O ano era 1994, pela primeira vez tive contato com um computador que exibia imagens. Antes eram máquinas só para textos e cálculos, com uma tela verde, disquetes enormes e flexíveis. O que via naquele momento parecia algo totalmente diferente. Lembro que pensei: “deve dar pra desenhar”. Tudo muito primário, poucos recursos, difícil desenhar com mouse... Logo estava criando minhas primeiras gravuras. Arquivos que, quando impressos, viravam desenhos em série. As tintas não resistiam muito tempo à ação da luz, logo ficavam desbotadas e quase desapareciam. Mesmo assim eu via naquele mundo digital um terreno fértil para desenvolver um trabalho novo. Não sabia como chamar aquele trabalho em série que era impresso. Chamei de infogravura.

A tecnologia já tinha começado a fazer parte do meu trabalho alguns anos antes, quando em 1989 fiz um workshop com Bené Fonteles na UFC (Universidade Federal do Ceará), onde se usava copiadoras para fazer arte. Comecei a usar imagens de cinema e de TV reproduzidas em xerox e interferir nessas imagens pintando. Usava transparências para inverter essas imagens, ampliava em pedaços como em um outdoor. O computador veio agilizar e enriquecer todo esse processo.

Em 1995 fiz com Aléxia Brasil e Carlos Otávio a primeira exposição de infogravuras na Ibeu Art Gallery. Eram trabalhos impressos em papéis em pequenos formatos e uma gravura em papel plotada em tamanho maior – os recursos ainda eram muito limitados. Acredito que o trabalho se consolidou seis anos depois com a exposição Abraço de Cinema, em 2001 no Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura. Ali eu já usava impressões com tintas resistentes em lonas de grandes formatos. Com a gravura Paixão, que fazia parte desta exposição, ganhei o Prêmio Gravura do Salão de Abril. Sobre ela, registra Herbert Rolim, no livro Salão de Abril – De casa para o mundo, do mundo para casa: “Foi o primeiro caso de infogravura, que aparece nos registros do Salão de Abril, reconhecido como categoria.” Com este mesmo trabalho fui convidado a participar da III Bienal do Mercosul, também em 2001.

Digital Art

by Sérgio Helle The year was 1994, for the first time I had contact with a computer that could display images. Before that, computers were just machines to write texts or solve complex mathematic equations with those green screens and huge floopy disks. Then I saw something that seemed completely different. I remember thinking: Maybe we can use this to draw. In the beginning, everything was rudimentary, with few resources, and it was hard to draw using a mouse. But soon I was creating my first images. Files that when printed, turned into a sequence of drawings. Unfortunately the ink didn´t resist too long to the exposure to light. The colors were soon fadded to a point that they almost disappeared. Yet I saw that the digital world was an interesting ground to develop a new work. I didn´t know how to call that work I was printing, until I decided to call it “infogravura” (Digital Art).

No catálogo da exposição Abraço de Cinema escrevi um texto que definia o que seria infogravura para mim:

O QUE É INFOGRAVURA? A informática tem revolucionado todas as áreas de trabalho e, embora seja ainda tudo muito novo, são muitos os artistas que hoje em dia usam o computador como instrumento de criação, contribuindo para o enriquecimento da gravura como técnica e via de comunicação. Um dos resultados dessas novas experiências é a infogravura, técnica que utiliza conceitos da gravura tradicional, como xilo, metal e lito.

A matriz da infogravura é um arquivo digital. Em vez do buril, ponta seca e goivas gravando a madeira ou metal, o artista utiliza mesa digitalizadora, mouse e softwares de editoração de imagens. A impressão se dá por meio de plotters ou impressoras com o uso de diversos materiais. A gravura é considerada original, quando assinada e numerada pelo artista. O computador, no caso, não é utilizado somente como mero instrumento de reprodução, mas também de criação, ao oferecer inúmeros recursos e ilimitadas cores e matizes. Por ser um múltiplo, a gravura tem um custo menor do que a pintura, tornando a criação artística mais acessível. Mas isso não faz dela uma obra menor. A gravura pertence a um dos capítulos mais notáveis da história do ser humano, que descobriu em cada época, o instrumento para dominar os suportes mais diversos.

