This year, November 11 – Remembrance Day – will mark the 97th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered

in all wars and armed conflicts.

And on a celebratory note, the first Tuesday in November marks Melbourne Cup day ... when the nation stops again to become horse-racing experts for a day and take that once-ayear punt on our favourite horses.

Some will go to the track and dress to sparkle; sharing champagne, wine and gourmet foods with the gla-

mour of the moment.

And others who don’t make it to the track will gather with friends, share a drink and watch a live broadcast of the great race while exuberantly willing their favourites home.

Women join new hub at Caloundra IT CAN be about anything – from learning how to wear a sari, where to turn for personal help and support, the best beaches to take the kids to or even buy groceries at the right price – and it’s all available at the Women’s Global Hub at Caloundra.

Every Tuesday a group of women meet over lunch at the Community Centre in Queen St. They are living on the Sunshine Coast, having come from countries like Germany, Indonesia, England, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, India and the Philippines.

They all have something in common – a willingness to share their diverse cultural backgrounds, their knowledge and to make friends.

The Global Hub was started last year by Stella Romagnoli-Passeggi, from Uruguay, who admits to a passion for assisting migrants. Five years ago she was awarded the 2010 inaugural Sunshine Coast Multicultural Excellence Award for her work in setting up a multicultural women’s group at the Univer-

Three years later she and her husband Harry Passeggi were inducted into the Sunshine Coast Multicultural Awards Hall of Fame and the Global Hub followed soon after.

Stella says there can be up to 20 women at the lunches.

“What we’re doing is providing a safe, stable and friendly environment for women coming to stay at the Sunshine Coast so they can learn from each other.

“Among these ladies are some amazing resources.

We have a human rights’ lawyer, a teacher, an audiologist and administrators and they all bring plenty of variety and plenty of knowledge.

“There’s a lot of fun, too.

In August we celebrated Pakistan and India’s Independence Day and one of the ladies brought a bagful of saris for everyone and showed us how to put a sari on and how to wear it.”

THE Melbourne Cup – Australia’s pre-eminent horse race held on the first Tuesday of November each year – is known as the race that stops a nation.

And it certainly does.

The winner of the first Melbourne Cup race – run in 1861– was 16.3 hand bay stallion Archer in a time of 3.52.00, ridden by John Cutts.

And since then Australia has embraced Melbourne Cup Day as one of the country’s most popular racing and social days – we dress up, drink champagne, and have that once-a-year flutter on our sentimental favourites. The race is televised live to an audience of about 650 million people worldwide.

More than 100,000 people will descend on Flemington racecourse for the big race day and many people will stop what they are doing shortly before 3pm on the day to watch or listen to the main race either via television, internet or the radio.

At the racetrack, people dress up – many women dress to kill on the day with some participating in fashion parades on the field.

Marquees are set up for VIP guests, including national and international celebrities.

The race is run over 3200m under handicap conditions and is worth more than $6m in prize money.

Last year’s Cup was won by Protectionist from Red Cadeaux with Who Shot Thebarman third.

A UK study involving men over 65 has found just two minutes a day of hopping can strengthen hip bones and reduce the risk of fractures during falls.

The study, that measured

the effects of daily hopping exercises over one year in 34 men aged over 65, showed improved bone density in the hopping leg (the study group did not include women).

The report of the study, conducted by the Loughborough University Na-

tional Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), was published in the September issue of leading bone publication Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Improvements occurred in the thinnest areas of the bone most at risk of fracture.

Solo man takes on Bass Strait

Peter and Julie will paddle 332km across Bass Strait.

IN THE late 80s Peter Fidler was the Schweppes Solo Man. TV viewers thrilled at his commercials as he fought furious river rapids on his kayak or slid down a flying fox over a heaving waterfall before dropping 10 metres to the pool below to rescue his can of Solo.

His feats of daring and his ability to skull the can without taking a breath made him the stuff of heroes. He was the Marlboro Man of soft drink.

Next month 59-year-old Peter, who lives at Noosa, will again send out a challenge to nature, but this

time it will be the real thing and he won’t be going solo.

With wife Julie, 59, and 10 others (eight men and two women) from his learn-tosurf company Go Ride a Wave, he will leave Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria and paddle 332km across treacherous Bass Strait to the north-western tip of Tasmania.

