Note on the Program from Patrick Dupre Quigley Welcome to the 2024 installment of Seraphic Fire’s Enlightenment Festival. For both our programs, we start in the city of Naples. The Scarlatti family— Alessandro, father; Domenico, son—were unquestionably the first musical family of the Kingdom of Naples. Alessandro, lauded for both his magnificent operatic output, and for his contribution in developing that very form, set a general standard for excellence in composition, particularly in the vocal music genres. This program will primarily examine his genius in secular and sacred counterpoint, through the performance of four of his Italian madrigals, as well as three movements from the Missa Clementina, an “old-style” mass written in fivepart Renaissance counterpoint. Domenico, in addition to being a figure of ultimate prowess on the harpsichord, also had a significant output of the same vocal genres in which his father excelled. In our Week I program, we recognize that son of Naples through two of his more fantastical vocal works: the double choir Te Deum and the spectacular 10-voice Stabat Mater. Our Week II program similarly begins in Naples, this time with a romance between two celebrities of the 18th century, Emma Lady Hamilton and Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson. Emma, wife of the British Envoy to Naples, was introduced to Nelson in 1793 While a fondness was kindled then, their love affair was lit ablaze four years later when an injured Nelson returned to Naples after his defeat of Napoleon’s armies at the Battle of the Nile. In 1799, Nelson was summoned back to England. Accompanied by Lady Hamilton’s husband, the two made the overland trek back, traversing the European continent and stopping at the Court of Esterházy, where the court composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, honored them with a concert. On that concert was the “Marie Therese” Te Deum, a newly-composed heroic song by Haydn (Lines from The Battle of the Nile) celebrating Nelson’s triumph in Egypt, and the recently premiered Missa in angustiis, or Mass in Troubled Times, henceforth to carry the nickname “Nelson Mass”. Lady Hamilton participated in this performance both as an honored guest and as a musical performer, premiering Lines from The Battle of the Nile with the composer at the keyboard. Thank you for joining us for this fascinating exploration of three exceptional composers from the 18th century, and we hope you enjoy the programs.

Sdegno la Fiamma Estinse
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) I loathe the smoldering flame And rebuff the arrow and untie the knot that burns me, that pierces me, and that binds me. The heart fears neither the bonds nor the wounds, nor passion, nor sudden cures. Oh treacherous one! If you have those clear eyes that are happy without amorous troubles, then spurn the fire, quarrels, and snares of love.
O s’hai quegl’occhi tuoi sereni Che lieti fuor dell’amoroso, impaccio, Sprezza l’incendio, le quadrelle e’l laccio.
Mori, Mi Dici A. Scarlatti
“Die”, you tell me, while With that cruel look you kill me, With your sweet words you give me life. Alas, what a violent life, That keeps me alive only because it kills me! Wait! I can see it now what you bear In your eyes and in your mouth Beautiful cruel woman, long live death!
Mori, mi dici e mentre Con quel guardo crudel morir mi fai, Con quel dolce parlar vita mi dai. Ahi, che vita omicida, Che mi tien vivo sol, perchè m’ancida! Lasso! Ben veggio omai come negli occhi E nella bocca porti, Bella donna crudel, viva la morte!
O, Selce O Tigre, O Ninfa A. Scarlatti
O flint, O tiger, O nymph, Cold, cruel, and beautiful You, who never falls in love forever, and never not in love You shoot if you aim And the sparks come to whomever you aim for. And the aiming is targeted Beautiful, yes, but ruthless Either with iron, or with darts of others’ torment And you joke with love, though you don’t feel it.
6
O Morte
A. Scarlatti O death, dark for all others, bright for me, Drive away with your dart the dart of love. Let your icy cold extinguish the fierce heat of love, Let your scythe break its chains.
Missa Clementina A. Scarlatti
I. Kyrie Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
IV. Sanctus et Benedictus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosannah in the highest.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosannah in the highest.
VI. Agnus Dei Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

10. Make me to bear Christ’s death, sharing in His passion, and commemorate His wounds.
11. Inflame and set on fire So that by you, Virgin, I may be defended on the day of judgment.

