IT’S official - older people who engage with the world around them are happier and healthier.

While physical activity and healthy eating are part of our good health, social connections are also vital for maximising health and happiness in older age.

Someone with high levels of social activity has 43 percent less disability than someone who has low levels of social activity, and about half the rate of cognitive decline.

Some of the greatest transitions in life occur in older age, including retiring, downsizing, or losing social ties. All of these changes have their effects but the secret to staying healthy as we age is having a good social life and staying active.

Queensland Seniors Week, our annual celebration of the contributions and achievements of seniors will be held this year from 16th to 24th August and a veritable smorgasbord of events is on offer. So dip into our calendar on pages 23 to 30 and find something you will enjoy or maybe even try something completely new. Take your pick from croquet, computer tips, concerts, morning teas, lawn bowls, genealogy, writers’ groups – the list goes on and there’s something for everyone, including many free activities.

Our two local councils support and promote a range of events during Seniors Week, to encourage us to continue to participate in all aspects of community life. Let’s end our winter hibernation, start sharing ourselves around and celebrating the things we can still do.

QCWA Young Leaders Leadership School 2014 The QCWA Young Leaders Leadership School will be on in September and once again will promote leadership roles and life skills for young women.

Their new log and newly named group, The Young Leaders, has been a long time in the development and will proudly be on show at the Leadership School.

The history of this group dates back to 1930, where the QCWA formed the QCWA Younger Sets. This allowed girls and young women the opportunity to learn many skills, which included public

speaking and dress making. The girls made many friends over the years and these were lifelong. At the schools they learned about cooking and handcrafts and there was a “QCWA Younger Setter of the Year’’ awarded each year.

Today the girls have expanded their knowledge in many fields.

They now call themselves the QCWA Young Leaders and have a new logo to go with their new name.

The first Leadership School was held in 1948 at Lota.This year the Young Leaders Leader-

ship School will be held from the 21st- 26th of September at the Apex Camp Mudjimba on the Sunshine Coast near Maroochydore.

This year the girls will take part in workshops, which will include learning positions such as President, Treasurer and International Officer and many others. The girls will have several guest speakers including oneon-one driver awareness, learning about astronomy and finding out about ‘citrus’ will be some of the activities the girls will take part in.

Each year the Young Leader members also take part in yearly competitions. These include cooking, handcrafts, photography and many more.

The International section depicts the wide array of knowledge the girls learn when studying other countries.

A formal dinner is one of the highlights where the Miss Young Leader is announced. The girls will also have another dinner which this year has the theme of ‘Tropical Dressup’.

This is being held to raise awareness about juvenile diabetes.

How will the carbon tax repeal affect you?

ELECTRICITY and gas prices for EnergyAustralia residential and small business customers will fall after the Federal Senate approved the carbon price repeal, Executive Manager – Corporate Affairs, Clare Savage has said.

With EnergyAustralia no longer required to pay for carbon, the savings will be passed onto households and backdated to 1 July, 2014.

“We understand customers are facing cost of living pressures and the repeal means electricity prices will now drop,” Ms Savage said.

“We have been clear we will pass on the savings to households once the Federal Government stops collecting the tax from us.

“The carbon price removal will impact electricity and gas costs differently for each user as it will depend on their current tariff, where they live

and how much energy they use.

“We will notify customers in the coming weeks about the pricing changes and what that will mean for them.”

Ms Savage said work was well advanced on removing the carbon component from the hundreds of different products and tariffs.

“Unfortunately implementing system changes to remove carbon is not as simple as pressing a button - altering prices is a highly complex process and it’s important we make sure the changes are done correctly,” she said.

The carbon component will be removed from prices by mid-September. The backdated savings will be provided as a credit on household bills.

Individual credits will flow to customers according to their billing cycle.

Grant approved for ANZAC Equestrian History The ANZAC Equestrian History Project has received the go-ahead.

Noosa Institute for SocioEconomic & Environmental Research (NISER) has successfully secured Queensland and Federal government funding of $29,500 to undertake the project between now and Anzac Day 2015.

