Busy week of activities planned for seniors in The Tweed

The final collection of collectives

‘Not only are there several events taking place in Tweed Heads, Banora Point and Murwillumbah but the Tyalgum community will host an old-fashioned concert and singalong, bush poetry and afternoon tea.’ The week’s activities in The Tweed will officially open on Sunday March 16 at 2 p.m. with a ceremony at Banora Point

FOLLOWING is the fourth and final collection of collectives for Seniors Newspaper readers. Although not claiming to be definitive by any stretch of the imagination, we hope you have enjoyed the collection; had fun with it and even used it to your advantage at quiz nights. If you haven’t, maybe someone else has. Chances are that you’ve heard of, or even eaten, escargot (French for snail) but did you know that a nursery for snails is called an escargatoire, which also refers to a group of snails, as do the words rout and walk? Snakes can be found in beds (hopefully their own), dens, knots, nests and pits, with sparrows in a host, tribe or meinie, an old word meaning household, crowd or feudal attendants. Dray and scurry refer to groups of squirrels; chattering, clattering and cloud to starlings, along with congregation and murmuration. Storks come in flights or musterings, but when they are migrating they appear in a phalanx. Gulp, appropriately, is for swallows, but a bank of swans is the correct term when these graceful birds are on the ground and a wedge when they are in flight, otherwise bevy, drift, eyrar or sownder to list just a few alternate choices. Doylt, drift and trip can refer to swine, and ambush and streak to tigers. Trout group in hovers; turkeys in gangs (watch those turkeys!) and rafters; turtles in doles while a group of turtle doves is called a pitying. You would be correct to refer to a gathering of waterfowl as a knob or a raft; weasels in colonies or packs; whales in gams (meaning unrelated whales), herds, mobs or pods (related through family); woodcocks in a fall; woodpeckers in a descent, and wrens in a herd. To end our collection of collectives, sit back and relax as you picture a herd, cohert or zeal of zebra on the grassy plains of Africa.

A FULL program of events in Tweed Shire has been announced for NSW Seniors Week 2014, March 15 to 23. ‘There is a huge range of great events planned for this year, including bus trips, concerts, information sessions and workshops to name a few,’ said Council’s Aged and Disability Development Officer Karen Collins.

Switch off a phone & switch on a wish! DID you know Australia is one of the most phoneaddicted nations in the world? Its true! Research suggests one in 10 people spend up to three hours a day on their mobile phones! That’s over 1,000 hours and more than 45 days every year. So Make-A-Wish has issued a challenge! Switch off your phone for as long as you can during March and get your friends to switch off too. Switch off and raise money to help make even more wishes come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Go to switchoff2014.com.au and register today to switch off a phone in March and switch on wish.

The closing ceremony will be at Murwillumbah Community Centre on Sunday March 23. ‘A Stay Healthy - Stay Active day on Thursday March 20 will be a onestop shop of information, demonstrations, entertainment and presentations at the beautiful Murwillumbah Community Centre,’ Ms Collins continued. ‘As in previous years, the week will be full of fun, information and friendship.’ Copies of the program will be available at Council offices in Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads, as well as in libraries, licensed clubs and community centres. community news The luckiest man alive

James (Jim) Curson

MANY will not only have seen the film The Railway Man but will have friends or relatives who suffered as Japanese prisoners of war. Few of these World War II POWs survive but one, James Curson, is today a sprightly 93. He shares a segment of his intriguing story below. An English farm boy, James met his future wife Dorothy when she became his mother’s home-help. They became firm pals, marrying three years later just as World War II was declared. Jim soon found himself sent off to fight the invading Japanese. Off the island of Singapore, Jim’s ship was bombed. Reported missing, he was presumed dead. Luckily Jim had survived and been taken to Singapore, although it was some time before Dorothy learned of

by Terry Spring

his fate. As the Japanese took control of Singapore, Jim waited in trepidation with the defeated forces. Herded by fierce gun-wielding guards, they were jammed into enclosed steel freight wagons, with no provisions, for the long journey to Thailand. Unbeknown to them, they were about to become slaves; forced to build the 258-mile (415 km) Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, between Thailand and Burma. Desperate to move supplies to their forces fighting the British in Burma, the Japanese needed a railway through the mountains and jungle as there were no roads across the border. Jim was one of thousands of POWs forced to hand-build the track using basic picks and shovels; all walking and hacking their way through the jungle and rock without shoes, hats or uniforms. Treated in a barbarous fashion by their captors, they were completely expendable as prisoners. Days turned to months and months to years. The sadistic soldiers beat and murdered the malnourished POWs who died in their thousands and were buried in the sandy soil. Atom bombs were dropped on Japanese soil and rescued prisoners, Jim included, were no more than near-naked walking skeletons. Back in England, the war over, Dorothy and Jim were reunited but nobody spoke about the horrors he had experienced. Plagued by illness, Dorothy and Jim migrated to Australia with their daughter in 1963 to start afresh. Dorothy died in her 90s. Jim says they shared 68 wonderful years together. Attributing his survival to ‘good luck’, Currumbin resident Jim recently completed his life story. Accordingly, the book is titled Lucky Me.

Gold Coast City reinforces our last line of coastal defence

THE Gold Coast’s sea defences are getting a major boost as the City of Gold Coast starts an extensive program to upgrade sections of the city’s seawalls. The seawalls follow what’s known as the ‘ALine’, our official coastal boundary as defined by the Queensland Government, which runs parallel to the foreshore. Work has begun on replacing a 30-year old section of the wall in Miami, and a new section of wall is underway at Palm Beach. The project is part of the Three Point Plan for Coastal Protection, fast-tracking the implementation of 30

years’ worth of beach protection works under the City’s Ocean Beaches Strategy. Mayor Tom Tate says the investment in upgrading seawalls reflects the priority that the City has always placed on coastal protection and management. “Our seawalls are our city’s last line of defence. They’re a shock absorber that protects our buildings and property on and behind the beachfront during severe storms. This work will further safeguard our coastline, our homes and businesses,” he said. “We’ve put ourselves in

a strong position on the seawall-constructionproject-20762.htmlfor Gold Coast – our more information. beaches and dunes are in great shape, and when our coastal defences are really put to the test, we have a seawall that’s designed to resist a one in 100 year intensity cyclone. We’re investing in getting the work done now so that in extreme weather events, we’ll limit the risk to property and the kind of multimillion dollar losses other coastal cities in the world have had to deal with.” The City’s longpreferred option for seawalls is to maintain a natural dune system, so that the wall is buried below sand most of the time, only becoming exposed after large-scale erosion when sand levels are significantly reduced. The new section of seawall at Miami is next to Thorn Park, Marine Parade. Work has begun north from Santa Monica Road to protect a section of coastline along Marine Parade. After the seawall has been buried by sand at Miami, the foreshore will be reinstated with paths, furniture and vegetation similar to those at the northern end of Marine Parade. Work is expected to be complete by June 2014. Visit the Seawall construction project page at goldcoast.qld.gov.au/ March 2014 - Gold Coast Seniors - Page 3

community news Next steps for Gallipoli 2015 ballot

42,582 applications were received from Australians planning to attend the Dawn Service at Gallipoli in 2015, marking 100 years since the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops during the First World War. The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson, said the government’s contracted ticket provider would now begin the process of confirming applications. “Ticketek will review and remove any duplicate, incomplete or incorrect applications before the ballot is drawn. The ballot draw is automated and comprises of four cascades, providing some preference for direct descendants and veterans with qualifying or overseas service,” Senator Ronaldson said. “Outside the ballot, there are places for Australian First World War widows who will be included as part of Australia’s official representative group and 400 places for secondary school children and their chaperones.” Senator Ronaldson said all ballot applicants, successful and unsuccessful, will be notified of the outcome before Anzac Day 2014. “Successful applicants are encouraged to make and pay for all travel arrangements as soon as they receive confirmation of their success in the ballot. This needs to include flights, accommodation,

