Nuns on the run in Coolum!!

Photo courtesy David Coleman I suppose you’re wondering what nuns do while they’re on holidays? Well the Little Sisters of Hoboken, on vacation from the US, went on an adventure throughout Coolum recently, turning heads and drawing the attention of the locals.

Whilst many of the faithful spend Sunday morning in church, these nuns were pictured stopping traffic in Birtwill Street, or did they think they were on Abbey Road? It’s becoming a bit of a habit of these nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken nunnery. But really, they’re preparing to parade their talents in Coolum Theatre Players’ production of “Nunsense” in November. Following the sudden death of 52 of the sisterhood who succumbed to botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia, Child of God, the five survivors stage a variety show to raise funds so that the last four of the dearly departed can be buried.

The score pulses with merriment and an unabashed desire to make you laugh, with songs and spontaneous comic interludes paced at break-neck speed, proving conclusively that nun rhymes with fun!

David Williams, in his first time directing for Coolum Theatre Players, is thoroughly enjoying working with this cast, bringing their characters to his expectations for Coolum audiences.

There will be six performances between Friday 28th November and Sunday 7th December and ticket prices are Members $22, Adults $28, Concession $25 and Under 12 $15.

Nunsense will be performed at Coolum Civic Centre, Park Street, Coolum.

Seating will be cabaret style and you are encouraged to bring your own nibbles and drinks.

community news Open Day for Shay at Nambour Museum VISIT the Nambour Museum on 29 November when it discloses the answer to the question –”What happened to the Shay cane locomotive?”

President Clive Plater said all will be revealed at an open day at the museum at 18 Mitchell Street, from 9am-3pm, when the gleaming, newly preserved Shay will be presented to the public. An official unveiling will be performed by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson @ 10am.

“On this occasion, the museum will acknowledge its three-year partnership agreement with the Sunshine Coast Council to preserve the iconic loco,” museum president Clive Plater said.

The Sunshine Coast Council provided funds from the Heritage Levy while the Nambour Museum provided labour and project management, the Shay locomotive is a community asset owned by the Council.

Mr Plater and three or four other equally dedicated volunteers spent the past three years on the Shay’s preservation.

“We have provided 1000s of hours towards the preservation” Mr Plater said. The work included making new parts, a full repaint and much tender loving

care has been applied to make seized parts move again. “Many people have wondered what happened to the Shay after the mill closed in 2003. Those interested in Nambour’s bygone sugar industry as well as visitors to the town speculated because they had remembered

the Shay on display in various locations around the mill and its environs following its retirement in 1960.

“Before the Shay came to the museum it was in storage at the Railways Workshop Museum at Ipswich. When council accepted the museum’s proposal it was returned to be near its old

stamping grounds, for preservation and display. “Upon completion of the Shay’s preservation its history will be told on adjacent information boards.”

Admission to the open day is $4, refreshments available for purchase and a raffle will be drawn. Phone 5441 2083 for more information.

A Brisbane phenomenon?

THIS photo was taken along the banks of the Brisbane River in the heart of the State’s capital.

In case you’re scratching your head in wonderment, no, it’s not trick photography.

The scene was actually inside the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), which is set on the banks of the Brisbane River.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to view the dramatic Cai Guo-Qiang Falling Back to Earth exhibit will know that this installation, called Heritage 2013, was made up of 99 replica animals from around the world, gathered together to drink from a single pristine waterhole.

Chinese-born artist Cai Guo-Qiang (pronounced tsai gwo-chang) based the work on an image that came to his mind after visiting North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane. Another work included in the exhibition was titled Head On and was made up of 99 replica wolves hurling themselves through the

air only to hit a glass wall before returning to the beginning to start the journey again.

Although the exhibition

has now finished, further details and explanations can be obtained by Googling the artist or exhibit name.

community news Retirees set to boost demand for cheaper housing in parks AUSTRALIA’S expanding ranks of retirees, faced with skyrocketing house prices and inadequate savings, are set to boost demand for cheaper manufactured homes by as much as 41%, according to commercial retail adviser Colliers International UK. Investors are responding to the growth of this emerging market, with many seniors living property groups acquiring existing housing parks and sites to convert, and finance companies including GE Capital ready to start lending for the projects.

number could surge to 108,118 if demand increases at a ‘moderate level’, as has happened in more mature overseas markets. Unlike in the US, where trailer parks typically provide housing for low-income residents, in Australia they have historically been used as tourist accommodations.

The Australian manufactured home parks often include amenities such as pools, recreation halls and barbeque areas, and many cabins have porches and even small gardens.

The lack of mortgage financing for them in Australia also means that they’re restricted to retirees who are selling their homes and can pay cash.

jobs of 21,000 workers hanging in the balance.

“The Federal Government’s proposal to slash the RET is a clear broken promise that would result in a reduction of the future target by more than 60 per cent, decimating the renewable energy industry and risking the $10 billion worth of investment already made in good faith under the policy,” Mr Thornton said.

“The renewable energy sector is completely frozen until this can be resolved.

The RET review started at the beginning of the year, and every week that goes by puts more of the 21,000 direct jobs in the renewable energy industry at greater risk.”

Mr Thornton said Australia was effectively closed for business as far as renewable energy is concerned, as major Australian and international investors face a massive change in the policy, after they had already made $10 billion worth of investment based on the

Government’s long standing commitment to the current scheme.

“Many of the world’s major economies, such as the United States, China, Germany and Britain, are leaving Australia behind on renewable energy investment,” he said.

“We need to resolve these negotiations while we still have a skilled and capable industry left to build renewable energy projects here. Keppel Prince Engineering, which locally manufactures wind towers for wind farms using Australian steel, announced last month it would lay off 100 staff as orders had dried up. This is just a taste of what is to come if we can’t resolve the current situation quickly.

“It’s critical that the government resolves the current impasse as quickly as possible to give the thousands of businesses and tens of thousands workers in the industry a clear future.”

community news Democracy - the Noosa way

NOOSA Council is set to become a Queensland and national leader in sharing decision-making with its community.

A Noosa Community Jury of 24 randomly selected citizens will be used to consider certain complex and weighty local issues. Council could either ask for a recommendation, or in some circumstances Council may agree beforehand to implement the jury’s decision.

Mayor Noel Playford says the Community Jury will not take over the Councillors’ role, but will complement their work when everyday citizens, given time and access to all the information they need, in independently facilitated forums, can make an informed decision that earns community trust.

A citizens’ jury statistically reflecting the whole community will be randomly selected by an independent agency, not by the Council.

“These are the vital ingredients” Mr Playford said, “random selection, time and access to information and facilitated forums, independent of the Council.” The Mayor described the jury as “innovative, genuine democracy”.

“In the de-amalgamation battle, our community was not just fighting for the return of their council, but also for a bigger say in local decision-making.”

The new democratic structure in Noosa will be organised in partnership with

the newDemocracy Foundation, a respected, national research foundation made up of former leading politicians and academic experts in the field.