A dual World Masters surf ski champion, Peter came to Noosa nearly seven years ago to develop Go Ride a Wave on Noosa’s West Beach. The company also has schools on the Gold Coast, Northern New South Wales and along the west coast of Victoria.

He told Seniors the party was planning to leave on December 12. “We’ll start at Tidal River, paddling on the western side of Wilson’s Promontory around the headland to Little Waterloo Bay. We’ll camp for the night and then tackle the first big, open water stretch to Hogan Island.

“From there we’ll kayak to either Erith or Deal Island, depending which way the wind is blowing, and then

on to Flinders Island, the main island on the way across. We’ll paddle to the bottom end of Flinders and then 17km to Tasmania.

“We’re allowing 14 days which will take us up to Boxing Day but we’re hoping to be home for Christmas. It’s seven days of actual paddling and we’ll probably have a couple of rest days somewhere in the middle. The weather, however, might force us to

Both Julie and Peter are in solid training. They paddle 10km three or four times a week and usually a longer one of 25km. They swim three to four kilometres a week and fit in gym work and yoga.

THE largest number of Light Horse troopers since WW1 paraded down Woombye’s main street in celebration of Beersheba’s 98th anniversary.

During the battle of Beersheba in the Sinai desert in WW1, the Light Horse regiment was pivotal in the victory in the 3rd battle of Gaza.

The Woombye comemoration was celebrated by war veterans comprising nurses in dress from the era and the Woombye Light Horse Troop in uniform for the street parade. A Beersheba Day service followed.

Wartime tales to boost exhibition

NOOSA heritage librarian Jane Harding says Noosa’s home front during the First World War was just as important to locals as any battleground.

With the help of Noosa News, Noosa Library is collecting wartime family treasures and memorabilia to tell the story of what life was like for those who stayed at home at Noosa from 1914-1918.

The project – Noosa War Front – will be launched as an exhibition on Remembrance Day, November 11.

“What we have so far is a picture of a community that, even in its earliest days, was incredibly passionate and giving to causes close to its heart,” Ms Harding said.

“For the duration of the war (and beyond) each of

the towns in Noosa Shire kept up a steady stream of patriotic activities, farewelling and welcoming home local boys, and organising a wide variety of fundraising events.

“These took many forms – dances and concerts that often included raffles or auctions. The items (horses, cows, pigs, chooks, honey, butter ...) were all donated by locals and, once raffled, the winner would donate the item back to be auctioned, thus making money twice on each donation.”

Jane said her two volunteer

researchers, Irene Christie, of Tewantin and Beth Wallace, of Cooroy, had spent “amazing” hours trolling online newspapers of the time such as the Gympie Times, Nambour Chronicle and the Courier Mail.

“The papers report these events in minute detail down to who gave what and how much it raised.

There also are detailed descriptions of peace and welcome-home celebrations.

Many of the names mentioned in the articles would be very familiar to longtime local residents.

“Unfortunately, as yet, we have found very few photos of any of these fundraising events or activities. Hopefully, this story might spark a memory of an old photograph in an album and encourage the owner to share it with the library.

photos from the era, that would be the icing on the cake.”

Tribute to war widows THE War Widows’ Guild of Australia celebrated its 70th anniversary on October 16 with a reflection of its history since its birth in 1945.

At its peak, the guild boasted 65,000 members and delivered its mission of care and support to widows of war.

Its mission statement, which remains relevant today, is: “ We all belong to each other. We all need each other. It is in serving each other and in sacrificing for our common good that we are finding our true life”.

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of Anzac, Stuart Robert, congratulated the guild at a dinner marking the milestone.

Adrian strikes a chord on Coast

Music has always been in Adrian’s life. He received his musical training at the Guildhall School of Music in London, specia-

lising in singing, conducting, piano and french horn and is a licentiate of the Trinity College of Music.

But Adrian wouldn’t be with us had it not been for a young surfer from Minyama, Baron Symes, looking for waves in the north of England.

This led to Baron and his mate Craig Smith marrying Adrian’s two daughters, Sarah and Louise, both professional string players, moving to the Coast to live and, eight years later, in 2006, Adrian and his soprano wife Helen following them to be with family.

THOSE who know Sunshine Coast conductor and musical director Adrian King say he seems to run rather than walk and, when you look at his performance schedule for the four weeks leading up to Christmas, it’s easy to see why.

