southsoundseniors.org • 222 Columbia St NW • Olympia, WA 98501 • 360.586.6181 1 April 2024 Newsletter GLOBAL VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MONTH See page 8 and 9 for a message from our Volunteer Manager and to see the impact our volunteers make every day!
Volunteerism is reportedly on the decline in our nation, dropping during COVID and remaining lower today than historical averages. Some 23% of Americans were volunteering in a recent national survey, down 7%. Well, you wouldn’t know it looking at Senior Services! We field new requests for volunteer opportunities nearly every day, and have almost 400 on our active roster. Virtually every single program at Senior Services relies on volunteers in some capacity or another.
So why do we do it? I mean, really, what motivates us? I’d be curious to hear your answer.
I grew up with volunteerism. My grandmother Irene (who you may be tired of hearing about by now, but hey, she was my grandma!) was volunteering throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s to run her own organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities find friends and avoid isolation. Back then, she called it the “Handicapped Singles Club.” She’d recruit and get massive turnout at her parties, with Bingo, dancing and all sorts of shenanigans. She volunteered every minute of it, and went beyond by spending her own limited money from her hair styling business to pay for things. Why did she do all this? We can armchair-psychology people as much as we like, but I will tell you what I know to be a fact: My grandma Irene was the happiest, most peaceful and socially engaged person I’ve ever known. She is why I am the Executive Director at Senior Services for South Sound. Don’t underestimate the impact you can have on your grandchildren!
So if you are currently volunteering with us, thank you, and what motivates you? If you are not currently volunteering, what is keeping you away? Research makes clear that volunteering for a meaningful cause like our mission is one of the best ways you can avoid loneliness and remain vigorous in your mind and life. Being altruistic, so to speak, makes us feel good about ourselves, not to mention helping our community thrive. Besides, it’s just a barrel of laughs, and our volunteers will tell you they have a heck of a good time doing it!

Volunteer of the Year 2023: Linda Walker
Linda Walker, a dedicated volunteer at the Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center, has been awarded Volunteer of the Year for 2023. Linda’s commitment and selflessness have left an indelible mark on the Senior Services for South Sound community.
Every week, Linda can be found at the reception desk in Lacey, offering warm greetings and assistance to all who enter. However, her contributions extend far beyond the front desk. Linda has played a pivotal role in organizing and staffing numerous special events, including last year’s 50th birthday parties, decades dances and our fall gala.
Jill Rector, the Center’s manager, praised Linda’s versatility and dedication, highlighting her exceptional skills in various areas. “Linda is incredibly good at selling 50/50 raffle tickets at Bingo, quadrupled the number of seniors attending dine-outs, and is an astute appraiser at our annual Rummage Sale,” Rector noted.
Linda’s impact goes beyond her volunteer duties; she embodies the spirit of community and generosity. Her unwavering commitment to serving others has made a profound difference in the lives of many, earning her the admiration and gratitude of all who know her.
As we celebrate Linda’s well-deserved recognition as Volunteer of the Year, we also extend our heartfelt thanks for her tireless efforts and invaluable contributions to our organization. Linda’s dedication serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the power of kindness and compassion in making the world a better place.

Volunteer of the First Quarter 2023: Gloria Jines
As we celebrate our volunteers, we’d be remiss if we didn’t honor our Volunteers of the 2023 Quarters one last time. These were the volunteers their peers and our staff nominated and voted as impactful and dedicated individuals who embodied the spirit of our organization.
“I feel like I’m able to contribute.”
First up is Gloria Jines, who works at the reception desk in Olympia. You might know Gloria as the one who always has a smile on her face, or perhaps you know her by the Green Bay Packers memorabilia she always seems to have on her person! The fact that she’s a shareholder of the team and brings us back — or even have her daughter bring — delicious cheese curds from Wisconsin, we suppose we can forgive her.
- Gloria
Gloria, pictured above at our Old Hollywood Gala photoshoot in 2022, sets a high standard for us all. We are so grateful for her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Gloria, for your outstanding service and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Volunteer of the Second Quarter 2023: Linda Moon
The Volunteer of the Second Quarter should have come as no surprise when Linda Moon’s name was announced. Not only is Linda an amazing volunteer at Budd Bay Bargains, our thrift store in the Olympia Senior Center, she is a tour leader with Trips & Tours as well.
There just seems to be something about Linda’s and our organization!
Linda epitomizes dedication.
As a volunteer, she’s always ready to lend a hand wherever required and has even hosted a T&T party at her own home. Her exceptional organizational skills, punctuality, kindness, and unwavering reliability make her an indispensable asset. For years, she has tirelessly served both SSSS and our clients, embodying our core values all the while.
“It’s providing organizations with the help they need.”
- Linda Moon
Thank you again Linda for all you do for our organization!
Come and say hi to her at Budd Bay and ask when her next trip will be! While you’re here in Olympia, grab a coffee and check out her Old Hollywood glamor photo!