The project will recount

and record the local Sunshine Coast ANZAC Equestrian History based on those who served in WW1. It will outline the strong contribution of manpower and horses made by theANZAC’s who enlisted from the Greater Sunshine Coast region.

The project has strong support from the Sunshine Coast film industry, local equestrian groups and organisations and reenactment troops. ON 1st August 2014, Australia will phase out accepting signature as a valid form of authorisation on chipenabled credit and debit cards. You will have to use a PIN (Personal Identification Number).So make sure you are prepared for this change.

Without a valid form of authorisation, you could find yourself unable to pay for goods including petrol and groceries. To ensure successful transactions at the checkout after 1st August become PINwise today.”

The move to PIN is an overdue update to the nation’s payment technology that will make transacting the safest it’s ever been; however as with any behavioural change, for some the new practice may take some getting used to.

Choose a PIN that is memorable but not crackable. Don’t use the numbers on the card, your birthday, or choose repetitive or consecutive numbers that are easy to guess.

Devise a system that works for you

and choose something that is memorable for you to recall but difficult for others to guess. And remember, don’t share your PIN with anyone else.

When it comes to preparing, allow at least two weeks to become PINwise. In some cases it can take as little as 10 seconds to update your PIN, for others it can take a couple of days. In any case, the more time you leave to practice and familiariseyourself with increased PIN use, the better.

Starting with some of the nation’s largest merchants, the move will see all of Australia’s 800,000 merchant payment terminals undergo updates to no longer accept signature as the main form of card authorisation for most Australian cardholders.

There will be no change to contactless or online transactions.

Signature will still be a valid form of payment authorisation for visitors from overseas.

SUNSHINE Coast Council will move into the role of major sponsor when it hands the community the leading reins to two of the Coast’s much-loved Christmas Carols this year. Community Programs Portfolio Chair, Councillor Jenny McKay today announced that the Carols at Cotton Tree and Carols on Kings community events will now be delivered by local organisation, Calvary Christian Church, to encourage the successful events to continue to cater for a growing community.

“Earlier this year, Council sought registrations of interest from local based not-for-profit organisations to produce the Cotton Tree and Kings Beach traditional carols events - with Council as a major sponsor,” Cr McKay said. At its Ordinary Meeting in January 2014, Council also resolved to approach the organisers of identified, high profile, established community Christmas Carol events to offer sponsorship arrangements.

Sunshine Coast Council promotes and supports over 50 community carols events and provides funding through the Community Grants Festive Season category – entries open August 1 and close September 15.

Give older workers a chance IF the federal government is serious about extending the working life of the average Australian, it must fund research that will identify the skills older workers lack, the characteristics employers are looking for, and other barriers that keep older people out of the workforce, says human resources expert, Dr Keri Spooner.

Dr Spooner, who is a senior academic in the management discipline group at the University of Tasmania (UTS), tells Wendy Frew from UTS that “we have always known we would face an ageing population and that any government would try to restrict access to the age pension”.

However, she adds, if older people end up “on the dole” or on disability pensions, all Australia would have achieved is a loss of dignity for older people.

“We can also be confident that older workers will cope better in the workforce if given half a chance,” says Dr Spooner. “There is a huge amount of research to show that some employers do want to hire older workers,” she says, adding that they are attracted to their experience, maturity and reliability.

Hardware chain Bunnings and one of Australia’s biggest banks, Westpac, are reportedly among the companies seeking older workers.

“Who are these companies employing? Ex-bankers, accountants, lawyers, people with good communication skills. Ex-school teachers are working in call centres, former nurses are even selling medical goods.”

UTS Professor Susan Thorp, whose research focuses on retirement savings and long horizon wealth management, says that under existing rules, a person born in 1964 will have seven years between gaining ac-

cess to their superannuation at the age of 60 and being eligible for the age pension at 67.

On average, people have only $200,000 in superannuation when they retire, she adds.

“Seven years is a long time in self funded retirement – enough to use up $200,000 if you withdraw annual income roughly equal to the full pension.

