Jackson stretches his wings!

By Gill MacDonald OUR grandchildren are very adept at showing us seniors how to use emerging computer and mobile phone technology but at Suncoast Model Flyers the seniors are mentoring the younger generation and bringing together grandparents, parents and grandchildren as partners in exploring the shared passion of aero model flying. In the past, model aircraft were built for collections or display and a daring few even flew them for fun. Today, these models can have wingspans approaching 20 feet and run on multiple small jet engines. At a neatly maintained

little airfield, just off Coolum-Yandina Road you will find members of the club, aged from 5 years to 85 years, particularly during school holidays and at weekends. Wynn Butler, a member of Suncoast Model Flyers, has been teaching his 11 year old grandson Jackson to fly. Jackson, under the guidance of Ray Dixon, one of the club’s senior instructors, has just proudly passed his Bronze Wings test enabling him to fly his own model.

You can meet Jackson and Wynn along with other club members at their spectacular ANZAC Tribute Day on Sunday 27 April. See inside on Page 2 for all the details of what promises to be a thrilling day for people of all ages.

community news Flying High in a tribute to our ANZACs ON the ANZAC Sunday 27th April, from 9.00am to 3.00pm, the Suncoast Model Flyers will present their ‘ANZAC Military Spectacular’, a tribute to our servicemen and women. The show will be held at the Club aerodrome at Quanda Road, Coolum off CoolumYandina Road Unlike other air shows the club has held in the past, this show is not focused just on the flying of radio control model aircraft, but for the first time a number of full size displays will be included as well.

The show will kick off a helicopter from Oaky Army Flying Base due to fly in at 9am after which the model flying will commence.

Several excellent display pilots from around the State have been chosen and we can expect a spectacular show of large scale military aircraft flying low and close.

As President Tony Thornton said, “Trust me, it gets exciting when a huge scale P47 Thunderbolt with a big radial engine on the front comes racing through

just centimetres off the ground!

“Scale model turbine jet aircraft will feature too.

These models have engines exactly the same as their full size counterparts. The miniature turbine engines run on the same Jet-A1 fuel and spin up to 130,000 rpm and can rocket the aircraft through the air at over 300kph,” said Tony.

Old classic aircraft will not be forgotten either, with old WW1 triplanes and biplanes puttering past in scale formation.

Military radio control helicopters, renowned to be a bit of a handful to fly, will also feature, with some of the best pilots in the State putting on a show.

At midday it’s the big attraction, with a full size Russian military YAK18T and YAK-52 flying over, low and in close formation. The YAK-18T will then peel away and leave the YAK-15 to do a low level aerobatic display for the crowd.

These aircraft are part of the Warbirds Sunshine Coast fleet and are owned

by Derek Townsend, a member of the Suncoast Model Flyers club. Members of the public will be able to book a flight in one of these aircraft at our show. It will be an amazing display, definitely not to be missed!

Cast your eyes to the skies at around this time as a number of parachutists from the Ramblers Skydivers will be dropping in and landing on the runway.

Around midday there will be a parade of old military vehicles and vintage motorcycles. These will be on display all day and

you can have a chat to the owners about their history.

The radio control model tanks club of Moreton Bay will also be there with some amazing and unusual models and the Caloundra Aircraft Museum will put on a display.

The littlies haven’t been forgotten either, with a jumping castle, fairy floss, foam ‘chucky’ planes and other attractions for them, plus great food, music and full com-

mentary throughout the day.

Gates open at 8.30am.

This action-packed day, fully supported by the RSL, will cost you just a nominal entry fee, withfamily passes, discount entry for pensioners, and children under 10 entering free.

Next steps for Gallipoli 2015 ballot

42,582 applications were received from Australians planning to attend the Dawn Service at Gallipoli in 2015, marking 100 years since the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops during the First World War. The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson, said the government’s contracted ticket provider would now begin the process of confirming applications.

“Ticketek will review and remove any duplicate, incomplete or incorrect applications before the ballot is drawn. The ballot draw is automated and comprises of four cascades, providing some preference for direct descendants and veterans with qualifying or overseas service,” Senator Ronaldson said.

