Dear friends, Thank you for sharing this musical experience with us today. I am thrilled to return to Miami and to be working again with the incomparable artists of Seraphic Fire. I’m absolutely excited to present to you my dream program, In Her Own Voice, featuring music by twenty-two extraordinary women composers. Hildegard, Fanny, Clara, Judith, Tania, Reena, Vittoria... Go ahead and read their names out loud: it already sounds like music! Especially for those who know how long many of these talented women lived in the shadow of their male contemporaries, and how hard it still is to receive recognition and fame as a female composer. But today is not about gender or tradition, it’s about discovery of formidable artists with unique creative voices, daring techniques, and fascinating treatments of poetic lines. In Her Own Voice has been one of the most exciting musical and human journeys for me, and I know this is just the beginning. I hope you enter the concert with curiosity and leave with your heart filled with beauty and awe of all things creative! Elena Sharkova Guest Conductor

О Virdissima Virga
Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) O viridissima virga, ave, quein ventoso flabro sciscitationis sanctorum prodisti.
Hail! O greenest branch that went forth in the windy gusts of the saints’ discernment.
Cum venit tempus quod tu floruisti in ramis tuis, ave, avefuit tibi, quia calor solis in tesudavit sicut odor balsami.
When the time came for you to blossom on your branches, “Hail! Hail!” was said to you, because the heat of the sun produced sweat like the fragrance of balsam on you.
Nam in tefloruit pulcher flos qui odorem dedit omnibus aromatibus que arida erant.
For in you a beautiful flower bloomed, which gave scent to all the spices which were dry.
Et illa apparuerunt omnia in viriditate plena.
And they all appeared in full freshness.
Undeceli dederunt rorem super gramen et omnis terra leta facta est, quoniam viscera ipsius frumentum protulerunt et quoniam volucres celi nidos in ipsa habuerunt.
Whence the heavens poured dew over the grass and the whole earth was made happy since its womb produced grain and since the birds of the sky had nests on it.
Deindefacta estesca hominibus et gaudium magnum epulantium. Unde, o suavis Virgo, in te non deficit ullum gaudium.
From there food for humans was made, and the great joy of banqueters. Whence, o sweet Virgin, no joy is lacking in you.
Hec omnia Eva contempsit.
All these things Eve scorned.
Nunc autem laus sit Altissimo.
But now let there be praise to the Most High.

Surge, propera amica mea
Raffaella/Vittoria Aleotti (c. 1570-c. 1646) Arise, hasten dear one of mine, Beautiful one of mine, and come. Dove of mine in the clefts of the rock And the partitions. Show me your face, Let your voice repeat in my ears, For your voice is sweet, And your face is lovely.
Surge, propera amnica mea, Speciosa mea, et veni. Columba mea in foraminibus petrae In caverna maceriae. Ostende mihi faciem tuam. Sonet vox tua in auribus meis Vox enim tua dulcis, Et facies tua decora.
Abendfeier in Venedig (Evening Celebration in Venice) Clara Schumann (1819-1896) English translation © Richard Stokes
Ave Maria! Sea and sky are at rest, Bells ring out from all the towers. Ave Maria! Leave all earthly activity, Pray to the Virgin, to the Virgin’s Son! The angelic throng now is kneeling With lilies wrapped around their staves, And through the roseate clouds, the songs Of blessed spirits float ceremoniously down.
Ave Maria!
Regina Caeli
Cecilia McDowall (b. 1951) Alleluia. O Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia; Has risen, as He said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia.
Alleluia. Regina caeli, laetare, alleluia. Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia. Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia. Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.

Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, for Thou hast borne the Savior of our souls.
and the swallow
Caroline Shaw (b. 1982) How beloved is your dwelling place Oh, lord of hosts My soul yearns, faints my heart and my flesh cry out
the sparrow found a house, and the swallow, her nest, where she may raise her young They pass through the Valley of Bakka they make it a place of springs, the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
Song of Songs
Jessica Ulusoy-Horsley I. Solomon is come, Solomon is come – deck the columned hall! If the soul of the soul of the soul is come, it is not necessary to mention the soul. I, without love, was a wanderer – then suddenly Love entered.
By night on my bed, I sought him Whom my soul loveth, but I found him not. I will rise now, go about the city in the streets and in the broad ways, I will seek him who my soul loveth: I sought him but I found him not.
My beloved spake and said unto me, Rise up, come away, For lo, winter is past, The rain is over and gone The flowers appear on the earth; And the time of the singing of birds is come.
The speech is wind, O Listener – it distracts the heart But he commands it: gather that which is strewn! III. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, As a seal upon thine arm: For love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love, Neither can the floods drown it; Make haste my beloved!
II. Solomon knows the language of all birds. The speech is wind, O Listener — it distracts the heart…

