Testament Theology via distance education at Union Theological College in Belfast, Northern Ireland. While studying at Jerusalem University College in Israel in 2011, as a UNWSP student, Anna felt called to pursue graduate work and confirmed her love for studying the Bible.

Satise Roddy The Faith of a Woman with Purpose God looks past the obstacles that might deter His children from trusting and believing in Him. We do not lack in terms of the promises of God, but between the reading of the promise and the enacting of the conditions of the promise in our lives, there is something we must do. We must trust, believe and obey, no matter what our circumstances. As we remain obedient to God and confident in His timing to accomplish His will for our lives, He gives grace to sustain us He also has a way of taking our circumstances and turning them completely around for His glory!

Pastor Satise Roddy is a wife, mom, and grand mom.

She is an ordained minister, author, speaker, mentor and police chaplain. She has served on the Set Apart Committee for 11+ years. Satise serves as Lead Pastor of Oasis Church in Minnetonka. She is founder of Satise Roddy Ministries, a speaking ministry. She also founded Destined Women, a women’s fellowship. She is passionate about preaching the word of God and desires to see others walk in the freedom God has provided through His Son Jesus Christ. By God’s grace Satise has been provided a platform to minister as a keynote speaker, featured speakern and workshop presenter at conferences, retreats, private, and public events.
