Pastor's PERSPECTIVE
EMBRACING FAITH & COMMUNITY
Servant Faith Family,
Give Thanks! That’s the theme of the month of November here at Church of the Servant. As you read this, we spent the first Sunday of the month celebrating and giving thanks for those from our family of faith who have entered into God’s heavenly kingdom over the past year. On Sunday, November 10, we will have our annual veterans celebration, giving thanks for the men and women in our faith community and their families who have given of themselves in service to our country. On the remaining Sundays we will focus upon how we,
as individuals and as a faith community, can live lives of continual thanksgiving as Paul encourages us to “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thess. 5:16-18).
In the spirit of giving thanks, I also want to personally thank each of you who have already made a commitment to supporting your church family financially in 2025. On Commitment Sunday, 125 families committed to supporting Church of the Servant shining the light of Christ in our community throughout 2025 with financial gifts totaling $739,996. Through your generosity, I am confident that not only our faith family but the community beyond our walls will be blessed in the year to come. For those of you who have yet to do so, know there is plenty of time for you to partner with your family of faith by making a financial commitment as well. You can return your pledge card any Sunday morning or at the church office, or do so online at servantokc.org/commitment-card.
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, there is much for which to be thankful. Most of all, I give thanks for the God who has blessed us with the gift of one another and the opportunity to share life together here in this wonderful place. I look forward to celebrating that God and serving him alongside each of you once again next week. See you soon!
Blessings,
Kyle

BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1st, 12:30 PM CHAPEL OF THE CROSS
While the seasons of Advent and Christmas are a special time in the Christian year, we know that this season is not particularly joyous for all of our family. This service is specifically designed for those who are experiencing, or seek to support and encourage those who are experiencing, feelings of grief and loss this holiday season.
CHILDREN’S PAGEANT
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15th, DURING SERVICE
During our celebration service this Sunday, we will have an extended time dedicated to the children of our church as they share with us, through music and words, the story of Christmas. If you would like your child or grandchild to participate, rehearsals will be taking place during the Sunday School hour beginning November 3rd.
Journey to the Manger SERMON SERIES
Each Sunday we will focus on an individual or group that traveled to celebrate Christ’s birth long ago: Mary, Joseph, Shepherds, Angels, and Wisemen. Through song, drama, and messages we will examine how their stories might influence our journey to Christ today.
A Moment at the Manger LIVE NATIVITY
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15th, 5-7 PM
Join the Servant Youth, Celebration Choir, and friends as they share the Christmas story through our annual live nativity.
City of Hope CHRISTMAS CANTATA
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22nd, DURING SERVICE
Join us as we receive a special message through music as presented by the Celebration Choir under the direction of Rev. Sheri Lashley. If you desire to participate in the cantata be sure to join Choir rehearsals at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings now!
CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLELIGHT SERVICE
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24th, 6 PM
Invite your friends and family to join us as we celebrate the greatest gift the world has ever received: the gift of Christ our Savior. In our service, we will turn to scripture, sing Christmas favorites, and conclude with Holy Communion, candle lighting, and the singing of Silent Night.
"CITY OF HOPE"
A CHRISTMAS CANTATA
There is nothing quite like hearing a choir sing Christmas songs. When we put those songs together, with some fantastic solo voices, and add some narration, we have a Cantata, or a musical composition of voices and instruments. The Celebration Choir will be offering a Cantata for Christmas during the morning worship on December 22, at 10:OO AM. The name of the Cantata is City of Hope, by Tom Fettke and Jay Rouse. As the publisher wrote about this work, the word "hope" is the feeling that what is wanted can be had or will turn out for the best.
We know that Hope was born over 2000 years ago, in the small town of Bethlehem. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” We always need hope in our lives, and there is no better time to feel that hope than at the time of Advent, or the time of Christ’s birth. Hope is no longer a feeling, but becomes a solid truth where we can build our lives.
This Cantata has several tunes that you will know, as well as some words to Christmas Carols that will be familiar. I pray that you will come to hear the choir, and bring a friend or two that might need a little bit of hope as well.
Join the Cantata!
Our choir has already begun practicing for the "City of Hope" Christmas Cantata. I invite you to sing with us as we prepare for the production. We will offer this to God as we perform it on December 22, 2024, during morning worship. If you would like to sing with us, we invite you to come to practice on Wednesday nights at 6:30-8:00 PM. Join in the fun!