My Guardian Angel Judith Weir (b. 1954)
Alleluia The Angel that presided o’er my birth Said, “Little Creature, form’d of Joy & Mirth, Go Love without the help of anything on earth.”
Lockung, Op. 3, No. 1
Dost thou hear the trees that rustle Through the soft and quiet air? Wouldst thou forth, with joy to wander, Now that night is still and fair? Where the many streamlets round thee Wondrous in the moonlight flow, While the silent hills look downward O’er the gleaming plain below.
Canst thou hear the songs entrancing, Known when bye-gone days were bright? Songs that wake once more to music, In the lonely woods at night, When the trees in slumber hearken, And the lilac’s scent is full; When the water-fairies whisper, Come to us, where waves are cool.

Selections from 3 Shakespearean Choruses, Op. 39 Amy Beach (1867-1944)
“Through the House Give Glimmering Light” Oberon Through the house give glimmering light, By the dead and drowsy fire; Every elf and fairy sprite Hop as light as bird from brier; And this ditty, after me, Sing and dance it trippingly. Titania First rehearse your song by rote, To each word a warbling note: Hand in hand, with fairy grace, Will we sing, and bless this place. “Come to the Yellow Sands” Come unto these yellow sands, And then take hands: Curtsied when you have and kissed, The wild waves whist, Foot it featly here and there; And, sweet sprites, the burthen bear. Tralala
grandmother moon
Eleanor Daley (b. 1955) She looks into and beyond my soul, the lacy cedar boughs creating her shadows, cedar ones weave design of midnight canvas. She looks into and beyond my soul. She, a powerful sacred hoop, a hoop of full light, simplicity against the ebony blues and blacks of night sky land, and crystal star people. She looks into and beyond my soul, her round face of translucent beauty and light quiet pow’rs speak out in her name... we’lalin.

“The Unexpected Early Hour” from A Winter Breviary Reena Esmail (b. 1983)
Horizon lights across my thoughts, Horizon lines redraw. Inside of my throat a rise of the gold Inside my chest I thaw.
Praise be! praise be! The dim, the dun, the dark withdraws Our recluse morning’s found. The river’s alive, the clearing provides Lie down, night sky, lie down.
Winter is, Winter ends, Nothing stays the same. The moon strikes high, The sun strikes high and Now I hear your name: Earth’s Untired Change. Praise be! praise be!
I feel the cold wind leaving, gone, I feel the frost’s relief. My tracks in the snow can still be erased In us, the sun believes. Winter is, Winter ends, So the true bird calls. The rocks cry out My bones cry out All the trees applaud. Ev’ry hard thing lauds. Lie down, night sky, lie down.
The unexpected early hour grows the good light long. Our darkness ends, O mercy sun, Trust can warm us all. Begin again, again, again, O may our day begin!
I know the seeding season comes, I know the ground will spring. My fate is not night, I don’t need to try Behold! The dawn, within.
Light of Late November Dale Trumbore (b. 1987)
Praise the light of late November, the thin sunlight that goes deep in the bones. Praise the crows chattering in the oak trees; though they are clothed in night, they do not despair. Praise what little there’s left: the small boats of milkweed pods, husks, hulls, shells, the architecture of trees. Praise the meadow of dried weeds: yarrow, goldenrod, chicory, the remains of summer. Praise the blue sky that hasn’t cracked yet. Praise the sun slipping down behind the beechnuts, praise the quilt of leaves that covers the grass: Scarlet Oak, Sweet Gum, Sugar Maple. Though darkness gathers, praise our crazy fallen world; it’s all we have, and it’s never enough.

