‘Space baby’ hopes North Brevard’s future will exceed stellar legacy Compelled by the tradition of his family that is common among space workers and Brevard County residents overall, Barringer is a military veteran, serving in the U.S. Army for more than seven years immediately after high school graduation.

During his military service, Barringer was awarded air assault and airborne badges, including the Italian airborne badge. He completed the Army’s coveted Ranger qualification training and was injured while conducting hazardous airborne operations in Kosovo. As he recuperated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Barringer worked with incoming injured veterans in the wake of 9/11.

Recognizing that thousands of former KSC workers needed assistance in transitioning to new careers from long-term employment in the aerospace industry, Barringer volunteered and served as the government liaison officer for the Space Coast Technical Network during its formative stages.

STN is made up of displaced space workers who help each other find jobs or gain training for other jobs while awaiting the hoped-for incoming commercial space industry.

Barringer also helps fellow veterans in the community get higher education and jobs. He is a founding member of the Collegiate Veterans Society, an organization focused on helping veterans achieve success through higher education. He received his bachelor of arts pre-law degree this month.

Matthew “Matt” Barringer of Titusville is the product of two parents who dedicated their lives to the aerospace industry, as are many of the residents of the Space Coast. Jay and Helen Barringer relocated here from Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to work on the space shuttle program until their retirement.

“It’s made me really passionate to preserve our unique space history,” Barringer said. The self-described “space baby” highlighted his father’s skyward-looking legacy at the family patriarch’s funeral in July.

“We need to make sure we continue to be leaders in the industry, as well as to rejuvenate our economic strength,” Barringer said. “That is what my father would have wanted.”

The Space Coast, North Brevard in particular, suffered with the mannedspace transition from the Apollo moon era, and now the retirement of the space shuttle fleet that has displaced 8,000 workers and the countless others who depended on their commerce. Unlike the Apollo-to-space shuttle transition, there is no current space program or positions for workers to fill.

The greatest concentration of space shuttle workers was in the historic city that is closest to Kennedy Space Center, leaving homes unoccupied and in foreclosure as skilled workers left for jobs in other states, shuttering businesses.

In addition, Barringer performs civic services as a member of the Titusville Board of Adjustment and Appeals, Rotary Club and Titusville Chamber of Commerce board. His most high profile post is president of the Greater Titusville Renaissance, currently focusing on how best to use economic development funds from a North Brevard special assessment district and the rebirth of the Miracle City Mall. All of this is on top of his full-time job in hospice care.

Commodore: Youth key to the future for yacht club By george white

The Melbourne Yacht Club is now 60 families strong, but new commodore Page Proffitt, 62, knows the group needs new blood.

Proffitt took the reins in February for his turn at the yearlong position and wants to make the most of it in terms of getting new faces.

“I think what we’ve lost in sailing are the kids. When I grew up, sailing was interesting and the parents were all enthused. Today, the kids want to go fast,’’ he said.

To change that trend, the club formed in 1947 has modified its membership policies, he said.

“What we’re trying to do is get younger people in. The younger people don’t want to come in if there’s nothing but 60-year-old people. Most people want to associate with people of their own age,’’ he said.

The rules now allow younger couples, including those without boats, to try out the club at a discount, he said.

“They can come and check out a boat for free and see how they like it. And all of our members are looking for crew all the time. The more wind there is, the more people they need,’’ he said.

Everybody takes a turn at leading the group, he said.

“That’s one thing about this club: It’s a family-run club, so our membership runs the parties and the racing,’’ he said.

The club is active all year with all types of racing and social events, but slows down

during the summer months.

“This is probably the best place to sail of anywhere along the East Coast of Florida. We have a mile and half across with six feet of depth. It’s about three miles long up and down with good depth,’’ he said.

This week, more than 200 area businesses in Brevard County that handle wire transfers of money will be receiving large envelopes marked in red that declare â&#x20AC;&#x153;Priorityâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Scam Alert!â&#x20AC;?

State Attorney Phil Archer directed staff last week to prepare the mailings in an effort to reach potential victims of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grandparent Scam,â&#x20AC;? a crime starting to make the rounds here, before they, too, lose part or all of their life savings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Several Brevard residents have fallen victim to this scam in recent weeks and it really is devastating. We want people to be aware of it and bear it in mind before they wire money to a relatives because it is like your money disappears,â&#x20AC;? Archer said.

