Aurora state Rep. Iman Jodeh sees the push for peace in Gaza as an extension of pushing for a better life for everyone

Without warning, I’m
the
punch line for the oldest joke in the world
Iaccidentally turned 65. I never intended this to happen.
Like so many Americans, I never planned on it and was among so many who thought it could never actually happen to them.
The end of my denial struck like a train on Flag Day this year, a birthday I share with Donald Trump.
My first conclusion about this awkward milestone is that it doesn’t seem to hurt — yet — as bad as I figured it surely would.
Relieved, I seem to be the same ol’ Dave, but not that old.

I distinctly remember thinking, often, as a child, then as an adolescent, then as a young adult, and then as a middle-aged dad and — I’ll stop there. But I remember on several occasions watching my aging grandparents, great aunts and neighbors seem to just exude a catalog of horrible things that happen to humans as they age.
They all seemed to move so slowly, all the time. Half of them couldn’t hear. The other half couldn’t see to read or anything farther than the length of their arms. They all seemed to noise issues. None of them had any interest in watching Gigantor cartoons or eating Pez tablets from between the cushions on the couch.
They were pretty boring.
They did all seem to like sitting, riding in a car and talking about what they ate, what they might eat and what they would like to eat.
I don’t move slowly. Well, most of the time. Well, some of the time.
We have a security camera in our backyard, because it’s good to know when a gang of armed, demonic assassins are headed for the back door. All we’ve mostly seen in the camera are a few demonic raccoons and a lot of wind.
But one night, I came home late from work and was alerted shortly after by my handy backyard-camera-iPhone-security alert.
After a few moments of fumbling with my phone and struggling to remember how to work it, a video clip appeared of this really creepy hunchback thing kind of limp-shuffled right across my back yard, headed for the back door.
It not only set off the motion detector, but the sound-alert system, too. Whatever it was, it was fat and hunched over and making this awful wheezing puffing sound as it mumbled something unintelligible, ending with this very sad and pathetic groan and — oh. It was me.
It was the same guy I see reflected in my car windows while I fumble with the door locks.
I look like my father. I jingle my keys like my father. I sing parts of old tunes like my father. Well, I have much more sophisticated musical taste than did my dad.
He would forever be humming bars from, “I’ve got a lov-er-ly bunch of coco-nuts...”
I, on the other hand, haunt the room with classics such as the opening theme from “HR Puffinstuff” or any number of masterpieces from “Gilligan’s Island.”
I’m pretty sure that everybody in the newsroom appreciates it. Although, since my tinnitus has taken on a pitch and volume close to a million cicadas in a hot garage, I can’t exactly hear their approvals, or really much of anything.
I can still see tho, at least out of my good eye.
Several years back I awoke blind in my right eye without any symptoms or warning. One of my fancy specialist kind of doctors said it was an injury-provoked cataract.
He said I was certainly hit in the eye the previous day, but I don’t remember it. I joked with my wife that she must have hit me in the face while I slept in an effort to stop what she thinks is my snoring, but I don’t snore.
I think she suffers from female tinnitus, which strikes women at night and sounds like really loud snoring.
Whatever it was, all I could see was faint fuzzy light. I was too busy at work and too much a coward to get my eye sliced open and a fake lens put in. So I waited a year or so, endlessly mis-aiming through doors and overfilling my coffee cup, until I tried to ski between two trees on a steep mountain and didn’t see the second tree in my blind spot.
It’s all good now, except for when I’m driving into the sun and the light reflects off my fake eyeball lens and makes me sneeze, weaving into other lanes and traffic, weirdly, often on the interstate.
Other than that, and the constant itching, and the ability to make people think my eyes are closed all the time when they’re not, turning 65 was no different than turning 45, which is when I turned gray.
Which reminds me, that I’m not sure if I left the ice cream out again. I like to let it get a little soft and warm so it doesn’t make my teeth hurt.
But, other than that, getting old doesn’t seem to hurt or make much of a difference. And, as you can tell from reading this, I’m as sharp as I always was and don’t see any reason not to vote for Biden.