be like the bird
Abbie Betinis (b. 1980) Be like the bird that, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her — and sings — knowing she hath wings.
“Pluck the fruit and taste the pleasure” from Songs of Youth and Pleasure Larsen
Pluck the fruit and taste the pleasure, Youthful lordings, of delight; Whilst occasion give you seizure, Feed your fancies and your sight: After death, when you are gone, Joy and pleasure is there none. Here on earth nothing is stable, Fortune’s changes well are known; Whilst as youth doth then enable, Let your seeds of joy be sown: After death, when you are gone, Joy and pleasure is there none.
Feast it freely with your lovers, Blithe and wanton sweets do fade; Whilst that lovely Cupid hovers Round about this lovely shade, Sport it freely one to one; After death is pleasure none. Now the pleasant spring allureth, And both place and time invites: Out, alas! what heart endureth To disclaim his sweet delights? After death, when you are gone, Joy and pleasure is there none.
“The Rights of Woman” from Speeches Anna-Karin Klockar (b. 1960)
Man, are you capable of being just? It is a woman who poses the question; you will not deprive her of that right at least. Tell me, what gives you sovereign empire to oppress my sex? Your strength? Your talents? Man alone has raised his exceptional circumstances to a principle. Bizarre, blind, bloated with science and degenerated - in a century of enlightenment and wisdom - into the crassest ignorance, he wants to command as a despot a sex which is in full possession of its intellectual faculties; he pretends to enjoy the Revolution and to claim his rights to equality in order to say nothing more about it.

“La Estrella” from Rimos Tropicales Tania León (b. 1943)
The Star Flies the night of fun excess On the back of a young steed; The night is the painter’s brush Which draws up a princess. When you wander in the night Look in the sky for the track Of the light of a bright star Shining like a fancy brooch. They will lighten your path Like little lamps in the dark. And no song will be more stark Than of the bird and its trill. The night is a little house With coral acting as walls: The sun drinks in the crystal bowl Of a shadow all too small.
(Spell): for Victory
Libby Larsen (b. 1950) I evoke the mighty spirit of Lady Victory. I evoke her mighty courage into my own soul.
I inhale the strong perfume of her presence. I offer her up my mighty goal.
Storm Comin’
The Wailin’ Jennys When that storm comes, don’t run for cover Don’t run from the coming storm, no there ain’t no use in running When that rain falls, let it wash away Let it wash away, that falling rain, the tears and the troubles When those lights flash, and you hear that thunder roar Will you listen to that thunder roar and let your spirits soar When that love calls, open up your door You gotta stand on up and let it in, you gotta let love through your door When that storm comes, don’t run for cover Don’t run from the coming storm, ‘cause it can’t keep a storm from coming

Stand In That River
Moira Smiley (b. 1976) I went to my river but my river was dry. The dust rose up to a darkened sky. Tell me, where is hope? Where do the waters run clear? I do not know my way from here. CHORUS Come and stand in that river, current gentle and slow! Send your troubles down water, down on that water flow. When you stand in that river, angels sing in your head. Secrets beyond every worry, dreams beyond every dread! CHORUS Tell me sister, brother, where does that river flow? It flows down to the great water, where soon my people will go. CHORUS Oh, time passes, passes on down the stream. Some days are so much sweeter. Some days, some pass like a dark dream, so… CHORUS

Wanting Memories
Ysaye M. Barnwell (b. 1946) I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me, To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes. You used to rock me in the cradle of your arms, You said you’d hold me ‘til the pains of life were gone. You said you’d comfort me in times like these, And now I need you, and you are gone. So, I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me, To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes. Since you’ve gone and left me, there’s been so little beauty, But I know I saw it clearly through your eyes. Now the world outside is such a cold and bitter place, Here inside I have few things that will console. And when I try to hear your voice above the storms of life, Then I remember that I was told. Yes, I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me, To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes.
I think on the things that made me feel so wonderful when I was young. I think on the things that made me laugh, made me dance, made me sing. I think on the things that made me grow into a being full of pride, Think on these things, for they are truth. And I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me, To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes. I thought you were gone, but now I know you’re with me, You are the voice that whispers all I need to hear. I know a “please”, a “thank you”, and a smile will take me far, I know that I am you, and you are me, and we are one, I know that who I am is numbered in each grain of sand, I know I’ve been blessed again, and over again. Yes, I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me, To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes.