“Outside the ballot, there are places for Australian First World War widows who will be included as part of Australia’s official representative group and 400 places for secondary school children and their chaperones.”

Senator Ronaldson said all ballot applicants, successful and unsuccessful, will be notified of the outcome before Anzac Day 2014.

“Successful applicants are encouraged to make and pay for all travel arrangements as soon as they receive confirmation of their success in the ballot.

This needs to include flights, accommodation,

transport and travel insurance. Proof of travel such as an airline ticket or tour package must be provided to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs by 25 October 2014 in order to receive attendance passes,” Senator Ronaldson said.

“Those who are unsuccessful, and who elected to be on the waitlist, will be notified of any passes that may become available from those who can no longer attend, up until 31 March 2015.

“Alternatively, unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to visit Gallipoli at another time in 2015, attend another Anzac Day service overseas such as Villers-Bretonneux in France, or watch the broadcast of the Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux services live on the ABC on Anzac Day.” Senator Ronaldson said a full program of activities would be rolled out over the Anzac Centenary period 2014-2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the First World War. He encouraged communities across Australia to get involved by applying to their local federal Member of Parliament for funding under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. There is funding of up to $125,000 per electorate which needs to be applied for before 30 May 2014. Seasons honours past residents with memorial garden CURRENT residents and family members of passed residents of Seasons Private Aged Care at Waterford West gathered today to official open the new Reflection Garden Memorial for residents who have passed. According to Seasons Waterford Community Manager, Barbara Booth, the ceremonial garden commemorates past residents and provides a place for current residents, staff and families to work through their grief. “When a resident passes away, it impacts staff and other residents and this garden provides a way to formally acknowledge their loss and reduce their levels of anxiety and grief,” Barbara said. “The garden which consists of beautiful water features has white stones with the names of each resident who has passed arranged around it.

“From today, each time a resident passes, a ritual to remember the resident will be held to allow family, friends and staff to name a white stone

and place it in the beautiful garden.

“It is a tranquil setting and the named white stones convey the message of strength, stability, remembrance and joy,” she said. Barbara said the concept of the Reflection Garden was conceived by Seasons residents, friends and families who were looking for a way to remember their loved ones.

“The concept began very small, but with the help and support of the local community it has grown into a beautiful garden for reflection,” Barbara said. A memorial plaque naming the garden and dedicating it to the residents of Seasons Waterford West was unveiled by daughters of long term past residents, Gaye Keir and Carole Dunn and current resident representative, Mary Torr.

The unveiling of the reflection garden was attended by more than 50 Seasons residents, staff, families and friends with afternoon tea and live entertainment held afterwards.

Retirees more comfortable about super returns

RETIREES are feeling more confident about their retirement income as a result of improving returns from their superannuation, a new report has found.

The 2nd Seniors Sentiment Index released

by National Seniors and commissioned by Challenger, gauged 2,000 older Australians’ views on different aspects of their

life as well as their views of society as a whole. The overall Seniors Sentiment Index increased from 66% in 2012 to 72% in 2013, reflecting growing positivity from seniors about their finances, health and social wellbeing.

National Seniors Australia chief executive, Michael O’Neill, said the number of

retirees who were confident that their superannuation would be adequate in retirement increased from 44% in 2012 to 61% in 2013.

“This is a result of sustained recovery in equity markets and a rising share market producing better returns,” Mr O’Neill said.

But while confidence in retirement income had increased in the past 12 months, senior Australians were not so optimistic about their financial wellbeing over the next five years.

Paul Rogan, Challenger chief executive of distribution, product and marketing, said: “It’s hard for retirees to have long term confidence in their super when so much of it is at the mercy of share market cycles.

“Government and industry must work together to deliver better super outcomes for our people once they’re retired and living off their savings.”

In the social wellbeing stakes, the report found a notable increase in

satisfaction with the Australian political system, with those ‘at least somewhat satisfied’ increasing from 21% to 30%.

