Project Details Project Name: 12, Harrowdene Road, Wembley, UK Project Description: Client - Mr Rajipal Singh Project size - 136.7sqm Type of building contract - Unknown Design team - Project architect, planning consultant, architectural technician & myself Current work stage - 1 to 3 Brief description - The practice were instructed to design an additional floor to the existing property at no. 12 Harrowdene Rd. This was a scheme completed by the practice in 2019. An application was initially lodged for an additional floor and refused, however changes to the surrounding site and planning policy meant that the additional floor was now more likely to be approved. .

Project Tasks: Assist with the initial design for the additional floor. Firstly I discussed the scheme with my mentor and the planning consultant and reviewed the councils policies and guidance to ascertain any planning constraints and implications to the design, following this initial overview of the design I : Produced the initial sketch plans and elevations for discussion Developed the initial drawings to submit as a full planning application Produced the design and access statement to accompany the planning application

Project Description: Client name - Prime Homes Type of contract - Unknown Design team - Project architect, Part 2 Architectural Assistant & myself Project size - 1,611 sqm Work stage - 3 Brief description- The site currently has a block of apartments. There was a previously refused scheme for more residential flats in the rear garden undertaken by a previous architect, After the pandemic, the client came to our practice to formulate and proposal wich the council would find acceptable. Given the new demand for working from home my mentor suggested that installing work from home units (rentable to the existing tenants and a gym would be beneficial for the tenants and acceptable to the council.

Project Tasks: Drawings - CAD plans at 1:100 (ground floor and basement).

Helped with the development of the proposal plans to include 1. the work from home units 2. the gym area 3. the general integration with the site and the overall site plan.

Brief description - The site was newly acquired by the client, and the company is to design 7 contemporary barn style houses for the client.

Project Tasks: Helped with the site plan, ground floor plans, first floor plans, roof plans & elevations. overlaid information from the arboroculturist and revised to site plans accordingly, Designed the parking layout including concealed parking spaces for the 4bed barns. Participated in several online meetings with the client and project architect to discuss the design.

I took notes and reflected on these meetings with my mentor after to devise solutions to the points raised

Project Tasks: Drew up the exiting drawings based on a initial survey by external technician. Helped to develop the initial plans and options for the proposed extensions demonstrated by both floor plans & elevations. This included an roof extension and dormer which required several sections to demonstrate the head room. Produced detailed street elevations showing the context. Communicated with the client over email regarding changes to the design as well as details about the planning application. Filled out and submitted the planning application. Helped with the preparation of the fire safety strategy and the design & access statement. Filled out a CIL form and submitted all the needed documents to the planning portal. Emailed the case officer of the Richmond Council regarding the progress of the planning application. Submitted further phots of the site to help demonstrate the nature of the site and relationship with the neighbours. The application is still live

Stage 1 Experience

Reflective experience summary Task performance & learning during this period of experience: Given the tasks undertaken, I have learned several new skills that are required when working under a practice. These include filling out planning applications, CIL forms and naming applications on various council websites and the planning portal, and keeping in touch with the various case officers in charge for each project. The surveys done on site visits and emails sent to and fro from clients helped with developing my inter-personal skills. The site visits also included meeting contractors and that helped me recognise things from their point of view. The Design and Access statements, pre application, and fire strategy documents were all new to me and taught me alot about the different sides to each project. My skills in AutoCad have also improved since I first joined.

Personal development & role performance evaluation: It certainly took a while for me to get used to work life and working on multiple projects at the same time, but that's also what kept it interesting. I enjoyed the site surveys alot as it included meeting new people and improving my network. The most challenging parts for me are mostly the more detailed and technical drawings which I hope to improve on during my year out.

Aims for next period of experience: As mentioned previously, I would hope to get better at the more detailed side of projects and improve my knowledge on it. I would still like to continue with site visits, drafting plans, filling out planning and other related applications.

Further skills needed and actions to take to achieve aims: I would like to develop my academic knowledge and this was done during the term when the company went for the London Building Expo, and we met with people from various aspects of the construction industry and listened to a lecture on the Future of Building Construction.

Additional student comments, support required from placement provider: The company has had a few activities outside of the workplace as a social and team building experience, thus developing a healthy work experience. The site visits and other lectures etc. attended have also helped broaden my view on architecture.

Although I have enjoyed the design work I have been given I have also enjoyed the challenge of many other office m/management tasks of which there are many. Being familiarised with the RIBA work stages 0 to 3 and have a solid understanding of these will help me when i progress to the subsequent stages

Preparation for next 3 months/period of experience: Continuation of the existing projects and a CPD in January on The Importance of Ventilation in Lead Roofing
