The history of Brazil's petrochemical industry began in the early 50's, when Intense dennand emerged for a new product: plastics, Amid this development and modernization period, consumption grew rapidly, signaling the need to create a national Industry capable of meeting this demand. Until then, the country had met its needs through imports. Currently, the main petrochemical complexes, which

are integrated with the feedstock cracking units, are: Capuava In Säo Paulo, Camagari in Bahia, Triunfo In Rio Grande do Sul and Duque de Caxlas In Rio de Janeiro. Capuava, the first complex established in Brazil, started operations in 1972. The project was funded by private capital from a Säo Paulo business group (Uniäo), in partnership with the government and with the participation of foreign capital, which came to be known as the “Tripartite” model.

Brief History of the Petrochemical Complexes in Brazil Capuava Complex (Säo Paulo state)

Camagari Complex (Bahia state)

The government's investment was made through Petroquisa, a Petrobras subsidiary for the Petrochemical Industry, while the foreign capital was important for providing the required technology. Today the complex comprises producers of petrochemical products used to make thermoplastic resins, rubbers, paints and other products. The complex has ethylene production capadty of 700 kton.

The Carnagari Complex, Brazil’s first planned petrochemical complex, started its operations in 1978, and also adopted the“Tripartite” funding model. The complex is composed of producers of petrochemicalproducts used to make thermoplastic resins, fertilizers and copper metallurgy, as well as other applications,The petrochemical complex has ethylene production capacity of 1,280 kton.

Duque de Caxias Complex (Rio J. state)

Triunfo Complex (Rio Grande S.state)

Brazll’s first integrated gas-chemical complex was bullt In Duq ue de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro,Operations started up In 2005, and the gas cracking unit has annual ethylene production capacity of 520 kton.

After the complex in the state of Bahla, this was the third naphtha-based petrochemical complex bullt in Brazil in the 70s.The Triunfo complex cracker-Copesul (today Braskem) started operations in 1982.Today the Trlunfo Complex has annual ethylene production capacity of 1,452 kton.

Overview of the Brazilian Petrochemical Industry

The petrochemical chain is divided into first, second and third generation producers, based on the manufacturing phase of the various petrochemical raw materials or inputs. The chain represents the transformation of sub-products obtained from the refining of crude 011, primarily naphtha or natural gas, into consumer or industrial products used for a variety of purposes. The main raw material used in Brazil’s petrochemical chain is naphtha, followed by natural gas, Petrobras Is the only producer of naphtha and natural gas

in Brazll, meeting domestic demand through its own productlon as well as Innports. Petrobras monopoly was broken In 2002, and since then local petrochemical complexes have begun to importthese products directly to meet their. The naphtha and/or gas undergo a process called cracking, which results in the basic petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene and aromatics. The type of feedstock (i.e., raw material) used results In various different yields and product mixes.

First Generation Producers

Second Generation Producers

In Brazil, first generation producers, known as “crackers”, fracture or “crack” the naphtha (a byproduct of the 011 refining process) or natural gas, the two maln feedstocks used, transforming them Into basic petrochemicals, The crackers buy their naphtha mainly from Petrobras, but also from forelgn suppliers. Crackers using natural gas as feedstock are supplied exclusively by Petrobras,The basic petrochemicals produced by naphtha cracking units include: olefins, mainly ethylene, propylene and butadiene; and aromatics, such as benzene, toluene and xylenes. With the acquisition of Quattor, Braskem became the only Brazilian company of first generation, which operate four cracking units and sell basic petrochemicals to second generation producers, promoting the integration of the chain, Basic petrochemicals. which have gaseous or liquid forms, are transported through pipelines to second generation producers,Which in general are located near cracking units, where they undergo additional processing.

Second generation producers process the basic petrochemicals purchased from naphtha cracking units to make intermediate petrochemical products, which include:polyethylene, polystyrene and EDC/PVC (made from ethylene); polypropylene and acrylonitrile (made from propylene); cumene and ethylbenzene (made from benzene): and polybutadlene (made from butadiene).Intermediate petrochennicals are produced in solid forms in pallets or in powdered form and are usually transported by truck to the sites of third generation producers, which generally are not located near second generation producers, Braskem is the only integrated first and second generation thermoplastic resin producer operating In Brazil.