NOTES FROM PASTOR SHERI
We are moving through this year so very quickly! I cannot believe we are planning on Christmas in every area of church. Hobby Lobby has had their Christmas decorations out for awhile, but they aren’t in the back of the store now, they are really up front and in your face! But I do not complain, because this time really is truly my favorite time of the year. I love Easter, and Summer vacations, and I love the leaves of autumn turning to beautiful colors. But there is just something about the Advent and Christmas season, that makes church folk so joyful. It doesn’t matter what the church needs, clothes for a child, food for families, toys for someone who cannot provide….you all open your wallets, or you shop for children. The churches are all decorated with finery, more than any other time of the year, church sanctuaries are beautiful. And the halls here at Servant, and in the Celebration Center, and all through this place are going to be one of the finest decorated churche that I have ever seen.
There are church music specials planned – dinners and cantatas and Christmas programs. Sunday Schools are planning their parties,
and people are making their shopping lists, and preparing to buy all the things that will make this year special. People are baking, and making candy, and as usual, Earthglow is hosting their annual craft show - Earthglow Market – where you can shop for all the little things you didn’t know you needed!
I love Christmas lights, beautiful light shows and Christmas music, and taking children to see the Nutcracker Ballet; seeing all the Christmas movies, some of which are traditions that our families go to see, or make popcorn and sit and watch together at home.
People are flying home for Christmas, or flying out for Christmas, or just coming to see grandparents, or children, or grandchildren.
And I haven’t forgotten that we give thanks in the middle of all the planning, to give thanks for so many things. Thanksgiving can get wrapped up in the Christmas festivities if we don’t make intentional time for ourselves to give thanks.

I pray that in the midst of all of the above, and so much more, that you find some moments to look inside your heart, and see the places that could use some cleaning out, so that you find room for Jesus into your heart and life just a little more. Jesus comes to us all the time. As we unwrap our gifts, might we truly unwrap the greatest gift we have ever received, Jesus Christ our Savior, coming to us as a baby swaddled in a piece of cloth, humbly born to two people, barely betrothed, and sleeping in a barn, in a cattle feeder, with animals nearby. What a gift! What a time! What a joy! May this season find you warm, joyous, and loved.

HANGING OF THE GREENS INVITATION
For me, Fall Fest is the unofficial start of the holiday season; it’s time to think about preparing our church for the joyous celebration of Christmas. I invite you to join us for the Hanging of the Greens on November 24, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Troop 177 will graciously bring out the Christmas trees prior to the 24th, and while they will be mostly set up, we will need a helping hand to fluff them, string lights, and place various other decorations...
To help us organize this joyful event, please register at the information tables on Sunday or register online at ServantOKC. org/events. Together we will decorate our church in preparation for the upcoming Advent season. Bring a treat to share and we will conclude our time at 4:30 in the Celebration Center with a small service of song, prayer for the upcoming season, and a reminder of the meaning behind all our decorations!
This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a church family and create a warm and festive atmosphere that reflects the spirit of the season. Your participation will make a significant difference, and I look forward to seeing many of you there!
Blessings,
Eric Nance

The children are invited to help decorate the church on November 24 from 2:00-5:00 PM, AND they will make their very own Chrismons! Sunday morning during the 10:00 worship service, children will make Chrismons to hang on the church Christmas trees, and at the Hanging of the Greens (2:00-5:00 PM) the children will make Chrismons to take home! We will learn what the Chrismons mean and how they help us to celebrate this special season! We hope you can join us! Please register at ServantOKC.org/events

Join us for a magical night under the stars with a LIVE nativity and narration of the great story of the birth of Jesus! Enjoy Christmas carols, camels, cookies & cocoa, and more! Admission is FREE and open to all ages.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Just like any great event, it’s only as good as its volunteers. We need setup and clean-up crew, carolers (choir), cast for the nativity, greeters, and people to pass out cookies and cocoa. We will be set up on the south lawn, and we will work in shifts so we can step inside to warm up between shifts. If you are available to help with this wonderful night, please register at ServantOKC.org/events.

