CHANGE IN NUMBERS

Dog gone. Despite endless pet peeves, you can’t forget your family

Pawing through old tools last weekend, I came across what looked like a crumbling doggy rawhide bone, not the sandpaper I needed.

It was an old dog bone.

It’s the quiet I still notice more than anything since our dog Daisy died almost 10 years ago.

After a decade before that of perfecting her role as the most stubborn canine on Earth, our family Bichon Frise fell victim to some mysterious, costly doggy infection and departed the planet for good.

She was an uncommonly smart little dog, which was her problem.

Actually, her high level of intelligence became our problem.

We picked her out from a litter of white puff-balls in early spring one year, as a birthday present for my then-kindergartner daughter. Daisy wouldn’t be put off when we looked at the other pups.

Big, red flag was ignored.

She loved being around people, especially kids. She loved any kind of attention, and she really loved her dinner.

Second big, red flag.

If you’ve ever seen one of these dogs, you would immediately think, “priss,” and that she probably spent most of her time on the end of a shiny, pink vinyl leash hooked to a sparkling collar. When groomed, these dogs are electric-white puff-balls. But those who’ve spent any time with the breed know that they’re funny and determined pigs in a white blanket, which is rarely ever white.

Daisy’s favorite couture was grayish dreadlocks adorned with a few smatterings of squirrel poop and something that died under the rose bushes.

She was the queen of eye gunk and had an uncanny talent for getting little balls of doodie stuck in the fur under her tail.

For almost 11 years I had to do things to orifices on that dog that I wouldn’t do for my own kid, or even myself.

Even a hint of moisture could set off a chain reaction of smells that could make you stagger.

She was strong in many ways. My wife, Melody, was determined that Daisy was going to be a well-behaved pet.

Daisy was determined that we were going to be well-behaved humans.

The battle lasted for all of her 10 years, leading to little more than an occasional truce, accusations of head-butting and an inevitable detente.

Melody insisted that our dog never jump up on people, sit on furniture or beg for food or attention. Daisy insisted on the left side of the sofa, to be picked up rather than having to jump and fresh cheese on her eggs on the weekend.

She would occasionally sneak out of the backyard if there was a gate left open, only to come to the front porch and bang on the door to be let in. She loved to play fetch, as long as I was the fetcher.

She loved comfort. She had a pillow she would drag from place to place all day to get the best spot in the yard for sun in the winter and shade in the summer. She loved to drink from the side of a dribbling ceramic fountain, as if we’d installed it there just for her pleasure.

The party came to an end several years ago after a particularly ugly episode involving some patio table dancing, and Melody insisted that Daisy go to the women’s prison right here in Aurora. She was sentenced to one month. It’s a remarkable program where inmates live and work with dogs round-theclock to teach them what’s what.

When Daisy came home, she gave us “the look” a lot and slept with her paws hanging out of the grate of her kennel. The prison people taught us how to make this nasty, guttural barking-like sound that was supposed to be “the sign” to behave.

It worked amazingly well — for a while. After two more trips to prison and years of faithfully grunting for compliance, Daisy agreed to stay away from the table when we ate, and she instead gave us long crusty stares and longer, loud, annoyed sighs.

Despite the years that have gone by since she died, I sometimes think I hear thumping tail sounds from the inside of her kennel when I shuffle into the kitchen in the dark. I occasionally hear the tinkling sound of her kibble hitting the porcelain breakfast bowl and her looking at me every day as if to say, “Seriously? Would you eat this crap?”

But mostly, it’s just quiet.

Aurora must answer immigrant controversy queries now

It’s time for straight answers about controversies in Aurora swirling around tens of thousands of Venezuelan immigrants, and if the city won’t’ provide details, state and federal officials need to step in.

Aurora residents are being told a catalog of conflicting stories about whether some Venezuelan immigrants are victims of crimes, perpetrators of crimes, or both.

The story actually started several years ago, before political and living conditions in Venezuela became so dire that more than a third of the country fled.

The story affecting Venezuelan immigrants today started in 2015 when Aurora and other major cities grappled with the so-called “sanctuary city” dilemma.

The slur was the invention of far-right conservatives trying to make it as if large cities were complicit in aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

In reality, cities like Denver and Aurora determined that community police cannot assist immigration police in tracking down or identifying undocumented immigrants and uphold public safety at the same time.

The wisdom behind that is tried and true. If police ask for “papers please,” they’ll do it almost certainly only with people of color, and people who don’t speak English or have Latino accents.

But much worse, undocumented immigrants and others will fear and avoid local police if they enforce immigration law, making them prime targets for all kinds of criminals. And, for those undocumented immigrants who get in car collisions or other legal trouble, the chances of them bolting from the scene skyrockets.

That’s why on more than one occasion over the past several years, Aurora has shunned the slur of “sanctuary city” but abided by local law enforcement protocols that only make sense.

But beginning two years ago, as many as 40,000 Venezuelan immigrants descended on the Denver metro area. Many, clearly thousands, have moved into Aurora.

They came to the United States for jobs. And this is a place hungry for workers.

Despite that, a completely dysfunctional Congress and feeble Biden Administration have created only bureaucratic

gridlock for these immigrants, making them a burden on local taxpayers rather than the asset they could be, and want to be.

Foolishly, the state and federal government have for all practical purposes ignored the problem, periodically sending some money, not nearly enough.

Denver and Aurora are suffering a burden not unlike a hurricane or earthquake, but with no federal and very little state assistance.

That’s wrong.

But all this got much worse last week when 4,000 Venezuelan immigrants and others descended on a parking lot at the Gardens on Havana shopping center. The event, apparently a flash-mob driven by social media posts, resulted in a rowdy and dangerous spontaneous rally prompted by the Venezuelan presidential election.