Council members hiding from protesters and the truth
Chaos among conservatives on the Aurora City Council this week illustrated how profoundly out of touch they are from the community in regard to police reform.
For the third time in just several weeks, the July 8 City Council meeting spun out of control as protesters demanded to be heard by city lawmakers about their anger over the officer-involved death of yet another Black man at the hands of Aurora police.
The most recent fracas stems from the May 23 shooting death of Kilyn Lewis as he was being arrested in a condo parking lot. His arrest was connected to an outstanding Denver warrant for allegedly shooting a bystander while, possibly, aiming for someone else.
The larger problem stems from the unavoidable fact that Aurora police cannot seem to stop officers from killing Black people they encounter.
It isn’t as if they aren’t commanded by the State of Colorado to try and stop mistreating Black people, and especially stop shooting them, pistol-whipping them, forcing them to lie face down on scorching hot asphalt, calling them “porch monkeys,” shoving them face down between the front and back car seats of squad cars, throttling them or drugging them to death with tranquilizers.
Aurora police are being forced by state officials to stop it.
It isn’t as if the city hasn’t appeared to try to weed out most of the worst offenders, even firing officers caught tossing racial slurs at Black people or beating them bloody with their handguns or lying or being caught passed out drunk behind the wheel of a squad car.
But nearly five years after Elijah McClain was attacked by police and poisoned to death by complicit paramedics, Black people, especially men, are paying with their lives for Aurora not being able to stop some members of its force from killing Black men they encounter, usually during an arrest.
Clearly, the problem is one of attitude, in some ways racist, but in other ways disturbingly elitist and inept.
The ghastly and deeply erroneous foundation of the city council’s folly is illustrated by the recent comments of a Sentinel reader, which offered this anonymous appraisal, similar to dozens like it:
“Not every black criminal is a victim. Sometimes they’re just criminals. And Aurora is safer without this one on its streets. Sorry, not sorry.”
Other comments make it clear that because Lewis had previous convictions and an unanswered warrant, his death at the hands of SWAT Officer Michael Dieck was justified.
There are two profoundly wrong tenets with that.
Police are empowered to enforce the law, peace and public safety. They are not, and cannot be, empowered to invoke justice, even accidentally.
The philosophy that Lewis “had it coming” because he was accused of shooting someone is nothing more than a brief evolution of mob justice.
Even those so callous and indifferent to justice that they believe that people who do bad things deserve to die for their transgressions, must admit the larger problem in Aurora. The problem is that those who pay with their lives in Aurora are most likely to be Black.
That fact was not lost on the state attorney general and researchers who found that Aurora has long exhibited “patterns and practices” of racial bias.
Those are the awkward but unavoidable facts the world knew when news broke in May that another Aurora cop had shot another Black man to death, this time during his controlled arrest, with his arms above his head, holding a cell phone.
After a competent and independent investigation, it may turn out that Dieck was justified in pulling the trigger on Lewis, even while four other Aurora SWAT officers at the scene did not fire their drawn guns at him.
But for now, widespread community members are appalled at yet another lethal police-involved shooting, killing yet another Black man.
Certainly, everyone should expect these protesters to remain civil in their public discourse. These protesters need to understand that this city council has no power over Dieck nor the investigation into the shooting, nor should they. But these protesters deserve to be heard, and they need to be heard by the entire city council.
They were not just subverted on Monday, they were insulted.
Councilmember Stephanie Hancock, in a long moment of absurdity, read aloud from an 1852 speech by Frederick Douglass. Hancock then scolded protesters, whom she observed at the start of the city council meeting not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.
“For anyone who won’t stand for the Pledge, who won’t acknowledge that this country is great, I would be happy to help you pack your bags and leave.”
Hancock’s nationalistic “my way or the highway” antic is a major blow to her credibility as a cogent and competent lawmaker and leader.
Hancock, who is Black, excoriated other Black people in the audience for not believing, as she says she does, that “American society was founded on the values of liberty and equality rather than the manifestation of racism that was slavery.”
Hancock embarrassingly misses her own point.
These protesters — who are not “bullies, terrorists, anarchists, opportunists, provocateurs and others who want to lift their voices so they can get social media clicks” as she accused them of being — are angry because Aurora police have been sanctioned for violating the very “liberty and equality” of Black people that she so vocally says she appreciates and defends.
The onus is on the city, and this city council, to prove that Aurora police can be trusted and permitted to continue to enforce the law, and quit shooting and killing Black people they encounter.

Biden needs grade-schooling
Joe Biden’s closest confidants are wrestling with the same questions that 81.2 million of us who voted for him in 2020 have been mulling since the President’s disastrous debate against Donald Trump.
For answers, I turned to a fifth grader named Emily, who, though a figment of my imagination, dispenses the type of clear thinking that seems lost among older politicians and pundits. She wrote an essay for class urging President Biden to withdraw.
Q: Emily, even presidents can have a “bad night,” right?
A: I once did poorly on a geography test. However, I never was confused about which end of the pencil to write with, and I never started an answer about Germany and ended it with a statement about the South Pole.
Q: President Biden sounded sharp the very next day, didn’t he?
A: Teleprompter. When I sing along with a Taylor Swift track I’m amazed at how much better it sounds than when I sing alone.
Q: What about Mr. Biden’s insistence that he can still win?
A: Let me quote from the Girl Scout handbook. “Willingness to serve is not enough; you must know how to do the job well, even in an emergency.”
Q: Why should voters ignore all that Joe Biden has accomplished?
A: They shouldn’t, but it’s no longer possible to run on your record when you find it challenging just to walk.
Q: Isn’t Donald Trump a dangerous politician who speaks riddles?
A: What has two hands but can hold nothing? A clock. Now, that’s a riddle. Trump doesn’t tell riddles, he just lies, which is why this election is so important.

Q: Do you know any old people?
A: My grandpa, the smartest person I know. He can tell you who pitched in every World Series ever played. But sometimes he forgets to turn off the stove or can’t remember where he left his keys. Mom won’t let him drive me to school anymore.
Q: How old is he?
A: Seventy-four.
Q: Joe Biden isn’t a quitter, so why should he give up?
A: Life isn’t a Disney movie. In “Finding Nemo,” Marlin never gives up on finding his son Nemo — even when it means facing fears and crossing an entire ocean, we get that. But if President Biden stepped aside for the good of the nation, it would be heroic.
Q: What would you say to Jill Biden and others who are advising the president?
A: Get real. Aren’t you smarter than a fifth grader?

