Generals

• Contactless activation by permanent magnets or electrical magnets

• Maintenance-free

• High sw itching capacity

• Large temperature range

• Any installation position

Application

The switches are employed as magnet-sensitive contactless bistable limit switches.

Design and mode of operation

The magnetic switch consists of two dry-reed contacts embedded in cast resin and mounted in a corrosionresistant brass casing. By the motion of a magnet, the contact and thus the circuit can be made or broken. When the contact is made, the magnetic field increases by the squared power as the air gap between the contact studs decreases and the contact closes apruptly. The contact switches almost instantaneously owing to the very small distance between the contact studs and to their low mass.

Magnetic switch bistable.

The contact is magnetically locked in its respective position by means of two magnetic clamps. As the switching magnet is more powerful, the switch is set when the magnet moves over and is set back when the magnet returns.

• High responsiveness up to max. 30 m/s

• Long service life - 109 switching cycles

• Almost instantaneous

• With connection cable or connection area

• Cable length 2m, 5m, 10m or 15m Cable: Oelflex (oil resistant), Silicon (temperature resistant) or Purw il (UV resistant)

Magnetic switch monotable.

With this switch design, the switch remains activated for as long as it is influenced by the magnetic field. The switch returns to neutral position when the magnet is removed.

Notice on installation

If the switch is placed on ferromagnetic material, the switching distance is reduced because the lines of force of the magnetic field become distorted or shorted when the switching magnet is brought near. If on the other hand the switching magnet is placed on ferromagnetic material, the switching distance is increased because the action of the switching pole and thus of the entire magnetic field is increased

Electronic magnetic switch monostable

• Operation by proximity of permanent magnets or electrical magnets

• Functions PNP, NPN or NAMUR

• Sensing distance up to 300 mm, depending on the magnet

• Any specific mounting position

Application

The switches are used as magnetically sensitive proximity switches and impulse transmitters. The electronic resin-encapsulated design makes the magnetic switch vibration-proof.

Design and construction:

The magnetic switch consists of a magnet-sensitive electronic module embedded in cast resin. The magnetic switch is operated by a magnet being approached to or passed along the active side of the switch. The switch can be operated through antimagnetic materials, i.g. non-ferrous metals.

Monostable sw itches:

A switch of this design remains operated as a long as it is influenced by the magnetic field. On removal of the magnet, the switch resets to is rest position.

• Operation by proximity of permanent magnets or 30 ms

• Operating voltage 12 to 80 V DC

• Sw itching current 0 to 400 mA

• With connection area or cable

• Continued short-circuit-proof and polarized

Permanent-type actuating magnets

Note relating to installation: If the actuating magnet is mounted on ferromagnetic metal, the sensing distance increases because the effect of the actuating pole and hence the whole magnetic field is increased. Normally, the magnets are supplied with the south pole serving as active side. Magnets with the north pole for use as active side are supplied on request.

Installation

A ,,shielded" or ,,flush' proximity switch will not be affected by surrounding metal. An ,,unshielded' or ,not flush" proximity switch must have an open space around the active face.

Steel shielded shielded

If proximity switches are installed opposing one another, the op posing switches must be installed with a spacing of 3 x the switch diameter between them.

Installation side by side

To avoid interference in side by side installations a minim um clearance distance between the switches must be observed.

For shielded side by side installations the interspace is a > d ( interspace > diameter> )

If unshielded proximity switches are to be installed side by side the following spacing must be observed: a > 2 d (interspace > 2 x diameter)

Cable Installation

To avoid pick up of induced voltage and current peaks, connecting wires for proximity switches should be installed separately from motor-magnet or valve-wires

Cable length

Extremely long cables will add a capacitive bad to the output and increase interference. Cables for AC-and DCswitches should not exceed 100 m (300 ft) substantially. Cables for NAMUR-switches should not exceed 250 m. (750 ft)

Magnetic fields

Strong magnetic fields may increase the sensing range or even trigger off a proximity switch. Radio frequencies may also influence a proximity switch. At installations with strong sources of radio interference the proximity switch and cable should be shielded.