“If someone faces a gap between getting their super and getting the pension, they might move onto the disability pension. But what happens if the government tightens the eligibility for that pension? How the government sets the screening standards for the disability pension will make a big difference for many people.

“It is not difficult to imagine a range of jobs that people simply can’t keep doing when they are in their 60s or 70s – electricians, plumbers, even farmers – and that could mean you might have to go on to the unemployment benefit, which is very low.”

Professor Thorp claims many people overestimate the value of a retirement lump sum compared with a regular income and are unable to work out what a lump sum would mean in annual income.

“A superannuation lump sum is likely the biggest amount of money most people have ever seen in one hit. They have to decide what to do with it in that first year of retirement and what to do for the next 25 years.

“The uncertainty multiplies because we don’t know how long we are going to live, we don’t know what the government will do to pensions and superannuation rules and we don’t know what the investment markets will do.”

On Tuesday night Palmer United senators surprised everyone by voting to retain the Coalition’s amended financial advice regulations which remove the best-interest catch-all; scrap the two-yearly optin; end mandatory fee disclosure statements for pre-1 July 2013 customers; and provide for scaled advice. “Australians left destitute by shonky financial advisers are stunned that Palmer United has allowed these changes to stand,� said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. “After a lifetime of scrimping and saving for retirement, seniors are passionate about transparency in financial advice and fees,� he said. “This murky last-minute deal was done behind closed doors and without consumer consultation.� “It makes a mockery of the parliamentary process

and it’s a disgrace,� he said. “Palmer United’s socalled ‘new consumer protections’ do little or nothing for investors; for example, an annual fee disclosure requirement for post-2013 clients is actually one of the Government’s existing watered-down provisions�.

Palmer United has sided with the Government to: Remove the requirement that, every two years, financial advisers confirm their clients want to keep paying commissions and fees for services they may no longer receive; Remove the catch-all aspect of the duty to put the client’s interests first and, in doing so, provide a safe harbour for advisers against investors claiming for their losses; Remove the requirement for fee-disclosure statements to be sent to pre-1 July 2013 clients, denying already committed investors transparency afforded to others; Allow for the provision of ‘scaled advice’ which allows advisers to push a particular product without considering the consumer’s overall position.

plished genealogist, family historian and Fellow of QFHS made another welcome trip to Caloundra to present a talk at the group’s July General Meeting. The subject, not previously touched on by the group, sparked quite an amount of interest, as “A Genetic Look at Family History” was quite insightful. Ann gave some history on the subject and explained

the terminology of genetics before showing how to draw your family health tree. The possible inherited conditions which may show up in family history research were many, and health issues can be traced through the generations on a mapped family tree.

Naturally, with such an interesting subject, many questions arose, with Ann being able to answer most.

National Seniors Buderim NATIONAL Seniors Buderim Branch monthly meeting will be held in the Buderim Bowls Club, Elizabeth Street, Buderim at 9.30am on Monday 25 August, morning tea will be served. Cost is 4 dollars per person.

Removal of consumer protections under FOFA

THE government’s decision to unwind consumer protections is set to undermine trust in financial advisers and banks, and erode the Coalition’s support base.

Finance Minister, Mathias Cormann, has announced the government will proceed with plans to scrap key consumer protections embedded in financial advice reforms implemented in the wake of the Storm and Opes Prime collapses.

National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the government had clearly put big business ahead of consumers.

“This refusal to budge will undermine trust in financial advisers and strike at the heart of the Coalition’s support base,” he said.

“As the system grows increasingly complex Australians are forced to seek professional help. Instead they’re finding themselves either weighed down by hidden fees or, on the back of shoddy, commission-driven advice, destitute in retirement”.

“Australians should not be paying commissions for advice they do not

receive; every investor should see full fee disclosures annually; and we all should know that the nice lady at the bank is being well-rewarded for that product she’s just encouraged us to buy”.