transport and travel insurance. Proof of travel such as an airline ticket or tour package must be provided to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs by 25 October 2014 in order to receive attendance passes,” Senator Ronaldson said. “Those who are unsuccessful, and who elected to be on the waitlist, will be notified of any passes that may become available from those who can no longer attend, up until 31 March 2015. “Alternatively, unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to visit Gallipoli at another time in 2015, attend another Anzac Day service overseas such as Villers-Bretonneux in France, or watch the broadcast of the Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux services live on the ABC on Anzac Day.” Senator Ronaldson said a full program of activities would be rolled out over the Anzac Centenary period 2014-2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the First World War. He encouraged communities across Australia to get involved by applying to their local federal Member of Parliament for funding under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. There is funding of up to $125,000 per electorate which needs to be applied for before 30 May 2014. 100 years of fundraising RED Cross is celebrating its centenary in Australia this year and during March the annual Red Cross Calling Appeal will mark one hundred years of fundraising by Red Cross volunteers right throughout the country. Australia joined the growing international Red Cross movement soon after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The Roma Branch of Red Cross in outback Queensland was typical of the hundreds of new Red Cross branches that opened up around the country to support the war effort. Local Red Cross volunteer Myrtle Flower reportedly wore out four pairs of shoes walking house to house to collect money

to purchase a Red Cross field ambulance that was later sent to Egypt. h t t p : / / c e n t e n a r y. redcross.org.au/groups/ determined-doorknocker Most of the enthusiastic, young Australian soldiers that were recruited in 1914 were first sent to Egypt for training before being shipped to Gallipoli in 1915. For Australia, the First World War still remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, 60,000 were killed and 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner. During World War 11 Red Cross also volunteers worked tirelessly providing medical sup-

plies, refrigeration for military hospitals and comfort for injured soldiers, food parcels for prisoners of war and much needed funds for air raid victims. Red Cross still relies heavily on the generosity of individuals and community groups to raise funds for its vital work. Today Red Cross runs a huge, diverse range of programs with a network of 90 regional offices, 180 shops and first aid training all dedicated to helping vulnerable people. During Red Cross Calling local members, supporters, schools and community groups come out in force to conduct collections or organise fundraising activities. Schools, universities and

colleges are also great supporters of Red Cross Calling, conducting collections at shopping centres or doorknocking in their local areas. To make a donation, or to find out how you can get involved in Red Cross Calling go to the website at redcrosscalling.org.au or phone 1800 008 831.

community news Become an Active and Healthy Ambassador

Col Hart

THE Active and Healthy Program was initiated in 2005 by The City of Gold Coast and has created

new lifestyles and interests for many residents of all ages. Colin Hart has been on his

own health journey over the last 18 months. Through participating in the $3 Aqua Fit and MAD

classes at Southport, Col has lost over 38kgs in weight and has a new lease on life. Previously, Colin was basically wheelchair bound, in pain on constant medication and very overweight to someone who now gets the most out of each and every day and why is determined to let others know that they too can make a change. Due to his enthusiasm and commitment to encourage more people to improve their lives and get active and healthy, Col became the Gold Coast’s first Active and Healthy Ambassador. Retirees more comfortable about super returns

RETIREES are feeling more confident about their retirement income as a result of improving returns from their superannuation, a new report has found. The 2nd Seniors Sentiment Index released by National Seniors and commissioned by Challenger, gauged 2,000 older Australians’ views on different aspects of their

life as well as their views of society as a whole. The overall Seniors Sentiment Index increased from 66% in 2012 to 72% in 2013, reflecting growing positivity from seniors about their finances, health and social wellbeing. National Seniors Australia chief executive, Michael O’Neill, said the number of

Baby Boomers Reject Biased Advice

MANY Baby Boomers are finding it difficult to obtain unbiased professional advice as they plan for and enter retirement. With over 85% of advisers tied to financial institutions it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain independent advice on the vast range of decisions retirees need to make to safeguard their retirement finances. To address this situation, Australians in Retirement will be conducting a Baby Boomers Finance Forum as a free community service to local Baby Boomers. Well know financial commentator, Noel Whittaker, will open the Forum and discuss the “Ten Mistakes a Retired Investor Can Make.” Mr Robert Grover, AIR Gold Coast president said: “As baby boomers approach their retirement they are faced with some of the most important financial decisions of their life. A wrong decision could lead to a retiree paying tax they could otherwise avoid or not being aware that they are eligible for a part pension. Such mistakes can have a catastrophic effect on their long-term retirement finances.” Five specialist speakers will address the Forum on a range of topics including using superannuation to eliminate tax, details of different forms of investment plus Centrelink and estate planning considerations. One of the most important topics for people seeking advice will be how to find a professional, independent financial planner. “Importantly, we will not have any speakers from financial institutions.” Mr Grover said. “All speakers will be independent professionals providing unbiased relevant information for recent retirees.” The Baby Boomers Finance Forum will be held from 9:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday 8 th March at the Broadbeach Seniors Centre, 23 T E Peters Dve (cnr Havana Key), Broadbeach. Mr Grover said: “All members of the public are invited. We are providing this Forum as a free community service for people who have recently retired or are planning their retirement.” As seating is limited, please register your attendance or for further information, contact 0412 666 839 or AIRBBForumMarch2014@gmail.com. Australians in Retirement is the business name for The Association of Independent Retirees, the peak body representing the interests of retirees who are self -funded or in receipt of a part pension. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

retirees who were confident that their superannuation would be adequate in retirement increased from 44% in 2012 to 61% in 2013. “This is a result of sustained recovery in equity markets and a rising share market producing better returns,” Mr O’Neill said. But while confidence in retirement income had increased in the past 12 months, senior Australians were not so optimistic about their financial wellbeing over the next five years. Paul Rogan, Challenger chief executive of distribution, product and marketing, said: “It’s hard for retirees to have long term confidence in their super when so much of it is at the mercy of share market cycles. “Government and industry must work together to deliver better super outcomes for our people once they’re retired and living off their savings.” In the social wellbeing stakes, the report found a

notable increase in satisfaction with the Australian political system, with those ‘at least somewhat satisfied’ increasing from 21% to 30%. “This may be attributed to the survey being conducted within two months of the federal election and the result of a change in government but overall it is noticeable there is still considerable dissatisfaction with our political system,” Mr O’Neill said. The proportion of seniors who felt ‘very’ or ‘somewhat satisfied’ with the government’s level of spending in the health system increased from 17% in 2012 to 24% in 2013 which also reflected small improvements in satisfaction ratings in being able to get a doctor’s appointment when necessary. The 2nd Seniors Sentiment Index follows the inaugural Seniors Sentiment Index which was released in December 2012. Media Release: National Seniors

community news National organ and tissue donation and transplantation rates continue to rise

Sizzling sausages and sunny smiles

Sunny smiles from volunteers and wafting aromas greeted passersby at the Burleigh Heads Lions Club’s monthly sausage sizzle.

IT wasn’t easy to walk past the Burleigh Heads Lions Club’s sausage sizzle stand at the Feb 23 Burleigh Heads Sunday Market, with wafting aromas filling the air and sunny smiles lighting up volunteers’ faces, but that was the whole idea. Money raised from market sizzles goes towards supporting the community and helping local charities. And what can be better than that? The Burleigh Heads Lions Club holds a sausage sizzle at each monthly Sunday market located beachside in scenic Burleigh Heads. Why not pop along and say ‘hello’—and buy a sizzling sausage to help support worthy causes?