POINT OF GRACE CONCERT WITH DARCI LYNNE WAS EVEN BETTER THAN WE COULD HAVE IMAGINED!
Over 600 friends and family from Church of the Serant and the local community were blessed with an evening of beautiful music on Thursday, the 24th of October. The event was opened by Darci Lynn Farmer, a fan-favorite of the church she grew up in. Darci Lynne balanced her performance with solo spots and shared the stage with her trusted companions Petunia and Oscar.
The evening continued with Point of Grace, a trio of gifted women composed of Shelley Breen, Denise Jones, and Leigh Cappillino, who have been singing together since college. They shared their musical gifts of rich harmonies and glorious melodies, performing a medley of songs, including ones from their latest set, Turn Your Eyes (Songs We Love, Songs You Know) Volume II, which received a Dove Award for Inspirational Album of the Year (2023). Combined with their beautiful music, they shared excerpts from their book How You Live: Lessons Learned from Point of Grace. Using their musical talents and gift of writing, they performed for the glory of God, engaging fans of all ages.
We would like to express a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Women's Vision Team for hosting this event and to all of the wonderful volunteers who ushered, provided snack for the talent, decorated the dressing rooms, worked the Will Call table, checked in the guests, and worked one-on-one with the talent. This would not have been possible without each and every one of you!

SERVANT YOUTH UPDATE
Over Fall Break in October, the Servant Youth group partnered with the youth group from Stillwater for a Mission Trip. The youth worked hard at Urban mission filling food sacks, OKC beautiful cleaning up Dolese Park, and at the Regional Food Bank packing food boxes. These youth demonstrated the ability to work together, make new friends and share in being the hands and feet of Christ. When asked if the youth would like to do this kind of work again, there was a unanimous “YES!” More trips of service will be planned in the future!
The youth were joined by Kyle Anderson, Debra Tuls, Daniel Marmen and Chris Ward.
Servant Youth group meets Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:00 pm. All Youth grades 6-12 are welcome to join! Contact Chris Ward at cward@churchoftheservant.com for more information.

FALL FEST WAS A HIT!
Thank you to everyone who donated items, ran a booth, set up the event, and cleaned up after it was over! We had lots of trick-or-treaters from the community. It was a great outreach. The Booths that took the top honors of being “favorites” were #3 Room on the Broom by the Anderson family, #2 The Diner put together by Randy and Nancy Dunn, and #1 was Pokémon by Cathy and James Maxwell. Also, a special thanks to our own Servant Youth group for running candy and face painting! Until next year when we do it all again!

WHIZ KIDS IS GREAT!
Our Whiz Kids have been working very hard to improve their reading skills. They read for at least 30 minutes of the tutoring time and then can play educational games the rest of the time. About half of them have completed all their sight words! In October we honored our special Clubtime leader, Sherri Price. We presented her with a cape with her name in glitter on the back, a crown, flowers, and read a poem about her. She does such a great job of bringing the message of God's love for us every week. Plus, she makes it really fun! She is also responsible for celebrating the kids on their birthdays. She gives the kids a red cape and a heart pillow to remind them of God's love. They also get a birthday bracelet. Thank you, Sherri for all you do for us.

On October 28, the kids had fun drawing Jack-O-Lantern faces on small oranges.
We appreciate everyone at Servant and the support you have given our Whiz Kids site for 15 years.

EXODUS HOUSE
Let me tell you about Shawn. He arrived at Exodus House Oklahoma City just a week ago. His story was one of using all kinds of drugs, being estranged from his family, and being on the run from the law. They finally caught him and gave him some prison time.
After doing classes in prison and adjusting his focus, he contacted Exodus House Oklahoma City to come to our program upon release. When he arrived, he had a sweet spirit about him. Within the first week, we were able to assist him in getting a job. At last night’s graduation

for another client, Shawn told me a story of seeing someone who needed a few extra dollars to pay for their groceries while in line at the store earlier that day. He said, “I did a quick prayer, Lord, I only have a few dollars in my pocket until I get paid, but if you want me to share it with this lady, I will.”He stepped out in faith and paid the remaining amount the lady needed for her groceries.
When he turned around to walk away, he looked down and there was a $20 bill on the ground. God had blessed him with even more than he’d given away.