Doone, a Treasurer for five years of the Coolum Branch has spent her time and talents making hundreds of blankets for the homeless as well as other voluntary work in the Coolum area. She received her award from ARC Board member and Sunshine Coast Zone Representative, Maureen Farrington at the Coolum Branch AGM in July. community news Calling for Women’s Weekly Cookbooks RED Cross Shops around Australia have come up with a fabulous way to mark the 100th birthday of Australian Red Cross in August this year, and support the Red Cross Big Cake Bake as well.

More than 150 Red Cross Shops from Bowen to Burnie, and Broken Hill to Broome want us to rifle through our kitchens this month to look for any unwanted Women’s Weekly cookbooks in good condition, and 50’s Australian kitchen kitsch.

Donate your books and 50’s kitchen kitsch to your nearest Red Cross Shop, and not only will you be helping to create an eye catching centenary window display for your local Red Cross Shop during August, but they will also be able to re-sell the books and kitchen kitsch afterwards, to raise money for the everyday work of Red Cross.

Right behind the idea is none other than the amazing Pamela Clark, friend and mentor to a whole generation of Australian cooks, reared on recipes from the pages of Women’s Weekly Cookbooks.

BEYONDBLUE is giving away free computers and internet connections to newly-established Men’s Sheds across Australia.

We still have quite a few computers to give away and I would encourage anyone thinking about establishing a new Men’s Shed in their community to get in touch with the Australian Men’s Shed Association, which administers this initiative.

The Australian Men’s Shed movement has brought together thousands of men over the past decade to share their interests, learn skills and build lifelong friendships – and this has benefitted not only the communities in which the sheds have been established, but also the men themselves.

The ‘Intercolonial Exhibition of 1876’ was held from 22 - 26 August. A public holiday was declared and on opening day 17,000 people attended - a colossal success, given that the total population of Brisbane at the time was only 22,000.

Men attended in their

suits and ladies in their finest garments. Food was served on long tables and the first showbag - a bag of coal - was free for all visitors.

The first ‘Royal’ Show was held in 1921, when the Association was granted the prefix under warrant from His Majesty King George V. Since then, the shortened

name “Ekka” has replaced “Exhibition” in the Queensland vernacular, indicating locals’ affection for the Show.

Ekka has since been held every year with only two exceptions. In 1919, Brisbane suffered a Spanish influenza epidemic, and in 1942 during wartime the Showgrounds were used as a staging depot for troops moving north.

Today, Ekka runs for ten days and attracts about half a million visitors every August. Ekka is famous for its mix of entertainment, agriculture and education. Residents enjoying the anniversary celebrations

NOOSA Domain Village reached a milestone in July marking the 5 year anniversary of the first residents occupying the village. To celebrate the occasion, the current residents in Stage 1 invited future residents from Stage 2 and Stage 3 to sample the atmosphere at the residents weekly ‘Happy Hour’. There was plenty of champagne at Noosa Domain, lots of smiling faces and friendly chit-chat, even a few games of pool.

Stage 1 of Noosa Domain Village consists of 37 free standing independent living villas, a luxurious community centre, library, cinema, residents bar, gymnasium, heated swimming pool, bowling green and hobby workshop. On the 1st of July 2009, John & Robin Arrell were the first to take the plunge with Trevor & Glennis Browne and Maureen Gillard taking occupancy shortly after. At the celebration, Village Manager Phillip Whittle congratulated the resi-

dents and thanked them all for creating the wonderful culture that exists within the village today.

Carmel Porter, Wayne Ford and Lawrie Woods each had echoing sentiments when addressing the gathering of around 70 people, saying how much they enjoyed life in the village and moving into the village was the best decision they have made.

Local identities’ stories unfold THE stories of some of the Coast’s colourful local identities have been captured in short digital stories as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s 160 Characters project.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said 160 Characters shines the spotlight on the region’s special characters of the past and present, illuminating the richness of the Sunshine Coast’s cultural heritage.

“Council aims to work with communities to record, preserve, and share the region’s collective memories and diverse experiences,” Cr McKay said.

“The 160 Characters project merges new technologies with the Coast’s intangible heritage – using the visual format of the popular short film to capture the stories of places, people and communities. “Today, our community heritage is often recorded and transmitted using mobile phones, digital cameras and social media applications such as Twitter and Facebook.