IN 2013 an additional 314 Australian lives were transformed through the gift of an organ transplant due to the continued growth in donation outcomes since 2009 under the national reform program. Last year, Australia achieved its highest organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes according to official figures released recently by the Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry (ANZOD) and the Organ and Tissue Authority. “Last year, 1,122 Australian transplant recipients benefited from the generosity of 391 organ donors and their families who supported their decision to become an organ donor, said Ms Yael Cass, Chief Executive Officer of the Organ and Tissue Authority. “This means that one in four of the 1,122 organ transplant recipients in 2013 received their transplant because of the growth in organ dona-

tion outcomes in Australia since 2009, said Ms Cass. Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia all achieved their highest ever annual organ donation outcomes in 2013. The breakdown of donors in 2013 was: Victoria – 110; New South Wales - 102; Queensland - 77; Western Australia - 47; South Australia - 34; Tasmania - 8; the Northern Territory – 7; and, the Australian Capital Territory - 6. The generous decision of these tissue donors in 2013 allowed the transplant of 6,248 tissue grafts, including bone, tendon, heart valve and skin grafts, improving the lives of 3,691 tissue transplant recipients. “Australia’s steady progress is due to both the dedicated DonateLife staff providing specialist organ and tissue donation services, and to our generous donor families who are supported to make the

decision to honour their loved one’s wishes and to proceed with donation, said Ms Cass. Ms Cass said that family awareness of donation decisions also remains a key factor in improving donation outcomes. “While clinical reform is essential, family awareness and discussion of organ donation also supports increasing consent rates. When families know the donation decision of a loved one, they are more likely to endorse donation proceeding. Age is not a barrier to becoming an organ and tissue donor. One person can transform the lives of up to ten people and significantly improve the life of many more. Research in 2013 shows that 74% of Australians aged over 65 are willing to donate but 36% assume they are too old to do so. 62% of people aged over 65 have decided to be a donor, but 48% had not

discussed this decision with family members in the past 12 months. If a situation arises where donation is possible and consent has been confirmed with your family, a medical practitioner will assess what can be gifted for

transplant. It is important to discuss organ donation with your family so they know what your wishes are. This is because your family will be asked to confirm your decision. For more information: www.donatelife.gov.au

DO you suffer from painful Plantar Fasciitis, tired aching feet, Arch pain or swollen feet? Sole Integrity is proud to offer FS 6, which is a compression sleeve, designed to provide relief for the aforementioned conditions. How it works: FS 6 uses Patent Pending Compression Zones to lift the plantar Fascia and move excess fluids and blood out of the foot and heel to reduce swelling and pain. FS 6 keeps the Plantar Fascia ligaments gently stretched whilst increasing blood flow to damaged tissues in the foot and heel, resulting in less pain and inflammation. FS

6 has 6 zones of compression built into each sleeve that supports foot structure and increases blood flow needed for healing. FS6 Compression Foot Sleeves compress the ankle and foot to help relieve the painful symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Unlike bulky and expensive “night splints,” the sleeves slip on easily, providing varying compression zones to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and support healing. The lightweight sleeves can be worn while sleeping to reduce morning heel pain or during the day, under socks for continuous support, relief and protection. The sleeves gently lift the

have over twenty years’ experience in this area. This specialist Aged Care Business guides you through the whole process from how to get an ACAT assessment, researching facilities on your behalf, identifying and selecting the best possible Aged Care placement choices based upon your family requirements and providing you with financial options as to how best fund the Accommodation Bond and the ongoing fees and charges. Robyn Clelland, Principal and Founder, says most people are concerned about their Centrelink benefits and Pension Payments and whether these will be maintained once someone goes into care. “We strive to maximise all Pension and Vet Affairs benefits for our clients, and in some cases have increased their entitlements”. Mrs. Clelland says the most common question they get asked is about the family home. “This is often a cause of extreme worry for our older folks. Naturally there is a huge emotional attachment to their home, and they can feel pressured into making a hasty sale to fund the entry into a residence. We like to hold a family meeting to discuss all of the options. Many times, retaining the family home is a better outcome”. Baby Boomers have to consider Aged Care more and more, as their parents are living well into their

eighties and nineties and even longer! Mrs. Clelland says it’s never too early to start thinking about your family’s circumstances and be better prepared for the future. “This is one of the important differences in utilising the services of a fully qualified Specialist Financial Adviser in the aged care placement process. I’m able to recommend strategies and financial instruments which may dramatically improve the overall outcome for the placement of your loved elder.” For more information about Nannas Planners, please phone 0458 881 422 or visit www.nannas planners.com.au

Many older people too sick to retire

NEW figures out recently show that the vast majority of older workers with chronic health conditions are on low incomes and cannot afford to retire. The second study for National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre (NSPAC), headed by Professor Deborah Schofield of the University of Sydney, shows 80% of those aged between 65 and 74 with ongoing health problems are earning $500 a week or less. Only 2% earn more than $1,500 per week. This is in sharp contrast to the 54% in the same age group but without chronic health problems who earn $500 a week or less and the 12% who earn $1,500 a week or more. National Seniors chief executive, Michael O’Neill, said the new report ‘Working beyond 65 – what’s realistic?’ backs up existing evidence that it’s in the interests of both governments and individuals to have older people working longer – if they are willing and able to do so. “Staying in the workforce past age 65 lightens the load on taxpayers,” O’Neill said. “It also helps older people enjoy a higher standard of living in retirement and gives them the social interaction of the workplace which has its own mental health benefits. “If they have chronic health conditions but can manage to keep working, they

will be better able to afford the medical care and equipment they need. “Unfortunately, many older people in poor health but still working believe they will never be able to afford to retire.” Flexible working hours or workstation modification may help an arthritis sufferer stay at work beyond the traditional retirement age of 65, he said. “But further preventative measures for a range of health problems are perhaps the best solution to keeping older people at work so they can better fund their own retirements.” Other findings include: men are almost three times as likely to be employed past retirement age as women; arthritis is the largest single contributor to the loss of full time employment, and those with other conditions including back problems, diabetes and heart disease are twice as likely to be out of the workforce than those people with no such health worries. NSPAC also released a report in November last year containing research headed by Prof Schofield. The report ‘A Widening gap: The financial benefits of delaying retirement’ found workers in their early 60s who had a chronic health condition had better retirement savings and a higher level of wealth than those who had quit work. Discover easy movement in bed NOW! Wonder Sheet fitted sheet; Increases bed mobility, Reduces pain and discomfort For many suffering an illness, the basic human function of turning over in bed can be agony. Neeki has developed a unique style of fitted sheet called the ‘Wonder Sheet’, which creatively combines a gorgeous glossy charmeuse satin in the centre of the sheet and either 100% Egyptian Cotton or 50/50 Poly/Cotton at the ends. ‘The Wonder sheet’ is an effective therapeutic tool because it enables the user to turn over with more ease by gripping with their feet on the bottom fabric which then gives them the leverage to move their bottom and hip area more easily on the slippery satin fabric, which then enables them to roll over or swing in and out of bed. The Benefits: • It can compliment existing equipment, such as a hoist or a bed stick because using them together will require less physical effort which will reduce stress on the body and increase the effectiveness of both the equipment and ‘The Wonder Sheet’. • It can save on other equipment such as a slide sheet, which is used to turn and move a person in bed. The ‘Wonder Sheet’ fitted sheet

is non clinical and more comfortable and luxurious than a slide sheet. • The ‘Wonder Sheet’ makes the moving and handling for the carer or therapist much easier because there is less physical strain on their body. • It Improves health and well being by reducing the potential for bed sores and by improving circulation because the user can move more readily.

There is a story about the Wonder Sheet. It involves a daughter who was thinking of ways to help her dad move more easily in bed. He has Parkinson’s disease and transferring in bed was becoming more difficult. The creative juices started to flow and many samples later the Wonder Sheet fitted sheet was born. The ‘Wonder Sheet’ has helped 100’s of people by increasing their mobility in bed.

Support for Grandparents and Kinship Carers who are Full-Time Carers of Children MYTIME for Grandparents is a support program, located on the Gold Coast for grandparents and kinship carers who are the primary carers, whether by formal or informal arrangement of children up to 18 years of age. The MyTime for Grandparents program is a vital support network that provides opportunities for grandparents and kinship carers to come together to support one another, share ideas and learn more about the range of services in their areas. It allows them the time and sanctuary to look after their own needs, build confidence and form long lasting friendships. There are currently eight MyTime for Grandparents support groups across Queensland, all of which have proven to be an invaluable resource for attendees. “Since joining MyTime for Grandparents my life is so much better. This group has shown me that I’m not alone and that my situation is not hopeless. In fact, with the group’s support and guidance my situation has been greatly improved. I wish that I had taken the steps to join MyTime for Grandparents earlier” said one grandparent who joined one of the Queensland groups back in 2012.

