Celebrate Dads’ Day with a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon concert!

Pacific Isla nd H or a Barrie opper r Discovery Reef Cruise?

President Julie Marks with Maria and Amanda in the song ‘Be Prepared’

SUNDAY September 7th is Fathers’ Day, so why not get the family together and join the happy throng at a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon Concert? This special day is when we show our appreciation for the fathers, grandfathers and father figures in tour lives. So this Fathers’ Day say thank you and let them know how much you appreciate them. Starting at 2.00pm, the concert will showcase top local talent (around 180 people are entertained by a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon concert in the CCSA Hall, Nutley St., Caloundra on the 1st Sunday of each month from May to October.)

By special request, the hilarious item titled “Be Prepared” will be reprised from the recent Music Hall performances. A couple of young dancers from En Pointe Dance school will fascinate the audience with their agility and talent, and Jan Meade will recite a couple of storytelling poems. Of special interest will be the performances of Ally Hickey, who won the Musical Theatre prize at August’s Junior Eisteddfod, (and many other prizes in the speech and drama sections). All in all, as usual, there will be an excellent group of local artists sharing their talents and personalities with their community. The cost for the afternoon’s entertainment (which

community news Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers ON October 21, 1950 the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers commenced with a street procession that stretched three miles in length. Led by a bullock team and watched by a crowd estimated to be 50,000 strong, the Parade was a resounding success. The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers subsequently became firmly cemented as an annual event in the region’s community calendar. As the years passed, Carnival’s appeal widened, attracting tourists from across Queensland, interstate and internationally. The theme for the 2014 Grand Central Floral Parade is “A Storybook of Colour”. A firm family favourite, The Floral Parade promises to deliver a spectacular line up of fresh floral floats, street performers, carnival characters, stilt walkers, walking groups and live bands all led by the Grand Central float carrying this year’s Celebrity Grand Marshall! Financial Care for Retirees

Shaping the future of retirement village living

A review of Queensland’s retirement village laws is currently underway to improve protection for residents and enhance the long term viability of the industry. Retirement villages are a popular accommodation choice for retirees and seniors, with around 28,000 residents currently living in 317 retirement villages throughout Queensland. Minister for Housing and Public Works, Tim Mander, said as part of the review retirement village residents and operators are being invited to have their say via an online feedback form on

the Government’s ‘Get Involved’ website. A consultative Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) has been released to allow all interested parties to provide feedback on the proposals. Feedback is being sought on a range of topics including village closure, best practice standards, alternative financial models and early payout of a resident’s exit entitlement after they leave the retirement village. Mr Mander said comments on the proposed changes will help ensure a balance of power between residents and operators and will help the industry con-

tinue to meet the needs of the growing seniors population. The consultation is open for six weeks and all submissions must be received by 5pm Wednesday 24 September 2014. For more information, visit www.getinvolve d.qld.gov.au. Written submissions can be submitted by email or post on this Review of the Retirement Villages Act 1999. You will find a copy of the Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement on the website, and if you don’t have a computer, please ask your local Queensland Minister for a printed copy. Email:

Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 20 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Go on line and visit www.superfreshbags.com.au for more information or to make a purchase or if you don’t have access to a computer call

community news Nambour Probus Club

At the Clubs August meeting President Colin Sims inducted new member Roger Roberts and also made presentations to Eric and Val Stoddart on the occasion of their sixtieth wedding anniversary

THE Nambour Probus Club has had two interesting Guest Speakers at its recent meetings. Mrs Christine Jones OAM spoke about her community work, in particular her involvement with students from the Nambour High School. After the disastrous floods in the Gatton Helidon area in 2010-11 she felt that something needed to be done for the people who lost loved ones as well as all their material possessions. As a result packages aptly named “gifts of

love” were prepared containing everyday items we take for granted and these were distributed to this devastated community. This project had a profound effect on the students and other who were involved. This small act of comfort was quite overwhelming to the people who received them and to realise they had not been forgotten. More recently Kerry Evans from Scripture Union spoke of the work Chaplains do in our schools. There seems to

be a degree of misunderstanding in the general community regarding the role Chaplains play in our education system. At present there are some 600 chaplains servicing 850 Queensland schools. Kerry presented a number of short video clips explaining the valuable work Chaplains do such as someone for a young person to talk to other than teachers or relatives. Many young people have been helped through difficult situations with “Chappies” help.

Energy Deregulation Bills leave Queensland seniors cold PROPOSED changes to Queensland energy regulations would leave older people out in the cold without adequate consumer safeguards, National Seniors Australia has said. As they now stand, the Bills would remove the safety of government price setting and allow the market to set prices without providing sufficient protections for consumers, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill told the State Development, Infrastructure and Industry Committee at state parliament this week.

In contrast to other commercial contracts, the changes would allow energy retailers to increase the price of energy contracts at any time, with no minimum notification period. O’Neill called on the government to include measures such as a minimum notification period of price changes - including increases to fees, charges and the lowering of any discounts. “This would ensure that they can change providers if they are unhappy with proposed price in-

creases,” he said. A cap on termination fees would also help consumers avoid becoming unfairly locked into electricity contracts and ensure those experiencing hardship were not punished for late payment of accounts. “An effective public awareness campaign is needed to promote greater public understanding of the proposed changes,” O’Neill said. He also called for a ministerial consumer advisory committee to be set up to ensure consumers’ concerns and interests were represented, a less confusing billing system and fortnightly or at least monthly billing to help older people budget more easily. O’Neill said people living in retirement villages and manufactured homes would also face higher electricity costs while receiving limited access to concessions and a lower standard of consumer protection than customers connected directly to the grid. “This anomaly exists as many residents of retirement villages and manufactured homes have no direct connection to the electricity grid and buy their electricity from the park owner through an onselling agreement.” Courtesy: ‘Connect’, National Seniors

community news 100th Anniversary of Australia entering World War I on Anzac Day 2015

THIS will be a very special day for all Australians but with only 120,000 veterans (for the whole of Australia?) we will be pretty thin on the ground on Anzac Day 2015. So we want everyone to look in their old tobacco tins, shoe boxes and cupboards to find the medals of their passed WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam family members plus also past Australian Defence Medal, (ADM) recipients wearing both groups medals (on the right breast) in their honour and pride at your town’s dawn service and Anzac Day Parade! We also invite all serving and ex- service ADM re-

towns you could use your local newspaper and notices on shop windows, advertise and invite them to march, and maybe put on a BBQ for all the proud family members wearing the medals in their home town. For you see Anzac Day is a celebration of being an Australian, and as these proud medal wear-

cipients, - that’s army, navy, air force, men and women, national servicemen, CMF/ Ares etc (most of whom would be family members – known to you - in your town) to also join the dawn service and

