GOP lawmakers plunge into delirium with a letter to parents

race yourself, Colorado. The ludicrous fauxfight over White children in public schools being taught to hate themselves for how minorities and gays were treated by American settlers is about to move out from the realm of the far-right fringe that’s been creeping around school board meetings.

Who’s trying to expand this fear-mongering nonsense? The mainstream Republican Party of Colorado.

In a letter last week to “Colorado Parents” from Republican members of the Colorado House of Representatives, GOP state lawmakers offered this warning: “For years, Republicans have been warning about a radical leftist takeover of our children’s educational institutions, and those fears are finally being realized.”

More accurately, for decades, hysterical far-righteous types have wailed about liberal teachers trying to brainwash innocent children with evil notions about equality for women, tolerance for non-Judeo-Christian religions, understanding and acceptance of homosexuality and the danger and toxicity of racism.

Mostly, teachers remain overwhelmed just trying to get kids to learn to read, master a few math skills and keep their masks over their noses.

It’s all “radical,” perhaps, if you live in a commune where select women are forced to prominently wear a red letter “A” on their chests. But in a state where the governor is gay with husband and children, and in a town where the chief of police is gay, local Muslims run a large community center and make up part of the legislative coalition, and the death of Elijah McClain at the hands of Aurora police still permeates the public air, this is real life, not some kind of secret cabal.

Not so long ago, former Aurora-area state GOP Sen. John Andrews would not stop trying to get the state to force every public school to post the Ten Commandments in every classroom.

That really happened.

Andrews’ antics, however, paled to the circus show by former GOP State Rep. DAVE PERRY Gordon Klingenschmitt. While this Colorado Springs Republican, a former Navy Editor chaplain, aka Dr. Chapps on his YouTube channel, made a living — really — railing against liberals trying to bend the minds of children, his speciality defamation was against gay and lesbian people.

In 2014, Klingenschmitt stated that then-Congressman Jared Polis — who is Jewish, openly gay and now Colorado’s governor — wanted to execute Christians. He went on in his Colorado Springs clerical career to compare President Barack Obama to a demon that caused cancer. In 2015, after the Boy Scouts of America lifted their generations-old ban on gay scoutmasters, Klingenschmitt said it would lead to a hike in child sex assaults and ended his stellar career in politics by insisting that gay men should be banned from teaching because they are immoral.

Back then, most Republicans at least brushed all that off as at least crazy talk and some even pushed back, pointing out that it was all wrong, hurtful and dangerous.

Not anymore.

Clearly taking their lead from national Republicans, these state lawmakers believe they can gain some of the political ground they’ve lost in Colorado by parading around on the very stuff that has cost them so much political ground in Colorado.

Like Donald Trump and his far-right allies, these Colorado state lawmakers want you to believe that educators at your local schools are trying to bend history and young minds. They believe teachers are secretly trying to create an alternate reality in history and social studies classes about people of color in this country.

These Republicans are apoplectic in warning that history teachers here and across the country are determined to reveal an American history where minorities have gotten a bad shake at best, and they’ve sometimes been the targets of slavery, horrifying massacres, lynchings, red-linings and uncompromising discrimination.

My memory of learning about “American Indian” history in school was that everybody ate corn and turkey at a big community feast to create the first Thanksgiving back in the 1600s. From there, George Washington crossed the Delaware River and then we got electricity. In between, the “Indians” got their own nations, called “reservations.” Black people got civil rights and pinko commie hippies got kicked out of the country for protesting the Vietnam War. In college, history teachers filled in the blanks for me.

And now, I have an opportunity to regularly talk with educators about how history curricula are compiled and how they’re delivered to students.

Contemporary history and social studies curriculum doesn’t focus on telling you how it was, it seeks to answer questions about why things are the way they are.

Japan, with a massive economy and worldwide edge on innovation, has no nuclear weapons and no real military to speak of because of how World War II played out.

Local high-school curricula that complete the picture aren’t anti-Japanese or pro-American. Teachers just seek to answer the question about why Japan is so different from other Asian powerhouses.

Likewise, there is not now nor has there ever been a movement in public education to make White Americans feel guilty for the ways Black people were treated by slave owners and their proponents.

But public education has evolved and teaches even young children that our communities and our nation are a collection of people from all over the world.

Out here, we call this “Aurora.”

Colorado Republican lawmakers said in their letter to parents they are incensed that children as young as first graders explore how they are similar and sometimes different from their classmates because of their race, their ethnicity, religion, ability, gender and family structure.

“Children in these early grades are not equipped to engage with complex topics like these, topics that often confound even adults,” lawmakers say in their letter.

Maybe these Republian state reps are “confounded” by the idea that some of their peers are Black, or gay, or speak something other than English when the go home at night, but the kids are all right. They can, should, and do handle knowing that their pal Brian has two moms, either because his parents are gay or because they’re divorced and remarried.

Education using facts and reasoning creates tolerance and understanding, something this letter clearly is warning about and asking Colorado parents to politicize and fight against.

The letter goes on to lament how lacking the mastery of civics has become among the general population, something I can’t agree with more.

A perfect example is the myth among a vast majority of Republicans who think that Donald Trump could or did actually win the 2020 presidential election, or that the vice-president legally had the power to overturn the election and was wrong in not doing so.

Rather than stoke unfounded fears about the purpose and effect of public school history and social studies education and curricula, I suggest they actually shadow their kids in school, take the class and learn something.

That’s the date in February that the mask mandate in schools and public buildings for Aurora and much of the reason expires.

Local health officials say that because the rate of infection has decreased dramatically, even though it’s till relatively high, the region can no longer justify mandating masks in public.

The threat to women’s reproductive rights signals the need to act

A

bortion rights can no longer be a political afterthought in Colorado, or anywhere in the United States.

Eight years after former Colorado Sen. Mark Udall was scoffed at for focusing much of his campaign against Cory Gardner on the reproductive rights of women, the state, and the nation are now living the nightmare of his prophecy.

Udall, a Democrat, in running for re-election against Gardner, a Republican, focused much of his campaign and political advertising on warnings that, despite public apathy, women’s reproductive rights were essentially an election or two away from being erased.

Udall was spot on in warning that there was real and present danger in not making it a priority during campaigns and crucial court appointments to ensure candidates would ensure they protect women’s rights to retain control of their bodies.

As warned, talk of “settled law” and “court precedent” have become meaningless as state after state, and the very country, devolves into backward-nation status in refusing to ensure women enjoy the right to command their own medical care and reproductive decisions.

Instead, despite the fact that the majority of Americans want women to make their own decisions on birth control, not the government, it’s clear the Supreme Court, Republicans in Congress and state legislatures across the country are working fast to end decades-old women’s rights on those issues.

The problem isn’t theoretical or isolated: it’s a national crisis.

In the long term, Aurora Congressman Jason Crow and others are right about the next Congress needing to create legislation protecting the rights of women against capricious decisions by partisan members of the Supreme Court, or state legislators bent on upending the rights of women.

Candidates and proponents for American women must be vocal and at the front of the election to ensure candidates are forthright and honest about their commitment to legislate for women and not against them.

In the short term, however, Colorado lawmakers must guarantee that the rights of women here are protected from malevolent attempts to undermine them at a congressional, administrative, national court or state capitol level.

