The room + garden is a place of meditation. A place that takes it all in - the surrounding sounds, view, breeze.

A series of walls rise from the ground, making a formed space which guides one through walkways into smaller courtyards and finally into the room. The room is where one might stop and bask in the serenity (and sometimes bustle) of nature and surrounding life. A minimal structure stands to feel as immersive as possible whilst still feeling one protected.

HOTEL | DOWNTOWN BLACKSBURG

Designing a hotel in downtown Blacksburg raises a question of how to sew itself into the existing urban fabric. How to complement a place - to fit in or to stand out to give the precedents cohesion?

This design is a light, sail-like residential space floating on a solid, masonry plinth that mimics its neighbors yet supports the structure that announces itself brightly as a break in the normalcy.