Executive Director of the new Democracy Foundation Iain Walker says the jury concept has been successful overseas, and in trials around the country with local and state governments, where they’ve earned strong community support. “We think people have more trust in public decisions when they see more everyday people involved - the same way we trust the criminal jury” Mr Walker said.

Mr Walker praised the Noosa decision as “a first for Queensland, and of national importance because it brings the practical and trusted democracy of the jury system inside the local decisionmaking process to a greater degree than anyone has previously attempted.”

Mayor Playford said issues that best fit the model of a community jury are complex ones that need time to sift through competing arguments. “The future of waste management in Noosa Shire is one that could fit the bill, and perhaps the contentious issue of responsibility for houseboat hulks left to pollute our river.”

“We could see both of these issues tackled by a Noosa Community Jury during 2015.”

Australian men now likely to live past 80

NEW data shows Australia is one of only four countries where both sexes have a life expectancy of 80 years or more. The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveal that an Australian male born now could expect to live to 80 and a female could expect to live to 84.3 years.

“We’re now among a very rare group of countries,” said ABS director of demography, Denise Carlton.

“The others are Switzerland, Japan and Iceland - where both men and women have a life expectancy of over 80 years.

“Australian women pushed past the 80 year mark back in 1990, so it’s taken

men nearly a quarter century to catch up.

“It’s worth considering that 80 years is an expectation from birth, and statistically, the older you get, the more likely it is that you’ll live to an even older age.”

Carlton said that a man who is now 50 could expect to live to 82, a 65 year old to 84, and a man who is 85 this year could look forward to a 91st birthday.

In 2013, for both males and females, the Australian Capital Territory had the highest life expectancy, while the Northern Territory had the lowest.

Doubled risk of dementia for 1 in 5 with diabetes ALZHEIMER’S Australia Vic launched a Dementia and Diabetes Toolkit on World Diabetes Day to support the estimated one in five older Australians with diabetes who have an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment or dementia. Around 280 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes each day with population studies suggesting people with type 2 diabetes, on average, have double the risk of developing dementia compared with people who do not have the condition.

Professor Nicola Lautenschlager, Professor of Psychiatry of Old Age at the University of Melbourne, who contributed to the development of the toolkit, said we know that people who have diabetes and dementia often have more difficulties man-

aging daily diabetes tasks, such as measuring blood glucose levels, injecting insulin and preparing meals, which unless managed effectively, may lead to an increased risk of diabetic complications.

“The toolkit addresses the challenges and impact dementia has on diabetes management and provides tips and strategies on how people living with diabetes can reduce their risk of developing dementia,” Professor Lautenschlager said.

Dr David Sykes, General Manager Learning and Development at Alzheimer’s Australia Vic said acknowledgment, awareness and understanding of dementia and diabetes, and the link between the two, is imperative in achieving better health outcomes for people

living with the conditions.

“Ultimately what we have achieved with the Dementia and Diabetes Toolkit is the ability for families, carers and friends to best support people living with dementia and diabetes in realising better health outcomes. “The toolkit has achieved this by presenting a range of resources addressing the challenges as-

sociated with both conditions, and the measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing dementia for those currently living with diabetes,” Dr Sykes said.

The Dementia and Diabetes Toolkit contains information on understanding dementia and diabetes, how to support someone living with these condi-

community news Funeral bond decision will help lay cost fears to rest SENIORS have welcomed a landmark court case awarding the full cost of a funeral service to the family of a woman who took out a funeral bond more than 60 years ago. The decision by Beenleigh Magistrate Joan White in Queensland could set a major precedent and help allay any fears of other

people who believed that their funeral costs had already been taken care of, said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. “People need the reassurance that their loved ones will not face extra costs - which can amount to thousands of dollars - at a time when they are coping with the stress of bereavement,”

O’Neill said. “If funeral companies issue funeral bonds which people are paying into in good faith, then the companies will have to honour them.

“This decision will come as a relief to thousands of older Australians and their families.” The court decision was handed down after Gold Coast couple Gavin and Fiona

Turner refused to pay a bill for $7,195 for a 2012 funeral for Gavin’s mother Beryl.

The Turners said the cost of the funeral had already been covered through a prepaid agreement Beryl had started with Alex Gow Funerals in 1948.

The company sued Mr and Mrs Turner on the

grounds that the £25 paid to the company between 1948 and 1980 was not enough for even the most basic of funeral services today. Alex Gow Funerals offered the family a $390 discount but Beenleigh Magistrate Joan White found the decades-old agreement should be honoured.

O’Neill said that around

19,000 other Queenslanders had reportedly signed up to the same agreement and they would rightly expect their funeral bonds would be honoured or if they had already paid for a funeral, that they may receive some recompense.

“People have a right to expect they will get what

a funeral company has been promoting,” he said. “The issue has been around for some years now, so perhaps it is time for the corporate watchdog ASIC to take a closer look at regulations governing the funeral industry and the products it offers.”

THE Buderim War Memorial Community Association are spreading the message of peace and goodwill as they gear up for the annual Buderim Community Christmas Carols. The Carols, proudly sponsored again this year by the Buderim Bendigo Community Bank, will be a great opportunity for everyone in the community to come together and celebrate the festive season on Saturday 13th December at the Buderim Mountain State School Oval from 6.30pm.

The line up this year will include Buderim’s own opera star Natalie Peluso, the Buderim Youth Theatre of Excellence (BYTES) and the Buderim Male Choir, in their 40th Anniversary year. There will of course be a visit from Santa as well as a sausage sizzle and great community sing along.

BWMCA Carols organiser Andrew Butterworth said 2014 had been one of uncertainty internationally and so it was great for the local community to come together and celebrate peace and goodwill to all.

community news Meetings held to establish new political party QUEENSLAND’S mature-age and senior citizens, the disabled, and the disadvantaged - including selffunded and pensioner retirees - may soon find a new voice to air their grievances, publicly, to Governments.

Meetings have recently been held to establish the Mature Age Party (MAP) which aims to give all matureage groups a stronger voice, and a stronger say, in State and Commonwealth policies and decision-making.

Depending on public response and support, that could include the endorsement of MAP candidates in

the next State and Federal elections, and it is planned to hold formal launches before Christmas.

M.A.P. would not be aligned with any political party (State or Federal) but would liaise with and co-operate with all parties who supported its thrust for a “fairgo” for all mature-age electors, retirees, veterans, their dependants and their families.

A small group of residents in a local retirement village have devised a simple yet effective way of checking on their neighbour’s wellbeing.

It puts a whole new slant on Neighbour(hood) Watch.

The three women each put a flag or a marker in their window every morn-

ing, visible from their neighbour’s house, as a signal that all is well with them. To date they haven’t needed help but it gives them a comfortable sense of security. One of the women also keeps her phone on a low table.

Although she has a call button she says if she fell she could not reach it, but if she could crawl to the phone she could call for help.

community news Jack celebrates 90 years

LONG time Nambour resident Jack Tallon celebrated his 90th birthday last Friday with 45 family and friends.