Anzac Day parade at your local Cenotaphs, Memorials and Flags. They will be asked to wear their ADM (on their left breast) with pride in their service in the Defence of Australia. Veterans always have

ers march on, they will be honoured by the massive public respect and support with onlookers proudly cheering, clapping and waving Australian flags. So you ESO’s if you think it’s worthwhile for family members and ADM recipients to march together with us veterans, come out

DrSiavashEs’haghi from Sunshine Coast Radiology said that patients at the new hospital will greatly benefit from this approval. “Sunshine Coast Radiology can now offer the first and only private 3T MRI machine on the Sunshine Coast that has the ability to provide bulk billing MRI examinations for GP, and selective specialist referred patients,” DrEs’haghi said. Minister for Health Peter Dutton said the allocation

of Medicare-eligibility to MRI providers reflected the Coalition’s commitment to health services in the area. “We are determined to boost frontline services and strengthen Medicare and this announcement fits hand-in-glove with those commitments,” Mr Dutton said. Applications under the expansion closed on 31 December 2013 and will increase the overall number of Medicare-eligible MRI services operating nationally from 339 to 349. This will enable the projected demand for these services to be met into the future.

SINCE the introduction of Windows 8 many people have been asking me how to back up their computers. It’s very important to have a back up of your material so that in the event that you have a computer failure, then you haven’t lost everything! Many times I have had to advise a client of the sad news that all their data including precious photos from years past, have been lost due to a hard drive failure. This can be easily prevented by doing a weekly or monthly back up of your material. My philosophy is ‘it’s better to have three copies of one photo, than none at all’. Prior to Windows 8, you could back up documents and files using the Backup and Restore feature available in the Control Panel - Back up and Restore in Windows 7. Windows 8 has enhanced the back up feature and renamed it File History,a s shown in the screenshot below.

Before you set up your back up, I would suggest you buy an external hard drive to use only for backing up your compupter. A Terabyte hard drive may set you back between $100 and $140. Once you plug it in, await for a notification asking if you want to ‘Config-

ure this drive’. It will then use the drive for ‘File History’, tap or click it, and then turn on ‘File History’ on the screen that appears after this:

Otherwise, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, to open the ‘Charm Bar’, and click on the ‘Settings’ icon then tap or click on the ‘Search Bar’. Then type in ‘File History’ in the search box, and then tap or click ‘File History’ settings that pops up on the left hand results section of the screen. Tap or click ‘Select a drive’, and choose the external drive you want to use, then click to Turn on the ‘File History’. Once the ‘File History’ is set up properly, the backup task should work behind the scenes. And you can find and locate the files from the backup folder on the drive ‘File History’ by default. If you disconnect the external drive, the backup task is automatically stopped. Once you reconnect the back up drive ‘File History’ will continue backing up from where it left off. It’s as easy as that, and it will save you so much anguish if something goes wrong with your compupter. Take advantage of seniors’ discounts OLDER people and carers are reminded of the vital information service offered by UnitingCare Community’s Seniors Enquiry Line. The Queensland Governmentfunded Seniors Enquiry Line still has available a limited number of printed copies of the 2013-2014 Seniors Business Discount Directory for holders of a Queensland Seniors Card, Seniors Card +go, or Seniors Business Discount Card. Seniors Enquiry Line Coordinator Julie Argeros said the directory is a great resource for seniors and their carers wanting to maximise the discounts and specials on offer from participating businesses and government services. “It is difficult to know all of the discounts that are available to card holders and it is not always easy to remember to ask if a discount applies at the point of sale,” Ms Argeros said. “For those who don’t already have a directory, 2013-2014 versions are still available for regions from Brisbane to Far North Queensland. “The Seniors Enquiry Line staff can post these out to you or provide information about business discounts over the phone. “We can also assist with

information about who is eligible for a Seniors Card and how to go about applying for one.” For a copy of the 201314 Seniors Business Discount Directory or to access a range of information and services avail-

able to Queensland seniors, phone the Seniors Enquiry Line for the cost of a local call. This UnitingCare Community service can be contacted on 1300 135 500 from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

community news An Enduring Legacy

KAREN-ANNClarke will be buying a Legacy Badge this badge week and hopes many thousands more will also. “Legacy has been there for me and my daughter and this is one small way of giving back”, KarenAnn said. Karen -Ann and her daughter Hannah came under the wing of Legacy in 2009 when her husband Warren died from illness related to his Army service in South Vietnam. “When Warren was alive, I always remember him asking me to do two things when he died. First was to contact the Department of Veterans Affairs and the other was to contact Legacy. Two weeks after Warren passed I was at the Eumundi Markets and passed a Legacy badge seller (it was badge week) and picked up a contact

1800 children and dependants. Historically, Legatees were returned servicemen; today, Legacy welcomes membership enquiries from people from all walks of life. As Frank recalls “I very soon realised that KarenAnn had already addressed the majority of immediate issues and the support that Legacy could provide would be

more focused toward Hannah.” Karen-Annadds “I think of Legacy as that distant relative who is in the background day to day but steps forward when you need support and someone to lean on. Legacy has brought great change to our lives from assisting with Hannah’s scholastic development to providing a safe social environment for us to

move forward.” The support that Legacy provides to widows and families of veterans who have died or become incapacitated is ongoing. This has become more prevalent since recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. With little Government funding Legacy relies on public donations such as raised during the annual Badge Week Appeal.

Karen-Ann reflects “For me the greatest gift that Legacy has given us is the opportunity to catch our breath and reorient ourselves to a future full of opportunity and promise. I also know that Legacy will always be there for us, they are our family now.” So when you see a badge seller this year stop and help out.