“The region’s identity and unique char-

acter can be discovered through these personal reflections of living on the Sunshine Coast.

“Just released is the intriguing story of long-standing Coast identity Ashley Robinson.

“Ashley is a regular columnist with the Sunshine Coast Daily and is recognised for his outstanding Rugby League career and his long association with the hospitality industry on the Sunshine Coast.

“Ashley’s story, ‘A Charitable Heart’, reveals his passion for local charities and his commitment to the Mudjimba Island Charity Swim.”

The 160 Characters project is funded through the Cultural Heritage Levy.

Bequests are gifts that keep on giving DOREEN Bengston has been donating to Blue Care for almost 60 years, and now plans to leave a bequest to the not-for-profit organisation in her Will.

Ms Bengston’s parents and brother received Blue Care services, and Ms Bengston herself will shortly move into the new Azure Blue Carina complex.

“I have loved the feeling of supporting Blue Care during my life,” Ms Bengston said. “Leaving a bequest that keeps giving when I am no longer here gives me a great feeling.”

RSL Care recognises volunteers VOLUNTEERS from RSL Care’s Chelsea Retirement Community were recognised for their invaluable support and community spirit, on Tuesday 3 June 2014.

Diversional Therapist Colleen Burns said the site’s residents and employees were excited to host a thank you luncheon, to share their great appreciation for the site’s volunteers who generously donated their time and skills. “Our volunteers are real assets to the Chelsea community and we look forward to honouring them for their fantastic efforts,” she said.

“Currently we have 12 regular volunteers who assist with a variety of activities including helping in the laundry, providing transport, hairdressing, and music recitals.” Colleen said the Chelsea community was grateful to have the support of so many wonderful volunteers. “We really value the efforts of our volunteers, which is why we hold

our quarterly thank you luncheons,” she said. “They make a true difference in the world and our community wouldn’t be the same without them.”

For those who have approached their doctors for advice, more often than not, an effective treatment is quickly and conveniently made available. Surgery is usually the last-resort due to the unpleasant nature of the side-effects such as incontinence and impotence. Most cases can be adequately treated with orally taken over-the-counter medication such as the popular Magnus Shield, developed and distributed by Graminex Australia.

Trevor Cottle, who is in

charge of running the regular meetings with his prostate support group in Box Hill, Victoria, underwent prostate surgery 8 years ago and lost his brother to prostate cancer, feels the same.

He added, “ the prostate support groups have been formed by men, for men, who are interested in prostate health issues and want to do something about.”

Magpie season brings out the zip tie fashion statement ZIP tied helmets are all the rage again as the magpie breeding season returns. From now through to early December, male magpies become overprotective parents and may swoop passing pedestrians, cyclists and the occasional unlucky postie.

A magpie swoop zone extends only about 100m from their nest tree, although this area can extend for cyclists.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said unlike our teenage children, magpies left the nest about six weeks after hatching and it was during this period their parents were most protective.

“I ask residents to be patient and compassionate with breeding birds during this time,” Cr McKay said.

“There are some simple steps to avoid being swooped by a magpie including avoiding known magpie areas, wearing hats and helmets, using an umbrella, dismounting bikes and maintaining eye contact with the bird.

“If you are being swooped by a particularly aggressive magpie at home or on private property, private contractors can be contacted for assistance.”

Council officers are not authorised to capture or relocate overly-aggressive magpies.

Complaints regarding swooping birds on council land will be assessed and a decision made regarding monitoring the site, erecting signs to warn pedestrians or engaging a licensed private wildlife contractor.

Search for yield for retirees AS things begin to “normalise” after the gyrations of the GFC it is timely to reflect on the structure of our income stream investment portfolios. A portfolio that was set in a balanced manner prior to 2008 would more than likely have had most of its defensive assets used up via income payments during this period.

