Brian’s View

Meteorology has always fascinated me, and as

a backpacker and sailor, I’ve had plenty of reasons to pay attention to weather systems. You might know that November is our rainiest and windiest month here in the PNW. Energy left over in the system from summer heat enables higher energy events. So enjoy the drama before we settle into the more benign drizzle of January and February! Speaking of changes in weather, I have to reflect that Senior Services for South Sound has our own seasons. Just recently we held our Fall Gala, where we celebrated our 50th anniversary as an organization. It was grand! We raised over $117,000 for our mission and people had a great time. Now that we are debriefing and recovering from that big push, we go into the Fall/Winter with an eye toward the holidays and finishing 2023 strong. Over the past few years, we have grown our organization to better serve the growing and dynamic community of seniors in Thurston and Mason Counties. Our little region contains a full range of community types, from deeply rural to high rise downtowns. Our seniors are even more diverse than our geography. Our programs are booming with participants, and this makes us happy deep in our hearts. And yet we know that only a small fraction of eligible seniors take advantage of our many offerings. We hear constantly about seniors who remain home, alone and lonely. We know the health outcomes for isolated seniors who remain isolated are poor. We open wide our arms to your friends, relatives and neighbors who would benefit from a trip, a class or a nutritious hot meal. We are YOUR community senior-supporting organization, and I assure you we offer more than you think we do. With your generous support of donations and volunteer time, we remain steadfast in our belief that improving the quality of life for seniors is a beautiful pursuit!

Celebrating Seniors

Our 50th Anniversary, held at the Lacey Community Center on October 7, was

a fantastic success! We are so grateful for everyone who helped us raise more than $117,000 to fund our mission. Our volunteers and staff worked hard to make the evening very special, and we were so happy to celebrate our first half century with our community. Among the highlights of the event were a musical performance by Gayla Duerr and Marshall Ellison that brought to life many classic songs of the 1970s, and a keynote speech by former State Senator Karen Fraser. We were very pleased to be able to premiere our latest movie, “As Time Goes By,” which took a whimsical approach to our 50 year history. Starring members of our senior community and a few of our staff, the movie can be viewed at https://50years.cbo.io/. Visitors to our Olympia Senior Center can see the fabulous “50” sculpture made for the event by volunteer Linda Roseberry. Covered with photographs from our half-century history, this eyecatching piece now sits atop the piano in our lobby, where it will remain lobby through the end of the year. If you weren’t able to attend our gala or either of our summer 50th birthday parties, we hope you’ll celebrate with us in spirit as this anniversary year winds down. Remember, donations make up more than 40% of our budget, so we hope you will consider supporting us with a gift so that we can continue our mission to improve the quality of life for people as they age. To make your gift, head to southsoundseniors.org/give.

Volunteer Spotlight: Holly and Rosie

Holly and Rosie are often thought of as sisters. While the

label might be genetically untrue, the pair do consider themselves to be sisters of the heart and have the volunteer shift schedule to prove it! Holly Maxim and Rosie Haque met each other while volunteering at the Senior Center’s Estate Store, but then COVID hit and the store eventually closed for good. When unmasked life finally returned to the Center, they both asked Volunteer Coordinator Theresa Ziniewicz if she would schedule them as a volunteer team at the Budd Bay Bargain store, and they’ve been working together every Wednesday afternoon since. Holly also volunteers at the reception desk where she fields phone calls, explains organization services and points people in the right direction for other community services. Rosie grew up in Chicago, and after retiring decided to move to Olympia to be near her only daughter. Holly, on the other hand, lived in Arizona, California and Oregon until moving to Seattle, and then eventually headed down I-5 to the Olympia area. Rosie was a Mental Health Nurse, but once she retired she decided to move to Thurston County – quite a culture shock compared to the big city of Chicago. The Olympia Senior Center seemed like a great place to meet other people and maybe help out as a volunteer. She loves the area, with things like 15 minute free parking on all parking meters (whoohoo!), free parking after 5 p.m. and free parking all weekend long, things you would NEVER find in a large town like Chicago. In the meantime, Holly was living in Seattle when she earned a scholarship that eventually brought her to the Evergreen State College to take Consciousness Studies and Library Technician classes. With her college degree in hand she then returned to Seattle where she took care of her sick mother for 15 years while working for Meteorcom, a company working for all four national railroads. But the lifestyle in Olympia had gotten to her, so when her mother died in 2018 she decided to retire and move back to the State Capital. These two ladies are perfect examples of retired seniors volunteering at least a half a day a week to help keep the Senior Center up and running. You could do the same. It’s really simple! As we say each month, just contact Theresa at 360.586.6181 ext. 120, or visit our website at southsoundseniors.org/volunteer, and soon you could become a member of the volunteer staff. But the first step is up to you, so please give Theresa a call. Who knows, maybe one month YOU will be interviewed in this newsletter column! -Scott Schoengarth

Scott is the coordinator for the Bus Buddy Program of Thurston County, a partnership between Intercity Transit, Catholic Community Services of Wester Washington, Volunteer Services and Washington State Department of Transportation. He can be reached at 360.688.8832.

