It is with great regret that due to Covid-19 restrictions this year’s Remembrance Parade has been cancelled and will be replaced with a prerecorded Remembrance Service which will be aired on YouTube and Facebook on Sunday 8th November.

Meet the Delivery Team Meet Taylor – As part of our delivery team, she has two rounds, which she took over from her big Brother Ethan when he gained his adult status and got himself a fulltime job. Taylor who attends the Park Hall Academy in Castle Bromwich posts over 900 newspapers in the letter boxes of our lovely residents in Castle Bromwich.

Delivering the “Castle Brom Post” was a quite a hard-heavy task, with Mum having to follow her around with bundles of newspapers in the back of her car.

Not anymore, it’s now a “labour of Love” she now has a shiny new trolley which can carry over 800 newspapers.

Remember Coleshill fallen online this year Coleshill’s Remembrance parade has been cancelled and the parish church service will be an all-ticket event on Sunday 8 November. Covid-19 rules have forced the decision reached by the Coleshill branch of the Royal British Legion, the town council and the church.

These arrangements mirror those taken nationally with the parade at the Cenotaph also a much reduced affair.

Councillor Steve Caudwell October update Thank you for reading my October column.

Yet again, I’m afraid the major topic of my column must be coronavirus.

Since I last wrote you will of course be aware that new coronavirus restrictions have been put in place by central Government. You can always get the latest guidance at gov.uk/coronavirus.

Solihull is currently designated Tier 2, or ‘high’ risk. This means that we must continue to be exceptionally careful, and keep doing the basic things well – maintaining social distance of two metres; washing our hands more often and for at least twenty seconds, and wearing a face covering whilst in indoor public spaces like shops and public transport. I want to say how pleased I was when I was in Morrison’s earlier this week to see how well this was being enforced, and how co-operative we were all being. It’s by doing the right things and following the guidance that we will overcome Covid. All your councillors received a briefing on Wednesday (14th October) about the current state of play in Solihull, and there were some really important messages that I took from this meeting.

One is that every area in the borough is currently causing concern, including Castle Bromwich. This is not a problem that is confined to particular neighbourhoods – everywhere in Solihull has significant numbers of infected residents. The rate of infection is currently doubling every seven days, which is particularly worrying, and is currently over 150/100,000 residents. We were also told that the QE and Heartlands

hospitals are approaching capacity, and that the Nightingale facility at the NEC is on 72-hour notice to re-open.

These are trying times, and I want to give special thanks to our schools, who have worked tirelessly to remain open as best they can over the last few weeks, in the most challenging circumstances; to our shop owners and workers who are helping to keep us all safe by helping us to follow the guidelines we must; and of course our NHS, healthcare and social care staff on the frontline, who risk life and health to look after those of us who need it most.

I desperately hope I can write about better news soon.

Finally, on a more mundane note – many of you will recently have received our latest Green View newsletter, and may have noticed the (entirely deliberate, of course) error.

Your council is only planning to plant a quarter of a million trees over the next ten years, not one million! Even I, as a Green Party councillor, am not entirely sure where we’d put a whole million trees…

Under the current guidance we’re still discouraged from calling on people to speak to them directly about their concerns so for now we’re available by email and phone calls.

Since my last update we are now facing further restrictions due to Covid- 19, but life must still go on including a marathon virtual council meeting on October 6th lasting over 6 hours. Most of the time was spent taking foward the Councils Local Plan for the provision of some 15,000 additional homes during the period up to 2036. The continuing problem of inconsiderate parking by parents is still a major concern to residents living in the vicinity of our schools. I am grateful to the local Police and our Civil Enforcement Officers for their action in trying to deal with this issue. Fly tipping continues to be a problem and at the request of a resident our street care team have removed from the wood on Beechcroft open space a substantial amount of rubbish. I am also pleased to report the wooden steps at the Brownsover Close playground have been repaired. Further to residents concerns regarding the changing character of Castle Bromwich due to house extensions I have now received a detailed report from our Planning Department who have looked at 40 different extensions which have come forward over the last 3 years. The conclusion of the report was that the majority have been deemed as acceptable with only a quarter generating any objections.

However it was found some of the extensions do represent poor examples of extensions, especially dormers which are covered predominantly by permitted development rights. A number of enforcement actions are currently in hand to deal with unauthorised developments. I have received a request to deal with the speed of traffic in Beechcroft Road which I have forwarded to the local Police along with a request to our Highways Department for parking restrictions in Cleavdon Avenue. It was pleasing to read that Castle Bromwich Hall and Gardens Trust have received a cash grant of £95,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund, but sad to note the Castle Bromwich Singers annual charity show has been cancelled along with the Theatre Groups annual pantomime due to Covid- 19.

“Royal” homes for High Street Council planners are considering whether to allow Grade2 listed Queen Anne House in Coleshill High Street’s conservation area to be converted into seven dwellings.

The Man Who Wants to Make America Great - Student Voices JESS TWIGGER The social climate within America has been changing within the last few decades but not so drastically as it has with Trump. A huge divide between the left and right has formed a worrying argument between the two sides. Whilst this divide arguably began years ago, Obama’s left wing views pushed conservatives and the centre party further right. Trump provided an alternative, through not being any better himself. Trumps affect on the social climate has been one that has caused great friction between the opposing political parties. With his presence on social media as being something of a mockery to American politics.

Sphygmomanometer. Never heard of one? If you have visited your GP at some time in your life you have probably had one used on you. It’s the medical term for a blood pressure monitor! Medical staff use a patient’s blood pressure measurement to monitor many aspects of health and its helpfulness is immeasurable!

Blood pressure is a measure of the force that your heart uses to pump blood around your body.

Everyone has a blood pressure measurement and it is important to know what your ideal reading is and how to maintain a healthy level. Hypertension (consistently high pressure) is more common than hypotension (abnormally low pressure) but both can be an indication to your overall health and that is why medical staff will take a measurement and possibly ask questions regarding any family history of high blood pressure during appointments. An ideal measurement would range from 90/60 to 120/80 but these can fluctuate so don’t get stressed, just be aware of your BP and monitor it.

TAYLOR SMITH With the next presidential elections fast approaching on the 3 November the candidates begin to enter their final stretch of their campaigns. In this period Donald Trump struggles to defend his must-win states from the Democrat opposition, Joe Biden. The electoral college system is used within the US to elect its president, each state is given a number of votes based upon how many members it sends to Congress- House and Senate.