The best way to do that is by Colorado state lawmakers passing The Reproductive Health Equity Act, a measure that guarantees Colorado’s long-standing women’s reproductive rights are guarded by statute in addition to decades of precedence.

The measure states that every person in Colorado has a fundamental right to seek or refuse contraception, to terminate a pregnancy or carry it to term, and that fertilized eggs and fetuses are not assigned rights under state law, which would usurp the rights of every pregnant woman.

While Colorado abortion rights laws have long been upheld both by aggregate state lawmakers and voters alike, repeatedly, the danger of encroaching on those rights is very real now.

Abortion rights proponents point out that women’s reproductive rights have prevailed over 41 attempts in the state legislature to undermine them — just since 2010. Four ballot questions seeking to undermine reproductive rights have been rejected by voters since 2008.

Emboldened by gains in the Supreme Court, backward states like Texas and Mississippi, and extremists in Congress, Colorado voters have no choice but to shore up the authority of women here before setting out to ensure fellow citizens across the country enjoy the same freedom to control their bodies and decisions regarding pregnancy.

hen word spread last week about an imminent Supreme Court retirement, I hoped against hope that it would be Clarence Thomas.

No such luck.

Replacing Clinton appointee Stephen Breyer with a Biden appointee is really no biggie. Ridding the court of Clarence, and his blatant conflicts of interest, would be a major upgrade – at least in terms of repairing the court’s record-low reputation. Because for more than 20 years it has been an open secret, and a patent disgrace, that wife Ginni has been a right-wing activist working on a range of hot button issues on which hubby sits in judgement.

Perhaps it’s sheer coincidence that he was the lone dissenter in the 8-1 ruling that bars Donald Trump from blocking the release of documents about the Jan. 6 insurrection – the same event that Ginni agitated for on Facebook, the same event to which she helped send busloads of insurrectionists. At the very least, it sure looks bad. In fact, the official Code of Judicial Conduct, embedded in federal law, specifically states that “any justice, judge, or magistrate judges of the United States shall disqualify himself in any proceeding in which his impartiality might reasonably be questioned” by a reasonable, objective person.

Yup, the code says “any justice.” Problem is, the Supremes exempt themselves from the code.

There are no Supreme Court rules governing conflict of interest. The justices police themselves, which of course means that, in practice, they don’t police themselves at all. All other federal judges in all the lower courts are inhibited from putting themselves in any situation that might convey an appearance of impropriety. But not the nine folks at the top of the pyramid.

That’s long been a great deal for Clarence and Ginni. As far back as December 2000, while the high court was weighing whether to stop the Florida recount and award the White House to George W. Bush (which it did, with Clarence voting in the 5-4 majority), Ginni, as a staffer at the conservative Heritage Foundation, was already screening resumes for the incoming Bush administration. A decade later,

Clarence sat in judgement of Obamacare while Ginni was earning roughly $165,000 working for several groups that lobbied to repeal Obamacare. During the Trump administration, Ginni worked closely with (and was paid by) a prominent anti-immigrant activist who filed amicus briefs defending Trump’s Muslim travel ban – while Clarence was hearing cases about the travel ban.

The conflict of interest episodes are too numerous to list here. Suffice it to say that Clarence steadfastly refused to recuse himself, despite repeated demands over the years that he do so. It’s a blatant breach of judicial ethics – and the all-important perception of impartial justice – that he’s still on the bench when gay rights cases get debated (Ginni is on record railing against “transsexual fascists”), and when national security cases get weighed (Ginni is on record railing against “the Deep State”).

Last year, a bipartisan coalition of 107 law professors from 76 law schools asked Congress to require that all federal judges with perceived conflicts at least explain in writing the reasons why they’d refused to recuse themselves. A tepid reform, for sure. But right now Clarence doesn’t have to explain anything.

The only available constitutional remedy is for the House to target the guy with an impeachment probe. Democrats, who run the Judiciary Committee, could subpoena Ginni and ask pointed questions about her actions on behalf of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists. With that matter under investigation, Clarence might actually be compelled to recuse himself on all Jan. 6-related cases. But alas, as we all well know, hand-wringing Democrats shrink from that kind of hardball. So I suppose there’s only one solution.

President Biden, having pledged to replace Breyer with a well-qualified Black woman, should simply announce that his choice is Anita Hill. Having long survived Clarence Thomas’ sexual harassment, the attorney and law professor is rested and ready.

Perhaps forcing Clarence to share the bench with Hill would be sufficient impetus for him to quit.

n Aurora lawmaker is callBY MAX LEVY, Staff Writer ing for the censure of fellow Councilmember Danielle Jurisnky after she made a host of allegations during a Jan. 27 talk-radio interview and demanded the city’s police chief and deputy chief step down.

Councilmember Juan Marcano said that, by publicly telling the two to resign, Jurinsky violated a section of the city’s charter that prohibits councilors from meddling in the appointment of employees who fall under the authority of the city manager.

Marcano has started official procedures regarding the alleged charter violation, which, according to the charter, will result in a public hearing and consideration for censure.

When asked by KNUS host Steffan Tubbs during his afternoon talk show how the city could fix the problem of officer shortages and turnover within the Aurora Police Department, Jurinsky said, “We remove the chief immediately, and with her takes out the trash of the deputy chief of police, Darin Parker.”

She went on to talk about a lunch meeting with police chief Vanessa Wilson where she encouraged Wilson to remove Parker.

“I said, ‘Even a bigger problem than you, chief, may be your appointed deputy police chief,’” Jurinsky told Tubbs. “‘He may be the bigger problem. What do you think about, as a show of faith, you know, that you mean business, and you want to change, and you want to stop losing all of these officers on your watch, why don’t we reappoint someone else and try to start fresh?’”

Jurinsky said Wilson considered her suggestion but did not act on it. Chris Amsler, executive officer to chief Wilson, disputed Jurinsky’s account of the meeting in

a statement Feb. 1.

“They both share a desire to improve morale and retention at the police department,” he wrote of Jurinsky and the chief. “However, (Wilson) takes direction on employment matters from city management in accordance with the city charter. Chief Wilson did not consider removing Deputy Chief Parker from his position.”

Telling Tubbs’ listeners, “You are not safe in Aurora,” Jurinsky also accused Wilson and Parker of mistreating officers and turning a blind eye to misconduct, referring to Wilson as “trash.”

She described an incident in which she said an APD lieutenant was promoted to the role of interim division chief shortly after crashing a city vehicle while drunk, and said another officer “drank himself to death” after Wilson made comments publicly about his personal life and marriage.

“She’s trash,” Jurinsky said. “Chief Vanessa Wilson is trash.”

The council member later identified the former lieutenant as Martin Garland and the officer as Javen Harper.

Regarding Garland — who retired in lieu of termination in December after telling internal affairs investigators he drank two to four beers, got behind the wheel of an unmarked police car and crashed it into an unknown vehicle or object — Amsler said the former lieutenant “never received a formal promotion” after the incident, which happened in October.

“It is common practice in the police department for employees in lower ranks to serve in an acting role when their immediate supervisor or manager is away for an extended period of time,” he wrote. “An employee serving in an acting role is a point of contact for that branch of the organization and is not authorized to make policy

or personnel decisions.”