Nesses últimos dezoito anos fiz todo tipo de experiências usando diferentes programas, equipamentos e materiais para imprimir. A tecnologia se desenvolveu de uma forma em que quase tudo que se pensa é possível . Ainda.

Technology was already part of my work before 1994. In 1989 I attended a workshop with Bene Fonteles at UFC (Ceará´s Federal University). There, they were already using photocopiers to create art. I started using photocopied images from movies and TV. I would interfere with these images, painting and changing them. I would rotate the images, enlarge piece by piece, like we see in bilboards.

The computer came to speed up and enrich this process.

In 1995, alongside Aléxia Brasil and Carlos Otávio, I created the first Digital Art exhibition at Ibeu Art Gallery. The works were printed in smal formats on papers and one image was printed in a larger size. The resources were still very limited.

I believe the work was consolidated six years later, in 2001, wtih the Abraços de Cinema exhibition at Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura. At that moment, I was already using a more resistant ink and was already able to print in a larger format. With my work Passion, which was part of this exhibit, I won the “Prêmio Gravura do Salão de Abril”.

About it, Herbert Rolim wrote it on the “Salão de Abril – De casa para o mundo, do mundo para casa” book: “It was the first case of Digital Art that appears in the Salão de Abril records, recognized as a category.” With the same image, I participated in the III Bienal do Mercosul, that same year.

In the Abraços de Cinema exhibition catalog, I wrote a text that defines what i think Digital Art means to me: What is Digital Art? Computers and technology have revolutionized all areas of work and, even though everything is still new, there are many artists today that have computers as tools to help them create their art, contributing to the enrichment of printmaking as a technique and communication route. A result of these experiences is Digital Art, which uses concepts of traditional printing, such as xylography, metal and lithography. The starting point of a Digital Art image is a digital file. Rather than the burin, drypoint or gouges engraving wood, metal or stone, the artist uses computers, mouse and softwares to edit and create his images. These works can be printed in different materials. The image is considered original, when signed and numbered by the artist. The computer is not used to reproduce, but to create, offering numerous features and unlimited colors and hues. Because of its multiple use, printing are less expensive than painting, making it more affordable to artistic creation. But that doesn´t make it less of a work. Printing belongs to one of the most remarkable chapters in human history, who discovered in each time, the instrument to master the most diverse media.

For the last eighteen years, I have conducted experiments using all kind of softwares, equipaments and materials to print. Technology has developed in a way that almost everything you think, is possible. Yet.

Existem pessoas que veem o mundo através da fé e organizam religiões. Existem pessoas que pensam o mundo através da lógica e elaboram universos que imaginam reais. Existem pessoas que se deixam possuir pelo que sentem, elaboram imaginações e dedicam suas existências a construir vidas e mundos como sonham que eles podem ser ou são. Estes últimos são os artistas.

Entre os artistas, encontramos aqueles que trabalham com os sons, com as palavras, com os gestos; outros com imagens. Helle é um destes artistas que trabalha com as imagens. Cria pequenos flagrantes visuais que não sabemos se da vida ou dos sonhos. E, para criar essas imagens, Helle emprega todo o arsenal que um artista hoje pode dispor.

There are people who see the world through faith and organized religion. There are people who think the world through logic and elaborate universes that they imagine it´s real. There are people who let themselves to be carried away by what they feel, elaborating thoughts and devoting their existence to building lives and worlds as they dream it can be or are. The latter are the artist.

Among artists, we can find those who work with sounds, words, gestures or images. Helle is one of those artists that work with images. He creates small visual flagrants that we don´t know if it´s real or from his dreams. And to create those images, Helle uses all the tools and resources available to an artist today.

