태극기의 탄생

역사의 격랑 속에서 태어나다 Birth of the flag: Born amid history’s tumult 1882–1904

1882년 미국 해군부 항해국이 제작한 『해양국가들의 깃발(Flags of Maritime Nations)』이라는 책에 실린 컬러 삽화. 19세기 말 조선이 문호를 개방하고 세계 열강과 수호조약을 맺으면서 조선을 상징하는 국기를 만들라는 고종의 명을 받아 역관 이응준이 만든 최초의 태극기 원형으로 추정됨.

This color illustration appeared in the 1882 edition of Flags of Maritime Nations, published by the US Department of the Navy’s Bureau of Navigation. The flag appears to be based on the first Korean flag, designed by interpreter Lee Eung-jun at the behest of King Gojong.

조선에 대한 지배권을 놓고 벌어진 청일전쟁(1894년-1895년)에서 승리한 일본이 자축을 위해 서울 근교에서 벌였던 개선행진을 왜곡해 묘사한 일본의 목판화. 당시 태극기와 함께 일장기를 크게 걸어 놓고 일본군이 개선행진을 했던 것은 사실이었으나 조선 관리들이 일본군을 환영한 사실은 없었다. 1895년 제작.

A Japanese woodblock print misleadingly depicting a victory parade conducted somewhere near Seoul by Japan to celebrate its victory in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). That the Japanese held a victory parade, and that both the Korean and Japanese flags were prominently displayed, are true enough, but Korean officials never welcomed the Japanese military, as depicted here.

조선의 부국강병을 위한 근대화 방안의 일환으로 1884년에 세운 우정총국(현재의 우정사업본부)이 업무를 개시하면서 만든 우리나라 최초의 우표. 당시 조선에는 우표 인쇄시설이 없어 일본에 태극기 모양의 도안을 의뢰했으나 중국식 태극이 인쇄되어 도착했다고 한다. 당시 화폐단위가 ‘문(文)’이어서 ‘문위우표’라 불림.

The stamps, printed by the Japanese as Korea lacked the proper facilities at the time, had a Chinesestyle yin-yang symbol rather than a Korean one.

갑신정변 이후 중단되었던 우정사업이 10년만에 재개되면서 1895년에 제작된 우표. 미국에 의뢰해 제작했으며 태극기 도안으로 만들어져 ‘태극우표’라 불림. 왼쪽 이미지는 가장 낮은 액면가인 5푼 우표, 오른쪽 이미지는 가장 높은 액면가인 50푼 우표.

1900년 12월 프랑스 화보일간지 「르 쁘띠 주르날(Le Petit Journal)」에 실린 파리만국박람회 한국관의 전경. 경복궁 근정전을 축소해서 만들었다. 비단, 자개장, 국악기 등 수공예품을 중심으로 서적, 미술품들까지 전시해 조선 문화의 섬세함과 우수성을 유럽인들에게 보여주었으며, 대한제국이 자주독립국임을 서구 열강들에게 널리 알렸다.

세계 독립국가 간의 빈번한 교류와 인쇄술의 급속한 발전 덕에 19세기말 이후 전 세계에는 각국의 국기와 황제 또는 시민의 모습을 담은 백과사전이나 상품카드가 크게 유행했다. 1900년경 미국의 ‘엘 밀러 앤 선즈(L. Miller & Sons)’사가 자사의 담배 홍보를 위해 발행한 ‘세계의 통치자들’ 카드 시리즈. 고종의 초상화와 태극기가 그려져 있다. 그러나 미국 현지에서 정확한 정보 없이 제작한 것이라 실제 고종의 모습과는 차이가 있다. 고종의 실제 이름 ‘이희’가 적혀 있는 것이 특이하다.

This trade card featuring King Gojong was part of a series of cards depicting world leaders printed by American cigarette maker L. Miller & Sons. The card rather unusually uses Gojong’s actual name rather than his regnal name.

Some companies incorporated the simple-yet-profound yin-yang symbol into their own trademarks.

The best-known one to do so was the Northern Pacific Railroad on the United States. This promotional article, which appeared in a 1901 edition of American illustrated magazine Collier’s Weekly.