A total number of 538 electoral college votes are up for grabs, with a candidate needing approximately 270 votes in order to win. Polls in recent days have found Biden with a large lead nationally, heading 57% to Trumps 41%. Guy Cecil, the head of the pro-Biden super PAC Priorities USA, stated that Trump “is struggling to bring new voters into the fold” and “is running out of time” to do so. Although polls cannot necessarily reflect the true geographical breakdown of the voting population in America it does give an indication to the people’s feelings towards the candidates. In the 2016 presidential elections, in contrast to that of 2020, the polls were far less clear and just a couple of percentage points separated Trump and Clinton at several points as election day neared.

Due to the current clarity in Biden’s lead FiveThirtyEight, a political analysis website, says Biden is “favored” to win the election, while The Economist says he is “very likely” to beat Trump. Will 3 November truly see Trump’s fall from power?

EMILY CRICHTON Donald Trump’s speech from the balcony of the White House was seen as an unofficial campaign rally. This was his first speech after being recently diagnosed with Covid-19, where he states he is ‘feeling great’. It is somewhat unusual for a president to undermine the importance of a global issue, even as a student his casual response to the world’s situation baffles me. Trump states that Covid-19 is ‘going to disappear…vaccines are going to help and therapeutics are going to help a lot.’- offering a sense of false security to his citizens and portraying his presidential campaign as rather like a joke. He may be trying to provide hope for a struggling society and use Covid-19 as a tool to benefit his campaign. The fact that he deliberately wore and took off his mask is symbolic to his view on Covid-19 and, to me, indicates how he wishes to exploit the virus for his own gain. The constant reference to the ‘China-virus’ shows his ignorance towards the pandemic, and portrays China to be a joke. It will also worsen his foreign relations with other countries.

Trump is a man with influence, his views translate onto many Americans who do support him; so this discriminatory nature could be detrimental to America and the beliefs of those who live there.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is often linked to an unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking, drinking excessive alcohol, carrying too much body weight and not taking enough exercise. If ignored and untreated, high blood pressure can increase your risk of developing a number of long-term serious health conditions, such as strokes, vision loss, heart disease and kidney disease.

Other underlying medical conditions and certain medications can also cause hypertension so it is important you visit your GP for regular check-ups and never ignore invitations for your medical review.

A low blood pressure (hypotension) reading can be caused by a bout of diarrhoea, vomiting or blood loss and causes dizziness or fainting and can indicate sepsis, toxic poisoning or hormonal abnormalities. A sudden drop in blood pressure would be considered a medical emergency and medical assistance should be sought. Whether high or low, blood pressure needs to be monitored on a regular basis.

commended by the judges The Dugdale Society is devoted to studying Warwickshire’s past and publishes documents that throw light on the county’s history. The Society was founded in 1920 and is therefore celebrating its centenary this year. Various events were planned to mark the Society’s first hundred years, some of which have had to be postponed, but the centenary prize competition has gone ahead.

Professor Chris Dyer, the Chairman of The Dugdale Society commented “The Society wishes to congratulate the winner on the high quality of her work. The judges were impressed by the author’s careful use of sources, and the firm and reasoned conclusion, demonstrating her skills as a historian.

The writing is clear, and the essay is well presented and referenced.”

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) A Lasting Power of Attorney is a document that allows you to appoint somebody you trust to look after your affairs for you if you were ever unable to do so yourself. An LPA is a vitally important document- after all, none of us know what could be around the corner and without an LPA, it can be extremely difficult for your loved ones to manage your affairs on your behalf if you ever lost capacity.

There are two main types of LPA; Property & Finance and Health & Welfare. As the names suggest, the former allows your attorney to handle your finances on your behalf, including managing bank accounts, paying bills and collecting benefit payments. The latter allows your attorney to make decisions for you regarding your health and wellbeing, including managing your daily routine, the food you eat, the clothes you wear and the healthcare you receive.

What does it mean to “lose capacity?”

If a person has lost testamentary capacity, this means they can no longer legally make their own decisions when it comes to their property, finances, health, wellbeing and more. This may happen as a result of an accident, or because of a degenerative disease like Dementia.

Many people do not realise the scope of the consequences of losing capacity without having an LPA in place. While many of us assume that our partner, children or other loved ones could step in to handle our affairs, the reality is far different. Bank accounts that you hold jointly with others could be frozen, meaning bills could go unpaid and any loved ones that depend on the funds in that account are left stranded. Furthermore, for one of your loved ones to begin handling your affairs, they would need to apply for deputyship from the Court of Protection, a long, arduous and very expensive process that is not always successful.

By making an LPA, you can ensure somebody you trust is able to step in immediately should you need them to, easing the stress on your loved ones at what is likely to already be an emotionally challenging time.

Estate planning may seem like a far-off measure that most of us don’t need to concern ourselves with yet. In reality, the sooner we plan ahead, the more effective that planning will be. Once your LPA is registered, it is ready for use as soon as it is required- if you wait until you need an LPA, it is already too late to make one. It is far better to register the documents and never need them than to wish you’d done it sooner.

Military veterans of every generation will soon benefit from cut-price rail travel, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced today, as he presented Captain Sir Tom Moore with the very first Veteran Railcard.

Aimed at supporting veterans’ post-service, the newly unveiled Railcard will provide up to a third off all peak and off-peak fares, as well as discounted travel for adult companions and children. It forms part of the Government’s commitment to make this country the best place to be a veteran, helping repay the debt we all owe to those who have served.

At his home in Bedfordshire Captain Tom Moore, who served in World War II and won the nation’s hearts with his incredible fundraising efforts, was presented with the very first card.

The card pays tribute to the Royal Navy, RAF and Army, using the colours featured on the Veterans flag. An estimated 830,000 veterans, who are not eligible for existing railcards, will now be able to get up to a third off rail travel from 5 November 2020.

The new card will be on sale at an introductory price of just £21 until 31st March 2021.

Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, said: “We have an eternal debt of honour to those who have served our country, and this railcard is part of marking our gratitude. For veterans looking to re-enter the world of work and connect with friends and family, it will cut the cost of travel to open up new opportunities.

Delivering this Manifesto promise will improve lives for veterans and their families across the United Kingdom.

“I am also delighted to present Sir Captain Tom Moore with the very first railcard. Through his service and his inspirational fundraising, he has shown the selflessness and indomitable spirit of all those who have served.”

Captain Sir Tom Moore, Captain Tom Foundation, said: “This is a wonderful occasion to accept the first Veterans rail card.

“It is a rare opportunity to show thanks and gratitude to Veterans and this rail card is a necessary recognition and investment in Veterans, giving them the ability to re-connect and combat loneliness, something that we promote and support at The Captain Tom Foundation.”