The scam works like this: The call comes out of the blue.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a flustered sounding woman, crying. The first words out of her mouth are, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Poppa, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sandy. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in trouble,â&#x20AC;? she sobs. Immediately, the grandfather is on red alert. His granddaughter is in trouble.

The details vary, but usually the tale of woe is unfolding in either a foreign country or a remote state where the vacationing young woman has met with mishap â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an accident, an injury, an arrest â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and there is an immediate need for money for bail, doctors, rental vehicles. And Poppa springs into action. Within 90 minutes, he has gone to the bank, withdrawn funds, and wired the money to his suffering granddaughter. If she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound just right, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because of the tears or the wound to her mouth, or the bad connection.

And sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be paying him back in just days, as soon as she gets home.

consider. He calls other relatives to see if they have more information about the accident â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and his granddaughter answers the phone at her home.

In addition to the letter alerting businesses to the scam, Archer provided a flyer that could be displayed on the businessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; countertop warning potential victims. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These scammers are always pushing the victim. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;This is urgent. Do this now. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tell anyone else.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; If you should receive such a call, slow down, stop. Call another relative to confirm the whereabouts of your loved one who supposedly needs your help. Once money is wired, it is virtually impossible to retrieve it and there is no recovery,â&#x20AC;? Archer warned. This scam is not directed only at grandparents.

If you feel you have become the victim of this scam, contact your local law enforcement agency as soon as you can, Archer said. The best way to defeat this scam is with knowledge, he added.

Grand parenting is a grand adventure. We are able to jump for joy at our grandchildrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accomplishments and wipe away their tears when their world seems to be crashing down. Papa and Nana can become the extra pair of hands to hold them at times, and a heart to welcome them always.

A grandparent is given a great opportunity to impart to their grandchildren a part of themselves, their time, talent and treasure. I find that of the most important roles of a grandparent is to pass on their faith to the next generation.

Whenever I am on one of those, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nana and Me Daysâ&#x20AC;? with one of my 11 grandchildren, I try to do just that. I often sing songs of praise, share about Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goodness, or make the Bible come alive in everyday life experiences.

One spring day while keeping one of my grandchildren, I decided to use a paper nativity scene, as a teaching point.

Together we acted out the nativity scene, placing each character in the stable just right; first Mary and Joseph, then baby Jesus and finally the angels. Displaying all the drama of a Broadway actress, I continued the story, adding the shepherds, Three Kings, animals, and finally the star of Bethlehem to make our story complete.

My grandchild was so impressed with how much God loved us that she wanted to tell the story over and over again. However, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;t really know how much of the Christmas story she retained until a few months later. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ll never forget that moment of grace, nor the expression of

accomplishment on her face.

It was another â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nana and Me Dayâ&#x20AC;? and the two of us were just sharing heart to heart. My granddaughter said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nana, I told my friend that Jesus loves her and He loves me too.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Really,â&#x20AC;? I said with a smile. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What did she say back, dear?â&#x20AC;? With her heart full of joy, she responded, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nana, my friend said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;? With the kind of pride that can only fill a Nanaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart when she is with her grandchild, I answered, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do you know what? You are an Evangelist!â&#x20AC;? Then we both burst into song with a verse of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jesus Loves Me.â&#x20AC;? This spontaneously brought about loud uncontrollable giggles from both of us.

Parenting second time around calls for new skills

Heather Dimmig inventoried her support programs for seniors taking on the role of caregiver for a spouse. She considered the efforts to meet the needs of caregivers whose jobs have ended with the death of their loved one.

One group of caregivers age 55 or older served by Aging Matters of Brevard had no place to fit under the agency umbrella, the official distribution point for most state and federal aging programs. They are the growing number of seniors caring for children who are not their own. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grandparents raising grandchildren may find it difficult to keep up with the technology that is so critical to youngsters today. Many of them have never been on the Internet, let alone be able to keep up with the texting, social networking, even textbooks and school work on line in some cases,â&#x20AC;? said Dimmig, Ph.D., vice president of operations for Aging Matters.