What actually happened at this event is still unclear. City Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky insists that police have proof shots were fired at a police car from someone at the flash-mob event.

There are questions about other illegal incidents, gunfire into the air and possible harassment of store employees.

Police have not addressed those disputes with a factual and detailed release, Instead, the event has become political fodder for a wide range of anti-immigrant factions.

The allegations center on Aurora and Denver residents not being safe among these immigrants because of their alleged lawlessness and because of allegations that now Venezuelan gangs have also migrated to the metro area and are run amok.

Complicating this is news, obtained by the Sentinel, indicating from Albuquerque Police, that the notorious Tren de Aragua gang has landed in the metroplex, and that they have been given a “green light” to shoot police in Denver and Aurora.

Despite repeated requests from the Sentinel and other media, Aurora police have not told the public to what extent the TDA gang problem exists, or if it even does.

There is no sense of whether Denver and Aurora have created an intelligence plan to monitor closely what’s happening among Venezuelan immigrants, or if they’re even

capable of doing it.

Clearly, Aurora police were sandbagged by the July 28 Gardens on Havana flash mob.

It’s unclear now where many of these migrants are staying, how they’re surviving, and whether they are victims or perpetrators along with TDA gang members.

This is an international problem, and one plaguing numerous American cities, just like Denver and Aurora.

This week, the owner and manager of an apartment in northwest Aurora has insisted publicly that his apartment complex has been overrun with TDA gang members and Aurora police have done nothing to stop it.

CIty officials have insisted that the apartment complex owner is fabricating the narrative to distract from years of code, safety and other violations at the complex that has made the building’s almost 100 units uninhabitable.

The owner insists that Aurora police should take care of problems inside the apartment complex, checking for some kind of immigration and gang credentials among residents. No.

Problems like this are issues that only city code enforcement and property owners can address. Aurora Police cannot be immigration warriors.

Underlying all of this is real danger for these immigrants, who truly could be targets of gangs, and more likely, victims of anti-immigrant hate crimes.

The problem has become a ticking bomb of possible horrors and tragedies — for all of the community — and it demands a transparent and forthright explanation to the public of what these agencies know, and what they don’t.

State and federal officials must intervene in this chaos, providing intelligence, money and other resources to handle an influx of migrants that, clearly, Denver and Aurora are unable to manage.

If the city can’t provide answers, then state and federal officials need to take over that job immediately. It’s too critical of a problem to permit politics or malfeasance to create unnecessary risk.

Aurora Police must end its racist practices

In 2015, it was Naeschylus Carter-Vinzant. Then, Elijah McClain. Then, Jor’dell Richardson. Now, it is Kilyn Lewis. If Aurora’s leaders fail to act, there will be yet another. We are tired. We are enraged. We are aching for change. Aurora police officers have killed too many Black lives. This is to say nothing of other instances of less-lethal force and racial profiling that, while failing to make the headlines, have undermined community trust.

In 2020, The ACLU of Colorado settled a case brought on behalf of Jamie Alberto Torres after Aurora Police Department (APD) officers brutalized him in response to a noise complaint. Our complaint identified 13 other instances where Aurora police subjected people of color to brutal violence in response to minor infractions, demonstrating that incidences like this were not an exception; they were the norm.

In another encounter, APD officers removed Dwight Crews, a Black man with a disability and ACLU client, from his home without a warrant. When Crews tried to stop his cat from leaving his home, officers tackled and handcuffed him on loose jagged rocks. They charged him with resisting arrest; a judge, however, dismissed the charges.

In another incident, two Aurora officers racially profiled Omar Hassan, another Black man and ACLU client. The officers commanded Hassan at gunpoint to leave a coffee shop where he had stopped after a night shift at work. On their own accord, the officers told him his “kind of business is not welcome here” after he bought a muffin and sat down to eat it. In the state’s most racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse city, this flippantly racist attitude is particularly intolerable. These abuses have cost the city hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of dollars. Mr. Torres was ultimately awarded $295,000 in damages; Mr. Crews was awarded $35,000; Mr. Hassan was awarded $40,000. None of the officers involved, however, faced disciplinary action.

Indeed, the situation is so dire that APD entered a consent decree with Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser in 2021 after the office found a “pattern and practice of racially profiled policing.” Nearly three years later, after four police chiefs, three of them serving interim roles, APD has still not done enough to end its racist habits.

In the face of a police department so resistant to change, it is up to our city leaders to force it. Instead of addressing this issue, however, Aurora City Council members have refused calls for institutional fixes, including a civilian oversight committee, alternatives to policing, and more. They have attempted to undermine institutions like the Aurora Public Defender’s Office that can identify and monitor systemic injustices in the city’s criminal legal system. They have shut out concerned community members. The Denver-Aurora Community Action Committee and other community members report that the Aurora City Council continues to silence Kilyn Lewis’ family and other community members during public comment. This is not leadership. This is hubris. This is cowardice. How many more Black and brown people must APD injure and kill before city leaders act?

Aurora City Council must fulfill its commitment to community safety, including safety from police violence and terror. Failure to do so threatens the lives of Black and Brown Aurora residents and prolongs this string of tragedies to an infinite loop. Perhaps most regrettably, it threatens to overshadow the vibrancy, vitality, and resiliency of this community and those that give it life.

Aurora apartment owner says cops let immigrant gang overrun a complex, but officials say neglect turned it into a slum

‘THEY CAN’T EXPECT THESE ISSUES TO BE RESOLVED BY LANDOWNERS’

Dozens of apartment residents, many low-income and migrant, are at the center of a dispute among the owner of the complex and the City of Aurora over unsafe living conditions and alleged crime.