EDITORIAL DEADLINE: Editorial submissions are always welcome. Deadline for the October editition of Sunshine Coast Seniors Newspaper is September 17, 2014

MEMBERS of the Buderim East Probus Club recently spent an enjoyable day at Yandina where they had coffee at the Pioneer Coffee Roastery, lunch at the District Historical Society and a very interesting tour of the Mattress Company. Who would think a visit to a mattress factory would be interesting? Well, Social Director Joan Ward did, and by the time the tour conducted by owner/ manager Rob Boesten finished, so did the members. Who would think so much goes into producing a quality mattress! Some members tried the mattresses out and indeed, one member had to be woken up in time for the delicious quiche lunch provided by the voluntary members at the Historical Society. All in all a wonderful day, and thoroughly recommended to other clubs which may be looking for a good day out.

On Saturday the 9th of August over 60 family and friends gathered at daughter Kay’s Nambour home to celebrate the 90th birthday of George Bampton. The centrepiece of the day was the crossword cake complete with grid and clues. Solving the daily crossword is a must for George. Born in Nambour, George has lived on the Sunshine Coast all his life. In 1946, he and wife Betty bought a pineapple farm at Palmwoods; later buying the dairy next door where they also grew

small crops. He then started a contracting business, preparing the ground on farms for planting. After selling the business, George commenced work at The Big Pineapple where he became farm manager. On retiring, he and Betty enjoyed going on bus tours and playing bingo. Now living in Woombye, George and Betty love to spend time with their 5 children, 13 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Yandina SS celebrates 125th anniversary WITH the 125th anniversary of the Yandina State School on the 5 and 6 September, past pupils, Lorna Akers (nee Ivins) of Bray Park and Maureen Doneman (nee Low) of Nambour have been recalling their Yandina school days during World War Two. Maureen recalled that she still had her camouflage hat specially made to wear in the airraid trenches at the school. And Lorna said she could top that with her original identity disc on the original tape to wear around her neck and what is more it still had the original peg to bite on, to stop her teeth from shattering when bombs exploded. During World War Two, schools, public buildings and most households in Yandina had an air-raid trench. People feared there would be a Japanese invasion and there was a need for preparation. Fortunately there was never an air-raid warning in Yandina. The history of the hat is this: it is one of two hats made by Mrs Alma Low for her daughters, Valerie and Maureen Low, to wear whenever an air-raid warning was given during World War Two, 1939 1945. The Department of Education, then Public Instruction, provided the pattern for the hat. The plain khaki side was to be worn on the outside while inside was lined with a different fabric. School children were drilled in what to do if there was an air-raid warning. They had to keep their hats under their desks and at a given signal, put them on and run and crouch down in the trenches. The trenches were dug in a zig-zag pattern close to the front fence near School Road. Although the war ended in 1945 the trenches were not filled in till about 1947 and in that time were placed out of bounds for children as they were thought dangerous. IN 1887William Godfrey selected 117 acres on the northern shore of the Maroochy River opposite and downstream from the confluence of Maroochy River and Eudlo Creek. In 1898William married Ellen Coe, a widow with nine children. Her late husband was Robert Coe of Coe’s Creek, Nambour. William and Ellen had three more children, Mary Ann born 1899, George born 1900 and Louisa born 1901 By 1908 William had built a home on his farm. George Godfrey married Elizabeth Johnson in 1925 and they had three children, George Junior, Betty and Noel (also known as Tommy). Noel, his wife Sandra and their sons still live on the original farm 127 years after William’s selection. This must be a BliBli record of the longest continuous occupation of a farm by the same family, five generation in all. William had built a second house around 1923 and lived in it until he died in May 1941, four months after Ellen. That house on the north bank of the Maroochy River, was between where the two

Spring Fun day to celebrate Disability Action Week QUALITY Lifestyle Alliance (QLA) will celebrate Disability Action Week with Super Spring Saturday on Saturday 20th September. Super Spring Saturday is set to be a carnival style event that will deliver an action packed day full of fun and activities for the whole family. QLA Manager, Kym Chomley said the organisation is excited to celebrate Disability Action Week with a day of family fun for the community. “There will be market and food stalls, crazy hair for kids, emergency services demonstrations, wheelchair races and a cricket challenge. “We are hosting a 5.00pm happy hour and are delighted to announce that blues musician Barry Charles will be performing from 6pm,” Kym said. in need. The event will be held on Saturday 20th of September from 11.00am till 9.00pm at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. SECURITY measures in Brisbane will be visibly increased during November for the G20 Summit including numerous canine units doing detection duties in public areas and protecting visiting world leaders. A behind the scenes look at training and demonstrations of law enforcement dogs exists just a few hours outside of Brisbane in the Southern Downs region, in the nation’s first ever permanently open to the public working dog kennel, Lawdogs Australia. Set in the idyllic landscape of Stanthorpe amongst renowned wineries and paddock to plate

experiences, resides a privately owned and operated ‘Dog Show With Bite’. Guests can share in the journey of pocket size protection puppies starting out their training for future security roles around Australia and Papua New Guinea, as well as view adult dogs doing demonstrations of protection, detection, agility and obedience. The hour long commentated show also allows visitors to participate and pat young puppies as part of their socialisation process, is safety fenced and suitable for all ages. Dog trainer and Lawdogs Australia owner Matt

Hibberd said ‘We have a number of puppy recruits starting training over Winter and Spring so visitors now see everything from puppies learning the basics through to adult protection dogs showcasing all that the dog industry does out in society’. Lawdogs Australia is open every Wednesday and Saturday for scheduled show times at 11am and 2pm, and welcomes tour and bus groups on other days by prior appointment. We also offer discounts to groups and bus tours and is very suitable for all ages. Lawdogs Australia, 335 Church Rd

community news Final Release at Australia’s best over 50’s community

Artist’s impression of the Special design home

NOT long after taking out the 2014 UDIA (Urban Development Institute of Australia) award for Australia’s best over 50’s living, Halcyon Landing is set to launch its final release of homes. ‘The Grand Finale Release’ represents the last 18 homes ever to be built at the multiple-award winning community at Bli Bli. Project Director Chris Carley said that he was delighted to announce the launch of the Release. “As a tribute to the success of Halcyon Landing we have put together a collection of new and some of our favourite home designs which have made this project so special,” said Chris. “Each home has also received the designer ’s special touch with upgraded stone columns enhancing the contemporary facades and street appeal,” he said. Nestled in the south-east corner of the gated community, The Grand Finale

