Flower of the Month Tarflower (Bejaria racemosa), a member of the Ericaceae (Heath) family, is a common understory plant found in scrub and flatwoods in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. The woody shrub, growing to 7 ft. or taller, is highly visible when in bloom. Its large, showy, long-petaled flowers are fragrant. The sticky flowers and fruit trap insects, giving Tarflower its common name. Some observers believe the stickiness traps insects that would steal the nectar, while allowing useful pollinators, such as bees, to get at the nectar. The genus is named for José Bejar, an 18th c. botanist from Cadiz, Spain. Locally, Tarflower can be found in Malabar Scrub Sanctuary, Wickham Park and Cruickshank Sanctuary. The Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS) wants to teach homeowners a new philosophy toward beautiful lawns: green grass is not the best thing for the environment.

Instead of having large lawns to be sprayed with fertilizer and pesticides, there are thousands of native plants that are good for the local ecology, according to FNPS Executive Director Karina Veaudry of Orlando.

Veaudry will give a free presentation on the status of Florida conservation at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22 at the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville.

“The question is what are we doing with our traditional landscape look? The perception is that if a lawn is not emerald green, it’s not healthy, but that’s not true. It’s a status symbol.

Other benefits with native plantings are that they conserve water, provide food and shelter for native birds and butterflies and provide biodiversity for the environment,” she said.

“When you have a monoculture of all green lawns, it’s not ecologically healthy at all,’’ Veaudry said. “When used intelligently, native

plants require less maintenance, are less expensive and save energy. Lawnmowers are considered a significant source of air pollution and also use up an appreciable amount of fossil fuel.”

Native plants require little to no extra water or fertilizer compared to most exotics. Watering non-native plants that aren't adapted to Florida’s climate wastes energy as well as water, costs you money and contributes to the pollution of surface water. Fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides used in landscape and lawn maintenance run off into streams and creeks, polluting these water bodies.

“You don’t need to fertilize at all. If you plant the right plant in the right place, it will get the nutrients on its own,’’ she said.

The one-hour presentation is being sponsored by the Brevard County FNPS chapters. Veaudry, who has a degree in Urban Ecology from the University of Florida, said that there are a total of 38 chapters in the state. She has been a member of FNPS for about 20 years and became executive director in 2006.

This fall marks the third anniversary of his stewardship at FBC. Attendance averaged about 12 when he became pastor. In 2010 that number grew to more than 40.

On High Attendance Day the count was 88 and on Easter Sunday, 80.

Phillips said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about much more than numbers. In the last two years, they have formed a choir, discipleship training, a nursery, fellowship dinners and special fifth-Sunday musical programs.

Phillips, who teaches chorus, guitar, music appreciation and World Cultures at Madison Middle School in Titusville, also serves as pastor during the winter months for Community of Faith at Space Coast RV Resort in Rockledge each Sunday.

Phillips said he is a Southern Baptist because of the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historical commitment to the Bible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am Southern Baptist also because of the view on the autonomy of the local church,â&#x20AC;? he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and because of their commitment to world wide missions and ministry through the Cooperative Program. Through that program every church, regardless of size or budget, can have a strong impact on missions and ministries around the world.â&#x20AC;?

FBC took part in Buckets of Hope for Haiti and for the past two years, has supported Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Ministry. A recent anonymous donation allowed the church to purchase a new organ and piano.

Phillips, the author of three inspirational books, will soon release his fourth.

every year at the beginning of June, i remember how special summers were to me as a child. i used to anticipate the end of school and the beginning of summer vacation. With a family of eight children, my parents seldom went for extended vacations, but i had built-in playmates with my siblings and cousins. until we were old enough to work, we were shooed out of the house in the morning and dared not return before lunchtime. After a quick meal, we were sent out again until just before dark. i remember picking wild blackberries and eating them fresh from the vine. now, vacations return me to my hometown to visit my mother where the same wild blackberries are still growing, not too far from her cultivated strawberries. today, my mother prefers i stay indoors with her, as the summer's heat makes her uncomfortable and instead of hurrying through lunch, we reminisce about the summers of not only my childhood, but hers, too. she makes certain to remind me how much she enjoys her central air conditioning while impressing upon me that when she was a child, air conditioning was nothing more than a breeze blowing through opened windows.

