Student Leaders lend a hand for charity

THE occasion was Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea as held at Paradise Point Uniting Church to raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland.

With over 30 tables of guests expected to enjoy the fundraiser, it was the job of many volunteers to not only set up the garden venue (including marquees) and then put everything away at the end of the day, but to ensure the event ran smoothly, which it did.

Among the willing helpers were Year 11 and 12 Student Leaders from Coombabah State High School, Student Leaders who not only extended warm welcomes to all at the en-

trance; then showed guests to their seats, but who took on the roles of waiters and dishwashers as well.

School officials and parents should be pleased - and proud - to know that many comments were heard throughout the Morning Tea about the students’ thoughtfulness, kindness and polite interaction, often with elderly guests and those confined to wheelchairs. The teaming of Paradise Point Uniting Church and Coombabah State High School has proven to be a winning combination at past events too. Well done to all.

TELSTRA recently trialled two world first wearable technology apps with a select group of employees with vision and hearing impairment to understand how they may assist enabling people with disability to become more independent in their work and home life.

The vision impaired app enables users who are blind or have vision impairment to receive audio descriptions of objects in front of them.

The hearing impaired

app transcribes speech for those who are deaf or have hearing impairment, allowing them to follow a conversation, such as a meeting discussion or a speech at a conference.

Dr Hugh Bradlow, Telstra’s Chief Technology Officer said understanding the ways in which wearable technology can enhance the lives of people with disabilities is in its infancy but the future possibilities are exciting.

“Wearable technology

will narrow the gap between people with and without disability to undertake everyday tasks in a more efficient and comfortable way.

“For example, the vision impaired app can help a person identify the correct bathroom to use when in an unfamiliar environment. The person wearing Google Glass simply focuses at the sign on the door, commands Google Glass to identify the object and then receives an audio description of the sign,”

said DrBradlow.

The vision impaired app was trialled by Telstra employee, Kelly Schulz, who experienced the app both at work and at home.

“The vision impaired app made many every day activities so much easier, and hands free. I was able to easily distinguish the decaf coffee tin from the full strength one in the kitchen at work, where normally I’d need to ask a colleague. And at home it made it easy to pair up matching socks, when normally near enough is good enough,” said Kelly.

Peter Miller, a Telstra employee with hearing impairment was excited to learn the benefits of the hearing impaired app at work as he often finds it difficult to follow conversations in a meeting when there is more than one participant.

“The app translates what’s being said and is right in front of me on the Glass home screen so I am able to still look at people rather than having to look at my computer for a transcript of what’s been said, I feel like a more active participant at meetings now. And because you wear the Glass, there is no need to get to a meeting and set up other technology or request special services, I simply walk in and engage like the rest of the participants; it’s really exciting,” said Peter. Although there are no direct plans to offer this service to a wider group of participants at this stage, this is another step in Telstra’s journey of caring for customers and identifying emerging technologies that will provide a more brilliant connected future for everyone.

By Jo Marsh TUCKED away in the Federal Government’s 2014 budget is a declaration that could seriously threaten the very lifestyle of many of this country’s seniors.

The government has announced it is axing the National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners and Seniors Card Holders, starting from July 1, 2014, which will directly affect discounts on council rates, water and sewerage bills, energy bills, car registration and public transport fares.

Without the support of Commonwealth funding, it will be the responsibility of state and local governments to make up the shortfall, or pensioners will lose some of their discounts.

You start to worry about increases in costs and whether you are going to be able to pay your bills,” she said.

“If you are used to being able to pay your bills on time, this is an issue that makes it bad on your nerves.”

On top of increases in household bills, reducing access to discounted public transport will leave many seniors isolated.

“I’ll be stuck in my home,” a worried Mrs Beaumont said.

“I already have to rely on friends or neighbours to give me a lift to things like medical appointments.

Train trips to visit relatives will be unaffordable if we have to pay full fare.”

Federal Opposition families and payments spokeswoman Jenny Macklin said the budget is cutting $1.3 billion in support and concessions for vital services.

“The National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners and Seniors Card Holders will be axed from 1 July this year,” Ms Macklin said.

“Either the states will have to pick up the bill, or pensioners will go without important discounts for essential services.