“This may be attributed to the survey being conducted within two months of the federal election and the result of a change in government but overall it is noticeable there is still considerable dissatisfaction with our political system,” Mr O’Neill said.

The proportion of seniors who felt ‘very’ or ‘somewhat satisfied’ with the government’s level of spending in the health system increased from 17% in 2012 to 24% in 2013 which also reflected small improvements in satisfaction ratings in being able to get a doctor’s appointment when necessary.

The 2nd Seniors Sentiment Index follows the inaugural Seniors Sentiment Index which was released in December 2012.

You will be receiving a phone call shortly to arrange a time for an engineer to complete the installation process.

You will need to ensure that the new computer is stored safely under lock and key until the engineer arrives.

Please allow a six-week period from the second week of February for the installation of your new computer. Do not install the computer yourself as it may affect the warranty!

Your new touchscreen computer will operate on Microsoft Windows 8. You have probably used a computer running on Microsoft Windows before; however, Windows 8 has introduced some major changes.

The main screen of Windows 8 looks like a series of coloured tiles from

which you launch programs by tapping them with your finger or clicking them with your mouse. These are called ‘Live Tiles’. Familiar programs like Word, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer will still work the way you’re used to. Windows 8 looks very different to previous versions of Windows but you will soon get used to it and see how easy it is to use. A series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) have been developed to help answer the many questions you may have about the new computer. THE nation’s biggest community-based environment event is just around the corner and local residents are urged to get involved. Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday 2 March and Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to register areas they’d like to clean up or join in with a site already registered.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the annual event was a chance for everyone to pitch in and help reduce our impact on the environment. “The great thing about Clean Up Australia Day is that it enables people to pick out their favourite spot to clean up on the day – like a park, a beach or an area of bush reserve,” she said.

“Council is very pleased to support this event as it aligns with our strategies, programs and initiatives that aim for a cleaner environment and ensuring that more waste can be dealt with to best industry standards. “Council will provide free waste disposal as well as arrange waste and recyclables collection for all registered sites in the Sunshine Coast region for the event. “Last year’s event saw more than half a million volunteers around the country remove just over 16,000 tonnes of rubbish, including more than 20 tonnes of rubbish removed from our local area. This was a fantastic effort and we’re hoping to see this support continue.”

Surge protection is the first and simplest thing you should do for your computer. There are many surge protectors on the market ranging anywhere from $15 for a basic power-board, through to $400 for an Uninterrupted Power Supply or UPS. If you have the internet connected through the phone line, it is important to use the phone protection on the surge protector. To do this, simply insert the phone line into the surge protector and then insert the modem line into the other line connection on the board. It is a little known fact that your computer is more likely to get a power surge through the phone line then the electrical lines. I replaced four modems and network cards that week as a result lightning strike to the phone lines.

A UPS is also an option for people with expensive equipment. It is not only a surge protector but also provides battery power for 10-20 minutes which will allow you to safely power off all your computer equipment, rather then the power cut off unexpectedly and the computer turn off without properly shutting down.

Please, set up a back up system for your computer! I would recommend purchasing an external hard drive, or partition another hard drive within your computer ready to back up your data.

Windows has their own built-in back up and recovery software, or you can buy or download third party back up software like Genie, Arconis, or Paragon. If you are using your computer regularly would suggest you set up an automated back up of your computer to run once a week, at the very least, of at least a monthly back for those who spend little time on it. This will make sure that if the worst does happen you may only lose up to a month of data.

Finally, if you hear of a lightning storm approaching and you are at home, it would be prudent to shut down your computer safely and then unplug it from the wall and modem. Safety first!

These simple tips will help lengthen the life of your expensive equipment and also save your precious memories and other valuable information you come to rely on from your computer.

RSL Care CEO, Mr Craig Mills said the 2013 Christmas Appeal had raised more than $66,000 dollars so far.

“This is a fantastic outcome for residents as funds raised will go directly to provide meaningful activities to increase social connection and participation with the outside world, increase self-esteem and reduce anxiety and depression.

“At 92 years-old Archie lives at RSL Care Fairview Retirement Community, Pinjarra Hills, Queensland.