Aurora lawmakers flee council chamber as police-shooting protesters return to city hall
BY MAX LEVY, Sentinel Staff Writer
After a raucous meeting last month where protesters heckled and shouted down Aurora City Council members, council conservatives on July 8 tried and failed to stop the same group from speaking publicly about the fatal shooting of Kilyn Lewis by Aurora police.
The crowd of dozens — whom one council member denounced as “terrorists” — filed in silently before the start of the council’s biweekly meeting, hands raised in homage to the gesture that the unarmed 37-year-old made at the moment he was fatally shot by police Officer Michael Dieck.
The demonstrators sat through the first public comment period, when members of the public are given the opportunity to address the council regarding items not on the night’s agenda.
The matter of Lewis’ death was on the agenda in the form of a proposed formal apology to his family, sponsored by Councilmember Alison Coombs. While some protesters spoke up to tell the council they were saving their comments for the agenda item, for the most part, they sat in silence.
Once the public comment period closed, the council voted 8-2 to delete Coombs’ item from the agenda.
The procedural maneuver had the effect of blocking the public from addressing the council about Kilyn Lewis’ death, since the period of time set aside to hear about topics unrelated to the agenda had ended.
It didn’t work. Having stood by for close to an hour only to be denied a chance to talk, demonstrators began chanting Lewis’ name, led by former Denver Public Schools board member Auon’tai Anderson.
As they had done two weeks prior, the protesters marched down the stairs of the Paul Tauer Council Chamber, chanting with their hands in the air, while the mayor
and other members of the council who had tried to prevent the group from speaking exited the room through a door behind the council dais.
“We peacefully approached your podium,” Anderson said, telling those present that the group would continue the meeting on its own terms and that, since the council tried to turn them away despite the group following the rules, “this meeting now becomes ours.”
The disruption was the latest in an escalating series of protests that have taken place at the Aurora Municipal Complex since June 20, when the Aurora Police Department released a compilation of body-worn camera footage depicting the May 23 shooting of Lewis.
The footage shows a team of several police SWAT officers armed with rifles confronting the 37-year-old as they attempt to arrest him on a warrant for attempted first-degree murder. As the officers yell at Lewis to lay on the ground, he reaches into his pocket. He then lifts up his open hands, one of which holds a cellphone, and is shot once in the abdomen by Dieck.
Interim police chief Heather Morris acknowledges in the video released by APD that Lewis was unarmed.
July 8 marked the third time that Lewis’ family and supporters have confronted the council about the shooting at a regular meeting. While on June 24 the meeting ultimately continued in the council chamber, on Monday, the mayor and other conservatives did not return and instead proceeded with the rest of the council’s agenda in a nearby room.
Coombs stayed behind, as did fellow progressive Councilmember Crystal Murillo, who also voted against removing the apology resolution from the agenda. During their parallel meeting, demonstrators once again denounced what they described as a pattern of racist violence by Aurora police and vented their grief over the death of Lewis, who was Black.
“He was a good, gentle spirit. They would call him Uncle
Johnny, the kids in my family,” said Sherdina Lewis, grandmother of Kilyn Lewis, while addressing the police chief.
“I saw the video — it was horrific, and it’s so bad the way he died. What I want to say to the police department is take care of your own. Don’t let them get away with making the whole department be slapped down because of that one person.”
Morris, too, stayed in the room after the departure of the majority of city lawmakers. Accompanied by other officers, she accepted a challenge by Anderson to come down to the floor of the council chamber and hear from Kilyn Lewis’ family and others. Demonstrators chanted, “I ain’t got nothing,” which were among Kilyn Lewis’ last words, as Morris passed them on her way to the front of the room.
“I have offered my condolences to the family, and I will do that again,” Morris said when called on to address the family. “No matter the circumstances, this is very tragic … Knowing that we have these investigations that are ongoing, I just can’t comment further than that.”
Demonstrators tried to pressure other officers to do the same — only one obliged before Coombs said she believed the group was crossing a line by trying to compel officers’ speech.
Dozens of police officers and non-sworn security personnel were stationed in and around the council chambers throughout the night. Officers also flanked the hallway leading to the Aurora Room, where the council held its pre-meeting study session and mostly retreated once demonstrators brought the meeting in the chamber to a halt.
No direct confrontation took place between police and demonstrators, though many of the speakers who took the podium after the majority of council had left blasted the Aurora police department for not firing Dieck, despite the fact that his actions are still being scrutinized by investigators.
“He deserves backlash, because he took away something he can’t give back,” Kilyn Lewis’ aunt, Gena Simien, said of Dieck. “There’s not a price on young Black mens’ heads.”