Actuating area

The actuating area is a limited zone in front of the active face of a proximity switch. Within this area a target will be detected and turned into a switching signal'.

Sensing range

a.) Nominal sensing range Sn

The nominal sensing range Is the value obtained when (he ambient temperature is held at 20 ~C and voltage between 12-24 V. Under these conditions the switching point must be within a tolerance of +10 %.

b) Real sensing range Sr

This is the actual switching distance for an individual proximity switch lt is measured at nominal voltage and ambient temperature of + 20 ºC and will be between 90 % and 110% of Sn.

0,9 Sn<Sr< 1,1 Sn

c) Useful sensing range Sa

Useful sensing range is the distance at which the operation of the proximity switch, under stated temperature and voltage conditions is guaranteed This distance is between zero and up to 81% of Sn

0< Sa <0,9x 09 Sn

Changes in switching point also occur if dimensions of target are larger or smaller than measuring plate

Hysteresis

This is the difference between the operating point and the release point of a proximity switch moving direction

release point hysteresis

operate point

sensing range

proximity switch

Measuring plate

Standard target is a square test plate of 1 mm steel St. 37 - Side length normal equals the diameter of the applied proximity switch. Particular dimensions are given in the data sheets.

Sensing range reductions

The sensing range is based upon the standard DIN measuring plate. With different materials. the sensing range decreases

Influence of different materials:

Steel St.37 Sn x 1,0

Brass Sn x 0.5

Aluminium Sn x 0,4

Copper Sn x 046

Chrome Nickel Sn x 0,9

Stainless-Steel Sn x 0,7

These factors are only approximation formula. Deviations are possible if using various alloys.

Sw itching frequency maximum

This frequency indicates the maximum number of pulses per second, this is for an on/of ratio of 2:1 and one half the nominal switching distance Sn (according to the standard EN 50010).

Repeatability

The repeatability of switch points shows the repeated effective switching distance of two consecutive switching processes within 8 hours at an ambient temperature between + 15ºC and + 30ºC and a voltage of + 5% deviation from nominal voltage.

Temperature drift

The temperature drift indicates the change of the switching point caused by ambient temperature variations within the range of 25ºC to + 70ºC. The temperature of the measuring plate does not influence the switching point. The switching point at - 25ºC and + 70ºC may vary up to 15% compared to the point measured at + 20ºC

Primary DC-sources

Please note: If problems with proximity switches occur, a very common ca use is a poor DC-source! (excessive ripple) Simple sources as a transformer and rectifier are not recommended. A smoothing capacitor is required to avoid more than 10 % ripple. Transformers with 24 V output, rectifier and smoothing capacitor amount to a floating voltage of substantially more than 30 V. Proximity switches with 10-30 V rating may be damaged

Reverse polarity protection

All TIEFENBACH proximity switches are protected against reverse polarity. This switch will not be damaged if connections are accidently reversed.

Interference protection

All TIEFENBACH proximity switches feature an interference protection circuitry. This feature assures that voltage peaks or release interference caused by relays does not destroy the proximity switch.

Ready for operation delay

When power is supplied to the proximity switch, it normally triggers off for a very short per/od of time.

TIEFENBACH proximity switches feature a ready for operation delay to suppress the power on Impulse.

No load current

This is the current consumption of a proximity switch when the output transistor is in the off state. It is indicated at the maximum voltage rate.

Max current load

This Is the maximum load at which a proximity switch may be operated continiuously The minimum current is the smallest current which must flow in the closed state to guarantee the operation of the switch.

Short circuit protection

Internal circuitry which protects the switch against accidental overloads. If the bad is shorted, the DC-switch will revert to the open state until short circuit conditions are corrected, AC-proximity switches have no short circuit protection.

Rate of rise and fall of output voltage edge

Time for rise and fall is approximately the same. For proximity switches up to 20 mm sensing range it is > 5 Volt/µs. For proximity switches with more than 20 mm sensing range it is > 1 Volt/µs

Voltage drop

The difference in voltage at minimum load measured with and without the switch in a circuit.