“Tony Abbott unilaterally abolished the agreement in last week’s budget, without any warning to his Liberal and Labor state and territory colleagues.

“This is an additional blow to pensioners, who are also going to have their pensions cut because of Tony Abbott, as well as being slugged with new taxes on fuel and GP visits.

“These cuts will hurt more than 600,000

Queensland pensioners, including more than 400,000 full-rate pensioners who currently have no income other than the $20,000 a year they receive from the Age Pension.”

Pensioner discounts are jointly funded by the state and federal governments, and in the case of council rates, by local government. The exact impact on individuals is not yet known, although National Seniors Australia (NSA) figures show the average pensioner receives around $800 per annum in concessions.

The 2014-15 Budget Review document, available from the Federal Parliamentary Library website, states that “… it is likely that, without this financial assistance, many concessions currently available will be withdrawn or reduced. Any changes will raise the cost of living for pensioners and retirees, particularly in terms of energy bills and transport costs.”

Speaking at the NSA Zone Conference in Toowoomba on May 21, NSA president Michael O’Neill said he was “concerned the concessions will be halted”.

Mr O’Neill said NSA staff are still working through the figures in an attempt to quantify the proposed cuts. In response to a question from the floor, Mr O’Neill confirmed that the majority of concessions are federally funded.

If you are concerned about the issue of cuts to pensioner concessions, then voice your opinion directly to both your local Federal MP and any of the independent Senators as soon as possible, before the budget changes become law.

community news Federal budget implications for seniors

AGED pensioners will be hit with slower growth in their pension payments and tightened eligibility tests from 2017, under the Coalition’s first budget which seeks to curtail the rapidly expanding costs of the ageing population.

But the federal budget has seen the government dismiss one of the key recommendations of the Commission of Audit - to include the family home in the asset test for the aged pension.

The Abbott government has confirmed the pension age will rise to 70 by 2035.

In what may be an opportunity for the increasing army of older job-seekers, the government will pay subsidies of up to $10,000

over two years to employers who hire mature workers - those over 50.

From September 2017 onwards, the aged pension will no longer grow in line with average male weekly earnings - instead it will be indexed twice a year against inflation.

Mr Hockey said the move would ensure the government could “make pensions sustainable and affordable for decades to come”.

The changes to indexation for the aged pension, along with parenting payments, carers payments, Veteran Affairs pensions and the Disability Support Pensions, will save the government close to $400 million in 2017-18 alone.

Further savings of half a billion in 2017-18 will be made by freezing the eligibility thresholds for pension payments from 1 July 2017. That means the amount pensioners can earn before their payments start being reduced, which is currently up to $156 a fortnight, will not increase year on year.

The Coalition will also move to tighten the eligibility criteria for full- or part-pension payments, by determining that older Australians are earning a higher rate on investments over $30,000.

The Seniors Supplement, which provided annual payments of $876.20 for single adults who were eligible for the Common-

wealth Seniors Health Card, and $1320.80 for couples, has been scrapped. And the eligibility criteria around the health card has been tightened, now taking into account untaxed superannuation.

But the income thresholds for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card will be indexed annually against the Consumer Price Index, which will mean about 27,000 more self-funded retirees will not lose out on the entitlement because of modest changes in their incomes.

The Seniors Health Care and Pension Concession Cards have also been hit, with the government axing a range of concessions

which will save the budget $1.3 billion over four years. The Coalition has also scrapped the Mature Age Workers Tax Offset which provided tax concessions of up to $500 for people over 55 who had a

net income from working.

Aged care has also been hit in the budget, with the government saving $1.7 billion over six years from 1 July 2018 by slowing the growth in the Commonwealth Home Support Pro-

gram. Another $652 million has been saved over the next four years by scrapping Payroll Tax Supplement payments to eligible aged care providers from 1 January 2015.

community news Official launch of Vinnies’ Sleepout

THE official launch of the 2014 Vinnies Gold Coast Community Sleepout to raise money and awareness to combat homelessness took place in May in Anzac Park, Southport.

Internationally-renowned author Rob Mundle OAM, 2014 Gold Coast Community Sleepout Ambassador, joined the Vinnies team at the launch.