The owner of the 99-unit apartment complex at Aspen Grove Apartments at 1568 Nome St. told Sentinel Colorado the Aurora Police Department has failed to control what he says is unchecked Venezuelan gang activity at his apartment buildings.

The city denies that and points to a property manager facing court action for numerous health and safety code violations at the building dating back to 2019 — before Venezuelan immigrants arrived in Colorado — as the real problem.

All of the residents at Aspen Grove, listed in city records as “1568 Nome” face eviction next week as the city is moving to close down the complex, stating that

the complex is uninhabitable. The owner of the complex refers to it as “Aspen Grove,” some city records and online rental sites refer to it as “Fitzsimons Place.”

Aurora provided photos and records to the media yesterday documenting consistent and widespread rat, mice and cockroach infections, piles of garbage, dangerous electrical and plumbing issues among other health and safety problems.

The city has moved to shut down the complex through municipal “nuisance” laws, citing the catalog of documented crimes and upkeep.

Underlying the growing dispute is how Denver and Aurora are handling the challenges of a wave of up to 40,000 Venezuelan migrants coming to the region over the past two years. The surge of migrants has overloaded local immigrant resources.

The crisis has become regular fodder in the 2024 General Election, pitting local and national political factions against each other.

Last week, an Aurora shopping

center was overrun with an estimated 4,000 cars as a disorderly flash-mob, lured by social media posts, attracted people focused on the results of the July 28 Venezuelan presidential election.

City officials said Aug. 5 the legal action to shut down Aspen Grove is unrelated to all of that.

The owner spoke to the Sentinel, via telephone, with his public relations representative, asking not to be named, citing a fear of violence and threats against him and his family.

The city has identified the property owner in numerous court documents as Nome Partners LLC. Court filings against the property name Zev Baumgarten and Nome Partners LLC, a Denver company.

The owner told the Sentinel that he’s pushed Aurora Police since last September to help remove what he claims are members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua squatting in his buildings and threatening his tenants and

Walmart grocery closure leaves Aurora Colfax community struggling for answers — and groceries

Neighborhood advocates and residents of northwest Aurora say they’re determined to find a way to return grocery access to a stretch of the Colfax corridor where Walmart closed its doors at 10400 E. Colfax Ave. in June.

People living in the neighborhood say Walmart was often the most affordable and reliable option for food and household necessities for the community, which already faces high rates of food insecurity.

Approximately two-thirds of northwest Aurorans express difficulties accessing food, compared to 11 percent statewide, according to Caitlin Matthews, executive director of Food Justice NW Aurora. Food prices are among the biggest obstacles, she said during a July meeting hosted by the organization.

The event at Montview Elementary School attracted nearly 100 northwest Aurora residents, business owners, city officials, lawmakers, and community volunteers who discussed the closure’s impact and potential short and long term solutions.

Walmart’s closure has forced

many to travel to grocery stores several miles away or spend more money at smaller local markets that don’t tend to carry all of the items or offer all of the services a chain grocery store does.

“Many of these residents rely on the 15 and 105 (bus routes) for their mode of transportation, which can be costly. There is a huge need for things that are within walking distance. Walmart was that for them. This has been devastating. There’s a six-mile stretch before you can get to a full-service grocery store,” says Mateos Alvarez, executive director of the Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition.

Alvarez and others point to a high shrink rate — or loss in revenue due in part to shoplifting — as a driver of the store’s closure.

A Walmart spokesperson said in a statement “…there is no single reason these decisions are made, but the criteria and standards we have in place for running a healthy business include current and projected financial performance, location, population, customer needs, and the proximity of other nearby stores.”

Walmart isn’t the only large grocer to leave the space.

“The profit margin was just not there for that grocery store,” Alvarez says, and he fears that it might not be for any large grocery chain at that location.

Walmart was the third grocery store to vacate the retail space since the Century Square shopping

center was built in 1986 to accommodate a King Soopers store. It closed in 2006.

Still, community partners say more options are needed in the neighborhood and Drew Shaw, whose family developed Century Square and plans to keep it a family business for generations to come, would like to see another grocery store fill the space.

“Since the closure, we’ve had offers for the space and land, but we’d really like to see it stay a grocery store,” he says. “That’s what it was built for, and it’s what the community needs.” The Salvation Army and other organizations offer boxes of supplies and fresh food during a pop-up event at the Century Square shopping center.

Walmart still has five years left on the lease, according to Shaw, who works as the shopping center’s property manager. At the community meeting, he emphasized to residents the family’s commitment to the space and to the people who live nearby.

“We want to take care of this food desert problem,” he says. “We want to stay here and provide a service.”

Community members and advocates say the problem may require a unique solution. Some residents offered suggestions of farmers markets while a more permanent solution comes to fruition. Others envisioned a co-op model that could provide some ownership from the community.

At the meeting, many residents stressed that the Walmart closure represents bigger underlying issues that residents are facing, like rising housing prices and job instability, and should also be of consideration when seeking a solution.

Beyond fresh food, the closure also limited pharmacy access and options to shop for household items, like laundry detergent or in Shaw’s case, batteries, which he told residents he couldn’t find at nearby convenience stores or the Walgreens located across the street.

Some in the neighborhood say they worry Walmart’s exit will prompt other nearby businesses to do the same, and that national consolidation trends will further hurt the neighborhood.

Earlier this year, Walgreens announced it will close a quarter of its stores across the country, and the pending Kroger-Albertsons merger may lead to the closure of several grocery stores across Denver and Aurora.