The facilitator for MyTime for Grandparents on the Gold Coast, Marjorie Graham, said she is looking forward to starting the group again and if necessary a Play Helper will be provided to assist young children coming with their grandparents. Marjorie said “There are a number of unique challenges that grandparents and kinship carers face as fulltime carers of children so it is really important that they can connect with and gain support from others who understand what they’re experiencing. Most importantly, grandparents can feel grief that they have to relinquish the grandparent role they really enjoyed, in order to go back to taking on a parenting role, so peer support can really help dealing with these kinds of feelings.” The Parenting Research Centre is the national coordinator of MyTime for Grandparents on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Playgroup Queensland is proud to be able to deliver this service to eight regions throughout the state. They are: Gold Coast, Ipswich, Brisbane, Logan, Moreton Bay Region, Toowoomba, Cairns and Townsville. On the Gold Coast, the group will meet every fortnight at the Labrador

Community Centre, 57 Billington St, Labrador. The next meeting will be held Thursday, 6 February from 9.30am to 11.30am. For more information, contact Marjorie Graham on 07 5527 3034 or marjieg1@bigpond. com

RSL Care Christmas Appeal: help us reach $100,000 THE community has dug deep this year to support RSL Care residents like Second World War hero Archie Wilson to get more out of life. RSL Care CEO, Mr Craig Mills said the 2013 Christmas Appeal had raised more than $66,000 dollars so far. “I want to thank everyone who has donated to the Christmas Appeal,” he said. “This is a fantastic outcome for residents as funds raised will go directly to provide meaningful activities to increase social connection and participation with the outside world, increase self-esteem and reduce anxiety and depression. “Activities such as music groups, gardening groups, Zumba classes, special outings and pet therapy are just a few things donation’s to the Christmas Appeal will provide. also provide things such as a haircut, new shoes or clothing, to our residents in need or alone.” Every year RSL Care provides services to over 25,000 people through the efforts of 4000 staff and

volunteers. Donations allow us to do those things to make life better for people like Archie. “Archie’s service during World War Two contributed to the defence of the basic freedoms and comforts we enjoy today,” Mr Mills said. “At 92 years-old Archie lives at RSL Care Fairview Retirement Community, Pinjarra Hills, Queensland. “He is a true hero with a remarkable story of courage and survival under fire and of an enduring optimism and love for life and without the support of the community; we cannot go the extra mile.” Mr Mills said it wasn’t too late to donate to the Christmas Appeal, as RSL Care hoped to reach its target of $100,000. “The appeal is still open so it’s not too late to donate to this worthy cause,” he said. To make a donation visit the RSL Care website and donate online: http://www.rslcare.com.au/Donation.cfm or call Danila on (07) 3251 6285.

community news A perfect day for art en plein air grandchildren and enjoys life. The Royal Queensland Art Society (RQAS) is located at 25 Broadbeach Blvd, Broadbeach and is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone 5592 0440; email: rqasgc@rqasgoldcoast. com.

AN enthusiastic group of artists from the Royal Queensland Art Society at Broadbeach took advantage of a beautiful day to meet at Mick Shamburg Park, Miami Hill and paint en plein air, generally translated as ‘in the open air’. Lifelong artist Lynette Melsom, who enjoys painting ‘all subjects and using all mediums, with the subject depicting the medium’ was amongst the group.

‘I am a realist artist,’ Lynette said, ‘with a yen to do abstract work although I just can’t make the switch as yet. Originally I learned from the late Alan Martin of Melbourne, who gave me a great grounding in observation and plein air painting.’ Lynette says she was humbled when she was asked some years ago to write an article for Australian Artist magazine. A Burleigh Waters

Humour with words APROSDOKIANS are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and is often humorous. Winston Churchill loved them. Here are a few. Where there’s a will, I want to be in it. The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but it’s still on my list. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong. We never really grow up; we only learn how to act in public. War does not determine who is right only who is left. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

They begin the evening news with ‘Good Evening,’ then proceed to tell you why it isn’t. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. Behind every successful man is his woman. Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with. I used to be indecisive. Now I’m not so sure. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. And.....finally: I’m supposed to respect my elders, but it’s getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Warriors Old WARRIORS old, humbly we see you in your day and place A fine batch of fellows patiently standing in wait Full of courage and strong in spirit, ready to fight Resisting the force of battle by day and by night. It is sad that life must take its toll on you anew Doing harm no enemy however strong could ever do Forsaking those things that made you so bold Leaving the memories of glory and distress never told. Brave men of the battle field, now you are few Thank goodness people know what you went through There is your eyes is a touch of sadness and regret Some things we remember, others it’s better to forget. A grateful nation decreed ANZAC Day as yours Time to put all your best clobber on and medals galore The chance to meet your mates and reminisce Your fame and fortune in a later generation will be greatly missed. The Leylands make the move to Maleny AUSTRALIAN travel show pioneers the Leyland Brothers enthralled television audiences every Sunday evening for decades. Mike and Mal took armchair travellers all over Australia with adventurous real life experiences that remain unrivalled today. Sadly, Mike Leyland passed away in 2009 but

Mal is alive and well and taking up residence in Maleny. Mal and his wife of 44 years Laraine will continue to travel but when they are not on the road they plan to relax on the Sunshine Coast. Mal says they had always wanted to live in Maleny. “We have lived an almost self sufficient lifestyle on a 25 acre property in Glen Innes for the past 12 years but looking after cows, goats, pigs and fruit trees has become a bit of chore,” he says. “We opted for a new home in Living Gems Sunstone Gardens Resort. It gives us the best of both worlds, a country village lifestyle with holiday resort amenities. Sunstone Gardens is designed with active over 50s’ in mind. “Architect designed two and three bedroom homes are priced from $270,000. Buyers can work with the onsite designer to create their dream home by adding their signature style to the existing designs. “We had firm ideas about what we wanted. We liked the spacious living and dining areas, Laraine love

the well designed kitchen. We opted for two bedrooms with a study and under house storage. We have an alfresco area so we can enjoy outdoor dining and entertaining. “There are no entry fees, exit fees or council rates. Homeowners retain all of their capital gain if they choose to sell and the site fees are the lowest of any comparable resorts,” Mal says. Mal is not only a pioneer traveller he is a prolific writer with a string of books to his credit. His latest work is an autobiography that is due for release in August. It promises to be a big hit as anyone who grew up in Australia instantly recognises the Leyland name and recalls the catchy Leyland Brothers’ signature tune.

Laraine says their new home at Living Gems Sunstone Gardens Resort is the beginning of the next chapter in our lives. “Mal will be able to write more and I can proof read his efforts,” she says. “We are looking forward starting the day with a stroll in the grounds, a swim in the heated pool or a workout in the gym. There’s a country club, a bowling green and cinema. The secure, pet friendly estate has onsite management to take care of the upkeep and there is room to store our motorhome,” she says. For more information about Sunstone Gardens email sunstonesales @living gems.com.au or freecall 1800 193 177.

His cardiology training was undertaken at The Royal Brisbane Hospital and The Prince Charles

community news Love Songs at heart of show

Romance, a concert of orchestral music

DISCOVER the romance of time-honoured orchestral music performed in concert by talented musicians from the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra. The story of boy-meets-girl, Romance begins with the 1st Movement of Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony. The fiery Habenera from Bizet’s Carmen and A Little Night Music (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik) for Strings by Mozart then embrace the blossoming courtship. Faure’s Pavane and the Theme from Cinema Paradiso by movie composer Enio Morricone follow before it’s time to meet the in-laws. This encounter did not end well for Romeo and Juliet but hopefully the couple in Romance will make it through, even with Prokofiev’s music Montagues and Capulets setting the scene. All love, however, goes through rough patches, a prime example revealed in music from Miss Saigon. In conjunction with the Photo Arts Club a weekend workshop is proposed for April covering Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop Elements.