Leakage current

The current which flows through the load when the sensor is non-energized. Also called burden or residual current.

Ripple

This is the alternating voltage super-imposed on the DC-voltage in percent. For the operation of DC-switches a maximum ripple of 10% should not be exceeded

LED

TIEFENBACH proximity switches feature a light emitting diode to indicate the ,on stage' with a red LED.

Oil-resistance

Normal lubrications do not cause problems. If special lubrications are being used which may adversely affect the proximity switch or cable, please contact manufacturer.

Protection class IP 65

Complete protection against contact with live parts. Protection against ingress of dust and hose water

Protection class IP 67

Complete protection against contact with live parts. Protection against ingress of dust and protection against ingress of water when submerged into water for one meter (three feet) for a period of 30 minutes

Rotational speed monitor

Special features

• Monitoring of revolutions, vibrations etc.

• Start-up transition of 0 to 999.9 seconds

• Parameters can be set for monitoring of too high and too low rotational speeds

• Can be connected to any normal transmitter system: PNP, NPN, NAMUR, oscillation or contact makers.

• Outputs: Change-over contact for monitoring of

• rotational speed

• Change-over contact for fault message

• Acknow ledgement possible if desired

• Start contact as make contact or break contact

• Digital display of actual rotational speed in min1

• All inputs and outputs galvanically separated

• Operating voltage: all normal alternating voltages and direct voltages (230VAC, 115VAC, 42 VAC or 24 VDC

Application

The rotational speed monitor is used for the monitoring of revolving or vibrating machine parts and triggers off in the case of too high or too low rotational speeds. By means of logical evaluation, the rotational speed monitor can distinguish between a deliberate disconnection and a fault.

Method of functioning

The complete rotational speed monitoring system consists of the signal transmitter and the rotational speed monitor. As signal transmitter, the following options may be chosen from:

1. Inductive proximity switch in accordance with DIN 19234 (NAMUR)

2. Inductive proximity switch 24V or 60V DC, PNP (open collector)

3. Inductive proximity switch 24V or 60V DC, NPN (open collector)

4. Magnetically activated contact maker

5. Vibration pickup for supervision of vibration frequency

All signal transmitters function without physical pressure, i.e there is no mechanical connection between the rotor, the machine and the signaling device. By moving past a damping material on the active circuit surface of the signal transmitter, the movement of the machine part to be monitored is converted by the signal transmitter into electrical impulses which are led to the rotational speed monitor. The sequence of impulses is calculated into a rotational speed by the monitor and this speed is displayed.

Slip monitor

Special features

• Monitoring of equipment systems w ith variable rotational speed such as proportioning belts, belt conveyors, belt drives etc.

• Constant monitoring by means of comparison of rotational speeds (also in the start-up phase).

• Can be connected to any normal transmitter system: PNP, NPN, NAMUR or contact makers.

• Outlet for connection to further rotational speed monitoring systems.

• Outlets: Change-over contact for synchronization monitoring,

• change-over contact for fault message.

• Parameters can be set for acknow ledgment function.

• Digital display of slippage in %, rotational speed 1, or rotational speed 2 in min-1 .

• The ratio of transmission is automatically calculated. Operating voltage: (220 VAC, 110 VAC, 42 VAC, 24 VDC

Application

The slip monitor is used for the monitoring of equipment systems with variable rotational speed, such as proportioning belts, belt drives etc. Slippage or synchronization are monitored by means of a comparison of rotational frequency by the driving and driven timing disks. If the permitted slippage tolerance is exceeded, non-potential contacts for switching off and for fault messages are made available.