태극기는 미국이나 유럽에서 열린 대규모 박람회를 통해 전 세계에 알려졌으며, 단순하면서도 심오한 태극 디자인에 매료되어 태극기를 자사의 상표에 도입한 기업들도 있었다. 그 중에서 대표적인 곳이 미국의 ‘ 북태평양철도회사(Northern Pacific Railway)’였다. 1901년 미국의 화보주간지 「 콜리어스 위클리(Collier’s Weekly)」에 실린 상표디자인 홍보 기사. 태극을 디자인에 도입한 새 상표가 동서양의 조화를 이루고 있음을 홍보하고 있다.

1900년대 일본의 성냥 공장들은 태극기를 상표에 도입해 제작한 후 한반도에 판매했다. 단순히 태극기를 자사의 마스코트 혹은 기업명과 함께 디자인한 경우도 있었고, 대한제국의 주요 상징물과 일장기를 함께 디자인한 경우도 있었다. 위는 일본 ‘코이즈미(小泉)’사에서 태극기만을 사용해 제작한 성냥상표이고 아래는 남대문을 배경으로 태극기와 일본의 욱일승천기를 교차해 게양한 성냥상표이다. ★최초 공개 자료

In the 1900s, Japanese match factories sold their wares in Korea after affixing the Korean flag to their trademarks. The top image, a matchbox by Japanese matchmaker Koizumi, uses only the Korean flag.

The bottom image is a matchbox featuring the Korean flag and Japan’s Rising Sun flag against a backdrop of Namdaemun Gate.

A 1904 French board game introducing the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). It includes not only the flag of Korea but also those of some of the countries waging an intense rivalry in the region at the time, including Qing Dynasty China, Japan, Russia, France, and Germany.

개화기의 대표적 서양식 호텔 ‘애스터 하우스 호텔’의 수하물표. 이 호텔은 1901년 영국인이 개업한 호텔로 당시 활동사진 상영장으로 유명했다. 뿐만 아니라 「대한매일신보」의 사장이자 대한제국의 입장에서 일본에 항거한 영국 언론인 어네스트 베델의 주요 활동장소이자 그가 숨을 거둔 곳이기도 하다. ★최초 공개 자료

A baggage check tag of the Astor House Hotel, a leading Western-style hotel in Seoul in the early twentieth century. Founded by a Briton in 1901, the hotel was well-known at the time as a place where early motion pictures were screened. It was also where British journalist and Korean independence activist Ernest Bethell worked and died.

1904년 ‘순례자’라는 뜻을 가진 프랑스 화보주간지 「르 페를렝(Le Pelerin)」에 게재된 대한제국의 모습. 고종 황제와 당시 황태자였던 순종의 모습과 그들이 머물던 황궁인 경운궁 (현 덕수궁)의 풍경, 나라의 상징인 태극기와 이화문양이 삽화로 제작되어 실렸다. 궁궐의 하단에는 ‘대한제국’이라고 추정되는 한글도 표기되어 있다.

프랑스 초콜릿 회사 중의 하나인 ‘쇼콜라 플랭 (Chocolat Poulain)’에서 1900년대 초에 제작한 광고용 상품카드 시리즈. 대한제국 시기의 우편배달 광경과 함께 태극기, 대한제국 최초의 우표인 문위우표를 소개하고 있다. 당시 프랑스에서 만들어진 거의 모든 상품광고 카드는 1892년 프랑스의 화보잡지 「뚜르드몽드(Tour de Monde)」에 실린 조선시대 밀양의 풍경을 응용해서 만들어졌기 때문에 실제 한반도 풍경, 한국인의 모습과는 차이가 있다.

This trade card was part of a series produced in the early 1900s by French chocolate maker Chocolat Poulain.

Depicting the Daehan Empire’s postal delivery service, the card also shows the Korean flag and Korea’s first postal stamp.

고종은 1897년 근대국가의 체계를 갖춘 대한제국을 건립해 한반도가 자주국가임을 천명했다. 1900년대 초 대한제국의 상징물들로 제작된 엽서. 근대화된 복식과 훈장을 착용하고 있는 고종 황제의 어진을 태극기와 이화문양을 넣어 디자인했다. ★최초 공개 자료 This is a postcard