On November 21 he will present The Proms at Kawana with the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra, then on December 12, Enchanted Carols with the Cello Dreaming Ensemble at Eudlo.

The following night he will conduct the Sunshine Coast Choral Society with its celebration of Christmas music at Caloundra and on December 18 and 19 Noosa Chorale’s Christmas Wassail at Noosa Junction.

Older folks learning to code MANY young people – and those well into their eighties – are learning to code.

Coding is what drives computer applications from websites to games, from refrigerators to jet fighters.

And demand for coders continues to grow as more and more day-to-day activities rely on algorithms to function.

The coding community numbers hundreds of millions yet you would be lucky to find more than a token number of schools in Australia that teach it or perhaps even know about it.

I plan to change that in my voluntary capacity ... and I

invite seniors to join in. If you have an interest and believe you can participate, I would like to hear from you.

I show kids how to code using a fantastic free online application such as Scratch. Today there are millions of Scratch users around the world ranging in age from six to 86 (and probably older). Scratch is a great first step on the coding journey but it also trains the brain in ways purpose-built applications only dream about.

You can start playing with Scratch by simply going to the website at http:// scratch.mit.edu and selecting create. By logging in,

you can immediately join the Scratch community.

There is a growing demand for facilitators as well, so if you would like to lend your expertise then please get in touch and I will organise classes to give you the necessary skills or lead you to a group in your area doing something similar.

AMA welcomes age care’s return to health portfolio THE Australian Medical Association welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to return responsibility for aged care to the health portfolio.

Aged care has been missing the public and political focus it deserves in recent times.

It is vital that the health needs of older Australians are considered as a key component of the broader health policy debate, and it is fitting that aged care is back with the Health Minister.

Caring for older Australians, whether they live in residential aged care or independently in their own homes, is an integral part of medical practice.

Most older Australians have longstanding relationships with their GP, who is best placed to determine which services will work best for their patient.

Early medical assessment is critical in ensuring that older Australians receive the appropriate support to maintain their level of independence before their so-

cial and health situation deteriorates.

Including the clinical opinion of a patient’s usual treating doctor in the assessment of their care needs, and formulating the care package, should be normal practice. It is currently an optional extra.

We also need to see improved processes to allow doctors to manage the provision of straightforward care, such as wound care,

for older people still living in their own homes.

The aged care sector must be able to provide the level and quality of medical, nursing, and allied health services required to meet the needs of our aging population.

The AMA looks forward to engaging with Health Minister Sussan Ley on aged care policy priorities.

I AM frustrated with property developers building large houses and not considering people who want or need to downsize. I have a three-bedroom house and want to downsize to a oneor two-bedroom home with a little garden for a decent price; not for the same cost as my current home.

The over 50s developments have either three bedroom or two with study or one bedroom and no garden to look after. One of these developments had one-bedroom homes with garden but the washing machine was in the lounge room; I assume in a cupboard, but that wouldn’t stop the noise of the machine.

I have heard of small houses overseas and other states but not in Queensland. Secondly, I am disappointed that no discount is given to those on a senior’s card, for water or rates. My power company, public transport, motor vehicle registration etc. give discounts so why can’t the council and water supplier?

Men are being asked to check their skin regularly.

Cancer checks to help men’s health QUT and Cancer Council researchers have endorsed a tool to assess attitudes of men to skin checks, helping those most at risk to detect melanoma early.

Men 50 years and older are most at risk of being diagnosed with, and dying from, melanoma and are the least likely to detect the cancers themselves or undergo skin checks by a GP. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the study was one of the first of its kind, assessing the attitudes of more than 800 men in Queensland.

“Few studies have measured the factors that may contribute to whether people check their skin to detect melanoma early, or not,” Ms Clift said.

“Our study looked at the effectiveness of the skin self-examination attitude scale (SSEAS) to measure the attitude of Queensland men 50 years and older when it comes to skin checks.

Queenslanders should conduct self skin checks regularly “The research shows the SSEAS is quick, easy to use and reliable in assessing the attitudes of men 50 years and older towards skin checks.

“Men responded to survey questions assessing whether checking their skin made them anxious, whether they were confident in their doctor’s ability to diagnose skin cancer, and whether they thought skin checks would improve their health.

“Only 18 per cent of men surveyed strongly agreed they could examine their skin regularly, even if they had no one to help them.

