Welcome to S&ERFC’s match-day programme, now produced in digital format.
The warmest of welcomes from S&ERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league.
The 2024-25 season brings a range of fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane.
Last season proved challenging, particularly for the men’s 1st XV. Ultimately, they finished in a comfortable eighth place, with the women’s 1st XV going one better, and finishing seventh in Championship South 1. At our level, league rugby is highly competitive, and is bound to become more so as the season progresses.
The Minis and Juniors section, both male and female, continue to thrive. The legacy of Jamie Paxton, whose vision and foresight led to the founding of this section, is there to be marvelled at every Sunday, and the vibrancy and enthusiasm these young players (and their parents!) generate gives the Club a real ‘buzz’.
We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all.
No club of our size and status could survive in the modern age without the support of sponsors. Some of our sponsors are represented by advertisements in this programme. Foremost amongst them is our headline sponsor: MB Associates, the company whose Managing Director is the redoubtable Monica Bradley. The Club is very grateful to all its sponsors for their continuing support – and I take the opportunity to remind all members that sponsorship is a two-way street: the more business Club members give to our sponsors (often on advantageous terms), the more that entrenches the relationship between the sponsors and the Club – to the advantage of both.
So, welcome once again. Let season 2024-25 be a season to remember at S&ERFC – for all the right reasons!
John Hardy President
We are again delighted to be supporting S&ERFC in our eighth year as the headline sponsor.
Our ongoing partnership with the club is a constant source of pride, both for myself and my team. To be a part of something that is such a cornerstone of the local community and is so inclusive, on so many different levels, is indeed a real privilege.
As a business based in Cheam Village which has traded in Surrey for nearly twentyfive years, we share many of S&ERFC’s values. Therefore, it’s a great pleasure to be involved again this year, both from a sponsorship perspective but also with members of our staff yet again playing for some of the senior teams.
Wishing everyone at the club all the best for the 2024-25 season, and of course enjoying some outstanding rugby in the coming months!
Monica Bradley Managing Director
MB Associates

The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing.
And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England.
The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers.
By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season.
Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years.
We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”
It is always happy hour for members of Sutton & Epsom RFC at their local wine bar. Please present your membership card for 10% off your bill.
Old Tiffinians RFC was founded in 1924 with Brigadier J.J. Harper, the long-serving Headmaster of Tiffin School, who became a significant influence in those formative years. The school dated back to 1638 courtesy of the legacy of brewer Thomas Tiffin for the educational benefit of ‘some honest poor man’s son’. The original home was the aptly named Home Park in Kingston. It was not long before the club established itself with a fixture list including notable names such as Wasps and Saracens. In 1938 the club recorded a celebrated season without their colours being downed and no doubt were robbed of an era of unbridled glory by the Hitler War.
1949 saw a significant change as the Old Tiffinians Association purchased its present home of Grists. The new facility bore witness to a vintage decade in the 1960s where the least successful season saw only seven defeats. A new pavilion was celebrated in the 1961-2 season with a splendid victory over a Surrey XV captained by the then England skipper David Perry that contained two other current internationals. Old Tiffinians locks on that afternoon, Ken Ebenezer and Brian Booking, were selected for Surrey on the basis of their showing and the former later represented Richmond FC and had three England trials. The success continued into the 1980s as the club fielded six sides and were prominent in the Surrey Cup with several semi-final outings.
With the onset of the league era OTs, as with most clubs, have enjoyed the vagaries of promotion and relegation. The highlights included a triumphant campaign in 2013-4 when Old Tonbridgians were the only side to defeat Old Tiffinians in 18 fixtures as they collected the Surrey 1 title with an historic high of 79 points as the club entered the London Leagues for the first time. At the sixth attempt they gained promotion from London 3 South West with champions Reeds Weybridge. The league restructuring had them placed in Counties 1 Surrey/Sussex in 2022-23 when they were second to Chobham but not promoted. Then last season they repeated that form to be runners up to Teddington, inflicting the only defeat (29-26) on the champions in the 22-game campaign, and were this time rewarded with promotion.