In addition it could still be sitting with a very high exposure to growth assets. If that is the case, it is not such a bad thing as our Australian shares have recovered significantly since March 2009, and most good international share funds had returns of around 40% through the 2013 calendar year. If this scenario strikes a chord with how your pension fund is bubbling along it may well be good timing to review the balance of your investments and look at the volatility exposure within them.

In doing it is important to look for assets that will

give you a reasonable yield, with a high probability of little downside volatility. A well constructed portfolio that will provide opportunity for long term growth and limited chance of volatility would be the ideal. There should be a mid-tier layer of defensive assets and this might be invested in medium term securities. The remainder of the fund should be invested in cash and term deposits so that it is easily accessible to provide your income supply, as well as extra cash for unplanned surprises.

The income yield from your share funds should be typically around 3%5% p.a. and the asset will largely remain untouched as it is really there as a hedge against inflation.

The smallest part of the portfolio is in term deposits and cash, which are going to have limited returns.

The idea is to squeeze as much yield as possible from the mid-tier assets. A

traditional asset to fill this space has been Bond Funds or buying direct long term government bonds. Bonds are a misunderstood asset by many and can in fact be very volatile. A less aggressive solution for this asset is to use what can be described as enhanced yield managed funds. Unlike a bond fund invested almost solely in medium and long term bonds these invest in cash, short term corporate bonds and hybrid securities. There are a number of these that have been around for 10 years or more and have total returns between 1.5% and 2% higher than term deposit rate. Typically the income is higher than Term Deposit rates and there is some capital growth.

Research done in the US over the last couple of years shows that an income stream with assets structured effectively should be capable of supplying an income stream

of up to 6% per annum for the life time of the recipient, considering it is managed ongoing.

The Carbon Tax is dead

THE carbon tax is dead; but don’t expect to see a major difference in power bills - or for too long.

It doesn’t matter that many households were compensated for any impact of the scheme under the Household Assistance Package, or that the carbon tax prevented 11 to 17 million tonnes of carbon emissions.

Nor does it matter higher it resulted in some filthy brown-coal fired power stations being mothballed.

Like it or loathe it, it’s kaput. The passing of the repeal turned Australia from a leader to laggard.

“The repeal of Australia’s carbon price is a tragedy, not a triumph,” said Michael Raupach, Direc-

tor, Climate Change Institute, Australian National University.

“It flies in the face of three giant realities: human-induced climate change, the proper role of government as a defender of the common good, and the emerging quiet energy-carbon revolution”.

According to the ABC, consumers can expect to save between 20 and 50 cents each day on their electricity bills now the carbon tax has been repealed. However, any financial benefit relating to power bills could quickly be eaten up by increases in other charges.

For example, in New South Wales, Ausgrid wants increases of around 2 per cent a year

over the next five years and TransGrid wants to raise prices by almost 4 per cent - this is just in relation to network charges.

Other states including South Australia have just implemented more electricity price rises. The average South Australian household will pay around $85 a year more.

In Queensland, households were recently hit with a 13.6 per cent increase, expected to cost the average household an extra $190 a year.

Any relief may have already been gobbled up before many will receive their post-carbon tax bill.

Right advice is key to helping better manage incontinence DESPITE its prevalence incontinence remains a difficult topic for people to talk about even to their pharmacist or a GP. The right advice and right products are the keys to managing the condition so a person can get on with everyday life and continue enjoying usual activities.

Dr Penny Adams is a practicing GP on Sydney’s North Shore, and sees many patients ‘self diagnosing’ and subsequently trying to manage their incontinence.

Dr Adams believes that local pharmacies play an integral part in helping patients select continence products that fit properly and provide both appropriate absorbency levels and skin protection. “Patients need to discuss their problem openly and seek a medical diagnosis of the underlying condition causing the incontinence with their GP,” she said.

“Following this, they should go straight into their local pharmacy for advice on appropriate product selection to give them peace-of-mind during any prescribed treatment or beyond as they seek to resume and enjoy everyday activities like golf or bowls,” Dr Adams added.