Details about Harper’s marriage and abuse of alcohol were made public in internal affairs documents, after he was fired in 2020 for showing up to work intoxicated. According to an obituary on the website of a Strasburg funeral home, Harper died in June 2021 of “natural causes.”

When asked what information about Harper’s personal life was shared by the chief, Jurinsky said she was referring to the fact that the department had released the internal affairs documents, which Amsler noted are public record.

“It has never been the intention or desire of Chief Wilson’s administration to embarrass anyone,” Amsler wrote in another part of his email. “As Chief Wilson has stated since she was named chief and will restate on any matter regarding past terminations, being transparent regarding issues of officer misconduct is paramount for rebuilding trust and legitimacy with our community.”

Mayor Mike Coffman pushed back against Jurinsky’s comments that Aurorans aren’t safe in their own community in a statement released Jan. 28.

“While it is true that the crime rate has increased in parts of our city, the blanket assertion that Aurora is an unsafe community is just not true,” he said. “Like other major U.S. and Colorado cities, there has been an unfortunate increase in crime. It is OK for us to acknowledge this without creating an unnecessary sense of fear throughout our community.”

He acknowledged the staff shortages and other challenges facing the police department, though Coffman said officers in specialized units were being reallocated to patrol to keep up with calls for service when necessary, which Jurinsky also mentioned.

City council makes key commission appointments Lori Gimelshteyn and Michael Seufert were appointed to Aurora’s Election Commission this week, over objections from council progressives that only Gimelshteyn came with a recommendation from commissioners.

Councilmember Francoise Bergan moved to appoint Michael Seufert in place of former city clerk and recommended reappointee Debra Johnson, saying “it’s my prerogative to appoint anyone who applied” and that “after reviewing the resumes, my motion was for Lori and Michael.”

After questioning Bergan about her motion, Councilmember Alison Coombs moved instead to appoint Johnson and another applicant who had not been recommended, Arnie Schultz — that motion failed 4-7, with Coombs, Juan Marcano, Ruben Medina and Crystal Murillo in favor.

Seufert works as a program lead for a management consulting firm and wrote in an application attached to the council’s agenda that he previously served as a registration judge in Denver County during the 2020 general election and as a precinct committeeman and vice precinct committeeman for several years in Indiana.

Johnson is retired but served for a decade as Aurora’s clerk and eight years as Denver’s clerk, during which time she helped manage and administer elections.

Bergan’s motion to appoint Gimelshteyn and Seufert passed 7-4, with Coombs, Marcano, Medina and Murillo opposed.

The Election Commission’s responsibilities include recommending ward boundaries, establishing precincts, appointing election judges and breaking tie votes in municipal elections by lot.

During the selection of Planning

and Zoning Commission members, Coombs and Murillo also debated the legitimacy of a motion by Bergan to reappoint Becky Hogan and appoint Garrett Walls at the same time. Regardless, the appointments passed unanimously.

A motion by Murillo to appoint Alexandra Jackson failed 4-7 on the same split. Marcano moved to appoint Stephen Elkins, but a substitute motion by Bergan to delay the vote on the remaining vacancy to try and attract more applicants passed instead 10-1, with Coombs opposed.

Mask mandate expires Feb. 4 Tri-County Health Department’s public health orders requiring masks in indoor spaces and schools will be allowed to expire Friday, Feb. 4, at which time public health officials believe that case rates will be much lower than they were in early January.

The Tri-County Board of Health, which now consists only of representatives from Adams and Arapahoe county, had a meeting Jan. 31 to discuss the orders. The board passed a mask mandate for school districts and childcare facilities in August, and just before Thanksgiving joined other metro counties in passing an indoor mask mandate due to strained hospital capacity and high levels of the delta variant.

Now, health officials say the state of the pandemic in the region

has reversed, with case counts falling dramatically.

“They’re frankly more dramatic than anyone expected,” Tri-County executive director Dr. John Douglas said of the decline in COVID-19 case rates.

Douglas presented to the board on the current health data, and shared that after the omicron variant caused a surge in cases in late December and early January, cases have fallen steadily for the past two weeks and are projected to be on an ongoing downward trajectory.

Two weeks ago each county had a 7-day incidence rate of about 1,500 cases per 100,000 people, Douglas said. On Jan. 31, each was in the 500s range.

That’s “nothing short of an unprecedentedly dramatic drop,” he said.

The health department also estimates that currently about 75% of the population is immune to the omicron variant, either through vaccination or natural immunity due to being infected. Because of omicron’s highly contagious nature, people who are unvaccinated have already contracted the virus or can expect to contract it in the near future, Douglas said.

“There is a very high likelihood that a very large fraction unless they were really completely sequestered, got infected with omicron during the past month,” he said of the unvaccinated.

Based on current projections he said that by mid-February over 80% of the population is expected to be immune, and that by Feb. 10 transmission could fall from “high” to “moderate,” defined as fewer than 50 cases per 100,000.

The department initially passed the indoor mask mandate to protect hospital capacity, which was threatened in the fall by significant numbers of people becoming seriously ill. The order was initially supposed to stay in place until hospital ICU ca-

pacity in the region was above 10% for two weeks.

That target has not been reached yet, but Douglas said since Jan. 16 hospital capacity has had its greatest sustained increase since before Thanksgiving. And because so many people are now immune, transmission of the virus is much less tied to hospitalization than it was in the fall.

On a practical level, enforcement of the mask mandate has also become more difficult to control.

There is more compliance fatigue in the community, and the department does not have the capacity to enforce the mandate everywhere it is in place.

In one slide of a powerpoint presentation he included photos of local school sporting events, which included many maskless fans.

After strict adherence in the early going of the pandemic, masks have become very much a hit-ormiss proposition at local high school sporting events in recent weeks.

The winter prep season has seen masks required for entry and to take the floor in sports like boys and girls basketball, but largely have been worn improperly or removed during competition with little to no enforcement from officials or host schools. Most referees have done away with wearing masks as well.

There is no perfect time to end the mandate, Douglas said, but as time goes on society will have to transition from viewing COVID-19 as a pandemic to treating it as an endemic disease.

Ultimately, he recommended to the board that both mandates be allowed to expire on Friday, Feb. 4.

Future public health orders are not off the table if other variants appear, he cautioned.

School superintendents Chris Gdowski from Adams 12 and Rico Munn from Aurora Public Schools joined the meeting to discuss how this would affect schools. Both said their districts have other measures in place that they can use to help protect students who are at higher medical risk without a mandate, including managing where students are seated and using portable air filtration devices. (APS also has a vaccine requirement for employees.)

The district has been working over the past several months to accommodate students who cannot wear masks for medical reasons, so “to a degree we will flip those conversations,” Munn said. Students’ needs will be handled on a case-bycase basis, he said.

The motion passed 5-1, with Rosanna Reyes the one dissenting member. Reyes suggested during the meeting that the expiration date be pushed back a week so that schools would have more lead time to prepare, but did not garner any other supporters.

Julie Mullica acknowledged that the decision was not easy, and that the board has received hundreds of emails from people on both sides of the issue.

Local students will still be required to wear masks on school buses, as that mandate is being enforced at the federal level.

Council questions natural gas rule The majority of Aurora City Council members said last week they want the state to scrap a rule that would have developers and homebuyers pick up the entire tab for new gas infrastructure.

