VOTER VOICES

The Sentinel and news media across the state asked voters what they want from election coverage. Here’s what you said.

Dark money shrouds an Aurora legislative primary contest
When it comes to keeping people, corporations and especially the government honest, nothing is as effective as transparency. Nothing.
It can be as simple as the powerful “CC” or “carbon copy” feature in an email, making it obvious that others are watching what’s going on, intentionally or as a courtesy.
Or, it can be as effective as state and federal election campaign laws that require campaign donation amounts and donors to be cataloged and made public.

When a candidate has to disclose whom they take campaign money from, and voters pay attention, politicians become strategically discriminating.
Taking a $1,000 campaign donation from Vladimir Putin would be ugly if it showed up in the local newspaper.
The ability for voters to scrutinize who gives political candidates campaign money, and how much, not only works to keep everyone honest, it also has the power to actually help voters decide whom to vote for.
Gun rights activists might easily be drawn to candidates who attract big donations from the NRA or Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.
Gun control activists, not so much. For years, the smartest thing governments have done is work to ensure that every campaign donation is documented. Without doubt, the most destructive event to undermine election integrity was the infamous 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United decision.
In a 5-4 ruling, the high court said that corporations and other groups had to be allowed to raise money for political candidates in secret, to preserve their right to “free speech.”
What common sense and court dissenters pointed out, is that corporations are not people.
The decision allows secretive groups and organizations to create “independent
expenditure committees.” These committees can receive unlimited donations from anyone, for anything, secretly, and then spend it on campaigns, as much as they want, as long as they don’t “coordinate” with regular campaigns.
Former Justice John Paul Stevens famously wrote in his dissent of the Citizens United decision that the conclusion by the slim court majority was “a rejection of the common sense of the American people, who have recognized a need to prevent corporations from undermining self-government.”
And they’re doing it here in Aurora, right now.
Oddly, there’s a big-money primary race for state Senate District 28, which encompasses much of Aurora, between Democrats Mike Weissman and Idris Keith.
Weissman, a state representative, was the heir-apparent to the seat, being vacated by term-limited state Sen. Rhonda Fields. Weissman, a lawyer, has been handily re-elected to his state House seat in Dem-heavy District 26 for the past eight years. Popular among fellow Dems, the race looked to be virtually uncontested all the way to the finish line.
Not now.
Keith, an Aurora lawyer for Pinnacol Assurance, the state’s workers-comp mega-corp, has run for county commissioner and leaned into local politics.
By all outward appearances, Democrats Keith and Weissman are much more aligned politically than they are opposed.
Despite that, dark-money group Representation Matters has amassed and spent almost a half-million dollars on mailers, canvassers and other advertising promoting Keith.
It’s a stunning sum of dark money even in a race between two warring political parties, but between two amicable Democrats?
Unheard of, local pundits say.
Like almost all dark-money IEC’s, the story is part shell game and part money-laundering scheme. And it’s a ploy
long used by both conservative and liberal causes, benefitting Democrats and Republicans alike.
Colorado Sun reporters Sandra Fish and Jesse Paul took a long hard look last week at the race.
They found that Representation Matters was created solely to benefit Keith’s campaign last month. The bulk of that group got its money from another state political campaign group called Brighter Colorado Futures, created May 10. That campaign committee got its money from a super PAC called Democracy Wins.
Where do all these hundreds of thousands of Super PAC dollars come from?
Without the donors stepping forward, voters won’t know until July 15, weeks after the June 25 primary election decides the race between Keith and Weissman.
That’s because the feds don’t require at least some semblance of disclosure, indifferent to down-stream state election milestones.
The problem for Aurora voters, and everywhere else dark money enters political campaigns, is that they don’t know for sure who’s willing to pony up a half-million dollars in an apparent attempt to keep Weissman from moving from the state House to the state Senate, and why.
Dark money depends on secrecy enshrined in the Citizens United decision, and public indifference to it while it’s being collected and spent.
While most political types publicly click their tongues about dark money politics, few in power are willing to do what it takes to end it.
What can voters do? Do your own campaign recognizance. Ask your own questions. The Sentinel pressed both candidates for details about issues and campaigns. All that is available in our Primary Election Voter Guide.

Like cicadas, Colorado must oblige cyclic business bigotry pests
Twelve years later and Colorado is still arguing whether a Lakewood cake baker has the right to discriminate against gays and transgender people because his religion tells him to, and the U.S. Constitution lets him do it.
This week, the controversy over public businesses being able to justify their bigotry because of religious beliefs returned to Colorado’s highest court.
Lakewood cake baker Jack Phillips was back in the hot seat, defending his 2023 decision to not sell a pink cake with blue icing to attorney Autumn Scardina.
Phillips originally agreed to make the cake, and then he changed his mind when he found out Scardina wanted to serve the cake when celebrating her gender transition.
This is the same Jack Phillips who refused to sell a cake to two men in 2012 to celebrate their marriage. Six years later, the case finally made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where justices waffled on a meaningful decision. Instead, the high court ruled freedom of religion is important, and so are Constitutionally guaranteed civil rights.
That and a more recent ruling from the same court — this time on the make-believe case of a Colorado website designer who didn’t want to make websites for gay couples if she actually ever had to really do it — made clear that there are defensible religious reasons to discriminate against LGBTQ+ Americans, but not Black or brown Americans, unless they’re gay.
What the high court refused to cede, is that LGBTQ+ Americans are equal to straight Americans in the eyes of the law, even if not in some courts.
To be clear, the Supreme Court says that the issue is one of free speech and religion. Baking cakes and launching prefab websites are matters of art, free thought and “deeply held” religious beliefs, the court ruled.
The case this week illustrates the ethical and legal quicksand all this homophobia and bigotry is built on.
The pink cake with the blue icing could be sold to a customer who wanted to celebrate upcoming fraternal twins, the high Colorado court pointed out. But the same cake would not be sold to another person for something the business owner deemed unsavory, as he religiously believes.
The same business transaction for the same service and even the same product withheld from someone a business owner doesn’t believe in, is just a civil rights violation.
How is it that most Americans agree that Phillips should not be allowed to tell Black people, Mexican immigrants, short people or lefties that he will not do business with them because they are either Black, Mexican, short or left-handed?
How can any court or American seriously try to rule that Americans do not have the right to wield their religion to discriminate against ethnic minorities but they can arm themselves with religious beliefs to justify discriminating against lesbians, gays, bisexuals transgender and queer Americans? They cannot.
Relatively recent Supreme Court rulings wandering into the religious weeds doesn’t change what previous court rulings have made ironclad. The reason this kind of discrimination has been banned is made clear in Supreme Court standards such as Brown v. Board of Education, Atlanta Motel Inc. v. U.S., Katzenbach v. McClung, and Loving v. Virginia. The high court has been consistent: There are no reasons public entities and public businesses can discriminate.
Yet Colorado is right back in 2012 again.
Critics of all of these lawsuits say religious rights should afford Phillips a bye because these two gay men or a transgender woman could have found someone else to make a cake to celebrate their “blasphemy.”
That would mean that we should allow businesses to go back to hanging up “Whites Only” signs, as long as Black people and other minorities have other options at hand.
Equal means equal. It doesn’t matter if selling wedding cakes to gay or mixed-race couples is wrong in the eyes of your church, your greataunt, your bookkeeper or your wired-hair fox terrier. Same means same.
The state needs to continue defending the rights of all Colorado residents against those who try to diminish them.