Baby boomers turning 65 and becoming eligible for Medicare were thrown a party for their important milestone.

Hosting the party in Grand Villa May 18 in Melbourne, were volunteers and a state level administrator with the SHINE program, which stands for Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders.

“We estimate that 10,000 individuals nationwide become Medicare eligible every day. It’s a lot more than we used to have, because there were so many babies born starting at the end of World War II,’’ said SHINE Area Coordinator Lynne Meagher.

The program is trying to reach out to large groups to give them important information about Medicare, which has undergone recent changes that could make a difference for many recipients.

“Some of the rules have changed a little because of the Affordable Care Act,’’ she said.

Individuals can get Medicare at age 65, or earlier if they want to receive slightly reduced benefits, or those declared disabled or suffering from end stage renal disease (kidney failure) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, according

to Meagher.

As area coordinator, Meagher is in charge of 37 volunteers in 10 different offices around Brevard County. Last year, the group assisted 4,500 residents.

“We get really busy around our annual enrollment period, from Oct. 15 though Dec. 7, which is the time they can make changes to their plans,’’ she said.

The plans include: Part A for hospitalization, Part B for doctor visits or outpatient procedures, Part C for the Medicare Advantage plan, and Part D for the prescription drug plan.

“We talk about what SHINE can do and the changes they need to know about during the enrollment period. We want them to get the most bang for their Medicare buck but we don’t make the decision for them. We give them the information on the top three choices. It can make a big difference,’’ she said.

Also on hand for the birthday party was Jason Brown, statewide SHINE volunteer and training manager.

“We’re right around the time when the baby boomers are turning 65 and we’ve definitely already experienced a large influx. From here it could increase exponentially.

An idea for “citizen diplomacy” to show foreign visitors around to local sites has taken shape as the Space Coast Council for International Visitors.

“The State Department brings in important business persons and we provide the escort and introduce them to local business leaders,’’ said council president Roger Shurtleff, Jr. of Satellite Beach.

Being born during the Great Depression, economic times were quite different for children compared to the hard times many of us remember. Fortunately, many of us were eventually able to pull out of the rough times and did okay later in life. In my “young motherhood” years I watched how most of my friends were bringing up their children, the values they were or were not teaching them.

However, I stuck to the methods and values my father had taught me, the greatest legacy he could have left me.

Today many of my generation see their adult children, and even grandchildren, struggling to make ends meet. An expression I often heard my young married friends use in the ‘50s and ‘60s, led to many in the next generation not knowing how to manage money. In turn they have not been able to teach their children. The expression I heard frequently was, “I didn’t have anything as a child and I’m going to give my children everything.”

Perhaps those of my generation can reverse this situation by teaching their grandchildren what my father taught me. Dad came home from work one day when I was 5 and placed before me several coin envelopes and 5 pennies.

Patience After spending many hours in a doctor’s waiting room, I observed all levels of patience and impatience. Patience is a virtue shown by people where they endure and suffer through a painful ordeal calmly and without complaint. Waiting is often more painful than the medical procedures that follow.

It is interesting to note that the dictionary has the word “patient” after the word “patience.” It must be related. A patient is “an individual awaiting….medical treatment.” Being a patient is often a real test of patience.

Some patients accepted the wait knowing that the medical providers are doing their best for each person with state-ofthe-art medical services. They bore their trials and strain despite chatter from unpleasant folks having difficulty with their situation. Complaints centered on scheduling of appointments to the problems of our proposed national health care system.

More resilient patients dealt with the adversity with positive comments: “We are fortunate to live here in Florida with quality medical care. I hear the doctor is nationally known for his expertise in dealing with cancer.” Then the conversation switched to children, families, and grandkids. Some of the remarks were upbeat and some turned again to a gripe session.

It appeared people who had lived a long life were on the road to living longer with their positive comments. They re-

I passed this lesson on to my four children although my oldest started with 5 nickels. Over the years, my children got raises, the younger ones starting with a quarter in each envelope in the ‘70s. My children have handled money well, do not run up credit card bills, save for an item before buying and do not go into debt living for “instant gratification.”

The amount is not important. What is important is learning how to budget and live within one’s means. My children didn’t “work for their allowances” as some families do because we always felt, “You share in the family work; you share in the family money.”