Jack attended Yandina State School and then Nambour High. He had the honour of being the oldest past student and was delighted to cut the cake during the recent Centenary Celebrations at Yandina State School.

He completed an apprenticeship at the Moreton Mill and then worked for 40 years with City Electric Light (Energex) Jack has always been a

keen sportsman and excelled at most sports. Jack and brother Bop joined the Mooloolaba Lifesaving Club in 1942. Jack’s claim to fame is that he twice holed in one at the Nambour Golf Club.

Jack was a member of APEX and after retirement he was an active member of Probus. He was proud to be awarded Life Mem-

bership at Nambour Probus. Jack and Joan are weekly volunteers at Sundale Nursing Home and have done so for

many years. Jack married Yandina girl Joan Pascoe and they have had 67 happy years together.

They have two children

Bruce and Pam. They both agree that their dad has been a wonderful father, husband and a great community man.

Support to get older Australians working

SUNSHINE Coast businesses now have the opportunity to receive assistance from the Australian Government if they employ older Australians.

Member for Fisher Mal Brough said that the Restart Wage Subsidy is an initiative that will help people aged 50 or older get a job.

“As part of my recently launched Operation Bounce Back campaign I am aiming to raise awareness of the Federal Government’s employment initiatives including Restart,” Mr Brough said.

“We know two things.

We know that there are clear benefits of hiring and keeping older workers due to their maturity and

experience. However we also know that older workers can remain unemployed for long periods if they lose their job.

“It’s important that we as a nation do not let middleaged people drift into unemployment for a decade or more before retirement when they still have a significant contribution to make.

“The Federal Government’s Restart program aims to help to address the barriers older Australians face when looking for a job by more than tripling the previous incentive announced by the Government for employers to hire matureage workers,” Mr Brough said.

Under Restart, eligible employers will receive an initial $3000 if they hire a fulltime matureage job seeker who has been unemployed and on income support for six months — including the age or disability support pension — and employ that person for at least six months. Once that job seeker has been working for the same employer for 12 months, the employer will receive another payment of $3000. The employer will then receive a further $2000 once the same job seeker has been with them for 18 months and another $2000 at two years. It is available on a pro rata basis where employers take on parttime

workers for a minimum of 15 hours per week.

“I encourage all Sunshine Coast employers to look closely at Restart and see how they can take advantage of this generous incentive,” Mr Brough said.

Restart has been allocated $524.8 million over four years and could benefit up to 32,000 mature aged job seekers each year.

Empty bird baths at least once a week and wipe the surface to dislodge eggs; fill pot plant saucers with sand or discard the bases; clean and refill pet drinking water daily; remove any items from the garden that may hold water including tyres, buckets and children’s toys; clean house gutters regularly and check tarpaulins covering boats, pools etc. to ensure that no water is collecting.

community news Memories in train for Bob WHEN the heritage steam train runs the leg from Bundaberg to Landsborough on February 25 there will be no happier passenger aboard than Bob Bingham, of Caloundra.

Between January 15 and February 25 next year Queensland Rail will run steam train journeys be-

tween Brisbane and Cairns to celebrate 150 years of continuous operation. The train will stop at many towns and cities along the coastal route and will use heritage stations where possible; passengers can choose to travel a shorter section if they wish.

Bob Bingham, 70, a

former train fireman, now retired, bought his ticket months ago.

Bob will board the Tilt Train at Landsborough on February 24, get off at Bundaberg where he will stay overnight and catch the steam train for the return journey to Landsborough on February 25. The trip will be six

The mighty Beyer Garratt BB18¼ steam locomotive 1079 from Queensland Rail’s Heritage Fleet, normally stationed at Ipswich rail museum, will be the main locomotive used to haul historic wooden carriages to round out the experience; BB18 1/4 1089 may be used as a backup.

Both engines were retained by Queensland Rail for its Heritage Fleet and are often used on mainline tours.

Bob hopes the loco on the return trip is 1079 because he is sure he has cleaned that engine at some time, using tallow and lots of elbow grease.

Speaking in his living room, where model trains and his “bucket list” of famous train journeys on CD are a reminder of his passion for trains, Bob recalled his time as a trainee engineman.

“I starting working at Mayne. That was in the early ‘60s and I was about 17,” he said.

“I was a call boy, that meant if a driver was off sick I had to ride a pushbike to wake the fill-

in driver. “When you joined the railways as a trainee engineman you started from the ground up, you were a call boy and a trainee, you did both.

“One time I had to go to Sandgate and I didn’t want to ride all the way back so I waited for the train going back and put my bike in the guard van and caught the train back to base.

“And once when I was a call boy at Toowong I took my foot off the (bike) pedal and headed over the handlebars, but I wasn’t hurt because I landed on the grass.”

“When I worked at Mayne we were allotted five or six engines each; we had to start from scratch and fire them up and keep them going until the crew came on duty.”

And they had to clean the engines - with tallow, softened on the hot boiler.

He used to live at Wynnum and a few times returning from work (after starting at midnight and working the night shift) he was so tired he fell asleep and ended up at the terminus at Lota. Then he had to wait for the train back to Wynnum.

The trainee enginemen at Mayne were left sometimes to their own devices, but being boys they managed to find ways to deal with the tedium when not busy with their duties.

The train loaded with pineapples for the cannery at Northgate was a favourite victim.

It went right past Mayne

and it was an easy matter to put a “stopper” on the track so that when the train pulled up some pineapples happened to fall off (with a bit of assistance) into their waiting hands.

The boys sometimes spilt some coal on the floor and the cleaner, who obviously thought they were careless, reported them to the boss.

This cleaner had a big broom so one of the boys found a six inch nail and nailed the broom to the floor. Of course they were reprimanded but Bob still has a laugh over the incident. After Mayne he was transferred to the Gabba yards.

One day they got a letter from the nearby Mater Hospital asking them not to blow off steam because the loud whistle disturbed a well-known dignitary who was a patient at the time.

His next posting was to

Yeerongpilly, which was with NSW railways. They had a steam engine there that three or four of the boys had to fill up using only shovels. That’s a serious amount of coal.

Being a fireman meant gaining a sound knowledge of engines and how they worked, and how the Westinghouse brakes worked.

To qualify as a fireman Bob had to travel to Broadmeadows in NSW to take the exam.

He had no sleeper so he slept on the luggage rack with his bag as a pillow and blanket; he recalls it as not the most comfortable trip he’s ever had.

He passed the exam but had to do practical work on a steam engine to get his ticket, which turned out to be a Beyer Garratt.

It was a goods train.

After qualifying he used to take the NSW diesel passenger train from South Brisbane to South Grafton.

Bob eventually gave the railways away.

He says if he had stayed he would have been a retired engine driver by now. But he will be reliving history on February 25 even if the fare has gone up in 50 or so years.

“I remember going to Cairns on a steam engine when first class return was one pound 17 shillings and sixpence. It took two days and two nights.

“I had a sleeper. You got a pass when you worked for the railways,” he said.