“Residents are expressing fears that with closures, there’s a question of impact on surrounding stores,” Matthews says. “Can they accommodate the number of increased shoppers? Can they keep their shelves stocked?”

For now, local advocates say they plan to keep the momentum going and continue community outreach until a solution is reached.

“I believe in the human spirit and the more we organize, the

more support we can build from it,” Alvarez says. “We have community members, the shopping center owner, and elected officials who want to help us move the needle.”

SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Parents push for state law requiring school notification about gender-identity change

Erin Lee, a mother of three from Larimer County, sits behind a folding table at a homeschooling conference in south Denver. She brightly greets a woman walking by who is bouncing a baby on her hip. She asks for her signature to get a proposed ballot initiative in front of voters this November. Lee explains what it would do.

“If a child is experiencing gender incongruence or identifying as the opposite sex at school, that the parents need to be notified,” Lee said. “Signing it doesn’t say that you agree or disagree, it just says that you think that Colorado voters should have a say in November,” Lee said.

The proposed initiative, if it gets on the ballot and then passes, would require schools to notify parents

when a student socially transitions in some way, which could be using a different name or pronouns or bathrooms at school, for example.

The handling of gender in schools varies district to district. These can be issues related to the availability of LGBTQ+ focused clubs to how schools manage pronoun changes. Some districts have adopted guidelines in which parental involvement in a student’s gender transition is optional, others lack specific procedures.

But this is changing: A new state law will soon require written policies for non-legal name changes and the usage of student’s chosen names; the legislation doesn’t address parental involvement.

“We’re hearing from people across the state that they believe parents should be involved, that they are the ones that are directly responsible for the care and upbringing of their child, and to be left out or to be cut out by the school, is causing real harm. So people are excited to sign the petition,” said Lori Gimelshteyn, a mother from Aurora who is also a co-representative on the ballot initiative with Lee.

The Parental Notice of Gender Incongruence ballot initiative was filed with the state by Lee and Gimelshteyn filed in January. The pair, along with Protect Kids Colorado, a religious political advocacy group, have been organizing and circulating petitions for the initiative at bars, rodeos and churches since May.

Gimelshteyn says that her organization, the Colorado Parent Advocacy Network, a group that has advocated against gender guidelines in schools and access to Colorado’s crisis hotline for children, has received 22 reports so far this year from families concerned about how their schools have handled issues related to gender identity.

Lee is motivated by her own experience in Poudre School District. In 2021, a teacher invited her sixth grade daughter to an after school club.

“So she gets there and it’s actually gender and sexuality awareness,” Lee said.

In Lee’s retelling of the incident, a guest speaker talked to the Gender & Sexualities Alliance club at Wellington Middle-High School that day about topics including gender, attraction and queerness.

“They repeatedly reiterated that parents might not be safe, that this is a confidential meeting, that what you hear in here, keep in here,” Lee said.

Poudre School District didn’t directly respond to questions from KUNC about the content of the meeting. A district spokesperson wrote in an email that anecdotally, most students within the district do tell their parents about their desire to socially transition.

“By law, students have the right to be free from discrimination and have access to a safe and inclusive learning environment. The District does not condone anyone suggesting to a student that they should not be forthright with their families,” a

district spokesperson wrote in an email.

Lee’s daughter told her parents about the meeting and soon after told them she was transgender. In the following months, Lee says the child suffered significant mental health distress.

“It’s dangerous to have these conversations outside the purview of the parents, and especially in these mental health crises situations,” Lee said.

Lee blames the content of the GSA club for her child’s mental health struggles. In the years since, she has become an advocate for parental rights in schools, suing the district, making a documentary about the experience and now circulating the ballot initiative to require the inclusion of parents.

“If families could be involved in kids coming out and transitions, that is ideal,” Bethy Leonardi, the co-director of A Queer Endeavor at CU Boulder’s School of Education, said.

Leonardi has worked with several Northern Colorado districts, including Boulder Valley, to implement their gender guidelines. Currently those guidelines suggest caregiver involvement but don’t require it. Many families, she says, just aren’t on board.

“If kids are afraid to tell their parents, that’s information,” Leonardi said. “And we need to listen to them and we need to say, ‘Okay, so why would your parents not be included in this process? Let’s talk about that’.”

According to the 2023 Healthy Kids Colorado survey, two percent of Colorado middle schoolers and 2.9 percent of high schoolers identify as transgender. How schools manage these identities is controversial, playing out in board of education meetings and in statehouses around the country.

“I think that’s why there is a conflict, is that these are deeply felt moral principles that people are expressing,” Terri Wilson, a philosopher of education at CU Boulder, said.

Beneath the politics and rhetoric are real feelings, values that Wilson describes as moral claims.

“Parents want to know what is happening with their children and want to understand what is happening in school is, you know, a kind of moral claim,” Wilson said. “It is also a moral claim of being respectful of the autonomy of students, being welcoming, creating safe spaces that allow students to learn and grow and flourish.”

Erin Lee says her family is past the crisis. Her daughter no longer says she’s transgender or depressed and is now in a private Christian school. Meanwhile, they’re focused on gathering the nearly 125,000 required signatures by the Monday, Aug. 5 deadline.

“We anticipate this isn’t just going to be a 2024 effort. If we don’t get the signatures, we absolutely will be back,” Lee said.

Man shot, injured while walking in northwest Aurora

An unidentified man told police he was shot and injured early Aug 2 by someone in a passing car while walking in northwest Aurora, according to Aurora police.

Police were called the 1200 block of Dallas Street at about 1:45 a.m. after reports of shots fired in the area.

A short time later, officials at a nearby hospital told police a man had come into the emergency department seeking treatment for a gunshot wound.

