PREFACE AARON S. WATKIN

EN Welcome to our exciting season 2017/18. We will be presenting 20 ballets, of which six will be premieres of works new to us, three will be world premieres and we are going on four international tours.

Beginning my 12th season as Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett, my focus within the company is nurturing a new generation of talent as well as promoting an established group of Soloists. My goal will be to challenge and inspire both our dancers and audience alike, with an enormous spectrum of diversity in dance. Introducing new choreographers and carving out our unique identity through new creations for our company is of utmost importance to me. Of our two premiere programs this season, the first titled »A Midsummer Night’s Dream« features for the first time to our stage, a work by one of the most iconic British choreographers, Sir Frederick Ashton. Ashton was instrumental in defining the English dance style and »The Dream« is one of his masterpieces. This program will also feature another British choreographer, David Dawson, currently one of the most innovative dance makers working in classical ballet. Dawson has built up a very close relationship to our company having created numerous ballets for us over the years. This time I have commissioned him to create to Vivaldi’s »The Four Seasons« recomposed by Max Richter. With our second premiere program titled »100°C« we will present two further new choreographers to our house. The first is American Justin Peck, currently resident choreographer of The New York City Ballet, who is one of the most sought after young neo-classical choreographers of

today. We open the program with one of Peck’s most poetic and engaging creations »Heatscape«. The second new face to our stage is one of the hottest names in the world of contemporary dance, award winning Israeli choreographer and musician Hofesh Shechter. I am thrilled to announce this world premiere, which will be his first creation for a German company. His visceral work is raw and intense, and challenges the spectator to ask probing questions about who we are. After our premiere of one of Jiří Kylián’s earliest works last season »Forgotten Land«, we will present one of his latest works »Gods and Dogs«. This sublime work of art explores his fascination with the behaviour of an individual searching to find their place in society.

I am very excited to present our company at The Joyce Theater, in New York City. The mixed-programme will highlight our company’s unique identity including works by David Dawson and Stijn Celis as well as a new creation by one of our Soloists and native New Yorker, Joseph Hernandez. Immediately following we will travel to Ottawa, Canada with my production of »Swan Lake« at The National Arts Centre, Southam Hall as part of the 150 th Anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. This tour has a personal resonance for me, as it is the first time I will return to my home country to present our company. Finally, to end the season we will present an evening of Forsythe works at the prestigious Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London.

DE Willkommen zu unserer Spielzeit 2017/18. Zwanzig Ballette stehen auf unserem Programm, davon sechs Premieren und drei Uraufführungen sowie vier internationale Tourneen.

In meiner 12. Spielzeit als Ballettdirektor des Semperoper Ballett möchte ich den Fokus auf den Aufbau einer neuen Generation talentierter Tänzer legen sowie auf die weitere Förderung bereits etablierter Solisten. Mein Ziel ist es, Tänzer und Publikum durch umfassende Vielseitigkeit gleichermaßen herauszufordern und zu inspirieren. Neue Choreografen vorzustellen und unsere besondere Identität durch für uns geschaffene Uraufführungen weiter zu prägen, ist mir höchstes Bedürfnis.

Die erste Premiere trägt den Titel »Ein Sommernachtstraum« und bringt zum ersten Mal ein Werk der britischen Choreografie-Ikone Sir Frederick Ashton auf unsere Bühne. Ashton war wesentlich an der Definition des englischen Tanzstils beteiligt und »The Dream« ist eines seiner Meisterwerke.

Dieser Abend präsentiert mit David Dawson einen weiteren britischen Choreografen, der aktuell als einer der innovativsten Tanzschaffenden im Bereich des klassischen Balletts gilt. Über die Jahre hat sich eine sehr enge Beziehung zwischen ihm und unserem Ensemble aufgebaut, innerhalb derer bereits mehrere Uraufführungen entstanden sind. Dieses Mal habe ich ihn beauftragt, zu Max Richters Re-Komposition von Vivaldis »Vier Jahreszeiten« zu kreieren. Mit unserer zweiten Premiere »100°C« stellen wir zwei weitere in unserem Haus bisher unbekannte Choreografen vor: Der gebürtige Amerikaner Justin Peck, Hauschoreograf des New York City Ballet, ist einer der gefragtesten neo-klassischen Choreografen unserer Zeit. Er studiert seine poetisch

fesselnde Schöpfung »Heatscape« bei uns ein.