The Rail Minister, Chris Heaton-Harris also visited the Building Heroes centre in Wandsworth, to meet with veterans undergoing a 6-week training course in building and construction.

Targeted at teaching veterans’ new skills and tackling unemployment by delivering a seamless transition into a career in the construction industry, Mr Heaton Harris discussed how the railcard would support re-entering civilian life after service.

Podiatrists vs Foot Peel Packs Following a nice Summer of hot weather and sandal wearing you may notice that your feet seem drier, particularly around your heels.

You may even notice that they have begun to crack. A popular trend for getting smoother feet is the use of “Foot Peel Packs”. These packs promise to literally peel away the top layers and leave you with smoother skin underneath. However, as with a lot of these types of products that offer a result quickly, they can be harmful to your skin.

In order to cause the skin to peel away, a lot of foot peel packs use acids to do this. This causes a chemical exfoliation which can be dangerous. It can be especially harmful if you have broken or fragile skin or if you suffer with eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis.

Another potential issue with using foot peel packs is that the acids in them are not able to distinguish between hard skin that needs removing and normal healthy skin that does not. This means you could remove layers of healthy skin which may leave your

feet sore and uncomfortable. As the skin begins to shed you may find that the loose pieces catch and may pull the skin that is still attached, potentially causing breaks in the skin that may be sore. If you are diabetic, you may have changes to your sensation or to your circulation which means you may not realise that these foot packs have caused a problem until it is too late. It is also important to note that the chemicals inside exfoliating foot peels may also be harmful if you are pregnant.

The safest way to remove hard, rough skin is to visit a Podiatrist regularly, use an emery board style file on your feet 3 times a week and to use a foot cream such as CCS every day. Our HCPC registered Podiatrists will also be able to provide you with expert advice on the type of footwear you should be wearing to help prevent rough, cracked skin.

Vital rail services protected through new deal with Arriva CrossCountry Government signs new contract with Arriva to ensure train services continue across the UK’s most extensive rail network, from Aberdeen to Penzance New contract takes CrossCountry in line with ERMA agreements, and brings stability to CrossCountry services for the future, providing certainty for passengers and staff By building back better on this railway, passengers will benefit from an extra 20,000 seats per week, there will be more operational staff and a greater focus on more environmentally friendly services Vital long-distance rail services that people the length of Great Britain rely upon will continue to run and support the UK’s recovery from COVID-19, thanks to a new contract signed between the Government and Arriva CrossCountry.

Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris has announced today (Friday, 16 October) that Arriva CrossCountry, which has run the service since 2007, will continue to operate the franchise for three more years until October 2023. This will provide certainty for passengers and staff as the future direction of rail reform takes shape.

As people return to the railway, passengers will benefit from increased capacity, and more train drivers and on-board staff to improve services and performance. This comes alongside new measures to help passengers with disabilities, including the ability to reserve space for assistance dogs and better staff training to meet the high standard, best practice seen across the rail industry.

The contract also has a renewed focus on tackling environmental impacts.

To reduce diesel emissions, Arriva CrossCountry will trial the use of electrical shore supplies when their Turbostar fleet are in depots for cleaning, which will reduce the use of diesel engines.

The Department will also continue to work with the owners of the Voyager trains to trial the use of on-train batteries when they enter and leave stations, so that engines are turned off when they’re at platforms further improving air quality.

Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris said: “This agreement ensures that vital train services will continue across the UK’s most extensive rail network, as the country continues to fight and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The deal announced today reaffirms our commitment to ending the complicated franchise system, and is focused on the best interests of passengers, delivering better services and helping create a new kind of railway.

“With a real focus on boosting capacity and seizing the opportunity to create more environmentally sustainable services, this new contract will benefit passengers in the long term, improving their experience when travelling on our railways.”

This new contract complements the Emergency Recovery Measures Agreements (ERMAs) announced in September, in place for up to 18 months, where the Government pays train companies a small management fee to keep services running through the pandemic.

The contract will see the Government take on the revenue and cost risk associated with the franchise and pay Arriva a performance-linked fee to run the service. This will incentivise the company to deliver improvements to operational performance, passenger experience and service quality.

Stretching from Aberdeen to Penzance and from Stansted Airport to Cardiff, CrossCountry’s network is the most geographically extensive passenger rail franchise in Britain. Calling at over 100 stations, it connects seven of Britain’s ten largest cities.

Remembrance Sunday Solihull Council will not be holding a traditional Remembrance Sunday service and is insisting that others should not hold services either, due to the current Tier 2 Covid-19 rules.

A joint statement from the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Stuart Davis and Councillor Alison Rolf, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, explains why the Council will not be holding a service and what other organisations can do to commemorate the day: Remembrance Sunday is an emotional time of year. We understand why people would want to gather at a War Memorial to pay their respects to those who served in the forces, especially in the two World Wars.

As the Mayor and the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, we both recognise that you will still want to commemorate this day and we want to help you to do this safely.

We recommend that in order to mark Remembrance Sunday this year with dignity, respect and in a way that is safe for you and your family, you remember those who served in your heart and in your home rather than at a War Memorial.

You could follow the suggestions below from the Royal British Legion so that you do not put yourself, or other vulnerable people, at risk by holding a public event, march

or parade. They have suggested a number of ways that you can recognise this very important day: • Pay your respects at home by observing the national two minutes’ silence and viewing local broadcasts, pictures and social media coverage.

• Make a poppy to display in your window as a sign of your support for the occasion.

• Have a small Remembrance Service in your garden with members of your household.

• Pre-record any wreath laying activity in your community and stream on the internet.

• Use Zoom/Facebook/Google, or another appropriate online meeting platform, to host an online Remembrance Service or activity so that people can participate from home.

• Set up a community Remembrance forum and share different residents’ stories.

Government guidance to prevent large events or gatherings has been designed to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus and, like all councils we have a duty to ensure the wellbeing of the community.

The government has created a three-tier system – medium, high and very high – with Solihull in the ‘high’ category. This means that it is now against the law for Solihull residents to

meet other households indoors (except with support bubbles). This is in addition to the national ‘rule of six’ and the local ban on meeting other households in private homes – though the rule of six will now apply to private gardens.

Therefore, this year you must not hold a parade or have a gathering of more than six people. In line with this we will not be holding a Civic Service this year. Instead The Mayor and Deputy Lord Lieutenant will lay a wreath at a short service which we will pre-record and stream on the Council’s website, YouTube and Facebook from 10:55 a.m. on Sunday 8 November.