Third Generation Pro ducers

Third generation manufacturers purchase intermediate petrochemicals from second generation producers and transform them into final products, induding: plastics (made from polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC); acrylic fibers

nylon (which in Brazil is made from phenol); elastomers (made from butadiene); and disposable packaging (made from polystyrene and polypropylene). Third generation manufacturers make a variety of consumer

and industrial products, including containers and packaging materials such as sacks, shrink wrap and bottles, fabrics, detergents, paints, auto parts, toys and consumer electronics. Brazil currently has more than 11,500 third generation manufacturers.

The Role of Petrobras

Prior to 1995, Brazil’s constitution gave the government a monopoly, exercised through Petrobras, in the research, exploration, production, refinement, Importation and transport of all crude oil and refined petroleum products (excluding petrochemicals) in Brazil. The constitution also stated that byp roducts of the refining process, such as naphtha, could only be supplied in Brazil by Petrobras or its intermediary, Naphtha is the primary feedstock used in Brazil in the production of basic petroéhemicals such as ethylene and propylene. In 1995, Brazil’s constitutlon was amended to allow 011 and oil-related activities to be exercised by private companies through concessions or licenses granted by the federal government.

Since 1995, the federal government has Implennented a number of measures to deregulate the country’s petrochemical industry. In 1997, Federal Law 9.478/97 regulated the constitutional am endment of 1995 by creating the National Energy Policy Council and the National Petroleum Agency, which were charged with regulating and overseeing the country’s petroleum and energy sectors. With the creation of the National Petroleum Agency, new rules and regulations were introduced to eliminate gradually Petrobras’ monopoly. Brazil currently depends on imports for close to a third of its nap.

Zika threat during Rio 2016 Olympics unlikely, Brazilian expert says at US event Brazil is taking steps to prevent further spread of Zika virus during the Rio 2016 Olympics, said Paulo Buss, FIOCRUZ International Coordinator for Health, speaking Wednesday (March 2) at an international meeting on the subject held by the Pan American Health Organization in Washington. Housed under Brazil's Ministry of Health, FIOCRUZ is the most prominent institute of health science and technology in Latin America. “We're assuming people and athletes will not be affected [by Zika]. We're very unlikely to see mosquito infection, not least because the health inspection authority in Rio de Janeiro has been working hard since January to prevent the mosquito population from reaching a significant proportion [by the time the Games begin] in August,” Buss told reporters from various countries. ·Foreign visitors allowed to drive in Brazil during Rio 2016 Olympics

·Rousseff: Zika outbreak does not compromise Olympics in Rio.

He pointed out that, adding to Brazil’s efforts to eliminate Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (the vector for Zika) with actions taking place on federal, state, and local levels and support from Brazil's armed forces, the cooler temperatures in August are an unfavorable condition for the proliferation of the insect, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya fever. During the meeting, speakers discussed ways to advance scientific knowledge about Zika, and how countries should brace themselves for potential outbreaks in countries not currently affected by the problem. In addition to representatives from Brazil's FIOCRUZ and Evandro Chagas Institute, the meeting was attended by scientists from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), the UK's London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, experts from Pasteur Institutes at Paris, Dakar and Cayenne, and Cuba's Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute. Also attending the meeting were researchers and experts from renowned public health research institutes and agencies in Colombia, Canada, Mexico, France, and French Polynesia.

Brazil to challenge Thailand sugar subsidies at WTO

The Foreign Trade Chamber (CAMEX) of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) has decided to challenge Thailand at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over subsidies to sugar producers. The decision was announced by the Brazilian government Tuesday (March 1st).According to the ministry, the WTO has received other complaints regarding Thailand’s subsidies before, but Thailand has not changed its practices. This has prompted CAMEX to back a claim from Brazil’s Sugar Cane Industry Union (UNICA) and file a dispute with the WTO. Representatives from the seven Brazilian ministries that make up CAMEX board have also approved the extension of anti-dumping measures to cover footwear and ferrite magnet imports from China.Antidumping measures can be enforced by a country that proves that an exporter has set prices well below market value in an importing country as an attempt to restrict competition.

