Blanche, 80, on road again in search for volunteer teachers By JIM BOWDEN
BLANCHE O’Connor and her band of helpers are coming to a school near you. The 80-year-old former interior designer and founding president of Granfriends has been traversing the state since the program started in 2008, recruiting volunteers to “help bridge the generation gap by teaching children new skills”. “And now it’s Toowoomba’s turn,” said Blanche who is happy driving herself to cities and bush towns across Queensland to find supporters for Granfriends. “Come out and meet my two great grandchildren; we’ll tell you what we’re up to,” said the quick, soft voice like that of a much younger woman. The Granfriends program, an initiative of Older People Speak Out, helps teach children skills such as knitting, sewing, reading, spelling, creative writing, crochet, embroidery, chess, craft work, storytelling, dancing, debating and drama. “The children love it,” Blanche said. “We need you!” Blanche O’Connor and two of her great grandchildren Ebony, 9, and Indiana, 8, make the call for volunteers to help the Granfriends program in Toowoomba and surrounding districts