AURORA OFFICER WHO KILLED UNARMED MAN USED TASER DURING 2021 EXCESSIVE FORCE INCIDENT
Three years before the fatal shooting of Kilyn Lewis, Aurora police Officer Michael Dieck used a Taser on a suspect during a 2021 incident that resulted in charges being filed against another officer who beat the same suspect with a gun as well as a third officer who failed to intervene.
The Sentinel on July 3 received a confidential tip about Dieck’s involvement in the July 23, 2021, arrest of Kyle Vinson by officers John Haubert and Francine Martinez. Vinson and two other men were sitting in a parking lot at the time they were confronted by Haubert and Martinez, who were responding to a trespassing call.
After learning that the three men had outstanding warrants, Martinez tried placing one of the men with Vinson in handcuffs. The man pulled away from Martinez, and he and the other man with Vinson fled on foot. Haubert then pushed Vinson, who had remained seated, backward onto the ground.
Despite the fact that Vinson did not run or attack officers, Haubert repeatedly struck Vinson in the head and face with his pistol. He held Vinson down by the throat as the 29-year-old cried and pleaded for Haubert to stop, repeatedly telling Haubert, “Don’t shoot me,” and, “You’re killing me.”
Arrest affidavits describe and footage captured by the body-worn cameras of Haubert and Martinez show Dieck arriving on the scene as backup while Haubert and Martinez continue to restrain Vinson. By this point, Vinson’s face is bruised and covered with blood, and he yells for help as Dieck approaches.
Haubert and Martinez roll Vinson onto his side, and Dieck shoots Vinson in the leg with a Taser. Vinson screams, and Dieck warns Vinson that, if Vinson doesn’t extend his hands, he is “going to get it again.”
Vinson was ultimately arrested for a domestic violence warrant — at the hospital, he was treated for the head wounds inflicted by Haubert and received multiple stitches.
Then-police chief Vanessa Wilson condemned the treatment of Vinson during a press conference shortly after the incident, saying she was “disgusted” and that the actions of the officers involved were “not police work.”
Martinez was subsequently charged with and found guilty of failure to intervene in the use of excessive force, the first conviction of its kind in Colorado. Haubert was charged with assault, felony menacing and other crimes but acquitted at trial in April.
While the arrest affidavits for Haubert and Martinez mention Dieck’s involvement in the arrest of Vinson, Dieck was not criminally charged, and police department spokesman Joe Moylan wrote in an email July 9 that Dieck’s use of a Taser during the 2021 incident was evaluated by APD’s Force Investigations Unit and found to have been “objectively reasonable.”
On May 23, 2024, Dieck shot and killed Kilyn Lewis, who was unarmed and had raised his hands, one of which held a cellphone, after reaching into his pocket. Lewis was wanted for attempted first-degree murder, and a team of several police officers had confronted him in the parking lot of an Aurora condominium complex to try to take him into custody.
Lewis’ death has been described by his family as the latest example of Aurora police unnecessarily killing and injuring people of color — like Vinson, Lewis was Black.
Protesters, including those who disrupted the Aurora City Council’s June 24 meeting, have also demanded that Dieck be fired from the Aurora Police Department and criminally charged.
Dieck remains on leave while he is investigated by the department’s Internal Investigations Bureau as well as the third-party 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, which may recommend criminal charges for Dieck if it finds that charges are appropriate.
According to interim police chief Heather Morris, who narrated parts of a compilation of bodycam footage from the shooting of Lewis that APD released last month, Dieck has spent 12 years on the force, including eight years on the department’s SWAT team. Morris did
not mention Dieck’s involvement in the arrest of Vinson. Moylan wrote that, prior to the killing of Kilyn Lewis, Dieck had taken part in two other officer-involved shootings — one non-fatal, the other fatal.
The first occurred in April 2018 and sent a man to the hospital who police said was wanted for attempted first-degree murder and who had fired a gun inside of a taxi with officers nearby. The second shooting took place in July 2022 and resulted in the death of a fugitive from Georgia who had allegedly barricaded himself in a building and shot at officers.
In both cases, the department cleared Dieck of wrongdoing, and local district attorneys declined to file charges.
When contacted by the Sentinel, Lewis family attorney Edward Hopkins said he was hesitant to draw conclusions on the basis of two incidents but that if an officer was biased against Black people, it would be reasonable to expect them to demonstrate a pattern of escalating violence toward Black men over the course of their career.
“I know it’s easy to become desensitized to this,” Hopkins said. “Every time it happens, we should be more outraged, not less…. The same officer who is tasing a defenseless Kyle Vinson, that same officer is now on your SWAT team, shooting and killing Kilyn Lewis. If that doesn’t alarm the typical Aurora resident, who thinks about human beings as if they’re all valuable, what’s going to do it?”
Hopkins said his firm, Rathod Mohamedbhai LLC, requested the unedited bodycam footage of the shooting of Lewis as well as the training records of Dieck from the Aurora Police Department more than three weeks ago but has yet to receive those records.
He warned that, if the department would not willingly hand over records, the family would seek them through a lawsuit.
“We think there’s something on the Kilyn Lewis bodycam, audio or video, that they simply do not want us to see, and we are going to connect the dots when we get it,” Hopkins said.

Anti-youth-violence community leaders
lament shooting death of girl, 14, at Aurora
park
Local anti-teen violence activists lamented that a teenage girl was fatally shot and two others injured when gunfire broke out July 6 during a party at an open-space park in central Aurora, according to police.
On July 8, Arapahoe County coroner officials identified the slain girl as 14-year-old Kamiaya Keyera Cleveland.
Three local Black community leaders on a live social-media broadcast Monday talk about Cleveland’s death, and societal problems that led to the shooting.
Jason McBride, speaking on the Brother Jeff live Facebook show, said the lives that young teens live now are worlds apart from that of people who were teens in the 1980s.
McBride is a prominent metro violence intervention specialist and has worked with teens in community for several years at the Struggle of Love Foundation.
“I was at home playing Atari,” McBride said about being a teen years ago.
“Now, I’m at a party at a park a night with no lights,” he said, referring to the Saturday shooting in an a remote Aurora park.
McBride said parents and the community need to intervene in the lives of children across the region to address youth who are increasingly desensitized to violence and death.
Police were called at about 9:15 p.m. July 6 to the area of Highland Hollows Park, a green-belt park area in the 1400 block of South Uravan Street, southwest of Buckley Space Force Base.
“The investigation to date has determined numerous minors attended a party at a park” in the Aurora Highlands neighborhood, police said in a social media post. “There was a fight followed by shots fired.”
The injured girls, two age 14 and one age 15, were rushed to local hospitals. Cleveland died there from her shooting injuries, police said.
“No arrests have been made,” police said.
An initial investigation has prompted police to say the shooting was “an isolated incident and there is no threat to the general public.”
Police are asking for the public’s help in the investigation.
“Homicide detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who might have video of the party and the shooting,” police said.
Police said anyone with information can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.
Jeff Fard on his Brother Jeff Show said a balloon release has been slated in Cleveland’s memory for 4:30 p.m. July 11 at 8801 E. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. at the Central Park pavilion.