Release makes the most of the surrounding views with a pocket park to the west and a leafy forest outlook to the east. Future home owners will also benefit from close proximity to the upgraded River Markets Shopping Centre, so popping out to the shops is just a short, convenient walk from the front door. All homes in the Release come with an 8Star energy rating, keeping it warmer in winter and cooler in summer whilst using less energy. Unique to The Grand Finale Release, each home also has upgraded solar panels, up from 1.5kw to 2.5kw, an increase of 50% for each home. “It really is a fitting grand finale for this award winning community. Halcyon Landing has evolved to become a wonderful blend of planning, architecture and design innovation,” said Chris “These key elements along with a combination

of space, facilities and happy people has transformed this land into a vibrant and active over 50’s community.” Also awarded for environmentally sustainable initiatives, all Halcyon homes are constructed using quality materials such as steel framing and thermal Hebel panelling. The gated community is bordered by a signature walking trail and extensive parklands and features a fully completed Recreational Precinct. Resort style facilities include an exclusive Recreation Club, championship size bowling green, flood lit tennis court, swimming pool, spa, putting green, work shed and more. Halcyon’s financial model has made it a revolutionary concept for the retirement sector, with the company’s no-exit fee model providing transparency and security for baby-boomers. Halcyon does not charge exit or deferred management fees and buyers do not pay stamp duty on their purchase. Home owners pay a fixed weekly fee indexed to the Consumer Price Index which covers all running and management costs, as well as water and rates charges. Homes in the final release are priced from $489,000 to $709,000, for more information phone 1800 050 050 or simply Google ‘Life begins at Halcyon’.

Members with computer knowledge would be welcomed as volunteers to give help to other members. Giving help to another member will be satisfying to both of you. 2 Lowe Street Doug Carloss & his fellow Edgewater Village residents are presented with their cheque by Judy Blackall, Rob Chittick & Leanne Foale from Bendigo Bank

AS every green thumb knows, a flourishing garden takes time, energy and a lot of love. At Edgewater Village, Bli Bli a beautiful herb and vegetable garden is taking shape. The idea to create this garden at the over 50’s lifestyle community began after their October 2013 Spring Fair, when some of the proceeds raised were allocated to get the project underway. Now, the results are on show for all to see, but the best part is that many parts of our community are behind its success. When in full operation, the garden’s produce will be sold to the residents at minimal cost. It was built by the Edgewater Village Men’s Shed and the raised garden beds were constructed on an existing concrete base, allowing members to tend the garden without excessive bending. Project co-ordinator, Edgewater Village resident, Doug Carloss said there is even provision for the run-off from watering to be recycled, thereby retaining much of the nutrients that exist in the soil mix. “The seedlings have been planted in a total of 31 polystyrene boxes which were positioned to allow the run off to be collected. Traditional cultivating methods are used for 24 boxes, while the remaining seven boxes contain seedlings grown hydroponically,” he said. “Roy Kassulke is a fellow resident and has extensive knowledge with hydroponics. He offered to share his knowledge with the garden group and also supervise the regular propagating of future plants from seed. This will ensure that the garden will have continuous crops,” Doug added. Judy Blackall from the Marcoola Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank visited Doug and other residents this week. After an approach to assist with the funding the project, Judy, Bendigo Bank regional manager, Rob Chittick and Woombye Community Bank branch’s, Leanne Foale were on hand to present a cheque for $1,000 and see the garden first hand. “The garden is simply fabulous!” she said. “It was terrific being around so many residents who are obviously loving being around the garden. We’re delighted to support a living project such as this one and hope the garden will bring more joy in the years to come. It’s obviously in great hands and you just feel better being around it, and the teamwork that has already gone into creating this space is terrific,” Judy said. Doug added that Edgewater Management had been very supportive of this concept and the grant from Bendigo Bank had enabled the project to be completely financed. “The garden has given many residents the opportunity to become involved in a community project. It’s encouraging to see the positive interest in such a healthy outdoor activity and we thank Judy and Bendigo Bank very much for the help they have given us to ensure the success of this venture,” he said. Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice IS ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which

to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. So what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resort-style feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. You could soon be making the best choice of your life!

ON Wednesday 6th August, 2014 about 19 of our ladies visited the “Twinnies Seabird Rescue Complex” in Landsborough. They were greeted with a lovely hot cuppa for morning tea before getting a tour of the premises. The tour included a visit to the hospital where injured birds are treated and then another area for recuperation and a third area for birds ready for release back to the wild. From all

accounts the ladies were very impressed with how clean and well kept the areas were and how organised and dedicated the Twinnies and their volunteers are in offering this service in the treatment of injured birds. Volunteers are always needed to keep this complex open so if you wish to donate your time I am sure it would be much appreciated. Towels and rags are always needed in caring for the birds. Don’t

Amazing Clean also Specialises in:

Haemochromatosis Australia - Are you pumping too much iron? HAEMOCHROMATOSIS, or inherited iron overload disorder, is the most common genetic disorder in Australia. It causes the body to absorb excess iron which builds up in the organs and joints over many years and eventually becomes toxic. Early symptoms include joint pains, fatigue, weakness and sexual dysfunction. If untreated it can lead to more serious and potentially fatal symptoms including diabetes, liver cancer and cirrhosis, heart failure and osteoarthritis. Despite being so common (one in 200 have the genetic pre-disposition) it is not well known and is under-diagnosed. Often only the individual symptoms are treated and the underlying cause is not recognised. Tests for the condition are simple and cheap. If people are diagnosed early and treated then haemochromatosis is no barrier to a normal healthy life. Treat-

ment is simple, drug free and uncontroversial. Regular venesection, like giving blood at a blood bank, unloads iron. Often this can be done at the Red Cross Blood Service and the blood is useful. If you know someone in your family has haemochromatosis, or you have been feeling tired and aching for an extended period, talk to your GP about haemochromatosis. Haemochromatosis Australia is the support, health promotion and advocacy group for people with haemochromatosis and their families. The group has operated continuously for 22 years. We are a not for profit group run entirely by volunteers. We have been endorsed as a deductible gift recipient by the ATO and are registered as a charity. We have approximately 1500 members across Australia. We operate an Info Line 1300 019 028 and informative website www.ha.org.au .

community news Caloundra Family History Research

IN early August, members from Caloundra Family History Research Inc were at Kawana Shoppingworld taking the opportunity to promote the group and show shoppers the range of facilities it has available for family history research. A good response was received from the public and some became new members. Our thanks to centre management for allowing the group to assemble a display in the centre. Part of the presence at the shopping centre was to promote the successful Open Day the group held during August, designated National Family History Month. Sunshine Coast Seniors Week and the group’s 2013/2014 Volunteers were also recognised at the group’s library and research facility. A beautiful morning tea with sandwiches, scones as well as a celebratory cake was supplied, thanks to sponsorship from C.O.T.A. (Council of the Ageing). Many seniors from both the Coastal area and the Hinterland received free advice and help in commencing their family history research.

