senior housing

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 3 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by city or county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

DEAR READERS OF ALABAMA We will begin our 12th year of the Seniors Blue Book of Baldwin, Mobile, and Escambia Counties, AL, by thanking you for the support and accolades you have given us. The Blue Book will continue its valuable service to the senior citizens of the area. As always, our goal remains to improve dignity in aging by providing needed information for independence and improved quality of life. With information you have power, and with power you have self-reliance. Furthermore, senior service professionals tasked with providing recommendations for housing and healthcare use the Seniors Blue Book as a primary reference. We try to make their jobs easier and more effective by providing this information. I am very excited to announce that with this edition I will be passing the “publishing torch” to Jennifer Stephenson of Gulf Shores. Jennifer is well-experienced in business and will be improving many aspects of both the Seniors Blue Book and

SeniorsBlueBook.com. Expanded grid amenity questions, even more resources and community event and networking calendars are just a few changes. She will have the support of her husband, Jason, and her two children (albeit very young) Luke and Davis Ann. If I had one request of you, the reader, it would be to welcome Jennifer as fully as you welcomed me 15 years ago. She is worthy of this, I promise. Jennifer’s introduction is on page 8; please read it! I know you’re wondering “why is Thad leaving?” Well, the answer is that I’m getting older, and I never thought I would. All of you in the Mobile/ Baldwin/Escambia kept me “thinking young” and encouraged me to keep-up the good work, so I did. However, time took its toll; I do not have the energy to match my spirit, and you deserve more than I can give. So, now you have more with Jennifer. Please do not hesitate to call us for more Books, corrections, additions, and if we can help you with additional information. Again, the reason we have this business is to fulfill a need for information for seniors. Best regards, Thad and Carolan Anderson Publishers

DEAR READERS OF ALABAMA My name is Jennifer Anne Stephenson but most people call me Jen. I am excited to be the new publisher of the Seniors Blue Book for the Alabama Gulf Coast. I feel very blessed that Thad and Carolan have chosen me and my family to carry on publishing the SBB. This guide is such a valuable resource for aging well in our community. I am a native of Southern California and attended San Diego State University, graduating with a BS in Business Management. I, as well as my parents, moved to Gulf Shores over 13 years ago. Many people ask why? I moved to the area to wed my husband, Jason Stephenson, an Alabama native, who was born in Troy, grew up in Florence, and attended Troy (State) University. Since then, we have grown our family, first with four legged children– we have 4 dogs and 6 cats. We welcomed our daughter, Davis Anne, to our family in 2008 and our son, Luke Hanlon, in 2011. I have enjoyed immersing myself and my children in the numerous Southern traditions and culture. My dad was born in the South so I grew up with my grandmothers making fried chicken and beignets. While this may not seem like a big deal when you grow-up in the South but for a kid from California, this was unique. We had football season tickets at my alma mater and I rarely missed a game. However, I quickly learned that there is nothing like the spirit of football in the South. I rapidly came to enjoy SEC football and know that I cannot plan events unless I check the football ALABAMA – SUMMER-WINTER 2015

schedule first! My mom, Fran, also known as “MeMa” lives with us in our home in Gulf Shores. She is a RN who continues to work in the senior care services arena on a part-time basis and lives a very active senior life. My husband’s business is in the financial and insurance services dedicated to the senior market. One of the main reasons that we decided to buy the Seniors Blue Book for this area was the success that he experienced by advertising in SBB. My goal is to continue to share the informational foundation of senior services that Thad as created. The Seniors Blue Book was founded on a core principle of integrity. This principle has served as its foundation and the SSB has never strayed from this practice. My plan is to continue these same high standards and values on which the Seniors Blue Book was founded. These ideals are the reason that Seniors Blue Book is the trusted name in Senior Resources across the country today. My hope is to provide relevant and interesting information for our clients and readers. We have passion for what we do at SBB. This is an amazing company and I feel so fortunate to be part of this passionate group of people that bring valuable information to families, individuals and professionals who are trying to provide for those in need. If you have suggestions of relevant content, articles that are of interest to you or other ways in which I may be of service, please reach out to me at jen@seniorsbluebook.com. Best regards, Jennifer Anne Stephenson

still is a source of national pride.