The Rosies – Friends on the Street van was also onsite providing soup and hot drinks for the homeless.

Vinnies is calling on local community leaders to raise much-needed funds before experiencing a night ‘sleeping rough’ on Thursday July 10.

Armed with only the clothes on their backs, a sleeping bag and a piece of cardboard, participants will have a cup of soup for dinner before

spending a night exposed to the elements.

To be part of this year’s Community Sleepout, business leaders can register online at www.communitysleepout.org.au to participate and collect online donations. The funds raised by participants will be used by Vinnies to provide programs and services in the wider Gold Coast area to those facing or experiencing homelessness.

Electricity costs blow out for older Queenslanders SENIORS in Queensland can expect to see their electricity bills rise by approximately $200 a year after the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) announced significant price increases today. Average electricity charges for smaller senior households will increase by 16 per cent from 1 July 2014 meaning an approximate $200 annual increase on the average bill for seniors. This is much more than the typical residential customer which will face an average 13.6 per cent increase.

National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said

the charges would hit the hip-pocket of all seniors, especially struggling pensioners. “These increases are again punishing pensioners and other seniors who are low energy users,’’ O’Neill said. “Many will go without their heaters in winters and their fans/air conditioning in summer because they simply can’t afford the escalating prices. “Older Queenslanders entitled to electricity concessions will be watching next week’s state budget with great interest to see if the concessions keep in line with these latest increases.�

Restoring trust in financial advice for retirees AUSTRALIA needs a robust, independent financial planning and advice industry to ensure retirees receive the best possible advice

for managing their retirement savings.

The call comes as Australia’s seniors’ advocacy organisation, COTA Australia, joined

with other consumer interest groups, such as Choice, to warn a Senate Inquiry about the detrimental impact of the proposed amendments to Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) legislation on tens of thousands of older Australians.

Sound financial advice, that puts the interest of the consumer first, is more important than ever given changes to the pension age, announced in the recent federal Budget.

Ian Yates, COTA Australia chief executive, told the FOFA Hearing of the Senate Economics Committee in Canberra last week that retirees need professionals, independent financial advice, as they have no opportunity to recoup lost investments or assets when financial advisors are swayed by commissions rather than advising on the best outcome for clients.

“The proposed changes remove important

safeguards which were put in place following the disasters of Storm Financial and West Point to stop inappropriate products being sold to vulnerable community members,” Mr Yates said.

“Just as important as those headline grabbing financial failures are the day to day problems and losses when people don’t get the best advice possible about their hard earned retirement savings,” he adds.

According to Mr Yates, weakening those safeguards removes important protections and the recourse for consumers against advisors or salespeople who choose to exploit the loopholes these changes would create.

“There is much uncertainty facing this and the next generation of retirees as they make arrangements for their financial security to live as active and as healthy as possible in their

retirement years,” he says.

COTA Australia believes trust in financial advice may be restored by a ban on all commissions or third party payments to all financial advisors and financial product sales, ensuring that scaled advice is fully subject to strict best interest protections.

MEMBERS of Red Cross branches on the Gold Coast enjoyed a luncheon at Earle Haven Retirement Village on 8th May to celebrate the birthday of the founder of International Red Cross, Henri Dunant, and the Centenary of Australian Red Cross.

Australian Red Cross was formed on 13th August, 1914 to assist in sending comfort parcels to soldiers. The luncheon was ably organised by Red Cross Gold Coast Zone representative, Laurel Connolly. OLDER Australians are calling on state and territory governments to maintain seniors’ concessions for electricity, water, public transport and council rates after funding cuts announced in the federal budget.

The federal government has abolished its share of funding for the National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners Concession Card and Seniors Card Holders.

The onus is now on state and territory governments to ensure these concessions continue,

Changes ahead for Australia Post AUSTRALIA Post has confirmed it is going the way of New Zealand, the UK and the USA with the introduction of first and second class stamps.

From next year a new system of sending mail will be implemented with people able to choose their speed for letter delivery (regular or priority), similar to first and second class stamps in New Zealand, the UK and USA. This follows on from the introduction of a two speed letter service for Australian businesses to begin on 2 June 2014.