“The man stated that shots were fired from a silver sedan while he was walking in the area,” he told police. “A separate vehicle drove up to officers in the area and stated that their car had also been shot.”

Police said no one in the car was injured.

No suspects have been identified, and it’s unclear at this point whether the shooter and victims were known to each other.

“No other details about the silver sedan are known,” police said.

Police said anyone with information can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.

Man running from burning Aurora home accused of shooting at ambulance, faces arson, attempted-murder charges

An unidentified 34-year-old man running from a burning Aurora home faces arson and attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting at an ambulance that rolled up to support firefighters, trying to extinguish the blaze.

Police and firefighters were called to the 4200 block of South Kittredge Street in south Aurora at about 3:30 p.m. Aug. 2 to respond to a house fire.

Aurora Fire Rescue officials said a fire chief was first on the scene, saw smoke coming from a second-story bedroom window and ran in to look for occupants. He found no one but a dog and got it out of the house. It’s unclear where the man accused of shooting was at the time fire officials entered the home to search for occupants.

“Someone had also called and reported that a man ran out of the house that was on fire, holding a gun,” police said in a social media post.

While Aurora Fire and Rescue responders were trying to extinguish the blaze, a Falck ambulance arrived on the scene at the house, and the man opened fire.

“The round struck the front windshield and thankfully changed trajectory, not striking any of the three ambulance employees inside,” police said in an X post. “None of the firefighters were injured either.”

The man then apparently then ran from the scene.

“As officers were coming into the area, they spotted the suspect nearby,” police said. “After a brief standoff, the suspect was taken into custody after the use of 40mm less-lethal rounds.”

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment, apparently for injuries suffered from being fired at by police with the “less lethal” rounds.

Coroner IDs man fatally shot in parking lot near East Colfax in Aurora

Police say four people were shot — one fatally — in the afternoon of Aug. 1 while in the vicinity of East Colfax Avenue and Ironton Street in Aurora.

The slain man was identified Aug. 2 by Arapahoe County coroner officials as Anthony Ray Denton-Gutierrez, 27.

The three surviving gunshot victims were taken to a nearby hospital and their injuries are considered non-life-threatening, police said in a statement.

Interim Aurora police Chief Heather Morris told reporters Thursday that the slain person was an adult male. The others injured were two men and one woman.

“This is really tragic,” Morris said during a press conference near the shooting location, a parking lot adjacent to 1472 Ironton St. Morris said an initial investigation reveals that the shooting was not random.

“Preliminary information suggests that there is a connection between the victims and the suspect(s),” police said in a statement later in the evening.

Morris appealed to the public to call police or Crime Stoppers if they have any information or video recording of the shooting.

“Anything,” Morris said. The shooting occurred at about 3 p.m. in a parking lot behind a building on Colfax, at Ironton Street.

“No suspects have been identified or arrested,” police said. “We are working to gather any suspect descriptions.”

Police said anyone with information can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.

employees.

He said tenants described to him gang members breaking into vacant apartments, patrolling with assault rifles, and threatening them to pay rent to the gang members, not the owner.

City officials deny that this is part of the cease issue, but police officials would not say if there is TDA gang activity or members at this complex or others nearby.

A document obtained by the Sentinel from Albuquerque Police warned police in the Denver area that the TDA gang is active and was given a “green light” by gang leaders in Venezuela to shoot local law enforcement officers.

Aurora police have not responded to the Sentinel regarding the warning.

City officials, however, repeatedly said the issue at Aspen Grove is unrelated to that.

Aurora spokesperson Ryan Luby points to a September 2023 order against property managers at the complex to cease overlooking years of documented crime activity or face consequences of a city “nuisance” abatement law.

It’s that measure being imposed Aug. 13.

The owner, however, says not only has APD failed to respond to the majority of his calls but, due in part to their lack of action, the gang members have fully taken over his properties and that he hasn’t had a presence there for almost six weeks.

“I told them time and time again, if you guys only took this seriously eight months ago, nine months ago, you probably could have stomped it out with relative ease,” he told the Sentinel.

Aurora said the allegations are “diversionary tactics” and fabricated narratives. The years-long

history of “substantial, longstanding, unresolved code violations,” and uncontrolled crimes committed among and to residents, began in 2020 according to city records — the year after the owner bought the property.

The issues have included rodent infestations, a lack of heat and electricity, sewage backups, trash pileups, water leaks and shattered or missing windows,” city officials said.

Online apartment finding sites list average rent at Aspen Grove for a 2-bedroom, 750-squarefoot apartment at about $1,600 a month.

Aurora officials said the owner also has also stopped paying the property’s water bill. The amount of that past due was not immediately available.

The “nuisance” letter sent last September to the complex owner and property manager threatened to close down the apartment building specifically for criminal nuisance, pointing to over 100 calls for service to only one building from October 2022 to September of 2023. These included calls for shots fired, stolen cars, trespassing, disturbing the peace, assault, arson, drugs and loitering.

The owner told the Sentinel that those are problems for the police to address.

“They can’t expect these issues to be resolved by landowners,” he said.

It was unclear Aug. 5 night whether there can be a resolution by next week other than closing down the building. Residents will have until the morning of Aug. 13 to vacate their apartments, officials said.

The city acknowledged they do not have shelter for the tenants of the building, and instead say they are working with the state for available resources and the metro area’s nonprofit community.

Ueyama’s The Evacuee hangs in the Denver Art Museum as part of “The Life and Art of Tokio Ueyama” exhibit on July 29, 2024. The oil painting on canvas shows the Santa Anita Assembly Center in the background, where thousands of Japanese-Americans stayed before being transferred to incarceration camps.