Some people around the country are looking to observe the two minutes’ silence with their neighbours by standing outside their homes, which you may want to do, but please remember to observe social distancing.

Solihull Council appreciates that some members of the public will want to lay wreaths. If you do we would recommend that you avoid 11 a.m. on either Remembrance Sunday (8 November) or Armistice Day (11 November) to prevent groups of people gathering in one place.

Pirate’s Pantry Recipe of the month White Shell Clam Mariniere

It’s approaching that time of year when I look forward to rich, warming meals that take minutes to prepare. For me, quick meals almost always include seafood.

We must keep on protecting each other.

This is a little twist on the classic Moules Mariniere using white shell clams instead of the traditional mussels. Don’t get me wrong, mussels are wonderful but the clams are just that tiny bit sweeter and as such, just that little bit better for the soul.

Half the fun with this dish is that you can use your fingers to pick the clam meat from the shells using an empty shell, and with you all sharing warm crusty bread to mop up the sauce it creates a sociable element to the dining experience.

Ingredients 2kg White Shell Clams 2 finely chopped cloves of garlic 3 finely chopped shallots 1 shallot thinly sliced 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 bay leaf

375ml dry white wine 250ml double cream A handful of coarsley chopped curly parsley leaves, stalks removed 1 rasher smoked streaky bacon Salt and pepper to season

Method Sauté the thinly sliced shallot slowly until it begins to crisp. It’s necessary to do this slowly so it doesn’t burn.

Grill the bacon until crisp, but not burnt. Chop the bacon into small pieces and set aside with the crispy shallot to use as garnish later.

Rinse the clams under cold running water. Discard any that remain open.

Slowly soften the garlic and remaining shallots in the oil. Once translucent, add the clams, wine and bay leaf. Bring to the boil before reducing the heat. Cover the pan with a lid and let the clams steam in the wine for 2-4 minutes. Shake the pan to prevent the garlic and shallots from catching at the bottom of the pan.

Remove the bay leaf and any clams that remain shut. Add the cream and parsley.

Taste the sauce and add salt and pepper as required. Stir well and serve immediately.

Garnish with the chopped bacon, crispy shallots and a sprig or two of parsley.

Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens Gardener’s Tips for November Winds are picking up and there is no denying that nip in the air. There are plenty of jobs to do in the Gardens and your own this month. Protect your plants and with our gardening tips for November from our Head Gardener.

In the Gardens we will planting bulbs, in particular tulips before the weather breaks. We plant tulips in November to combat the threat of tulip fire, an unsightly fungal disease, which produces brown spots and twisted, withered, and distorted leaves.

We also cut back our Holly walk to keep it neat over winter, the offcuts are used to make Christmas wreaths and decorations. The Hawthorn also gets cut back towards the end of the month to keep it crisp and nice looking for the rest of winter and into early spring.

We start to clear the herbaceous beds of detritus too, especially if there are spring bulbs in them. This ensures the bulbs come up healthy and strong and not weakened from fighting their way through a layer of dead plant material.

In your garden, you can protect tender plants from frost and freezing, if you have outdoor containers you could insulate with bubble wrap. Raise containers onto pot feet or bricks to prevent waterlogging. Prune any roses to prevent wind-rock, high winter winds can uproot plants and this will help to prevent it. Winter can be a tough time for the birds too, you could place some food and water in your garden to encourage birds into the garden.

Counselling, Mental Health & Wellbeing Service for Young People

Kooth is a web based confidential support service available to young people, providing a safe and secure means of accessing mental health and wellbeing support, and designed specifically for young people.

Kooth offers young people the opportunity to have a text-based conversation with a qualified counsellor.

Counsellors are available from 12noon to 10pm on weekdays and 6pm to 10 pm at weekends, every day of the year on a drop-in basis. Young people can access regular booked online counselling sessions as needed.

Outside of counselling young people can message the team and get support the next day.

Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow

By Indira Mahun I really didn’t want to write about lockdown again but, having spoken to my elderly parents about their experience, I felt the need to bring to light the impact that Covid has had on the older generation. Each one of us will know that one person who we have been concerned about during this crisis. A neighbour who has been confined to their home, a parent or a grandparent who has been unable to visit their loved ones or it might be that you yourself are that person. The situation that we find ourselves in has taken its toll on all of us and affected us in different ways.

I spoke to an elderly gentleman who lives in Castle Bromwich. He is Mr Raymond Pearce – a retired bank manager in his 80s. Mr Pearce is still very much active, drives a car and uses public transport to get around. He writes weekly articles for the Water Orton Methodist Church and is a member of U3A Castle Bromwich. He says he keeps his brain active through researching for the articles. An ardent Liverpool supporter and follower of Water Orton Cricket Club, Mr Pearce was called up for 2 years National Service in the army in 1953 where he spent 18 months in Kuala Lumpur. He left the army in 1955 and says he loved his time abroad. He then studied at night school to pass the Institute of Bankers exams and served as a bank manager for the next 20 years. Following his retirement, Mr Pearce continued to stay active by lecturing to young bankers all over the country.

I asked him how he had felt during lockdown; “I have not enjoyed lockdown because it has altered the whole way of life but, at no time have I felt down or depressed. I accept that it was brought in to protect us from the coronavirus. At the very beginning, I went into full lockdown; only going out once a day for a walk”.

He says that “midway through the lockdown I suffered one or two days of extreme fatigue and it was then that I started doing my own local shopping and going for longer walks”. This, he says, helped him to feel better in himself.

I was curious to know how the lockdown had affected his social life as Mr Pearce isn’t one to stay confined to the indoors. He told me; “With the end of the cricket season I have no social life. I could walk round the ground and talk to people. We have no meetings at the U3A. I was endeavouring to learn German and was in the art appreciation group where I co-founded the poetry group. I had several steam train trips planned but they have not happened. I was due to go to Scotland with an old school friend staying on the Isle of Mull but that was cancelled.

I then decided, as rules were being relaxed, to start going into Birmingham City Centre and New Street Station. I do not do that now and, although the X12 bus is very near, not everyone on the buses wears a mask as required. No-one says anything to them so that is out now. I felt very vulnerable using the buses. I most certainly do not feel safe using public transport”.

Mr Pearce comes across as a kind and caring gentleman. Despite his own feelings during this crisis he still has time to think of others and says that; “One day on Radio WM I heard a lady being interviewed. She was a single parent with two children living in a tower block with the lift out of order. From that moment onwards I realised how fortunate I was. I never complain now and although I am alone all the time, I do not feel lonely”.