Last week Australia Post announced it would begin to deliver parcels on Saturdays and extend guaranteed next-day Express Post letter and satchel delivery to households six days a week from

the end of the year. Eligible seniors with a valid concession card are also being reminded to open up their MyPost concession account to ensure they receive discounted stamps.

People with a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card, Department of Veteran’s Affairs Card or Veteran’s Repatriation Health Card are eligible to receive a MyPost concession card entitling them to five free concession stamps, with the option to purchase a maximum of 50 concession stamps per year.

The Broadwater Southport Rotary Club staged its 10th annual barefoot bowls competition at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club in Southport on May 25, with the 24 teams and 96 players taking part raising over $20,000 for four local children’s charities.

Monies raised during the Rotary Bare Your Soles for Kids Charity Barefoot Bowls Day has been generously donated to Southport Special School, Southport Surf Lifesaving Club Nippers, Radio Lollipop and Sailability Gold Coast.

Replacing missing teeth should make eating a more pleasant experience. Begin by eating soft foods and make sure to cut your food into smaller pieces. Chew with both sides of the mouth and keep an even pressure on the denture.

Avoid foods that are sticky or hard like caramels or chewing gum.

Denture adjustments Over time, adjusting your denture may be necessary. As time wares on, the shape and size of your mouth naturally changes; this can affect the fit of the denture. Your gums recede or shrink, resulting in a loose-fitting denture. Dentures that do not fit properly should be assessed and relined. Loose dentures can cause many problems, including pressure spots ulcers, or infections, which may take a long time to heal.

MORE than 6.1 Million Australians volunteer their time to help others or teach a new skill. One Gold Coast resident has devoted his life to teach photography to local residents.

Rain, hail or shine Burleigh Waters resident Anthony Grima has made the trip to The Pines Meeting Room – home of the 60 and Better Programme for a decade.

During the 2014 National Volunteer Week, Anthony was awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ by the Programme.

Recently, Anthony was also awarded a McPherson Award by Federal Member for McPherson, Karen

Andrews for services for the community.

The 80-year-old has been a professional freelance photographer and his skills are invaluable to those who seek them.

“I am honoured to win these awards for my community work. It feels great”, said Anthony.

“I’ve been a photographer since I was 18. I enjoy passing on any photography skills I have and I feel people are grateful.”

“You can read information out of a book, but it’s easy to forget it the next day. When you have a person teaching you and demonstrating, it’s much better to retain information.”

“I hope to keep on teach-

ing for another ten years.”

His classes are held at The Pines Meeting Room at 1pm on the second Wednesday of each month.

SENIORS newspaper reader JD wanted to share this idea with other Gold Coast seniors who might be looking for something interesting to do on a budget.

Once or twice a week but always Monday to Friday between 8.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m., JD uses her Translink Seniors ‘go’ card with its ‘Free Seniors Travel’ sticker attached to it to travel (‘I love travelling,’ she laughs) to Gold Coast libraries in suburbs other than her own.

It’s not that JD doesn’t like her local library (she actually loves it) but she visits it more on Saturday mornings when bus travel isn’t free; then walking to her favourite places.

JD spends several hours in the comfort of the libraries, reading a variety of magazines and newspapers; sometimes using the computers; often checking on books, CDs or DVDs that may be of interest to her.

Occasionally she even phones ahead to book herself a spot for special library talks or presentations. JD also picks up notices of community happenings, and all of this costs her nothing. A day out for free although she admits she enjoys stopping for a cuppa and sandwich when she is away from home for the full day.

JD has bussed to several Gold Coast City libraries including Helensvale, Robina, Southport, Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta—and enjoyed the scenery along the way!

25% funding boost for palliative care programs

Speaking at the launch of National Palliative Care Week at the end of May, Minister for Health Peter Dutton announced $52 million in funding over three years for the National Palliative Care Program. ‘This is fantastic news to receive during National Palliative Care Week,’ said Dr Yvonne Luxford, Chief Executive Officer of Palliative Care Australia. ‘It confirms the future of these important quality improvement and educational programs for a further three years.’

The figure of $52 million represents an increase of 25% from the last triennium, although at this stage the guidelines for allocating these funds is not finalised.