Labor walks away from RET

THE Labor Party has walked away from playing any constructive role in putting the Australian renewable energy industry on a long-term sustainable footing.

The Government approached negotiations with the Opposition in good faith, making clear our 4 key principles for support of the Renewable Energy Target: The RET should represent a real 20 per cent of energy generation, Support for household solar systems should not be changed, Pressure on energy intensive trade exposed sectors should be reduced, which will provide additional support for Australian jobs, The renewable sector should have greater clarity by removing the need for a target review every two years.

Since the 20 per cent RET deal was struck in 2009 the energy market has changed dramatically. Australia’s total demand for electricity is falling and what was intended to be a 20% target is now tracking towards 27% by 2020. The RET is not operating as intended and as many in the renewable sector privately acknowledge, the target is neither sustainable nor achievable. The Government has never proposed any changes to affect household solar or the 14,000 jobs in the small scale solar industry. The Government also believes pressure on energy intensive trade exposed sectors should be reduced to provide additional support for Australian jobs.

Under the Government’s proposal taken to the table with the Labor Party, there would be a doubling of new large-scale and new small-scale renewable energy production under the RET between now and 2020. The Government hopes the Labor Party will reconsider its decision to destabilise the renewable energy sector by walking away from the talks.

Regardless of the Labor Party’s decision the Coalition Government will continue to work to ensure an amended Renewable Energy Target plays a sustainable role in Australia’s energy mix. WOW! We have been busy with two exciting events at Woombye Bowls Club recently.

Our Melbourne Cup Fun Day was very successful again with lots of delicious food, including appetisers, champagne and prawns (not to mention the yummy pavlova and cheesecake desserts), as well as a fashion parade and fun hobby horse races.

Thank you to those who put in an extra effort and dressed up for the “Fashion” awards!

Woombye Op Shop was very thankful for the money raised from the sales of modelled clothes and the $5.00 donation from each entry ticket on the day. Many thanks to Lena and Di for another great function. We are wondering what you are going to include for the Cup in 2015!!! $10,000 was up for grabs at our annual “Woombye 10,000” in a 3 day event, supported by bowls clubs from far and wide.

The standard of bowls was very impressive, as was the sportsmanship and friendship displayed.

Congratulations to all bowlers who competed.

Overall winners of the $4,000 first prize was a combined team from Coolum, Kawana and Brisbane, skippered by Darren Maddrell. Well done. Once again, Di Parker and her helpers fed the 80 ravenous bowlers with breakfasts, lunches and dinners over the 3 day event. Di always likes bowlers to enjoy their food and not go home hungry!

Thanks, Di! There were also many favourable comments complimenting our hardworking greenkeepers, who prepared very true greens, again. Well done, boys.

by Frank Mohr who has a few less hairs on his head, after working with numbers and results all weekend.

Council green waste bins for rural towns NOOSA Council is expanding the garden waste collection service to rural townships to counter the problem of green waste- lawn clippings, leaves, branches, twigs, weeds and palm fronds- going to landfill. Rural residents are being offered the service for a more environmentally-friendly solution to managing their garden waste. This garden waste collection is an optional service. These lime-green lidded waste bins are collected from homes every fortnight on the alternative week to the yellow lidded recycling bin. Currently, most Noosa residents either fill their household rubbish bins with green waste which goes to landfill, or take their green waste to the tip in a trailer themselves. Neither method is satisfactory. Green waste in landfill produces greenhouse gas emissions and takes up landfill space. Trips to the tip are expensive - petrol, tip disposal fees, trailer use and registration costs, and the cost of the time taken. The green waste bins cost $65 per annum for a fortnightly collection. Once ordered from Council, a new green waste bin will be delivered in approximately 4 weeks’ time. The green waste collected by council is shredded, aged, mulched and made available to residents, free of charge, for use as garden mulch. Over 3,000 coastal residents already use the garden waste service, saving money and creating time for other activities. The landfill site benefits through reduced organic load and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Four letters that could save your life LOCAL community members are being urged to remember four simple letters as part of a push to save lives. Stroke is one of Australia’s most lethal killers and needs urgent medical attention but most people don’t know what a stroke looks like.

The letters F.A.S.T are an acronym for the signs of stroke and what to do about it.

National Stroke Foundation CEO Dr Erin Lalor said, “The symptoms associated with stroke can often be confused with fatigue. These include weakness in the arms, slurred speech or trouble standing. “Unfortunately, most people don’t know this and sadly many people go and have a nap

instead of calling an ambulance – which is the worst thing you can do because lying down and going to sleep can prove fatal.” Stroke is the second biggest killer of Australians and more than 50,000 strokes happen every year in this country – that’s 1000 strokes a week. To help fight this terrible condition, the National Stroke Foundation is launching the 2014 FAST campaign this month after receiving a $2million boost in funding from the Federal Government to promote awareness of stroke and stroke prevention.

“Stroke can happen to anyone at any age, so it’s vitally important that everyone knows the signs and knows how important it is to call an ambulance immediately. When you have a stroke, parts of your brain begin to die, so time saved is brain saved,” Dr Lalor said.

“The FAST acronym saves lives by helping people remember the signs.”

Face – has their mouth drooped?

Arms – can they raise both of their arms above their head?

Speech – is their speech slurred? Can they understand what you’re saying?

Time – Call triple zero (000) immediately. Do not delay.

A person is likely to show at least one of these signs when they are having a stroke. Many people don’t get to hospital in time due to not knowing the signs of stroke.

“A stroke starves the brain of oxygen by blocking the flow of blood,” Dr Lalor said.

“Without oxygen, the stroke-affected part of the brain starts to die – that’s why immediate treatment is so important. By using the FAST acronym you have the ability to save a life or save a person from a life of severe disability.”

The National Stroke Foundation is encouraging families, workplaces, hospitals, schools and community groups to get on board by learning the FAST message to help save lives. ON 17th October in the BliBli Uniting Church Hall, some members of BliBli on Maroochy Historical Society attended a Pink Morning Tea hosted by the BliBli CWA, to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.Guests wore varied shades of pink. Two cancer survivors spoke to a receptive audience about their individual struggles, and the importance of a positive attitude towards recovery. The last BliBli

CWA function we attended was their 80th Birthday Celebration in the Community Hall early in 2010, when Marie Elliott MBE received a standing ovation. Over the years the CWA has been a powerful force within the community, unsung heroes who have provided support for others, and raised funds to achieve worthwhile goals.

Although the BliBli on Maroochy Historical Society’s primary aim is to

collect and record the life and times of local pioneers and early settlers, we also record contemporary local events and the achievements of community groups like the CWA. As far back as September 1931, the Nambour Chronicle reported that a dance was arranged by the BliBli CWA for the benefit of the Maroochydore Life Saving Club, and £7/7/- was raised. In January 1951 the QCWA opened a hostel in

Nambour to cater for students attending the Nambour Primary School, Technical College, High School and Rural School.

Recently they helped raise money for an oncology unit in Nambour Hospital.

