Triangular 1. process-book for exploring the new forms and usages of objects

This process book aims to understand everyday objects in our lives.

By re-assemble the objects, it gives different usages or imagination of the form. Furthermore, it derives to think about interactions of human and objects.

It started unfamiliar usage of objects. It brings curiosity and unfamiliar usage of objects. New ways of thinking, new perspectives, new habits, New ideas, New solutions. Some objects can be found feasibility in real life, or be promoted your inspiration.

There are many following questions in this project.

How can I dissect the materialities of objects? ● What happens can I see, when ‘things’ are changed their properties each other? ● What is the best medium to explain the project? ●

Is there any way to test that how human can interact or interpret with the new forms? ● What is my design position?

(1.Q)

To understand the objects, I defined various properties of Book instead of defining all of the things. This classification helps to look at different layers and guide to combine two different objects.

I divided objects into four features. Form, Function&Interaction, and Context. Then, I explored by mixing the features, or using in different medium.

‘It turns out that thinking about how objects interact with human subjects, and how they change, reconfigure, and refashion each other enriches how we designers experience our perpetual dance with the things and objects in our orbits’.

All of the visual appearance, shape, size, colours, texture, material, the configuration of an object, categories of bound, visual code of the contents.

● Function

An object can have various functions. For instance, Books have more functions rather than being read ‘just’ for enjoyment. Any books could also be considered a 'tool' which is address books, albums, manuals, and notebooks.

● Form and Function

Objects interact with people. The ways of interaction and interpretation can change based on the form. But the form followed the function. That means if the function is changed, It allows to think about different function.

I divided general forms based on functional properties. (1) Container: Keep different components. (2) Extract: Opposite side of the container's function like Pouring. (3) Handle: change the movement of the materials by rotating, grabbing, press (4) Supporter: support different components like legs.

I browsed C4D free-product archives where are people share their modellings. This objects designed based on real objects' structures. I made different layers and explored these objects in the virtual world how they can be combined.

Form in three-dimensional space

The objects interpret in different context. Time, space(Form of library), nationality, level of education, personal character, race, cultural aspects(The ways of reading), history, technology(Ebook), symbolic way(Icon).

(2. Relocation)

I used different medium to implement combination of objects. I drew flat images at the first time, and took photos with the same idea. Although the idea was similar, I could compared the effect that which one is more delivery or can combined well.

I combined two different digital forms in a technology context instead of exploring physical properties.

By integrating Youtube + Ebook, I questioned 'How can people communicate when they are reading books simultaneously like Youtube?'. Reading books are private, personal area except to social book club. Youtube is the opposite notion. It needs to share, communicate together.

IKEA used fully-CGI for making product images, labels, and the catalogue over traditional photography. The 3D products and rooms in the catalogue show how the products generate narratives in a specific purpose.

(3. Mini-Catalogue as relocation)

I created 3D-imagination products by mixing different forms and functions. With the product description, it connected between reality and illusion.

Functions can not be measured, and it is a possibility between the product and life. When Charles Yeames designed his chair, he did not really design a chair, but designed a sitting posture. In other words, he designed a function, designed for a function. He believes that function is not a physiological or physical system but a culture system. Designer’s responsibility is not to achieve function but to discovery the function. “Design is a positive, human behavior modification method.”

Position

I believe that graphic design can deconstruct visual codes and thereby make people aware of and question established structures. This design process also leads a designer to remake and reinterpret the context by decomposing features in different layers.

Keyword

De-construction, Re-assembly, New narratives, Imagination.

Method / Medium

Dissecting and Re-combining objects give different narratives. It can become each individual imagination or reality.

By iterating the same questions in different media such as drawing, photography, and 3D. I could compare the feasibility which can be more narratives and reality.

(42) (43) (4. Reflextion)

Exploring three-dimensional space and objects. Making new imagination spaces with re-assembled objects. Although I use the same objects, It can have different narratives in a specific environment.

Interactive space to understand the form/function. By making an interactive site which provides various visual components such as handle, legs, and hole. People can combine by themselves and understand how the objects shaped and functioned.