And what are these images that Helle is offering us? Strongly coherent with what he has always expressed, he presents us with close range images. They are close-ups or fragments of his visions that induce us to a wider perception of them.

This way, in our minds, Helle´s images seem to grow beyond themselves and expanding as music notes in a silent gaze.

They spread, making us realize what wasn´t explicitly said or shown. The images created by Helle, allow us to enter his artistic poetry. It was so in Abraços and Acqua.

E que imagens são essas que Helle nos oferenda?

Profundamente coerente no que sempre expressou, o que ele nos apresenta são imagens em plano próximo e campo de raio curto; são closes ou fragmentos de visões que induzem a percepções mais amplas. Nesse sentido, em nossas mentes, as imagens de Helle parecem se derramar para além de si mesmas. Expandem-se como notas sonoras no silêncio do olhar. Alastram-se fazendo-nos perceber o que ali não foi explicitamente dito ou mostrado. Elas, as imagens criadas por Helle, nos permitem adentrar na poética do artista. Era assim em Abraços, é assim em Acqua.

No início, na mente do artista existe apenas uma poética amorfa. Depois, tomando como exemplo o processo criativo da série Acqua, Helle concebe e dirige performances, em que utiliza modelos vestidos em figurinos preconcebidos, confeccionados em cores cuidadosamente selecionadas, realizadas em ambientes que permitem o surgimento de imagens incomuns e inesperadas, enriquecidas pelas distorções possibilitadas pelo ambiente fluido e cristalino das águas translúcidas de piscinas em dia de sol.

Para apreender as imagens resultantes das performances que propõe, Helle recorre às soluções tecnológicas disponíveis na atualidade, como a fotografia e o vídeo (em câmeras subaquáticas, quando necessário) e, principalmente, usa os saberes clássicos das artes pictóricas para selecionar imagens que a sua mente de artista percebe carregadas de vigor formal, harmonia rítmica, riqueza de cor e forte teor poético.

Selecionadas as imagens que convêm ao seu trabalho, Helle as recorta com sabedoria na investigação dos limites do equilíbrio; manipula-as na procura de composições ricas em texturas, brilho cromático e variação de tons que permitem a materialização da aspiração plástico-formal que, no princípio, existia apenas de modo indistinto em sua mente. Aqui (talvez) o artista inicia a parte mais complexa do seu trabalho: materializar como obra o que antes era sonho.

Continuamente ligado à figuração, Helle utiliza a figura como ponto de partida para a mais perfeita decodificação, uma espécie de âncora que o artista oferta ao espectador para que ele possa melhor desfrutar das formas, texturas e cores que nos propõe. Ou, como ele mesmo diz: “ir se perdendo da figura para encontrar a abstração”.

Todavia, se entendermos a abstração como operação do espírito, da mente ou do olhar que isola de uma ideia ou

In the beginning, inside his mind there is only an abstract poetry. Then, taking as an example the creative process of the series Acqua, Helle conceives and directs performances, where he uses models dressed in preconceived outfits made with carefully selected colors. Those performances happen in an environment that allows the appearance of unusual and unexpected images, enriched by the distortions made possible by crystal clear waters of a pool in a sunny day.

To seize the resulting images of these perfomances, Helle uses technologies available today, such as photography and video, using underwater cameras when necessary.

Then, Helle basically uses the knowledge of the classical pictorial arts to select the images that his mind sees as the ones full of rhythmic harmony, richness of color and strong poetic content.

After selecting the images that are suited to his work, Helle manages them wisely, investigating the boundaries of balance, juggling with them to search for compositions that are rich in texture, chromatic brightness and variation of tones that will allow him to give life to what was only in his mind. Here, maybe, the artist begins the most complex part of his work: Create as art what was once only a dream.

Permanently connected to figuration, Helle utilizes a figure as a starting point for a more perfect decodification, a sort of an anchor which the artist offers the viewers, so they can better enjoy the shapes, textures and colors he presents us.