Preventing Financial Abuse of People with Dementia ON June 18 Alzheimer’s Australia NSW (AlzNSW) launched a discussion paper at NSW Parliament House. The paper, Preventing Financial Abuse of People with Dementia, examines how financial abuse of people with dementia occurs and what can be done to prevent or reduce the incidence of abuse.

It is difficult to calculate the prevalence of financial abuse of people with dementia as it occurs in a multitude of ways and much of it remains unreported to authorities. People with dementia may have diminished capacity to recall the financial abuse or lack insight to understand the abuse. The percentage of cases that go unreported is also likely to be high due to feelings of stigma, shame and embarrassment experienced by people who are victims of financial abuse and their families.

AlzNSW found that people with dementia, family members and service providers are reluctant to report financial abuse. Victims are often in a relationship of dependence with the perpetrator and may fear repercussions if they report the abuse. There is also confusion about who to report abuse to. When financial abuse is reported there are challenges in investigating cases as it can be difficult to substantiate and prove, especially when the victim has dementia.

Much financial abuse is perpetrated within families and by people known to the victim. The research also suggests that a considerable proportion of financial abuse is perpetrated by people appointed a power of attorney who fail to act in the best interests of the person with dementia.

However, not all financial abuse of people with dementia is perpetrated by family members and those holding powers of attorney. People with dementia, particularly those who live alone, are susceptible to exploitation and abuse by neighbours and friends who prey on their vulnerability.

A number of strategies to reduce and resolve incidences of financial abuse of people with dementia are examined in the paper. The research findings and recommendations have implications for many stakeholders including governments, lawyers, police, banks and community services.

BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service is in Nambour

WOMEN from Nambour and the surrounding areas are being urged to take advantage of BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service which will visit the Nambour Mill Shopping Centre from 1 19 September 2014.

While BreastScreen will still operate the permanent screening service at the Nambour General Hospital the mobile service at the shopping centre will give local woman a choice of where they have their breastscreen performed.

BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Service Medical Director Dr Deborah Pfeiffer said there is no need for women in the Nambour area to put off having a breastscreen any longer.

“It’s quick, simple, convenient, free and there is abundant

parking at the shopping centre site.” said Dr Pfeiffer.

Breast Cancer impacts more than two and a half thousand women Queensland women and their families every year.

As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible.

BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a women or her doctor can feel anything.

All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service.

Arthritis Aid a Big Hit WHEN a New Zealand woman devised a means of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain, stiff joints and swollen ankles, she did not anticipate the demand that would ensue for her Aircycle.

day; a cherry blossom tree in a shadowy place will bloom several days later than a tree in a sunny place.

Come on an adventure to Ancient Rome!

Silvie Paladino appearing in Brisbane SILVIE Paladino will sing in the Queensland Pops Orchestra’s next concert: Broadway Spectacular on 16th August with fellow Melbournian Kane Alexander.

Silvie Paladino has one of the greatest female voices in Australia.

Her remarkable vocal range enables her to sing a vast repertoire including jazz, contemporary, musical theatre and light opera.

Silvie is well known to audiences through her stage

and screen appearances. Her first theatrical role was Eponine in the Australasian tour of Les Miserables. She was then invited to perform the same role on the West End in the London production. In 1997, Silvie returned to London and performed the role of Fantine in Les Miserables for a successful two-year season.

She has also performed lead roles in shows such as Cats, Miss Saigon, Mamma Mia and Chess, as well as a regular favourite at Carols by Candlelight.

Cast from Ancient Rome

A talented group of Sunshine Coast senior performers will present the musical theatre comedy Ancient Roamin’s at The Events Centre Caloundra in September and they need an enthusiastic audience to join them on a hilarious adventure to Ancient Rome.

Ancient Roamins’ is a delightful play written by playwright Kev Hallewell with a humorous story line, gags, dance, music and well known songs from musicals that will stimulate wonderful memories and leave the whole audience singing along.

An elderly couple accidently rub a magic teapot that they bought at a local church bazaar and

they are then transported to Ancient Rome. The plot twists as they become involved in a complicated and comedic love triangle with Hero, Cleo and Smartyass.