Volunteer efforts result in Villa Vista recognized for landscaping and gardening achievements By martha maSiello

The City of Cocoa Beach Landscape Committee, members of whom are appointed by the Cocoa Beach City Commission, awarded the Villa Vista Condominium at 4700 Ocean Beach Blvd., Cocoa Beach, with the Beautification Award for Landscaping and Gardening for the second quarter of 2011 on April 8, 2011.

In January, the condominium board of Villa Vista, a 92-unit, five-story beachfront complex built in 1973, selected a landscaping and gardening committee with owners Diane Recknor as chairperson and Robert Raymo, co-chairperson.

The committee immediately began the first of four phases towards rejuvenation of landscaping to the complex following team research and guidance from the Cocoa Beach Garden Club, a Master Gardner at the University of Florida Agricultural Center in Cocoa, other landscape designers, condo gardeners and experts, and with full support of the board of directors, owners and tenant residents.

Working within a limited budget and with the assistance of donations and volunteers, phase one was completed and phase two began.

Phase two incorporates designated turtle nesting lighting. During nesting season, May 1 through Oct. 1, it is important to turn off lights on buildings near the beach to prevent disorientation of both mothers and nestlings. In addition to using recycled water, the environmentally

Competition fundraiser seeks senior talent How exposed is your coverage leaving you?

Jim Fels will pick up his rock and roll dream again at the inaugural Seniors Got Talent competition to be held at 1 p.m. on July 17 at the Greater Palm Bay Senior Center, 1275 Culver Drive NE, Palm Bay. You don’t have to be a center member to join Fels in the fundraiser competition. You just need to be over age 55 and willing to perform.

There is no cost to enter but $5 admission at the door will go to center programs.

“I learned how to play guitar a little bit as a kid in Long Island. As a teen, I played in my basement, but in my 20s I was playing rock and roll like The Beatles and The Beach Boys,’’ Fels said. “But as so often happens, family life and being a father gets in the way of musical aspirations, leaving the hopeful musician to change priorities until kids are grown. Once I got married, I put it in a corner and I just picked it up about a year ago.’’

Fels, who serves as event chairman is working with his wife, Slyvia, to organize the event..

Performing the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers duet Islands In The Stream with Fels is Louisiana native Fran Blackledge, who also performs with Golden Tones chorus consisting of The Notables and The Pretenders.

“I’ve been singing ever since I was a kid so this will be fun,’’ Blackledge said.

The idea for the fundraiser, or at least the name, came about with the popularity of the television show America’s Got Talent, according to Fels. He said that with the catchy name

When Forkin received Kirsch’s application, she set about to make her wish of becoming a Las Vegas showgirl a reality, but the plans didn’t bear fruit. Forkin called Kirsch to ask if she still wanted her second choice and the octogenarian said, “I jumped on that one.”

TWF has worked almost four years to make Kirsch’s wish come true, and thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors and volunteers such as truck driver and country music singer Annabella Wood, the Brevard resident will realize one of her fondest dreams.

“I’ve always wanted to be a hardtrucking momma shifting gears with the best of them. Now I can. We’ll be two rednecks together.”

A representative from AARP will accompany Kirsch and Wood in her Peterbilt to document the crosscountry trip.

The adventure began for Kirsch long ago, but the journey in the truck starts on Monday, June 6 with an exciting send-off party in Dublin, Pa. and ends 16 days later in Florida.

“My husband, Jack, thinks this is

wonderful,” Kirsch said.

Along the way, Kirsch is scheduled for an interview with RoadKing Magazine in Chicago; a stop at the largest truck stop in the world, in Iowa; visits to senior centers in Nebraska, Colorado, Texas; a concert in the high desert and more photo shoots with RoadKing Magazine in Nevada and California.

In Burbank, Kirsch is scheduled to appear on the Ellen Show before returning home through Arizona, Texas, Louisana and Alabama.

Kirsch still hopes to find a way to kick up her heels as a Las Vegas showgirl.

Kirsh, who has been approached by radio shows and companies with endorsement opportunities, said she only hoped to be a showgirl for a night, but now, she’s doing it, “for everybody who thinks we have nothing left to give after we retire. We’re not dead. We’re just beginning to live. We can do things now that we couldn’t do or weren’t ready to do when we were 26. This is not just about me. I’m kicking a ___ for all of us.”