The pandemic has had the positive impact of bringing people closer together in times of need.

This is especially true in the case of neighbours who have rallied round to help one another. I asked Mr Pearce if he had felt supported by those nearby. He had this to say; Mr Raymond Pearce

“Very kind people did my shopping for me and it is fair to say I have been showered with kindness. People would phone up to see what I wanted. One kind lady sends round a cooked lunch every Sunday and occasional midweek meals. Today I received lamb chops with peas and potatoes. Two other ladies bring me meals from Marks and Spencer every Thursday and Saturday. They do not come in the house; in fact, only one person has been in the house since March”.

He then told me that; “One of my lifelines is my daily newspaper. Lots to read, puzzles to try to complete and during this time I have had one letter published in the Sunday Telegraph and one in the Friday sports letters. I think I have coped with ‘being confined to barracks’. The welfare officer of my old army unit sends messages to we veterans”.

Mr Pearce’s experience of Covid-19 shed much light on how vulnerable the elderly can be. He himself admits that he is fortunate because of the kindness bestowed upon him by those around him. It is sad, however, that he feels unsafe using public transport due to the selfishness of some individuals who deem it unnecessary to wear face masks. This is even more essential now with the rate of infections rising daily. We need to keep ourselves protected as well as protecting those around us. The ever-optimistic Mr Pearce concludes with; “I will end with a quotation from a Vera Lynn wartime song. ‘If you’re up to your neck in hot water, be like a kettle and sing’. That’s all folks.”

Saints alive! Peter and Paul have a new guide

Wash and brush up for the ticker at the heart of Coleshill Coleshill church clock is to have a complete strip-down and overhaul to fix timekeeping problems

A fresh look at the town’s 800 year old church is now on sale.

The new edition, in full colour for the first time since the guide was published in 1913, brings the church’s story up to date.

Previously unrecorded history of Saints Peter and Paul parish church has been discovered and included. Restoration and conservation work just completed has also been added, with specially taken, high-definition photographs taking a new look at familiar objects.

The original idea for a guide book was the then vicar’s, the Rev F W Wingfield Digby, in 1906 (see picture).

The first guide book is dated June 1913, and the work of curate the Rev C H Coles. Future authors would use his carefully researched information in their publications.

The next revision was in 1925 when the Venerable J H Richards, Archdeacon of Aston, was vicar.

Another guide was published in 1951 to mark the Festival of Britain, based on a revision of previous publications and research made by Ian Barton, son of the then vicar, the Rev H Douglas Barton.

An edition published in February 1980 sold out towards the middle of 1990, so the then vicar Canon Richard Bollard, invited Dr Andrew Watkins to write a new edition.

It contained a section on developments during the 1980s and photographs of important aspects of the church not featured in previous editions.

The 28 page guide costs £5 plus postage and was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The guide is also available from church or the vicarage office (01675 462188, email ColeMaxSecretary@outlook.com).

Coleshill congregation bowled over by Victoria’s font cover The oldest treasure in Coleshill parish church has a new partner - a stunning cover to match the 12th century font.

The finely carved Caen stone font has been a major attraction in the church for centuries. The new cover - “Living Water” - in marquetry with hand carved elements is the work of former Coleshill School student Victoria Walpole, now working in Northumberland.

She returned home to help vicar the Rev Nick Parker unveil it.

The cover was partly paid for from the legacy left by long-time Sunday school leader Annie Hamer.

Two present Sunday school members who worked with Annie, Dawn and Marie Milner, lent a hand with the unveiling.

The font is the church’s most famous feature and greatest treasure. It is generally believed to date from the mid-12th century. Nikolaus Pevsner, art historian and architectural historian best known for his monumental 46-volume series of county-by-county guides, described it as “outstandingly good”.

Victoria has added a sympathetic cover which keeps the integrity of the font and does not detract from it. It takes the form of a shallow bowl with fenestrations which reveal the inside of the font.

During a short question and answer question with the vicar before it was unveiled as part of the service, she explained to the congregation the processes involved in making it.

It includes fish swimming by a waterfall in the baptismal stream, hand-carved leaves at the side of the stream or floating with the current, and pebbles. It has green credentials: the ivory used in the waterfall came from recycled piano keys.

Lots of wood offcuts were used, too.

The 160-year-old timepiece, made in Coleshill, has been serviced annually for many years, but an inspection to find out what is causing its erratic behaviour has revealed work costing about £10,000 needs to be done to enable it to keep the town on time for decades to come.

Clock engineers will abseil down the tower from the battlements to remove the hands, so that the internal dial motion works inside the tower can be dismantled, freed and cleaned. The holes in the tower wall through which the drive shafts go will also be cleaned out if needed. Pigeon nests blocking the holes have been known to stop the clock.

The High Street-facing dial has been showing noon (or midnight) for some time. Stiff bearings on its internal mechanism were found during a routine service, and to stop it affecting the rest of the mechanism was disconnected.

The clock mechanism itself will be dismantled, washed and cleaned to remove the build up of old oil and dirt. Several of the bearings, particularly the back time side bearings, are very dirty and require attention.

The auto winding system installed in 2003 is coming to the end of its life expectancy and is now unreliable. To meet current expert advice it will be replaced by a mechanism which will sit under the clock instead of to the side, driving different wheels to reduce wear.

Before the auto-winding mechanism was installed the clock had to be wound by hand twice a week to keep it running.

The clock was made by William Leeson, who is buried within sight and sound of the church. Family member Chris Leeson, who owns and runs the Ying Yang Centre acupuncture clinic, is the fifth generation with a business in Coleshill. “So that makes William my great great grandad” she said.

Countless different wood veneers and mother of pearl were also used in its construction.

Nick said afterwards: “I was thrilled with everyone’s response and have had several people say that, having seen how wonderful it is, they would like to support the project.

“The more you see it, the more there is to see.”

Victoria’s career as an artist in wood, using a scalpel rather than paper and brush, started with CDT at Coleshill School before an arts foundation course at Nuneaton and Hinckley College then university on the way to a first class honours degree in industrial design. A six year stint as a toy designer in Hong Kong followed before returning to self-employment in the UK. An early project was making marquetry images of the Cumberland Arms in the centre of pub tables.

In the heart of the Ouseburn Valley, Northumberland, it is one of the homes of folk sessions in Newcastle, with traditional music and singing in the back bar on most nights, Covid permitting.

Victoria has written to him to say it was finished and unveiled earlier this month.