Aurora Housing Authority sues city over new rules for governing board
Aurora’s Housing Authority has asked a district court judge to suspend changes made by the City Council to the rules for membership on the authority’s governing board, accusing the council of overstepping its power under state law.
The rule changes passed last month by the council require that appointments to the seven-member housing authority board be made by a majority of the council rather than unilaterally by the mayor.
They also specify that the board should include a certain number of members with a background in the affordable housing business, finance and property development as well as personal experience living in affordable housing or being homeless.
Previously, the only prerequisite for service on the board was that members be Aurora residents registered to vote in the city. The structure of terms for board members has also been overhauled, permitting members to serve no more than two threeyear terms rather than an unlimited number of five-year terms.
For current members, depending on when their terms end, that could mean serving four years rather than the five years they were originally appointed for, a detail that was singled out for scrutiny in the authority’s June 28 lawsuit.
“This sweeping initiative has the potential for destructive effects upon the organization’s operating independence and the financial integrity of future housing projects,” the board said in a July 2 statement.
“The ability of enacted public housing authorities to conduct their vital work independent of the varying political motivations of elected officials is exactly what the Housing Authorities Law is designed to protect.”
The council member who sponsored the proposal, Dustin Zvonek, did not respond to an email seeking comment on the allegations by the board that the rule changes violate Colorado law. City of Aurora spokesman Ryan Luby said the city would not comment on the lawsuit and that it had not been formally served with the complaint.
The housing authority’s lawsuit argues that, while state law empowers city councils to change the method by which board members are appointed and remove members for misconduct or neglect of duty, councils may not change the appointment process in a way that abridges the terms of current members.
Because of this, the lawsuit asks the Arapahoe County District Court to delay the enactment of the new rules at least until the end of the case and order that all of the current board be allowed to serve their full terms.
“The authority board stands committed to protection of the authority’s statutory independence and historical integrity,” the board said in its statement. “We will continue to operate as authorized by the authority’s 49-year-
old enabling authorization and the precepts of its governing state statutes.”
Zvonek first presented the rule changes to the council in May — at the time, he said it made sense to flesh out the membership rules for the housing authority board and regulate it in a manner similar to the Planning and Zoning Commission since the board is one of the most powerful groups appointed by council members.
“We have lots of different boards and commissions that we place citizens and residents to serve on, but there’s a handful of them that really have some significant decision-mak-

ing responsibility,” Zvonek said during the council’s May 20 study session.
Before the study session, the housing authority’s executive director, Craig Maraschky, warned in an email to council members that the state had withdrawn its involvement with three affordable housing projects as a result of the proposal being considered, which the state later reported was untrue.
Maraschky would not explain in May why he spread the false claim about the proposal. On Tuesday, he referred questions to Matt Moseley, president of public affairs firm Ignition Strategy Group, who said they would “rather not comment on that today.”
A date has yet to be set for a district court hearing in the case.

Aurora seeks volunteer to serve on police pension board
Aurora residents can apply through the end of July for an upcoming opening on the board responsible for overseeing the pension of the city’s retired police officers.
The board consists of the current city manager, Jason Batchelor; the city’s finance director, Terri Velasquez; the mayor or his designee, currently former Aurora mayor Bob LeGare; three members elected by pension beneficiaries, right now Bill Bell, Steven Neumeyer and Mike Thode; and one citizen chosen by the board, John Nielsen.
Board members will select Nielsen’s replacement, who will officially begin their three-year term in January. Aurora residents and owners of businesses based in Aurora may apply through the end of the month for the volunteer position. The board meets one to two times per year.
For more information about the board and the application process, members of the public may visit AuroraGov.org/Boards or call plan administrator Eleanor Beeby at 303739-6216.

Day of Resilience will commemorate Aurora theater shooting July 20
The now-closed “old hire” pension pays monthly retirement benefits to 139 members, including Aurora cops hired before April 8, 1978, and their surviving family members. The main fund contained about $83.8 million at the end of March, according to a financial report published by the Aurora Police Pension Plan Board of Trustees.
Victims and survivors of the 2012 mass shooting at the Century 16 movie theater will be honored with a 5-kilometer walk and run, chalk art display and live music during the Day of Resilience on July 20 at the Aurora Munici-
pal Complex.
Hosted by the 7/20 Memorial Foundation, the event will start at 8 a.m. with the Hero’s Journey 5K, organized by shooting survivor and former NFL player Zack Golditch to raise money for a scholarship offered through Aurora Public Schools. A shorter run for children will take place at the same time.
Members of the public can register for the run at https://runsignup. com/Race/CO/Aurora/TheHeroes5K or www.runnersroost.com.
Over 25 chalk artists will be drawing in the memorial garden throughout the morning. Wristbands granting entry to the on-site Reflection Garden on Tap festival featuring bands as well as beer from local breweries are also available for $35 ahead of time and $40 on the day of the event.
More information about the Day of Resilience and business sponsorships is available at www.7-20memorial.org.

Judge dismisses universal preschool lawsuit brought by Cherry Creek, other school districts
A Denver district court judge last week dismissed a lawsuit brought by several Colorado school districts over

the state’s universal preschool program, ruling that the plaintiffs don’t have legal grounds to sue.
In his 20-page ruling, Judge Jon J. Olafson concluded that the six school districts, two education groups, a cooperative education services board, and two families that sued the state last year had not suffered any “injury” covered by state or federal law. The districts, groups, and families had argued that the universal preschool program administration was harming students with disabilities, in addition to other claims.
The decision is a win for the state and for Gov. Jared Polis, who spearheaded the popular free preschool program, which launched last summer after a rushed and rocky planning process. It comes a month after a partial victory for the state in another universal preschool lawsuit — one brought by Catholic preschools who don’t want to enroll children from LGBTQ families. (The Catholic preschools plan to appeal.)
State officials had no comment on Olafson’s ruling Wednesday evening.
Melissa Gibson, deputy executive director of the Colorado Association of School Executives, one of the plaintiffs in the case, said in a statement Wednesday, “We are disappointed by the court’s decision, but we will continue our focus on doing everything possible to advocate for resolution to the issues impacting students and families in the [universal preschool] system.”
She said filing the lawsuit was “a last resort,” and that the plaintiffs
will continue to work with the state to push for solutions and transparency.
In addition to Gibson’s group, the plaintiffs include the Consortium of Directors of Special Education, Centennial Board of Cooperative Educational Services, two families, and the six school districts: Brighton-based 27J, Cherry Creek, Harrison, Mapleton, Platte Valley, and Westminster. They filed the lawsuit against the state last summer, claiming its administration of the universal preschool program was harming children with disabilities and breaking financial promises to families and school districts. In response, the state asked the court to dismiss the suit. Olafson held a hearing on that motion at the end of April.
Olafson acknowledged that the school district plaintiffs had faced “headaches” in adapting to the new universal preschool system, but said “these growing pains are not legally protected injury.”
He also said that some of the plaintiffs’ concerns would be better addressed through legislative or administrative means, rather than through the courts.
During the 2023-24 school year, about 39,000 4-year-olds received tuition-free preschool through Colorado’s universal preschool program — representing 62% of children in that age group in the state. Enrollment is expected to be even higher next year.