Four Chambers of Commerce from around Brevard County presented Mega Marketplace: It’s a Jungle Out There on May 20 at the Brevard Zoo Lodge, allowing 100 businesses to speed-network with each other during the luncheon, afternoon and evening event.

“It’s a super long county, so at this annual event where we all come together for one big event. It’s a great way for businesses to get to know each other from one end of the county to the other,” said Vicki Northrup, CEO of Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber members sat at tables of eight, having 60 seconds to tell about themselves, their company and their products or services. Participants switched tables every 10 minutes according to a map and schedule until they were able to tell their stories and hear the stories of all 100 participants.

Other Chambers taking part were the Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida and the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Thomas Fulmer met his wife in Alabama and they now live about four streets away from where she grew up in Melbourne, but that’s not what makes him remarkable.

He loves dogs so much that he and his wife have rescued two mutts and the third, a Golden Retriever named Abbie, adopted him when she met Fulmer on the golf course. He is an avid animal rights supporter, but that is not what makes him remarkable.

Active in his community, Fulmer has been involved as a board member, financial supporter or volunteer for organizations such as Yellow Umbrella, Alzheimer’s Foundation, Humane Society and Take Back the Night. He is a strong advocate for victims of domestic abuse, but even that does not set him apart from others in his community or his generation.

Fulmer is a certified Human Behavior Consultant and currently serves as Chief Results Officer of Success Essentials Training Institute and is cofounder of The National Entrepreneurs Network. Impressive, yet when compared to others, the

author and business leader is just another community-minded individual until you take a moment to get to know him.

Tom Fulmer lives the philosophy he teaches.

“Continue to invest in yourself,” he said. “Seek to help others, because the more you give away, the more that comes back to you.”

He advises business leaders to feel less competitive toward their counterparts. “Helping others leads to better personal success.”

Rather than attending meetings to add to a growing collection of business cards, Fulmer advises others to connect with or meet people they don’t normally see every day. The once shy tennis pro decided to change his shyness, found ways to overcome his uncomfortable feelings and went on to create a power networking group of like-minded individuals who see beyond the competitive nature of small businesses.

He seems to always find the good in any situation, including the time he flew to Vermont for a four-day event and unpacked his suitcase, late at night, to discover he had not packed any pants. Rather than

“I get the most compliments on that one,” he said.

would have felt inconvenienced or perhaps angry with the weather, Fulmer recognized it as an interesting story he would be able to share.

But for us burn and peel types, it’s the greatest discovery since putting karaoke in bars to increase alcohol sales.

I know the dangers of the sun, being a fair skinned mostly bald man-cave dweller who rarely goes outdoors for any length of time between the months of May and September.

Oh, I’ll go out to get the mail but if I don’t have to, I’ll happily stay indoors and out of the sun. However, I recently was given a timeshare week on the beach and I just couldn’t refuse. I love the beauty of the beach, the relaxing sound of the waves and the nice looking members of the opposite sex who attempt to stay legally clothed while wearing less fabric than my right sock. My wife gets deep, dark tans while spending hours on the beach, but me? If I walk once around the pool, briskly, with anything less than SPF 45 covering my body, I burn. I’m a great believer in sunscreen, especially since they made it smell like piña coladas. I do my best to put sunscreen over every inch of exposed skin. Alas, I can only reach so far around to my back. With each passing year my reach decreases while the expanse increases. I could give up my pizza and beer diet. Nah! So the little inch or so that I can’t reach is bright red while the rest of me is normal color and that spot feels like I was just hit with the branding iron from the Ponderosa. When we apply the juice from the Aloe plant the pain stops but my shirt sticks to just that spot as if I applied super glue.

So when you go the beach this year, take your sunscreen but just as important, say hello to your aloe.

Al Graff lives surrounded by birds, but the West Melbourne resident doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t spend a nickel on birdseed, since his feathered friends are wooden carvings and not the real thing.

The little winged creatures look real, however, thanks to the considerable artistic talent of their creator. At 98, Graffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyesight has become a nuisance, but the sculptor continues carving birds out of basswood, as he has for decades.