Marcano’s take on union campaign support is false — and
Juan Marcano’s recent opinion piece in the Aurora Sentinel is a blatant misrepresentation of One Main Street Colorado and the dedicated labor unions and individuals within our organization. It’s time to set the record straight and call out his baseless attacks for what they are: utter falsehoods designed to mislead and divide.
One Main Street Colorado is a progressive, labor-led organization committed to pragmaticism, collaboration, and problem-solving. We are a coalition of firefighters, first responders, laborers, electricians, utility workers, plumbers, pipefitters, and business groups united by a common goal: to expand the middle class, upgrade core infrastructure, and position Colorado as the small business capital of the United States.
Contrary to Marcano’s accusations, we are not aligned with Republican donors or dark money groups. Our organization is deeply rooted in progressive values, advocating for the rights and well-being of middle-class hard-working families. We have mobilized people in Democratic Caucuses and are training a new generation of progressive leaders—efforts that clearly threaten the status quo Marcano wishes to maintain.
Marcano’s attack on One Main Street Colorado and respected leaders such as Sen. Rhonda Fields and Michael Carter is not only unfounded but also hypocritical. Marcano once sought our endorsement, and now, out of apparent spite for not receiving it, he resorts to spreading lies. His portrayal of our organization as a front for Republican interests is not only false but also laughable to anyone familiar with our mission and achievements. This kind of deceitful behavior is a disservice to the community and to the democratic process.
Our track record speaks for itself. We have successfully implemented best value contracting that rewards Coloradans and increases the overall value of infrastructure projects in key cities, collaborated with municipalities to prioritize hiring local companies and a local workforce, fought to increase wages and benefits for middle-class fam-
divisive
ilies, and strengthened small businesses across Colorado.
Juan Marcano, Bryan Lindstrom and their Democratic Socialists of America allies see the Democratic Party as a means to an end — advancing an agenda that bashes fellow Democrats while attacking Democratic values. DSA candidates choose perpetual gridlock and dysfunction. They alienate the working-class voters for whom they claim to fight for. Both Colorado and the Democratic Party deserve better.
In fact, voters seem to agree. Last year, One Main Street Colorado backed good government Democrats in Denver’s council races against the DSA slate and won key races. We also watched as Aurora voters in November 2023 resoundingly rejected Juan Marcano, keeping a heavily Democratic city firmly in the hands of a Republican council majority. Our polling, our data from thousands of door knocks, and election results taken together show that letting DSA become the face of Democrats in Aurora has been an unmitigated disaster for our party.
Lastly, Juan Marcano’s smears of proven public servants like Sen. Rhonda Fields and Michael Carter trade in old stereotypes that Black candidates are somehow less trustworthy or are inherently corrupt. These leaders have demonstrated unwavering commitment to Aurora. Their advocacy for better wages, stronger public education, increased access to apprenticeships and vocational/technical training, and more affordable housing puts the lie to Juan Marcano’s smears. They deserve our respect, not baseless slander.
It’s time for Marcano and others to join us in constructive dialogue and collaboration, rather than perpetuating falsehoods that only serve to undermine our collective efforts. His approach is not only counterproductive — it’s not progressive, and It’s harmful to the very people he claims to support.

IF YOU LIGHT ‘EM IN AURORA FOR JULY 4 HOLIDAY
BY MAX LEVY, Sentinel Staff WriterAurora firefighters announced Thursday that residents will be allowed to buy and use their own fireworks for the next three weeks, as the city’s fire service and 911 dispatchers steel themselves for the July 4 holiday.
The announcement was made first during an Aurora City Council policy committee meeting — later the same day, Aurora Fire Rescue issued a news release asking the public to follow the law, even as lawmakers acknowledged the phenomenon of residents launching illegal fireworks has grown “out of control.”
“This situation is like a dike with a hundred holes in it, and we can put our fingers in two of them,” Councilmember Steve Sundberg said at the committee meeting.
“We get the most hateful, frustrated emails, phone calls (and) text messages from residents. It’s hard to describe the angst that these people have.”
Aurora’s blanket ban on fireworks is reconsidered every year ahead of July 4, per the city’s fireworks ordinance. In the weeks preceding the holiday, firefighters review environmental data collected by University of Colorado researchers and weigh other climate information before deciding whether to lift the ban June 15 through July 4.
Commander Steve Wright of Aurora Fire Rescue told lawmakers that, for now, conditions justify suspending the ban, meaning residents will