The commitment we made and the cost we paid to defeat a world menace on two fronts simultaneously will forever remind us of the cost of freedom in the USA. If there ever was a monument to freedom, strength of national commitment, and pride of citizenship, the National World War II Museum is that tribute. In spite of all French Quarter attractions in New Orleans, the National World War II Museum is the #1 Attraction reported by TripAdvisor, and the #1 Best Place to Learn U.S. Military History by USA Today. The Museum displays actual aircraft and vehicles of the era, and hundreds of exhibits of WW II events. But that’s not all; remember the entertainment? The Andrew Sisters, Bob Hope, big band music, patriotic songs are part of the Museum’s offering. There’s a little café with malts and burgers, and a terrific restaurant with a nationally-known chef in charge. The gift store is packed WW II memorabilia, and there’s hands-on activities for the grandchildren (and us), and the introductory 4-D film, Beyond all

Boundaries, is a terrific experience, not to be missed. Here’s a bonus particularly for men: As a boy born in August 1941, the soldiers, sailors and airmen of this war were my heroes. I loved the airplanes of WW II, and yearned to fly someday. Now, at age 74, with those dreams fulfilled, I can walk up to a Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powered the Mustang and Spitfire, and a Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp that powered the mighty C-47. I can almost hear the roar, feel the power, smell the exhaust, and be in awe as I was years ago. Where else can anyone get such a sense of pride and respect for our Nation? I encourage you, the reader of this article, not to wait any longer to visit the Museum. I guarantee you will be glad you did. Bring the family, or better yet, insist that the family take you. The Museum earned the title “National” by being such a national treasure, discoverable by all.

I Wish I Had Known This is the most often comment About Hospice heard by hospice providers. Sooner It is common for people to not discuss end of life issues, so hospice can be a difficult, uncomfortable subject. Awareness of chronic incurable illness can be overwhelming, leaving little room for planning care. Hospice exists to give you the exact support you need, mentally, spiritually, and physically. Hospice can lessen your fears, increase your comfort, and broaden your understanding of this difficult period in your life. As for families of hospice patients, through counselling it can help you cope with the situation.

Hospice is not just for cancer patients; it serves other life-limiting illnesses such as emphysema, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease. Hospice comes to you wherever you are, will frequently visit, and is available with a phone call 24-hours a day, every day. You deserve the peace of mind and gentle, needed care Hospice provides. HOSPICE Hospice involves an interdisciplinary approach to provide medical care, pain management, and emotional

and spiritual support. Care and consideration is given to the patient’s family as well during this difficult period. The emphasis is on comfort, not curing. It can be provided in the patient’s home as well as freestanding hospice facilities, hospitals, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Hospice care is also referred to as palliative care or end of life care.

Having Difficult Conversations We often hear the term “Care for With Your Parents the Caregiver” but most people do not understand the profound depth of what that means.

Nothing makes adult children more nervous than finding the right words to use when bringing up concerns about their loved one. Maybe you are worried because your dad is living alone and think he would be better off in an assisted living apartment, or you think that your mom should not be driving anymore. You might be struggling with how to bring up the conversation about end of life wishes. These conversations can be very challenging and frustrating. So how do you start to talk to your parents about the future? For most of us it would seem natural to start by making a “plan” or a list

of topics to check off. While a plan is important, it is equally important to realize that often we may be so focused on what we want to say that the conversation becomes one-sided, and we may not take time to consider our parents’ feelings. Resistance breeds resistance; if you approach a difficult of challenge. However; if you approach it as Steven Covey would advise “seeking first to understand,” you may be surprised and pleased at the result. The most effective approach to difficult conversations is to begin by asking your parent about his or her feelings. Some examples are “How does it make you feel when I talk to Continued on page 30 Indicates website link on seniorsbluebook.com