Or as he says it: “lose yourself in the image, so you can find abstraction.”

visão apenas um elemento ou fragmento, negligenciando outros, em todo o seu trabalho artístico Helle sempre fez abstrações. Foi abstrato. “Sempre pintei ‘aos pedaços’, com pigmentos ou pixels”, ele reafirma.

Dos Abraços ao Acqua, ele nunca foi preocupado com a representação literal das coisas. Sempre teve propósitos expressivos maiores que a literalidade de suas imagens.

Mesmo quando trabalha com as figuras, ele apenas as toma como ponto de partida, preocupando-se mais em manifestar as cores, as texturas, em fazer pintura que representar contextos objetivos.

Agora, na série Fragmenta, Helle parece libertar-se de qualquer preocupação com o real. Abstraiu de vez, poderíamos dizer até com certa radicalidade se não fosse o seu jeito manso de ser. Entretanto, apesar da aparente mudança do figurativo para a abstração total, Helle continua o mesmo artista de sempre; coerente com o que oferece a seu público e mantendo as mesmas preocupações estéticas: as texturas, o brilho cromático das cores e a rica variação de tons quase barroca.

Aliás, essa é uma característica importante por ressaltar na produção mais recente de Helle. Em suas obras podem ser percebidos fragmentos de valores clássicos, barrocos e modernos compondo um eclético mosaico, numa interessante mescla estética. E, além disso, ele trabalha no difuso limite entre o figurativo e o abstrato.

Agora, se entendermos como características da pósmodernidade, além do redobrado avanço da tecnologia que se materializa através do vigor das mídias eletrônicas, da disseminação da automação, do espaço virtual e da comunicação instantânea, a marcante presença de atributos como a fragmentação, a colagem, a saturação, a sedução, facilmente pode-se perceber o envolvimento de Helle no universo pós-moderno.

However, if we understand abstraction as the work of the spirit, mind or a look that separates from an idea or a vision, only an element or a fragment, neglecting all others, we realize that throughtout his entire artistic career Helle has always worked with abstractions. As the artist says: “I´ve always painted by pieces, using pigments and pixels.”

From Abraços to Acqua, he was never worried about the literal representation of things. He has always had more expressive and bigger aims than the strictness of his images.

Even when he works with images, he only takes them as a starting point, worrying more with revealing colors, textures and creating an art work, rather than representing a specific context.

In the series Fragmenta, Helle seems to set himself free from any concern with what is real. He abstracts himself and his work. If it wasn´t for his gentle and peacefull way of being, we could even say in a certain way he does it radically.

Nevertheless, despite the apparent shift from figurative to total abstraction, Helle remains the same artist he has ever been; coherent with what he offers to his audience and keeping the same aesthetic concerns: textures, chromatic brightness of colors and a rich, almost baroque, variation of tons.

In fact, that is one of the most important characteristic to note in Helle´s latest production. In his work we can see fragments of classical values, baroque and modern age, composing an eclectic mosaic, an interesting aesthetics blend. And in addition to that, he works between the boundary of figurative and abstract.

If we see as characteristics of postmodernism the strong presence of features such as fragmentation, collage, saturation and seduction, besides the incredible technological breakthrough seen in the strenght of social midia, the spread of automation, virtual space and instant communication, we can easily see Helle´s involvement in the postmodern universe.

E, como acompanho o trabalho de Helle há um longo tempo, tendo visto o seu desenvolvimento, as suas aproximações com as possibilidades oferecidas pelas tecnologias disponíveis - a serigrafia, a fotocópia e, nos últimos tempos, a infogravura -, posso afirmar com segurança que Helle é, na verdade, um artista da pós-modernidade.