Dimmig oversees the caregiver support programs, now including the brand new GrandParenting Again. The effort provides support groups across Central Brevard, with meeting locations in west Cocoa, Cocoa and Merritt Island. It also delivers tutoring, parenting and nutrition classes, and legal, emotional and financial support.

The fifth annual Bowl for the Troops fundraiser provides professional counseling for military women and children who struggle to understand the effects of war on their loved one, including post-traumatic stress, brain injury and other disabilities.

New grief support group in West Melbourne Brookdale Senior Living, in partnership with Hospice of St. Francis, will host a new community grief support group at Sterling House II in West Melbourne, located at 7200 Greenboro Drive.

The group is available free to the public. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 9 and will continue meeting the second and fourth Monday of each month.

Dr. Marja Sprock is not an ordinary Ob-Gyn, by any means. Her practice includes urological procedures, as well as other gynecological techniques, which are common in women.

As a urogynecologist, Sprock has helped many women with difficulties resulting from urinary and bowel dysfunctions, as well as sexual irregularities.

She has been in practice since 1990 and received her Fellowship in 2003.

Sprock had been in her previous office on Eyster Boulevard for more than three years when she realized she needed a larger, more modern facility. Her current office allows more room for patients to receive modern treatments, including tibia nerve stimulation, a relatively new procedure to help with urinary incontinence. She also offers training of the pelvic floor

muscles in order to eliminate urinary leakage and incontinence.

Sprock offers repair of bladder and rectum prolapse, as well as surgery for labia problems including disfigurement or malformation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of women, some quite young, have these problems,â&#x20AC;?

Sprock said.

It is something that can be repaired surgically or with Botox. She also offers surgery for vaginal lip repair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many women are born with these disfigurements,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are embarrassed by the size of their genitals. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not something a lot of people talk about, but there is a need for surgery for these problems.â&#x20AC;?

Sprock teaches women to train their muscles with the Intone system at home, ending the worry of incontinence.

According to Sprock, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter how severe the incontinence problem is. She can offer muscle training, the

tibia nerve stimulation or surgery to correct it. Women do not have to go through life with urinary or stool leakage, which can be a major embarrassment in social situations.

Often, after menopause, women suffer pain in the vaginal area during intercourse. Surgery to correct this problem is available and quite successful.

She stressed that if someone wants to cut in line at a public restroom, it may be due to a real need and she hopes others will be compassionate in regard to her problem.

Various medical conditions can cause incontinence and women often have to race to get to the bathroom.

Sprock also works with women who previously had mesh fitted to hold up their bladders and are now having problems with it. Therefore, these women have to choose another less invasive procedure.

Dear Lance, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m new to Medicare. Why are the monthly premiums of some Prescription Drug Plans (Medicare Part D) so much higher than others?

What is the difference between the plans with higher premiums and the ones with a very low premium? â&#x20AC;&#x201D;A question often asked by seniors Dear seniors: Welcome to Medicare! it is very easy to get confused when choosing among the 29 prescription drug plans currently available to Medicare beneficiaries in Brevard County. itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a challenge to select the one that will work best for you.

Prescription drug plans can differ from one another in many ways: â&#x20AC;˘ Monthly premiums â&#x20AC;˘ Deductible amounts, if any, before the plan helps pay for your medications â&#x20AC;˘ Medications that they cover (formulary) â&#x20AC;˘ Tiers or co-payment levels of your medications â&#x20AC;˘ Pharmacies (and lower-cost Preferred Pharmacies) that are in their network â&#x20AC;˘ Availability of a mail order pharmacy â&#x20AC;˘ National coverage or local coverage only A plan with a very low monthly premium may have up to a $325 annual deductible, whereas a plan with a higher premium may have no deductible.

Similarly, the formulary or medications covered by a very low monthly premium plan may cover fewer medications than one that charges a higher premium. Copayments for the same medications may be higher for a lower-premium plan than for one that has a higher premium. These differences will probably also be true when one company offers several prescription plans with different premiums. And these are just some of the possible differences between lower premium and higher premium plans.

So, when you are looking for a Part D Prescription Drug Plan, the premium charged by the plan should not be the major consideration in your decision.

What should really matter is the total cost to you of your medications over the year, including the monthly premium for the plan. The plans with the lowest monthly premiums may actually have a higher total annual cost to you than one that has a higher premium.