I’m coming to you right now to ask you to bless Criminal Justice and Mercy Ministries (CJAMM) with support for our annual friend-and-fund-raising event for the operations of this amazing ministry. We are planning Spruce Up A Life for November 20. This will be a holiday dinner festivity with a silent auction and live auction for decorated Christmas trees. Even if you can’t come to the event, I’d invite you to purchase a table or a couple tickets so we can invite others to come be a part of the event. Table prices range from $500 to however-much-you-feel impressed to give. Individual tickets are $50 each.
Thanks for considering a gift for a better future for Shawn, Shauna, Mar ty, Adam, Courtney, Cody, Mikala, Floyd, and others who are in the Exodus House program. You are welcome to purchase tickets/table on our website at www.cjamm.org

CHRISTMAS GRACE has been a Church of the Servant tradition for over 20 years! Each year, we work with community agencies that have identified local families needing a little extra love and care at Christmas. Christmas Grace preparation is well underway! We will have a list of numerous families and individuals needing gifts for Christmas. Won’t you join us in spreading Christmas cheer by being the hands and feet of Christ this season?!
Beginning Sunday, November 3, Christmas Grace tables will be set up in the Concourse. Please stop by the tables to learn about each organization and their needs. Each table will have a list of families and individuals to choose from. Plan now with your family and your classes and small groups to sponsor a family or individual. This is one of the many ways in which we follow the teachings of Jesus and reach out with His great love!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Christmas Grace forms will be available at the concourse tables each Sunday morning beginning November 3rd.
You can choose from individuals with specific requests or bulk items needed by the agency. We are serving Exodus House (adults who have been incarcerated), Infant Crisis Services (emergency supplies for children age birth to 4), Lazarus Community (transitional living and other services for people in need), Meals on Wheels (meals delivered to home bound seniors), Neighborhood Services Organization Carolyn Williams Center (transitional living for boys aging out of foster care), and Skyline (items for their Christmas Pop-Up Store). There is a large variety of people you will be helping.
You will receive a large plastic bag with ID tags to use for returning your gifts.
Please plan to return all gifts to the church any Sunday during November or by the final return day of December 8. We will have extra helpers Sunday, December 8, to get all the bags checked in. Thanks to everyone who has supported Christmas Grace in the past or might be participating for the first time this year. We appreciate all of your help in providing these special gifts.

OUR AFGHAN NEIGHBORS THE SPERO PROJECT
This past month has marked the beginning of a new fiscal year as a Reception and Placement agency, which means we have started a new round of welcoming newly arriving Afghan neighbors! This year, we are excited to welcome up to 200 new neighbors!
In this next week alone, we are welcoming three families, and have had other families relocate to Oklahoma City with little to no items. Our supply of furniture and household items is incredibly low, so we are reaching out for help!
We have an urgent need to restock our furniture and household items, and would love to make our newly arriving families, as well as families that have recently relocated, to feel set up for success and feel welcomed and supported.
Below you will find links to our registries (these items will ship directly to us!), as well as lists of items that can be gently used but in good condition. We are always happy to coordinate item pickup. You can also make a donation to Afghan Neighbors through by giving to the Fish on Sunday mornings, or by giving online at ServantOKC.org/fishfund

CARE MINISTRY
ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA CAREGIVERS’ SUPPORT GROUP
Do you have a loved one who is dealing with Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia? If so, we invite you to come to our support group, which meets on the third Tuesday of each month (3:00 – 4:30 PM) at Church of the Servant in the Library. The meeting dates for the next few months are: November 19th , December 17th and January 21st. Our group is an official support group offered by our local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and our group facilitators have been trained by that same local chapter. The group is open to anyone in our community whose family has been affected by dementia. You can register by contacting Vicki Roberds at (405) 728-4738 or vroberds@churchoftheservant.com. Whether your loved one is living at home, or if they’re a resident at a care facility…either way, we hope you’ll consider attending. If you need care for your loved one during the time you’re at the meeting, you’ll need to make your own arrangements for that care. There is no cost to register for the group. We hope you’ll consider staying connected with others who are going through a similar experience that you are. A burden that is shared is always a burden that becomes lighter. Come and see what kinds of blessings come your way when you become part of the giving and receiving of support.