This season Old Tiffinians became Sutton & Epsom’s 107th league opponent and inflicted the heaviest defeat upon the Black & Whites so far this campaign with an impressive 41-19 triumph. With Sebastian Sabania and Ross Hobbs doubling up and Messrs Talman and Fawcett also crossing the whitewash it was comprehensive win for the OTs. Despite Sutton scoring through Baker, Hegarty and Jones they failed even to get a consolation bonus point.

2025 opened with Beckenham increasing their lead at the top of the table as they were enjoying a comfortable winter’s afternoon in Summer Avenue their nearest rivals, The Ironsides, were faltering at Rugby Lane. Sidcup’s win on the road took them into second place. Only a couple of points below that, on 48 points, are the triumvirate of Battersea, Medway and Reeds as once more the table reflects a very competitive league. At the other end of the spectrum Thurrock remain winless and must look back nostalgically to 6th April 2024 when the celebrated the end of the 2023-4 campaign with a thumping 55-10 win over Holt RFC.
Dartfordians 17 Reeds Weybridge 27
Reeds Weybridge returned to winning ways on their visit to Bexley after a fruitless December. After an opening score for the hosts from Liam Brencher the visitors impressively ran in 27 unanswered points. The five tries were spread around with Corner, Endeley, Fullen, Cole and Stevenson touching down. A spirited Dartfordian side hit back with tries from Number 8 Harry Whyte and a second success for Liam Brencher but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
The Gravesend revival gathers momentum with their first back-to-back wins of the season. An opening score from Stan Dadson set Gravesend on course after five minutes. Thurrock stormed back with tries from Henry Bird and Harry Reynolds. Finlay White’s try levelled the scores but a Rick Percival touchdown gave the Tees a 19-14 lead at the interval. Dreams of that elusive first win were dashed by indiscipline when first Kodie Holloway received a yellow card and late on Niall Clifford suffered the same indignity. 14-man Thurrock conceded tries from Stan Dadson, Will Steiner and Nathan Anderson. When the strugglers had a full complement James Fergus scored a try to make it 26-28. It was another ‘what might have been’ Saturday for the Essex team.
There was little debate over the Man of the Match in this fixture as John Sipawa ran in four tries for Medway. An early Old Colfeians goal at the start of the second period had the hosts trailing by 7-12. That was as good as it got as the Priestfields side finished with six tries with Max Bullock and Conor Chalmer adding to the Sipawa show as Harrison Fermor kicked four from six conversions. The bottom of the table, with the exception of Thurrock, is as equally congested as the top of the league. Gravesend’s successive wins has pulled Old Colfeians into the relegation mix and all those at Horn Park will be hoping for a strong finish to the campaign to retain their status at level 6.
Whilst other teams are faltering the main beneficiary in the chasing pack are Sidcup. They added a valuable away win against Reigatian but the close nature of the table will probable result in many more ups and downs before the league concludes in April.
In stark contrast to the dramatic collapse of a year ago Beckenham are gaining momentum and are getting stronger. It was seventh heaven for the leaders with winger Gabriel Jordan getting a brace in a very impressive seven-try away win that improved on their 36-18 success at home against Old Tiffinians. It was a rare afternoon when the Old Boys failed to collect a bonus point.
Round 15: 11th January 2025
If the casual supporter was pleasantly surprised that the previous week’s fixture list survived the elements despite the extreme weather that had dogged many regions there was disruption this week. League regulations make it very difficult to postpone games before the day. As ever a cold snap and the prospect of a frozen pitch creates the greatest inconvenience. It was an afternoon when the AGP (Artificial Grass Pitch) was a premium asset as only two matches survived.
It is therefore perhaps appropriate to provide the details of the rescheduled fixtures:
25th January:
Medway v Battersea Ironsides (Match postponed from 7th December 2024)
Reeds Weybridge v Gravesend
Sidcup v Sutton & Epsom
8th February:
Battersea Ironsides v Old Tiffinians
Medway v Old Reigatian
Beckenham 52 Dartfordians 26
Beckenham were very flexible when perhaps other league leaders would have been cautious. Their desire to play was richly rewarded as they gave up the familiar surroundings of Balmoral Avenue to switch to Dartford Valley RFC’s AGP. A bonus-point win and a 13-point cushion at the top of the tree was a very satisfactory outcome. However, there is one serious caveat, Battersea Ironsides have two games in hand equating to 10 points. The leaders crossed the whitewash seven times the previous Saturday and improved on that with an 8-try romp. Lamarr Sinclair collected a brace and there were six other scorers including a Lewis Bunton try to go with his six conversions. Dartfordians had the consolation of 26 points, 4 tries and a bonus point.