Lula “outraged” by bench warrant after testifying to Federal Police

“A fireworks show” is how the former president described the work of the Federal Prosecution Office and that of Judge Sérgio Moro, who gave the PF the green light to start the operation. After being heard by the Federal Police (PF) for over three hours on Friday morning (Mar. 4), former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made a pronouncement at the PT headquarters in São Paulo, in which he criticized Brazilian courts and the press. Lula’s testimony to the police was heard as part of a bench warrant targeting him under the 24th stage of Operation Car Wash. Lula once again denied owning the seaside triplex apartment in Guarujá, São Paulo, which has been brought under judicial scrutiny by the Federal Prosecution Office and the PF. “If I haven’t bought it or payed for it, it’s not mine,” he said. “It’s an apartment that doesn’t belong to me which they say is mine. I hope they do give me the ranch and the apartment when it’s all over,” he quipped. “When I pay for it and it’s registered in my name, I can say it’s mine and I’ll be proud to do so,” he added.

The ex-president also criticized the concern of investigators over the $1,000 boat that belongs to former First Lady Marisa Letícia, and his grandchildren’s pedal boats on a ranch in Atibaia—Lula and his family’s common retreat in São Paulo. “I visit my friends’ ranch because my enemies don’t offer me any.”The former head of state said the incident served to “raise PT’s head, which had long been lowered.” “I felt like a prisoner” “A fireworks show” is how the former president described the work of the Federal Prosecution Office and that of Judge Sérgio Moro, who gave the PF the green light to start the operation. “It’s a shame that part of the judiciary system is working alongside the press.” testify to the police, and that an invitation would suffice. The ex-president

stated that democracy needs “solid institutions” and that “prosecutors should be aware that a solid institution has to have responsible professionals,” and he said: “I felt like a prisoner this morning. I’ve been to a lot over the course of my life, but I think the country shouldn’t remain frightened like this. Before lawyers know their client will be called for questioning, the press does. In the Constituent Assembly, I fought for a strong Prosecution Office. But prosecutors should know that a strong institution needs very responsible people,” he said. Lula backed the president, arguing for her autonomy. “They’re curtailing the right this woman has to rule this country.”He criticized the work of the Brazilian press outlets in covering the case by referring to it as “judgment by the media.” He said, however, he is not “upset with journalists,” but rather “with some press outlets.” And he added: “I believe I deserve some more respect in this country.”Lula ended his address speaking like a man from the Northeast: “If what they tried to do was to kill the snake, they missed the head! They hit the tail and the snake is alive and well, as it’s always been.”

Renascença Clube R

The Renascença Club is the Carioca Trench traditions of African descent and samba roots. Founded on February 17,1951 by a group of middle-class blacks who, prevented from joining clubs traditionally frequented by white families, decidedto create an association where black families could gather and enjoy a harmonious social and cultural exchange. The group was led by lawyers Oscar de Paula Assis, Jandira de Paula Assis, the trader Domingos Soares and Idalina de Jesus Soares, by doctors brothers Humberto Gomes de Oliveira and Diva Santos de Oliveira, and Enedina Rodrigues da Silva. The Renascença Club was born in an old, small house with large wooded backyard in Pedro de Carvalho Street in the neighborhood Meier, North Zone of Rio The fleur-de-lys, heraldic ornament in the shape of a stylized lily, the symbol was chosen by the founding group to represent the club. Throughout its existence, the Rena, as affectionately came to be identified was always concerned with the condition of black in our society. Therefore, it has established itself as the place in which afrodescentes entered through the front door, resisting the ethnic intolerance already perceived at that time. From a cultural standpoint, the Rena has been characterized as an pioneer association of leading edge, and revealed many african-Brazilian artistic personalities, among many other fields. y 1958, the club is transferred to the Rua Barao de Sao Francisco, in Andaraí neighborhood in the North Zone which until today remains headquartered,

resisting, valuing and restoring the African Brazilian Culture.