Water Orton Parish Council Projects for the Coming Year Water Orton Parish Council is in the prosses of drawing up plans for the projects that it believes need to be considered for the coming year. This year has been a strange year (to say the least) and many of our ‘normal’ methods of communication have had to be redesigned, which has forced the council to hold their meetings virtually. As a consequence of this change to our operating methods, this year’s Annual Parish Meeting will also be held remotely.

However, the council want to ensure parishioners are still able to have the opportunity to have their say as they would if they were face-to-face with the Council.

One of the key discussion points for the Annual Meeting is to find out from residents what improvements, projects or services in their community they would like the council to consider carrying out on their behalf.

The council has drawn up its own list which it believes to includes some important projects but would appreciate as much input as possible from the community.

There are two defibrillators within Water Orton that are available to the public, there are other defibrillators that are ‘privately owned’. You may have seen outdoor exercise equipment in other towns and villages. Exercising outdoors provides all the physical benefits of indoor exercise and can also provide vital exposure to sunlight that increases important levels of vitamin D.

6 Investigate obtaining land for conservation and wellbeing

2 Bus shelter renovation The current Bus shelters are in need of repair and in some cases may need to be replaced.

3 Improve the children’s play equipment The children’s play equipment on the Playing Field and the Green is regularly maintained by the Parish Council.

However, the Parish Council believe that the current equipment should be considered for being updated. This would involve obtaining grants to help with the cost.

4 Investigate land availability for more allotments Water Orton Parish Council currently has three allotments and there is a very short waiting list requesting allotments.

It is well documented that gardening has great mental and physical benefits.

The council are aware of the vital importance of wellbeing and the need to find areas for calm and tranquillity.

The council are seeking the views of Water Orton residents, not only for their own ideas but also if they would support the above initiatives of the parish council.

Water Orton Annual Parish Assembly The coronavirus continues to create many challenges in our lives, including trying to continue to provide a service from your local parish and town councils.

Water Orton Parish council hold the monthly parish council meeting remotely. Although this is not ideal the local councils are advised by their advisory bodies, The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) and Warwickshire Association of Local Councils 9WALC), to continue with this practice until further notice.

As the pandemic took hold and the country was put into complete lockdown, this meant that the parish council could not hold its Annual Assembly in May this year. This meeting is designed to give the community the opportunity to have it’s say on what they would like their council to do for them and also to offer a platform to local clubs and organisations to promote their cause.

It is vital that the line of communication between the council and community remains open, that the village is given an update on what the council has achieved on its behalf since the last meeting held in May 2019 and their plans for the coming year.

Water Orton Parish Council have therefore decided to hold a remote meeting via Zoom on Tuesday 24th November at 6.30pm. This meeting will include a report from the parish council chairman and a financial statement from the clerk.

Hs2 will be making a presentation. As all face to face public meetings and consultations are unable to take place, it was decided this would be an opportunity for Hs2 to give an update on the progress of work and changes that have been made regarding construction.

There will also be an opportunity for clubs, organisations and individuals to give a short presentation to raise awareness and give an update on their particular cause.

Winter news from Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens

Our story begins 20 miles away, over in Lichfield, where myself (Kim Green) and ‘’work-husband, not real-life husband’’ Pete Bramley used to run a pub for years but sadly, due to HS2 plans, came to an end at the end of last year. I think it says a lot that of all the staff there, the majority of them came to work here. We very much consider ourselves a ‘’family run’’ pub as we have been together for years and of course spend so much time together.

On the 8th January a £500,000 refurbishment of The Swan began. The outdoor space was expanded and in addition to the pub’s picnic tables and garden benches, there is also a new stone terrace with tables and chairs, and a pergola lit with festoon lighting and outside heaters for these chilly nights ahead.

With all the excitement of October, bursts of Autumn colour and spooky celebrations, November brings a more distinguished sense of calm to welcome us deeper into winter. The splendid Autumn colour is now fading and giving way to foraging robins, crisp breath and frosted red berries on the Holly.

The whole of the UK will be experiencing some form of hibernation this year and we are likely to be doing the same. The Gardens may be closed for a couple weeks in November to make way for some seasonal changes and improvements. We aim to make the most of this downtime by removing the rather unsightly office buildings, clearing our courtyard and creating a cosy, safe space to sit and enjoy a warm drink and splendour of the Gardens as they should be.

We understand the importance of having a safe open space to wander in and get some peace and inspiration.

Therefore, we will be opening during usual hours of Wednesday through to Sunday 10:30am – 4:30pm across the winter season, whilst maintain our social distancing and cleaning regimes and responding to any further government regulations. Expect some special Christmas activities to brighten the spirits too! Please keep a close eye on our website and social media for all updates and current visiting information.

We are also thrilled to have been awarded government funding from the Cultural Recovery Fund. The money will go towards our general costs up until the end of March, a huge relief for us in these uncertain times as this will keep us in operation. Of course, there are many projects and improvements the Gardens will need to keep us going in the future, but for now this is very gratefully received to keep this special place open for all to enjoy.

The Swan really has been upgraded, but also still has a traditional country pub feel with original features like its beams, flagstones, exposed brick and stone walls and fireplaces. We have our beloved wood burning pizza oven in the centre of the dining area, where fresh pizzas are prepared and cooked.

We had a wonderful first few weeks of business when we did re-launch and open. The photos provided are from the launch nights we held. But it was all short lived as two and a half weeks later we, the same as all hospitality businesses, had to close our doors. It was heartbreaking for us all, we had all been so looking forward to a fresh start in a new area.

We are so grateful to be re-open now, but it has been even more of a challenge as a new business especially. We have removed tables, to ensure social distancing is more possible and have replaced tables for service for ‘’sanitation stations’’.

Reducing table numbers and capacity essentially feels like turning away custom, which after a huge investment is of course financially worrying, but we want people to enjoy themselves as well as feel safe here.

We had plans of grandeur here pre-lockdown, we looked forward to holding a monthly pub quiz, acoustic music on a Thursday night in the bar, and beer festivals in the summer. All of course are now impossible given restrictions in place. We had hoped to offer breakfasts at weekends, but sadly this hasn’t been possible either.

We thought for this month we’d have a more in-depth look at wallpaper and the various ways it can be used in your home. Choosing a wallpaper can be a minefield, there are literally thousands of different designs to choose from and as if that isn’t enough it’s also worth taking into consideration the quality. A poor quality paper will be far less likely to leave a good finish, regardless of how experienced you are, this is further complicated by it not being as simple as getting what you pay for- it’s not always the case that more expensive papers are higher quality. With that in mind we’d suggest reading any available online reviews that focus specifically on difficulties in working with the paper. Better still, if you get the chance then seek the advice of a professional decoratorwe’ve worked with all of the most commonly used brands and will be able to advise you whether or not you’re going to have any problems.