Currently, when building out natural gas pipelines to serve new developments, builders receive a 28% credit from Xcel Energy. A proposed state rule would eliminate that credit, part of a broader rulemaking effort to phase out fossil fuels and push utilities to hit targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

But some Aurora lawmakers and staff said the environmental benefits of the rule wouldn’t be worth the immediate financial impact on homebuyers, specifically in neighborhoods that are under construction.

“It’s going to hit those neighborhoods pretty hard,” said Brandon Dittman, outside utility counsel for the city. “Ultimately, the homeowners will assume (it) as an unanticipated cost.”

While council conservatives mostly questioned the impact that the rule could have on affordable housing in the city, progressives stressed the importance of lowering emissions.

“The purpose of this not only is to disincentivize natural gas, which is polluting, but it also incentivizes land use,” councilmember Alison Coombs said, arguing it would cut down on urban sprawl. “Sprawling development has massive impacts on our climate and on our infrastructure costs as a city.”

Even some supporters of the rule, including Coombs, said they would like to see it modified to grandfather in projects that are currently underway, as the wording suggests the credit would be axed immediately.

Ultimately, the majority of members said they supported moving forward a letter to the state in which they would ask the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to get rid of the proposed rule, preserving the credit.

“We already have high home prices,” councilmember Francoise Bergan said. “I think this is going to put an extra burden on those who are looking for affordable housing in our area.”

Coombs and councilmembers Juan Marcano, Ruben Medina and Crystal Murillo said they would not support eliminating the rule completely.

The shooting occurred inside a residence in the 15800 block of East 13th Place, police said. Neither of the two shooting victims were identified, and police said there was no suspect description.

Police said later that both the man and the boy are expected to survive their injuries.

This appeared to be the fifth shooting in three days in Aurora. Police have reported about 36 shootings in Aurora this month.

Woman shot in leg An unidentified woman was shot in the leg and injured by a man who then ran east on East Colfax Avenue near Beeler Street at about 11 :30 a.m. on Jan. 31, police said.

The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive the shooting, Aurora police said in a tweet.

The shooting suspect was describe to police as a Black male.

No other details about the circumstances of the shooting or a description of a suspect were provided.

Police and Sentinel staff reporters said there is a heavy police presence in the area.

At the scene, a woman approached police and said a man was being held hostage at a motel across the street. Police spokesperson Matthew Wells-Longshore told the Sentinel that there was no hostage situation, but that the motel was in the process of getting two guests to leave.

Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.

Weekend crash kills 2 Two men were killed Saturday evening in traffic collisions that sent three others to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Aurora police.

The names of the two people killed have not been released, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

At 6:43 p.m., officers responded to a report of an injury crash on the East Stephen D. Hogan Parkway between East Sixth Avenue and South Picadilly Road.

When they arrived, they found a 60-year-old man dead and an 18-year-old woman in serious condition amid crashed cars.

Investigators said it appears the woman’s Honda Pilot was traveling west on Hogan Parkway when it crossed over the centerline, striking the eastbound Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by the man, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

Alcohol and drugs were not believed to have been a factor, police said in a press release, adding that

the investigation was open and no one had been arrested.

A few minutes after the Hogan Parkway crash, at around 6:45 p.m., police responded to another injury crash at East Iliff Avenue and South Tower Road.

They found a 61-year-old man deceased and the 25-year-old driver of the other vehicle and his 19-yearold passenger seriously hurt.

Investigators say the 61-year-old was driving south on Tower Road in his Chevy Equinox and attempted to make a left turn in front of the Chrysler 300 being driven north by the other man, causing the crash.

Excessive speed is being evaluated as a possible contributor to the incident.

Hogan Parkway and parts of the intersection of Iliff and Tower were closed for several hours while police investigated the crashes.

One dead in weekend shooting A man was killed and a 17-yearold girl wounded in separate shootings early Sunday, police reported on social media.

Police said in a Twitter post at 1:59 a.m. that the 17-year-old had been shot while somewhere in the 3100 block of South Halifax Street in southeast Aurora.

The girl’s identity and details surrounding the shooting were not released.

They later said she was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and that the circumstances of the shooting and identity of the suspect or suspects remained under investigation.

Police said that later Sunday morning, officers were called to a shooting in northwest Aurora, where a man was shot and later died from his injuries.

Police said the man was shot at about 5 a.m. while inside a residence on the 1500 block of Dallas Street, near East Colfax Avenue.

“Investigators believe that there was a gathering at the residence when shots were fired and the man was struck,” police said later in a statement. No suspects were identified.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital and died from the gunfire injures.

The slain man’s identify will be released at a future date by the Adams County coroner office.

No arrests were said to have been made, and the suspect or suspects were said to still be at large.

Kellner launches AG bid Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney John Kellner, a Republican, announced last week he will run to unseat Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser this fall.

Kellner said in a news release that he will run on a platform of making Colorado “safer” and that Weiser has “failed” in his first term.

“Colorado needs an attorney general who is willing to lead from the front — and that is why today I am announcing my campaign for Colorado attorney general,” Kellner said in a statement to the press. “I will not let politics get in the way of the strong leadership necessary to turn the tide on Colorado’s crime wave.”

Kellner joined the Cold Case Unit in the district attorney’s office in 2013 and was sworn in as District Attorney in January 2021. He beat Democrat Amy Padden for the spot in 2020, winning 50.1% of the vote.

When elected, Kellner was set to serve as the final DA of the 18th as it is currently arranged. Arapahoe County will be parceled out of the jurisdiction, which currently covers about 88% of Aurora, beginning in 2025. Voters in Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties will elect a new DA in 2024 for the new 23rd Judicial District.

As of Thursday, only one other

person — Robert Barbrady of the American Constitution Party — had filed paperwork to challenge Weiser, a Democrat. Weiser’s reelection campaign has raised more than $2.6 million so far, according to the Colorado Secretary of State’s website. Kellner has not yet reported any contributions.

Previously, Kellner served five years on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, including a deployment to Afghanistan as a deputy judge advocate. He graduated from the law school at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Kellner was born in Virginia. He resigned from active duty military service in 2011 but still serves in the Marine Corps Reserves. Kellner accepted a job as a prosecutor in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office after returning to civilian life.

In 2016, he was named “prosecutor of the year” by the Colorado District Attorney’s Council.

The state’s top attorney is elected every four years. Responsibilities of the post include investigating government agencies accused of breaking the law or violating the state or federal constitution.

Recently, Weiser’s office found that Aurora police were using force disproportionately against residents of color and that paramedics had administered sedatives inappropriately. The agencies have since agreed to a framework for reforms in the state’s first of its kind consent decree.

In 2018, Weiser defeated Kellner’s predecessor in the DA’s office,

Boy, 16, charged in Nome Park shooting A 16-year-old boy is facing numerous attempted murder charges in connection with a Nov. 15 shooting in Nome Park, which left six Aurora Central High School students injured.

Investigators said the shooting appears to have been the result of a conflict among students belonging to groups and possibly some kind of gangs.

Daniel Ruelas, 16, was charged Wednesday in 18th Judicial District Court with 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder, a class 2 felony; three counts of first-degree assault, a class 3 felony; one count of possession of a handgun by a juvenile, a class 2 misdemeanor and sentencing enhancers including use of a deadly weapon and causing serious bodily injury.