Senior Nutrition Program

Crystal Rodriguez and Brandon Bolender are our newest Senior Nutrition Program team members.

Crystal, who has a background in service and nutrition work in the adult family home community, will be heading up our new Shelton Community Dining site. Brandon is a dishwasher and kitchen assistant at the Olympia Senior Center. “I really wanted to help the community, to broaden what I did before,” Crystal says. “I was only taking care of three clients in my previous job, so this way is like I’m taking care of hundreds of clients at once.” While she knows she was important in the lives of those three clients, Crystal says that by working with the hundreds of seniors who participate in our community dining programs every day she feels that she’s having a bigger impact on the community as a whole. Brandon, on the other hand, says that he applied for his job because he likes being around and learning from seniors. He also says that he just really loves washing dishes. Another thing about Brandon is that he loves Star Wars. If you think you know all there is to know about the Star Wars universe, talk to Brandon. You will quickly realize that all your knowledge can’t hold a candle to what Brandon knows. He also loves comic book universes like Marvel and D.C. Crystal may not be able to out-geek Brandon, but she is our resident craft guru. “If anyone needs ideas or help with any crafty projects I’m the person to come to,” she laughs. Stop by the Olympia Senior Center and help us welcome our two new awesome team members to our family! Join us for November celebratory meals! Olympia Senior Center: Monday through Friday from 11:45 am to 12:30 pm Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center: Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm November 2 - Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead): Pozole Rojo with Cotija Cheese and Tortilla Chips. Pet Assistance for Low-Income Seniors

Kristy Wilkins our new Pet Assistance for Low-

Income Seniors coordinator, says that this is the job she’s always wanted but never knew existed. “I wanted to help pets and help seniors, I just never knew they could be the same thing,” she says. A Lewis County native, Kristy comes to us after over a decade of working in hospitals and various director positions for nutrition and senior living. Over her career, Kristy has been crisscrossing the country, living in Tennessee, Hawaii and Montana… and San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Texas and Indianapolis. After a whirlwind career that seemed nonstop (five years of which she spent living out of a suitcase), Kristy decided to move back to the area to take care of her aging parents. The self-described mother of three cats, Kristy is the perfect fit for the PALS Program which helps low-income seniors pay for veterinary bills. “All three are either strays or hand-me-downs,” she says of her cats which all have health concerns and are seniors themselves. “I’ll do anything for them.” With her own love of animals and personal experience with the sometimes overwhelming expense of vet bills, Kristy is able to approach each call with compassion and empathy. “My favorite part of my job is getting our funds into the hands that need it,” she says. Three weeks in, Kristy already has success stories. Welcome to the team, Kristy! Want to help low-income seniors and their pets? Visit our website at southsoundseniors.org/pals and donate today!

Trips & Tours

This month we will be saying bon voyage to our dear friend and Trips & Tours Manager Sky Myers.

Sky started work for our organization ten years ago, working for the first three years as the Director of Travel and Retail which included the oversight of our former Estate Store (now Budd Bay Bargains). After the pandemic, she turned to Trips & Tours as her sole focus. “After the pandemic, when we all came back I just started really focusing on T&T as a program and not just a revenue stream,” she says. Once she took to heart the idea that travel truly does fall under our mission of improving the quality of life for people as they age, the program took off. “We designed the program to be mission-driven,” Sky says. “It promotes diversity, it builds community and friendships. This is bettering people’s lives and is impactful.” Sky says that the part she will most miss about working in the Trips & Tours office is her clients, many of whom have been traveling with her since the beginning. While she’s not sure what the future will hold, Sky says that she intends to stay in the travel industry. She also hopes to stay in mission-driven work. When asked if there was anything else she wanted to talk about at the end of our interview, Sky shared some words I think we can all benefit from: don’t let fear hold you back. “Take a risk,” Sky urges. “Don’t be afraid to make new friendships. Go explore new things.” Sky’s last day will be November 13. Unfortunately there will be no Travelers Tea or Trips & Tours catalog for November. Keep your eye out for trip announcements on Facebook, by subscribing to our Trips & Tours newsletter and signage at our centers.