be allowed to buy and use sparklers, fountains and other fireworks that remain on the ground and don’t explode.
City Manager Jason Batchelor described the city walking a fine line between stifling celebrations and enabling mayhem in its regulatory tugof-war with firework fans.
“If you’re coming down too hard, folks are like, ‘What’s the matter? This is part of the holiday.’ On the other hand, you’ve got folks that take it too far. We’ve got folks that are going to Wyoming and getting military-grade mortars,” he said.
In its June 13 release, Aurora Fire Rescue described how a man was killed earlier this year by illegal fireworks detonated in an Aurora park and a townhome complex scorched last year by legal fireworks thrown in a trash can.
Citing statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Fire Protection Association, the release describes how tens of thousands of fires and emergency room visits are caused each year by fireworks.
“None of the nationally-recognized metrics we monitor to assess environmental fire risk in our community exceed thresholds requiring a fire ban,” fire chief Alec Oughton said in the release. “We urge those in our community to take precautions to prevent injuries or fires if you choose to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks.”
Violating the city’s fireworks ordinance is punishable by a fine of up to $2,650 and up to a year of imprisonment in addition to other fees
and costs that may be imposed by the Aurora Municipal Court.
Children younger than 16 aren’t allowed to possess or use fireworks unless supervised by an adult over the age of 21.
During Thursday’s policy committee meeting, city and fire officials talked about how the city is preparing for the holiday and letting residents know what to expect in terms of how fireworks laws will be enforced.
Aurora Fire Rescue plans to staff up its wildland firefighting crews during the week of July 4 to increase its response capacity and proactively patrol the city.
While Wright said firefighters are allowed to confiscate illegal fireworks, cut tickets and investigate complaints, they can’t make arrests or otherwise do the job of sworn police officers.
The agency will also share safety information at upcoming town halls and other community events, and plans to leave informational handouts at fireworks tents during inspections.
A unified command center run by Aurora Fire Rescue, Aurora’s Office of Emergency Management and the Aurora Police Department will coordinate emergency responses on the day of the holiday.
As for reports of illegal fireworks, except in the case of emergencies, the city will direct residents to call 303-627-5678, which will accept non-emergency calls starting 6 a.m. July 1.
Residents can also report illegal fireworks online at www.AuroraGov.org/ContactUs.

Decades after, South Korea honors Colorado war vets at Aurora ceremony
More than a dozen Korean War veterans and their family members were honored with the Ambassador for Peace Medal during a ceremony at city hall June 12.
The medal “is an expression of appreciation from the Korean government to American veterans who served in the Korean War,” according to a press statement from the city.
The medal was presented to the veterans by Jung-Taek Lim, consul general of the Republic of Korea. Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman and Colorado Lt. Gov. Dianna Primavera also stood alongside Lim and thanked the veterans for their service.
“About 74 years ago, young soldiers from diverse backgrounds bravely answered the call to support democracy and freedom of [South] Korea against communist aggression. Their bravery and sacrifice created the foundation for the Republic of Korea to emerge from the devastation,” Lim said.
The veterans awarded with the medal were:

lege options for students, and partner with a new group to help improve instruction. An analysis the district presented found that the school still has inconsistent teaching and planning.
For that reason, the district leaders said they looked for a new partner that could help drill down on improving instruction. They will partner with TNTP, a nonprofit education group that is also helping the Adams 14 school district, which is also under state-ordered improvement plans. Aurora leaders said they are using more specific goals in their work with TNTP as a result of a move towards outcomes-based contracts, in which the contractor’s pay can be tied to achieving certain goals.
North will have a new principal and will be working with a new management partner, switching from EdDirection, formerly known as MGT Consulting, to also work with TNTP.
North’s major focus will also be to improve teaching and leadership’s coaching abilities.
Two State Board members — Steve Durham and Deb Scheffel — voted against both plans. Durham criticized the education system as a whole and said Aurora Central’s plan seemed not to call for enough change.

Two Aurora schools get more turnaroundtime to show academic improvements
The Colorado State Board of Education voted last week to allow two Aurora schools, North Middle School and Aurora Central High School, to continue their own improvement plans for another two years.
It’s a change for Aurora Central in particular, which before the start of the pandemic was facing more criticism and more possible intervention from the state.
On June 12, new district and school administrators told State Board members about the growth they’ve experienced and the changes they want to make to the plan.
The district’s plan for Central is to continue rolling out a K-12 arts program, further develop career and col-
Other State Board members said change takes time, noting that even though changes being made in Aurora might be incremental, there are reasons to be optimistic.
North Middle School is in its sixth year of low state performance ratings but was less than a point away from receiving a higher rating in 2023.
Aurora Central High School has had low ratings for more than 10 years. In its November 2019 hearing with the State Board, the school was given one year to start showing more significant improvements. But when the pandemic began, the testing and the state’s performance ratings were put on hold. And in the most recent year, Aurora Central did not receive a rating because the district is transitioning the school into a K-12 campus. The elementary and middle school portions of the K-12 school are new and don’t have previous data to use in growth calculations.
Because of the insufficient data for a rating, Aurora Central was not yet required to face the state again. Still, the district asked for the hearing earlier than required, so the state-approved improvement plan better reflected the district’s work in the school.
State Board members said they appreciated the district being proactive in coming for a hearing before it was required to.
However, State Board members expressed concern with Aurora Central’s attendance rates, another issue identified by the district.
In the school year that just ended, Aurora Central had a 41% chronic absenteeism rate, higher than the state average of 31%.
School and district leaders said Aurora Central’s work under the community schools model is one of the ways they have tried to address attendance issues, by trying to have students and families connect to outside resources that might help.
In discussing both schools, State Board members also asked the school leaders about newcomer students. Aurora leaders said both schools have received high numbers of newly ar-
rived immigrant students.
In Aurora Central, the school opened a newcomer center within the school in the 2020-21 school year and principal Kurtis Quig said students there are making good progress with the more intensive support.
The State Board orders will require each school to return for another hearing in front of the state after the 2026 performance ratings if they haven’t improved.
“I agree with my colleagues, this is going to be hard work,” said State Board member Angelika Schroeder. “I have the faith you’re going to do enough here to make progress.”
The Aurora district has also had a decline in its state rating this year. The district would have to face the state for its own state-ordered improvement plan if the low ratings persist for five years.