Ruelas, a minor, was identified because he is being charged as an adult. District attorney officials justified charging him as an adult because of the nature and gravity of the alleged crimes. The Sentinel is including the boy’s identity, which is available to the public, to ensure clarity in news about the case and also because of the nature of the crime.

Ruelas was one of four boys arrested in December in connection with the shooting, which took place across the street from Aurora Central High School two days before three students were wounded in a shooting in the parking lot of Hinkley High School. The incident has prompted a bevy of public conver-

sations and comments on youth violence.

The other three suspects, all 15-year-old boys, have not been identified.

According to an arrest affidavit, witnesses to the shooting told police that at about 12:45 p.m. two cars drove up to the park. One of the cars had its windows rolled down, and several people with masks covering their faces started firing out of it.

Four students were transported to Children’s Hospital Colorado with gunshot wounds, one of whom had an injury so severe it was reported he could potentially lose his leg, according to the affidavit. Two other victims drove themselves to local hospitals.

Police identified the cars involved in the shooting as a Black Chevy Tahoe and a Black Chrysler 300 through witness interviews and camera footage.

Police interviewed a student who said he had been jumped in a fight at Nome Park the week before and wanted a fair rematch, without weapons, that day during lunch.

He went to the park with his friend, who had enlisted some additional backup from a group called the Polo Gang, according to the affidavit.

About nine of the gang members were standing next to a minivan by the park.

Aurora police have said previously that they are trying to determine what type of gangs these are, as they do not appear to be related to traditional sects of Bloods, Crips, Asian and Mexican gangs, often driven by drug sales and other organized crime.

While waiting, the student saw two cars start to circle and thought the other participant in the fight was in one of them. They exchanged

texts and he asked why the cars were circling but did not get an answer. The Chrysler then came to a stop and several people began firing out of it, the affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, police interviewed one of the other suspects, who was in the Chevy Tahoe.

The suspect said he was in the car driving around with his friend, looking for the person his friend was supposed to fight.

The suspect said some of their other friends approached in the Chrysler, and that he, Ruelas and several other people got in the Chrysler. He said that Ruelas had a rifle that he had stolen from a home safe earlier that year, along with a handgun.

The suspect said the group saw the gang members by the minivan and thought that they were armed.

They approached the group and rolled down the windows, and as several of the gang members approached the car they opened fire.

The suspect said he “thought his friends started shooting because they feared the approaching males were going to shoot them.”

Several people said that the gang members returned fire, the affidavit said. A search of the Chrysler conducted by police found a bullet hole in the truck lid.

Another suspect in the car said that they were on speakerphone with the people in the Chevy Tahoe, and they had told them to start shooting, the affidavit said.

Ruelas was identified out of a photo lineup by several of the victims as one of the shooters, according to the affidavit.

He is next scheduled to appear in Arapahoe County District court on July 20, according to the DA’s office.

“I did not direct anything,” she said. “Juan Marcano can do whatever he wants. … I’m not concerned about this. I knew it was only a matter of time before we came head to head.”

Section 3-10 of Article III of Aurora’s charter states: Neither the council nor any of its committees or members shall direct or request the appointment of any person to, or his removal from, employment by the city manager, or in any manner take part in the appointment or removal of employees in the administrative service of the city, except as otherwise provided in this Charter.

The council and its members shall deal with that portion of the administrative service for which the city manager is responsible solely through the manager, and neither the council nor any member thereof shall give orders to any employee of the city either publicly or privately.

Any violation of the provisions of this section by a member of the council shall constitute misconduct and shall be punishable in such manner as may be in the discretion of the other members of the council.

Marcano also accused her of

“verging on defamation of character” and violating a section of the council’s rules of order and procedure, which state, “When interacting with City employees or members of the general public, individual Council Members shall conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.”

According to council rules, a council member may be censured for violating those rules, the charter or city code after a public hearing.

City spokesman Ryan Luby forwarded a copy of the letter sent

by Marcano on Jan. 28 that initiated the censure process. Twothirds of the council would have to vote to affirm that the violation took place before Jurinsky could be formally censured and disciplined.

When asked whether he was concerned about establishing a supermajority in favor of the censure, given the council’s recent conservative shift, Marcano said he had considered his situation, but that he would move forward regardless.

“It is definitely something I have thought about, but I hope they would put the city charter above politics,” he said.

On Jan. 28, Marcano insisted that Jurinsky’s public call for Wilson and Parker to be removed violated the charter’s requirement that council members generally deal with the hiring and firing of employees through the city manager, currently Jim Twombly.

“He’s the only person we can speak to having to do with staff issues,” Marcano said. “That basically is a direct violation of our city charter.”

Aurora functions as a council-manager government. The city council makes policy and appoints the city manager, who is the chief executive and top supervisor of all employees, including the chief of police.

Jurinsky said her statements did not run afoul of the charter, and said she had not called on Twombly to dismiss Wilson and Parker.

ebruary 1st marked the beginning of the Lunar New Year. People around the world said goodbye to the Year of the Ox and ushered in the Year of the Tiger.

Frequently called “Chinese New Year,” the Lunar New Year is celebrated during the second new moon after the winter solstice, and is observed in China and many other Asian countries, as well as by Asian immigrant communities across the globe.

“It is a great time to be together with family and loved ones to celebrate the past year and welcome in the new year,” Harry Budisidharta, director of Aurora’s Asian Pacific Development Center, said of the holiday. “A lot of the performances and the food revolve around bringing in wealth, good luck and blessings upon yourselves and your family.”

An animal from the Chinese zodiac system is assigned to each year, repeating every 12 years.

The tiger was last seen in 2010 and 1998. The feline is associated with courage and strength in Chinese mythology — positive qualities after two years that have demanded much of both.

and hold parties. Children traditionally receive red envelopes containing money, which symbolize good luck and prosperity for the coming year. Many places also have firework displays or large parades. With the arrival of the pandemic, which was starting to significantly spread in China just as the 2020 new year was ushered in, many of those celebrations were canceled or much more subdued.

The loss of opportunities to express cultural pride was keenly felt in America, too, as hate crimes against Asian-Americans spiked during the pandemic, driven in many instances by the racist rhetoric around the origins of COVID-19.

As the pandemic wanes, the opportunity to spend time with loved ones and celebrate Asian heritage is that much more important, Budisidharta said.

“It’s a good way to showcase your pride and to celebrate the good things about the culture,” he said.

Growing up in Indonesia, Budisidharta’s family did not celebrate Lunar New Year because the government did not allow the country’s ethnic Chinese population to observe the holiday or practice other Chinese customs. Now he enjoys the opportunity to spend time with family, and said he’s looking forward to sharing the holi-

day’s traditions with his two-year-old son as he grows up.

“Kids love the lucky red envelope because you get money!” he said.

There are several opportunities this week to welcome the new year in Aurora. At 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 Sharetea Aurora at 2495 S. Havana Street will have a celebration complete with a lion dance and fireworks. It will also unveil a new drink for the occasion and include gifts with each purchase while supplies last.

At 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 at Stanley Marketplace, the Colorado Asian Cultural Heritage Center will hold a lion dance and drum performance.