E, mais que isso, ele não é apenas um usuário da tecnologia disponível no seu tempo. É bem mais. Ele mergulha na tecnologia e a expande, alargando a possibilidade do seu uso artístico. Do mesmo modo que os renascentistas, quinhentos anos depois, ele inventa, usa a tecnologia de ponta para construir a sua arte. Como um cirurgião contemporâneo, que não mais traz entre seus dedos o bisturi para as suas operações mais complexas, Helle recorre a instrumentos outros para elaborar e construir as imagens que oferece ao público. Com delicadeza e precisão, ele opera as imagens transmutando-as em puras obras de arte.

Helle não é somente um artista coerente com o seu tempo.

Também é bem mais que isso. Sua obra, efetivamente, contém tudo que poderia ser sintoma da pós-modernidade porque, além de ser um artista pós-moderno, ele participa da construção do seu tempo. Helle é o seu tempo.

And, because I have been following Helle´s work for a long time, have been watching his development, his approach to the possibilities offered by the available technology, seen in silkscreen printing, photocopying and, in recent times, digital art, I can safely say that Helle is actually a postmodern artist.

Furthermore, he is not just a user of the technology available today. He does much more than that. He dives into the technology and expands it, widening the possibilities of artistic usage. Like a Renascence artist five hundred years later, he invents and uses the latest technology to build his art. As a contemporary surgeon, who brings nothing more than the scalpel between his fingers to the most complex operations, Helle makes uses of other tools to design and create the images that he presents to his audience. With finesse and accuracy, he operates his images transmuting them into a pure work of art.

Helle is not only an artist consistent with his time. He has gone beyond that. His work, effectively, includes all symptoms that are conected to the postmodernism and in addition of being a postmodern artist, Helle actively participates in the construction of his time. Helle is his time.

De que está constituída a arte? Quais são os materiais que a definem? Não há material que avalize uma criação como artística, pelo menos é a visão que vem, faz cem anos, consolidando-se. Pode-se trabalhar com pintura, escultura ou qualquer outra técnica convencional e não se fazer arte.

Pode-se trabalhar com lençóis de motel, com graxa ou com espelhos e ter-se um excelente trabalho artístico. Se bem, parece ocioso indicar que o contrário também pode ser certo: assistimos a experimentalismos vazios e a artistas que trabalham com materiais tradicionais e realizam um trabalho de clara densidade artística. Creio que a arte não deve ser de uma maneira determinada. Será como queira ser e não evoluirá por onde marque a crítica mais ou menos especializada, nunca o fez. Os dogmatismos nascem enfermos e envelhecem mal.

Uma das ferramentas que, especialmente em arte, mais atração e rechaço produzem é o computador. Desde o início, admitia-se sua potencialidade, mas... sempre havia um mas. Podiam concordar com Ortega y Gasset em A Desumanização da Arte se bem que, posteriormente, esse mesmo argumento era utilizado pelos que eram refratários a seu uso. Uma suspeita ilusa de autossuficiência dos equipamentos informáticos fazia com que compradores e inclusive críticos preferissem a obra sobre moldes mais tradicionais. As reservas à suposta capacidade de criação

By Pablo Manye Of what is art made? Which are the materials that defines it? There is no material that endorses a creation as artistic.

At least is what the common sense has been consolidating for the past one hundred years. One can work with painting, sculpture or any other conventional technique without creating art. One can work with cheap hotel sheets, grease or mirrors and create an excellent artwork. Although it seems futile to indicate that the opposite can also be true; we have been watching pointless experiments and also artists who work with traditional materials and are able to create artworks full of artistic density. I believe art shouldn’t be described in one specific way. It will be the way you want it to be and will not evolve based on what a more or less specialized critic says. It never did. Dogmas are born ill and age badly.