A brush with reality

DENVER ART MUSEUM’S TOKIO UEYAMA EXHIBIT REVEALS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF AMACHE INCARCERATION CAMP

Hanging on a wall in the Denver Art Museum is a painting of a Japanese woman sitting in a chair. Her name is Suye Ueyama. It was painted by her husband, Tokio Ueyama, in 1942. It’s titled “The Evacuee.” He uses saturated hues and his aesthetic is very vibrant.

“We see a very calm, peaceful genre scene here, but the context is one of great discomfort,” said JR Henneman, the director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the museum.

Behind Suye are several barracks at the Santa Anita Assembly Center – a horse racing track. It’s where thousands of Japanese-Americans were transferred on their route to internment camps during World War II.

“You can tell right away that they (the barracks) are…not particularly over-engineered, they are very basic, rudimentary structures,” Henneman said. “We do know from accounts that it was hot, it was smelly, because many, many horses had spent time there. There were comments about the flies in the mess halls.”

“The Evacuee” is just one of 40 works being displayed in a new exhibit called “The Life and Art of Tokio Ueyama.” The pieces have been loaned to the museum by Ueyama’s family and the Japanese American National Museum. The exhibit showcases landscapes, still life and portraits from his earlier years as well as work he created at Amache – one of the internment camps located in southeastern Colorado.

Henneman said she was strategically looking to highlight artists of Asian descent that made contribu-

tions to American art, as their stories are often overlooked or forgotten.

“This is the one that ended up sticking or fitting the best at the Denver Art Museum because of its connection to Amache and a Colorado history that I, as far as I know, has not been told within the gallery spaces of the museum,” she said.

Before his time at Amache, Tokio Ueyama was a very “cosmopolitan man,” according to Henneman. He arrived in the U.S. from Japan in the early 1900s and studied fine art at the University of Southern California and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA).

Everything changed for Ueyama when Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941. More than 110,000 Japanese Americans were forced to relocate when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which stated that anyone deemed a threat to national security by the military could be relocated inland from the West Coast. Even though the Ueyamas were not naturalized American citizens, they were still removed from their home.

Ueyama continued painting and shared his expertise. He taught weekly art classes in Block 7E to around 150 students.

Henneman said the work speaks to his unjust treatment but also how he pushed through and found beauty purposefully and intentionally in this context.

“It’s a message of survival and resilience and the role that arts can play in a situation you did not choose to be in, but also how the pursuit of beauty can serve to reassert one’s own humanity,” she said.

The exhibit includes portraits of some of Ueyama’s

students at Amache, as well as rocks he found and polished at the camp.

“We know exactly how long Tokio and Suye were at Amache, but they did not know how long they were going to be there,” Henneman said. “So there’s a commentary on, how does one pass time when the time is potentially endless?”

The exhibit also features two self-portraits of Ueyama – one from 1924 when he just graduated from PAFA, and another from 1943 when he was at Amache. Henneman said you can see striking differences in his expression between the two.

“(In the first,) he’s this tassel-haired, open collared shirt artist. He has a great, young artist vibe,” she said.

“Then we see his self portrait painted while incarcerated, and it’s a little bit more rigid…he’s serious here. He’s looking straight out at us. He’s not smiling…I think knowing the context in which this was created lends quite a lot of poignancy to his statement, ‘I am a serious artist. I am not where I want to be, but I am painting.’”

Henneman added that his work is important to be recognized in the American Art canon.

“If you didn’t know his name nor his face, it would not be immediately apparent that he is a Japanese-born artist,” Henneman said. “His work defies stereotypes about what kind of art a Japanese person can produce, because he is very deeply informed by what we would call a Western or European tradition.”

The exhibit is located on the 7th floor of the museum. It is free with museum admission and is open through May 2025.

Anthony Quinn: What am I? ¿Qué soy?

Museo de las Americas is set to debut “Anthony Quinn: What am I? ¿Qué soy?” This pop-up exhibition, curated by Yolanda Fauvet, explores the life and artistry of Anthony Quinn, the first Mexican-American to win an Academy Award and a prolific visual artist.

The exhibition’s title refers to a pivotal moment in Quinn’s childhood when he questioned his identity, sparking a lifelong dialogue about his dual heritage. Curator Fauvet noted, “Quinn had an ongoing dialogue with the labels being given to him as compared to his own relationship to his dual nationalities.” Fauvet finds this exploration relevant today, inspiring more inclusive conversations about identity.

Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Quinn’s heritage is a recurring theme in his work. The exhibition features self-portraits and pieces from Quinn’s Tribal Series, reflecting influences from Plains Indian cultures. Museo’s Executive Director, Claudia Moran, highlighted Quinn’s ability to navigate both acting and visual arts, stating, “The artistic wealth of Anthony Quinn invites us to reflect on the adaptations we constantly undergo to fit into predetermined social models.”

“Anthony Quinn: What am I? ¿Qué soy?” showcases the artist’s skill in various mediums, from paint to sculpture, emphasizing his storytelling prowess and deep explora-

Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure

| In Place is an exhibition created from three projects photographer Fazal Sheikh made on the Colorado Plateau from 2017 to early 2023. Sheikh’s portraits and landscapes shed light on the far-reaching consequences of extractive industry and climate change.

The exhibition presents Sheikh’s recent work in three interrelated sections: Thirst is a new series of aerial photographs that document the decline of the Great Salt Lake in northeast Utah, which is shrinking due to overconsumption and dwindling rain and snowfall. Exposure examines the impacts of uranium, coal, oil and natural-gas extraction on the American Southwest and on its Indigenous inhabitants. In Place evokes the enduring landscapes of the Bears Ears region in Utah, bringing Sheikh’s photographs together with contributions from scientists and Indigenous communities in and around Bears Ears in southeastern Utah.