The sculptures are detailed and delightful, even though Graff is self-taught.

His passion for carving birds was ignited in the 1990s, when Graff would spend six months out the year in North Carolina. With the newly found spare time afforded by retirement, Graff searched for hobbies he could pursue from his home near Hendersonville. In the small town not far from Asheville, Graff discovered Opportunity House, an old A&P grocery store that had been converted into an arts center. At Opportunity Houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s woodcarving studio, Graff found what he wanted.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had been fooling around with a lot of hobbies until I found carving,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The former tool and die maker took to carving birds as if he had been born for the job. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of satisfaction in the hobby,â&#x20AC;? said Graff.

Using photographs as the starting point, Graff creates flowing, realistic sculptures. He prefers to group the smaller birds into small flocks perched on driftwood. With glass eyes and delicately fashioned feet made from copper wiring, the little birds seem alert and ready to fly off at a momentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s notice.

He carves not to sell, but rather for artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake, and also for the benefit of others. Some of his sculptures have fetched thousands of dollars for charity.

Graff was the first president of Space Coast Wood Carvers, a 70-member club that shares the expertise of master carvers with beginners to the hobby.

Carving birds takes a considerable chunk of Graffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time, but the nearcentenarian still finds time to volunteer at Holmes Regional Medical Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It means a lot to me,â&#x20AC;? he said. SL

Art Griffin of the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches community outreach group and Jim Rufino of Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion are members of the Brevard Remembers 9/11 planning committee.

Family members and friends of loved ones lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks are invited to submit remembrances in a commemorative book that will be given out to the estimated 8,000 attendees of the Brevard Remembers 9/11 memorial at Space Coast Stadium in Viera on Sept. 11, the 10-year anniversary of the event.

Local churches, businesses, schools, military, police, fire and civic groups are hosting the event to honor first-responders and show appreciation to active and reserve military who have been responding ever since.

Proceeds from event sponsorships and advertisements in the book will be used to host a free veterans retreat in Viera this spring. The retreat will teach relationship skills to veterans returning from deployment and their spouses that can keep their families intact, resolve post-traumatic stress and reconnect with the community.

Should I consider becoming a board member of my association?

You may be asking yourself this question, or maybe someone else is urging to you to become a board member, you’re not quite sure how to go about it or are wondering what is involved. At your association’s annual meeting, election to the board is usually the main item. Some associations will have a difficult time finding board members and others will find themselves with hotly contested elections. This month’s column will endeavor to answer most commonly asked questions.

Why should I get involved?

Civic responsibility. Often, I compare the workings of an association to a local government. Just as your local government needs the participation of its residents, your association needs your involvement.

What are the qualifications?

Primarily, it’s your commitment and interest. Residents who feel they have no special expertise often are surprised to find out how fast they learn the responsibilities.

A good property manager or incumbent member will provide the necessary orientation for new members.

What are the responsibilities?

Space in the newspaper does not allow all details. Generally, the board is responsible to oversee the business affairs. This involves protecting and enhancing the common areas and assets. Association by-laws detail board responsibilities. Also, Florida condominium, homeowner, and not-for-profit corporation law has additional stipulations. If an association has any questions on the legal aspects, an attorney should be consulted.

Can you be more specific?

Each board will vary in the way it conducts business. Items of concern include conducting meetings, formulating and implementing the budget, overseeing vendors, enforcing rules and procuring insurance.

Who does the actual work?

Many associations hire a management company or an on-site manager who carries out the directives of the board. A good manager will also keep the board informed of any issue that requires attention. Some associations are self-managed by board and committees.

What do I do at board meetings?

Most important is to be prepared. The manager should have prepared a package of information before the meeting. Ask questions before the meeting. Be as objective as possible. Remain friendly and cordial. If the conversation becomes heated, remain calm and support the authority of the president. Be sure that all issues are thoroughly covered before decisions are made.

Serving on the board can be a rewarding experience if approached with the right attitude.

Fifteen male models rocked the runway in grand style for the Women’s Center North Guild in a fashion show held May 14 at the La Cita Country Club in Titusville.

“The fundraiser drew about 200 and raised about $18,000 from a dinner, silent and live auctions and private donations,” said Jenny Gessler, executive director of Women’s Center.