Some technical aspects to take into account when choosing wallpaper are whether or not you will be lining the walls prior to papering. It is a misconception that if walls are in good condition they don’t need lining, it is often the case that lined walls will provide a better, higher quality finish to your wallpaper by reducing the risk of the seams opening. If you check the back of the label for the hanging instructions most wallpaper manufacturers will recommend or even insist on lining prior to hanging the paper. This means that if there is a problem with the paper once you’ve hung it and you haven’t lined the wall the manufacturer won’t accept any responsibility and you’ll be left out of pocket. Also think about the manufacturing process- most modern papers are produced using laser printing but some more traditional papers such as Farrow and Ball are still manufactured using traditional processes. While this often means a beautiful, hand finished quality it also means that they are susceptible to discrepancies in the pattern. If you are a perfectionist then this might not be the type of paper for you. Before hanging the paper read the label to check if a certain type of paste is recommended. Generally ready mixed paste will be more effective and help you achieve better results than powdered adhesive due to their higher performance and they are suitable for the majority of wallpapers. Finally always remember to check the batch numbers on the rolls of wallpaper. If they are from different batches there can often be discrepancies in the pattern and colour of different rolls.

Now, let’s get back to deciding on a wallpaper. For a long time it was fashionable to just have one or two papered feature walls in a room but over the last couple of years we’ve been seeing a bit of a shift back to having whole rooms papered. The first thing to decide is whether you want to make a bold statement or simply add a bit of subtle texture to a room. atinum_ID_ad_93x70(outlined type).indd 1 11/08/2015 12:25 Using a wallpaper with a neutral colour but some texture can add interest and warmth to a room without taking the focus away from decorative features such as fireplaces. Textured papers are often considered to be more traditional but there are many modern variations available that feature subtle patterns that appear to change depending on lighting conditions. Another advantage of textured paper is that it can disguise uneven walls and due to being thicker is usually easier to work with.

Another option is to look at patterned papers. If you are tempted but nervous about using flamboyant patterns then it can be good idea to try something out in a room that isn’t used as much such as a spare bedroom. This can give you an idea of what it’s like to live with while not being in your face on a daily basis. A commonly held belief is that larger patterns are better for bigger rooms and small patterns are better for small rooms. While this can be the case it’s also true that using a large pattern in a small room is great for creating a sense of drama. It’s important not to feel restricted when considering paper for small rooms.

We’ve seen many examples of small cloakrooms that have been papered using busy and intricate patterns to great effect. Pattern designs that run vertically can have the visual effect of extending the walls from floor to ceiling, this can be useful in rooms with low ceilings to create the illusion of more space. Using a paper with a dark, bold pattern in a small room or a bedroom can really enhance the feeling of a cosy, relaxing environment, on the other end of the scale a busy, intricate pattern is not always the best option for bedrooms as these can be less relaxing and are better suited to rooms or areas you spend less time in.

In rooms with poor light metallic papers can bounce any available light around the room which can greatly improve the natural light available. On a large flat wall in a big room a soft, delicate pattern that looks less distinct from a distance can have a softening effect and create interest across an otherwise flat and uninteresting walls.

I hope your all keeping well now the colder months are settling in, our heating has definitely been switched on! It’s time for hot water bottles, hot chocolate, snuggly blankets and bobble hats! It’s not only us that feel the winter settling in but our fabulous wildlife too, this activity is great to help them with their food search and the kids loved getting involved.

A fabulous Autumn activity to do with kids. Please supervise children at all times, especially around the tools.

YOU WILL NEED: • Pumpkin • 2 Bowls, 1 for the seeds and 1 for the pumpkin flesh (for that Pumpkin pie or Autumn stew!)

• Pumpkin tools / Knife (Adult use) • String • Scissors • Wild Bird food

First chop your pumpkin in half horizontally.

Carefully use the knife tool to cut away any pumpkin flesh but still leave a thick rim to keep the pumpkin bowl sturdy.

Poke 3 small holes into the sides of the pumpkin about half way down. This is to add the string that the feeder hangs from, so the holes shouldn’t be too close to the top as the string will cut through.

Look to - Eddie’s 100 Former Coleshill parish church bellringer Eddie Connington rang the bells for lots of people in his career as a church bellringer, but never imagined he’d see the day when he would be the centre of at-tention.

But as a result of a chance remark at his Birmingham care home, wondering whether 100 cards could be sent, Eddie was able to cel-ebrate his 100th birthday in style, with hundreds of cards and an eight minute video of sociallydistanced Coleshill ringers ringing for him.

One of the cards was from HM The Queen.

The video was made by Janet Pearson, the daughter of another res-ident, after she put out a call on Facebook for 100 cards for him.

Jan recorded the bells being rung for the Harvest Festival service, and combined that with footage of the church, to be edited by hus-band Chris. Eddie viewed it in his room, delighted to see some famil-iar faces and hearing the bells again. He told staff it brought back good memories.

The ringers also sent a framed certificate commemorating the event.

News of Eddie’s impending 100th birthday was shared on BBC Ra-dio WM as part of the station’s Make a Difference campaign, which was set up to help people through the coronavirus pandemic.

Hundreds of people sent messages of congratulations on social media to be included in Radio WM’s giant birthday card.

Eddie started ringing at 49 when he was invited to have a go by a work colleague, Harry Walker, who rang at Coleshill.

He was hooked until he could no longer climb the 46 stone steps to the ringing chamber, and called “that’s all” for the last time.

At various times Eddie was steeple-keeper, vice captain, captain and secretary.

He was one of those who collected waste paper to pay for the res-toration of the bells in the late 1970s, and as an officer of the Coleshill guild of ringers at the time had his name

permanently cast on to one of the new bells.

He rang treble (the first) and Harry tenor (the last) when the first method (Plain Bob Caters) was rung on the new set of 10 bells on 10 July 1979.

Eddie kept in touch, attending ringers’ barbecues and meals with daughter Pam. Eddie introduced her and son Brian to ringing, too.

“I have been absolutely flabbergasted at the response,” said Pam, who sang a socially-distanced Happy Birthday outside her father’s room along with his sister, Betty, 93.

Eddie, a former electrical engineer in the RAF, and an electrical engineer at the BSA, was also been sent Lancaster Bomber mem-orabilia, as he worked on the aircraft during World War Two. The now media star Eddie had the last word on BBC Radio WM’s breakfast programme and Midlands Today. “It’s fantastic!”

