Principal’s Message – Mr. David Throp

Newsletter

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE I hope you all enjoyed the fantastic Primary Christmas performance, the Carol concert last evening and the Foundation concerts too. What talented and enthusiastic students SES has! Thank you to everyone who took part and helped to make the start of the festive season a really good one. Thanks also to all the staff and helpers who support these and to all of you who came to watch and listen. We cannot forget the hard work, and efforts that go into these performances and special thanks must go to Eileen Hutchison, Laurence Powell and Nasrine Davies. The school has been a hive of activity including normal lessons, and will be until we close on Thursday at 12.00 noon. We pass on our thanks to Dr Wood who leaves us this week and wish him well for his future I hope you will have a good break too over the next few weeks. We are definitely ready for one here; in spite of the two Eid breaks, it has been a long term. May I take this opportunity to thank all those who have sent cards and good wishes and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas st and a good break. We have Islamic New Year this Friday, and New Year on January 1 and I hope that these bring you health and happiness. For our students, I wish them some rest over the break, but for some who need to do some hard work, I remind them that mock examinations and GCE external examinations commence very soon after our return. Mr David Main and Miss Shereen Razvi will be joining the Science department in January. New Chairman; John Farrer, the Board Chairman over the past few years, has retired to the UK. We thank him for his dedication and commitment to SES and wish him well for the future. Steve Thompson is the new Board Chairman. We look forward to his term as Chair and assure him of our full support. Merry Christmas, winter break and New Year to everyone, and thank you all for the support you have given the school this term.

David Throp, Principal

Primary Christmas Performance Last Wednesday evening an audience of parents, relatives and friends were treated to a marvelous performance of the Primary School's Christmas Production "My Xmas Metro". The backdrop was a stunning metro train, the costumes were a riot of colour, the children were talented and truly professional and the singing uplifting. Well done to all involved! I just don't know how they are going to better it next year! A new Auditorium perhaps? We would also like to thank everyone for their generous donations. We collected Dhs 3,200 which will be shared between the charities ‘ALL AS ONE’ and ‘Cystic Fibrosis.

Foundation Concert Thank you to Foundation staff and children who put on a lovely Christmas performance. It is wonderful to see the youngest members of our school putting in so much effort and enthusiasm and overcoming their apprehension to perform in front of an audience.

Appeal from the PSG The PSG are putting together a recipe book and are looking for recipes from around the world. If you have a favourite recipe that you would like to share please send it into school. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Primary Christmas Parties We would like to thank the PSG for their generosity to help fund the Christmas parties for the Primary children. It is also thanks to the PSG that Santa Claus was able to pay a visit to the Primary School on Tuesday and hand out presents to the children. As always, their support is very much appreciated. Primary Clubs Children in Years 3 to 6 are eligible for extra窶田urricular activities which will start on Sunday 17th January. A list of activities will be sent out with them after the holidays on Sunday 3rd January. Please help your child select one or two clubs and mark them on the sheet so that they are able to tell their class teachers their choices on Tuesday 5th January. We will do our best to fit your child into at least one activity of his/her choice.

SES SPORTS & ACTIVITIES BULLETIN No. 3

Year 6 Netball Tournament at D.E.S.S Last Thursday, the year 6 netball girls took part in a tournament at D.E.S.S. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and it was an excellent opportunity for them to play against other schools. The level of competition was very high therefore our girls were especially delighted to win one of their matches. They all played well and showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Three of our players – Kyra, Georgie and Charlotte - were chosen for player of the match which was an excellent achievement for the girls – well done!

YEAR 6 “DANCE OFF” The Year 6 students studied a type of dance called ‘stepping’ in their PE lessons this year. Stepping was originally used as a way of communicating to other workers in the mines of South Africa to warn others of any danger. Using the feet, hands and voices the year 6 students created their own stepping moves. The two Year 6 classes came together to battle in front of a panel of judges to demonstrate their steps. Ms Race, Mrs Seaborne, Mr Smithard, Mrs Southworth and Mr Garrett rated each performance on their unity, originality and confidence.

To complete the battle, the students had the chance to show off their ‘freestyle’ moves to some music. The scores were added up and 6CS were the champions of the dance off! Well done Year 6, we have some fantastic dancers at SES!

S.E.S Triumph at Uptown Sharjah English School played Uptown High School in their first ever basketball match. The game which was organised into 4 periods of 10 minutes started off with Year 11 GCSE PE student Steph Liwo scoring the first basket. At the half way mark S.E.S were just 2 points clear. A tactical change in defence proved a winning decision when S.E.S extended their lead by 8 points with some strong rebounding and sharp shooting by Wyatt Colinares sinking 6 points within the space of 2 minutes. The final quarter saw Uptown close within 3 points of Sharjah after some sloppy passing through fatigue but S.E.S closed the game as victors on 44 – 48. An excellent performance from the whole team: Steph Liwo (C) MVP, Dwayne Ferreira, Omar Ghosn, Arm Young, Wyatt Colinares, Ben Menzies, Sam Dick, Anthony Collins.

U18 Football at JESS The U18 football team experienced good opposition at the inaugural JESS U18 7-a-side tournament. S.E.S found it tough going against well drilled teams but enjoyed the experience and worked hard throughout the 15min games. Special mention must go to Edric Cate for superb goalkeeping.

GENTLE REMINDERS

PE Kit – Please make every effort to ensure that you pack all of your PE

white socks

kit, including for every lesson. Bring a small towel, water bottle and roll-on deodorant. No spray cans please. We do have a small selection of ‘unattractive and totally un-cool’ spare kit that we will issue to anyone who forgets to bring kit. You have been warned! Water Bottles – Please remember to bring a water bottle to PE Lessons and after school clubs. Injury and/or sickness – We encourage all students to be involved in every PE lesson, therefore if for whatever reason your son/daughter is unable to participate in PE we would expect a note of explanation to be handed to the teacher before the start of the lesson. Any student unable to participate in the practical aspect of the lesson should still bring PE kit as they will be expected to take on a less physically demanding role such as referee or coach. Lost Property – If you leave something in the PE Dept then there is a good chance it will end up in the lost property basket. This is emptied at the beginning of every week and taken to the nurses’ room in the Primary school. Please do not bring anything of value into school.

If you need to contact the PE Dept staff for any reason here’s how: Miss Welsh (HOD/Senior Girls PE) Mrs Garrett (Primary PE Co-ordinator) Mrs Southworth (Primary PE/Dance) Mr Garrett (Senior Boys PE/GCSE PE) Mr Rees (Senior PE)