Thurrock 17 Old Colfeians 14
Joy unbounded at Oakfield, the drought is over and the fear of a blank season has been removed with a win. Not only was their rejoicing at the ground but also for all the Thurrock supporters who avail themselves of the club’s excellent streaming service that means their loyal followers can enjoy matches in the comfort of their choosing. To be fair it was an afternoon for hardy souls and to say it was crisp would have been an understatement. One suspects if there had been a strong wind backs would have had to have been chiselled off the pitch suffering from exposure. Thurrock switched to their artificial pitch and trailed after five minutes to a Jack Griffiths try that was converted by Ryan Napper. Kodie Holloway opened the hosts’ account with a try and the omens for a win were not auspicious as Harry Reynolds’ conversion came back of the upright. The kicker made amends by scoring Tees’ second try for a 10-7 interval lead. OCs started the second half with a goal from Charlie Nagel to regain the advantage. The final decisive score came with 15 minutes to go as Harry Reynolds scored his second out wide and then impressively converted from touch. One can imagine that the remainder of the game must have felt like an eternity for all those involved with Thurrock. With resilient defence they hung on for the 17-14 triumph. Considering the Oakfield outfit only lost 15-14 in Week 1 at Battersea Ironsides and all those who saw Sutton sneak home at Rugby Lane with a Dan Jones try on the last play of the game it is a surprise that a win has not come earlier.

This afternoon is a red-letter day for Alex Mount as he makes his 100th league appearance for the Black & Whites. His 1st XV career stretches back to the 2017-18 season which witnessed the arrival of such luminaries as Mike Schmid, Brandon Fanolua and Chris Kolapo-Ajala. Having watched the stunning opening day win at Barnes he made his debut off the bench away in Guernsey the following Saturday. However, his Sutton story started far earlier in the U6s being coached by Paul Matthews who was the father of his future 1st XV colleagues Pete and Andy.
Alex ‘Munch’ Mount had a very successful schoolboy rugby career as part of the successful John Fisher School XV in 2009 that reached the semi-final of the prestigious Daily Mail Cup where he suffered the pain of a penalty shoot out defeat to the eventual winners from Truro College. There was consolation when John Fisher became the first state school to win the illustrious St Joseph’s tournament in the same season. His rugby education was continued at UWIC and his talents were recognised with a place at Esher RFC under the astute guidance of Mike Schmid.
Reunited with Mike Schmid at Rugby Lane his first Sutton season was truncated by injuries. Next season he was most prominent in the glorious championship winning campaign of 201819. Playing 24 times he was part of a formidable front row quartet with Messrs Bruce, Farrell and Skoumbourdis. Promotion saw Sutton play in the rarefied atmosphere of Level 4 for the first time in their history. In Week 7 S&E ventured to Barnes. In the opening minute Munch scored after a stunning Sam Collinridge charge down and followed that up with another try. Though he did not emulate Gary Nash against Sevenoaks in 2006, to become the second Sutton prop with a league hat trick, he received an accolade no other Sutton player has ever achieved when the NCA made him National League 2 South Player of the Week.
In many ways he is a throwback to the era of 40 years ago. An ebullient character in the dressing room exhorting his fellow players to give their all with an expletive-laden pre-match tirade and always the first to see the funny side of any situation. One imagines he would have enjoyed the era of the annual Easter tours of yesteryear if his memorable visit to Redruth was anything to go by. Having left his boots at the hotel he was rescued by the fortuitous intervention of one of the Tadworth CC Branch of the Sutton Supporters Club. He did not let defeat dampen his spirits and thoroughly enjoyed Cornish hospitality as much as they enjoyed his company.
This afternoon he will hope to replicate Chris Farrell, the last centurion, who scored a try on his 100th appearance against Old Reigatian at Rugby Lane last season.