Though there are only a handful of ladies in the group today, their sterling efforts make an impact on wider rural and overseas communities than in those early days.

President Colin Sims making presentations to Frank and Margaret Kenna for their 60th wedding anniversary

THE October meeting of the club was a happy occasion for Frank and Margaret Kenna as it was their 60th wedding anniversary, and presentations were made to them by President Colin Simms. The President also inducted new members Beryl Horsfall and Ian Hay. Beryl is the first lady full member of the club. Ian Hay gave a very interesting new members spot. He served his apprenticeship as a fitter and turner in England. Not being happy with working in a workshop he joined the merchant navy, eventually reaching the rank of chief engineer. During the early days much of his time was spent working between the West African Congo area and England.

Afterwards he worked for the New Zealand Shipping Co. in 1954 he was in Freemantle when Queen Elizabeth visited. He was on the first ship to carry butter from Australia to Odessa in Russia in the early 1950s. While his ship was in Russia their movements ashore were very restricted due to the Cold War. The ship was guarded by Russian troops with automatic weapons and any visits ashore were under the supervision of a guide. After marriage Ian went to work for the Cunard Line working into and out of Mediterranean ports. Ian eventually went to work as chief engineer for a large English newspaper company and finally to Australia where he continued to work in the newspaper industry. The Guest Speaker was Army Reserve Chaplain Captain James Hall. James gave a very interesting insight into the work a chaplain does in today’s defence force. He trains with the troops and has to have a very high standard of fitness. There is much more to the job than just holding church services. The welfare of service personnel in combat areas and ongoing contact with incapacitated personnel are a chaplain’s responsibility. The chaplain is sometimes required to be the “moral compass” of those in command. While chaplains are non-combatants they have the option of carrying a side arm for personal protection in certain situations. Their responsibilities are vastly different to those of the chaplains many of us were familiar with in our service lives.

Buderim Men’s Shed calls for votes to win Medibank community grant SUNSHINE Coast residents are being urged to get behind the Buderim Men’s Shed and vote for their local wellbeing project/ program which has made the shortlist to win a 2015 Medibank Community Grant. The number of on-line votes received will decide the winner.

The local program is one of five community groups in Queensland shortlisted to share in available grants worth $600,000 nationally.

Medibank Community Grants invited not-forprofit groups to apply for funding for initia-

tives they believe will make their community a healthier place to be.

Shortlisted projects were chosen on the criteria they would help encourage healthy eating, physical activity and greater community connectedness, promoting health and wellbeing.

The Buderim Men’s Shed project aims to help locals, over the age of 50, to connect with similar aged individuals with shared interests to build supportive relationships, gain knowledge and improve their health. The

WHAT if you missed your granddaughter’s first word, or the gist of a speech by your son at his wedding? Thousands of Australians get by on piecing together conversations and missing important moments that result in lasting emotional impact, research by Australian Hearing has revealed.

The research has identified more than 87 per cent of Australians with hearing loss struggle to follow conversations and half of all sufferers (48%) and their loved ones (53%) believe hearing loss reduces the quality of communication by limiting the sharing of thoughts and feelings in conversation. Principal Audiologist at Australian Hearing, Janette Thorburn, said this could compromise quality of life and relationships for the sufferer.

“Simple things we take for granted like chatting with grandchildren or partaking in conversations can be challenging for people suffering with hearing loss. It’s as if they never get to fully experience these moments, often missing words and sentiment” said Ms Thorburn.

However, for the majority of untreated sufferers it is a burden often experienced unnecessarily - many people have hearing loss which can be managed effectively with proper diagnosis and treatment. Ms Thorburn said “people have a natural inclination to put up with or just ignore their hearing difficulties rather than take action.” The research found only 59 per cent of untreated sufferers had ever had a hearing test and of those who had had been formally tested, an average of 12.2 years had passed since their last test. “People who seek help earlier on are much more likely to get more benefit from them than those who put up with hearing loss for years before seeking help” said Ms Thorburn.

community news Glasshouse Country VIEW Club “The Hat Day” ABOUT 40 members with their guests enjoyed the Melbourne Cup luncheon at Club Glasshouse and had a wonderful day. Our first mission of the day was to choose our morning tea before being creative and making our own hats. Some people came up with some great ideas. Out of our group Debbie Mooney created our “Best Hat” and Lyn Moss was judged as “The Best Dressed”. After all of this we had a delicious lunch and watched the running of the Melbourne Cup to see if we were winners. Our thanks go to the staff of Club Glasshouse for making this an enjoyable day.

The link between type 2 diabetes and incontinence ONE of the lesser understood consequences of type 2 diabetes is its potential to exacerbate bladder and bowel control problems.

Constipation: Constipation, which affects nearly 60 per cent of people with diabetes, increases the risk of urinary incontinence. This is because an enlarged bowel compresses the bladder and reduces its holding capacity, thereby risking accidental leakage.

High blood sugar levels: If blood sugar levels are poorly controlled, the body will try to remove the excess blood sugars by producing more urine and a fuller bladder, which can also lead to accidental leakage.

Obesity: Being overweight puts people at higher risk of both type 2 diabetes and incontinence. Overweight is a major contributor to bladder and bowel control, because the excess strain on the pelvic floor can weaken the pelvic floor muscles.

Nerve damage: Poorly controlled or long-term type 2 diabetes can cause damage to nerves, which can lead to a loss in sensation about whether or not to pee, or if the

bladder’s full or empty, which can increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Reduced immunity: Diabetes also interferes with the immune system, putting sufferers at greater risk of infection and UTIs. Medications: Medications such as metformin, acarbose and repaglinide can cause diarrhoea.

Five steps for good bladder and bowel health: 1. Eat well and include at least 30 g of fibre daily.

2. Drink about 1.5 -2 litres of fluid daily, limiting caffeine and fizzy drinks.

3. Exercise regularly.

4. Keep your pelvic floor toned.

5. WOMEN in the Cooroy area are being urged to take advantage of free breast cancer screening at Queensland Health’s mobile service which will be located the Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, 50 Maple Street, Cooroy from 2 - 17 December 2014.

BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Deb Zammit said breast cancer is still one of the most common cancers experienced by Australian women with about 1 in 8 Queensland women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85.

“As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease is to detect breast cancer as early as possible,” Ms Zammit said. Regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early –

well before a women or her doctor can feel anything.

“Although the lead up to Christmas is a busy time, it is vital that all women heed messages about the importance of having a regular breast screen,” Ms Zammit said. All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 5074 years are particularly encouraged to attend.

There is no need for women to put off having a breastscreen any longer. It’s quick, simple, convenient, free and a doctor’s referral is not required. Some early morning, late afternoon and Saturday appointments are available.

Getting Older I FEEL like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour but, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

THE guest speaker at the October meeting of the Currimundi Combined Probus Club was Wiebe ter Bals from the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and his topic was the Halls Creek proposed development. He conveyed to the audience of 95 members and guests what the developers wanted to do and the likely impacts on the area if it went ahead. He also put forward alternatives that were more practical and environmentally friendly. The

Sunshine Coast Regional Council is opposed to the development but the State government wants the development to proceed and it has the over-riding authority to let the project go ahead.