The computer club is located in the South Tweed Sports Club 4 Minjungbal Drive, South Tweed in a great air conditioned environment. Assistance is offered to people wishing to obtain their first computer with courses from absolute beginners to the more advanced. The tutors work on a voluntary basis and get fulfilment from passing on their knowledge to help others using the PC’s and Apple Mac Minis. People can join at any time but if they require more direct information they can attend the next “sign on” day on Friday 28 March 2014 at 11:30pm. Further information about the club can be obtained by visiting the club’s web site at http:// www.tact.org.au or contacting Jenny on 07 5524 3057.

GOLD COAST

Northern Suburbs has plenty to offer

EXPLORE the northern suburbs of the Gold Coast! Gold Coast/Tweed Seniors Newspaper has introduced this new section highlighting the fast growing vibrant northern suburbs of the coast after requests from some of our readers who live in Helensvale and Coomera asking for an opportunity to send in their community notices and photographs to appear in our paper. In response to their requests we will over the coming months showcase some of the products, businesses and services which are available in the area, and bring you stories of interest on local older people who reside here. If you haven’t visited the Upper Coomera area, Oxfordford, Hope Island, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, Harbourtown, Helensvale or Paradise Point mark it in your diary to come up and meet some of your northern neighbours and see why they love living where they live. When asked by our Seniors Newpspaer what local residents liked about living in this area, various answers were given such as, the convenience of the express Airtrain service which operates from Helensvale, Coomera and Ormeau to Brisbane. The area is well serviced by local buses.

Many people frequent the recently opened modern Community Centres at Coomera and Helensvale, where seniors groups are welcome to avail themselves of the many discounted activities through the Active and Healthy Program. There’s the many shopping centres, providing easy parking, excellent medical facilities, a wide choice of shops and supermarkets with many senior friendly taverns, cafes and clubs offering great lunches. Outdoor dining is popular at Paradise Point which is opposite the beautiful parklands. Sanctuary Cove is well known for its holiday atmosphere. Restaurants and cafes with water views provide a relaxing atmosphere after a wander around the many boutiques and gift shops. Retirement lifestyle opportunities abound in the area and with so much more to the northern suburbs, keep an eye out for this special feature each month to stay updated on what’s happening up north. Community notices and photographs from seniors groups are welcome. Email them to editor@seniorsnewspaper.com.au or post to GCT Seniors, P O Box 1062, Tewantin Q. 4565 by the 30th of each month.

Helensvale Probus Club

President Bev and Foundation member Florence Dury who had the privilge of cutting the cake

OUR First meeting for the year, was very successful with President Bev welcoming her members and the many visitors. The theme for the day was Valentines Day, and Deidre and her team had

the table set appropriately, as we have come to know. Thankyou team. Guest speaker on the day was Debby Cox who has appeared previously, Debby was able to bring members up to date on her

work in the Congo Republic, and the Chimp Sanctuary Tchimpounga and in general the current work being carried out on the project. Debby has devoted her life to the well being of the Great Apes and to the Chimpanzee in particular now for some 20 years. With the AGM just around the corner, there will be a change in some positions, to those who have carried out their duties thus far, many thanks, and to those coming in, congratulations and enjoy. Friday the 28th will have seen another wonderful luncheon come picnic at Santa Barbara. The Helensvale Probus Club has many aspects, and activities including Marjong, Tai Chai, Walk-

ing Club, and above all friendship, available to its members now and future, so do please feel welcome to come along on the second Friday of each Month at the Seniors Hall at Helensvale by contacting Marie 5573 0401 or Bev at 5580 3645.

Stop in for a coffee at Paradise Point

PARADISE Point is aptly named as it is a truly delightful area of the northern suburbs of the Gold Coast. Whatever the season it is so pleasant to visit. Stroll along the foreshores of the bay and watch the boats and children playing in the park. Café 7 is the ideal place to meet friends and family, located at Shop 42 on the Esplanade, (next door to the Bendigo Bank) the quirky olde world atmosphere of Café 7 is matched by good, old fashioned service, great coffee and fabulous food. There are antiques to admire, and great home-

made cakes to satisfy the sweet tooth. Indulge, relax and enjoy the ambience and broadwater views. Breakfast is served all day from 6.30am, with the $7.50 breakfast special available until 10am. A delicious and extensive menu for lunch as well as a 2 course special which includes a glass of wine for only $18.50 per person. In a collection of vignettes, audiences journey from ancient legends to contemporary tales of courage, from the highest heavens to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom. Shen Yun is traditional Chinese culture as it was meant to be experienced. Dozens of dancers in daz-

Seasons honours past residents with memorial garden CURRENT residents and family members of passed residents of Seasons Private Aged Care at Waterford West gathered today to official open the new Reflection Garden Memorial for residents who have passed. According to Seasons Waterford Community Manager, Barbara Booth, the ceremonial garden commemorates past residents and provides a place for current residents, staff and

families to work through their grief. “When a resident passes away, it impacts staff and other residents and this garden provides a way to formally acknowledge their loss and reduce their levels of anxiety and grief,” Barbara said. “The garden which consists of beautiful water features has white stones with the names of each resident who has passed arranged around it. “From today, each time a resident passes, a ritual to remember the resident will be held to allow family, friends and staff to

name a white stone and place it in the beautiful garden. “It is a tranquil setting and the named white stones convey the message of strength, stability, remembrance and joy,” she said. Barbara said the concept of the Reflection Garden was conceived by Seasons residents, friends and families who were looking for a way to remember their loved ones. “The concept began very small, but with the help and support of the local community it has grown

into a beautiful garden for reflection,” Barbara said. A memorial plaque naming the garden and dedicating it to the residents of Seasons Waterford West was unveiled by daughters of long term past residents, Gaye Keir and Carole Dunn and current resident representative, Mary Torr. The unveiling of the reflection garden was attended by more than 50 Seasons residents, staff, families and friends with afternoon tea and live entertainment held afterwards.

Eye-catcher in the sky IS it a bird? Is it a plane? We know it’s not Superman so what is it? If you guessed kite you would be right but is there more to this big-eyed, redribbed creature with tentacles shooting upwards from the top of its head than meets the eye? Snapped flying over Burleigh Heads beach, perhaps it’s best not to over-analyse but to simply enjoy the creative nature of this airborne eyecatcher.

It’s lights out for the reef EARTH Hour was founded by WWF in Sydney in 2007 and has now been embraced by 7001 cities and 152 nations across the globe. And in 2014, Earth Hour will focus attention on one of the world’s most iconic and threatened places: Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. As always, Earth Hour only works if you’re part of it. So we’re launching a special Earth Hour television event with Channel Ten to reveal the true story of what’s happening to the Great Barrier Reef due to climate change and more. Then, at 8.30pm, we’ll turn out our lights to make a stand for our reef. On Saturday 29th March, Earth Hour supporters will get together at small and large gatherings around the country. We’ll tune in to our must-see TV special, before turning out the lights to remind the world that it’s lights out for the Great Barrier Reef, if we don’t stand up to protect it. Could compression stockings help you? COMPRESSION stockings are specialised hosiery items important in making life easier, and more comfortable, for anyone who has venous disorders such as oedema, phlebitis or thrombosis. Venous disorders (or disease) are relatively common and refer to conditions related to, or caused by, veins that become diseased or abnormal. If you or someone you know has a need for compression stockings, which use stronger elastics than traditional dress or athletics stockings and socks, you will be glad to read that Walk on Wheels, centrally located in Tweed Heads, not only has a full range of compression stockings but a large stock on hand. Open weekdays to the public, Walk on Wheels’ wellknown friendly and comprehensive service also includes two qualified staff members who have been purposely trained to measure and fit compression stockings, thus providing clients with the optimum products for their needs and circumstances. Walk on Wheels also specialises in a variety of medical mobility aids, for purchase or hire. Carole, Wendi

and Andrew are dedicated to ensuring that an extensive range of quality products is available to cover all needs. Prices are competitive and home delivery is an important part of the service too. Carole, Andrew and Wendi also repair mobility aids, on the spot whenever possible: adjusting walker brakes (for free) and repairing punctures, or whatever is required. They also take the time to explain safe product operation to clients. Walk on Wheels is a sub-contract supplier with Department of Veteran Affairs in northern New South Wales and southeast Queensland. They also supply to Queensland Health under the Mass scheme, New South Wales Health through the Enable scheme and Transitional Care. Walk on Wheels also has strong community links to Tweed Palliative Support and the Red Cross at Palm Beach. Walk on Wheels, 29 Boyd Street,Tweed Heads. Phone (07) 5536 8841 or drop in for a chat. News from THE TWEED Letters a rare insight into Tweed life a century ago Kean said the letters, many almost 120 years old, were written by the children of Joshua and Gertrude Bray, early settlers on the Tweed. ‘The letters have been passed down through generations of Bray family descendents and were ultimately given to Carolyn Barnby, a great granddaughter of Joshua and Gertrude,’ Ms Kean said. ‘Ms Barnby then offered the fragile and precious items to the Museum collection. ‘Wonderfully detailed and candid, the letters date between 1895 and 1902 and are a significant inclusion to the collection, as preparations are made to reopen the Museum after its multi-milliondollar expansion,’ Ms Kean continued. Joshua and Gertrude Bray were pioneer settlers in the Tweed. Their home Kynnumboon was named by Joshua after a local