News from St Clements Church, Green Lane, Castle Bromwich St Clements Church or using its full name (St Clement of Alexandria) sits on the corner of Clevedon Avenue and Green Lane, the building having been completed in November 1966. On the 4th February 1967 a service of dedication took place led by The RT Reverend J L Wilson. The land on which the Church sits was given by the then Earl of Bradford to the people of Castle Bromwich in perpetuity, before the completion of the building services were held on the lawned area in front of the Church. The Cross used on those occasions now sits within the Church Building and is very much part of our heritage.

St Clements although built in the 60’s has so much history and over the coming months we will be sharing some of this with you. How, what and why was the Church built and some of the people involved at the beginning of this journey to the present day.

2020 is a year like no other and members of St Clements have had to come up with ways of commemorating and celebrating special events within the Church calendar.

It is so important that we remember those that gave so much for the Freedoms which we all enjoy today and at St Clements we will be holding a Remembrance Day service and observing the 2-minute silence as in previous years on Sunday 8th November. The service will also be streamed for those not able to join us. Unfortunately, numbers will be limited and booking is essential.

The “Big” NIV Bible which was given in memory of William is now used at all services.

Here are some other memories shared by Church members, which are so important.

Janet Vaughan shared with us about her dad who came home with three gunshot wounds and nearly having to have his leg amputated. Although slightly disabled, he still was able to lead a full life and was a true hero to them all.

Ann Kew can still picture her dad in his army uniform and her uncle in his busby hat and red jacket, who was just about to board a ship when war ended (he had a posting to go to Holland).

We at St Clements salute all who have given so much and put their lives on the line for us all. We will remember.

As a Church we look forward to 2021 with all that is happening and especially the work behind the scenes to be able once again to bring back the Oasis Community Café. It will not be the same, but in some ways just the same. The welcome, maybe a slightly different menu but still a place where people will be able to come, catch up with friends, make new friends or just enjoy a coffee / tea or maybe that cake.

Plans are being drawn up to use the back of the Church to create a be-spoke kitchen and café area. For anyone who is familiar with the Church this is the part of the building known as the Bridgeman Room and also includes the warden’s office.

We are aiming to open once again in the Spring of 2021 and as you can imagine this is a “big” undertaking for us. We have a long way to go and will still be fundraising to “make this happen”.

BUT we are on our way .....

The love of books starts at a very early age and storytelling for young children is so very important. “Open the Book” gives an opportunity for the Church to be able to do this, giving that first glimpse into the life of Jesus. Some members are really good not only by reading the story but by acting as well. We hope to be able to start this during 2021.

All flowers have a meaning and the red poppy is a symbol of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Poppies are worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community. The poppy is a well-known and well-established symbol, one that carries a wealth of history and meaning with it.

Ann Wright remembers her dad William Payne who was part of St Clements for many years and an active member of the congregation. William took part each year in the service of Remembrance held in Church and used the words of the poem For the Fallen “They Shall Not Grow Old” written by Robert Laurence Binyon.

William was also a very talented artist and after he retired shared this talent with children at High Meadow School in Coleshill. One of his oil paintings sits as a reminder of his talent and commitment to St Clements in the Bridgeman Room and is an oil painting called “The Sheep on the Hill”.

We will be starting sessions at the Leisure Centre on a Friday evening but will still continue the Saturday sessions.

From Friday 6th November we will begin sessions at the Leisure Centre. They will be split into two sessions, 4-45pm for nursery and reception years (minimum age 3) boys and girls, then 4.45-5.30 years One and Two or above. Due to Covid there will be restrictions on numbers so we have decided to do a pre-booking system. From 6th November to 18th December there are 7 weeks so we propose a 7 week course at a cost of £35 with a trophy and a Xmas Party on the last session, on a first come first served basis for both the early and late sessions.

At the same time we propose to continue with the Saturday morning sessions at the Memorial Park 9am til 10 with the same pre booked arrangement but opening up that session to an older group as well. So it will be from nursery ( minimum age 3) to School Year 6 (maximum age 12) with a trophy and a party on the 19th December, the last session before a two week break, again at a cost of £35 for 7 weeks. Anyone signing up for the Friday and Saturday sessions gets a £5 discount off each ie £60 for two courses.

Match Reports Monday 28th September Southern League Coleshill Town 0-1 Corby Town Corby are one of the title favourites and will definitely be in the top four come the end of the season but Coleshill matched them for long periods of this game. The only goal of the game was a cracker from an experienced Corby striker who had previously scored 100 goals at this level. Coleshill were always in the game but Josh Willis was harshly shown a Red card and Coby cleverly closed the game down.

Saturday 3rd of October Southern League Berkhamsted 0-1 Coleshill Town Berkhamsted were top of the League when last season came to an abrupt halt due to Covid 19 and are expected to push for promotion this term. Coleshill started well and deservedly took the lead with a strike from Ethan Mannion. Unfortunately Town midfielder Danny Tymon was sent off for a second yellow card just before half time. Coleshill defended magnificently but had their fair share of luck. The home side had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for off side. Super Coleshill keeper Paul Hathaway saves a penalty and the woodwork came to the rescue twice but the performance deserved that bit of luck.

Tuesday 6th October Southern League Thame United 4-1 Coleshill Town The organisation by the Town defence in the previous game went missing as Thame scored twice inside the first Five minutes. Coleshill slowly got back into the game and scored just before half time through Daniel Dubidat. Town took charge early in the second half but a break away goal extended the home sides lead and they added a fourth in the 90th minute.

Saturday 10th October Southern League Coleshill Town 1-4 Aylesbury United Aylesbury went top of the league with this win but other than the four goals Coleshill gifted the opposition, there was little between the sides. A defensive mistake allowed United to take the lead but Daniel Dubidat equalised. Two further errors meant it was 1-3 by half time. Coleshill dominated possession in the second half but hardly troubled the opposition keeper and in the dying minutes another lapse of concentration allowed the visitors make it four.

Saturday 17th October F.A.Trophy Wisbech Town 1-2 Coleshill Town Due to the level of non league football Coleshill now play they compete in the Trophy and not the Vase. In the last two years they have lost at the first hurdle so this was a history making result, a first FA Trophy win. Coleshill were the better team and had the better chances but they had to wait until the 50th before taking the lead through Kai Tonge.

Daniel Dubidat made it two when he charged down the keepers clearance and rolled into an empty net. Wisbech scores from a corner late on but Coleshill had done enough for a famous victory.