SHiNE counselors are trained to assist you in selecting the prescription drug plan that will work best for you. We will take your list of prescriptions, preferred pharmacies and other information and provide you with a list of the plans that will have the lowest total cost to you for your medications and plan premium.

You can also go to medicare.gov to do a Part D Plan search.

Part D plans change annually. if you presently have a Part D Plan, we recommend that you speak to a SHiNE counselor during the Annual Election Period between October 15 and Dec. 7. During this period, you can change your Part D plan. We can help you to determine whether your present plan will still be the best one for you in the coming year.

Efforts are already gearing up for the 2014 Fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day Tool Drive, where for the month of June fathers ask for gifts of tools to build homes for Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County rather than traditional neckties. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The tool drive is an opportunity for us to replenish the tools that wear down or break,â&#x20AC;? said Brevard Habitat president and CEO Joe Gassman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The benefit is we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to dip into our funds for construction grade equipment, money we would normally use to build houses with families in need in our community.â&#x20AC;?

This year, there were five drop sites where people could donate their new or used tools, four churches and a community center. Eight other churches, Viera Pizza and Fidelity Bank on Merritt island also participated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We post a wish list on our website and send it to each participating group and they share it with their congregations or customers and request a new tool donation,â&#x20AC;? said Lisa Barr, vice president of development for Habitat.  One of the participating churches, Palmdale Presbyterian, decided to raise funds to purchase a 20-foot fiberglass ladder so volunteers can climb onto the roofs of houses they help build. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The response in our church was overwhelming,â&#x20AC;? said Andrew Schirmacher Jr., member and tool drive coordinator for Palmdale. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only did we raise money for the ladder but there was enough left over to also buy 15 pairs of work gloves.â&#x20AC;?

This year, Habitat received hammers, gloves, ladders and many other much needed tools, Barr said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;More than 3,500 volunteers will use these tools on a Habitat build this year.  The Fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day Tool Driveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success makes it possible to build a wall, frame a window and put shingles on a roof. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thank the community enough for helping us create a world where everyone has a decent place to live.â&#x20AC;?

Lt. Col. Ron Davis was born in Camp Wheeler near Macon, Ga., but his heart forever remains in Florida. “i come from an old Florida family,” said Davis, who is now retired.

“My great, great granddad lived in Palatka by the St. Johns River. My own parents lived in Daytona, where my mom was born on Main Street, just a block from the pier. My two sisters were born in Florida.”

Davis himself would have been a Sunshine State native had it not been for World War ii, which caused his father to be drafted and sent to Camp Wheeler.

Davis’ family eventually returned to Florida, to quaint Live Oak in the middle of the state. “it was a quiet little town, where my school teachers, scout masters and other adults encouraged young men to join the military,” Davis said.

“The military is a preferred career opportunity for many Southern families like mine, and as a young man, it seemed much better than staying in Live Oak.” Davis secured an appointment to the Air Force Academy, graduating in 1966. His wings arrived in 1967 and Davis began a decade-long career of flying KC-135 jet tankers in the United States, as well as in the Philippines, Taiwan, Okinawa and Guam.

The tankers are awesome beasts that carry 31,000 gallons of fuel for refueling jet fighters at 25,000 feet…while flying at 480 miles an hour. it’s not a bad job, says Davis.

“The tanker pilot has the sweet deal,” explained Davis.

“He just has to stay still.”

Davis later finagled what he called a sweet job with the Alaskan Air Command, where he helped manage air space and air traffic congestion issues, as well as environmental concerns. The job took him flying from Fairbanks to Anchorage, with side trips to the Aleutians and the Polar ice cap.

“The flying i did in Alaska was simply wonderful,” he said.

He was later assigned as the Air Force liaison with the Federal Aviation Administration at both Chicago O’Hare international Airport and Denver’s Stapleton international Airport.

“My job was to mesh the needs of the Air Force and commercial airlines,” he said.

By the time he retired in 1988, Davis had reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. A Washington, D.C., “retirement job” in air traffic control engineering took care of the next two decades. By the end of 2007, Davis was ready to return to Florida. “in 2008, my parents were both alive and my daughter had married a NASA guy,” Davis said.

minutes away from my family. it’s a heck of a dream come true.” “i have a son who lives in Rockledge and cousins all over the place, so we’re close to a lot of family.”