LAW, FINANCE and YOU Centerlink Change in Assessment PEOPLE who receive the Age Pension from Social Security need to be aware of an important change occurring form 1st January 2015. This is to do with the way income streams from Allocated Pensions or Account Based Pensions are assessed under

the income test when started after this date. Currently the income you receive from your Account Based Pension is assessed differently than income from your other financial assets. Under current rules the account based pension is as-

sessed more favourably, and it is considered that part of the income stream being received is a return of some of the capital that had been saved over time, and therefore not all of it is considered as “income”. On the other hand financial assets of all other types (oustide Account Based Pensions) are deemed, for a pensioner couple, at an annual income rate of 2% for the first $79,600 and 3.5% for the remainder. By way of example, a couple with half a million dollars of financial assets outside of an allocated pension, would be deemed to be receiving an income of $16,306. So in this example if the half a million dollars is owned not as a financial asset, but as an account based pension the assessment would be different. Say the male member of the couple is aged 65, and they are receiving the minimum compulsory pension payment of 5% per annum. The income that will be received is $25,000 however there is write down of this because of the perceived return of capital. In this case the “deductible amount” is $26,968 and there will be no income assessed from this investment for Centrelink purposes. (note: perceived return of capital is a calculation based on the re-

cipients life expectancy factor.) Although this looks like a significant difference, it will not make a lot of change at the moment as this scenario will more than likely be caught under the assets rather than the income test because of our low interest rate environment. If interest rates were to increase by 2% over the ensuing years look at the difference it makes to the way half a million dollars is assessed under deeming. $79,600 @ 4% and the remainder @ 5.5% takes the income to $26,306. What this demonstrates is a pension fund now which is assessed as having a zero income could be effected to the extent of an income in excess of $26,000 per annum and would have a dramatic effect on the amount of age pension received. Who will be effected? Any person who commences an account based pension after 1st January 2015 and receives an age pension benefit. What this means is that if you CHANGE your account based pension arrangements after this date by changing provider you will lose this current valuable assessment. If you are currently not happy with your pension provider and thinking about making changes you would be well ad-

Sunshine Coast residents warned of telephone scams FEDERAL Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP is advising Sunshine Coast residents to be on the lookout for malicious scammers that are trying to obtain personal information. “My office has been contacted by people who have taken a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Federal Government asking for personal details including bank account information. “Some scammers are asking residents for an upfront payment of a few hundred dollars and some are providing a reference number or return phone number. “I have been in contact with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and they have advised that if you receive a call out of the blue saying you are entitled to a refund or asking you to deposit funds, hang up immediately,” Mr Brough said. If you suspect that you have received a scam call you can report it by visiting www.scamwatch.gov.au or contacting the ACCC on 1300 795 995.

the Resort residents (packet mixes are strictly forbidden!), a large assortment of plants propagated by members of the Garden Group, a very interesting range of craft items that the Resort’s craft ladies have been working on for months, as well as a white elephant stall, where visitors will be pleasantly surprised at what’s on offer, as well as the prices being asked. New stalls this year include a bottle stall, with all sorts of bottled goodies, and a pre-loved clothing stall. Morning tea, consisting of tea or coffee with scones, jam and cream, together with a sausage sizzle, will cater for those needing sustenance while hunting for bargains. Mrs Hodson said that the Fair was a great opportunity for people to pick up some very reasonably priced and unique items that could make ideal Christmas gifts.

MORE and more research is showing that incontinence and osteoporosis are closely linked, which has significant lifestyle implications for women approaching middle age and older. While there are some

conditions where the link to incontinence seems logical - such as being overweight, heavy lifting orweak pelvic floor muscles -there are some where the connection is quite unexpected. One of these is the link between osteoporosis

and urinary incontinence. A 2009 Canadian study (Sran MM, 2009) found that middle-aged and older with osteoporosis had a much higher incidence of incontinence than women without osteoporosis.

The Canadian findings are supported by the work University of Newcastle researcher Associate Professor Pauline Chiarelli. Her research, which is part of a 15-year longitudinal study of more than 30,000 Australian women, provided further evidence of the link between incontinence and osteoporosis. Dr Chiarellisaid her researchwas now focussing onthe relationship between height lossassociated with curvature of the spineand incontinence. “It is well understood that women with osteoporosis lose height because of the spinal deformity associated with vertebral fractures the most common osteopathic female fracture. “There is also research suggesting that curvature of the spine increases the risk of pelvic organ prolapse because of the subsequent altered positioning of the organs,

muscles and bones within the abdominal cavity(Mattox TF et al, 2000),” she said. This, Dr Chiarelli said, lends support to the theory that the altered forces pushing down from the abdomen onto the bladder as a result of the spinal deformity were implicated in incontinence. In Dr Chiarelli’s view, women who are diagnosed with osteoporosis need to be screened for and informed about their increased risk of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

“Currently an average of one osteopathic fracture takes place in Australia every eight minutes, and this is expected to more than double in seven years’ time if the trend continues,” she said. The disease occurs when bones lose minerals such as calcium quicker than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone density or mass, and a higher risk of fractures. There are 1.2 million Australians, predominantly women over 55 years of age, with the condition.

Osteoporosis Australia advocates three main measures for the promotion of healthy bones and the prevention of osteoporosis: adequate calcium intake, normal vitamin D levels (to help absorb calcium) and specific weightbearing exercises. For help with continence problems go to continence.org.au or phone the free National Continence Helpline (1800 33 00 66), which is staffed by continence nurse advisors who provide advice, referrals and resources.