Aurora woman pleads guilty to murdering daughter, 5, burning body in fireplace
‘An Aurora woman convicted of murdering her 5-year-old daughter and burning her body in the fireplace was sentenced June 12 to 84 years in prison.
“While there is no way to fully comprehend what turned this mother into a monster, she deserves to spend several decades behind bars for the unspeakable crime she committed,” said District Attorney John Kellner.
Alexus Nelson, 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, tampering with a deceased body and attempting to influence a public servant. The 84-year sentence was part of a plea deal.
Nelson was arrested a year ago in connection with her missing daughter, Maha Li Hobbs, 5.
On May 29, 2023, Aurora 911 dispatchers received a call from Nelson’s mother, who said her daughter had made concerning statements recently by text.
“The caller also raised concerns about the safety of their granddaughter,” the release said.
Officers visited Nelson at her apartment in the 1000 block of South Elkhart Way, where according to the release she told them she had given her daughter up for adoption but did not provide any documentation.
Nelson told police she had given up her daughter in a legal adoption about a month earlier and did not want her mother to know where she was, according to an arrest affidavit.
She said she had worked with the agency Adoptions with Love but did not provide any records, and the agency director told police that she had not had any contact with Nelson.
The Internet Crimes Against Children unit then contacted Nelson.
According to the affidavit, Nelson told detectives that she did not feel like she had the resources to provide for her daughter, which is why she had placed her for adoption.
After being told that Adoptions of Love had no record of her, Nelson allowed police to search her phone for emails, the affidavit said. Detectives
could not find any evidence of a transaction.
The girl’s father lives out of state and told police that he had not seen his daughter in about two years, the affidavit said.
Police interviewed a maintenance worker in the complex who had entered the apartment and noticed that the second bedroom was locked and a piece of rope was connected from the door to the door of the bathroom across the hall.
“It appears that someone was trying to keep someone else locked in the bedroom door,” the affidavit said. “He noticed children’s toys in the apartment but did not hear anyone inside that bedroom.”
“Police obtained a search warrant for Nelson’s apartment,” 18th Judicial District officials said in a statement after the conviction Wednesday. “Upon opening a utility closet door on the apartment’s patio, a detective recognized the odor of decomposing flesh. Inside a bag, detectives found the charred human remains of Nelson’s daughter. Bone fragments in ashes were also located inside Nelson’s fireplace.”
Prosecutors did not release details about how the girl was killed.
“While we were fully prepared to take this case to trial, this plea protects Maha Li’s family from having to listen to painful, horrific and gruesome testimony,” Chief Deputy DA Chris Gallo saidin a statement. “Detectives with the Aurora Police Department were able to quickly punch holes in the defendant’s story which ultimately helped us quickly solve this case and bring justice to Maha Li’s family.”

Murder charges sought in fatal shooting at Aurora fast-food restaurant
Police have arrested a man accused of fatally shooting another man during a dispute at a northwest Aurora fast-food restaurant June 14.
Officers were called to the Church’s Texas Chicken restaurant at 11900 E. Colfax Ave. at about 4:45 p.m. June 14 after reports of a shooting.
Witnesses told police an alter cation broke out between a man inside the restaurant and another man and woman, described as a couple.
Police on June 17 identified the accused gunman as Jontaye Acoray Tassian, 24.
“The altercation escalated and (Tassian) pulled out a gun and shot” the other man.
Police said that Tassian and woman fled the scene before officers arrived.
The wounded man was seriously injured by the gunshot, and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Police said the man later died from his injuries.
Prosecutors are seeking second-degree murder charges against Tassian, police said. Records show Tassian is being held in Arapahoe County jail in lieu of $60,000 bond.
Police did not provide additional information about the woman reportedly with Tassian.

Despite smaller numbers this season, Aurora’s strength in the pool remained during the 2024 boys swimming season. Reduced team sizes and the loss of the Aurora Public Schools co-op program for at least this season meant fewer in the water around the city, but those that remained were on point in the two days of the Class 5A boys swimming state meet at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center.
ALL-AURORA BOYS SWIMMING
All five of the local prep programs — Cherokee Trail, Grandview, Overland, Regis Jesuit and Smoky Hill — earned representation on the 2024 AuroraSentinelAll-Aurora Boys Swim Team based on their respective showings at the state meet.
Magner made a huge jump from his pre-meet seeding in the 200 yard individual medley to finish as the 5A runner-up. He was ninth coming into the meet, but swam nearly six seconds faster to finish behind only Fossil Ridge’s Brennen O’Neil in the championship final.
Regis Jesuit’s 400 freestyle relay team included both Magner and Greene-Cockriel in addition to senior Hennig Colsman and sophomore Nolan Kohl as they finished sixth. The Raiders swam 2-plus seconds faster than their pre-meet seed time, but finished one place lower than their projection.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Greene-Cockriel, fellow seniors Owen Mulligan, Cruze Bailey and Connor Fredericks, conversely, was projected to place sixth but instead rose to fourth with a time that improved their season best by nearly two full seconds.
Water winners

Setting the tone again for Aurora is Regis Jesuit, which sought to win its third straight 5A state championship and 25th all-time, but did not have the firepower to keep up with rival Cherry Creek. The Bruins (who sought their first state title since 2021 and 13 all-time) won half of the state meet’s 12 events and prevailed by more than 100 points over coach Nick Frasersmith’s Raiders, who maximized their points to finish as runner-up.
Senior Sean Greene-Cockriel, junior Reid Magner and the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams earned All-Aurora first team honors for Regis Jesuit. Greene-Cockriel (aka Chief) swam just one season for Regis Jesuit, but he was the area’s highest finisher in the 200 yard freestyle in ninth place (with a season-best time of 1 minute, 41.05 seconds that came in the prelims), while he also swam on both All-Aurora first team relays.
Grandview landed one individual — junior Oliver Schimberg — and its 200 yard medley relay team on the All-Aurora squad at the end of a fantastic season that saw coach Dan Berve’s Wolves set no fewer than seven program records.
Schimberg is one of only two swimmers to earn All-Aurora first team accolades in two different events, as he did so in the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard butterfly. Schimberg was the area’s only state champion, as he ruled the backstroke for a second consecutive season with a personal best time of 47.49 seconds. He was the runner-up in the butterfly to Cherry Creek’s Brodie Johnson, who also completed his quest to win an event for the second straight season.
Making Schimberg even more proud than his individual accolades was the performance of the Wolves’ 200 yard medley relay team of himself and fellow junior Evan Finlay along with seniors Alex Stinemetze and Evan Higgins. Grandview finished