Dinner was catered by staff at La Cita Country Club.

Centerpieces made of long stemmed red roses, men’s ties and hats were created by guild volunteers to grace each table.

Gessler underscored the reason for the event: “The south Women’s Center opened its doors in Melbourne in 1975.

The demand has grown for services for up to 10,000 clients a year. Domestic violence is the number one cause of injury,” she said.

The north center opened its doors in 2010. A facility donated by the City of Titusville that will provide transitional housing for women who are victims of hunger, homelessness, domestic violence and sexual assault is on target to be operational this fall.

“The Women’s Center for abused women is near and dear to my heart. I have known and taught with two teachers who were abused and were killed by their husbands,” said Pat Manning, guild member and supporter. “Abusive relationships occur at all financial levels of our society; we must provide help for women of all ages. Our center will help in this goal.”

As the fashion show began, emcee Liz Mikitarian charged the crowd with the announcement, “Elvis is in the building!” when model Elvis Alfonzo, M.D. ruled the runway.

Organ donation: a matter of life, death—and generosity By linda S. HumpHrey

Janet McCrary manages a broad smile as she speaks about the day when she will cook a meal, take a shower or simply walk from her bedroom to the kitchen without gasping for breath. She longs to ride a bike and play with her nephews and nieces.

McCrary was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at 16 and quickly went from being a member of her high school dance troupe to a chronically ill student who was home schooled in order to complete her diploma. Following placement on an insulin pump, McCrary attended college away from home but was brought back to Melbourne after lapsing into a coma. She has had numerous hospital stays, eye surgeries, has been on feeding tubes due to gastro paresis, contends with retinopathy, neuropathy and renal failure. She is currently on dialysis three times a week and waiting to be placed on a kidney-pancreas transplant list at Florida Hospital in Orlando. When she remains stable — without infection for a designated period of time — she will be placed on the list. Physicians calculate that she will receive her organs quickly.

McCrary’s parents, Bill and Adele Conte, have championed the cause of getting their daughter well, and along with the National Foundation for Transplants, are working to raise funds to offset astronomical medical costs not

covered by insurance. On May 7, McCrary and the Contes met Bill Hahn, a 2010 kidney/pancreas recipient, and Jim Davis, a 2008 kidney recipient, at their home. Hahn and Davis were there to share their stories and bring encouragement to McCrary.

“I’ve been Janet’s basic caregiver and I have seen her in her good days. We all desire normal days for her,” said Adele Conte, “She’s been knocked down but refuses to give up. We are appreciative of all the help from the community.”

A committee, made up of friends and family, recently formed “Sunshine for Janet.” They held a successful bake sale on April 30.

“We have seen firsthand the open hearts of our community,” said Bill Conte. “I am humbled. Janet is my hero. I have never heard her ask why this is happening to her. She is strong and has a lot of faith.”

Davis and Hahn told McCrary to stay encouraged and know that after the transplant, she will once again be able to plan for her life.

McCrary said that she remains hopeful every day. “I am very optimistic,” she said. “If I let myself not be, then all of this has been for nothing. My time has come.”

In Raylene Coe’s case, the answer is, “yes.” Unless they happen to be referring to her actual child, Mikey, who plays with his 1-year-old nephew, Arthur Hicks, like he’s a baby brother.

“It’s an interesting experience,” Coe said of caring for both a grandchild and child so close in age. Since she and her children live near one another in Cape Canaveral, opportunities for taking care of both children are many.

Coe is married to her best friend since age 14, but the story is not that simple. In their youth, they shared a first kiss, and then…”

“It was too weird – like kissing my brother. We both knew we loved each other, but figured we were just destined

to be best friends,” Coe said. They went on to marry other people and have children, their oldest children just seven months apart in age.

Raylene’s husband died suddenly in 2001, and Russell Robert Coe came to console her after his marriage ended, still, just friends. In 2004, Russ got appendicitis and Raylene came to stay with him the hospital. They made a decision to get married before they shared their second kiss. When they finally gave it a whirl, before they knew it an hour flew by.

“We discovered we had an ability to kiss for long periods of time,” Raylene said. They put that talent to use and entered the WJRR FM 101.1’s annual Valentine’s Day kissing contest. After three years, they finally won first place after 10.5 hours of kissing nonstop.

