Welcome to S&ERFC’s match-day programme, now produced in digital format.
The warmest of welcomes from S&ERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league.
The 2025-26 season brings a range of fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane.
Last season was particularly enjoyable with plenty of very closely-contested matches for the men’s 1st XV. Ultimately, they finished in a creditable fourth place, with the women’s 1st XV finishing eighth in Championship South 1. At our level, league rugby is highly competitive, and is bound to become more so as the season progresses.
The Minis and Juniors section, both male and female, continue to thrive. The legacy of Jamie Paxton, whose vision and foresight led to the founding of this section, is there to be marvelled at every Sunday, and the vibrancy and enthusiasm these young players (and their parents!) generate gives the Club a real ‘buzz’.
We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all.
No club of our size and status could survive in the modern age without the support of sponsors. Some of our sponsors are represented by advertisements in this programme. Foremost amongst them is our headline sponsor: MB Associates, the company whose Managing Director is the redoubtable Monica Bradley. The Club is very grateful to all its sponsors for their continuing support – and I take the opportunity to remind all members that sponsorship is a two-way street: the more business Club members give to our sponsors (often on advantageous terms), the more that entrenches the relationship between the sponsors and the Club – to the advantage of both.
So, welcome once again. Let season 2025-26 be a season to remember at S&ERFC – for all the right reasons!

The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing.
And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England.
The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers.
By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season.
Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years.
We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”

Sutton & Epsom playing against Battersea Ironsides may be in its league infancy but already this fixture has supplied supporters with five excellent and keenly contested matches.