Valuing family Family was always the the attention epicenter for its founders. It was there that the representatives met people of the same cultural level for the purpose of friendship or marriage. Another sign of modernity of the Club was the feminine presence. Women were assigned to prominent roles on the board of directors. Out of 29 charter members 18 were women. The cultural activities of the early days demonstrated high cultural standard with lectures and musical activities presenting conductors and classical musicians With the

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil passage of time and the increasing number of members and attenders, the Club also began promote grand balls attended.Men with formal attire and women dressed in silks, satins and lace, gloves and hats. Moving to the Andaraí (Rua Barao de Sao Francisco, 54), a series of changes in the composition and activities of the club took place. The Renascença started accepeting the South Zone of the city with concerts and samba circles. Often these newcomers became members, which displease the traditionalists, who saw these new facts as “excessive opening” contrary to the original proposal of the members, arousing a lot of criticism. The period is also marked by a large projection of the club in the media and by its inclusion in the local fashion circuit. Black Beauty Keeping its tradition of breaking taboos and prejudices, the Renaissance stood out in the 50s and 60s, in beauty contests. For that substantially contributed to the success of the Renascença Club representatives in beautypageants (Miss Guanabara,Miss Brazil, Miss Universe), events fairly valued at the time. Thanks to the success Brack Miss in these contests, the Renascença become known- and also recognized for its own members - as the “Club of the mulatto.” This was (and remains) the subject of conflicting reviews. The climactic election Vera Lúcia Couto in 1964 as Miss Guanabara, was seen by many, if not most of the shareholders, as a victory of blackness nearly a memorable result of the collective effort of the group.

nhos Sathan is considered one of the biggest Brazilian Samba singers.

Among the winners stand out Dirce Machado (1959), Aizita Birth (1963) and Vera Lúcia Couto dos Santos (Miss Guanabara, 2nd place in Miss Brazil and 3rd place in the Miss International Beauty, which earned him the title of Miss Photogenic , 1964) In the evaluation of researchers on the history of the club, at that moment, however, a part of the old leaders, unhappy with the direction the club was taking, withdraws in protest. When the Renaissance embodies the same ideas that whites traditionally associate with the mulatto, they thought, the club passes somewhat to join the common vision of the place and role of blacks in society and national culture.

Count, Francesco Antonio Maria Matarazzo Biography

He was born in Castellabate, a small village in the south of Italy, the son of Costabile Matarazzo e Mariangela Jovane, who were farmers in the Campania region. In 1881, at 27, Francesco emigrated to the (then) Empire of Brazil in search of better living conditions. When he arrived, he lost a container of lard he was carrying. With the little money he had, he went to Sorocaba, a province of São Paulo.and stablishes himself in the grocery business. Years later, he starts a pork lard industry.

Personality of the Month Dr. Sady T. Ribeiro MD My story

Sergio Lima has asked me and I wanted to say no, but it is very hard not to say yes to him. Why? I do not know. He wants me to write something about my self to be published in his magazine, and I am sitting here wondering who in the world would be interested in my insignificant existence. I was born in the countryside of Minas Gerais, in a small village where there were five houses, one church, and a big soccer field. At that time, the Catholic Church did not have any competition from the Evangelicals.

I do not why, but the Fluminense became my passion, and in 1958, when I was listening to the radio call out the names of soccer players on our national team, I could not understand how Valdo was not in the list and Castilho would be Gilmar’s substitute.I tried playing several positions and ended up playing left forward after I had read in a magazine about Canhoteiro, the “left Garrincha. When black-andwhite television was introduced, I started watching the Palmeiras, the Football Academy, and found out that watching Ademir da Guia playing on Sundays was better than going to the movies. (Years later, I would have the same feeling with Reinaldo.)

Time passed quickly, and I realized that my chance in this sport was next to nothing. There was a mathematics teacher whom I hated, but there was also a female teacher of biology who had beautiful legs, and I started becoming interested in her classes and thought of becoming a physicia. The study of medicine brought me social consciousness, and little by little I started seeing myself on the left in politics. When the PT was born, I was there, believing that we were making history. Brazil was losing to Italy (I still cry when I see this game on YouTube) and I was in the streets of Sao Paulo urging people to vote for Lula for governor of the state. Good times. There was hope and dreams. One day, after I had become a physician, quite well trained, w I went with my daughter to a bar and asked for a beer and a coke, I realized that I did not have money to pay for both. The next day, I started studying for the medical examination that would allow me to come to the USA. Once in the USA, I ended up becoming what is called an interventional pain specialist. I think I am relatively well trained in this field, although I may be wrong. Currently living in New York City, I sometimes lie to Americans, saying that I was the second Canhoteiro in Brazilian soccer. For some years,I lived in Houston, where I met Sergio Lima and used to go to Emporio Brasil. I miss that. Time is passing very fast. I have now a dog that gives me unconditional love. My girlfriend tells me that I cannot have more than two glasses of wine; otherwise I sleep and forget that I took one Viagra. When life is boring I watch Fluminennse or Palmeiras playing on YouTube. Yesterday, I saw Palmerias beat Santos 2:1 in 1959.