“He is a true hero with a remarkable story of courage and survival under fire and of an enduring optimism and love for life and without the support of the community; we cannot go the extra mile.”

Mr Mills said it wasn’t too late to donate to the Christmas Appeal, as RSL Care hoped to reach its target of $100,000.

THE current Queensland Musuem’s Collectomania display in Brisbane features objects owned by Sunshine Valley and Nambour accumulators, with 1.2 million people expected to view their beloved items.

In a special section dedicated to the Sunshine Plantation’s, Big Pineapple, items came from the collections of former long-time employees Dot Fruscalzo, 26 years, and Patricia Sanda, 33 years, and also from the Nambour Museum.

Nambour Museum secretary Barbara Want said the museum felt very privileged to have some of its items displayed in the Queensland Museum in Brisbane.

she started collecting souvenirs when she was working at the Big Pineapple.

“I would get one item when it was released, then add another until over the years I have collected many, many objects reflecting a very special time in my life,” she said.

community news Caloundra Family History Research Group CALOUNDRA Family History Research Inc held a very successful Grand Opening ceremony at their new research facility on Saturday the 1st February 2014. Located at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club, at Corbould Park in Pierce Avenue, Caloundra, more than 70 members and visitors attended, along with Hon. Jarrod Bleijie, SCRC Councillor Tim Dwyer, representatives from History Queensland, Qld Family History Society and other regional societies. The group’s Patron Hon. Mark McArdle and Patroness Judy McArdle cut the ribbon at the Library simultaneously with Sunshine Coast Turf Club CEO Mick Sullivan who cut the ribbon to the Meeting Room. All were invited to tour the premises, and during the morning tea that followed, an official cake was cut by CFHRI President June Blackburn.

Patchwork & Quilters Group

ON Wednesday 4th February, 2014 we had our first outing for the year. Quite a few of our crafty ladies arrived at the “Maleny Magic Patchwork & Quilts” for morning tea and a chat together about quilting.

We were treated to a lovely spread and a hot cuppa. After catching up about what we did over Xmas we were given a demonstration of how to make hexagons by Lyn Woolbank. There were so many materials to choose from and some great ideas that we were inspired to go home and get our machines out and start creating some quilts of our own.

Beverley Perel showed us some easy to make quilts and had some interesting tips to make the job easier. Brenda Sampson was kept busy at the counter with the many purchases being made. All in all it was a great sociable morning by the sound of the chatter being heard from behind the rows of beautiful fabrics.

International Women’s Day 2014

THE Salvation Army Nambour is inviting local residents to attend a free community open day on Saturday 1st March to help celebrate the opening of their new facility at 4-6 Maud Street Nambour.

Featuring family entertainment, free food and plenty of information stalls, the Salvos “New Skins” Fair will run from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Spokesperson Lieutenant John Humbley said the “New Skins” Fair will mark a new start for The Salvation Army in Nambour.

“The celebration is designed to inform the public that The Salvation Army is more than just a helping hand, we are

part of the whole community,” he said.

Lieutenant Leisa Humbley said there will be fun and games for the whole family.

DEEMING is used to calculate a persons’ income in relation to their qualification for a Social Security aged pension, benefit or allowance payment.

Under the current Age Pension rules, if you own financial investments, such as shares and term deposits, and you plan to claim the Age Pension, then that ‘income’ calculated for the financial

assets you own, under the Age Pension income test, is not the actual income earned on those investments. The income counted from financial investments when working out your eligibility for the Age Pension is known as ‘deemed income’.

Deemed income is an assumed rate of return even when that rate isn’t necessarily what you

actually earn on your investment. The idea is that deeming encourages you to earn more income from your investments and reduces the extent that your pension payments may vary.

From 1 January 2015, the current deeming rules will be extended to include superannuation accountbased income streams so that long term income streams will then be

classified as financial investments. This will mean at that point all financial assets will be assessed under the same deeming rules and superannuation accountbased income streams will be included in the calculation of income which may affect the aged pension allowance.