Brevard not only provided proximity to family, but it also helped to continue Davis’ passion for old planes.

“While working in Washington, i had visited the National Air and Space Museum,” Davis said. “i’ve always been an old airplane buff, so i applied to be a docent. i was a docent for ViP tours that included governors, senators and Supreme Court justices. i was an opening day guide at the Steven Udvar-Hazy Center by Dulles international. Even two years after i moved to Florida, i continued working as a docent for the Air and Space Museum.

Upon moving to Florida, Davis also quickly hooked up with the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum and was named its public relations officer in April. Except for a handful of paid staff, the Warbird Museum depends on volunteers like Davis as lifeblood.

While the job can be time-demanding, Davis believes he receives as much as he gives to the Titusville air museum.

“One of the most pleasant surprises is the amount of interested and engaged foreign visitors we get, in particular the Europeans,” Davis said.

Malcolm â&#x20AC;&#x153;Malâ&#x20AC;? Roberts has been inducted into the Honorable order of St. Maurice, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the infantry of the united States Army in significant ways.

Roberts served with the 399th Infantry Division in France, relieving the 45th Infantry Division on the front line at Anzio Beach in 1943. After 117 consecutive days of combat duty, Roberts was sent to a French hospital before he received a medical discharge.

Lynne Meagher, the area coordinator for SHINE (Serving Health Insurance of elders) of Brevard, has left her volunteer leadership position in order to move back to New Jersey to be closer to her family.

SHINE is part of the state’s SHIP program, which stands for State Health Insurance Program.

As a senior volunteer, Meagher was an extraordinary influence on the organization, which has approximately 30 volunteers serving the eight offices from Titusville to Palm Bay. In 2012 alone, the organization served 7,700 people who are on Medicare.

Meagher worked with approximately 1,000 of those people. She said she thoroughly enjoyed helping seniors figure out their Medicare insurance choices and worked to help them understand the whole process.

“The work is very rewarding,” Meagher said, adding that more volunteers are always needed. She explained that anyone interested in volunteering does not have to have an insurance or finance background, but it helps to understand the ins and outs of insurance and to have a problem-solving mindset.

Volunteers do not provide any sort of legal advice or sell or endorse any insurance products or companies. They provide information so that people can make intelligent choices on their own in regard to Medicare insurance plans.

People interested in volunteering should be aware that they must attend a half-day orientation class and a three-day training session. There is an open book test, a Class Two background check and mentor supervision for six or seven sessions before the volunteer is allowed to work alone.

Most volunteers say they really enjoy working with the people who come to them for help. Knowing they can guide seniors to choose the right insurance program is very rewarding. People are often confused when it comes to choosing insurance coverage to meet their particular needs.

Meagher’s background is as a thirdgrade teacher and a human resources employee at Prudential AARP in Pennsylvania. She moved to Florida in 1998 when she decided to join SHINE in Brevard County. Meagher has also been a regular contributing writer for Senior Life.

Recently, Lynne Meagher left the SHINE organization as well as her writing position at Senior Life to move north in order to be closer to her family.

Joe Schuerger In the wake of her leaving, two volunteers who have worked with SHINE for several years have stepped in to take her place. They are Lance Jarvis and Joe Schuerger, both experienced in helping seniors work their way Lance Jarvis through the maze of information and paperwork involved with Medicare and other insurance documents.

Jarvis has taken on the position of SHINE local coordinator and Schuerger is assistant local coordinator. Jarvis has been with SHINE for four years and Schuerger has been with them for three. Both are excited about taking on their new roles in order to meet the needs of the local middle-age and senior population with their questions about Medicare insurance plans, which can be mind boggling.

Jarvis will take over Meagher’s column in Senior Life. It will be called, appropriately, “Ask Lance.” The format will remain the same as before and, as always, questions will be welcomed from the public.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs for Elders) is a volunteer-based organization with a goal of helping people overcome their confusion when it comes

to Medicare parts A and B. They also can answer questions about Medicaid assistance for low-income families.

