But less than a month before St. Patrick's Day, a code enforcement officer turned up and told them they had 24 hours to take the Irish one down: a local ordinance banned the commercial use of foreign flags. "We were just shocked and kind of sad that we couldn't hang the flag," said Aine Culhane; Michelle Culhane said it was an insult. Product testing: Police in Danville, Va., were summoned to a convenience store on a report of a drunk man behind the wheel of a vehicle sitting in the parking lot. "He was also drinking from an open container," said a police spokesman. "The officer approached him and detected a strong odor of alcohol as well as normal indications of being intoxicated." Steven Ray Tickle, 35, was cited for public intoxication and, when he couldn't name anyone who could pick him up, was arrested. Tickle is best known as a character on the Discovery Channel "reality" TV show "Moonshiners". (RC/Raleigh Telegram) ...Apparently it's against the rules for the camera crew to give him a ride home. Heads up: A a r o n Williams, 25, went to the Dayton, N.J., Motor Vehicle Commission to renew his driver's license. When it came time to take his photo, he refused to remove his head covering. MVC employees explained that it must be removed unless it's being worn for religious reasons. Williams insisted that it was, and wouldn't take it off. "I take it as seriously as anybody else when it comes to religious beliefs," he said. When he took out his camera and started taking a video of the employees, they called the police. Officers told Williams he had to apply to the state before he'd be allowed to wear the headgear for his photo, and Williams removed it. The head covering in question: a spaghetti strainer. Williams says he's a Pastafarian -a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which is a movement opposing teaching "intelligent design" and creationism in schools. Lithuania Part 2 Between 1868 and 1914, approximately 635,000 people, almost 20% of the population, emigrated from Lithuania. Large numbers went to the US in 1867–1868 During World War I, In 1918 Lithuania declared independence and the re-establishment of the Lithuanian State. Lithuania's foreign policy was dominated by territorial disputes with Poland and Germany. The Vilnius Region, and Vilnius, the historical capital of Lithuania, was seized by the Polish army in October 1920 and annexed two years later by Poland. For 19 years Kaunas became the Temporary capital of Lithuania. The Polish occupation of Vilnius was greatly resented there were no diplomatic relations between the two states for most of the period between the two world wars. The Soviet Union returned Vilnius to Lithuania after the Soviet invasion of Eastern Poland in September 1939. In June 1940, the Soviet Union occupied and annexed Lithuania .A year later the Soviet Union was attacked by Nazi Germany, leading to the Nazi occupation of Lithuania.
The Nazis and their collaborators murdered around 190,000 Lithuanian Jews(91% of the pre-war Jewish community) during the Holocaust. After the retreat of the German armed forces, the Soviets re-established the annexation of Lithuania in 1944. Under border changes promulgated at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the former German Memelland, was again transferred to Lithuania, or as it was after 1945 the Lithuanian SSR. Most German residents of the area had fled in the final months of World War II. The Soviets engaged in massive deportations of Lithuanian s to Siberia,complete nationalisation and collectivisation and general sovietization of everyday life. From 1944 to 1952 approximately 100,000 Lithuanian partisans fought a guerilla war against the Soviet system. An estimated 30,000 partisans and their supporters were killed, and many more were arrested and deported to Siberian gulags. It is estimated that Lithuania lost 780,000 people during World War II. The advent of perestroika and glasnost in the late 1980s allowed the establishment of Sąjūdis, an anti-communist independence movement. After a landslide victory in elections to the Supreme Soviet, members of Sąjūdis proclaimed Lithuania's independence on 11 March 1990, becoming the first Soviet republic to do so. The Soviet Union attempted to suppress the secession by imposing
an economic blockade. Soviet troops attacked the Vilnius TV Tower, killing 14 Lithuanian civilians and wounding 600 others on the night of 13 January 1991. On 31 July 1991 Soviet paramilitaries killed seven Lithuanian border guards on the Belarusian border in what became known as theMedininkai Massacre. On 11 March 1990, the year before the break-up of the Soviet Union, Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare independence. On 4 February 1991, Iceland became the first country to recognise Lithuanian independence. The last Soviet troops left Lithuania on 31 August 1993 – even earlier than they departed from East Germany. Lithuania, seeking closer ties with the West, applied for NATO membership in 1994. After a transition from a planned economy to a free market one, Lithuania became a full member of NATO and the European Union in the spring of 2004 and a member of the Schengen Agreement on 21 December 2007. Prior to the global financial crisis of 2007–2010 and now in its aftermath, Lithuania has one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union. The United Nations Human Development Index lists Lithuania as a "Very High Human Development" country. Lithuania will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2013.