“Less than half strongly agreed they would go to the doctor straight away after

seeing something suspicious on their skin.

“The tool will enable GPs and health professionals to identify men who may need greater attention or intervention to help them detect skin cancer early.

Ms Clift urged all Queenslanders to protect their skin to cut risks of skin cancer.

“Queenslanders should Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide when the UV Index is three or above to reduce their risk,” Ms Clift said.

“It’s also imperative that Queenslanders check their skin regularly for any changes – if skin cancer is detected early, there’s a greater chance of survival.

“Queenslanders should conduct self skin checks regularly, get to know their skin and visit a doctor if they notice a new spot or lesion, or an existing spot or lesion change in shape, colour or size.”

Historical research group LAST year’s very capable office bearers were returned at the recent Annual General Meeting of Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group.

Win Wynn organised another very successful garage sale in September raising essential funds for the group.

Thanks go to Win and all the members who helped with the set-up and then on the day.

There will be no meeting in November but we look forward to a much valued Noosa member, Cecily Fearnley giving us an informal talk on “Writing Family History for her Grand-

children” at a future date.

Back to school for VIEW Club members

Genealogy Sunshine Coast, Nambour ACTIVITY at the Club in Nambour has kept up its busy schedule with ongoing scanning, indexing and interest groups for DNA, Irish family history and projects led by Carolyn Slade and Wendy McMullen.

Photographing and transcribing cemetery headstones in our area has been a huge project and involved a number of

members over the past six months.

The November Workshop on November 28 will continue in the vein of discovering new skills using the Laptops for Learning theme.

The attendance at the Beginners Course was the best ever.

Unfortunately, Merle was very ill in hospital for the beginning of the

course but librarian, Jan and Carolyn and Wendy carried on until Merle returned for the end of the course.

At the Annual General Meeting, Mary Bishop was elected the new president.

Beefy's pie the best in Australia SUNSHINE Coast Beefy’s Pies have taken out the award in the best glutenfree category at the national Great Aussie Pie Competition at the Fine Food Festival last month.

Owner of the family-run Beefy’s Pies, Mark Hobbs travelled to Sydney to enter the gluten-free Signature Steak Pie (winner), glutenfree Gourmet Sausage Roll (silver award) and Signature Steak Pie (gold award) in the competition that attracted more than 1500 entries from bakers across the country.

“We are over the moon to be named the best glutenfree pie in Australia. Mr Hobbs said.

“I think we won as glutenfree pastry usually does not taste very good or even look remotely like pastry.

“I believe we have created a gluten-free pastry that eats and tastes very close to the normal pastry, that you

won’t believe it’s gluten free.”

The recognition is great news for those living with coeliac disease, a condition that affects approximately one in 70 Australians of all ages, both male and female.

Studies have shown onethird of new patients are diagnosed over the age of 65.

For people suffering with the disease, eating common foods with gluten such as pasta, bread and pastry will make them feel uncomfortable and sick.

Mr Hobbs said he was inspired to launch a glutenfree pie range for his son Michael, who was diagnosed with coeliac disease when he was three.

Now 14, Michael can enjoy a Beefy’s pie.

“Another quality to these pies is they are fully endorsed by Coeliac Australia,” Mr Hobbs said.

Maroochy River’s dark past THE waters of the Maroochy River may seem serene, but history bears witness that tragedies have happened in the past.

Although the river had taken many victims, the first newspaper report of a fatality was in January 1882 when a man named Hill was mauled by a shark at the mouth of the river.

Then, in February 1896 when the river was in flood, 15-year-old Walter Lanham from Yandina was attempting to get home when he fell into the maelstrom.

The small Maroochy community was left in shock.

The beginning of the 20th century found the river just as unpredictable.

On a hot summer’s day in December 1905, five boys, all aged around 21, swimming near the mouth of the river and not realising the strength of the undertow, were swept into the open water. Only four made it back to land.

Joseph Gommersall, a prominent farmer, never got to bury his young son, Victor, as the body was never found.

In January 1923 the river claimed the life of Mrs Elizabeth Morrell. She and her husband were holidaying in Maroochydore to escape the city and enjoy the growing popularity of the beach. A witness at the inquiry stated that the couple entered the water in a notoriously dangerous area on a deserted part of the river. “Where

the couple were bathing was a hole 7ft deep and they got into difficulties in the deep water, with the result that the woman drowned,” he said.