Offense was the name of the game in Aurora boys lacrosse in the 2024 season, as a slew of locals appear among the state leaders in goals, assists and total points.
The 2024 AuroraSentinel All-Aurora Boys Lacrosse Team — as selected by the Sentinel in conjunction with input from area coaches — includes representation from five of the six area programs, which combined for a whopping 35 all-league accolades.
Regis Jesuit transitioned after the retirement of coaching legend Jim Soran to newcomer Ross Moscatelli and remained one of Colorado’s programs with a wide difference between the number of goals it scored and the number it allowed — 69 — which is a characteristic of all the teams that went deepest in the playoffs. The Raiders rode that disparity all the way to the Class 5A state semifinals.
Lax tracks
BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports EditorRegis Jesuit’s top offensive threat was senior Jamie Rosenzweig, a St. Lawrence University recruit, who cracked the top 10 in 5A in total points with 72. Rosenzweig racked up 50 assists, which were the fourth-most in 5A, while he added 22 goals to boot. Both were career highs for the three-year starter, who was the Raiders’ most veteran offensive player.
Regis Jesuit continued to defend almost as well as anybody in Colorado, as it ceded the second-fewest goals in the state (114) behind only state champion Valor Christian, which allowed just 70.
Helping that effort was a unit that included two seniors in Gordon Reynolds and long stick middie Connor Nesbitt, who both were honored by the Colorado High School Activities Association as All-State first team performers as well as all-league first teamers. Not surprisingly, both ranked in the top three among local players in takeaways (34 for Villanova recruit Nesbitt, 30 for the University of Denver-bound Reynolds), while Nesbitt also secured 55 groundballs. The duo fronted the stellar play in goal from junior Jackson Large, who took over between the pipes after Spencer Day graduated and moved on to Villanova. Large held up the lofty standard of Regis Jesuit netminders as he allowed just 6.6 goals per game (more than two fewer than the next local goalie) and made 146 saves in 18 games played.

was the only Aurora area player with more than 30 goals and more than 30 assists in the 2024 season as he earned All-Aurora honors.
Grandview won three games in the 2023 season and tripled that this season with a massive uptick in offense. The Wolves piled up the most goals of any team in Aurora by a wide margin — 30 — and that happened with a push from the trio of seniors Joe Alie and Liam Szarka plus sophomore Mason Kelly. Joe Alie led Colorado in goals as a senior, as he piled up 65 of them in all, which was just eight fewer than his older brother, John, scored for the Wolves in 2022 when he led the state. Joe Alie moves on to join his brother at Division I Bellarmine after a career in which he scored 162 goals and had 46 assists in three varsity seasons. The CHSAA 5A All-State first team pick finished with 208 total points, which included 80 this season, which put him fifth in 5A. Szarka — an Air Force Academy-bound star quarterback in football — returned to the team after he didn’t play last season and he was simply outstanding with a total of 52 goals that ranked above every other local player save Alie and he added 18 assists for 70 points, which is more than double what he had combined in his freshman and sophomor seasons. One point in front of Alie in fourth in 5A was Kelly, who piled up 81 with 53 assists and 28 goals. His assist total — more than double the 26 he had last season — led 5A.
Eaglecrest had one of the area’s more prolific scorers in senior attackman Everett Breniser, who helped the Raptors to a second straight 7-8 record. One of his team-high 38 goals was the one that stood up as the winner in Eaglecrest’s 12-11 win over Smoky Hill that earned custody of The Hammer traveling trophy again for the program. Breniser was the only Aurora-area player to have more than 30 goals and 30 assists in the season and his 70 points ranked fifth among locals, while he also secured nearly 50 groundballs in the campaign.
Smoky Hill showed demonstrable improvement offensively, as coach Logan Booth’s team scored 35 more goals than in 2023 in one few game and upped its win total from four to five, while the Buffaloes also lost four agonizing one-goal contests. Senior midfielder Brady Smith made a big impression with 77 total points, which included 51 assists that put him second to Kelly among 5A leaders and also vaulted him into the program’s all-time No. 1 spot with 116 in 48 career varsity games. He added 26 goals for 77 points, which was the most of any player in 5A League 1.
Cherokee Trail graduated a significant amount of offense firepower and saw a decline in its overall production, but the play of junior Blake Rodriguez in the faceoff circle was vital.

Not surprisingly, the only two Aurora area girls lacrosse teams to earn spots on the postseason appear heavily on the 2024 Aurora Sentinel All-Aurora Girls Lacrosse Team.
The All-Aurora team — which is picked by the Sentinel in conjuction with balloting of city coaches — is fueled by talent from Class 5A state qualifier Regis Jesuit as well as from 4A qualifier Cherokee Trail.
Both the Raiders and Cougars were stopped in the quarterfinals of their respective playoffs, but went deep because of talented rosters.
High School Activities Association — they will be in good hands with Gearity and fell junior Abby Vanzant. Gearity was yet another big time offensive threat for opponents to worry about, as she tallied 61 goals and added 28 assists for a total of 89 points that ranked eighth in 4A. Many of her scores came from her fearlessness in breaking through to the heart of the defense, and she was accomplished with her free shot finishes. Vanzant, meanwhile, thrived as a distributor, and she racked up 61 assists to lead the state.
Defensively, Cherokee Trail allowed 14 fewer goals in one more game than in 2023 and senior captain Cassie Bruning played a big role in that, as she helped to direct the unit and also contributed 25 groundballs.
Power players
BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports EditorCherokee Trail finished the season with a citybest total of 12 wins, and coach Blake Macklin’s team — which was smallish in terms of numbers — did so thanks to a large amount of firepower in the lineup. The Cougars were the only team in 4A with three players who ranked in the top 10 in the classification in total points in seniors Kyla Bieker and Aubrey Benton and junior Lorelei Gearity. They also had the third-most total goals as a team with 274 in one fewer game than 4A leader Northfield (283) and two less than state champion Evergreen (277).
Bieker — who has signed to play with Regis University — is the only Aurora-area player to accrue triple digits in points this season as she racked up 108 on 67 goals and 41 assists to rank No. 4 in 4A. She increased her production in both categories between every one of her varsity seasons and finished with 268 career points on 175 goals and 93 assists. She also shared captain duties with two others, including Benton, who will join her at Regis next year. Benton has an impressive resume as well, as she led Cherokee Trail in goals with 70 and chipped in 14 assists for 84 points, which tied for 10th most.
While the Cougars will miss the high-scoring senior duo — both of whom were honorable mention 4A All-State picks from the Colorado
Coach Crysti Foote’s Regis Jesuit team had a dynamic scoring duo of its own in senior Phoebe Rogala in the midfield and junior Madisyn Jokerst on attack. Both players were All-5A East League first team picks and made CHSAA’s 5A All-State second team as well for the Raiders, who racked up nine wins in the season after they made the state championship game for the first time.
Rogala tallied 59 points to rank 18th on the 5A leaderboard, just one spot in front of Jokerst, who had 58. Rogala — who is headed to play at the University of Colorado — paced the Raiders with 19 assists, while she also tallied 40 goals to rank second on the team. Jokerst earned team-high honors in a number of categories, as she was Regis Jesuit’s goal leader with 51 (just a shade off the 56 she scored a year earlier), while she also had the most groundballs (36) and forced turnovers (33) for her squad as she affected all phases of the game.
The Raiders allowed 7.4 goals per contest — fewest among city programs by far — with help of seniors Katie Kieran and Maeve O’Shaughnessy, who were All-5A East League first team performers and CHSAA 5A second team All-State selections. Kieran and O’Shaughnessy racked up 28 groundballs apiece and combined for 46 forced turnovers as key performers in a talented group that worked with alternating goalies all season.
Rangeview junior Shylin Collins earned an All-Aurora spot as well with a 40-goal season (which represented 65% of her team’s total), which pushed her to 150 in three seasons.