Welcome to Otelli: Fiona and Mike are an English - Dutch combination and where many bars and restaurants only have English or Dutch clients they are proud to have many different nationalities on their terrace. Otelli is a nice and cosy family run restaurant with a large base of returning customers. Great for a night out. The ever popular Friday theme night´s,which often means a special menu and live music. They have a very varied menu with something for everyone. The restaurant is in a great location and the atmosphere is very friendly. I personally recommend the secret salad dressing which Fiona says you can buy to take home. So I had to ask How did it all begin? It all started five years ago when our best Danish friend Lisa came to our restaurant. Always smiling, in a good mood and talking
to everybody on the terrace. She translated the menu for Scandinavian customers, gave them a warm welcome and introduced the people to each other. Slowly we became the Scandinavian meeting place in Arroyo. Based then in Fountain Square.Two years ago we moved to a bigger premises with more possibilities. We created a photo wall and translated the menu into Danish. Now you find, alongside our normal menu, Scandinavian dishes.People are proud to bring souvenirs to our restaurant to give it an international feel. (We are looking forward to some Norwegian and Finnish gadgets.)When it´s busy we are proud to hear Spanish, English, Dutch, German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian on our terrace and when we can´t understand it must be Finnish! As we all emerge from hibernation and start to shed the layers of winter clothes, the time has come to give our bodies some TLC. This all starts with eating “feel good “ food, nice light lunches after all the heavy winter dishes. Here we have a couple of light lunch recipes, low in fat and calorie counted. SPINACH AND FETA FRITTATA
This recipe is gluten-free, nut free and suitable for diabetics. I’ve bought feta cheese from Lidl and Iceland.
Ingredients
Serves 4 260 cals per portion 1 tbsp lemon juice 3 tbsp olive oil 3 finely sliced spring onions 3 ripe tomatoes, blanched, de seeded and diced 200g leeks, finely sliced 125g fresh chopped spinach 6 large eggs 4 tbsp skimmed milk Freshly grated nutmeg 125g feta cheese, diced Fresh basil
For the dressing, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, spring onions, and the diced tomatoes. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Bring a small pan of lightly salted water to the boil and blanch the sliced leeks for 2 mins, drain and dry on kitchen paper.
Whisk together the eggs, milk, seasoning, spinach, nutmeg and the feta cheese.
Heat a little oil in a non stick frying pan, pour in the mix, cook gently until set, finish under the grill, To serve, garnish with the tomato and basil dressing.

Alfarnate is one of the villages on the Route of Oil and Mountains and can be found in the far Northwest of the Axarquia at a height of 925 metres and although as villages go its almost completely flat its surrounded by the rugged mountains of Jobo, Palomera and Enmedio which tower majestically above the green valley filled with olive and cherry trees. Dominating the landscape are craggy grey rocks dotted with scattered trees perilously clinging between mosses and ferns. Mighty oaks and pines vie for attention below the hills of Puerto de los Alhazores and Puerto del Sol, natural steps that connect this area with its surroundings.
Overlooked by the Cerro del Santo Cristo mountain, where outdoor mass is sometimes held at the sanctuary on top, the village is unique in its layout with three bridges straddling the Palancar stream. On one side is the Ermita de la Virgen de Monsalud, located in the upper quarter, a sixteenth century building with 3 arches mimicking the bridges and on the other side the Iglesia de Santa Ana,
The Ayuntamiento was also built in the 16th century with its ubiquitous 3 arches dominating its facade.
Before leaving the area be sure to stop for a repast at La Antigua Venta de Alfarnate, a fully restored, 17th century inn, steeped in history, situated at the cross roads 2 kilometres from the village. As you are led behind the bar to be seated in the restaurant you can take a photo of the famous bandolero Luis Candelas in his prison cell, sitting with his head on his hand he seems to be reflecting on his misspent youth which ended on November 6th 1837 when he was garrotted at the age of 33.
To drive to Alfarnate turn off the Colmenar to Velez-Malaga road (A356) at the Rio Gordo to Periana junction and drive in the direction of Periana (A7204) turn left for Alfarnatejo and continue up to Alfarnate (MA4102). The nicest way to return is towards Periana (MA4103) where the road winds its way down with spectacular views of the mountains, lake and distant coast.