Method of functioning

The complete slip monitoring system consists of two signal transmitters and the slip monitor. As signal transmitter, the following options may be chosen from:

1. Inductive proximity switch in accordance with DIN 19234 (NAMUR)

2. Inductive proximity switch 24V DC, PNP (open collector)

3. Inductive proximity switch 24V DC, NPN (open collector)

4. Magnetically activated contact maker

All signal transmitters function without physical contact, i.e. there is no mechanical connection between the rotor of the machine and the signalling

device. By moving past a damping material on the active circuit surface of the signalling device, the movements are turned into electrical impulses which are led to the slip monitor. The impulses from the two timing disks are converted into two rotational speeds by the slip monitor and compared. The ratio of transmission is calculated by the slip monitor. When the line voltage is switched on, the "synchronization" relay picks up, and the slip monitor is active. If slippage occurs during the start-up phase or during normal machine operation, the synchronization relay is released after the preprogrammed slippage tolerance has been exceeded and the fault message relay switches on. A preprogrammable switching delay time permits the slippage tolerance to be exceeded for the predefined time.

When the acknowledgment function is activated, the fault message can be turned off only by means of the acknowledgment input. The acknowledgment works on flanks, allowing non-potential make contacts or break contacts to be used. If the acknowledgment function is not activated, the fault message is turned off whenever the slippage tolerance is fallen short of.

Cessation controller type D20/10 53.

Special features

• Actuation through inductive transducers or inductive proximity sw itches (24 V three-wire NPN or NAMUR) or contactors

• Fail-safe, cable length up to 1000 m

• Indication of the sw itching state through light emitting diodes

• Adjustable pulse recurrence time from 0,5 to 20 sec.

• lnsulating material housing w ith sprlng-loaded mounting on bearing rail DIN 46277

Application

The cessation controller can be employed for monitoring of turning or vibrating motions of machines.

Construction and principles of operating:

The monitoring unit comprises one transducer and the cessation controller. Transducers employed are:

a) inductive proximity switches , contactlessly operated through protruding metalpieces,

b) inductive transducers or contactors, contactlessly operated through magnets.

The output relay of the cessation controller energizes after switching on the device. If the time between the pulses fedin by the transducer (pulse pause time) is smaller than the pre-set pulse recurrence time, the relay remains energized. In case of the pulse pause time being higher than the pulse recurrence time, the relay de-energizes. By means of a potentiometer, pulse recurrence time can be continou sly adjusted from 0,5 to 20 sec. on the front side of the housing. If the pulse pause time is higher than 20 Sec., several switching segments for the operation of the transducers must be installed. The switching position „ON“ of the output relay is indicated by a red light emitting diode.

Technical Data:

• Sw itching amplifier for 3 proximity switches

NAMUR

• Available w ith or w ithout pulse extension

• All functions visible via LEDs

Application

• Optocoupler output

• Function reversal by jumper

The switching amplifier comprises 3 channels. Up to 3 NAMUR switches can be connected.

Operating principle

The switching amplifier consists of 3 independent NAMUR amplifiers which comprise, depending on the model, a pulse extension to a duration of 1 second per channel. The duration of the pulse extension can be preset internally by the manufacturer. As signal transmitters, the following models can be used:

1. Inductive proximity switches according to DIN 19234 (NAMUR)

Application

• Output either w ith relay contact or semiconductor MOS relay.

The direction detection system analyzes 2 overlapping pulses with a phase shift of 90° and switches the output relay according to the direction of the passing machinery part.

Operating principle

The complete direction detection system consists of 2 signal transmitters and the direction detection unit. As signal transmitters, the following models can be used:

1. Inductive proximity switches according to DIN 19234 (NAMUR)

2. Magnetic switches according to DIN 19234 (NAMUR)

All signal transmitter conductors are monitored for line fault. The transmitters operate contactless, i.e. there is no mechanical link between the trigger element and the signal transmitter. When a ferromagnetic material moves along the active switching surfaces of the signal transmitters, the transmitter generates an electric pulse which is fed to the direction detection unit. The 2 input pulses need to be shifted by 90° one with respect to the other and need to overlap by 90°.

This pulse sequence is analyzed by the direction detection unit and made available at the output in the form of a pulse. These output pulses can be set to a duration of 5 to 250 ms.