Volunteer of the Third Quarter 2023: Barbara Underhill
Barbara Underhill, a woman who donates more than just her time to the Lacey Senior Center, was awarded Volunteer of the Third Quarter.
We are incredibly fortunate at the Lacey Senior Center to have Barbara as a volunteer. Her unwavering dedication shines through in every task she undertakes, from assisting in the kitchen and dining room to ensuring clients receive their meals with ease, and even managing helping out in the coffee bar. Barbara’s remarkable willingness to step in wherever needed has made her an indispensable asset not only to our kitchen and site managers but to the entire center.
Her collaborative spirit, coupled with her kindness and respect towards fellow volunteers, employees, and clients, enhances our community atmosphere. Furthermore, Barbara’s weekly contributions of homemade treats to the coffee bar bring joy and a sense of home to many.
Barbara’s positive attitude, deep commitment and cheerful readiness to serve others truly deserve recognition. Her presence is a gift to the Lacey Senior Center, and we are profoundly grateful for her generous spirit and the positive impact she makes every day.

Volunteer of the Fourth Quarter 2023: Jenny Watson
Rounding out 2023, Volunteer of the Fourth Quarter, Jenny Watson, is yet another example of our volunteers going above and beyond.
Jenny has become an indispensable pillar of outstanding care and commitment at Brighter Days. She has significantly enhanced our program with her profound experience and innovative approaches gleaned from a professional career in Adult Day Care.
Her transition into the Volunteer Social Worker role has been a pivotal contribution, especially in assisting our client families as they navigate the complexities of life with dementia. Additionally, Jenny’s dedication to fostering community and support is evident in her organization of two monthly support group meetings, offering invaluable resources and solace to individuals on the dementia journey. Her efforts not only enrich our program but also deeply impact the lives of those we serve, making a real difference in the face of challenging circumstances.
Thank you again to all of our volunteers. You make our organization a better place every day. We can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for us!

Celebrating Diversity
Why we celebrate: Diversity, equity, and inclusion are pivotal in fostering a culture of understanding, respect and belonging. Highlighting these values emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures, perspectives and experiences that shape our world. Recognizing these occasions allows us to appreciate the myriad ways people find meaning, express faith and strive for a more inclusive society.
April 2: Autism Awareness/Acceptance Day
Autism Awareness Day (as well as Autism Acceptance Day) is observed annually on April 2nd, with the entire month of April dedicated to Autism Awareness. This global initiative aims to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), promoting understanding, acceptance, and support for the autism community. The day and month also advocate for inclusive practices and policies to support people with autism in leading full and enriched lives. Landmarks around the world light up in blue, symbolizing solidarity and support for the cause.
April 4: Qingming Festival
The Qingming (“ching-ming”) Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is an important traditional Chinese festival observed on the 4th or 5th of April each year. It is a time when people pay respects to their ancestors and the deceased, emphasizing filial piety and family unity. Celebrations include cleaning and decorating ancestors’ graves, offering food, tea, wine, and joss paper, and enjoying outdoor activities like spring outings and flying kites. While it originated in China, the Qingming Festival is also celebrated in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and by Chinese communities worldwide.
April 9: Eid Al Fitr
Eid Al Fitr, known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is a significant Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Celebrated by Muslims around the world, its date varies each year based on the lunar Islamic calendar. Eid Al Fitr begins with the sighting of the new moon, starting with prayers at mosques or open spaces, followed by visits to family and friends, exchange of gifts, and feasting on special meals. Charity, known as Zakat al-Fitr, is also a key component, with Muslims giving to those in need. This joyous occasion is celebrated globally in countries with significant Muslim populations, including but not limited to the Middle East, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, India, and in Muslim communities across Europe, the Americas, and Africa.
April 22: Passover Begins
Passover is a Jewish holiday commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery in Egypt, as described in the Exodus story of the Bible. Celebrated for eight days (seven in Israel), it begins with the Seder meal on the first two nights. During the Seder, families read from the Haggadah, recounting the Exodus story, eat symbolic foods like matzah (unleavened bread) and bitter herbs, and share songs and prayers. The holiday emphasizes themes of freedom, reflection, and community.