Aboriginal name associated with the area. The parish near the original home, just outside Murwillumbah, still carries the name. Almost all of the 60 letters in the tin were written at Kynnumboon by Joshua and Gertrude’s children and sent to their brother Frank while he was at boarding school in Brisbane and Gatton and, also, during his voyage to South Africa (at age 16) to work alongside older brother Teddie. Over the past three months, Museum volunteer Christine Stratigos has spent many hours carefully transcribing the letters’ contents. FEELING GOOD

dent n e p e d In g in y a t S and Innovative approach to pain

PAIN sufferers are increasingly embracing natural therapies to free themselves from the constant pain in their feet, knees, hips and

lower back, a leading podiatry practice says. Hip to Toe, is experiencing strong demand for its innovative approach that treats the root of

the pain to provide long-term relief. Founder and owner Matt Maguire uses Foot Mobilisation Techniques (FMT) as

an alternative to orthotics. ‘‘FMT is a gentle, hands-on treatment method combining the science of X-ray

analysis with manual therapies, reducing the need for orthotic inlays, drugs and surgery. By correcting misaligned joints, the feet can work as nature intended,’’ Mr Maguire said. ‘‘I discovered FMT after a podiatrist treated a severe and persistent knee problem after every other health care practitioner had failed. It turned out the knee problem was coming from the feet, but no one else had thought to look there. They were always more concerned with masking the symptoms rather than treating the underlying cause.”

IF you need an interpreter to contact City of Gold Coast for you, please call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450. Please provide TIS with the language you require and ask TIS to telephone City of Gold Coast on 1300 694 222. Business hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Matt Maguire is now passionate about helping people stay active for longer by freeing them from pain in their feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back. ‘‘It is incredibly rewarding to see the smile on a patient’s face when they realise that pain and orthotics are no longer holding them back, and that they can return to leading an active and healthy lifestyle again,’’ Mr Maguire said. “It’s not just about giving people an alternative to orthotics, it’s about getting the foot to work the way it

is meant to. When the foot works the way it is meant to, then the heels, knees and hips can work the way they are meant to and we can minimise the detrimental effects of arthritis, and hip and knee replacements.” Gold Coast Seniors readers will be offered a complimentary, no obligation consultation (usually $95) to see if Foot Mobilisation can help them. For further information visit www.hiptotoe.com.au or call 5571 1777. Hip To Toe, Suite 2a, 34 High St, Southport, Phone 5571 1777.

Need help hearing, sound barrier broken with the Pocketalker WHEN Wally Eaglesham found his elderly father-in-law Mick was unable to use his hearing aids effectively several years ago, he decided to build his own device to enable Mick to reconnect with his social world. After some research, the result is Listenear providing affordable and practical hearing solutions. The simple design has excellent battery life and it is relatively easy to operate and handle. It provides a low-cost and effective strategy for people who want to improve their hearing quality and for hearing impaired people who have problems with existing hearing aids. You will be able to enjoy talking with friends without strain and misunderstanding, even when noisy, and it is also very useful in the

car when background noise can make conversation difficult. “Living with my hearing loss affects everyone around you. My daughter couldn’t stand to watch TV with me because it was always too loud, so she’d always leave the room. This device has given both me and my daughter a new lease of life. We can now watch TV together and I can also communicate with her better, without disruption. I can recommend ListenEar for their professional assistance and this device to anyone wanting to improve their quality of life. It’s truly amazing.” Testamonial by Eileen Lota Qld. The Pocketalker amplifies sounds closest to the listener while reducing background noise. It features a lightweight, ergonomic design for portability and ease of

use. Fingertip adjustable volume control allows you to quickly adjust to your listening environment whether your hearing loss is low frequency or high frequency sounds. Pocketalker brings voices closer, making them clearer and louder. With the use of the included 12 ft. microphone extension cord, the Pocketalker microphone can be placed next to a TV or sound system speaker to provide extra amplification with the benefit of reduced sound distortion and reverberation. The volume control easily adjusts the amplification level to suit your need and the voice level of the person you wish to hear and you can quickly and discreetly adjust the frequency response of the Pocketalker system to compensate for your

hearing deficit and the high or low pitch of the voice you are listening to. With a modern look that is both functional and elegant in appearance,

Pocketalker is similar in shape and size to a cell phone and can be handheld, worn around the neck on a lanyard or attached to the included belt clip and it comes

with a 5 year warranty. Pocketalker is available with your choice of headphones, ear buds or neck loop. Optional accessories include directional microphones

Free breast cancer screening BREASTSCREEN Queensland is providing free breast cancer screening at The Pines Shopping Centre, Elanora from 10 March until 22 May. Women aged between 50 and 74 are recommended to have a breastscreen every 2 years, as the risk of developing breast cancer increases dramatically for women over 50. Having a regular breastscreen is the best way of finding breast cancer at an early stage, well before it can be felt or other signs noticed. Women in their forties, and those aged 75 and older, are eligible to have a free breastscreen if they wish. Services are also permanently located at Helensvale, Southport and West Burleigh. To arrange a free breastscreen appointment at your nearest location phone 13 20 50.

AUSTRALIANS love Italy. We love Italian food, wine, a certain craziness and “la dolce vita”…the good life. And a holiday in Italy is pretty high on most bucket lists. So when we decided to go south of Rome instead of north for the first time, the Amalfi Coast beckoned. We’d heard so much about it, and seen many films and websites, that it seemed like we’d been before. We were wrong. Hiring a car in Naples, we head south along an autostrada for the first half hour, then there’s a peninsula with twisty, narrow roads until we hit Sorrento… and presto! The jagged edges of the Amalfi Coast unravel before us. It’s a daunting prospect as we look at this serpentine route high above the cliffs, and it’s like nothing we’ve expected. Sheer drops,

total adrenaline with Vespas buzzing like bees all around and large tour coaches like elephants around the corners. It’s all fun, as long as you can keep your cool [ and temper] in the face of fearless Italian drivers. Before you reach the city of Salerno there are three main towns to explore, with a huge range of hotels and pensiones…Positano and Amalfi on the coast, and Ravello in the hinterland. They all have charm by the bucketload but are different in every other way. Positano for trendy boutiques and trattorias specialising in seafood; Amalfi for a busier vibe and nightlife; and Ravello for its ubercool craft shops, the 13th century Villa Rufolo and the Cathedral dating back to the same period. Ravello is one of the most famous [and touristy] mountain towns in Italy, with good reason.