The witness said that when he and others arrived they saw the husband exhausted, trying to drag his deceased wife out of the water.

These stories illustrate the nature of the river which yet was the lifeblood of the growing communities that lined its banks.

To this day the placid wa-

ters that seem serene and inviting to the visitor, must always be treated with due care and respect.

Falls are the most common cause of injury – with numbers rising MORE Australians are being hospitalised for injuries, with falls both the leading cause of injury hospitalisation and the type of injury that has increased the most in recent years, according to a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The report, Trends in hospitalised injury, Australia 1999-00 to 2012-13, looks at injuries that required hospitalisation from July 1,1999 to June 30, 2013.

The yearly number of cases rose from about 327,000 to 447,000 during this period.

“Our report found that the rate of hospitalised injury increased by an average of 1% per year from 1999-00 to 2012-13,” AIHW spokesperson Professor James Harrison said.

“The injury rate was about 1700 per 100,000 people at the beginning of that period but had risen to almost 1900 by the end.”

The most common causes of injury in 2012-13 were

falls (40%) and transport crashes (12%).

During that year over 170,000 people were hospitalised as a result of a fall.

Over half the cases were people aged over 65 years, and most people hospitalised for a fall injury in this group were women.

The average length of stay in hospital as a result of injury was four days, equating to more than 1.7 million days in 2012-13.

Queenslanders urged to keep sun safe CANCER Council is warning Queenslanders to stay SunSmart and check their skin, with new research showing more Queenslanders are being diagnosed with skin cancer than ever before.

Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

Around 133,000 non-melanoma and 3000 melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed in Queensland each year.

Cancer Council spokesperson Katie Clift said the median age for a melanoma diagnosis in Queensland males was 63 years of age and 58 for females.

“We urge all Queenslanders to stay vigilant about being SunSmart and to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide every day,” Ms Clift said.

“It’s never too late to be SunSmart and protect your

Sitting outside at a coffee shop, walking to the shops, hosting a barbecue with friends, going for an afternoon stroll – engaging in these activities in peak UV times without sufficient sun protection can increase the risk of skin cancer.

Sun protection is required when the UV Index is three or above. In Queensland, the UV Index is three or above all year round, so sun protection is required through every season.

SOME men have problems with urine leakage after prostate surgery. This is a common problem that can become one of the biggest challenges during their recovery.

The prostate gland is a male reproductive organ, about the size of a walnut and sits at the base of the bladder. The thin tube (urethra) that carries urine and semen out of the penis runs through the centre of the prostate gland.

Surgery may be required to deal with benign enlargement of the prostate gland if it obstructs or restricts the flow of urine. After enduring what might be years of difficulty getting flow to start, some men are then faced with being unable to get the leak to stop! Stress urinary incontinence is a common occurrence after

surgery for prostate cancer and requires a considerate and understanding approach during management.

The pelvic floor muscles are part of the mechanism that provides voluntary control over the passing of solids, liquids and gases from the body. They can weaken over time especially if straining occurs to empty either bladder or bowel, and they benefit from assessment/retraining ideally before and after surgery.

Surgical approaches for the management of localised prostate cancer have changed considerably even over the past 10 years and the options for improved outcomes are excellent. A team approach is vital to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved for

each and every man. Part of this team is your physiotherapist who has particular expertise in continence management, activity guidance, bladder retraining, pelvic floor rehabilitation and support for return of function and activity during your recovery.

Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can speed up your recovery and reduce leakage faster – if you do not strengthen these muscles the leakage may persist.

2. Be aware that there is always a cycle. The investment markets go through cyclical phases of good times and bad. Some are short term, such as occasional corrections. Some are medium term, such as those that relate to the three-to five-year business cycle. Some are longer, such as the secular swings seen over 10- to 20-year periods in shares. But all eventually contain the seeds of their own reversal.

3. Invest for the long term.

Get a long term plan that suits your level of wealth, age, tolerance of volatility, etc, and stick to it. This may require some investment advice and might also change over the larger cycles of your life for example when you are younger vs when you are older.

4. Diversify. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket as the old saying goes.

Through last decade many wondered what was the point of having global shares in their investment portfolios as Australian shares were doing so well.

But for the last five years or so global shares have been far better performers and have proved their worth.