Blue Christmas
For many, Christmas is not ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ (as the song goes). A Blue Christmas service can offer some healing and hope. The idea behind the Blue Christmas service is to create space for the acknowledgment of the heaviness often carried during this season, as well as offering the hope that Jesus gives.
Our society has become one of masking emotions that are sometimes considered negative. The Bible clearly acknowledges, celebrates, and makes space for pain, struggle, hardship, and tears – and so should we. In fact, science, too, is catching up to the Bible, as recent studies confirm that the “claim-your-happiness” pop psychology isn’t healthy for us physically, socially, or spiritually – and that putting on a smile without making space for the tough stuff of life actually leads to more (and deeper) unhappiness. This Blue Christmas service is a beautiful way to make space during the Advent season for those suffering any kind of loss – whether the loss of a person, a dream, finances, stability, health, or more.
We will offer a Blue Christmas service on December 1, 2024 at 12:30 PM in the Chapel of the Cross. There will be a way that you can decorate the Remembrance Tree, and remember that your loss is still with you in the season, and how we might remember, and still be ok to celebrate the season.

All Saints
Sunday
November 3rd
While all Sundays are important here at Church of the Servant, I want to extend a special invitation for you to join us for our annual All Saints celebration. This is a time for the Servant faith family to remember and give thanks for those in our family who have entered into God’s eternal kingdom over the past year. Our entire service this day will connect to this theme, including a time of reading the name and lighting a candle in memory of each individual. I know you find it just as important as I do that we give thanks for those who have gone before us, and I look forward to seeing you on November 3rd!
Blessings, Kyle

Church of the Servant will be offering a support group for those who are going through a season of grief. We are using GriefShare as the resource. If you are interested, please contact Vicki Roberds in the church office or by email at vroberds@ churchoftheservant.com
A GriefShare support group is a safe, welcoming place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. Through this 13-week group, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead and what’s “normal” in grief. Since there are no neat, orderly stages of grief, you’ll learn helpful ways of coping with grief, in all its unpredictability—and gain solid support each step of the way.

HOW CAN WE PRAY FOR YOU?
PLEASE KEEP THE CARE TEAM INFORMED OF THE NEEDS OF OUR CHURCH FAMILY!
Call Vicki Roberds at 405-728-4738 or email at vroberds@churchoftheservant.com.

C HURCH OF THE SERVANT LEADERSHIP TEAM UPDATE
Your Leadership Team met on Sunday evening. I was surprised and pleased at how short the meeting was (only 2 hours) and that is due mostly to Todd’s leadership and holding to the posted agenda.
The meeting opened, as always, with a prayer of thanksgiving and for guidance. Spiritual development was led by Brian Dickerson and leadership development was led by Pastor Kyle.
The first order of business is the “consent calendar.” Three items – Minutes of the previous meeting, Financial Report and Senior Pastor Report – are sent to the Team earlier in the week for study and comment. During the meeting, all were approved with one vote and no need for discussion.
Next item on the agenda is called “Creative Work” (you and I would call it committee reports).
• Eric Nance reported on the mold remediation in the choir room. The mold has been successfully removed and the air is now safe again. Where is the water coming from? That question is still to be answered. Eric said that we need to wait for rain!
• Building use taskforce: No report, except to say that a team is now in place and will study the use of the building as well as use policies.
• Servant Foundation: A list of candidates has been provided by the nominations committee to replace those board members who have left our church. These will be considered at the Church Conference to be held on November 3.
• Computer/IT taskforce: No report, but there is a team of professionals in place and studying needs and sources to update equipment and software that we need.
• Safety & Security taskforce: No report, however Eric and the team is in place and studying needs and possible solutions.
All these are major agenda items and will continue to be major areas of “Creative Work” for the Team.
We also discussed the Church Conference. All Church Members are invited – 1PM on Sunday, November 3. This is an important meeting in which we will approve the pastors’ compensation, new Leadership Team members and Foundation board members, along with other business as needed.
The Christmas Tree will be lighted again this year. Dustin Denman, with Red Clay Construction, is donating his time and labor again this year, along with some financial support from various Sunday School classes.
We always welcome all church members as visitors to all Leadership Team meetings. Times and dates are posted on the website. If you have any questions or comments please contact any of the Leadership Team members at any time. We are eager to hear from you.