Another highlight of the meeting was the induction of eight new members and associates namely Maggie and Jim Blackie, Jude Collyns, Val Doyle, Melanie Salm, Barbara Shackleton, Denise Stephens and Trish Meaney, bringing total membership to 141.

disease. While commonly thought to be a man’s disease, women with sleep apnea tend to experience worse health status than men, use more psychoactive drugs as well as sedatives to sleep, and have higher healthcare costs.

Women with sleep apnea are also at increased risk of long-term, serious health conditions that can reduce their quality of life, such as cardiovascular disease, despite sleep therapy solutions potentially reducing the risk of cardiovascular. Even though one in two women aged 20-70 years are thought to be living with the condition,7 evidence suggests women are often under diagnosed, or diagnosed with other conditions, such as depression, despite complaining to their doctor of a lack of energy, constant tiredness and morning headaches.

In fact, a recent online poll of 1000 Australians found that women were more likely to go to a doctor about their sleep than men (24 per cent versus 20 per cent), however they were less likely to then be referred to a sleep study (8

per cent versus 15 per cent). “There appears to be two issues at play when it comes to women being accurately diagnosed with sleep apnea,” said Professor David Hillman, Chair, Sleep Health Foundation and Director of the West Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute, Perth.

“Firstly, when women speak to their doctor they often don’t mention that they snore which is a key indicator for sleep apnea.

Rather, they complain of less classic symptoms such as depression or restless legs that don’t trigger suspicions of sleep apnea for doctors.”

“Furthermore, evidence also suggests women may consider snoring “unladylike” and therefore not mention it to their doctor while also being more likely to attend medical appointments on their own, and so information

from a partner on snoring, which may assist in a diagnosis, is not be as readily available as it is for men,” explains Professor Hillman. The survey found that three in 10 women (28 per cent) reported they had been told by their partner that they snore but they either didn’t believe them or felt embarrassed so did nothing. Celebrate the Gift of Knowing THE Christmas season is upon us again. For some people it seems to have become all about the cost of the gifts, putting on a massive spread of food and completely buying into the commercial hype without much thought given to what it actually means to them on an individual level.

For the people on their end journey, when this is potentially their last Christmas, the approach is vastly different.

This can still be the season of gifts, it’s just about different sorts of gifts.

Knowing that you or a loved one is on their end journey is a beautiful gift, denied to many. It provides an opportunity for precious memories to be created, both for the person on their end journey and their loved ones. It provides an opportunity for the words that need to be spoken and for the acts to be undertaken. We knew that my Dad’s last Christmas was going to be his last

one – he was already in a hospice. So we took Christmas to him, a few weeks early. We had a fabulous family picnic in the grounds and Dad was even able to come out in a wheelchair and join us for a short while. In many ways it was a normal family gathering with much laughter. Dad died on January 6.

It was similar with my sister and we knew that she was already on borrowed time. She died on February 3.

Precious memories were created, treasured photos we taken and much thought was put into the gifts that were given. This Christmas, don’t exclude those who are on their end journey.

Create celebrations that work within the confines of their journey and create precious memories for all. You will be so thankful later.

Keeping your pets cool in the Summer time!

THE warm weather is upon us and this can prove to be a hazardous time for our pets. Heat stress, flea infestations, tick and snake envenomation to name just a few.

To-day we will discuss heat stress given the recent bout of very hot days we have experienced on the coast. I know most people understand not to leave their pets in the car in hot weather but still people continue to do it.

The inside of an automobile can increase it’s temperature 10 – 15 degrees Celsius in just a few short

minutes EVEN with the windows open. The rule in hot weather is to leave your dogs at home sleeping under a shady tree or stretched out on the cool tiles with plenty of cool water available. Trust me they will thank you for this! Remember to always check the inside of your car before closing the doors if you have left the doors open and unattended for any reason (eg.

Unloading groceries ,etc) – many curious pets will take the opportunity to sneak in when you are not looking to find a comfy

place to sleep, then find themselves locked in an unforgiving furnace.

Dogs and cats do not sweat as we do to cool ourselves, instead they

rely on evaporation from the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose as well as the pads on the paws to cool themselves.

We can help them to cool down using the following methods:Place ice blocks in their drinking water, Freeze an empty plastic drink bottle filled with water & allow your pet to lie on it and

lick the condensation from the surface as it defrosts.

Make gravy flavoured iceblocks for them to lick and chew. Regularly hose them down or spritz the coat with water (a good technique for our feathered friends) or simply wipe down the coat regularly with a wet face washer – this works well for cats. (Remember swimming is exercise and as such can also create heat so prolonged swimming can still lead to heat stress). Use a childs wading pool (plastic clam shell sand pits are ideal) in the shade with shallow water for a dip. Exercise only in the cool of the early morning or later evening and if it is still hot then forget exercise all together for that day.Keep pets in the air

Avoid travelling with pets in cars – even on the backs of utes! Clip the coats of dogs and cats especially those with thick undercoats – a good idea for the tick season as well.

Dogs and cats with shorter noses (eg Pugs, Persians and even Staffies) are unable to dispel heat as well as other breeds as they have less surface area in their mouth & nose. These breeds therefore are more prone to suffering heat stress. Similarly animals with a darker coat colour or animals that are overweight similarly the very young or very old are also more prone. Be aware of the circumstance that may lead to your pet becoming heat stressed and endeavour to make summer as

comfortable as possible for your best friend.

Should you suspect that your pet may have heat stress, It is vital that you seek veterinary assistance immediately. The sooner we can decrease your pet’s core temperature, the better the chance of saving your pet.

THE first official day of Sunshine Coast Council’s Domestic Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Strategy 2014-2020 recently saw 136 pets become microchipped and around half of these also registered. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Council was encouraged to have received this positive response and feedback from pet owners towards the new strategy and its responsible ownership focus.

“At the community launch event we were pleased to see more than 300 people bring their dogs and cats to enjoy a fun morning out, with all pets under control and well behaved,” Cr McKay said.

“Now the owners of 106 dogs and 30 cats can be safe in the knowledge their furry friends will be more easily identified and quickly returned home if they go missing.

“Council officers do what they can to get a lost animal home in the first instance, rather than taking it to the pound however, unfortunately if the animal is not registered or microchipped or their details are not up-to-date we often have to wait for the animal owner to come to us. Our data shows only 19% of the impounded cats and dogs are registered and only 36% are microchipped.”

Cr McKay said the new strategy would act as a tool for promoting and enhancing responsible pet ownership practices, whilst informing the community about Council’s role and future priorities in animal management. By 2031, it is estimated there will be a total 90,000 dogs and 54,000 cats within the Sunshine Coast Council region. The region already boasts a strong cat and dog population which is due to increase to this level in line with urban development and population growth,” she said. “This means there will be growing demand on animal management services and infrastructure. In order to provide a sustainable level of service into the future, and enhance the wellbeing and successful integration of animals and community, the advancement of responsible pet ownership performance is fundamental.