Visitors will reflect upon the transformation—and often devastation—of these landscapes in the

Athletic leadership change takes place at Hinkley, Regis Jesuit

and Overland as 2024-25 prep athletic season nears

Whether as a head coach or now an administrator, Aaron Williams believes in the power of data.

Williams has used statistics to help build the Gateway High School boys volleyball program from scratch over the past three years and he’ll put more into play in his new post as co-athletic director at Hinkley High School.

He and Patrick Van Der Kwast will split the duties of running sports and activities as Aurora’s second-oldest high school and look to seize on some tangible momentum gained last year and bring it into the upcoming 2024-25 school year.

“Two years ago, Hinkley was the lowest in the district (Aurora Public Schools) in participation and we had a 30 percent increase last year,”

Williams told the Sentinel in a recent interview.

Williams had the advantage of spending the past two years as director of security at Hinkley and also served as activities director last year under Rodney Padilla, who had the job since 2016.

Van Der Kwast — who spent last year at Vista PEAK Prep — is learning more about Hinkley on a daily basis, but also has become aware of statistics that he hopes to improve on.

For more on the 2024-25 prep athletic season in Aurora visit aurorasentinel.com/preps

“I want to continue that and drive our kids to get involved and do stuff. I hope we can get that to 40 percent this year.

“I remember when I was kid that idle time was when I used to do the dumbest things, so I really enjoy having kids participate in school. I like to create opportunities for them so they don’t get into things they shouldn’t be involved in.”

Williams and Van Der Kwast represent the only change in athletic leadership in APS, as Ryan Widemon (Aurora Central), Paul Jefferson (Gateway), Erick Swanson (Rangeview) and David Benedict (Vista PEAK Prep) return to their posts.

“East Middle School has the highest participation rate for middle schools in the district, so why are they doing it there and then walk across the street and not doing it here?’” said Van Der Kwast, referring to the school two blocks to the west of Hinkley.

The two already have a lot on their plate in terms of responsibilities, but they are determined to add more.

They know that participation in athletics and activities builds engagement for students in addition to the requirements that student athletes must live up to so they can remain eligible to participate.

So adding more options is exactly what Williams and Van Der Kwast want to do. They are intent on bringing back softball in the fall and baseball in the spring — sports that have ›› See ADs, 13

been absent for a few years — in addition to boys and girls golf. Also slated to join the list of offerings this season is girls flag football, which is in its first year as a sport sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

The two have divvied up the responsibilities for the entire year, starting with the fall, during which Williams will take charge of football, softball, boys tennis, boys golf, Unified Bowling and spirit, while Van De Kwast has girls volleyball, boys soccer, cross country and girls flag football under his supervision. Both also have more than a handful of clubs and activities on their watch.

In addition to increased participation, Williams and Van De Kwast hope that will also help with the overall competitiveness of the athletic program.

The only Hinkley teams that had winning records in the 2023-24 athletic season were in boys volleyball (17-7, plus a berth in the regional postseason) and girls volleyball (15-8).

“We just want to compete; it’s not all about winning, but we want to have more nailbiters and less running clocks,” Williams said. “We want to support coaches so they are able to get our kids to a competitive level, no matter what the sport is. When we look back, did we compete and do what we needed to do to produce the best results?”

Added Van De Kwast: “We want to help these kids move forward and remind them ‘you picked up these skills and you’re not going to forget that. People aren’t going to talk about your record because that’s the most important thing.”

Both believe another key to the competitiveness component lies in the schedule. Hinkley is part of the City League, which has melded some APS schools (Hinkley, Rangeview and Vista PEAK Prep) with those in Denver Public Schools following the demise of the East Metro Athletic Conference. It has been a move that has been largely beneficial, especially in some sports, but Williams and Van De Kwast want to make sure the nonleague competition is in line with that.

“My goal and vision is to play schools in our community and the Denver Metro area,” Williams said. “That’s going to bring more people out anyways and why are we playing teams that have no connection to our community?”

Building success can then allow the freedom to expand the non-league program to include opponents that will help teams build RPI, which is a necessity to qualify for the postseason.

One major hurdle that is mostly taken care of is the wholesale change in mascots from the Thunderbirds to the Thunder, which brought the school in compliance with the mandate passed in 2021 by Colorado lawmakers that prohibited the use of Native American mascots by schools unless they have an agreement with a specific tribe.

Padilla and his staff combed through the hallways, facilities and equipment (including jerseys) to change as many as possible prior to last school year.

Aurora Public Schools Stadium on the Hinkley campus is currently in the midst of a wholesale remodel spearheaded by district athletic director Casey Powell that includes a new track, new turf field and massive scoreboard in addition to various cosmetic changes.

With all the district schools using APSS as their home football sites in addition to various schools using it for soccer, track & field and lacrosse, it will remain a vibrant hub of athletics.

“APS Stadium is the heartbeat of the football season and everybody has to come to Hinkley to get to the stadium, so it puts our name on the map in a larger way,” Williams said. “It can be a place that brings community together when we have our games.”

The proximity of the stadium is definitely an advantage for Hinkley, but it still doesn’t exempt the school from one of the biggest challenges facing prep athletics: transportation.

The cost to get buses and drivers to take teams to various locations — especially for larger sports such as football, where multiple buses could be required to transport big teams — takes out a huge chunk of each school’s athletic budget.

Even the cost of the small buses used to transport small teams has grown several fold, which puts up a barrier to overcome in the quest to offer as many sports as possible.