Festivities will continue inside at Chi Lin Asian Eatery, where red envelopes will be handed out.

In Denver, the Far East Center will be holding a celebration outside Truong An Gifts at 333 S. Federal Blvd. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 5 and 6 stop by for lion dances and martial arts displays.

And if you can’t make it to any celebrations, you can always mark the occasion by eating in or getting takeout from one of Aurora’s many locally owned Asian restaurants. Just remember to tip well — or else you might get a year of bad luck.

That’s the question in the Aurora Fox Theater’s latest production, “Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea.” Through humor, wordplay and poetry, Dontrell Jones III searches the Atlantic Ocean for answers about his heritage lost during the Middle Passage, though it’s his family that isn’t quite ready to surrender him to the sea. The 90-minute production, a heartfelt social commentary, debuted in 2014 at the Source Festival in Washington DC. It quickly won over patrons and critics, who said it “illuminates a corner of the human condition and will change the way we understand a hero in the context of his family.” The production is the third of the Fox’s 37th season.

Tarot is the ancient practice of telling future and fortune through divine guidance via a deck of vibrant cards. Anthony illuminates these old photos and layers them with vibrant botanical imagery. The finished products are as refreshing as they are bold, creating a new narrative that weaves together history, art, storytelling and life’s journey.

A Decade of Discovery: Clyfford Still in Denver

here’s no arguing that just about everyone near and far these days has a taste for respite.

The ceaseless effects of the pandemic.

The endless political maelstrom. Inflation. Wildfires and even traffic seem to have worn everyone down.

While you can’t eat your way to tranquility, most people feel they can and want to try.

Possibly the most uncomfortable the entire nation has been simultaneously for generations, maybe ever, the notion of comfort food alone is, well, comforting.

Sentinel staff writers reached out across the community, and the world, this week, seeking thoughts, recommendations and deliberations on how best, if at all, to eat your way to some definition of happiness.

Fried, mashed and under hot gravy aren’t for everyone. Read on and find out what these eight people you might know have to say about foods that can bring you personal calm in the shared storm.

Adrian Miller | Author and Historian Black-eyed peas, turnip and mustard greens, ham hocks and other Southern delights filled the dinner table of Adrian Miller’s childhood. Born in Denver to a mother from Tennessee and a dad from Arkansas, the food historian and former Clinton White House adviser was steeped from a young age in the culinary tradition of soul food.

“That was my foundational cuisine,” he said, as he remembered working with his mother in the kitchen of their Aurora home. “I’m a big fish fan, and she used to make fried catfish with coleslaw and some kind of white bread, maybe some greens.”

Fish was a Friday treat in the Miller household. On holidays, the family would cook a savory, Southern-style barbecue spread of pork spare ribs, chicken and hot link sausages.

“The greatest expression was Thanksgiving, so you’d have the turkey, and then a bunch of soul food side dishes and desserts,” Miller said. “And on New Year’s Day, we always did greens.”

It wasn’t until law school that Miller said he started to develop a passion for cooking on his own. Later, after his stint as an adviser for the Clinton administration, he would pick up the book which he said sparked his interest in researching the origins of soul food — “Southern Food: At Home, on the Road, in History,” by John Egerton.

“The comprehensive history of black achievement in American cookery still waits to be written,” Egerton said in 1987 about the forgotten cultural contributions of America’s Black chefs.

“That book was 14 years old, and still no one had written that history,” Miller said. “From there, I started doing research and contacting people.”

Soul food wasn’t considered distinct from Southern cuisine as a whole prior to the 1960s, Miller said. But as Black migrants carried the traditions of Southern cooking with them out of the South, reimagining classic dishes with local ingredients, it became recognized as a unique piece of Black cultural heritage.

“When you’re a migrant, and you get to the new place, you try to recreate home,” Miller said. “Soul food is really about that dynamic of taking Southern food out of the south and recreating it in other places.”

Miller published his research as a book, “Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time,” which was awarded by the James Beard Foundation in 2014.

The phenomenon of people seeking comfort in cooking and familiar foods isn’t new — after 9/11, Miller said Southern cooking and barbecue “exploded in popularity.”

“Now, though, I think there’s just a lot more interest in food, period, and people are doing more cooking,” he said. “Some of that is cooking from TV. But I’m finding anecdotally, just talking to my friends who have kids, their kids are more interested in cooking.”

And while his mother died about six years ago, Miller said he still finds comfort over a plate of black-eyed peas, greens and smoked turkey, his own innovation — he said his mother would have used ham hocks.

“It reminds me of her,” he said. “All of those feelings are evoked. … It tastes good, and it’s delicious, but it also reminds me of home.”

Settle in. Mick Bolger is talking this comfort cuisine thing through.

A musician, poet, artist, teacher and appreciator of the profound, he mulls memories, flavors and ideas around as he talks in the evening from his countryside home in Ireland, not far from the sea.

He moved there at the start of the pandemic from north Aurora, where he and his wife, Jean, had made a home and a life filled with Irish music, big ideas and a lot of laughs.

He considers the idea of using food to leverage tranquility or as a salve for what cruelty this turbulent life inflicts, some days worse than others. The thoughts and words roll off his tongue in a soothing Irish pace, his accent tamed by years of life in the United States.

He, and his band, Colcannon, became a force here, interpreting traditional Irish song, sung in lilty English or the more gruff Gaelic.

As far as food that brings just a serious sense of satisfaction, that was easy.

“I’d kill for a good smothered burrito,” Mick said. In Aurora, one of his favorite haunts was Real de Minas, where a tortilla wrapped around a boat-sized helping of moist rice, rich beans, and piquant chicken floated in a seat of gripping green chili.

The heat from the Colorado chilis, like that of the local Thai specialties, is “like a narcotic experience.” he said. Mouthfuls of pleasurable pain pumping endorphins through your veins and creating a sensual sweat at the top of your head.

Mick said his recent hopes for something like that in County Cork were dashed.

They’d made a rare venture out into the world of pandemic there to see Rembrant etchings at the Crawford Gallery and stumbled upon a Mexican restaurant.

It was ghastly, he said.

“The refried beans had raisins in them.”

Ewwww.

It sort of looked like a burrito, he said. Rather than green chili or salsa, it had some kind of tomato sauce on it that tasted like marinara sauce.

“I miss good Mexican food,” he said with a soft lament.

But as far as seeking out something incredibly satisfying to assuage some fear, some angst or some tribulation, he thinks that could be a very non-Irish notion.

“You’ve got to remember that Ireland was essentially a third-world country until the 1980s,” he said.

The idea of elevating food as a conditioner or operative seems, well, “gluttonous,” he said.

Not that he and all his fellow Irish friends and families don’t appreciate good stuff and a taste of the good life, but the experience is had for the moment, not so much carried years into the future and resurrected as a way to reel in comfort.

Except, maybe, for one thing. Christmas.

Christmas at the Bolger house wasn’t at all like that of his Irish neighbors. When he was just an infant, his father, an agricultural instructor in a program similar to Colorado’s cooperative extensions operated by universities, took a job in Nigeria in the 1950s, and the family went, too.

They were introduced, living in what would one day become Biafra, to Palm Oil Chop.

“It is extraordinary,” Mick said.

