Welcome to S&ERFC’s match-day programme, now produced in digital format.
The warmest of welcomes from S&ERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league.
The 2025-26 season brings a range of fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane.
Last season was particularly enjoyable with plenty of very closely-contested matches for the men’s 1st XV. Ultimately, they finished in a creditable fourth place, with the women’s 1st XV finishing eighth in Championship South 1. At our level, league rugby is highly competitive, and is bound to become more so as the season progresses.
The Minis and Juniors section, both male and female, continue to thrive. The legacy of Jamie Paxton, whose vision and foresight led to the founding of this section, is there to be marvelled at every Sunday, and the vibrancy and enthusiasm these young players (and their parents!) generate gives the Club a real ‘buzz’.
We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all.
No club of our size and status could survive in the modern age without the support of sponsors. Some of our sponsors are represented by advertisements in this programme. Foremost amongst them is our headline sponsor: MB Associates, the company whose Managing Director is the redoubtable Monica Bradley. The Club is very grateful to all its sponsors for their continuing support – and I take the opportunity to remind all members that sponsorship is a two-way street: the more business Club members give to our sponsors (often on advantageous terms), the more that entrenches the relationship between the sponsors and the Club – to the advantage of both.
So, welcome once again. Let season 2025-26 be a season to remember at S&ERFC – for all the right reasons!

The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing.
And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England.
The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers.
By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season.
Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years.
We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”