But for us, the highlight is a small coastal village called Praiano, just a few kilometres from Positano with a quieter, more “authentic” feel and some really good restaurants like La Brace, whose pizzas are worth braving the road trip. There’s also a bar/café where the locals congregate in the evening and will happily practise their English with you as you sip a Campari or a Peroni. Over the next few days in Praiano we’re overwhelmed by the experience of staying in an extraordinary hotel perched on the side of a steep cliff, with an elevator built through the rocks to the stony beach below. It’s the Casa Angelina, one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and it’s sheer perfection. Balconies look out over the blue Mediterranean and the paler blue sky, creating an

UNWARY and aged tourists can make easy targets for thieves because they stand out in a crowd, are unused to their surroundings, and are generally carrying money, credit cards and valuables such as cameras. You can reduce your risk of being mugged or robbed by taking a few simple precautions. It is a good idea to research the safety of your intended destination with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This government department keeps an updated bulletin on travel destinations, covering factors such as political unrest or criminal activities that target tourists. You could also consult with your travel agent, or talk to friends who have already visited your intended destination. Travel safety suggestions include: Keep your travel plans, including accommodation details, to yourself; Try not to travel at night; As a general rule, city streets that include children and women suggest the area is safe for families; Carry with you at all times the contact details of the Australian embassy. If your city doesn’t have an Australian embassy, find out which other country’s embassy is available to help you, such as the British embassy; Keep a photocopy of your passport and all other important documents in a safe place; Use ATMs during the day, when there are people around; Try to rely more on credit cards and travellers’ cheques than cash; If you are mugged, don’t fight back. It is better to lose a few dollars and a wristwatch than get injured; At the airport, watch for your suitcase as it appears on the carousel. Don’t hang back and wait for the crowds to disperse – you might find that someone else has already taken your bag in the meantime; Avoid changing money at airports, as thieves could be watching you; Don’t share taxis with strangers.

style and a sense of humour seen in the glass sculptures by a Mexican artist Sosabravo. The pervasive atmosphere is one of complete relaxation where subtle music, lighting and the scents of lemon and sandalwood combine to create “a different vision of luxury” as the owner puts it. It’s topped off by a very fine terrace restaurant where Contemporary meets Italy in a very happy marriage. The Amalfi Coast should be on every Seniors agenda. HOLIDAY & Leisure Fantastic food, stunning scenery, rich culture make Taiwan beyond all your expectations TAIWAN in the minds of many is that of a technologically advanced “industrial island”, however there is much more to Taiwan, including a wide array of tourism and ecological resources, a diversity of traditional folk customs, a rich culture, modern arts, and fantastic food. In short, visitors will discover that Taiwan is “beyond all expectations.” First known to the West as “Ilha Formosa, or Beautiful Island” Taiwan has more than 200 mountains that soar above 3,000 metres, and the Island’s unique geology and topography have created countless arresting landscapes and alluring coastal scenes. With worldclass natural landscapes such as the awesome Taroko Gorge, at a staggering 19 kilometres long and in places more than 900 metres deep, the towering cliffs on either side frame a yawning marble chasm. Taiwan is also the

of Buddhism and a visit to the Monastery is a “must do.” Combine this with the advantage of convenient transportation and a unique and safe travel environment that you will want to enjoy again and again. Travel to Taiwan is relatively easy with China Airlines and EVA Air both having direct flights from Brisbane to Taipei 3 times a week. With ancient pottery, bronzes and jade, Ming vases, Song landscape paintings and calligraphy even a foreign eye can appreciate. In addition Taiwan has one of the world’s tallest certified buildings in Taipei 101, a true engineering marvel. Being well known for its

welcoming friendly people and a great shopping culture Taiwan will imprint indelible memories in the minds of visitors. Central Taiwan’s Chung Tai Chan Monastery was designed by the same architect as the modern Taipei 101 building, and the 15-storey monastery complex blends Eastern, Western and futuristic styles. Take a train (a steam train of course)

THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Soci-

ety (Queensland Division) has now entered iti 57th year of operating rail tours. Over 970 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. Come along, be a part of history as you travel on the first steam train to Springfield on Saturday 8th March. This exciting day by steam train takes you out through the western suburbs and along the newest railway line.

It is 45 years since the Brisbane Tramway System closed, so join us for a “1960s Transport Day” travelling by Silver Bullet Rail Motor out to the Ferny Grove to visit the Tramway Museum for a nostalgic day riding a variety of trams that have been lovingly restored. One of our best day’s outings is on again in May, the Redcliffe Rail and Sail where we travel by steam train to Sandgate and return from Redcliffe to the City by launch. This tour can be done is reverse also. To book or order a brochure phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thurs-

In the volunteer spirit

THE Information Desk at the Gold Coast City Gallery, located in The Arts Centre, Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise, is staffed by friendly volunteers, eager to be of assistance to the many visitors who pass through the Centre’s doors. The three volunteers pictured here are Judith (at left), who has taken her turn at the desk for some nine years; Marjolyn (centre), helping out now for four years, and Norm, volunteering for about three years. When asked what they liked best about being volunteers at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Judith, Marjolyn and Norm were in agreement. ‘It’s the people we meet.’ Owned and managed by Gold Coast City Council, The Arts Centre Gold Coast comes complete with two art galleries, two cinemas, two theatres, function rooms and a cafe.

So much on offer at Gold Coast Libraries

IF someone mentions the word ‘library’ to you, are books the only thought that comes to mind? If so, chances are that you haven’t kept pace with Gold Coast City Library developments for some time. Robina Branch Library recently hosted over 30 women (men were welcome but possibly too shy to attend) who were given the opportunity to learn handy sewing tips, both on a domestic sewing machine and on an interlocker. Experienced Runaway Bay seamstress Judith Turner, 60, led the two-hour session on a volunteer basis. Good news is that Judith will return in future to make another presentation, the topics to include making zipper flowers as well as how to insert zippers, the latter one of Judith’s favourites sewing tasks. (Difficult to believe for those who struggle sewing-in zips.) The amazing Judith, who comes with a wealth of sewing knowledge and experience including having operated six clothing alteration shops, has also written a book that is available through the library system, Clothing Alteration Secrets Revealed 3rd Edition. When Judith wasn’t able to find a publisher for her (well-illustrated 228-page spiralbound) book, she went to TAFE to learn the ropes and then financed the book herself, taking it to Hong Kong to get it published. There’s no stopping this dynamo. To whet the appetite, one of Judith’s tips during the library session was to buy Op Shop tops (with Judith recommending the not-for-profit Animal Welfare League Op Shop on Southport’s Young Street as a great place to buy) and then blend two tops together to get one stylish new top. Judith had several ‘blended’ tops on display to show how easily the redesign can be done. Another hat that Judith wears is Queensland State Liaison Officer, Australian Sewing Guild, Gold Coast and Hinterland, plus she also writes for Stitches magazine. If you would like to contact Judith, email: judith@geniecentre.com; call: 0417 369 339; visit: www.geniecentre.com. For more information about the many library happenings throughout the Gold Coast—a friendly way to meet new people—be sure to pick up your free 45-page catalogue at one of the 13 local libraries or at the Mobile Library. You’ll be glad you did.

Pops Orchestra celebrates 30th Anniversary Concert THIS year the Queensland Pops Orchestra commemorates its 30th Anniversary and to celebrate it has prepared a year filled with Pops favourites. On 17 May 2014 the Pops, lead by conductor Patrick Pickett, will present the 30th Anniversary concert and this will feature internationally renowned singer Mirusia Louwerse and the Pops pinup boy Gregory Moore at the Queensland Performing Arts Complex. Queensland born Mirusia has risen to international stardom through her performances with Andre Rieu. Referred to by him as “The Angel of Australia” Mirusia continues to enjoy amazing success with Andre’s concert tours around the world. Mirusia is also enjoying great success with her own concert tours across Europe and Australia. Like Mirusia, Gregory Moore had some of his earliest stage performances with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. He became the face of the Pops “Scotland the Brave” series and has remained one of the Pops more requested artists. Gregory will be back to sing those songs that have made him a favourite over the years. This concert will feature some of

the most popular pieces ever played by the Pops. The Friends of the Pops have been asked to vote for their most loved pieces of music and Patrick will have the unenviable tasks of refining the program down to the most requested. Also joining the Pops orchestra is a rising young pianist Chai Jie. The 16 year old currently attending school at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School will make her concert debut with the full orchestra on this concert playing Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This program will also feature some of the many hundreds of musicians who have played with the Pops over the last 30 years. This will include a violin solo by the long serving Concertmaster Julie-Anne O’Reilly. The finale of this concert is sure to be one of the most spectacular ever. The celebrations will be triumphant and not only designed to celebrate the last 30 years but a real launching pad for the next phase of the orchestras history. There are two performance only of this concert on 17 May 2014 - Matinee at 2.30pm and an evening performance at 8.00pm. Tickets are on sale now through QPAC 136246 or www.qpac.com.au