“The strategy endorses the vision of ‘your pet, your responsibility’, signifying that keeping a cat or dog is a considerable and often long-term commitment and responsibility – both socially and economically. Owners are responsible for ensuring their animal is well behaved, does not create a nuisance or endanger others.

Travel for over 50s

The new face of Hong Kong

MANY Australians are familiar with Hong Kong… the alleys and markets of Kowloon and Central, the luxurious [and expensive] hotels, the crush of locals, mainland Chinese and tourists from all corners of the earth, all jostling and hurrying somewhere.

This time we decide to avoid the usual Central/Wanchai area of Hong Kong Island, and all of Kowloon.

Been there, done that.

So guided by local friends and expat survivors we find ourselves booked into a hotel in Causeway Bay and the adjoining Tai Hang area around Victoria Park. It’s only 3 stops on the MTR subway from Central,

yet miles away in feeling.

It’s only a short walk from the crowded Causeway Bay streets to the oasis of Victoria Park where we rest for a while watching the old-timers practising their tai chi moves until out of the blue comes an old man insisting we join in. It’s all good fun, and great exercise as well..

Towards evening we wander across the road from the park to the Tai Hang area. This is even more surprising. Just 5 to 10 years ago, this was a backwater populated by car repair shops, tyre wholesalers, taxi depots and some rather more questionable establishments.

Further back in history, it was a swampy no-go

area in line with the literal meaning of tai hang in Cantonese…”big drain”. Hardly the stuff of tourism brochures and glossy magazines.

Now, it’s a thriving new bar and restaurant precinct where locals congregate, we suspect, to avoid the tourists and the overpriced Central, Wanchai and Kowloon scene. It’s still a work in progress, and we find some irony in the idea of a smart café next to a grotty car workshop….coffee with an oil change. But there’s a huge range of tiny eateries of many types…Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, German, Irish, Italian and even a burger bar. Some of these places are so small that they have

waiting stools streetside because only 10 or so people can fit inside. It’s all very chummy.

Best news of all is that Causeway Bay/Tai Hang now has a raft of new hotels in addition to the ageing Excelsior, Regal and Park Lane.

There are budget digs, 3 star and 4 star lodgings and an interesting “boutique” choice called Lanson Place Hotel. With 194 rooms and suites it doesn’t strictly qualify as a boutique but it’s run along similar lines with a high level of personal service and a typically “European” ambience, including sculpted Murano glass chandeliers and a grand piano in the lounge which doubles as a breakfast room.

and desk, two flat screen TVs, beds provide extreme comfort and the modern bathrooms with rain showers are squeaky clean. And the electric blackout blinds are so effective that we have to make sure the alarm clock is set, otherwise we’d be sleeping all day.

One extraordinary feature of Lanson Place is the smart phone we’ve been given (on loan of course) at check in…to make not only local calls but free calls back to Australia! This is the first time we’ve seen this offered in any hotel, and it’s a trend we hope will continue across the board.

Overnight Camel Safari: Jaisalmer, Rajasthan India AN overnight camel safari Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India. What fun!

One hour by car and 35 km later we were in the desert complete with sand dunes, sparse bushes and small plants. A ‘train’ of 4 camels waited. Let’s go!

Just getting on a fully grown seated camel is awkward. I managed to get half way then the camel tout pushed me from behind to get me into the saddle. The instant I was in the saddle the camel stood up – first its 2 hind legs while I screamed and tried not to fall over its head, then the front legs. All that saved me from falling off was a tiny wooden pommel and the rope stirrups.

“We go!” The camel touts were ready beside us, on foot.

“You first go!” They said to my husband whose camel had already started to gavump into the desert.

The Rajasthan desert has amazing wildlife. We saw deer, cattle, wild camels, many birds and miles of sand dunes. It was February – winter and 10 degrees at night and about 25 by day. Perfect weather for a safari. Camels don’t look so tall until you are sitting on one. My camel looked innocent but was obviously the boss male and quite aggressive. Every now and again he would stop still, flick his head down so I felt I would fall off then he’d rotate his entire neck and look at me while bubbling and gurgling. He’d then poke out his huge pink tongue and give me a slobbery raspberry. I learnt to sit totally still and wait for the finale. If I put both arms over my face with my elbows crossed most of the slime would stick to my jumper and after it dried could be picked off.

I only imagined that I was ever in control of this beast. He was just toying with me and could destroy me if he wanted to!

After an hour I just had to get off and walk. My legs and back were

aching and my right foot had been crushed by the rope stirrup. If I thought getting on was bad then getting off a camel was worse.

Without warning my camel knelt on his front legs leaving me trying to lie back while gripping the pommel in terror. Then he finally folded in his other two legs and sat down fully. To dismount I just leant over and slid off.

I concluded that going on a 3 hour camel ride when you are over 60 is about two and a half hours too long. And as for sleeping in a tiny tent without an airbed to soften the hard sand while listening to four camels make washing machine sounds all night? Well that’s another story!

IN August Go See Touring held the inaugural Convict’s Cup Croquet Tournament on Norfolk Island. Croquet players from around Australia were invited to travel to the island for a week of croquet fun and have fun they did.

The social tournament was a golf croquet match and players were paired ‘randomly’ with novice players being teamed up with those who were more experienced.

In all 64 players participated in the event and a huge congratulations goes out to the winners Gordon Giles from Victoria Point in QLD and Nanette Meredith from Leongatha in VIC. The history of sports on the island goes back to the Second Settlement (1825 – 1856) when sports were played by the military and free settlers on the Kingston Oval.

The field today is home to football and cricket matches and is the oldest pitch in the Southern hemisphere still in use. Norfolk Island doesn’t have any croquet lawns as such so much preparation work was done to the Kingston Oval to make it suitable for the event. Our players came from as far South as Geelong and as far north as Bundaberg and as well as playing croquet our group had time to explore on their own, shop til they dropped and also enjoy BBQ’s, Island Fish Fries, Breakfast Bush Walks and more.

Go See Touring plans to make the Convict’s Cup an annual event and the next tournament is planned for June 2015. Next year players from New Zealand are also invited. There are also plans in place for a week’s touring in New Zealand in November 2015 with the best sites of the South Island being combined with some social croquet activity with some of our Kiwi cousins.

COOROY Library has opened its doors for anyone to try the new and exciting smart table. This great piece of technological brilliance is an interactive tabletop that can download apps and works as a giant tablet. Collections and Programs Co-ordinator Tracey King said the table is already proving popular with the workshops being run using the device and the library is now encouraging individuals and community groups to come in and experience this new technology.

‘People are amazed with the fact that more than one person can ‘touch’ the table at the same time. It’s fantastic to see lots of people sitting together working on the same jigsaw,’ she said.

THE annual Christmas Boat Parade is again being organised by Mooloolaba Yacht Club. There are lots of places to go to watch the Parade – it will start at 6.30pm and will head from the wharf to La Balsa, Kawana, around to Outrigger Park, back past Charles Clarke Reserve and finish at approximately 7.40pm at the Wharf, Mooloolaba.