“Our challenge is how do we provide access to sports, while also working within the challenges of the system,” Van De Kwast said. “It’s something that all of us in the district face and schools in other districts as well.”

Ryan West takes over as interim athletic director at Regis Jesuit

Ryan West has never actually held the official title of athletic director, but he’s been just about everything else during more than three decades in public education.

The former principal at Englewood High School — who is also in his second

year as president of the Colorado High School Activities Association Board of Directors, West is more than ready for the job he now has as interim athletic director at Regis Jesuit High School.

“Regis has a great tradition, not just athletically, but they know how to develop the whole kid,” West said. “It’s exactly what I was looking for.”

West is hitting the ground running, as he comes up to speed with the school’s 30 athletic programs between the boys and girls divisions. He has associate athletic director Jordan Kasemodel — who also serves as the school’s girls basketball coach — as well as assistant principal Bryan Timme in place to help him. They have kept things together since the departure of Todd Schuler, who stepped down in early June from the job he’d held for two years.

West finds things in a very good place in many ways. Regis Jesuit won a state championship last season in ice hockey, finished as the state runners-up in baseball, girls basketball, boys and girls swimming and boys tennis and had an individual Class 5A boys wrestling state champion in Garrett Reece.

In terms of facilities, a massive renovation of Lou Kellogg Stadium was completed last summer and the basketball floor of the Girls Division gym was redone. This summer, a complex of tennis courts to the east of the school is done.

So West’s biggest concentration now is getting to know his coaches.

“Right now, I just want to build relationships with the coaches, find out who they are and what their needs are,” West said. “That’s the biggest piece for me. I’m very relational and truly believe in having a healthy work-life balance.

“Ultimately, everybody wants to win and we want to compete, but that’s not the only thing. It’s about giving the kids the experience they deserve, holding them to the highest academic standards and making sure we are developing the whole person.”

West is becoming acquainted with the rivalries held by Regis Jesuit, but he knows one well just from his own household. His kids are athletes in softball and boys basketball at Mountain Vista in Highlands Ranch, so they already know Regis Jesuit well from play in the Continental League.

Evan Henderson takes over at Overland Overland High School now has its third athletic director in as many years, as Evan Henderson has moved into the role in place of Domonic Martinez, who had the position last year after Karl Buck’s departure to Centaurus. Martinez remains in the administration at Overland in a different role. Steve Carpenter (Cherokee Trail), Jason Wilkins (Cherry Creek), Heather Nelsen and Vince Orlando (Eaglecrest), Wes Smock (Grandview) and John Thompson (Smoky Hill) all return to their posts to round out the Cherry Creek Schools group of ADs.

LOUDEST THUNDER: Luis Rangel Cepeda and the boys volleyball team had Hinkley High School’s best record for the 2023-24 prep athletic season. Guided by head coach Paul Reyes — who was honored for 25 years in coaching — the Thunder racked up a 17-7 record and qualified for a spot in the regional postseason for the first time. The summer marches towards its conclusion, as the new 2024-25 school year is near its start.

Here’s a look at some of the remaining storylines for current and former Aurora area athletes during the summer, including some who earned the chance to compete in the Olympic Games in Paris:

Regis Jesuit grad Weber wins Olympic gold in Paris as part of women’s medley relay

Emma Weber did her part to help the American women earn a gold medal at the Paris Olympics in the 4x100 meter medley relay and she’ll come home with something to show for it.

The former Regis Jesuit High School star qualified for the Olympics individually in the 100 meter breaststroke and she was deployed in her specialty stroke in the prelims of the medley relay, as she helped the U.S. qualify for the event finals.

In the final on Aug. 4 at the Paris La Defense Arena, Weber’s University of Virginia teammate Gretchen Walsh, plus Reagan Smith (who swam the breaststroke), Lilly King and Torri Huske set a world record with a time of 3 minutes, 49.63 seconds, to better the previous world record mark of 3:50.4o, which had been held by a team from the U.S. since 2019.

For her part on the relay, Weber receives a gold medal, her first.

Poulter, U.S. women’s indoor volleyball team advances out of pool play in Paris

The U.S. women’s indoor volleyball team bounced back from a five-set loss to China to open pool play at the Paris Olympics to earn a spot in the final eight.

Results were unavailable at press time, but the U.S. team was scheduled to play at 8 a.m. Aug. 6 against Poland (which finished 2-1 in Pool B) at South Paris Arena, with the winner set to advance to the semifinals on Aug. 8. Rounding out the quarterfinalists are China, Turkey, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Italy and Serbia.

Poulter helped lead the U.S. team to a gold medal — the first for the country — in the Olympics in Tokyo.

DeBever

Former Regis Jesuit swimmer McKenna DeBever — representing Peru, one of three countries in which she has citizenship — participated in the prelims of the 200 meter individual medley. Aug. 2 at the Paris La Defense Arena.

De Bever swam in the second heat and clocked a time of 2 minutes, 17.61 seconds, which put her fifth of the seven competitors in the heat. It was not fast enough to move DeBever through to the semifinals of the event.

Fall

prep sports practices get underway

The 2024 fall prep sports season is underway for at least one set of athletes, as boys golf got the approval to begin tryouts and practices Aug. 5.

The first date for official scrimmages or regular season competition is Aug. 8. Regis Jesuit is scheduled to play its first Continental League tournament on Aug. 8 at Kings Deere G.C.

The remaining fall prep sports — football, girls volleyball, boys soccer, softball, cross country, boys tennis, field hockey, gymnastics and girls flag football (which is in its first sanctioned season) — begin practice on Aug. 12 with opening contests that range from Aug. 15-Aug. 22.