It takes a village. Aurora has one at La Plaza Colorado
TRADITIONAL MEXICAN MARKETPLACE OPENS IN AURORA, INCUBATING BUSINESSES AND DELIVERING FOOD, SHOPPING AND FESTIVE FUN
BY ALEXANDRA MUNOZ-CORDOVA

The Sentinel Story Sprint is a two-week, statewide journalism project. Story Sprint brings students from Colorado State University, Community College of Aurora and Colorado College into the Aurora newsroom for two weeks to cover local stories, alongside veteran journalists. Funded by a grant from the Colorado Media Project, the Sentinel Story Sprint provides a professional newsroom with emerging journalists, and emerging journalists with a professional newsroom.
The old Kmart parking lot on Colfax is the same, but inside it has become a unique world of shopping, entertainment and food.
Mirroring hugely popular venues for food and fun in Mexico and Latin America, La Plaza Colorado brings the experience home to Aurora.
Live music, the sound of a commanding fountain and friendly chatter fills the vast hall of shops and stalls. People stroll around enjoying the view and the splashing water at the heart of La Plaza. Vendors in what looks like a colonial Spanish village tend to their shops, each one offering something new and usually hand made. Vendors don’t just offer earrings and pet toys, but hundreds of other crafts. Every vendor has a story.
“I feel very happy here,” Maria Madrigal said. She owns Silver Linings in La Plaza. “ I feel a part of a family because these are my people from Mexico and we all get along well. We all help each
other as much as we can.”
She has watched as the community come to life since its partial opening on March 29.
The project has been a long time in the making for Doug McMurrain, owner at La Plaza. He’s been working toward opening the market since 2019.
McMurrain points out that plazas like this one are much more than just shopping malls or markets. They’re communities, he says. And Plaza Colorado is the extension of plaza communities he created in Atlanta and Charlotte N.C.
Creating a series of plazas from what was virtually an accident when he started his first one in Atlanta has been a surprise. These villages are a labor of love. The Aurora project is no exception.
Doug said the Aurora project offers 172 mercado stalls, 24 food hall kitchens, a family entertainment center and more on the way to serve the Hispanic community all in one place. The task hasn’t been easy but since its partial
opening — it’s slowly coming together.
“ It’s a little frustrating, we haven’t finished building,” Doug said, “ we’re not at our full ability yet to serve the community. It’s coming, yeah, but I’m not there yet.”
Despite delays, La Plaza hasn’t gone unnoticed as people continue to come in to see what has been done so far. Doug describes how the weekends have gotten popular as people have come to enjoy live bands playing in an entertainment center. It has started to become a home for people as they come shop and enjoy various aspects of La Plaza that it has to offer so early on.
For Maria, the Plaza has not only been like a home to her, but like a family. Since starting her business, Silver Linings, 15 years ago, there’s not a day where she doesn’t appreciate the community being built at La Plaza. There is something more about the La Plaza
›› See VILLAGE, 10

than just community, she says, it also comes with an opportunity for the vendors to grow.
“I started my business when I divorced the father of my children and he left us with nothing. The salary that I earned at a job was not enough to pay my bills and support my children.” Maria said.
Maria started her jewelry business out of a pencil box, spending her days meeting clients at their homes in hopes to sell in order to make ends meet. There would be days where Maria would spend her time selling authentic gold jewelry from Mexico at the flea market under the hot summer sun with her two youngest daughters, who would often beg her not to have to go.
Since the opening of La Plaza, Maria has seen her business grow to a point where she now can focus on reselling various jewelry including bracelets, charms and other goods in an environment she describes as “home.”
Similarly, Enma Carvajal, another vendor at La Plaza, who sells eyelashes and children’s clothing, feels the same support for her business, Pink Dreams.
“We have met a lot of people and I feel like it doesn’t stop. There are always new people and new clients that come. Some have come back to visit me and have liked the experience. I feel like, “yes, we are going to keep growing, and we are going to try to put in our part so that this works out,” Enma said.
For Enma, the opportunity to open up her own shop in La Plaza has been like a dream coming to reality, a “Pink Dream.” After spending some time trying out her own ideas and selling at a flea market, helping her aunt with her business, she realized it was time to strike out on her own.
It wasn’t long before she found herself setting up her spot in La Plaza . Now, she’s growing as a vendor. Three months later, she knows that the La Plaza community is going to keep getting bigger.
Every business brings their own story and character to La Plaza, which Doug has fully embraced since opening up these shops. He says the village at La Plaza is “their place,” and he believes that once everything is
finished, La Plaza will become a hub for the Hispanic community in Aurora, and the region.
“It’s this place. It’s shopping. It’s food. It’s entertainment,” Doug said. “It’s … yeah, all these things together.”