as the state runner-up in the meet-opening event, which marked the highest-ever finish for the program in a relay event at the state meet. The Wolves went into the meet seeded ninth with a best time of 1:34.59, but swam two seconds faster in prelims to move up to the fourth seed in the finals and then dropped a 1:31.85 in the final race to come in only behind Cherry Creek.
Smoky Hill landed two individuals on the All-Aurora first team in senior Daniel Yi and junior Ian Noffsinger, who helped coach Scott Cohen’s team to a solid sixth-place team finish.
Yi won the Hoyt Brawner Award as the state’s top swimmer/citizen/scholar earlier in the season and he was voted as the 5A Swimmer of the Year by coaches when it was over. The University of Utah recruit did not end up with the state championship he sought, however, as for the second year in a row, he finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke to a swimmer who set the Colorado state record. In 2023, it was Chatfield’s Joshua Corn who set the mark to hold off Yi, while Lewis-Palmer’s Eli Hobson did it this season with a time that knocked Corn off the top spot in the recordbooks.
Still, Yi was far and away the area’s best breaststroker and had a resume that made Cohen firmly believe he is the best male swimmer Smoky Hill has ever produced. Noffsinger will have to pick up a lot of slack next season with the departure of a large and talented senior class, but he will have his sites set on winning a state championship after getting close at the conclusion of his junior year. The Buffaloes dominated the 500 freestyle at every event they competed in during the season with Noffsinger leading the way. Swimming stroke for stroke and looking directly at Regis Jesuit’s Reid

Magner in the final 25 yards, Noffsinger made it to the wall first.
Cherokee Trail had Aurora’s top sprinter from the start of the season to the end of it in junior Bronson Smothers, who was the area’s highest finisher on the state medal podium in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyles.
The Cougars’ standout slipped a little bit in terms of place in the 50 freestyle — in which he was third in 2023 — but he was definitely faster, as he bettered last season’s 21.10
SWIMMING
Regis Jesuit grad Emma Weber qualifies to swim at Paris
Olympics
Former Regis Jesuit High School star Emma Weber has earned the chance to compete in the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris with her performance at the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.
Weber — who is a junior at the University of Virginia — finished second in the finals of the 100 meter breaststroke at Lucas Oil Stadium with a personal best time of 1 minute, 6.10 seconds, which brought with it a spot to compete in the Games in July.
Weber got to the wall behind Lilly King and a fraction of a second in front of Lydia Jacoby, who won the gold medal in the event in the last Olympics in Tokyo.
“I looked up and I thought ‘I don’t think that’s right,” Weber said in an interview with SwimSwam immediately after the race. “It’s just an amazing feeling.”
Weber credited her teammates
with a 20.86 in the finals this season that placed him sixth and put him in All-American Consideration territory. Smothers made even bigger strides between seasons in the 100 freestyle, as he was 12th a year ago, but rocketed all the way to sixth in his junior campaign with a finals time of 45.71 seconds (nearly a full second faster than he went to conclude the 2023 season)
Diving has become a somewhat lost art around Aurora in recent years and on-
ly handful of divers earned the requisite scores to compete in the 5A state championship meet. Overland junior Chad Hamilton made his state debut as a sophomore in 2023 with a 20th-place finish with a score of 343.85 points and he topped himself significantly in his junior season. Hamilton, the lone Aurora diver to make it into the final round, tacked on nearly 50 points to his previous season’s tally with a 392.05 that put him in 18th place.