you about moving?” You may even try a validation statement like, “You hate the idea of depending on others to drive you around. I would be upset too.” The more honest conversations you have, the more positive results you get when it is decision time. Remember we do not grow old in a day and likewise, the process of preparing for the future is not something that can be accomplished in one afternoon. So be prepared to start small. If you have a conversation on a sensitive subject, be ready for a “no.” This happens a lot. Do not become discouraged; give them time to think about it. Respect the fact that, “change” to many people, is a kin to “loss”. Letting go may take some time. There are times when you will not have the luxury of taking your time. if your parent is in physical danger and cannot be independent at home. At times like these it would be wise to seek out a professional to guide you. Social workers and case managers are readily available in most health care settings. Using the skills of a professional to act as a mediator, facilitator or advocate is wise and can help preserve precious family relationships. The need to face some difficult conversations may never go away, however; these ideas may help bring you closer to your loved one and make the process more gratifying. Finding the Right Care for You When it’s time for you to get the special attention and care you need as you age, the Seniors Blue Book is the natural starting place. It lists all assisted living facilities and many medical and non-medical senior healthcare options, but how will you go about getting the details? You can call each one and plan a visit only to learn, perhaps, it isn’t the right place or service. Maybe a better option is to have someone else do this for you, at no cost to you. In the Baldwin/Mobile area, a local company gathers detailed information about senior living and healthcare options and invites you, the senior, to let them guide you to a selection that fits your budget and care requirements – again, at no cost to you.

A Senior Care Finder service will discuss your needs and, based on these needs, provide several options. They will actually take you to the facility or service for a visit so you can talk directly to the management. There’s no pressure on you to make a decision about one place over another. You won’t be shown a facility or service that’s beyond your budget, above or below your need of care, or located where you don’t want to be. That’s the simple solution many of us are looking for; contact a service in Senior Care Finders listings of this Seniors Blue Book, see above. HEALTH AT HOME - DEFINITIONS

Osteoarthritis and Osteoarthritis is the leading Knee Braces condition driving the increase in knee and joint replacement.

It’s a wear and tear condition that occurs when the cartilage in your knee deteriorates with use and age, causing pain when standing and walking.

A functional knee brace is a device worn around your knee to help you stay on your feet in spite of knee osteoarthritis. Knee braces used in osteoarthritis are “unloading” braces and are worn to counter the faulty knee mechanics that lead to joint damage. Ideally your knee should be aligned so the force of your weight 52 ALABAMA – SUMMER-WINTER 2015

falls evenly on the inner and outer joint compartments. In reality, though, most people’s knees are not ideal. Instead, one or both knees rotate slightly inward placing additional stress on the joint – usually the inner knee. Osteoporosis makes this worse, causing misalignment and greater pain. The knee brace pushes the joint in the opposite direction, taking pressure off the affected area and relieving pain. If your knee feels like it might buckle when you put weight on it, a knee brace can help you stand and move with more confidence. A knee brace can delay more invasive osteoarthritis solutions like surgery, especially if used in the early stages. ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES

Care for the Caregiver We often hear the term “Care for the Caregiver” but most people do not understand the profound depth of what that means.

12 Ways for a Caregiver to stay Healthy and Happy ■

It is documented that the caregiver for someone with a disability or illness often has more urgent medical concerns than the patient themselves. While that may seem odd to some people, just ask a caregiver when the last time they had a vacation, a night to themselves, a day to do nothing or have been to a doctor or dentist appointment. The fact is, that as caregivers, we often give all our energy and resources to the one we care for and at the end of the day, there is very little to give ourselves. Support groups, counseling and educational seminars are wonderful resources but it has been my experience that some caregivers find the idea of an outing overwhelming. But, there is hope. Just like trying to change your exercise habits or lose weight, you have to take small consistent steps and not try to run a marathon on the first day.

68 ALABAMA – SUMMER-WINTER 2015

Know what resources are available to you Become an educated caregiver by taking classes and reading articles Know when to ask for help and do not be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help Take care of yourself by going to the doctor and dentist for regular checkups

The first step is to respect and know yourself. When you think about tools and tips that are available, use what works for you but do not be afraid to try something new. If it works, continue to do it, but if doesn’t work for you, then be confident enough to move to another technique. Remember that you are

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

Be realistic with what you are able to do both physically and emotionally Give yourself credit and remind yourself what an amazing job you do for someone in need Eat nutritious meals by snacking on fruits and vegetables instead of foods loaded with carbs and sugars Get regular exercise and fresh air by taking a walk or even just sitting

more than just a caregiver. You are a valued member of the community, a mother or father, a son or daughter, a sister or brother and a friend. You are important and significant and you deserve to take care of yourself and be happy. Your job is physically demanding, emotionally draining, time consuming, frustrating and the most wonderful, fulfilling and rewarding job you could ever have.