5. Turn down the noise.

Once you have worked out a strategy that is right for you, it’s important to turn down the noise on the information flow surrounding investment markets.

This is great in a way. But there is little evidence that it’s helping investors make better decisions and hence earn better returns.

6. Buy low, sell high. One reality of investing is that the price you pay for an investment or asset matters a lot in terms of the return you will get. It stands to reason that the cheaper you buy an asset the higher its prospective return will be and vice versa, all other things being equal.

7. Beware the crowd at extremes. The problem with crowds is that eventually everyone who wants to buy will do so and then the only way is down (and vice versa during crowd panics). As Warren Buffet once said the key is to “be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful”.

8. Focus on investments offering sustainable cash flow. If an investment looks too good to be true in terms of the return and risk on offer then it probably is.

By contrast, assets that generate sustainable cash flows (profits, rents, interest payments) and don’t re-

9. Seek advice. Probably the best approach is to simply seek the advice of a coach such as a financial adviser, in much the same way you might use a specialist to look after other aspects of your life like fixing the plumbing, your medical needs or helping you get fit.

I’M SURE many of you remember the “good old days” around the King’s Cross area.

Growing up in Sydney, as teenagers we would occasionally ignore parental advice and drive the Morris Minor through Macleay Street and Darlinghurst Road to gawk at all the weirdo types as if they came from another planet. If we had enough money, we’d stop in at the old El Rocco, a subterranean cave where great jazz musicians like Don Burrows and George Golla performed regularly.

In other words, King’s Cross was a place that most suburbanites would go for a naughty time out, “but wouldn’t want to live there”.

Of course it’s all had to change. Rising inner-city property prices have seen to that. Not only has there been a big clean-up of the streets and the “undesirables”, but liquor laws now force bottle shops to close at 10pm and there’s a 1.30am lockout from licensed premises.

The early morning harddrinking crowd has moved on, to the relief of the local residents and cops, though resented by those businesses affected. It’s a transition which will re-balance the suburb considerably and move real estate prices higher still.

In fact, King’s Cross is not a suburb, nor a postcode.

It’s a village called Potts Point, which has a much more genteel ring to it.

Even the four-star Mercure Hotel, right above King’s Cross station, is now called Mercure Potts Point. The hotel is a natural vantage point from which to view street life, the changes tak-

ing place and the new vibe around the precinct. It’s also a much safer place to walk around, even at night.

There’s more to it than just a name change. Gentrification brings with it a different demographic, a more sophisticated crowd intent on moving the market up…in style, fashion and naturally, price. A few years ago, five-star restaurants were thin on the ground, but now there are many contenders in the upscale eateries normally associated with The Rocks, Surry Hills, Darling Harbour and the CBD. Fortunately, there hasn’t been wholesale destruction of the heritage listed Art Deco buildings and Victor-

ian terraces which are ripe for renovation. It’s to be hoped that strict planning regulations will allow for modernisation without ruining the character of the area.

In short, Potts Point is a work in progress and while the transition may take some time, there’s a fresh new feel about the area with not only restaurants but galleries such as the Cross Art Project springing up. The Statesmen are celebrating 25 years of a cappella singing on the Sunshine Coast and would love former members of the chorus to come along to help them celebrate this significant milestone.

Pop up artists on display at Butter Factory

INNOVATIVE potter, Sandra Viney, will be one of three pop up artists with an individual display at the Pop Up Artists galleries at the Cooroy Butter Factory for the months of October and November.

Sandra’s diverse pots will include both traditional and contemporary forms, designed with interesting techniques such as hand embellishment and penetration of the clay as well as underglazes overlaid with brilliant clear glazes which give the work a beautiful glow.

Sandra was inspired by Singapore potter Donald Eric Lim after seeing illustrations of his work.

These techniques are very time consuming and hard on the eyes and hands, but in the end, the results are very pleasing. Sandra Originally became involved with clay many years ago and in retirement found she had time to further pursue her interest.

As a result of her renewed enthusiasm and under the guidance of Monique Jeungling at the Cooroy Butter Factory she now describes

Art Market in the Paddock, Pomona POMONA Railway Station Gallery’s Summer Art Market is being held in the paddock adjoining the gallery, 10 Station St, Pomona, on Saturday, November 28, from 9am-1pm.

Music and entertainment will be provided by local bush band Flash Jack, and homemade goodies and refreshments will be available to buy.