One of the tools that will generate more attraction and repulsion, especially in art, is the computer. Its potential has been accepted since the beginning, but there was always a but. They would agree with Ortega y Gasset in “A Desumanização da Arte”, but later on, the same argument was used by those who were against its use. A wrong assumption of self-sufficiency of computers meant that buyers and even critics would prefer artworks made by more traditionals methods. Reservations about the alleged creation capacity of computers were replaced by the daily use of digital resources in our life. It seems now that everyone can be a photographer and anyone can manipulate images effectively. The maturity we see in the photography world is now reaching the computer world.

própria da informática vieram a ser substituídas pela cotidianidade dos recursos digitais em nossa vida. Parece que qualquer um é fotógrafo e qualquer um manipula imagens de forma eficaz. A maturidade que podemos ver nesse sentido no âmbito fotográfico parece que está chegando ao que se refere ao computador.

Uma das características que ingenuamente usam para desvalorizar a infogravura é a possibilidade infinita de realizar cópias. O que parece que não se tem em conta é que, com outros meios, as possibilidades de multiplicação são similares. Por isso mesmo, como em toda obra seriada, o artista numera e assina cada impressão. Isso é o que verdadeiramente dá garantia a um comprador de que está adquirindo uma obra original e seriada de valores assentes no mercado local, nacional ou internacional, dependendo do âmbito em que o artista trabalhe. Dizemos que a obra é original, já que quando um artista trabalha uma madeira para convertê-la em xilogravura, não está pensando nela como seu trabalho final – sua “obra original” será a impressão sobre um suporte. Da mesma maneira, quando Sérgio Helle trabalha com seu computador, o que vê em sua tela ou em sua mesa digitalizadora é parte de seu processo de alcançar sua obra final, a obra original. Em definitivo, para o mercado vale o desejo de posse vinculado à relação da oferta e demanda. Podemos até sair do âmbito artístico para comprovar isso isso quando vemos um selo único, uma carta manuscrita por alguém que alcançou algum tipo de notoriedade, ou qualquer outra coisa que suponha uma raridade.

Tive a fortuna de ser o curador da XVI Unifor Plástica. Foi sem dúvida muito disputada. Isso se confirma por ter sido a edição com mais inscrições tanto de artistas, quanto de obras, em toda sua longa história como referência no Ceará. Nestas circunstâncias, Sérgio Helle foi premiado com uma viagem à Bienal de Veneza. Um prêmio para submergir-se na cidade de água, na qual a arte clássica e

One of the characteristics that is naively used to devalue digital art is the infinite possibility of copying. What is not been taking into account is that with other methods the possibility of copying are similar. That is why in all original artwork the artist signs and numbers each of his work. This is what truly gives assurance to a buyer that he is aquiring an original art work in the local, national or international market, depending on where the artist is from. We say that the artwork is original, because when an artist engraves a piece of wood to make a xilographic artwork, he is not considering it his final work. His “original artwork” is going to be printed on another surface. Likewise, when Sérgio Helle is working with his computer, what he sees on the screen is only part of the process to create his work, his original artwork. To the market, what really matters is how desired that artwork is and how it fares in the relation of supply and demand. We can see that outside the artistic market, for instance in an unique stamp, or a handwritten letter by somneone who has achieved some sort of notoriety or anything else that can be considered an rare artifact.

I had the privilege of being the XVI Unifor Plástica´s curator.

It was certainly a great competition. That was confirmed by the fact that it was the edition with the highest number of artists and artworks since the beginning of this event.

An event that has become reference in the state of Ceará.

Eu trabalhava em uma série chamada Dobras Moles, em que explorava os contornos, formas e sombras de tecidos. Gostava da organicidade de suas formas, mas queria mais. Achei que a água, com suas “lentes e reflexos” poderia enriquecer o trabalho.

Também queria voltar a pintar a figura humana. Selecionei tecidos, que enviei para uma costureira fazer algumas colchas de retalhos, e convidei uma amiga, a Nívea Jorge, para posar imersa com as colchas em uma piscina. Assim nasceu Acqua. De início eram 21 pinturas e 4 infogravuras, que compuseram uma exposição na Galeria Mariana Furlani em Fortaleza, em outubro de 2010. Mas a série ainda tinha muito a dizer e é essa série de infogravuras, quase todas realizadas após essa exposição, que apresento aqui.