It was a very emotional Friday evening at Balmoral Avenue for the inaugural match for the McMillan Murray Memorial Cup. The trophy was established to honour two beloved members who departed far too young in tragic circumstances. Graham Murray of Beckenham RFC lost his life as the result of a road traffic accident. Brendan McMillan of Old Colfeians, along with his father Terry, were murdered in a stabbing incident last July. Tries from Captain Andy O’Malley, Ethan Collins and Jed Wylie and seven points from the boot of Ollie Burkett saw the visitors home. However, it was their sterling defence that won the day as Beckenham turned down several kickable penalties in search of a win.
In the desperate search for positives, after another humbling experience, there was the fact that Old Reigatian scored the most points that they have recorded this season. Almost inevitably the 61 points that the Ironsides scored was also a season’s best for them.
Tenth-placed Bromley secured a valuable win against their neighbours in ninth. The Pilgrims were basking in the glow of their fine start to 2026 when they toppled the leaders Brighton. The hosts were outscored in the first half by three tries to three penalties as Bromley led 19-9 at the break. A fourth penalty success for Hewitt and their first try saw Canterbury level the game at 19-19. Their second try had the Pilgrims thinking they had gained another come from behind win at the MTG. Then Bromley scored in the corner with the final play of the game. For good measure they converted from touch for a 29-26 win.
Smarting from back-to-back defeats Brighton were looking to bounce back at the Rectory Field. Gravesend’s stubborn resistance in the first half was overcome with a late try. In the second period the hosts could not take advantage of a yellow card and Brighton extended their lead to 24-3. The Kent team dug deep and were rewarded with tries from Ben Hope and Samraj Chahal to finish 13-24, a score that was a fairer reflection of the contest.
The Green & Whites fine recent form continued with a thumping win over struggling Dartfordians. The hosts led via goals from Tom Sanders, Archie Fox and Tom Whittaker that appeared to put them on course for a comfortable win. However, the visitors hit back before the break as Messrs Wright, Fofanah & Hooban crossed the whitewash as they turned around trailing 17-21 at the interval. The Sussex team were inspired in the second half scoring six tries without reply. Tom Sanders took the personal glory with a hat trick as Horsham Head of Rugby Nick Stocker reflected on the 5-point win: “… 8 tries were scored by the backs today showing the balance in the way we like to approach our play with forwards providing possession for the backs to use well.”
Although the present Gravesend club was formed in 1921, we also had one game with the original Gravesend club, Sutton winning 10-0 at Western Road in January 1889 and the match report appears later in the programme. Then there was a solitary friendly in 1994 with a victory for Sutton & Epsom before our two clubs met for the first time in league competition. Those first encounters were in Gravesend’s glorious title-winning season of 2013-14 when they completed a comfortable double over the Black & Whites. The last two campaigns in Regional 2 South East created four close encounters of the rugby kind with the defeated team having the consolation of at least one bonus point.
It was a fixture marked by absenteeism, unacceptable to previous generations, but the norm at this level of club rugby in the modern era. Sutton endured six players from the Sidcup squad being absent without leave. Gravesend had their own issues as they were without their talented trio of George Bruce, Ben Kite and Ned Warren who were on their injured list.
Sutton opened the scoring in a familiar fashion: penalty 40 metres out; kicked to the corner; lineout secured; forwards thwarted; sent wide & winger scores. It was Finlay Scott who waltzed in unopposed & Gareth O’Brien, taking over the kicking duties, impressively converted for 7-0. The next score came from a Gravesend handling error as a ruthless Adam Bibby hacked the ball forward, recovered it and scored for 12-0. Gravesend made a swift riposte when lock Josh Mackenzie forced his way over from close-range. With the interval approaching it was a case of hope springs eternal for the home team. Centre Ben Hope chose the perfect attacking line to make the initial break on halfway, then accelerating and evading the cover he left flailing tacklers in his wake for a stunning solo score. Rhys Betts nonchalantly added the extras and Gravesend were level at 12-12. Unfortunately for the Rectory Field supporters there was time for the irrepressible Sam Lennie to take Sutton into the break with a 19-12 lead.
The first period had been an even affair with Sutton having more of the territory and possession but both sides had shown both in attack and defence that the result was far from obvious. Added to the equation was S&E’s bizarre statistic for this season that they had yet to win a second half in their previous five outings. The hosts failed to capitalise on a second half yellow card as stubborn Sutton defence frustrated the Kent team. S&E added to their score via an O’Brien penalty and secured the bonus point in the burning embers of the game courtesy of Rob Hegarty. With results around the league being most favourable to Sutton & Epsom the win propelled them to the summit of the table… the Good Old Days.
The first time Sutton played a club called Gravesend was January 1889 It was in the era when the local press enthusiastically reported every match and added editorial comment under the ‘Sporting Musings’ section that appeared to have no filter on in its praise and criticism in rather more straight-talking times than we live in today. It includes a tactical reflection on the loss by 4-3 the previous week to Norwood.
The clubs met for the first time on Saturday at St James’ road, Sutton, when, it being a fine afternoon, there was a pretty large attendance of spectators. The home club was well represented, and the fifteen played so well together that the visitors were completely outmatched from the commencement of the game until its conclusion. Gravesend kicked off with a dribbling kick which gained them a few yards, but after a few minutes’ play the leather was worked up into their territory and passed to Lewis, who by a splendid run, got behind but was caught whilst endeavouring to get near the goal, and lost the ensuing maul. Shortly afterwards, the play being still near the visitors’ goal, Town dropped a goal from the field, and before half-time still another point was added by Watson, the attempt at goal being, however, a failure. Change of ends saw Sutton leading by one goal and one try to nil, and they forced the game so much in the second half, that the visitors were completely pumped out, and they were able to add one goal and three more tries to their score, thus making it two goals, four tries, and several minors, when play ceased, to nil. The tries were obtained by Bacon, Town, Watson and Halford, the goal being kicked by Bacon. All the members of the home team played well, and the combination was so good that scarcely a mistake was made during the afternoon. The forwards kept well on the ball, but some of them would be more useful if they could tackle better. For Gravesend, Baker, who was put three-quarter back, a position in which he has had little or no experience, played well.
Sutton: V. Morten, back: G.A. Bacon, H. Morten, Town and Lewis, three-quarters; H. St J. Fraser, G.F. Warden, J. Watson, half; J.H. Jacques, T. Poole, J.C. Halford, A. Watson, C. Cooke, and A. Davis, forwards.
Sutton had a very easy time of it on Saturday, and succeeded in defeating Gravesend by two goals, four tries, and numerous touches down to nil. I had heard some rather good accounts of the visitors, and expected them to make a much better show than they did. From first to last they were completely overmatched, and recognised the fact so fully that after the match one of them was heard to remark that they need not have come so far to get so well beaten.
Though Sutton had a good fifteen in the field it was not quite the best they can get together. Hooper was missing at back, and Craze and Fairless were minus amongst the forwards, but, nevertheless, the men played a sterling good game and thoroughly deserved their victory. The passing when near Gravesend’s goal, towards the end of the game was a treat, and the visitors seemed to be unable to make anything of it. No sooner did they collar a man than the ball was under the arm of some one else, and so the game went on merrily for a minute or two. There was not, however, sufficient passing to the open, and players would do well to remember that it is no use throwing the ball unless it is to someone better situated than they are for getting away with it.
Forwards again played well together, but there is still room for a little improvement in the matter of following up. Their dribbling was a distinctive feature of the game, and I am pleased to see that they have made so much improvement in this department. I think, however, it would be for the benefit of the club if some of them would recognise, that when near their opponent’s goal, they should walk over the ball and give their backs a chance either to drop a goal or run in. It did not matter, as it happened on Saturday, but in the match against Norwood the observance of this rule might have turned a loss into a victory. What a pity it is that the Norwood match was not won. I wish another could be arranged, but as the card is full up to the beginning of April I suppose there is no chance of that.

MAGPIES GOLF SOCIETY CAPTAIN
Felix Symonds magpiesgolfsociety@gmail.com 07976 062567
The Magpies are Sutton & Epsom RFC’s very own Golfing Society and all club members automatically qualify as members. You don’t need any particular high level of golfing skill although a sense of humour and ability to ‘lunch’ well will help!
Come and join players, past and present, and enjoy your fantastically entertaining Golf Society – a warm welcome is assured. We have four meetings a year including the legendary Christmas meeting and Captain’s Away Day.
For further information contact:
Felix Symonds (Captain) 07976 062567 magpiesgolfsociety@gmail.com
We are always looking for new business partners with whom we can build relationships for long-term mutual benefit.
In return, we can offer our sponsors a range of benefits, including opportunities to promote their business and their products, to generate direct sales via club membership and to entertain their clients, both at the club and at Twickenham.
We have a range of packages available to suit all budgets and objectives. For an initial discussion, without obligation, please contact:

The S&ERFC 200 Club provides additional fundraising for the club while affording members an opportunity to win one of 17 cash prizes in the course of a year. And yes, it is possible for one person to win all 17 draws – totalling £2,600!
Sign up at: sande200club@gmail.com with your full name and membership number.

It is always happy hour for members of Sutton & Epsom RFC at their local wine bar. Please present your membership card for 10% off your bill.