Wake up to the dangers sitting killed 5.3 million last year! “DON’T be surprised (or insulted) if the next prescription from your doctor is for nothing but an exercise regimen”, says one writer from America. “Globally, 20% of early deaths are preventable with moderate exercise. And for the first time last year, sitting killed 5.3 million people worldwide – more than smoking. Inactivity is now considered a full-on pandemic by health officials. Many U.S. doctors are pushing to make “lack of exercise” a mainstream medical diagnosis”. “U.S. adults sit on average 8-10 hours every day.” Australians average 9 hours daily in front of a screen. We sit at computers, in the car, in cafes and we do love our TV! We all know that inactivity contributes to lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease but now Australian researchers tell us that Inactivity affects our mood too. Prolonged sitting may contribute to the risk of

depression. Getting enough exercise is a lot easier than most of us think. Our government recommends 30 minutes on most days and walking is an easy way to do this. The good news is, whether we are required to sit or just love to sit, we can learn to move while we sit. Seated exercise classes are available in many communities and can be most beneficial in keeping blood circulating and joints and muscles moving. And you can move while you sit in front of TV. A variety of equipment is available to help, one of which is the affordable Aircycle circulation booster - a self management tool for arthritis and diabetes, providing gentle exercise to relieve pain and swollen ankles and strengthen leg muscles. It is now available here by calling 0412 329 450, online: www.aircycle.co.nz or by mail order See advert on page 28

Volunteers Required for the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice THE Sunshine Coast Community Hospice (also known as Katie Rose Hospice) is located at Doonan and provides professional nursing care for the terminally ill in a warm, friendly and peaceful setting – it is truly a beautiful place. Our Charity has always enjoyed strong community support . Without this support your community Hospice could not continue to provide services to the residents of the Sunshine Coast. We currently seek more Personal Care Volunteers and General Care Volunteers to help out on our

team. A brief description of both roles is provided and there is a more detailed description in the Volunteer Information Packs. Personal Care Volunteers This role is very ‘handson’ in respect to patient care. As a consequence a Certificate 3 in Aged Care, or similar, is required. We ask that team members are available weekly for 4 hour shifts or alternatively, ‘as required’ (on call). This role also may be called upon to fulfil the General Care roles as well. General Care Volunteers This role works to keep

the Hospice going and does a bit of everything in relation to housekeeping. There are no personal care requirements in this role. Volunteers in this area may cook, clean, do laundry, make tea or coffee of simply sit with our guests and their families, if need be. As with Personal Care roles, we ask team members are available weekly for 4 hour shifts or alternatively, ‘as required’ (on call), during times of need. Volunteering at the Hospice can be a very fulfilling and rewarding experience. If you would like to know more, please visit

Over 120,000 men in Australia are living with prostate cancer and 20,000 more are diagnosed annually. Every year, 3,300 of those men don’t survive. BUS in Finland- strangely enough it was empt y-

Denise Doyle

OUR retirement dream had arrived! Travelling Britian by car south to north staying at booked B & B’s. We drove through picture book villages with thatched-roof cottages and the typical English pub round every corner. We received a warm welcome everywhere with the exception of one unusual experience. Travelling north we arrived early in the beautiful Lakes District, and decided to spend the morning boating on Lake Windermere before enjoying a lazy lunch. Time flew and we drove through green valleys with blue lakes enjoying the countryside. In a fading light we found ourselves on a minor road unsure of our B & B location. Eventually finding our way, we knocked on the door of a very old stone farmhouse. “So sorry, we lost our way...” we started to say as a very angry faced woman confronted us with “you’re late!” in no uncertain tone. She stood aside to let us in and any further apologies were ignored. The meal was served in silence, and we retired early feeling like two naughty children! During the night we were awake listening to some strange dragging sounds past our door with low whispering. We decided not to mention this at breakfast in view of our previous day’s unacceptable tourist behaviour. Thanking our host for the comfortable accommodation, we piled into the car and set off. Looking back at the farmhouse windows I saw an unusual sight. With the curtain drawn back, a very elderly lady in a wheelchair raised a frail hand to wave ‘Goodbye’. I waved back wishing she had been part of our farm experience, but felt happy that the bond of friendship was being shared. A memorable trip to the UK ended far too soon.

There was much at steak

READER Margie Lloyd tells of her lucky escape at airport security:A few weeks ago, I went to New Zealand to a family wedding. The day before I left I had lunch in a pub with some friends. One of them found the steak rather tough and only felt like eating about half of it. Being from the generation which does not waste anything, I wrapped her left over steak in a paper serviette and popped it in my handbag to take home to my puppy. Two days after my return, from New Zealand, I was rummaging around in my handbag and found this little parcel, wrapped up in a paper serviette. As my memory is not as good as it used to be, I was very surprised to discover the piece of steak. By then it was exactly two weeks old but surprisingly did not smell too bad at all. It ended up in the bin. The funniest part of the story was that my handbag had passed through security X-ray machines twice and had even been opened by the security officer who had singled me out for a random drug inspection. If she had discovered the little parcel, or if I had been encountered by a sniffer dog, I would have been in big trouble for importing undeclared animal products into New Zealand, or back into Australia. I’ll never know how much was at steak.

Fingers Crossed Across Australia

Early retirement, as a result of breast cancer and an uncertain future, saw Lorraine Wise and her husband Mike hit the road to explore this wonderful country. Eight years later, she has recorded their grey nomad adventures in Fingers Crossed Across Australia and is raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation through sales of the book. Here Lorraine shares an extract from the book of their time at Kakadu National Park: Each time I visited the loo on four of the five days we spent at the northern campground, a tiny, tawny tree frog was sitting in the same spot behind the door and, of course, I always said “hi”.Those who know me well, take no notice when I talk to my veggies, the plants in the garden, or anything really. On day four the little frog was gone – oh, no! Day five, there were two backpackers chatting away in stilted English, doing stuff to their faces and hair as I went in and closed the toilet door. I don’t know, but perhaps you can imagine their reaction when they heard the mad woman who had just said good morning, also say to the toilet bowl, “Ooh, you’re back!Where have you been?”They stopped talking and there was dead silence. They were also conspicuously absent when I reappeared a tiny bit later.Me?I was very happy to see the little frog back in its special place. Read more about the book and see some of Lorraine and Mike’s great photos and camp recipes at http://milowise.com. The book is available from Amazon, Outback Adventures Supa Centre, 313 Morayfield Road, Morayfield, or by emailing Lorraine at milowise@hotmail. Proceeds from the sale of the book go to National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Perils of Bourke