She and Russ own a recording studio, Cocoa Studios, and they are

their own customers, playing in their own band. Even little Arthur has a role.

“We got him a little drum set for his birthday, but he prefers being held on Grandpa's lap so he can play on our big set,” Raylene said.

Raylene is an attorney and former juvenile-division public defender. She now works a dream job: keeping young adults out of the system to begin with.

As the the coordinator of the street outreach program for Crosswinds Youth Services, she drives from place to place in the “big purple jellybean” – the nickname for the purple outreach van with Crosswinds written on it on graffiti style. She lets young people know about opportunities to get their lives on track, especially those abandoned by their families.

“I thank God for this opportunity to help homeless youth,” she said. SL

Attempt to get them to agree to behave appropriately. Tell them if they bicker, you’ll leave the reunion and then do so if it happens.

3. Say nothing but, if they argue in front of you, speak up and/or do whatever makes you comfortable.

She gets to do all three in her job as a volunteer at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I get to hear peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stories about the wildlife theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve spotted, people who come here from all over the world for the spectacular birding,â&#x20AC;? Landry said of

Past the water treatment plant is an area where water is held for purification purposes trapped by earthen berms, where development will be forever banned for miles westward to the St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s River. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I get to help them find more interesting things to see and experience, and we get to do really fulfilling chores to maintain the wetlands,â&#x20AC;? Landry said at the second annual wetlands festival May 25.

The event featured many opportunities to give back to nature as a volunteer and receive back benefits manifold. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When people get older and lose a spouse, it often seems they lose their compass in life,â&#x20AC;? said Erin LeClair, recycling educator for Brevard County Solid Waste. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Volunteering is a great way to get your bearings back and get a new start on a rich life.â&#x20AC;?

Friends of Viera Wetlands is a newly formed volunteer group working to preserve, promote and support the enjoyment of the wetlands.

Green roofs industry on the rise By martha masiello

Green roofs, often called living roofs, eco-roofs and vegetated roofs are thin layers of living plants that are installed on top of conventional roofs.

Properly designed, they are stable, living ecosystems that imitate many of the processes found in nature. Green roofs vary greatly in weight, depending on their depth and the material components. Benefits include controling storm water runoff, erosion, pollution and acting as a natural filter for any of the water that does run off.

Runoff time is delayed, resulting in decreased stress on sewer systems at peak flow periods. Green roofs cool surrounding air, lessening the heat-island effect in urban areas and they reduce air pollution and capture carbon dioxide to help reduce global warming. They conserve energy and create wildlife habitats and have been reported to double the service life of a roof.

Extensive green roofs are fewer than six inches deep, while deeper intensive systems can nourish complex landscapes, including small trees and even small

ornamental ponds and fountains. These are often found on commercial properties. The benefits of green roof technologies are inadequately understood in North America, thus the market remains small; however in Europe, these technologies have become very well established. Costs depend upon many factors such as the depth of the system, height and accessibility from the ground, labor costs, need for specialized essentials such as railings, drains, pavers and slope stabilization measures.

While roofs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be alive to be considered green, certain inorganic materials can also make an existing roof greener.

The non-profit Cool Roof Rating Council recommends installation of roofing services to reflect sun's heat, while improving energy efficiency using the premise that a cool roof reflects the heat back to the sky.

An increasing number of cities are offering incentives to encourage homeowners, developers and local businesses to install green roofs on new and existing buildings.

Since Thomas Crapper invented the water closet (yes, that's where the word came from), many experts have come to view our sanitation system as the worst idea of all time.

We use 3.5 gallons (per flush) of our best drinking water to dilute a few ounces of â&#x20AC;&#x153;excellent fertilizer and soil conditionerâ&#x20AC;? to create an expensive, wasteful disposal problem.

The World Health Organization recently declared that waterborne sanitation is obsolete and only waterless disposal of waste will allow enough water for drinking, cooking and washing in the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest cities.

Waterless and low-flow toilets could save the average household as much as $50 to $100 a year on water, adding up to $11.3 million everyday nationally. These are not the same low-flow toilets that gained a well-deserved bad reputation 10 years ago. Technology has improved even the lowly crapper so that most new toilets use only about 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf).

