When many people come together to work toward a common purpose, a lot of good can come into the world.
For Sentara RMH Medical Center and its patients, the women of the White Rose Giving Circle bring a shared charitable spirit that is literally music to the ears of the local hospital community.
The initiatives that benefit from the Giving Circle span all facets of hospital operations, including the purchase of vital equipment, support for nursing scholarships and funding for efforts such as a unique music therapy program. Providing such far-reaching assistance has long been the goal behind this collective of more than 80 women, who share common traits of faithfulness and compassion.
Each woman in the Giving Circle gives at least $500 a year to maintain membership, knowing the benefits of a strength-in-numbers approach. In 2022, the White Rose’s cumulative donation total will surpass $500,000 since its start in 2008.
“It is a unique opportunity to provide for the community, as well as build relationships within the community,” says Louise Hostetter, a White Rose member since 2013. “The philanthropic philosophy behind the group is so powerful.”
For Sherrill Glanzer, who oversees the Giving Circle as special gifts director for the RMH Foundation, this is precisely the impact on community care she envisioned when she organized the group nearly 15 years ago. That initial Giving Circle included 11 members; by 2021, membership had grown to 87.
Though a couple of members today are Sentara employees, the Giving Circle is primarily composed of people from the community.
“Five hundred dollars isn’t small—it’s a wonderful gift,” says Glanzer. “But when you combine all those donations for the common good, they add up to make a big difference. It’s just amazing to see a group of women who care about the hospital and want to see that the workers and patients are in position for the best care. These are community women who want to make a difference.”
Hostetter is a prime example of the type of person who fits in with White Rose’s mission. Although she was previously familiar with Sentara RMH when she joined the Giving Circle at Glanzer’s invitation, due to her service on the RMH Foundation Board of Directors, Hostetter is not a medical professional. In fact, she is now retired from teaching English at Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg.
In other words, Hostetter doesn’t need to be in the medical field to help ensure that her local community hospital has the resources it needs to thrive. She just wants to help.
“In the Giving Circle, we come from a variety of professional backgrounds,” Hostetter says. “I was, and continue to be, intrigued with the resourcefulness of the women in the group.”
Crystal Collins, team coordinator for Sentara’s Volunteer Services, has seen—and heard— those resources make a big impact. She leads a music therapy program that received funds from the Giving Circle in 2021. Through the program, harpist Daniel Over provides therapeutic music for patients to help heal their bodies, minds and spirits.
“Music has transformative power as a therapeutic enhancement to the healing process and the life-death transition,” Collins says.
To help sustain the program’s mission, she filled out a funding request for the Giving Circle to review, seeking a stipend to support Over’s services. She says the musician has received nothing but excellent reviews from patients and Sentara RMH staff, having played for acute, nonacute, high-pain, cognitively impaired and actively dying patients. Recently, Over’s schedule has been altered temporarily due to COVID-19 protocols.
“Music is played continuously, anywhere from 15 minutes to two full hours,” Collins says. “The sounds calm the patient’s heart rate and help soothe any present anxieties. Our goal is to provide, at no charge to patients, the ‘breath of peace’ they need to see their visit or transition through.”
As part of her role overseeing the Giving Circle fund, Glanzer seeks funding requests from Sentara department leaders, and a selection committee of Giving Circle members picks the most compelling requests to present to the group at large for a vote. Group members consider factors such as how requests directly benefit patients, make the lives of healthcare workers easier or facilitate more efficient care.
This decision-making process is a perfect opportunity for the women of the Giving Circle to see their charitable dollars have an impact in the real world.
“It’s not just giving money—we’re a big part of deciding where the funds are used,” Hostetter notes.
Glanzer adds, “It’s exciting to have them understand how their charitable investment enhances the margin of excellence when it comes to patient care.”
The time commitment for Giving Circle members is low, as the group only meets four times a year. In addition to overseeing the disbursement of funds, members speak with doctors and other Sentara personnel throughout the year to help better understand the hospital’s critical needs.
In the case of the music therapy program, Hostetter says it was money well given.
“It’s so important to have that option at a community hospital,” she says. “I think it’s great that we can help make such a wonderful program happen at Sentara RMH.”
“I have personally experienced the effects of the music,” Collins adds. “On one occasion I escorted the harpist to a patient’s room. The patient was in bed, knees drawn up, arms crossed. Once the harpist began to play, the patient’s legs straightened, their arms uncrossed and their eyes closed, and they relaxed as the music played. The most rewarding part was observing the effects of the music with my own eyes and ears.”
White Rose handed out $45,000 in 2021 toward 13 different causes, including music therapy. During the pandemic, the group has been meeting via Zoom, but otherwise operates as normal to fulfill its mission and spread its charitable spirit.
“There are so many people in our community who continue to support the hospital and believe in our mission of bringing healing,” Glanzer says. “These are faithful, compassionate women who continue to be a force through the pandemic.”