Katy Perry might have previously been BFFs with Rihanna but she seems to have moved on to some new showbiz friends - Kristen Stewart and Selena Gomez. Katy, 28, and Kristen, 22, attended the Awards in LA together and spent the evening laughing and joking along with former Disney starlet Selena, 20. The girls posed for a cute picture together, with Kristen sitting on Katy's knee, and they were also snapped stroking pregnant singer Fergie's baby bump. All three ladies have had very public relationship dramas lately - Katy reportedly split from singer John Mayer last week while Selena's relationship with Justin Bieber ended earlier this year. And Kristen's on-off romance with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson continues following their night out in LA together last week. Need Money! Need work! I had some amazing and fun times during my 10 years in business (I had my own small catering business and worked from home) It’s hard to believe that I didn’t start that adventure (the business) until I was in my late 40’s. I could not believe how easy and rewarding it all was and wondered why! I had not done it years earlier; a nudge to anyone who is getting on in years, (don’t give up your dreams) As a devoted wife and mother I had wanted to give my family the best years of my life so to speak, be there to take and pick up from school, enjoy all the plays assemblies sports days...you get the picture. Wonderful years which I thoroughly enjoyed (I would not change a thing) So in my fifties I found myself working very hard despite still having a large home complete with teenager, friends and football!! In 2010 I was nearing retirement at 60 (passing on a lucrative catering contract to another caterer) and wondering how we would cope (financially) our teenager (now at university) was a few months from finishing his course, which we were still funding. I am sure many people can relate to similar circumstances, you buy a ‘new house’ then you’re made redundant; or take out a credit agreement and immediately become sick and can’t work or make the repayments, where will the money come from? I know as a Christian that to trust God during those difficult times is not easy, but it works! The Bible says do not be worried or anxious about anything, but in every situation ‘give thanks’ make all your requests known to God, always asking with a thankful heart; and so that is what I did. I put away all those pots and pans and relaxed into retirement. Well!... for at least two days. I was browsing through the local paper when I spotted an advert; a person was needed to run a tea room for three months (the amount of time the youngest had left at university) I called and was given a date for an interview.Well great person of faith that I am I was thinking some very negative thoughts on my drive to the appointment, (who will employ an over 60 pensioner?) However as I entered the ‘cafe’ their radio was playing a song ‘I believe in Miracles’. Wow!! As I drove home I reflected...I will need a miracle who is going to employ a pensioner; I was still being very negative and definitely (not trusting God)
A few days later I received a phone call, I got the job (why did I doubt?) and the rest as the saying goes is ‘history’ the extra money covered all the necessary costs. God is good. Angie

Saint George was born to a Greek Christian noble family. He lost both his parents when he was only in his teens. Following this he signed up to be a soldier and spent the next few years being sent on travelling missions.
It was during this time when he made his name as a dragon slayer. According to the legend a dragon made it's nest at the spring that provided water for a city in the Holy Land. he citizens had to dislodge the dragon from it's nest every time they wanted to collect water. Each time they had to offer the dragon a sheep, but if no sheep could be found then a maiden had to go in place of the sheep. The victim was chosen by drawing lots. One day this happened to be the princess. The monarch begged for her to be spared but it was no use.
The maiden was offered to the dragon as Saint George was passing by on his travels. He faced the dragon, protecting himself with the sign of the cross. He slayed the dragon and rescued the Princess. The Citizens abandoned their pagan beliefs and converted to christianity.
When he returned at the age of 20 he was stationed as an Imperial Guard of the Emperor. The emperor later decided that all Christian soldiers should be arrested and either offer a sacrifice to the Roman Gods or be executed. George loudly renounced this decision and declared his belief in Jesus Christ. The Emperor tried to convert George with offerings of Land, money and slaves but George refused all. Eventually the Emperor declared that George must be executed. George prepared for this by giving his wealth to the poor. After several torture sessions George was finally executed by decapitation on April 23rd, 303.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION The Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion held its annual Photographic Competition at the Miralmonte Bar and Restaurant on Wednesday the 20th of March. The theme was Coin and submissions were judged in 2 categories: Category 1 was open to branch members not in the photographic group and Category 2 was open to photographic group members. Category 1 was won by Thelma Allwood and Category 2 was won by Rosie Brown. Chairman Jo Taylor thanked everyone for submitting photographs of such a high standard and awarded the Chairman’s choice trophy to Catherine Graham.
GETTING THE CORRECT ADVICE Age Care Association hosted a visit from the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept this week at their Advice Centre in Doña Lola, Calahonda. Anette Skou, coordinator of the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept visited the newly opened Advice Centre to give a presentation on some of the information available from them and to update Claudia Langer, Manager and her team of volunteers. Anette is originally from Denmark and has been with the Foreigners’ Dept since 1985, so she has plenty of experience to pass on! It was very informative and clarified some of the misconceptions which abound about the rules and regulations for ex pats living in the sunshine. As an example, she explained how to get on to the Padrón, the importance of doing so and the benefits in general.