The good news is, all products held by pensioners before 1 January 2015 will be grandfathered indefinitely and continue to be assessed under the existing rules for the life of the product so no current pensioner will be affected, unless they choose to change superannuation pension products. Superannuation pensions in place before 1 January 2015 will continue to be assessed under the current Age Pension income test rules for super pensions.

Certain ‘trigger’ events however could result in a pre Jan 1 2015 income stream being assessed under the new rules and include: you lose your entitlement to an income support payment; your income stream is rolled over to another pension provider or fund; two or more of your income streams are consolidated.

It is important to discuss these upcoming changes with a financial adviser and timely to review your current investment strategy and make any appropriate changes prior to January 1st 2015.

100 years of fundraising RED Cross is celebrating its centenary in Australia this year and during March the annual Red Cross Calling Appeal will mark one hundred years of fundraising by Red Cross volunteers right throughout the country.

Australia joined the growing international Red Cross movement soon after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

The Roma Branch of Red Cross in outback Queensland was typical of the hundreds of new Red Cross branches that opened up around the country to support the war effort.

Local Red Cross volunteer Myrtle Flower reportedly wore out four pairs of shoes walking house to house to collect money to purchase a Red Cross field ambulance that was later sent to Egypt. http://centenary.redcross.org.au/ groups/determined-doorknocker Most of the enthusiastic, young Australian soldiers that were recruited in 1914 were first sent to Egypt for training before being shipped to Gallipoli in 1915.

For Australia, the First World War still remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, 60,000 were

killed and 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner.

During World War 11 Red Cross also volunteers worked tirelessly providing medical supplies, refrigeration for military hospitals and comfort for injured soldiers, food parcels for prisoners of war and much needed funds for air raid victims.

Red Cross still relies heavily on the generosity of individuals and community groups to raise funds for its vital work. Today Red Cross runs a huge, diverse range of programs with a network of 90 regional offices, 180 shops and first aid training all dedicated to helping vulnerable people.

During Red Cross Calling local members, supporters, schools and community groups come out in force to conduct collections or organise fundraising activities. “What a fabulous night – the best night we’ve ever had at the village,” resident Malcolm said.

Ms Debra Cottrell, CEO of Carers Queensland said, “In Queensland alone, it is estimated that over $8 billion in resources would be required each year to replace the work carried out by unpaid family carers.”

Carers Queensland represents the diverse needs and interests of carers in Queensland. “It is important to remember that carers do what they do because they love the person they are doing it for; and to recognise that carers often have different needs to the people for whom they provide care,” she said. Carers Queensland empowers carers by providing carers with information, education, training, advocacy, counselling and other support services that may assist them in their caring role.

There is no need to become a recluse! The good news is that for most people these problems can either be cured or at least better managed. You can lead a normal life and you no longer need to plan activities around the toilet. Incontinence and continence problems affect people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. Despite popular opinion, older people are not the only ones affected.

Bladder and bowel control problems are not an inevitable part of ageing.

Whether you are young, old or somewhere in between, you will find reasons a’plenty for not going to the mat. (I speak from experience!).

But go to the mat you must! That special time – your yoga session – is an opportunity created by you to raise your conscious awareness, little by little, and use that incremental wisdom to assist you in your daily life.

There will be physical improvements; greater strength and flexibility; improved stamina; greater

lung capacity and control of the breath, and… taking control, harnessing that most powerful “muscle”: training the mind.

And the big secret is, it is not hard to do, it’s actually quite easy.

The difficulty lies in developing the right frame of mind to allow training to take place.

Some of the qualities needed in your training toolbox are patience, tolerance, commitment, and a strong will.

You may find yourself saying, “Well, I don’t see myself as having those qualities, so I can’t succeed with a yoga practice”.

You would be quite wrong to allow such a

negative thought to bubble up in your mind.

Day Rehabilitation at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim THE Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim offers a comprehensive range of Day Rehabilitation programs. These are suitable for people who need rehabilitation treatment without

needing to be hospitalised.

As the demographics of the Sunshine Coast continue to change with the ‘baby boomers’ born from 1945 to 1965 getting older, the Sunshine Coast faces an increasing need for services such as these.