992 km

BY COLLEEN POVALL LIKE all Grey Nomads we received countless warnings – Don’t Go to Bourke. And if you’re silly enough to go, don’t take your handbag with you or it will be snatched, etc, etc. Our tour guide book said Bourke was a charming outback town which didn’t deserve its bad reputation, so we decided to place our trust in it and not only went there, but I carried my handbag, albeit a little nervously. As the book said, we found Bourke to be a charming spot with fascinating hints of when it was a major port on the Darling River. One of the ‘must-visit’ spots is the cemetery with its pioneer graves. Early settlers share the dusty soil with Afghan camel drivers and reading the headstones, noting how young many of them were, you gain a little insight into the hardships they bore. On our way out a work ute pulled up beside us and the Aboriginal driver said, ‘G’day! How’s our liddle black brudders been treatin’ you?’ We didn’t like to mention he was the first liddle black brudder we’d seen so just smiled and said, ‘Fine’. ‘Yeah, dem buggers! Dey get in your eyes

from Bourke to Ballarat

and your mout’ and your nose, hey!’ ‘Oh, yes!’ we chimed, light dawning. ‘The flies are bad, aren’t they.’ He then went on to tell us about a cream

Designed to keep them out of horses’ eyes, it worked just as well on humans. We hastened off to buy it and it’s accompanied us on every outback trip since.

Poet Henry Lawson said that to know Bourke is to know Australia. The outback town remains a barometer of Aussie life

we could get from the stock agent in town that would repel the pesky insects.

So much for the perils of Bourke. If you’ve ever wondered, it’s well worth a visit.

Bewildering variety of experiences

IF there is a more diverse nation than South Africa on earth I would be extremely surprised. Culturally, ethnically, scenically and ecologically South Africa holds a bewildering variety of experiences in store for the lucky visitor. The adventurous/crazy can cage dive with great white sharks near Cape Town. History lovers can take an enthralling tour of the Zulu War battle sites of KwaZulu Natal. Foodies and wine lovers can have their needs met pretty much anywhere, but particularly amid the stunning scenery of the area around Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek where the visitor will find some of the oldest vineyards outside of Europe. Everywhere you look there is scenic beauty. From the arid Kalahari of the Northern Cape to the lush temperate forests of the famous “Garden Route” west of Port Elizabeth, and from the bird rich wetlands of St Lucia to the towering Drakensberg

Mountains rising to over 11,000 feet. But what the Rainbow Nation is really all about is wildlife. It would be criminal to go to South Africa without visiting one of the national parks or a private game reserve. Kruger National Park is probably the most well known, and all the “BIG FIVE” can be found there – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino, plus all the general game such as giraffe, a variety of antelope, hippos, African wild dogs, cheetahs and some of the biggest crocodiles you are likely to find anywhere. Visit South Africa once and it will draw you back again and again. For More information please contact Peter Emery on 0449 689 447. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Port Douglas: strictly for the birds BY PHIL HAWKES Sure, most of us have been to Port Douglas. For many, it’s the best winter destination in Australia. And with good reason. There’s a huge range of accommodation from 5 star luxury hotels to apartments and backpacker lodges. Moreover, the food scene is probably the best in Tropical North Queensland although with Sydney prices, it has to be said. Nothing like a little indulgence once in a while. Reef trips, the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Cooktown all beckon for day trips or longer; but at the end, there’s always the more sophisticated embrace of “PD” awaiting with its boutiques, craft shops and spas. Plus a couple of lively pubs. Wait, there’s more. It’s to be found just outside Port Douglas, remote from the town’s activity but only a 15 minute drive away, just off the Cook Highway towards Cairns. This is the Thala Beach Lodge, a private nature reserve with just 83 rooms which are so secluded that you can hardly believe anyone else is there. The “rooms” are in fact

luxurious bungalows dotted randomly around a headland, with dense vegetation and magnificent trees creating that feeling of isolation. Depending on your choice of room [and price], the views of the Coral Sea or the jungley surroundings from your balcony are the stuff of picture postcards. Owners the Prettejohn family are justifiably proud of what they’ve created from an old cane and coconut plantation. If you feel like re-engaging with the human race, there’s a bar/lounge and Ospreys, a casual restaurant with extensive breakfast offerings plus a ”modern Australian” dinner menu created by Chef Catherine Pacey…and a fine wine list to match. No doubt one of the finest tables in North Queensland. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the “Bird Tour” with guide David. Armed with binoculars provided by the Lodge, we’re privileged to spot a multitude of feathered varieties including two Ospreys and their chick, nesting at the top of a power pole on the property…we watched in awe as the male returned from the sea with a large fish to feed the family. Kind of inspiring! There’s

Page 40 - Sunshine Coast Seniors - September 2014

also a nature walk and for us, a long beach walk was perfect to help digest an indulgent breakfast. Monday nights are notable for the Indigenous culture program with Harold Talley, an elder of the Kuku Yalanji people, helping our understanding of the history of the Mossman region. Port Douglas has certainly come of age. If you thought it was a top place

years ago, it will delight you now. Even better, there are now much cheaper flights from Brisbane since Tigerair started flights to Cairns…there’s a daily service at a convenient time around noon, so you don’t have to arise with the birds. Wait until you arrive at Thala Beach Lodge for that. www.visitportdouglasdaintree.com.au www.thalabeach.com.au