SHINE is funded by Medicare of Florida and the Department of Elder Affairs. It covers Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Brevard counties. Brevard alone serves more than 7,000 people. With more than 30 volunteers and more trainees learning the ropes, the local SHINE offices handle a number of different inquiries and problems daily, including solving drug formulary policies of various insurance companies. Many people do not know anything about Medicare and Medicaid and are unaware of what they can offer.

That is where SHINE steps in. Seeing a local representative can clear up a lot of questions and confusion.

SHINE has been around for 20 years in Brevard and currently has nine offices serving people from Palm Bay to Titusville. It often conducts seminars and health fairs in assisted-living homes and other venues.

Jarvis earned his doctorate and previously was a college professor at several well-known universities. He also served as a medical practice manager. He decided that he wanted to serve the public in a volunteer capacity and that is the reason he joined SHINE. Schuerger spent six years in the Navy and graduated from Old Dominion College in Virginia before he earned his masters and then his doctorate in business administration. He spent five years in Malaysia before coming to Florida and joining the SHINE organization.

Spaccio finds his athletic home on the tennis court By jeff navin

Nine years ago, Rocco Spaccio put his golf clubs away and picked up a tennis racket. He couldn’t be happier with that decision.

The Viera resident had played golf since the age of 23 and the sport had lost its luster.

“My putting had become so bad,” said Spaccio, who lived in Suntree when he moved to Florida from upstate New York in 1982. “I was disillusioned and lost confidence in my golf game.

One day, I stopped by (the Tradewinds and now the Kiwi Tennis Club) and bought a membership and a tennis racket at their shop.”

It didn't take long before Spaccio realized tennis was a sport he could play during his boomer and senior years.

“Not having played (tennis) helped since I had no bad habits,” Spaccio said. “I enlisted the help of the teaching pros (Murray Lilley and others) and learned the basics. That made the progress much easier.”

The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Spaccio, who grew up near Corning, N.Y., played both basketball and baseball at Corning Community College before transferring to the Rochester Business Institute, where he played basketball. After graduation, he got married to his wife Liz and had two children, Gina and Jeff.

He also found time to play golf and adult softball when the weather permitted.

“Playing baseball and softball helped me with my hand and eye coordination in tennis in being able to throw and run,” Spaccio said. “I was kind of a natural when I started to play.

It was totally unlike golf.”

A good swing in baseball often doesn’t translate well to the golf course.

“In golf, the ball is not moving and there’s more time available to have paralysis by analysis,” Spaccio said.

“Tennis is reactionary; you often don't have to think when you’re out there.

The golf ball is not moving and you’ve got a million thoughts.”

The hot summer weather hasn’t prevented Spaccio and his friends from playing doubles. Spaccio also plays singles on a regular basis.

“You’ve got to stay hydrated,” he said. “If you feel dehydrated, you have to get off the court. I drink a lot of potassium-based stuff with electrolytes.

Just water isn’t enough.”

Older tennis players — all tennis players for that matter — shouldn’t immediately start hitting tennis balls after taking their racket out of the bag when arriving on the court.

“I do some light stretching and I like to do 15 minutes of work with the weights before playing,” Spaccio said.

“If you keep your quads strong, it’ll keep your knees strong. I’ve had no surgeries and no problems with my knees and ankles. I’ve never been cut,” he said, using sports slang for surgery.

Since he started playing tennis at a late stage in life, Spaccio also has been able to avoid the rotator cuff problems which often afflict older players. Many have to have rotator cuff surgery, but improvements in technology have the players back on the court within a couple of months. Spaccio did have a problem with scar tissue in his shoulder which rigorous rehabilitation was able to correct.

injuries that players have,” said Spaccio, who plays for three different teams in the Space Coast Men’s Tennis League. “But, I’ve learned what conditioning works for me. You have to know your limits.”

As a grandparent, he has enjoyed watching his grandson, Jeff Gallo, play baseball. Gallo has had a successful season playing for the Eau Gallie Juniors, who have done well in

competition around the state.

“It’s just a dream come true watching him develop into an athlete and a good student,” Spaccio said.

Before retiring, Spaccio owned his own financial services company.

“My advice is to pay yourself first,” Spaccio said. “You need to invest a dollar amount every month — whatever you can afford. Then, the money will accumulate.” SL