Day Rehabilitation may suit people recovering from surgery, a cardiac event, an illness, a stroke, an accident or those dealing with a chronic condition such as arthritis.

Many sufferers of orthopaedic problems in the shoulder, arm, wrist or hand have found these programs of great benefit, as have patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery.

Day Rehabilitation can

also make a big difference to those suffering from neurological conditions such as strokes, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre and Parkinson’s Disease.

A multidisciplinary team including a rehabilitation specialist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and an exercise physiologist assesses each patient and works with them to create an individualised rehabilitation program to help them regain their strength and mobility, to improve coordination, to reduce the risk of falls, and to relearn skills or find new ways of doing things, such as showering and dressing, preparing food, participating in hobbies,

returning to work or driving. This provides the best possible level of independence at work and at home, improving mental and emotional wellbeing.

Treatment is provided in group sessions, individual sessions, or both, depending on the patient’s goals and needs. Sessions can last for two to three hours, once or twice a week.

The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim has agreements with most private health funds and is eligible for funding through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA).

We love Italian food, wine, a certain craziness and “la dolce vita”…the good life. And a holiday in Italy is pretty high on most bucket lists.

So when we decided to go south of Rome instead of north for the first time, the Amalfi Coast beckoned.

We’d heard so much about it, and seen many films and websites, that it seemed like we’d been before.

We were wrong. Hiring a car in Naples, we head south along an autostrada for the first half hour, then there’s a peninsula with twisty, narrow roads until we hit Sorrento… and presto!

The jagged edges of the Amalfi Coast unravel

before us. It’s a daunting prospect as we look at this serpentine route high above the cliffs, and it’s like nothing we’ve expected. Sheer drops, total adrenaline with Vespas buzzing like bees all around and large tour coaches like elephants around the corners. It’s all fun, as long as you can keep your cool [ and temper] in the face of fearless Italian drivers.

Before you reach the city of Salerno there are three main towns to explore, with a huge range of hotels and pensiones…Positano and Amalfi on the coast, and Ravello in the hinterland. They all have charm by the bucketload but are different in every other way. Positano for trendy boutiques and

trattorias specialising in seafood; Amalfi for a busier vibe and nightlife; and Ravello for its ubercool craft shops, the 13th century Villa Rufolo and the Cathedral dating back to the same period.

Ravello is one of the most famous [and touristy] mountain towns in Italy, with good reason.

But for us, the highlight is a small coastal village called Praiano, just a few kilometres from Positano with a quieter, more “authentic” feel and some really good restaurants like La Brace, whose pizzas are worth braving the road trip.

There’s also a bar/café where the locals congregate in the evening and will happily practise their English with you as you sip a Campari or a

the World, and it’s sheer perfection. Balconies look out over the blue Mediterranean and the paler blue sky, creating an effect of merging seamlessly into your allwhite room. It is very hard to get out of bed and leave this setting, even for the lavish buffet breakfast which we ranked as our number one choice in the whole of Italy…and that’s saying something.

showcase for modern art collected by the owner, Signor Cappiello who bought this property in poor condition and has spent a fortune on creating this monument to good taste, Italian style and a sense of humour seen in the glass sculptures by a Mexican artist Sosabravo. The pervasive atmosphere is one of complete relaxation where subtle music, lighting and the scents of lemon and

sandalwood combine to create “a different vision of luxury” as the owner puts it. It’s topped off by a very fine terrace restaurant where Contemporary meets Italy in a very happy marriage.

Avan received international attention when he triumphed at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2012, winning First Prize along with nine special awards.

Hailed as a “pianistic force with an astonishing sensitivity far beyond his years”, Avan Yu has appeared as soloist with orchestras and conductors around the world, including Rafael Fruehbeck de Burgos and the Dresden Philharmonic, Pinchas Zukerman and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he has performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Morocco Philharmonic, Real Filharmonica de Galicia, Slovak Radio Orchestra, Victoria Symphony,

Windsor Symphony, and Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestra. In recital, Avan has performed at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salle Cortot in Paris, and the Nacional Auditorio de Musica in Madrid. He is an avid chamber musician and has collaborated with celebrated musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Cuarteto Casals, Armida Quartett, Johannes Moser, and Geoff Nuttall.