BASKETBALL
Grandview star Sienna Betts helps USA to 2-0 start in Colombia
Grandview High School seniorto-be girls basketball star Sienna Betts has been a big part of the USA U18 women’s basketball teamdominant start in the group phase of the U18 Womens’ AmeriCup tournament in Bucaramanga, Colombia.
The 6-foot-4 Betts — the twotime reigning Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year — started the American team’s 91-57 win over Brazil June 18 as well as its 102-22 demolition of Puerto Rico June 19 and had a double-double in points and rebounds in each game.
She pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go with 12 points (which put her one point behind Kayleigh Heckel for the team lead) and also blocked four shots against Brazil, while she added 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds in just over 17 minutes of action against Puerto Rico.
at Virginia for helping push her to where she needed to be to qualify. She must be officially selected to join the U.S. team, but is extremely unlikely that she would not make it.
Weber started her prep career at Fairview High School in Boulder, where she won the first Class 5A
100 yard breaststroke state championship of her career. She transferred to Regis Jesuit, where she won the event as both a junior and a senior, while also ruled the 200 yard individual medley in 2021.
Weber will also be in action in the 200 meter breaststroke as the
U.S. Swim Trials continue through June 23. The U.S. Diving Trials also are underway and former Regis Jesuit star Quinn Henninger — who currently dives at Indiana University —is in contention to qualify either as an individual or as part of a 3-meter synchronized men’s pair.
The American team completes Group B play with a June 19 matchup against Mexico, which will determine seeding for the eight teams that play in quarterfinals June 21. The tournament advances through to the June 23 placing games.
VOTER VOICES
Democracy, ‘good government’ top voter concerns in Aurora and across the state
BY TINA GRIEGO COLORADO NEWS COLLABORATIVE AND MEGAN VERLEE, CPR NewsAlot of Coloradans are worried about our democracy. And they want candidates to pay attention to it, too.
That is the message that comes through loud and clear from thousands of responses to the Voter Voices survey that Sentinel Colorado and dozens of other newsrooms around the state are circulating through this election year with the help of the Colorado News Collaborative.
‘Democracy / Good government’ was the top issue for voters who identified as moderate or liberal. For conservatives it comes further down, a distant third after immigration and cost of living.
But that simple selection covers a wide array of concerns, from money in politics to threats to personal liberties to politicians more worried about their careers than their constituents.
Many voters expressed frustration that the current, uncompromising tone of politics has made it increasingly impossible for the government — especially the federal government — to tackle what they see as the country’s biggest problems. They said they want candidates to focus on the issues, instead of attacks, and to show they’re willing to work with the other side.
Deborah Shaffer of Cedaredge wrote that she wants candidates to talk about “how they will move our country back to a centrist democracy and return to a spirit of compromise and cooperation so that the important issues of reasonable immigration, healthcare, fiscal responsibility, and the climate can be addressed.”
In an interview, Shaffer said she’s disheartened; it’s been a while since she felt like her federal votes were for a candidate she liked, instead of against one she fears.
“I’m going to be very honest and say, if I had my way, I would not vote for a single incumbent,” Shaffer said. “Not because I don’t think there are good people. I just think it isn’t working.”
Comments from Sentinel readers to the statewide survey
JTM: Do they have a plan to put the fringe voices and conspiracy theories on both the far left and far right back into the outskirts of the discussion, and quit allowing them to drive the train.
FG: Do you believe the 2020 Election was stolen?
LGM: How they will preserve Democracy instead of degrading the USA into Theocracy.
KR: Why is it so hard to have politicians actually talk to each other to try to get a solution to some problems?
CL: Immigration: what is their plan for securing the border and background checking those who are already here, illegally.
MK: Would you support electing Supreme Court justices rather than appointing by the president?
GE: I would like to hear some realistic solutions to the homelessness and migrant issues that address the problem without demeaning those impacted.
L: Local candidates about what they will do to reduce crime. State and Federal, I want to hear what they will do about spending and immigration issues.
OL: I’d like to hear more vision about how things are going to be better. I’d like to hear about plans to bring people together to work for the common good. I’d like to see candidates called out for partisanship and divisiveness.
MC: I want them to acknowledge that at all levels of government, legislation is passed mostly along party lines. I want to know what piece of legislation from the opposite party that they would work through with bipartisan compromise.
HG: What will you do to provide the police the support and funding they need to staff and train appropriately and ensure the safety of our citizens? How will you crack down on drug use and prevent the homeless from camping in public areas?
MSSH: How they will preserver democracy, insure all eligible individuals have the ability to vote, and every individual and business pays their share of taxes?
DK: I’m tired of not getting direct answers to questions. I want to know HOW they intend to do the things they promise. I want to know WHERE the money is coming from. And I want to KNOW how they intend to show the electorate the specifics of success.

Across the political spectrum, many respondents said they just don’t believe the people elected to represent them truly care about their concerns. The disillusionment and frustration expressed by Coloradans echo national trends; in a poll by Pew Research last year, 85% of respondents said politicians don’t care what regular people think and 80% said they feel frustrated or angry with the government.
The Voter Voices survey is also capturing the fears many voters — especially those who identify as liberal — have that the political opposition has evolved into a democratic threat.
Melissa McInerney said she wanted to put climate change or health care or the environment at the top of her list of priorities, but for now all those issues come second to her fears about what Republican control would mean for the federal government.
“There are so many other issues that I actually care about and I also want to see addressed, but they’re not going to mean a thing if we don’t vote for the right party and the right people,” said McInerney.
For their part, many respondents who identified themselves as conservative cast good government as limited government — writing that candidates should focus on what they’ll do to uphold the constitution, especially the First and Second Amendments.
“How they will give back freedoms to the people instead of taking it,” is what Michael Ruff of Eaton wants to hear from anyone seeking his vote. “The candidates are there to serve the people of Colorado, not to enact ‘feel good laws’ that usually have no effect, but instead, put over-reaching burdens and penalties on Citizens.”
Pessimism about the current political situation has Mike Orr of southwest Denver looking for big changes — he’d like to see much tougher rules for money in politics, and for the country to move toward ranked-choice voting.

“The idea that someone who would otherwise have no shot at being in office could have a shot, and especially if that person maybe has somewhat more moderate views or is from some other party than Republicans and Democrats, that’s huge to me,” said Orr.
Orr was one of nearly a dozen people in the survey who specifically brought up ranked choice voting (RCV), an approach where all candidates appear on the primary ballot, regardless of party, and voters rank them by preference. Colorado currently allowed local governments to adopt RCV for their elections, and there is a move afoot to ask voters to expand the practice to state elections. Currently, only two states — Alaska and Maine — use RCV statewide.
In addition to ranked choice voting, respondents across the political spectrum suggested term limits would help improve federal politics. That’s an idea the state has already embraced; most state-level officials may serve no more than eight years in office.
Dissatisfaction has some voters considering leaving the major parties behind this year, either for a third party, or an independent candidate like Robert Kennedy Jr. Valerie LeGore in Routt County said she feels like the major parties and their candidates aren’t respecting voters.
“We need to up the quality of the conversation, rather than one candidate reading off the cue cards and another one calling people names,” said LeGore. “We need to be really focused on the meat of the issues and the facts.”
For LeGore, good government starts with stringent election policies. A long-serving election judge, she believes county clerks do their best with the things that are within their control. But she distrusts many of Colorado’s election innovations, like universal mail ballots and automatic voter registration. She’d like to see the state move back to mostly in-person voting, with strict ID requirements.
“We should be using the standards that we do for flying
on airplanes and things like that,” said LeGore, “making sure people really are who they say they are.”
Without those policies in place, she feels like there’s an asterisk on the results of every election.
When it comes to confidence in elections, the Voter Voices survey reflects national trends. Only 11% of conservatives who filled out the survey said they are fully confident the election will be conducted fairly across the country. In contrast, just over 50% of liberals and moderates said they have faith in the national election.
Views are more positive across the board when it comes to Colorado’s handling of the vote. About 90% of liberals, 80% of moderates and 40% of conservatives said they fully trust votes will be counted fairly in their community.
While the survey is not a scientific poll, what it does make clear is that when voters say they want candidates to focus on democracy and good government, what they really mean spans the gamut of views and concerns. But it also lays bare a common thread — that they’re worried the nation’s current political leaders are failing to meet the challenges of the moment.
Shaffer, the Cedaredge voter who said that if she had her way she wouldn’t vote for either incumbent, said she’s not a very emotional person, but reflecting on the current political moment brings her to the verge of tears. At 74, her fears are really for the coming generations.
“I just feel so bad for people who are looking at this and saying, well, what’s my life going to be like under these circumstances?” she said. “I do believe in the ability of humanity to ultimately do the right thing. I just feel that right now it’s looking dim instead of hopeful.”