As the aim of the Age Care Advice Centre is to be a one-stop-shop for information, particularly for the older local community on the Costa del Sol, this was a good way of starting with a firm foundation of correct information to counteract the rumours and misinformation that circulate. Anette also advised about the many events run by the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept throughout the year including Friendship Days and the Blues Festival in July.
Claudia is delighted that the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept is supporting the Age Care Advice Centre and said that she was looking forward to working with them in the future to the benefit of the older local community. The Advice Centre is located at Doña Lola, Calahonda, next to Oscar’s Bar and on the Bus 220 route. It is open Monday to Friday, 10-2 pm and everyone is welcome.
Age Care Association’s AGM Age Care Association’s Annual General Meeting was held recently at the Tamisa Golf Hotel. The meeting comprised of a report from the President, a presentation of the 2012 financial year accounts by the Treasurer and elections of Officers. In his President’s Report, John Greaves welcomed everyone saying how wonderful it was to see so many volunteers present. After highlighting the main events of the previous year, he said that facing the future,"Age Care must not remain static" and suggested projects for 2013 of reintroducing Carers' Meetings, opening a new Drop In Centre in La Cala and expanding our client base by regular advertising in local bars & restaurants, Health Centres and Doctors’ Offices. Tony Bellamy presented the accounts after which elections were held. The following Officers were elected: President - Tony Bellamy Vice President - Beverley Morland Treasurer - John Greaves Maurice Featherman resigned as Vice President due to ill-health. Maurice has been a member of the Executive Committee for over 11 years and was the Welfare Leader for Fuengirola. John Greaves thanked him for all the work he had done for Age Care and wished him well for his move to the UK. This year's Annual General Meeting was a huge success, with over 40 people attending, including volunteers from Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Calahonda, and Age Care's Patron, Bruce Macintyre, MBE. Following the meeting John Greaves commented that he hoped that those attending the AGM had found it to be informative and enjoyable, and thanked all the volunteers for their hard work. Vodka Blues 2012 Darwin Award Nominee Confirmed True by Darwin (10 April 2012) Washing trucks for a living is not a prestigious job but it does have perks, particularly for those who wash trucks for Beer Stores, a Canadian liquor store chain. The discovery of an onboard bottle of liquor can be considered a tipple-tip, can it not? And swigging free booze surely does make a menial job easier to swallow. Which brings us to the deceased. Behind the driver's seat of a Beer Store truck, he discovered a vodka bottle full of blue liquid! Whether the deceased would have swallowed the liquid if it had been a suspicious shade of yellow, I do not know, but a suspicous shade of blue was deemed palatable. A GIANT FISH BY ANY OTHER NAME One of the most fascinating spectacles to greet scuba divers on the southern Spanish coast comes in the form of a marine species that – if it actually had a brain bigger than a peanut – would probably develop a serious case of identity crisis.

Of course here in Spain at least some sense prevails and the biggest bony fish in the world is called “Pez Luna” (Moonfish), probably the most pleasant of the monikers and closest to what us English speakers call the “Ocean Sunfish”. Its common name comes from its habit of lying flat on the surface of the ocean appearing to catch the warmth of the sun’s rays. This thermal recharging is thought to be essential after deep dives to hundreds of very chilly metres and it’s while sunbathing that it’s most often spotted by us divers. “Sunfish” is actually used to describe the entire marine family Molidae, while its Latin name Mola Mola translates literally as millstone
Perhaps more remarkable is the fact that if it lives to adulthood, a Sunfish can gain over 60 million times its birth weight: the equivalent, says the National Geographic, of a healthy, bouncing baby growing to the size of six Titanics!
Despite their brain being literally the size of a peanut, weighing in at 4g, the Sunfish has entered the Guinness Book of Records as one of the most fecund vertebrates in the world, with a 1.5 metre female recorded as having an estimated 300 million eggs.
Despite this overwhelming productivity, they’re very vulnerable to fishermen’s nets, getting caught in huge numbers as they laze on the surface. Another hazard is the dreaded plastic bag, that appears to a mola like a jellyfish.
Thankfully their numbers seem to be healthy here on the coast, with Simply Diving staff recording record numbers of sightings in 2012.

Alan Ayckbourn has created a parallel universe in which one living room stands in for two households, two front door bells ring at once, two wives prepare for two dinner parties at the same time, at the same table.
In this suburban trio of married couples, one couple is at the top of the social ladder. One of the other couples is attractive and upcoming, despite the fact that she is an utter slob and he is a boor; and the third pair is socially hopeless but earnest.
Add to this Ayckbourn's trademarks - bored suburban couples, infidelity, rivalry, and a touch of violence and you have all the elements for a truly wonderful evening’s entertainment.