Born in Hong Kong, Avan moved at the age of nine to Vancouver with his family. His teachers

include Kenneth Broadway and Ralph Markham in Vancouver, and Klaus Hellwig at the Berlin University of the Arts.

A TALENTED group of Sunshine Coast performers will present ‘Who Dun It? - A Magatha Mystrie’ comedy musical theatre concert and they need an enthusiastic audience to sing-along, laugh and try to solve the crime.

The fun filled concert has a humorous story line with comedy, dance, music and well known songs and will stimulate wonderful memories and leave the whole audience singing along. The diverse group of well-known local senior performers are rehearsing

two times a week to showcase their unique stage skills.

‘Who Dun It? - A Magatha Mystrie’ is a delightful Comedy Musical Theatre written by playwright Kev Hallewell with a humorous story line, gags , dance, music and well known songs. The concert has a twist with the theft of precious jewellery and some very suspicious characters to be considered when trying to solve the crime.

The concert Director Norma Fox said “I am absolutely thrilled with the

enthusiasm of the cast and the delightful way that they have brought the characters to life. Having to deal with the gangsters and pretty girls has resulted in rehearsal schedule full of laughter and we can’t wait to bring the show to life with the live performance’. Over 20 seasoned local performers have been diligently learning their lines and warming their voices in anticipation that the success of the program will provide ongoing opportunities for senior performers to come out of

the woodwork and tread the boards once again.

council had partnered with the Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc. award and exhibition because it achieved an important synergy with council’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize - a local focus within a nationally recognised art competition.

“This partnership provides a significant opportunity for local artists to be showcased as a part of the nationally recognised Sunshine Coast Art Prize,” she said.

There is an attractive prize pool up for grabs totalling $6,250 which includes a People’s Choice award to be announced at 6pm on Friday 22 August 2014.

“Forty finalists will be announced on 19 May 2014 and their artworks will be exhibited at Caloundra Regional Gallery from 9 July to 24 August. All are welcome to attend the exhibition launch and winner presentation at 6pm on Wednesday 9 July.”

Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fest at Imbil

ONE of its greatest exponents coined the term “bonsai guitar”… and that’s still a cool way of looking at the ukulele, that eminently portable, versatile and relatively easy to play four-string instrument that’s glimpsed more and more in mainstream music these days.

And if you’ve ever had the slightest curiosity about it - perhaps wondered if you, too, could strum a uke like Beatle George Harrison or film star William H Macey – then the Queensland town of Imbil is the place to be next month, for Australia’s first Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fest: SCUF for short.

“It starts with an all-star concert on Friday March 14, then continues across the whole weekend with a non-stop round of concerts, workshops, jam sessions, sinagalongs, strolling players, you name it: if it involves a ukulele we’ll be doing it,” says SCUF organiser Lynne Dand.

“And since most of us will be staying here, the fun will go on until late.”

“Here” is the Borumba Deer Park, just outside Imbiltownship, chosen for the inaugural SCUF because it can accommodate anything up to 1,500 festival goers in cabins, caravans, or tents, with bed and breakfast options nearby.

And just like the instrument itself, attending the festival shouldn’t cost a lot.

“Our aim from the start was to keep all costs to an absolute minimum,” says Lynne.

“Tickets for the entire festival are just $30 and that covers concerts and all workshops by some of the top names in ukulele music, from Australia and overseas.

“And if you can’t be there for all three days of the

SCUM for short,” says Lynne.

“We have all ages, but many of our members are seniors. They’ve often joined while learning ukulele at University of the Third Age classes here on the Sunshine Coast.

“And for people who might want to learn, there’ll be lots of ukuleles for sale at the festival, some for very modest prices. “Unlike, say, the violin, it’s a very easy instrument to start learning to play. And most ukes are even more portable than a fiddle!”