THE Judy Henzell Sunshine Melodies Concert series will present Kamahl - My Music, My Life.

Celebrate the Christmas Season and final Sunshine Melodies performance for 2014 with My Music, My Life by Kamahl. Kamahl will take to The Events Centre’s stage and tell the story of the music and the people that created him.

Once heard, his voice is unforgettable. A sumptuous, bronzed bass baritone, it melts across melodies, imbuing them with a grandeur that is intimate rather than remote, because Kamahl has that singular ability to make it seem that he is singing to you, and you alone. It can also rise up when called upon, and push you back in your seat with its force-of-nature power.

It seemed more impossible than improbable that Kamahl would become one of the great stars of Australian music – with a reputation reaching around the globe – when he was born Kandiah Kamalesvaran to Tamil Hindu parents in Malaysia. In 1953 he arrived in Adelaide to complete his

schooling after a tormented childhood under Japanese occupation: a lonely black teenager in an alien white country.

But Kamahl was not one to succumb to self-pity.

He began to sing, inspired by other great black artists such as Nat King Cole and Paul Robeson.

His first public performance came in 1958, when, having shortened his name to “Kamal” he was introduced as “Camel”. Thereafter a shrewdly-placed “h” ensured no repeat.

Rupert Murdoch championed the young singer, helping him to avoid deportation under the White Australia policy.

Murdoch also encouraged him to move to Sydney, found him work and accommodated him in the family home for two years while some career momentum was attained.

Kamahl, torn between careers in popular song and opera, was initially signed to Phonogram in 1967 as a classical artist. With typical determination he pushed against the label’s intentions, and soon became a household name

for his interpretations of love songs and ballads on record, in concert and via his regular television appearances.

He advanced his own career by such cheerful gambles as hiring the London Palladium for a oneman show. He would go on to perform in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and give a Royal Command performance before Queen Elizabeth II during the 1982 Commonwealth Games. In 1975 became a household name in Europe thanks to the spectacular hit he had with The Elephant Song. He has now recorded over 30 albums (excluding compilations) containing many numberone hits and earning over 100 gold and platinum records. The longevity of his success has few parallels.

In 2011 he met President Obama and subsequently recorded The Gettysburg Address for his 2012 triple-CD Heart and Soul (ABC). In 2013 he was invited to deliver The Gettysburg Address at Parliament House on the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s original oration.

Nearly half a century on Kamahl is still entertaining and touching people.

THE Sunshine Coast Choral Society will be present J. S. Bach’s ‘Christmas Oratorio” as its final concert for 2014 on Sunday 7th December. Adrian King will conduct the Society, The Choral Society Orchestra and soloists Lauren Lodge-Campbell (Soprano), Shikara Ringdahl (Mezzo), Martin Paroz (Tenor) and Brett Holland (Bass) for this performance.

The ‘green thing’ AT the supermarket checkout, the young cashier suggested to the much older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

The woman apologised and explained, ‘We didn’t have this “green thing” back in my earlier days.’

The young cashier responded, ‘Now it’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.’

It was true. Back then our generation didn’t have the ‘green thing’. We returned milk bottles, lemonade bottles and beer bottles to the shop as a matter of course. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilised and refilled so it could use

the same bottles over and over.

Grocery shops bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we re-used for numerous things, most memorably for wrapping rubbish but, also, as schoolbook covers. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. We then we were able to personalise our books on the brown paper bag covers. Too bad we didn’t do the ‘green thing’ back when.

We walked up stairs because we didn’t have a lift in every supermarket, shop and office building.

We walked to the local shop and didn’t climb into a 300 horsepower machine every time we had to go half-a-mile. But, she was

right. We didn’t do the ‘green thing’ in our day.

We would wash the baby’s terry towel nappies because we didn’t have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 3 kilowatts.

Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.

Kids had hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

We had one radio or TV in the house; not a TV in every room, and the TV had a small screen the size of a big handkerchief (remember them?); not a screen the size of the United Kingdom. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail we used wadded-up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. We didn’t fire-up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We pushed the mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But, she was right. We didn’t do the ‘green thing’.

We drank from a tap or fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the

whole razor when the blade got dull.

Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their Mums into a 24-hour taxi service in the family’s $60,000 ‘People Carrier’, which cost the same as a whole house did before the ‘green thing’.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances and we didn’t need a computerised gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pub.

But isn’t it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back then?

Study investigates age-related vision loss and driving performance

OLDER drivers with agerelated vision loss will be the focus of a new QUT study designed to test their on-the-road performance.

Professor Joanne Wood from QUT’s School of Optometry and Vision Science is an expert in the impact of ocular disease, vision and driving.

Professor Wood said agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) was the leading cause of blindness and loss of vision in Australia.

“The results from this study will indicate the nature of the driving difficulties experienced by participants in the group and assist in the design of possible interventions,” Dr Wood said.

She said major advances in treatment of AMD helped prevent further deterioration as long as possible.

“While the treatment doesn’t cure the condition it has allowed people to continue to perform every-day activities such

as driving,” Professor Wood said.

“Driving allows people to maintain their independence for longer and has been shown to have a positive effect on quality of life.”

Professor Wood said one in seven Australians over 50 years of age have some evidence of age-related macular degeneration.

She said data on older adults with age-related macular degeneration and their experiences of driving difficulties had been

recorded but a test of their actual driving ability hadn’t.

“Our goal is to maintain the safe driving ability for people with these eye conditions for as long as possible,” Professor Wood said.

“This could be achieved through education and training interventions.”

Professor Wood said possible interventions such as driver training, including training of scanning strategies as well as education are likely to assist in maintaining and improving driver safety.

Participants would be involved in two testing sessions, involving a series of vision, memory and awareness tests.

The second session would be a 45-minute driving research assessment with a qualified driving instructor which would have no effect on a participant’s driver’s licence.

Scam warning: Classifieds not all black and white

THE Office of Fair Trading is warning consumers to watch out for classified scams after reports of a sophisticated scam involving fraudulent shipping business websites.

Fair Trading Executive Director Brian Bauer said scammers are listing fake advertisements on trading websites and in local newspapers selling second-hand vehicles, caravans, motorcycles and boats.

“Consumers looking to purchase these items make contact with the scammers. They are told the seller has moved overseas but the goods are being held by a shipping company in Australia and are still available,” Mr Bauer said.

“The scammers, using a website and company name that mimics that of a legitimate shipping company, claim they will provide free shipping of the goods on payment.

“The scam’s websites look legitimate because the scammers use photos and logos from real businesses.

“Unfortunately for the consumers, they are paying for goods that don’t exist.

“We have reports that consumers have lost thousands of dollars to this scam, with little chance of ever recovering the money.”

There are a number of ways to protect yourself from classified scams.

“The most important tip is to never direct deposit or wire transfer money for an item you’ve never laid eyes on in person,” Mr Bauer said.