Water from dam may explain tremors in Ceará backlands Two consecutive tremors, felt in the towns of Solonópole and Jaguaribe—about 300 km away from Fortaleza, may have been caused by water infiltration from a weir in the region. Francisco das Chagas Brandão Melo, head of the Civil Defense Seismology Center in Ceará, said that earthquakes like these are not uncommon in this area of Ceará backlands. Although there is no explanation for the tremors in Solonópole and Jaguaribe, some events may be explained by the so-called induced seismicity, considered human-caused earthquakes. One of them may be linked to Castanhão dam, built between 1995 and 2003 and considered the largest multi-purpose public dam in Brazil. “Water from the dam infiltrated the land, passed through geological faults and acted as lubricant to the rocks. This ends up causing induced earthquakes.” explained Brandão. Castanhão dam’s total capacity is 6.7 billion cubic meters. Earthquakes happened Sunday afternoon (Mar. 6) and came as a shock to local residents. The first had magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale and the second of 3.4. The information is collected by the Seismological Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (LabSis / UFRN).

Naná rose to national prominence after he moved to Rio de Janeiro in the 1960’s and played with Minas Gerais’s Milton Nascimento and fellow Pernambuco musician Geraldo Azevedo. He then made a career abroad, living in the United States and in France, writing film soundtracks and winning eight Grammy Awards. King and Ella Fitzgerald.Having learned all his musical skills informally—he never went to college—he was awarded a doctor honoris causa degree from the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) in December 2015.

Investing your way to a Green Card 2 Paths to Achieving Permanent Residency through Financial Investment in the United States. While there are many ways to invest in the United States that can lead to possible permanent residency in the future. The EB-5 visa allows individuals to obtain permanent residency immediately upon entry in to the United States. The EB-5 visa provides two specific paths through investment that an individual can take to achieve Permanent Residency (Green Card). However, prior to speaking about the two ways it is important to state the necessary requirement, regardless of the type of future investment chosen. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) states that entrepreneurs who wish to make an investment in a commercial enterprise must invest $1,000,000 in a new venture or at least $500,000 in a rural area or area with high unemployment. This is where the similarities between the two paths of investment end. Like many countries, the United States wants to facility wealthy individuals who desire to invest in the country and create jobs.

The second option allows the obtaining of permanent residency through direct investment. As previously mentioned, the investment must be a minimum of $1,000,000 in creating a new business or restructuring an existing business or expanding on one that already exists. This initial investment can be reduced to $500,000 if that business is located in a rural area or urban area with high unemployment. Furthermore, the business must ultimately employ ten full-time employees (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or other immigrants authorized to work in the U.S.) that either produce a service or product. If the investment is intended to restructure or expand an existing business, the business must maintain the number of full-time employees pre-investment for a period of two years. In closing, the EB-5 visa provides two very interesting possibilities for wealthy individuals to obtain permanent residency.

Therefore, the EB-5 visa permits two distinct paths of investment. The first option, and most common, is through what is called a “Regional Center”. A regional center is an organization or agency, which has been approved by USCIS, to promote economic growth in a specific geographic area within the United States.1 The regional center allows investors to make the required investment of $500,000, instead of the $1,000,000 that otherwise would be required. Additionally, the regional center is attractive to potential investors because of the “hands off” approach it provides. Individuals considering investing in the United States, but do not want the risk of creating their own business should strongly consider this option.

For those individuals with a strong entrepreneurial spirit there is the direct investment option and those who chose a more passive approach, the regional center. Whichever path is right for you, it is very important to seek out the services of a qualified immigration attorney. The EB-5 visa is extremely difficult to establish eligibility and certainly the most expensive. Therefore, paying for professional advice is well worth the time and money. Michael Schwarz.