HOW TO NAVIGATE THE END OF YOUR PET’S LIFE
BY MARY CONLON, Associated PressDr. Lisa Walling’s first house call of the day was with a particularly fluffy hospice patient — a 13-year-old Newfoundland named Rugby.
Rugby happily licked a plate of peanut butter as Walling inserted needles along her back; acupuncture and a ketamine injection to help with pain and mobility problems.
How can I make my elderly pet more comfortable?
Hospice and palliative care veterinarians like Walling specialize in home visits, which can be a good option if transporting your pet to the vet’s office becomes too difficult.
getting up or going outside, Walling recommends a special harness that has front and rear handles.
Cats don’t struggle with slippery floors as much, but they do get arthritis. If your cat is having trouble stepping up into their litter box, it might be a good idea to get one that’s lower to the ground.

Dr. Lisa Walling greets her 13-year-old hospice patient, Rugby, a Newfoundland, in the dog’s home in Bedford, N.Y., on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. As an end-of-life care veterinarian, Walling considers both pet and owner to be her patients. She’s there to make sure animals are as comfortable as possible in their final days, and help humans through the difficult decision of knowing when it’s time to say good-bye. At a later visit, after Rugby had deteriorated further, she euthanized her surrounded by her family.
AP Photo/Mary ConlonAs an end-of-life care veterinarian, Walling considers both pet and owner to be her patients. She’s there to make sure animals are as comfortable as possible in their final days, and help humans through the difficult decision of knowing when it’s time to say goodbye.
“I find a lot of the time, the biggest part of my job is helping the owners,” said Walling. When it came time to euthanize Rugby at a later visit, the whole family was there.
There are a number of options available to help aging pets and their caregivers, including hospice and palliative care, at-home euthanasia and a growing number of socalled pet death doulas. But navigating decisions around the end of their life can still feel overwhelming. Here are some ways you can take care of your pet and yourself.
The International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care maintains a directory of its members.
Vets can prescribe medication to treat infections, pain and chronic conditions, and help with diet changes. But there are simple things owners can do themselves around the house to make their pet more comfortable.
As dogs age and their limbs become stiffer, slippery floors like hardwood and tile become difficult to walk on. Try putting carpet runners or yoga mats where your pet walks, and especially where they stand to eat. For breeds with longer hair, you can trim the fur off the bottom of their paws to give their pads more grip.
“We had to take all of the area rugs and patchwork our kitchen,” said Rugby’s owner, Sam Boege.
For larger dogs that need help
For both dogs and cats, try raising the food and water bowls so they don’t have to bend down as much.
How do you know when it’s time to say goodbye to your pet?
If medication and pain management aren’t relieving your pet’s suffering and you’re trying to decide if it may be time to let them go, look for signs like loss of appetite and difficulty breathing — and check with your vet.
“There is a spectrum of time when a euthanasia is an appropriate decision,” said Dr. Dani McVety, a veterinarian who founded Lap of Love, the country’s largest network of at-home euthanasia providers.
Lap of Love provides resources on its website that can be used to evaluate your animal’s quality of life.
Planning for at-home euthanasia can be a good choice for pets who aren’t experiencing immediate med-
ical emergencies. It’s smart to prepare ahead of time and understand how the procedure works so you can focus on your pet in their last days.
“You’re not shortening their life, you’re shortening their death,” Walling said.
Where to turn for emotional support at the end of your pet’s lifeYou don’t have to go through the end of your pet’s life alone.
The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement provides information on its website to help pet owners understand euthanasia and grief. Lap of Love offers pet loss support groups several times a week. There are also pet loss counselors, grief specialists and animal chaplains who offer one-on-one support.
Animal end-of-life doulas, or “death doulas,” offer emotional, spiritual and informational support around the time of death. They aren’t required to have medical training, but may work with veterinary providers. A doula can help owners process feelings of grief and loss or assist with practical steps like planning for final days.
“Everybody’s different,” said Lauren Seeley, a death doula based in New York City. “What I find is most people aren’t ready to deal with it until it’s already happened.”

Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure | In Place
Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure | In Place is an exhibition created from three projects photographer Fazal Sheikh made on the Colorado Plateau from 2017 to early 2023. Sheikh’s portraits and landscapes shed light on the far-reaching consequences of extractive industry and climate change.
The exhibition presents Sheikh’s recent work in three interrelated sections: Thirst is a new series of aerial photographs that document
the decline of the Great Salt Lake in northeast Utah, which is shrinking due to overconsumption and dwindling rain and snowfall. Exposure examines the impacts of uranium, coal, oil and natural-gas extraction on the American Southwest and on its Indigenous inhabitants. In Place evokes the enduring landscapes of the Bears Ears region in Utah, bringing Sheikh’s photographs together with contributions from scientists and Indigenous communities in and around Bears Ears in southeastern Utah.
Visitors will reflect upon the transformation—and often devastation—of these landscapes in the context of the past, present and future, while considering the juxtaposition of beauty and catastrophe, as well as intimate, human-scale stories and those spanning vast geological eras and changes.