‘This funding boost is most welcome,’ said DrLuxford. ‘Palliative Care Australia looks forward to receiving further de-

tails about the mechanisms for allocating these funds and working with the government to ensure that these valuable national programs are well supported to grow and develop.’

The theme for National Palliative Care Week (2531 May) was‘Palliative care is everyone’s business – let’s work together’. The week celebrated the diverse range of people who work in palliative care and the important role they play in ensuring quality care at the end of life for all.

‘Many of these programs are in workforce support and development, and this announcement fits well with the theme of National Palliative Care Week which has a workforce focus,’ said DrLuxford.

The announcement followed earlier news that

the World Health Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on palliative care which, among other things, calls for countries to ensure that palliative care is embedded in the basic and continuing education and training for all health workers and becomes a core component of health systems.

‘We thank the government for their commitment to palliative care and building a workforce that is able to meet the needs of dying Australians, their families and carers,’ DrLuxford said.

A nine-year long study conducted by Netherlands researchers found that men and women with the highest levels of optimism at the start of the study had the lowest death rates than those in the most pessimistic group.

Considering all factors in-total, the risk of death was 29% lower among highly optimistic men and women. In addition, the most optimistic study participants experienced 77% less likelihood of dying of a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular cause (as compared to the most pessimistic group).

Aged Care Complexity Continues - so it’s time you knew the facts DESPITE the Federal Government’s Living Longer Living Better reforms, the aged care industry continues to be plagued by complexity and uncertainty according to Seasons Private Aged Care CEO, Nick Loudon.

“The aged care reforms aimed at protecting those entering aged care, have resulted in significant uncertainty both in the industry and across the community more broadly; many would be surprised by the costs to the individual associated with accessing government funded nursing homes and inhome care, as the reform changes become effective from 1 July 2014” he said.

“While the reforms allow for the option to pay a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) instead of a lump sum “bond”, it should also be noted that residents who elect to pay the DAPdo not receive any of this back from the nursing home on exit,” he said.

“The impact of the reforms broadly and the Means Testing Formula specifically will differ for every individual , that’s why it’s so important to ensure you understand exactly what you need to pay and what entitlements may be available – take specialist financial

Originally from Victoria, Bob was a firie early in his career and today has a museum-like collection of memorabilia that includes firefighters’ service badges. One inventive three-level model created

Bob himself admits that his ideas can be ‘quirky’.

Bob is happily married to Thelma, a volunteer school librarian who, like Bob, believes in staying active. Bob and Thelma first met when both were nurses in Toowoomba; Bob a psychiatric nurse, a job he loved. Between them they share eight children and, according to a smiling Bob, ‘about 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.’

News from THE TWEED Cataracts - All you need to know WHAT is a Cataract?

A Cataract is a cloudy lens in the eye. This lens is normally clear but as it gets older it becomes cloudier and eventually starts to interfere with the vision. Most people develop significant cataracts after the age of 65 but in some cases they can occur earlier.

At first the cataract

doesn’t affect the vision that much but as it gets worse the vision starts to deteriorate. New glasses may help in the early stages but eventually the lens will become too cloudy to see through properly and cataract surgery will be required.

There are no drops or tablets that can treat cataracts.

What does the surgery involve?

The surgery is relatively quick and painless and is performed under local anaesthetic. You will only be at the day surgery unit for a few hours before retuning home. Your surgeon will remove the cataract and replace it with a clear, artificial lens. The new lens is chosen to ensure

Some people may have a condition called astigmatism. This happens when the front of the eye is shaped a bit like a rugby ball rather than a soccer ball. It creates distortion and requires a more complex and expensive prescription of glasses to improve the vision. The Eye Care Clinic is able to offer cataract surgery that corrects the astigmatism and provides good distance vision without the need for glasses.

How do I know if I have a cataract?

If you have noticed that the vision is no longer as clear as it used to be you should see your Optometrist who will refer you to an Ophthalmologist (Eye surgeon) if required.

Alternatively, your GP can make the referral if you already know that you have cataracts.

Tweed Area Computer Club WELL, this month will continue to have the same core courses as last month.

The same information will be made available, sounds quite dreary. It is not of course, because the attendees move on and find out more information in other classes to expand their knowledge of what can be achieved with the new technology. It is not only the students that evolve the tutors, by the needs of the students, also have to find out more and more; so the cycle goes on. There is a beginning for all but the end is never reached because change keeps on going.