Biophilia: Nature Reimagined
Biophilia: Nature Reimagined brings together more than 70 imaginative works, including architectural models and photographs, objects, fashion, digital installations, and immersive art experiences that collectively highlight the transformative power of nature. “Biophilia” is a term popularized by American biologist and author Edward O. Wilson to describe his theory that, as humans have evolved as a species, they have been intricately intertwined with the natural world. Wilson’s hypothesis invites deep reflection and poses relevant questions for audiences to consider life in our hyper-accelerated digital and urban-centric world. Organized by Darrin Alfred, Curator of Architecture and Design, Biophilia provides a space for leading architects, artists, and designers to re-examine and reanimate our intrinsic bond with the natural world.
The exhibition features works by an international roster of designers and artists including Iris van Herpen, Studio Gang, teamLab, Joris Laarman and DRIFT, among others. Summer is here and that means banana pudding and banana splits are plenitful. Thanks to the humble banana we have treats like banana pudding, banana bread and banana foster. Colorado fell in love with the banana in the 1910s, but why? And what was the banana’s tie to the larger role America was taking in her expansion into her global neighbors? Let’s meet at City Park, a popular place to hold a picnic, and learn about the interesting connection between bananas and American imperialism.
Come and join Rachael Storm, History Colorado Curator and banana expert, as she leads us on a tour of City Park and discusses her research on this topic. Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure | In Place
Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure | In Place is an exhibition created from three projects photographer Fazal Sheikh made on the Colorado Plateau from 2017 to early 2023. Sheikh’s portraits and landscapes shed light on the far-reaching consequences of extractive industry and climate change.
The exhibition presents Sheikh’s recent work in three interrelated sections: Thirst is a new series of aerial photographs that document the decline of the Great Salt Lake in northeast Utah, which is shrinking due to overconsumption and dwindling rain and snowfall. Exposure examines the impacts of uranium, coal, oil and natural-gas extraction on the American Southwest and on its Indigenous inhabitants. In Place evokes the enduring landscapes of the Bears Ears region in Utah, bringing Sheikh’s photographs together with contributions from scientists and Indigenous communities in and around Bears Ears in southeastern Utah.
Visitors will reflect upon the transformation—and often devastation—of these landscapes in the context of the past, present and future, while considering the juxtaposition of beauty and catastrophe, as well as intimate, human-scale stories and those spanning vast geological eras and changes.

GOAL life in Aurora provides statewide balance
beid Kaifo is loud and clear when he thinks about the challenges his longtime friend Iman Jodeh faces as the first Palestinian and Muslim state lawmaker from Colorado.
The pressure for Jodeh is palpable, Kaifo said, “I wouldn’t wish it on my worst two communities she must represent: her southwest Aurora district and her between the two is more present than ever after the Hamas attack on Israel on resulting war that left Jodeh’s ancestral home devastated. the fifth-highest position in the state House as the Democratic majority co-whip. term, her legislative focus is those struggling with housing, health care and stutime, she feels the need to speak out on the Israel-Hamas war as she does not speaking to the full gravity of the situation. the luxury of sitting here and hoping someone gets it right,” Jodeh said. was reluctant to bring her identity to the debate that spilled into the state Capitol, leading voice demanding a ceasefire. writes opinion pieces — the most recent on how the attack on Rafah should similar to the Oct. 7 assault. “There has been a sense of duplicity when it comes to advocating for one person, but not the other,” said Jodeh. “You know, if we are going to defend Ukraine; (and) if we are going to defend Black Lives Matter, we should defend Palestine.”
Her voice begins to rise, she completely stops moving, and suddenly words begin to pour.
“It gets to a point when you can call it a genocide and very reputable organizations, sources from around the world are saying the same thing,” she said.
Asked how she feels about colleagues who do not support her views on the Gaza war, she replies almost in a whisper: “abandoned” and “lonely.”
The barriers to leading with identity
Kaifo, her friend of 15 years and a son of Syrian immigrants, understands the pressure of having to represent an entire group.
Muslim identity in America shifted on 9/11, Kaifo said. Suddenly, being a Muslim held higher significance to the world. He, too, grew up in Aurora, graduated from Overland High School and now owns and manages the Capitol Hill Shish Kabob Grill with his father.
And in Jodeh, he sees a lot just by her presence. She represents the growing Muslim community, Muslims are not monolithic, but her perspective gives a light and nuance toward policies being passed in the house, he said.
In thinking about his identity, he recalls how people often accuse Muslims and Palestininans of being solely emotional — almost as though it is not possible for a person to hold their identities and simultaneously create strategically informed policy decisions on these issues.
“And that’s my concern always, is that we divert from the actual policy and it turns into, well, because she’s Palestinian, because she’s Muslim or because she’s a woman. No, nothing like that,” Kaifo continues. “It’s who she is as a person.”

ABOVE: A massive new 20-foot-by-30-foot video scoreboard has been installed on the east side of Aurora Public Schools Stadium at Hinkley High School to replace the old, basic one that previously stood at the south end of the venue, which has been the hub of district athletics for many years. BELOW: The new Aurora Public Schools logo that debuted in 2022 already adorns the snack bar at APS Stadium and will also be set in the center of the brand new turf field that is currently being installed at the multiuse venue.
While most people in Aurora Public Schools have enjoyed something of a break during the summer, there hasn’t been much time off for Casey Powell.
The APS athletic director is not complaining in the least about his full plate — other than not getting a chance for a vacation with his family — given what he is working on.
Powell’s monumental task is the ongoing monumental facelift of Aurora Public Schools Stadium — the hub of district athletics — located on the campus of Hinkley High School, Aurora’s second-oldest high school.
The turf field that was originally installed in place of grass at the stadium was roughly two decades old and needed an upgrade, while the track surface had been around for quite some time and needed to be replaced. Both were removed during the spring with the land cleared and leveled again to prepare for new surfaces.
The work at the stadium required some shifting in the prep schedules for the spring season, when the facility typically got good use. District girls soccer teams — especially Hinkley — were unable to use the venue for home games and instead made use of fields at the nearby Aurora Sports Park. Boys and girls lacrosse games for the two district programs (both based at Rangeview) played exclusively at their home sites,
Stadium remake
“When this is all done, it’s going to be unreal,” Powell told the Sentinelon a recent venue visit.
BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports Editor
When Powell took over in 2018 for Mike Krueger —who is now the Colorado High School Activities Association Commissioner — Powell got to finish off the construction of a brand new press box at the stadium. Since then, a small video board, new lights and several other touches were added.
A stadium that is shared by Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley, Rangeview and Vista PEAK Prep high schools — in addition to Aurora West College Prep, William Smith and some middle school events — suffers significant wear-and-tear.
Major work was needed and with a combination of funding approved by city voters in a recent bond (which earmarks money for facilitity improvements) and some from the district athletics budget, the extensive project was made possible and work began in the spring.
and there were no home track meets.
But the venue will be open for business in a big way this fall beginning with a grand opening event on Aug. 17 for middle school athletes. The first football game of the fall season is scheduled for Aug. 29 when Hinkley plays host to Englewood, while that will be followed Aug. 30 by a home contest for Rangeview against Eaglecrest.
For those who are regulars at the venue, the most noticeable change will be in terms of scoreboard, where a long-existing basic scoreboard and small digital board located at the north end — which will have a new home at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood in an agreement reached between Powell and the Jefferson County School District — have been replaced by a brand new, massive screen on the east side.
The 20-foot-by-30-foot video display will face the stands and make it easier for spectators to track the score and time. The scoreboard is so big — though Powell turned down an overture