Sweden has popularized a dual bowl toilet with separate compartments and separate ways of treating human waste. This system uses no water and results in a high quality fertilizer and composted human manure as byproducts. The separating toilets cost comparably to American toilets but may take a while to catch on. Dual flush toilets are becoming more popular here in the States, and offer users a choice of .8 gpf or 1.6gpf depending on the size of the job.

Composting toilets are completely waterless and can be self contained or attached to a whole building system. If you have many bathrooms, a whole building system

would be the most economical. It connects all the dry toilets to a single large compost tank usually in the basement. There is no sewer hookup, so the plumbing ends in the compost tank.

A self contained composting toilet is essentially a compost drum enclosed inside a toilet with a foldout handle and tray. Some also contain fans and vents to eliminate odors. We have both a low-flow toilet and a composting toilet in our home. It is interesting to see who goes where, and we often categorized our guests by their level of queasiness with our plumbing.

Once you get over the initial shock of â&#x20AC;&#x153;no water in the bowlâ&#x20AC;? it is easy to appreciate the simplicity of a composting toilet. Wood chips go in, tree food comes out.

Incinerating toilets are similar to composting toilets in that they are waterless. But they use electricity to incinerate human waste to a clean ash, eliminating both pathogens (good) and soil nutrients (bad).

Many of these alternatives are costly and require a bit of plumbing know-how to install. If you want to reduce your water use today: â&#x20AC;˘ Try putting a brick in your toilet tank to save up to 5 gallons of water per day. â&#x20AC;˘ Install a $5 Frugal Flush Flapper valve in your toilet, and conserve half your water with each flush. â&#x20AC;˘ Try a $1 Toilet Fill Cycle Diverter to save about half a gallon per flush. â&#x20AC;˘ Flush less often using the â&#x20AC;&#x153;yellow-mellowâ&#x20AC;? rule â&#x20AC;˘ Check your toilet for leaks that could waste more than 100 gallons of water per day. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and see if any colored water leaks into the bowl after a few minutes. SL

Brevard County’s Brevardians Responding As VoluntEers (BRAVE) program was honored at Brevard Community College’s Center for Service Learning’s 23rd Annual Recognition Event this month with an award for their outstanding contribution to student service and learning during the last academic year.

The BRAVE program received a Supervisor as Educator Award, which was given to a select few community partners. The Center for Service Learning has approximately 350 partners throughout the county and fewer than 10 percent were selected for the award.

“Brevard Community College’s recognition of our program speaks well to the efforts we are making to reach out and positively impact the experiences their students are receiving through their partnership with our program,” said Director of Human Resources Frank Abbate.

“BRAVE serves as an avenue for citizens to participate in Board of County Commissioners departments.

Volunteers and interns share their energy, skills and talents to make Brevard County a better place to live,” Abbate said.

Every Friday morning, the Wickham Park Senior Center (WPSC) turns into a computer and technology classroom.

Some seniors come to learn to use the Internet so they can connect with family and friends. Others want to master simple tasks to avoid scams.

Stacey Kile, owner of Simply Seniors Computer Tutor, who has taught basic computer classes at the center for two years, has a simple goal.

“Seniors are a vulnerable demographic and we already know they’re vulnerable to scams. I try to teach computer common sense, and such classes as Craigslist, Skype and Facebook,” she said.

“I love showing up and

helping out there and I made the classes extremely inexpensive and each comes with a book written by us,” Kile said.

“When I started, I decided to target seniors as there weren’t many other companies doing so and over the years I started to offer other services.”

With consistent growth for seniors wanting to explore and yearning for the information they keep hearing about, WPSC president Emmee Harmon-Hanna believes the computer classes are great for the ones who want to learn.

When asked if the classes have helped seniors at the center overcome their fear, Hanna said, “Absolutely.

The history of Father’s Day William Shakespeare said, It is a wise father that knows his own child.

While listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora Dodd first thought about “father’s day.” She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He raised all six children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington State.

Sonora realized the selflessness her father had shown while raising his children as a single parent. Since he had been born in June, she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Wash. on June 19, 1910.

Although President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day and President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential

proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day, it wasn’t signed into law until 1972, when President Richard Nixon made it permanent.