Community cancer information forum A Free Community Cancer Information Forum will be hosted on Friday 20 June 2014 at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre for people affected by melanoma, lung cancer and asbestos related conditions (including mesothelioma) with presentations by some of Australia’s leading medical specialists and researchers in skin cancer and asbestos diseases. This free event is being organised by a number of local non-profit organisations including the Asbestosis and Mesothelioma Support Group (AMSG), Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA) and Cancer Council Queensland. The Forum seeks to increase community understanding of melanoma and asbestos related conditions, while offering support and information to patients, their families, friends and carers.

A presentation on latest research into asbestos related diseases will be made by world renowned Professor Nico van Zandwijk of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute. He will be joined by Dr Keith Horwood and Dr Andrew Dellar who will cover the

impact of benign asbestos related conditions and advances in the treatment of asbestos related conditions including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

The keynote speakers on melanoma care and treatment will be leading oncologist Dr Andrew Hill and Mr Andrew McFadzen (RN) who will provide an overview of clinical trials currently available. The free Forum will include exhibitor stalls who will provide valuable information for patients, their families and friends regarding assistance and support services available. You can talk directly to members of the various treatment and support services that may be of assistance to you. What should I expect from physiotherapy?

To begin, your physio-

therapist will assess your condition, diagnose any problems and help you understand what is wrong.

They will work with you to develop a treatment plan that takes into account your lifestyle, goals, leisure activities, and general health. Throughout the treatment program, we will evaluate your progress at regular intervals and modify treatment and goals when necessary. Wherever possible, we will also work with you to help you learn to manage your condition independently for the longer term.

Do I need a referral?

A doctor’s referral is not necessary to see a continence physiotherapist in private practice, although we frequently work in partnership with your doctor to plan and manage treatment for continence conditions.

A LUXURY sleeper train service that a Japanese rail company will introduce in spring 2017 has an openair deck for passengers to take in the sights and even one car set aside for just a single person or family.

The target customers for JR West’s new sleeper train are recently retired people with money and time on their hands.

“We hope to use this train as a catalyst to promote tourism in the areas it will serve,” the president of JR West Seiji Manabe told reporters. “We will keep the fares as reasonable as possible.”

The sleek sleeper train, which is still in the design phase, will provide passengers with the chance to savor western Japan’s traditional arts, food and scenery. As with Kyushu Railway Co.’s luxury sleeper train, the Nanatsuboshi (Seven Stars), the 10-car train can accommodate 30 passengers. Six of the cars are designated sleeper cars, five of which have three compartments each.

The most expensive car is given over to a luxury suite comprising a bedroom, sitting room, closets and bathing area.

The remaining cars will serve as a dining car, a lounge car and two viewing cars, located at both ends of the train.

On the rear viewing car, an open-air deck will allow passengers to breathe in the fresh air.

JR West say the train will be painted green so that it blends in with the surrounding scenery. The company envisions it operating from the Keihanshin region, an area that covers Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe to the Sea of Japan side, and around the Setouchi region of the main island of Honshu.

New arts festival for Gold Coast THE 10th anniversary of the d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards will spearhead a new arts festival on the Gold Coast.

From 13 June to 13 July the local arts community will join together to provide what is being described by organisers as ‘a feast of art displays’.

The Tallai Country Golf Club will be the venue for a four-week exhibit of the d’Arcy Doyle Sports Art Award for sports-themed paintings and caricatures, while Boomerang Farm in the Mudgeeraba hinterland will host an outdoor display of Sculpture Award entries.

The final twelve days of the 2014 d’Arcy Doyle Arts Festival will include an exhibition of the 400 artworks that are to form the d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards.

This event is set for Mudgeeraba Memorial Hall, together with a programme of twilight entertainment by dancers, vocalists and choirs. Also on show at this location will be the Junior d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards, pro-

viding a display platform for talented young artists.

Pottery and ceramics will be on view in the Mudgeeraba Shopping Centre.

Gaudi or Gawdy?