to buy a bigger one — that it has three levels of catwalks on the back side that can each accommodate 6-foot people. It is comprised of a series of panels that can be detached and replaced individually as needed, allowing for full functioning at all times.
Powell is also looking forward to the new capability of posting video replays on the board, as well as streaming live feeds from the field or stands onto the screen. Small in-game entertainment pieces and advertising that have been regular in game days in the past will also run.
When installed, the turf will include the new Aurora Public Schools logo — which debuted in 2022 — in the center. It will also be put into use for a new sport, as girls flag football (which was recently sanctioned by the CHSAA) will be in play for the upcoming fall season.
Powell has other projects on the horizon for the completion around the district. Among them are the tennis courts at Rangeview, which are in a significant state of disrepair and forced the girls tennis team to play exclusively on the road in the spring. They are scheduled to be replaced and come with a new set of lights as well.

SOFTBALL Colorado 4th of July event wraps up in city
The annual softball invasion of Aurora and the surrounding area ended July 7, as more than 1,000 fastpitch teams from all corners of the country in several age groups departed after the end of Triple Crown Sports’ Colorado 4th of July event, the Colorado Fireworks/ Sparkler tournament.
Competition in age groups 16U and 18U took place at several venues around Aurora, including the Aurora Sports Park, Arapahoe Little League Complex, Highline Park, Horseshoe Park, Olympic Park, and nearby in other locations, such as Kennedy Sports Complex in Denver.
For just over a week — which was remarkably unaffected by weather — the Fireworks event celebrated its 55th anniversary with days packed with more than 1,000 games played in front of hordes of spectators as well as more than 500 college coaches. A slew of champions were crowned in several different brackets at the end of one of the largest tournaments in the country. Running concurrently was the Sparkler, which took place primarily in the Brighton/Thornton/Westminster area, along with the Colorado Sparkler Junior tournament for 12u and 14u teams in Colorado Springs and Northern Colorado.
Between the tournaments and age groups, a number of teams with former or current Aurora prep softball players were involved.
The Colorado Angels Waller team — coached by new Vista PEAK Prep coach John Waller — included graduated players from local programs in Sade Davis and Kiki Pryor (Cherokee Trail) as well as Ashley Miller (Grandview) plus Vista PEAK Prep junior-tobe Jaya Gray. The Angels went 4-0 in pool play and finished the 18U Sparkler tournament 7-2. In the Fireworks 18U Power Pool was the Colorado Angels Quimby, which went 1-3 in pool play and 1-6 overall. That roster included graduated Cayman Lightner of Cherokee Trail and McKenna George of Eaglecrest along with Eaglecrest senior-to-be Kaitlyn Hendrian and Grandview juniors-to-be Sasha Kennedy and Madison Jaramillo. BOYS SWIMMING
Buffs, Wolves have four Academic All-Americans apiece for 2024 season
The Grandview and Smoky Hill boys swim teams were extremely competitive in the pool during the 2024 spring season, and there was good competition among its members in the classroom as well.
The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Assocation (NISCA) put out its list of Academic All-Americans for the 2023-24 season, and four Wolves and four Buffs

made the cut. Eligible athletes had to be graduating seniors who lettered with their varsity programs and achieved a Grade Point Average of 3.750 or better on a 4-point scale.
Coach Scott Cohen’s Smoky Hill team finished sixth in the Class 5A boys swimming state meet with the help of a strong senior class. Patrick Adams, Jake and Sam Baker, and Kyle Brushaber put the finishing touches on their careers with Academic All-American honors to boot.
Coach Dan Berve’s ninth-place Grandview team saw Academic All-American nods go to Julian Dobrski, Erik Gustafsson, Graydon Rogers and Sam Shoemaker.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Smoky Hill stars in the classroom with one of nation’s highest GPAs
Only five teams in the country who submitted their qualifications to the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) were as accomplished academically as the Smoky Hill girls swim team.
Coach Scott Cohen’s Buffaloes achieved a 3.934 cumulative team
Grade Point Average for the 2023-24
season, which was the sixth-highest among the teams that entered. Smoky Hill also was among 77 teams nationally (with at least 12 members) to finish above 3.750, which landed it NISCA’s Gold Award. Recently, the program also won Gold Awards for the 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons as well.
Helping the cause for the Buffaloes were three graduating seniors who achieved Academic All-American honors as well in Alana Behrens Fassrainer, Tess Durrell and diver Christianna Duthie.
Kaitlyn Hafer, Avery May, Kate Mullin, Keira Vail, Reema Wagh and diver Tanvi Jitta of Grandview also achieved Academic All-American status, which required a graduating senior to letter with the varsity team and hold an individual GPA of 3.750 or better on a 4-point scale.