This fixture certainly maintained the reputation for close encounters of the rugby kind and drama until the final whistle. The Black & Whites arrived at Garrett Green full of confidence riding high with six wins from seven starts. The Ironsides had had a rather subdued start to their campaign with four losses already. To put that into context their fourth defeat of the last campaign was on the 7th December when Medway, the future champions, defeated them 22-21 in the 15th game of the season at Priestfields. What ensued was hard to believe even with the passage of time.
The opening quarter hinted that all might not be well with the crew of the good ship Sutton & Epsom as passes were dropped, penalties conceded and referee Harry Hopkins appeared to have taken a instant dislike to S&E to save time. After ten minutes the hosts took the lead as Matt Bell crossed the whitewash for his first try of the afternoon. Cameron Baker started his perfect kicking afternoon with an impressive conversion from the flank to give the Ironsides a 7-0 lead. Eventually the Black & Whites found their mojo and produced their try of the season as Josh Rea sidestepped past the cover and strode home after a magnificent build up. Freddy Bunting levelled the scores with his conversion for 7-7. Then a catch and drive try from hooker Sam Lennie gave Sutton a 12-7 lead at the break.
Kyren Ghumra scored in the corner to extend the lead and early concerns seemed to have dissipated as the visitors led 17-7. Fortune also appeared to be favouring the Rugby Lane men as a Battersea try was expunged because the scorer stepped beyond the parameters of play as he rounded to score under the posts. Sam Lennie with a robust run added his second score and at 22-7 with 15 minutes left on the clock all appeared rosy in the Sutton camp. As the game began to meander towards the inevitable the Ironsides initiated a remarkable recovery in a magnificent seven minutes. Hope and inspiration was provided by winger Will Ford whose fine finish to a sweeping move was improved by a clinical conversion from the extremities by Cameron Baker. A couple of minutes later Matt Bell secured his second score of the afternoon. The reliable Baker boot meant the hosts trailed 21-22 with three minutes to go. The inevitable occurred, as the sands of time were drifting away, Battersea were awarded a penalty. Though it was only just in the Sutton half Cameron Baker, without hesitation, opted for the posts. His powerful kick was perfectly straight and Battersea Ironsides led 24-22. There was just time for the re-start and a dramatic denouement. The kick failed to travel the allotted distance. The subsequent scrum to the hosts, despite going back at a rate of knots, retained possession and the ball was kicked dead to spark Battersea celebrations of an epic 24-22 win.
It was a weekend of expansive rugby with the six fixtures accumulating 371 points. Sidcup and Brighton continue to slug it out for the title and guaranteed promotion. It was plain sailing for the leaders but once again Bromley defied their lowly status pushing Brighton to the limit. In the nether regions Old Reigatian, despite a spirited performance against Horsham, are teetering on the abyss and need, what they have not achieved all season, a win in Round 17 to keep mathematically alive.
The hosts had already beaten Sidcup 31-29 at Crescent Farm for one of the shocks of the season so a trip to the Warman Sports Club never promised to be a stroll in the park for Brighton. The Kent team were close to securing a memorable double as they lead with five minutes left on the clock. However, the Blues did not panic and took the five points.
Dartfordians enjoyed their best half of the season as they stormed into a 24-0 lead. Tries from Collins and Valladares brought the Pilgrims into the contest. However, poor discipline scuppered their hopes as entering the final quarter as debutant Mark Stone and Captain Will Hunt picked up yellow cards within a minute. Jack Hooban completed an accomplished hat trick for the hosts. A consolation try for Mitch Fielder left the Pilgrims agonisingly short of the second bonus point in a 26-34 loss.
Colfeians bounced back from conceding the opening score with tries from Chris Harris and a penalty try. The lead changed hands three more times before the Ironsides went into the break 24-17 to the good. A second try for Ryan Napper and one from Victor Spaczil levelled the match. Battersea edged ahead once more before Leo Cunningham made it 36-36. The Ironsides turned the screw in the final ten minutes and were rewarded with a goal and a penalty to win a highly entertaining encounter 46-36.
ORs must have felt a degree of trepidation hosting the side that crushed them 78-12 earlier in the season. The hosts proved there is plenty of life left in them with a rousing performance. Reigatian dominated the first quarter and responded to conceding the first score by taking a 7-5 lead courtesy of a Max Nicol try. The visitors, with a try and a penalty, secured a 15-5 interval lead. A spirited second half performance including two tries from Jonny Bridges and one from Dan Grant earned the Old Boys two bonus points. The game was notable for 20-year old Reigatian prop Ethan Monk gaining his 50th cap with potential to break appearance records in the future.
In contrast to their south coast rivals it was a stroll in the park for top dogs Sidcup. Seb Ellison celebrated his 50th 1st XV appearance with another bonus point win that keeps the Crescent Farm club on track and the pressure on Brighton. Increasingly it looks like the 21st March might be decision day for Regional 2 South East when Sidcup host Brighton.
What has appeared to be have been a racing certainty for a long while, depending on how charitable you might be, Old Reigatian’s relegation was confirmed with their latest defeat. Once again the top two secured 5-point wins and it looks unlikely that the title will go anywhere else than to Sidcup or Brighton with five rounds remaining. The battle to get into the promotion play-offs and avoid the drama of the relegation decider is far more complicated with numerous permutations.
Battersea Ironsides managed to garner 31 points against the most parsimonious defence in the league. Despite this the league leaders stayed in pole position as their relentless progress continues but the stubborn Brighton team made sure there is no clear water between the two. Meanwhile the Ironsides are one of the clubs where four points cover four teams who are hunting the fourth and fifth places in order to sneak into the play-offs.
After an opening score from the hosts Dartfordians hit back with a brace of tries from Jack Hooban. However, the Blues showed their title credentials regaining the lead. The see-saw nature of the game continued as the visitors held a slender interval advantage. Despite the Hooban hat trick, his second on the bounce, and a brace from Miles Taylor it was Brighton who had the final say scoring in the dying moments to clinch victory.
The Pilgrims condemned Old Reigatian to the drop whilst boosting their survival prospects. The Surrey men did not go down without a fight. Playing with the slope they took an early 7-0 lead. The hosts fought back with two tries to lead 12-7 at the break. Both sides suffered from excessive verbosity that was not appreciated by the referee and yellow cards were flourished. The bottom club took advantage to edge ahead. The match was decided by a 40-metre run by hooker Jack Dengate that was to prove to be the final nail in the Reigatian coffin.
A second quarter 24-point surge by Gravesend with a trio of tries, the best being a 70-metre run by Ben Hope, left the hosts 24-0 up at the break. Hooker Stan Dadson’s second try at the start of the second period made it 31-0 and gave no hint of the drama to come. Hindered by a hat trick of yellow cards Bromley fought back and a late double left the visitors cursing the clock.
An even first period with tries from Dele Agorioge and Leo Cunningham saw Old Colfeians go into the break trailing at 12-17. In contrast, the second half was a totally one-sided affair. For the hosts, winger Declan Nwachukwu completed his hat trick in an impressive seven-try display that keeps Horsham well placed for the post-season promotion push.

MAGPIES GOLF SOCIETY CAPTAIN
Felix Symonds magpiesgolfsociety@gmail.com 07976 062567
The Magpies are Sutton & Epsom RFC’s very own Golfing Society and all club members automatically qualify as members. You don’t need any particular high level of golfing skill although a sense of humour and ability to ‘lunch’ well will help!
Come and join players, past and present, and enjoy your fantastically entertaining Golf Society – a warm welcome is assured. We have four meetings a year including the legendary Christmas meeting and Captain’s Away Day.
For further information contact:
Felix Symonds (Captain) 07976 062567 magpiesgolfsociety@gmail.com
We are always looking for new business partners with whom we can build relationships for long-term mutual benefit.
In return, we can offer our sponsors a range of benefits, including opportunities to promote their business and their products, to generate direct sales via club membership and to entertain their clients, both at the club and at Twickenham.
We have a range of packages available to suit all budgets and objectives. For an initial discussion, without obligation, please contact:

The S&ERFC 200 Club provides additional fundraising for the club while affording members an opportunity to win one of 17 cash prizes in the course of a year. And yes, it is possible for one person to win all 17 draws – totalling £2,600!
Sign up at: sande200club@gmail.com with your full name and membership number.

It is always happy hour for members of Sutton & Epsom RFC at their local wine bar. Please present your membership card for 10% off your bill.
