OUR MISSION IS SIMPLE:
To improve the quality of life for people as they age.
Founded in 1973, Senior Services for South Sound has been dedicated to supporting seniors in our community for over 50 years.
Our programs and services include Brighter Days Adult Day Program, Meals on Wheels, Senior Community Dining, Senior Transportation, Care Connection Caregiver Registry, Supportive Services, Health and Wellness Programs, Trips & Tours Program, Adult Learning, and Independent Living Programs.
The largest program we offer is our Senior Nutrition Program, provided in both Mason and Thurston counties. This program alone provides more than 130,000 meals each year to more than 1,500 individual seniors.
We are proud to provide dozens of activities at the Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center and the Olympia Senior Center.
A Letter from Brian Windrope, Executive Director
A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In 1973, a forward-thinking group of citizens did the heavy lifting to create a new nonprofit organization to serve seniors. Half a century later, all of us owe these people — those still with us and those who have passed on — our deepest gratitude. After all, it’s much harder to start something successfully than it is to keep it going. And so, there we were in 2023 celebrating our 50th anniversary, an opportunity to both think back and look forward.
In thinking back, how could we not reflect, especially as a seniorserving organization, on all those who have passed on? A moment of silence for all of them, those whom we helped and those who helped us fulfill our mission. At some point I did the math and realized that we served seniors in 1973 who could easily have been born in 1893 or earlier. That generation served in World War I. The children of that generation served in World War II. And so on. The younger folks in 1973, those who helped found our organization and who are still with us, overlapped with that generation born in the late 1800s. Here they are today, experiencing life in 2024. If you think about it, each of us touches about 300 years of human history, between the oldest we meet as children and the youngest we meet as elders.
Looking forward, how can we not be excited about the future of our organization in this community? The senior population is growing both in number and as a percentage of our local residents. Our ability to serve it is diversifying and strengthening, which we could not do without your support. We are well-positioned in South Sound to face this future capably, with a strong Board, staff and wonderfully engaged group of volunteers.
While the winds of politics and environmental news can be fraught, there is great hope found in the work of nonprofit missions like ours. If you haven’t already, consider joining our efforts as a volunteer or donor; I promise you will feel better about your own life and help others at the same time.
If there is any lesson we can take from our founders in 1973, it is a message of pragmatic optimism. See in this annual report an homage to the vision of 1973, and a fervent wish that we build upon this toward an even better future.

Each day hundreds of seniors in our community enjoy a delicious meal focused on senior nutritional needs through either our Community Dining or Meals on Wheels programs.
Our Senior Nutrition Program continued its outstanding postCOVID-emergency recovery in 2023. Among the year’s highlights were the return of two Community Dining locations, Tenino and Rochester. Seniors aged 60 and above who come to one of our six dining locations receive meals at just the request of a nominal donation — no senior is ever denied a meal due to lack of funds!
Meals on Wheels continues to be a vital service to the seniors we serve in both Thurston and Mason counties. This program, described as a “life saver” by so many, grows in the number of seniors served every single day.
In 2023, we saw a surge of support from our clients and the community at large as they sent in hundreds of paper plates filled with both heart-warming and heart-breaking messages about what the program means to them.
“Meals on Wheels keep me from being hungry all the time,” one person wrote.
Every dollar you donate continues to help seniors live their healthiest lives.

PEOPLE MATCHED WITH HOUSING
One of our fastest-growing programs is also one of our most unique.
Open to anyone 18 and older, Home Share brings people who have space in their homes together with those in need of housing, as long as at least one person in the match is a senior. Home Providers may offer reduced rent to Seekers in exchange for an agreed-upon amount of support, which can be anything from help with household chores, transportation or even just someone to chat over coffee with.
In 2023, Home Share saw exceptional growth, nearly doubling the matches made in 2022. Because of the program, 15 seniors are able to stay comfortably in their homes and 15 individuals (many whom are seniors themselves) found safe and affordable housing.
“The money helps, but that’s not the main thing. It’s my mental health,” says Gary, one of our Home Providers. Gary and his housemate, Hazel (pictured above) have found a lasting friendship and a feeling of security with one another.
We are grateful to the City of Lacey, the City of Olympia, South Thurston County and the Regional Housing Council for their financial support of our Home Share program.

Our volunteer force is mighty in number, impact and, perhaps most importantly, heart.
Every day dozens of dedicated volunteers show up at our centers to support our programs, while dozens more are out in the field delivering meals or providing rides. These are the people who keep us running. Without them, we’d have no way of fulfilling our mission.
Volunteers don’t just help our mission, they are our mission. With seniors comprising more than 90% of our volunteers, these incredible folks find joy and community in the work they do.
“It’s really changed my life,” says Linda, a volunteer at the Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center.
More than a few have told us that volunteering gives them a purpose after big life changes like retirement or the death of a partner. Others say that it provides them with a sense of belonging.
Whatever their reason for volunteering is, we’re so thankful for them.

Activities, the most visible program we offer, continued its postCOVID emergency rebound in 2023.

Activities programs and classes are geared toward all seniors, with something for everyone. From chair yoga to Tai Chi, Zumba® and line dancing, academic classes and a thoughtprovoking Speaker Series, the Activities Program plans everything with one phrase in mind: “compassion, caring and fun.”
One of our most popular programs housed within Activities is Trips & Tours, offering seniors the chance to travel together. From day trips to see a show in Seattle to overseas adventures in Italy and Iceland, hundreds of seniors ventured forth with us in 2023, discovering new places and forming new friendships.
Activities also helps get our organizational message out to the greater community. Activities like our bingo events — which sold out for the first time since the COVID emergency — create a broader understanding of our mission while bringing together not just people who may have never heard of us before, but generations. At one bingo, we had an age range from 21 to 90!

It’s not every day you turn 50 years old! Though we still have a few years to go before we’re considered a senior, we’re very proud of our half-century of service!
In 1973, a group of seniors eager for community came together. They’d meet for lunch and conversation, sharing ideas and dreams. Since that humble beginning, we’ve grown into an organization that impacts thousands of lives every year.
We like to say that we are dedicated to ALL seniors. Those who are struggling depend on us for essential services such as Meals on Wheels, Community Dining and The PALS Fund. Those who are active and thriving enjoy our varied classes and activities, such as our Trips & Tours travel program.
In 2023, we celebrated with free community birthday parties in our Lacey and Olympia centers. Hundreds of people joined us for live music, tasty food and the shared memories of 50 years. It was wonderful to welcome back old friends and meet new ones. We remain so thankful to be part of such a vibrant community.
If you’ve never stepped foot inside our centers, you really should! Whether it’s to come eat a delicious lunch, take a class, or simply find other folks to spend time with, our senior centers are lively places with lots to offer.
As we reflect on our 50th anniversary, we’re looking forward to our next half-century of serving the senior community of the South Sound region!