A centuries old tradition in West Africa, the dish is essentially a sumptuous stew made from chicken or sometimes beef. It packs a whopping punch of flavors that come from spices, chilis and local herbs, similar to a red Indian curry, but not.

Fried in red palm oil, the dish is served with rice and a variety of “side dishes.” These can range from anything like chopped fresh tomatoes or cucumbers to extravagant chutneys or nuts or dessicated coconut.

The magic, and Mick’s memory, hovers on trying different combinations of accoutrements on the rice with

the stew.

“Did you try the apple with the nuts and coconut?” he and his siblings would marvel on Christmas Day as they spent hours working through the feast, sometimes with friends.

It was filling, fun and — memorable.

His sister to this day has “the curry” for Christmas every year, mixing up the sides to keep the experience traditional but contemporary.

He does, too.

Would he ever create the feast to fill a place in his head that needed his family or just remembering a good time?

Probably not.

He’s living in the moment right now. The moment sometimes takes him to a favorite haunt not far from his new home that sports what the Irish have perfected: fish and chips.

The fish, from just down the road at the edge of the bay, can’t be fresher. The batter boasts just the perfect level of caramel-colored crispy, salty crunch but stays ever so slightly tender against the firm, sweet fish. The chips aren’t the giant flourary misfits that the sad English and lost Americans seem to prefer. Nor are they the overcooked shoestring varieties the French fawn over.

Like so much in modern Ireland, they’re just right.

The Irish staple dinner doesn’t need to conjure fond memories when it’s so much more enjoyable to just make them.

Harry Budisidharta | Executive Director of the Asian Pacific Development Center For Harry Budisidharta, comfort food is what he remembers eating when he was young.

“When I go to one of the Asian supermarkets like H Mart, I usually fill up my shopping cart with snacks and junk food from my childhood,” he said. “It’s a terrible thing to have the appetite of a 9-year-old but a grown man’s budget.”

He loves flavored potato chips, particularly shrimp and squid. He also loves instant noodles, especially the Indomie brand.

“I ate those quite a bit as a kid and I love eating them now, especially during a cold snowstorm like this,” he said Tuesday as snow blanketed Aurora.

Fried chicken is also a favorite of his, whether it’s from Popeyes, KFC or a local joint.

As director of the Asian Pacific Development Center, Budisidharta works to empower the local Asian American and Pacific Islander community. He praises Aurora for having one of the best, if not the best, selections of Asian restaurants in Colorado. Much of that is due to the significant number of immigrants and refugees living in the city, but he also credits the city council and chamber of commerce for their work bringing restaurants in.

The pandemic has not been easy on mom-and-pop restaurants, he said, many of which had a harder time getting relief and staying open than large chains.

“I think it’s turning around now, but I’m sure if you ask they will say it’s still a struggle for them,” Budisidharta said.

Some of his personal favorite restaurants in the city are Dae Gee Korean BBQ, Katsu Ramen and Angry Chicken, all of which are located in the 1900 block of South Havana Street.

“That’s a very deadly shopping complex for me,” he said.

Mike Coffman | Aurora Mayor Oftentimes, comfort foods are a thing of necessity, a way to salvage some sort of normalcy during tough times. That was the case for Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, though it came about differently for him than most others.

As the virus tore through communities and restaurants were forced to close their dining rooms, Coffman took to takeout orders and his Twitter account to offer a solution: Patronize one local restaurant each week to help them stay afloat.

The ask came to be known as the “Mayor’s Challenge” and each week Coffman would try a new dish or two from one of Aurora’s vast array of eateries.

Over the course of several months, Coffman took his weekly challenge seriously, documenting his tour of local restaurants. One week the pork souvlaki plate with a Greek salad from the Athenian, a longtime Aurora establishment. Another, the baby corn Manchurian and grilled tofu tikka masala at The Madras Cafe, a small vegetarian Indian restaurant.

“The food was amazing and reminded me of when I studied at Vaishnav College in Madras, India (the city has been renamed Chenai) so many years ago under the University of Colorado’s study abroad program in 1976,” Coffman wrote on social media.

Try as he might, some local restaurants weren’t able to weather the storm.

“The sad part of the pandemic was that my two most favorite comfort food places have since permanently closed,” Coffman said.

Neither Sweet Tomatoes nor Mr. Panda Super Buffet is in business any longer. Both fit that comfort food spot for the mayor.

The Mayor’s Challenge led Coffman all over Aurora city limits. He was snapping photos with cafe owners, posting menus and encouraging locals to follow his lead.

No two weeks seemed to be the same, though some meals have stuck with him almost two years later.

The vegetable samosas, garlic naan, tandoori chicken, and chai at Star of India on South Parker Road are now part of Coffman’s regular rotation, he said.

“Right now those heavier dishes are so popular. We are doing way more than we were before. The pattern is definitely there,” said AJ Winn-McClain, the school’s head chef instructor. “We just added a bunch of new classes, and most of them are geared toward those old comforts.

People just love them.”

Oftentimes, people flock to classes at Create, located in Stanley Marketplace, for a little taste of something familiar, even if they’re just learning to make it for the first time.

It may be to make a red sauce that their Italian grandma made when they were growing up, or the smell of street food in Thailand from a previous vacation.

Winn-McClain said he often hears comments from students during those classes that the dish takes them back to an old memory.

“That doesn’t really happen so much with our American food dishes,” he said.

Food memories can be powerful. Psychologists believe it’s because they involve all five senses and that food is good at reinforcing feelings. It isn’t so much about the red sauce itself as it is about remembering your grandmother’s kitchen: the sounds of old dishes clinking, the smell of fresh herbs and how good it felt to be there with somebody you loved so much.

It was this same kind of relationship with food that steered Winn-McClain to a career as a classically-trained chef. As a young boy, he would man the grill during branding parties at his family cattle ranch.

“We’d brand hundreds and hundreds of cattle. We’d be out grilling all day long,” he said. “I was just always kind of drawn to that kitchen side of things.”

A ranch is an easy place to learn to love food.

Winn-McClain’s grandmother was an avid baker and his father loved to make fried chicken and schnitzel. “I definitely grew up around those comfort foods,” he said with a laugh.

Winn-McClain has noticed that more and more students have been commenting that they’ve picked up cooking during the pandemic, and so a class can be a great place to build skills or perfect a dish, even if it’s one they’re trying to recreate from their past.

The key is to not be afraid of failure, he said. That

can be an intimidating part of cooking and revisiting old memories through food, but the first pancake theory — which goes that the first pancake is always a trial and usually a loss because you’re just getting used to the whole process again — applies to most all cooking.

“You are welcome to screw it up,” Winn-McClain said.

“Being comfortable with failure is important. You know our grandmothers failed back in the day… imagine how many setbacks they had before they got that recipe exactly right.”

Jovan Mays | Poet, artist and teacher Comfort can be a complicated concept to manage.

You’d expect that kind of thinking from a poet who pushes around ideas to the edge of overthinking.

Jovan Mays is Aurora’s emeritus poet laureate. For the past few years, he’s been working with Aurora Public Schools students on helping them refine their own stories in a variety of media.

Jovan is a master at reflecting on his own lot.

On the philosophy of soothing some unrequited longing through gustatory indulgence, that didn’t also go well for him as a child.