I was working on a series called Dobras Moles, in which I was exploring the boundaries, shapes and shadows of fabrics. I liked the differences of their shapes, but I wanted more. I thought water with its lens and reflexes could enrich my work. And I also wanted to start painting human figures again. I selected fabrics, invited a seamstress to make some patchwork quilts and invited a friend, Nívea Jorge, to pose with the quilts immersed in a pool. That is how Aqcua was born. From the beginning there were 21 images and 4 digital art images, which composed on October of 2010 an exhibit at Galeria Mariana Furlani in Fortaleza. But the series still had a lot to show. It is this series and almost all others after that exhibit that I will present here.

Sempre pintei “aos pedaços”, com pigmentos ou pixels.

Pequenas áreas do trabalho eram pensadas quase como trabalhos individuais, que juntos formavam um todo. Talvez por isso as imagens de colchas de retalhos sempre estiveram presentes em fases tão distintas.

Fragmenta é a procura dessas semelhanças e um diálogo entre meus diversos trabalhos. Um grande mosaico, comos os patchworks de tapetes persas do Marché aux Puces StOuen. Cenas recombinadas e reeditadas em outra sequência, contando novas histórias de um mesmo personagem.

O processo de criação das infogravuras deixava muitas vezes um rico material pelo caminho. O trabalho criado no computador nem sempre se revelava o esperado quando impresso em grandes formatos, o que exigia novas intervenções, ajustes e mudanças no arquivo original. As telas eram novamente impressas e as que tinham sido descartadas eram guardadas.

Sempre pensei em utilizar esse material em algum outro trabalho.

Fragmenta nasceu assim. Decidi cortar essas telas em fatias e recombiná-las, colando em painéis de madeira. No decorrer do processo, fui percebendo limitações. Quando, por exemplo, precisava de uma determinada cor para compor esse novo trabalho muitas vezes não dispunha nesse material guardado.

Guiado por essa insatisfação, decidi fazer experiências direto no computador, utilizando um vasto material: meus trabalhos anteriores.

As experiências das composições no computador foram ficando cada vez mais sedutoras. Nada mais intenso do que beber na própria fonte, uma relação antropofágica, em que se descobrem novos caminhos, navegando em territórios que se pensava conhecer de cor.

I have always painted by pieces with pigments and pixels. Each part of the work was thought almost like a single artwork that together created a single artwork. Maybe that is why patchwork quilts images were always present in different phases of my life.

Fragmenta is the search for these similarities and a communication route between my various works. A big mosaic, like those we see in the patchwork of Persians carpet at Marchéau Puces St-Ouen. They are recombined and edited scenes in another sequence that are telling us new stories of the same character.

Digital Art’s creative process would often leave a rich material along the way. The work created on the computer is not always what we were expecting when we print it in a larger format. Because of that, interventions, adjustments and changes in the original file sometimes are required. Then, the images were printed again and the images that had been were rejected were put away. I have always thought in using those materials in other works.

Fragmenta was born this way. I decided to cut those images in pieces and recombine them, putting them in wood panels. During the process, I realized that there were limitations. For instance, I would need a specific color to compose my new work, and many times I wouldn’t have that material stored. Motivated by this problem, I decided to make experiments directly on the computer using a vast material I had at my disposal: my previous works.

Those experiences I was creating on the computer started to get more and more seductive. Nothing is more intense than feeding of you own mind. It’s an intense relationship with yourself, where you can discover new paths, sailing through territories that you thought you knew with the palm of your hand.

Sérgio Helle lives and works in Fortaleza, the capital city of Ceará. He develops an artwork that combines the use of the newest digital technologies and traditional techniques of drawing and painting. With a 25-year career, Helle was one of the first artists from Ceará to use a computer as a artistic resource to assist him in his creative process.