MOST Aussies probably have never heard of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. However, to residents of Barcelona, his name is synonymous with their city. Gaudi’s style is unique and his buildings instantly recognisable.

He took much of his inspiration from nature, emulating the curves and natural forms found in plants and animals. He abhorred straight lines and flat surfaces. Consequently, his constructions are a strange combination of bends and flowing lines with lavish use of odd colours. Gaudi (pronounced gowDEE) lived from 1852 till 1926.

Much of his work was centred on Barcelona and many buildings in the city are recognisable as his inspiration. Casa Battlo is a multi-storied house in the heart of Barcelona and is open to the public to view his work.

None of its windows are rectangular, doors are not flat, walls are curved, ceilings twist with different textures and finishes, weird shapes emerge from surfaces, chimneys are bent, even the floors are not level. Gaudi’s creative genius would have been a headache for the builders. To traditionalists, his style is totally over-thetop. You either love it or hate it.

His crowning masterpiece is the Sagrada Familia or Temple of the Sacred Family, a huge Roman Catholic church. Work began on this iconic structure in 1882 and it is

still unfinished, but estimates guess at a completion around 2028. Gaudi devoted much of his life to this project and it was less than a quarter complete when he died. At one stage he remarked, “My client is not in a hurry.” Teams of architects have continued the work. It is totally funded by tourist visits and donations, with no support from government or church sources.

The edifice is intended to have a total of 18 spires of varying heights. Their completion will make Sagrada Familia the tallest church building in the world. Construction cranes dominate the skyline. It will have three grand facades. The Nativity Façade and the Passion Façade are complete while the Glory Façade, still undergoing work, will be the largest. They are all heavily ornate in Gaudi’s inimitable style.

The exterior looks somewhat like melting concrete, flowing down under gravity – the work of a madman or a genius?

The interior is in the shape of a Latin cross with five aisles. The detail and complexity are unbelievable and difficult to comprehend. One wonders how a single person could have conceived such a complex design.

Each piece in the puzzle is unique and required individual construction by painstaking artisans using complicated moulds.

JAN Steinbusch has been awarded first prize in the Miniatures category for his oil work titled Still Life with Vase. The occasion was the Royal Queensland Art Society (Gold Coast) Big Art Awards 2014 Opening Night held on May 30. This was the third time in a row that Jan had received this award.

Jan, who has lived on the Gold Coast for four years and who has been painting for some 20 years, is pastpresident of the Miniature Art Society

of Sydney.

Everyone is welcome to view Jan’s winning work as well as the many other Big Art Awards entries until the exhibit ends during the last week of June. Entry is free.

City’s mobile app extends its reach to create a better city REPORTING illegal dumping, an abandoned vehicle, a pothole or a water leak is now easier and faster with the help of the City of Gold Coast’s mobile phone app.

The app was launched in July 2013 and was first used so residents could report graffiti. New functions recently added to the app include abandoned vehicles and shopping trolleys, water leaks, potholes, illegal dumping, street sweeping, park bins, footpaths, street signs and parking.

Mayor Tom Tate said the app had already proved popular, with 2,200 downloads and 1,400 reports logged since July 2013.

“We’re hoping more residents will download the app and use it to report any of these issues in an effort to make our city better,” he said.

“It’s as simple as taking a photo of the abandoned car, or dumped rubbish, or water leak, entering some basic details about it and submitting it.

“The photo, along with its GPS location, is immediately sent to City of Gold Coast. Once the issue has been reviewed (during normal business hours), we will arrange for the necessary action to be taken.

“When customers submit a report, they will receive real time feedback and the ability to view other public reports logged in the area at the same time.

“This app certainly enables residents to contact us more quickly and helps us with our efforts to create a cleaner, safer city.”

Cr Tate said the City’s Local Law officers always investigated reports of abandoned vehicles and determined what action needed to be taken, with officers first establishing if a vehicle was actually abandoned, or left unattended for a valid reason.

“Most abandoned vehicles are removed within a week of being reported,” he said.

In the 2013-14 financial year to date, 2622 abandoned vehicles have been reported, with 22 of these reported via the mobile app since it went live last December.

Cr Tate said the next addition to the app was anticipated to be pest management (wild dogs, vermin, mosquitoes) which could be included later this year.