Jovan moved at an early age from his first home in Denver’s Park Hill to Aurora.

“My dad worked for Rainbow Bread my entire life,” Jovan said. Family frills were few and rarely appeared as typical childhood favorites like soda pop, fabulous cereals, frozen treats and just about everything that takes up air time during Saturday morning cartoon shows.

“My family just didn’t really eat from the middle aisles of the grocery store,” he said.

So when one of his new friends in his Aurora neighborhood introduced him to the concept of “The Second Fridge,” he was intrigued.

These were Aurora families that had customary refrigerators filled with mayonnaise, broccoli, jelly, bacon, milk and lots of leftovers. But the “Second Fridge” in the garage? This was golden childhood bouillon.

His friend’s gold mine in a garage was filled with every kind of soda pop, endless varieties of ice cream treats and frozen concoction that most children are groomed to understand as comfort food.

The welcoming family of his new friend made sure he knew “this is all yours” and to feel free to indulge in whatever he wanted.

He wanted.

And he waited until after midnight. While everyone was asleep, he went back out to the garage and plowed through cream sodas, Otter Pops, Nestle Drumsticks and yogurt amazements.

“I ate myself sick at his house by accident,” Jovan recalled.

Lesson learned.

When it comes to foods promising comfort, be careful what you wish for.

Real comfort came in the kitchen of his own family home, from a cast iron skillet.

On exceptional occasions, his dad would bring home Jovan’s coveted favorite: chicken drumsticks.

The resulting home-fried chicken legs were only half of the treat. The extravaganza seemed to a little boy that it included a long time in the making.

“It was always such a process,” Jovan said. Dishes for the egg wash, the flour dredge and maybe some spiced bread crumbs. There was the heavy, black skillet sharply contrasting with the Harvest Gold kitchen range, a source of modern appliance pride for his mom.

“I could barely reach the counter,” he said. But he was alongside his dad, captured with him in the kitchen, as the legs were bathed then dredged and then laid into a ferocious pool of snapping oil.

The experience was pure synesthesia, he said. A heady swirl of fragrant crust, angry oil and his dad propelling the legs to the finish line on the kitchen table.

Sometimes there was mac and cheese, On even rarer occasions, homemade collard greens.

The drumstick feasts were so rare and coveted that as a boy, he thought the chicken legs must be extravagantly pricey like prime steaks. As it turned out, the cost came as his dad’s time, luxuriating over home-fried chicken.

Similarly, standing Sunday breakfasts were also part of his family’s food for comfort ritual. There were either pancakes or crispy potatoes, made perfect in the bacon grease, fried eggs and buttery toast with his mom. Joe Nguyen | Journalist Food is near and dear to Denver Post journalist and Aurora resident Joe Nguyen’s heart.

He’s competed in some gut-busting competitive eating contests — including one in Downtown Denver in 2011 that included Nathan’s Hot Dog eating champion Joey Chestnut and several that involved eating a gallon of ice cream as fast as possible — and his affinity for Chipotle burritos in his formative years is legendary, but his comfort food is pho.

Nguyen is part of a large Vietnamese family and the country’s traditional soup dish is part of him in many ways.

As a child, the now thirtysomething remembers opening the door to his house after church every Sunday with the “fragrant aromas” of the broth that had simmered on the stove while the family was gone and it still resonates to this day. To find the best pho, Nguyen’s gone on a quest around the metro area and virtually anywhere he visits in search of the best-tasting version of the broth, which has subtle regional differences everywhere in Vietnam and in restaurants as well.

But nothing can match the home recipe handed down from his late mother, which he makes once every two or three months now.

“It’s basically the same recipe my mom used to make,” Nguyen said. “She taught it to me after she got cancer so it definitely holds more meaning for me.”

Nguyen often freezes his homemade batches and can heat them quickly, add meat and rice noodles and have a quick, yet nostalgic meal just about any time.

“It’s like my mama’s food,” she said.

She’s a particular fan of soup, which her mother cooked for her growing up, especially during cold weather.

“On a cold day like today when it’s freezing outside, Korean people, we love to have soup,” she said. “I grew up with tofu soup, that’s one of the foods that I eat a lot.”

Cho’s restaurant will celebrate its five-year anniversary this month. She didn’t start out in the restaurant industry — for 10 years she worked as a banker, and then after deciding she needed a career change became an investor.

Her friend Seong Nam Park — “I call her sister because we became like family in the U.S.” — worked at a Korean restaurant on Havana Street and would cook for Cho often.

Eventually the restaurant went on the market and Park encouraged Cho to invest so they could go into business together. Because it was at a good location next to Aurora’s H Mart and she trusted Park’s culinary skills, Cho took her up on it.

They’ve had ups and downs, especially during the pandemic, but so far have pulled through.

After the pandemic they changed their hours from 4 p.m. until midnight, which Cho said has boosted business by catching a lot of late night customers. (Who wouldn’t say no to short ribs or pancakes after a late night out?)

“We are happy that we made it,” she said.

One of her favorite things they offer is galbi, a dish of marinated short ribs. She likes to pair it with spicy tofu soup.

Rangeview claims 18th straight APS championship title It had been more than a decade since Robin Allen had led the Rangeview girls swim team to the Aurora Public Schools championship, but she knew the drill Jan. 29.

Coaches go into the pool first for the post-meet celebration — sometimes with the unsolicited help of the swimmers — but Allen quickly put down the championship plaque from the Raiders’ 18th consecutive victory in the district meet, got up on the starting blocks and dove into the Aurora Central pool.

She was joined shortly by her coaching staff and her group of Rangeview swimmers and divers that had amassed 475.5 points to continue its dominance of a meet that returned after it was lost last season to the coronavirus pandemic and celebrated its 32nd anniversary.

Junior Savannah Snow won two events (200 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke), while Bella Gonzalez (200 yard individual medley), Lexi Finnimore (500 yard freestyle) and diver Hailey McDonald won individually and the Raiders swept the relay events for Allen, who is back as head coach of the program that she held before Peter Gerard had it for the last decade-plus.

Senior Alyssa Lutz won two championships and nearly stole the meet-ending 400 yard freestyle relay for coach Beth Himes’ Hinkley team, which finished as the runner-up with 237.5 points. Lutz finished her career with five APS championships, adding the 50 and 100 yard freestyles this year, while she just got touched out trying to get the T-Birds to win the 400 relay. Freshman Hermione Aguilar Lemus added the 100 yard butterfly title.

Host Aurora Central picked up 163 points to hold off Gateway (149), which had the other individual champion in senior Jenny Lorie, who took the 100 yard breaststroke.

Prep ice hockey’s two state championship games are slated to go back to the Ball Arena next month, the Colorado High School Activities Association announced Feb. 1.

The semifinals and championship game of last season’s playoffs — which were made up of just four teams due to the coronavirus pandemic — were held at Loveland’s Budweiser Events Center, but will return to the Colorado Avalanche’s home arena.

Ball Arena will be used for the Class 4A and 5A state championship games, which will be played back-toback March 8, with puck drop for the 4A game 5:30 p.m., followed by the 5A contest at 8 p.m.

This season’s playoffs will utilize multiple venues, with the quarterfinals and semifinals scheduled to be played at Magness Arena on the University of Denver campus. Quarterfinals are