Te Deum a 8 D. Scarlatti
Te Deum laudamus: te Dominum confitemur. Te aeternum patrem, omnis terra veneratur.
O God, we praise you; O Lord, we acclaim you. Eternal Father, all the earth reveres you.
Tibi omnes Angeli: tibi caeli et universae potestates. Tibi Cherubim et Seraphim, incessabili voce proclamant:
All the angels, the heavens and the Pow’rs of heaven, Cherubim and Seraphim cry out to you in endless praise:
“Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra maiestatis gloriae tuae.”
“Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are filled with the majesty of your glory.”
Te gloriosus Apostolorum chorus, Te Prophetarum laudabilis numerus, Te Martyrum candidatus laudat exercitus. Te per orbem terrarum sancta confitetur Ecclesia: Patrem immensae maiestatis; Venerandum tuum verum et unicum Filium; Sanctum quoque Paraclitum Spiritum.
The glorious choir of Apostles sings to you, the noble company of prophets praises you, the white-robed army of martyrs glorifies you, Holy Church throughout the earth proclaims you, Father of boundless majesty, with your true and only Son, worthy of adoration, and the Holy Spirit, Paraclete.
Tu rex gloriae, Christe: Tu Patris sempiternus es Filius. Tu, devicto mortis aculeo, aperuisti credentibus regna caelorum.
You, O Christ, are the King of glory, you are the Father’s everlasting Son; when you resolved to save the human race, you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb; you overcame the sting of death and opened wide the Kingdom of Heaven to those who put their faith in you.

Tu ad dexteram Dei sedes, in gloria Patris. Iudex crederis esse venturus.
You are seated at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe you are the Judge who is to come.
Te ergo quaesumus, tuis famulis subveni: quos pretioso sanguine redemisti.
And so we beg you, help your servants, redeemed by your most precious blood. Number them among your saints in eternal glory. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance. Shepherd them and raise them to eternal life. Day by day, we bless you and praise your name for endless ages evermore.
Dignare, Domine, die isto sine peccato nos custodire. Miserere nostri, Domine, miserere nostri. Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos: quemadmodum speravimus in te. In te, Domine, speravi: non confundar in aeternum.
Be gracious, Lord, on this day, and keep us from all sin. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy. May your mercy be upon us, Lord, as we place our trust in you. In you, O Lord, I rest my hope: let me never be put to shame.

Lines from the Battle of the Nile Haydn
Recit: Ausania trembling ‘midst unnumber’d woes sat lost in silent grief, hopeless nor daring to implore relief, oppress’d by base insulting foes: when, lo! from ocean’s trophied mansion come the Sons of Neptune to pronounce their doom. Led by a Warrior whose intrepid soul pure faith and daring courage sway, this band of brothers cuts the liquid way, a small determin’d band, their country’s pride, like purest gold by fiery dangers tried. With hope renew’d the Gallic navy rode, pleas’d to behold the Briton’s thin array courting the terrors of the vengeful day: beneath the weight deep groans the subject flood, and chief where mark’d as leader of the rest the giant Orient stood aloft confess’d.

Britannia’s Hero gives the dread command: obedient to his summons flames arise: the fierce explosion threats the skies and high in air the pond’rous mass is thrown. The dire concussion shakes the strand: Earth, Air, and Sea affrighted groan, the solid Pyramids attest the shock and their firm bases with the tremor rock. The Nile with wrecks o’erspread, the curling smoke, the captive banners seal the doom of haughty France and break her galling yoke. Eternal praise, great Nelson! to thy name and these immortal partners of thy fame! Aria Blest leader! foremost in renown of all whom rescued climes adore whose brows adorn the rostral crown, whose name resounds from shore to shore. Oh, may that crown long grace thy head, thy honored head with laurels twin’d! Thou by all sapient heav’n design’d kingdoms to free from servile dread. ‘Tis thine to guard thy country’s laws, and add new palms to Britain’s coast. Thine be the heartfelt just applause and thine of conscious worth the boast. Eternal praise, great Nelson! to thy name and these immortal partners of thy fame!