The concert Director Norma Fox said, “I am absolutely thrilled from the response from our first performance “A Magatha Mystrie’ and am delightful to work with the cast again on this new project.

We can’t wait to bring the show to life with another live performance’.

Over 20 seasoned local performers are rehearsing twice a week to showcase their unique stage skills.

They have been preparing costumes, stage sets and diligently learning their lines in anticipation that the success of the

program will provide ongoing opportunities for senior performers to come out of the woodwork and tread the boards once again.

The Events Centre General Manager Gary Mears said “this is the second performance from the group of talented singers, actors and musicians who had regularly taken to the stage throughout their lives and the Events Centre is pleased to provide them with a chance to be a star again as they bring the joy of entertainment to others.”

A SPECIAL concert will be taking place in Coolum soon…….. the choir of St Peter’s Catholic Church will present an afternoon of extra-ordinary musical entertainment.

Well known and adored by the Church congregation, the choir has a diverse energy normally experienced only during worship and Mass. This talented choir’s audience often applauds its Sunday performances!

In recent years the choir has grown from a small quartet to more than double its size as more churchgoers realize the joys of singing. It’s hard not to sing and clap along with Larraine O’Brien at the piano/organ,

as she belts out hymns of celebration, or the quieter music of devotions.

Larraine (pictured) has been playing the piano longer than she cares to remember and is influenced mainly by classical music. Her favourite music is the symphonies of Tchaikovsky.

Sometimes she is ‘borrowed’ by other Coolum Churches to play for their services too.

In the true spirit of giving and sharing, the St Peter’s choir will sing and play their music for one and all to enjoy, whilst raising funds to help the homeless. The concert will feature celebratory choral music, ‘two-piano’ works, songs and music from around the world.

Drinks will be served on arrival, and cocktail finger food arranged by Celebrity Chef Peter Howard, will be served at interval. Peter is also a member of the St Peter’s choir, and now lives in retirement in Coolum.

One of the first TV chefs, he appeared over many years on Channel 9’s Midday & Today Shows and is the author of 19 food related books.

Peter Howard Says: “I was taught classical French cooking which is still my favourite but I am able to turn my hand to most cuisines – the beauty of living in this multicultural land of ours.

The cooking at my home is shared...as it should be!

‘The Sounds Of Celebration’ concert is not only a joy to be a part of but it is also a Celebration of community and to relish what we have as our community. “ St Peter’s Church, Elizabeth Street, Coolum Beach on Sunday 17th August from 2-4pm. $10 per person and tickets are available at the door.

ON Thursday 7th August, the third “Morning Melodies” concert in the Buderim Memorial Hall will present some ‘winter warmers’, songs selected to warm the hearts of the audience. On this occasion the Buderim Male Choir will be joined by choirs from Immanuel Lutheran College, which will include a senior boys choir.

Funding available for diverse range of art projects THE Sunshine Coast is home to all kinds of actors, producers, musicians and talented artists – and Sunshine Coast Council is calling on them to apply for a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant to help with their artistic ventures.

The latest major round of RADF – open from July 16 to September 1 – offers up to $10,000 in funding for concept, skills and career development.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the partnership between the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council encouraged a broad range of artists and community groups to develop their art careers and projects.

“With the assistance of RADF funding, I’m proud Council can help boost the careers of our local artists and organisations through skills development or support of their latest creative projects,” Cr McKay said.

EKKA - Tree Bombing THE QCWA knitting and crocheting brigade have been invited to the EKKA to be part of their tree bombing.

Bombing is where knitting or crochet is done to cover a thing, eg tree, statue,lamp post, chairs, bicycles.

The ladies had experienced a knitting-covered shopping trolley with all the articles in the trolley also knitted. The knitting or crochet can take any shape or form, eg squares, lengths, circles, any size and length. Then all are joined together to be placed/covered over whatever is being bombed.

This artform usually is appreciated by onlookers and brings a smile to ones face. Viewed as artistic and an expression of the maker. This has been something different for the QCWA ladies, compared to the regular jumpers, scarves

She was invited to perform at the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival in New Zealand.