CALOUNDRA TRAVEL CO. Caloundra Travel Company – We’re here to get you there

Artists impression of Caloundra Travel Company

AFTER many years of running the highly successful business South East Tours, Peter and Ruth Verbrugge are expanding their operations and bringing their extensive experience and knowledge to a new venture – the Caloundra Travel Company. The Verbrugges are breathing a breath of fresh air into the old Caloundra Transit Centre, taking over its management and rebranding the business to create a company which will provide unparalleled travel experiences that customers can rely on. “It is our vision that Caloundra Travel Company will become the leading travel agency and the preferred community hub in the Caloundra Region” Ruth said. “We will provide the best possible products and the highest quality service to enhance the travel experience, from the initial booking to the return journey, for all our customers.” The Verbrugges will be overseeing the operations of both South East Tours and the Caloundra Travel Company, with Peter conducting the day-to-day management of South East Tours and Ruth overseeing the day-to-day operations of the new company. Caloundra Travel Company is located in the former Caloundra Transit Centre, within the Caloundra Bus Interchange, which is owned by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, and is a licensed travel agency specialising in rail and coach travel and tours, as well as general domestic travel. The licensed travel agencycurrently holds agencies for a broad range of travel and tour options – it is the only Queensland Rail agent on the Sunshine Coast, and is a platinum partner to Great Southern Rail (giving access to bookings for The Ghan and Indian Pacific), as well as being an agent for NSW Countrylink. The business is also a Greyhound freight agent/depot for the Sunshine Coast and services more than 900 public buses weekly by Translink/ www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Sunbus. Currently the primary market includes daily commuters on Translink/Sunbus services, train travellers on Queensland Rail, Great Southern Rail and NSW trains. Ruth said they were already expanding the market to include a swathe of domestic travel options. “New markets being opened include cruise ship travel (including a current application pending for shore excursions for P&O into Mooloolaba), Seniors Day trips and extended tours in conjunction with South East Tours,” she said. “We are also working with those holding current agency agreements with Caloundra Transit Centre including Jetstar, Great Southern Rail, AAPT, Kings, Sunlover Holidays, Territory Discoveries, Great Value Holidays and, Con-x-tions Airport Shuttle, as well as Caloundra Cruises.” The new look centre includes a visitor information desk to assist customers not requiring the travel agency, such asthose with Translink enquiries and others seeking general tourist information. Part of the space will be sublet to Volunteers Sunshine Coast, and a café will be incorporated into the centre. Currently there is a coffee cart for snacks and drinks. Combining their many years of experience and their passion for the travel industry will give Peter and Ruth Verbrugge a great advantage as they expand their business. Both have extensive experience in domestic and international travel, having operated and managed tours throughout Australia, Europe and many other parts of the world. It is part of their long-term plan to eventually include international travel. Caloundra Travel Company’s website is currently under construction, however customers can call (07) 5492 3366, email southeasttours@gmail.com or drop into the centre at 23 Cooma Terrace, Caloundra, where they are sure to receive a warm welcome.

‘Let Us Entertain You’ . . . Musical Divas will Delight

THE spirit of the diva will be channeled and set loose when Noosa Arts Theatre’s production of Jerry’s Girls lights the stage next month. The highly acclaimed musical, created by Jerry Herman and Larry Alford in 1981, began as a modest presentation at Onstage, a nightclub located in the Theatre District in midtown-Manhattan (New York City). The New York Times called it “a brilliantly lively and scintillating evening of cabaret.” After La Cage aux Folles opened to rave reviews two years later, producer Zev Bufman approached the pair and suggested they mount a full-scale, allstar version. On February 28, 1984, the expanded Jerry’s Girls premiered at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach, Florida, with

Carol Channing, Andrea McArdle, and Leslie Uggams, backed by an allfemale chorus, recreating scenes and songs from Herman’s hits. Polydor Records released an original cast recording. After fourteen previews, the Broadway production, directed by Alford and choreographed by Wayne Cilento, opened on December 18, 1985 at the St. James Theatre. It ran for 141 performances. New cast members Dorothy Loudon and Chita Rivera joined Uggams. Chita Rivera was nominated for her role in this musical at the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical at the 1986, 40th Tony Awards. The ‘girls’ in the title refers to, not only all the female characters created by Jerry Herman and his collaborators, but also, all

MULTI award winning singer / songwriter / guitarist Dave Reynolds and the Travelling Country Show Band will take you on a thoroughly enjoyable recollection of the Australian legend Slim Dusty at The Events Centre, Caloundra this September. It’s been over a decade since Slim walked under the Stage Lights and held audiences spellbound, with ballads and stories of not only the bush but also the city; songs of mateship, the battlers, people that built our country, drovers, shearers, cooks, stories of trains, truckies, rodeos, and just about anything else you can think of. All will be found in Slims’ songs. Some will bring a tear to the eye; some will make you howl with laughter. All will entertain you and probably bring back a memory or two. Not only was Slim one of Australia’s biggest selling recording

artists, but he also recorded more albums than any other Australian. He was the first Australian Artist to be awarded a Gold Record overseas and the first in the world to have his music beamed down from Outer Space. With a stellar career that spanned many decades, he just seemed to gain more and more fans as the years went by. “I am honoured to have had the opportunity to have worked with him and am proud to be able to bring this show to his legions of fans as a tribute to an Australian Icon and decent bloke” said Dave Reynolds. HENRY V – Brothers in Arms is an inspiring Bell Shakespeare play that is not to be missed. Experience quality theatre at your door step with the only performance on the Sunshine Coast at The Events Centre, Caloundra. Damien Ryan’s vision for Henry V is inspired by a true story – in 1941, for 57 consecutive nights during the London Blitz, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed a new play each week and would then perform it for others in the shelter. This production explores the rite of passage that violence and conflict offer as a threshold to manhood. It confronts the fact that – for all the horrors of war – true courage and brotherhood can inspire remarkable achievements. In this gripping new Henry V, a talented young cast tell the story of a king who unites his ‘band of brothers’ and a nation with his eloquent words and ideas, his triumphs and humanity. When the battle is won, this production will leave you feeling uplifted and exhilarated with the belief that the impossible is possible. The Bell Shakespeare vision is to create theatre that allows audiences of all walks of life to see themselves reflected and transformed through the prism of great writing. Enjoy an outstanding Theatre experience with this uplifting play by one of the greatest writers of all time. ‘There’s a reason the name Bell Shakespeare has become synonymous with quality theatre.’ – ArtsHub. Art For Scaredy Cats ARE you a scaredy cat when it comes to doing art? Did you do some art at one stage in your life, or once attended an art workshop, and really loved it, but have never done any art since because you are scared? Did someone say something mean about your art that made you sad, as well as scared? “Fear not!” said art-lover Vicki Johnson, who has established a new art group called ‘Art for Scaredy Cats.” The group will meet on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Caloundra Arts Association Centre, at 5 North Street, Caloundra. “The group is perfect for scaredy cats,” Vicki explained, “There are lots of people who don’t do art or join art groups because they think they have no talent or creativity: they are scared that everyone else will be much better than them and make them feel embarrassed and demoralised.” Cost: $5.00 plus membership of the Caloundra We Hire & Art Association. While aimed squarely at the younger set this is a show for all ages, with laughter, song and a very reluctant dragon. Set in the snow covered village of Deepdene, it tells the story of a very small peace loving (non fire breathing) dragon) who simply wants to live quietly in a cave above the village.