‘Let Us Entertain You’ . . . Poetry in Paradise celebrates 10th anniversary

POETRY in Paradise is not only alive and well and thriving but this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. Founded by Jeff Goudy in 2004, Poetry in Paradise began with a few enthusiasts meeting at a local cafe. Moving premises several times, home is now the comfort of Southport Branch Library. According to bard Ian McDougall, Jeff the Poet, as he is affably known, has never wavered from his aim of leading a poetry group that did not discriminate, evaluate or criticise, despite changes and challenges along the way. Instead, everyone was, and is to this day, welcomed and encouraged; with fun and enjoyment the main criteria. The group includes a wheelchair user, whose carer reads for him due to a communication disability, and a married couple young at 88. Jeff’s role within Poetry in Paradise has always been as volunteer coordinator. With no committee or rigid structure or fees, Jeff happily dons a variety of organisational hats that run the gamut from printing-out programs to arranging transport where necessary,

although others willingly assist as required. Jeff also provides a lectern he built to accommodate people of varying heights. Ian says, ‘No matter what has been happening in Jeff’s life, he has done his utmost to be with the group each month; creating an atmosphere of warmth and friendship through the sharing of poetry. His positivity,’ Ian continues, ‘is infectious, especially amongst newcomers and those nervous about reciting in front of others. Jeff shares the richness of his life and his caring and loving nature, as well as his innate larrikinism and mateship, through his poetry.’ Jeff studied to become an early stage nurse, working as a casual at aged care homes. He then enrolled at Griffith University, working parttime as a registered nurse specialising in mental health. His studies continue through honours and masters subjects. Jeff has led Poetry in Paradise in readings and in promoting poetry at events as diverse as Australia Day, The Bloke’s Lounge, aged care facilities, Seniors Week, and the Tamworth

Country Music Festival. For more information about Poetry in Paradise, email: jeffthepoet@yahoo.com. au; visit http:// joansmallpoetryandbooks. com/ poetry_in_paradise.html. Or just go along on the third Sunday monthly,

Memoirs will display an array of emotions ranging from the exuberance of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite to the triumph of the human spirit in John Williams’ Schindler’s List. Adding to the occasion will be the brilliance and allure of Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Faure and Mascagni. Chen Yang will conduct the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra in Memoirs on Sunday March 30, 2014 from 2.30 p.m. (N.S.W. time) / 1.30 p.m. (Qld time) at Tweed Heads Civic Centre, Brett St, Tweed Heads. New chef and menu at RSL PATRONS of Alleys Restaurant, the multi-award winning flagship of Currumbin RSL have noticed their dining experience has recently changed for the better. A favourite venue of locals and tourists alike for many years, Alleys has both a new Head Chef and a new Seasonal Summer Menu. Featuring locally sourced produce - including herbs and vegetables from the club’s own garden, a va-

riety of gluten free and vegetarian options and the culinary creativity of new Head Chef Felicity Best, Alleys caters for everyone in the family. Children’s’ meals and a free kids club with iPads look after the young patrons. New Head Chef, Felicity Best, hailing from Australia’s gourmet produce excellence capital, Tasmania, watched in awe as a child as chefs in her family’s pub kitchen created patrons food. “I love great fundamental ingredients. Tasmania taught me that quality of simple food gives benefit to taste as well as the best nourishment.” She says. “These selective foundations of a dish should be handled with a light touch to let them speak for them-

selves. The upside of this is that the true nutritional value of the food is retained.” Says Felicity. Previously the owner of her own restaurant for 10 years, Ms Best is passionate about the whole dining experience – she loves to try new things, different cuisines and often draws on her travels for innovation in the kitchen. Especially inspirational to her is the Currumbin RSL garden where she sources most of the vegetables and herbs utilised in her dishes. Felicity is often seen foraging in the patch with her team members for needed ingredients. The new Alleys Summertime Seasonal Menu includes delicacies such as Duck and Macadamia Spring Rolls (gluten free),

Crumbed Camembert Cheese and expertly sourced fresh Oysters done 3 ways. Mains include a Northern Rivers Rack of Lamb encrusted with herbs or a Wild M u s h r o o m Ragout....Felicity focuses on fresh and local wherever possible. Alleys is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week and located within the Currumbin RSL Club on Currumbin, Creek Road at Currumbin.. The superb food is complemented by friendly, second-to-none service and stunning water views of the picturesque Currumbin estuary. Live music accompanies your dining experience on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon.

Use your skills, have fun and travel AUSTRALIAN Business Volunteering (ABV) contributes to poverty reduction, sustainable development and good governance by providing Australian expert volunteers who, through sharing their skills and experience, assist businesses and organisations in developing countries to grow and thrive. They focus on people in South East Asia and

the Pacific. These aims are to help reduce poverty and create sustainable development. Promoting good governance is also an important goal of the aid program. Many micro, small and medium sized businesses, community groups, non-government organisations, and government agencies in developing countries need all kinds of practical advice and training but cannot afford to pay for professional consultants. ABV ask them to provide accommodation, food and a modest allowance for volunteers. ABV volunteers are mostly retired or self-employed people who freely give their time and assistance. They are tradespeople, professionals and business people, both men and women, who draw upon many years of experience in their fields. If you would like to use your skills, have some fun and travel - volunteer for Australian Business Volunteers. Phone Number: 02 6285 1686 or Email Address: info@abv.org.au

Cultural Precinct designs to tour the city DRAWN from The Reveal curated exhibition which attracted more than 4500 visitors at the Gold Coast City Gallery last November and December, the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct Touring Exhibition 2014 will visit the city’s libraries and other venues. The touring exhibition will tell the story of the international design competition which led to selection of a strikingly colourful and distinctly Gold Coast winning design by ARM Architecture + Topotek1. ARM Architecture’s concept will be presented in a scale model, ‘fly through’ animation, designs and images. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the exhibition would allow residents across the city to see a ‘breath-taking design which represents the city’s cultural coming of age’. “This is our cultural future. It will be a heart for art, culture and civic cel-

ebration,” Cr Tate said. “While it will be built at Evandale, it will support and nurture arts, culture and creative enterprise right across the city. “It will build creative capital, make the Gold Coast a must-visit cultural tourism destination, and generate new, local jobs for future generations of Gold Coasters. “And with implementation of our new Culture Strategy, we now have a coordinated and confident vision for the city’s cultural future.” The exhibition can be seen at Elanora Library during normal library opening hours, until Saturday 15 March and residents can provide comments and ideas through a feedback box. It may also be viewed at Helensvale Branch Library from 17 March to 5 April. For future venues and dates, visit goldcoastculturalprecinct.info.

community news Chicks@Lunch enjoy Mystic Day

ONCE you hear the catchy name Chicks@Lunch it’s hard to forget, but what is even more memorable is that the not-for-profit Chicks@Lunch has raised nearly $200,000 for the Animal Welfare League since 2001. Started by the unstoppable Rosie Thompson and a small clutch of keen supporters, Chicks@Lunch has gone from strength to strength thanks to determination, hard work and, importantly, a lot of fun. New Chicks are always welcome and, Gents, if any Gold Coast malebased organisation shares the same ethics, goals and friendship values, Rosie would be happy for Chicks and Roosters to talk about the possibility of working together, even just a couple of times a

year if that suits best, in order to assist both groups and their respective causes. Meeting place of Chicks@Lunch continues to be the picturesque Southport Yacht Club on the last Wednesday of every month. Theme of the February gettogether was Mystic Day, and many of the 120 Chicks who enjoyed the event dressed in the spirit of the occasion. Palm readings, spiritual stalls and homemade fortune cookies (all filled with good news) were just some of the clever fundraising methods used on the day. Wellpriced fashion jewellery was also on sale, as was a range of clothing based, not surprisingly, on the mystical. Anyone wanting more information about Chicks@Lunch is asked