Und der preisgekrönte israelische Choreograf und Musiker Hofesh Shechter gehört zu den »heißesten« Adressen der zeitgenössischen Tanzszene. Über seine Uraufführung freue ich mich besonders, ist sie doch die erste, die er für eine deutsche Company kreieren wird. Seine instinktiven Arbeiten sind intensiv und roh und fordern den Zuschauenden heraus, tiefgreifende Fragen darüber zu stellen, wer wir sind. Nachdem wir in der vorigen Spielzeit »Vergessenes Land«, eine frühe Arbeit Jiří Kyliáns, zur Premiere gebracht haben, zeigen wir nun »Gods and Dogs«, eine seiner jüngsten Choreografien. Es ist ein Werk, das geprägt ist von Jiřís Faszination für das Verhalten des Individuums, das seinen Platz in der Gesellschaft sucht.

Ich freue mich sehr darauf, unsere Company am The Joyce Theater in New York zu präsentieren, um dort die Identität unseres Ensembles mit Werken von David Dawson, Stijn Celis sowie einer Uraufführung unseres Solisten und gebürtigen New Yorkers Joseph Hernandez zu zeigen. Danach geht es gleich weiter nach Ottawa ans National Arts Centre. Im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten zum 150. Jahrestag der Kanadischen Konföderation präsentieren wir meine »Schwanensee«-Produktion. Diese Tour ist für mich wie eine persönliche Resonanz, da es das erste Mal ist, dass ich in mein Heimatland zurückkehre, um dort meine Ballettcompany vorzustellen. Am Ende der Spielzeit werden wir einen Ballettabend mit Werken von William Forsythe am renommierten Sadler’s Wells Theater in London präsentieren.

EN In view of its narrative wit and highly virtuosic physical vocabulary, Frederick Ashton’s adaptation of »A Midsummer Night’s Dream« (1964) soon became regarded as a milestone in the balletic interpretation of Shakespeare. Focussing on events in a forest outside Athens, humans and fairies alike cannot escape the enchantment of a summer night. Whilst Oberon, king of the fairies, intends to punish his queen, Titania, for her obstinacy with the nectar of a magic flower, two couples, lost not only in the forest but in their feelings for one another, are also bewitched. The spell is only broken when morning dawns and they awaken as if from a dream, finally recognising one another.

The fantastic ambient music of Max Richter’s reworking (2012) of »The Four Seasons« (1725) inspired the British choreographer David Dawson to create this meditation on the cycle of life. Four parts complete the circle, formed and reformed by the bodies of the dancers within the spatial complex of the room, which is divided into four elements.

The heart of the piece is mankind itself, buffered by change whether immobile or in movement, creating new dimensions of perception, energy and possibility in many timeless instances, caught between life and death, always anticipating and never knowing.

DE Frederick Ashtons Adaption des »Sommernachtstraums« (1964) avancierte durch seine hochvirtuose Bewegungssprache und den Witz seiner Erzählung zu einem Meilenstein der Shakespeare-Interpretationen im Ballett. Fokussiert auf die Ereignisse im Wald außerhalb Athens, sind Menschen wie Elfen dem Zauber einer Sommernacht ausgesetzt: Während Elfenkönig Oberon seine Königin Titania für ihren Eigensinn mit dem Saft einer Zauberblume bestrafen will, trifft die Magie auch zwei Liebespaare, die sich im Wald und in ihren Gefühlen füreinander verirren. Erst der Morgen und das Erwachen wie aus einem Traum lässt sie einander (wieder)erkennen.

Die fantastisch-sphärische Musik von Max Richters Neukomposition (2012) der »Vier Jahreszeiten« (1725) inspirierte den britischen Choreografen David Dawson zu einer Kreation über den Kreislauf des Lebens.

Vier Teile schließen diesen Kreis und formen ihn durch die Körper der Tänzer im Spannungsfeld des Raumes, vier Elementen zugeordnet, immer wieder neu. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Mensch, in Stillstand wie Bewegung steter Veränderung ausgesetzt, die in vielen zeitlosen Augenblicken immer neue Dimensionen von Wahrnehmung, Energie und Möglichkeit kreiert – zwischen Leben und Tod, stets ahnend und niemals wissend.

EN Justin Peck was a »boy wonder« of only 27 when his ballet »Heatscape« garnered attention in 2015. This »poetic and gripping creation« by »the most eminent choreographer of ballet in the United States« (according to the New York Times) combines a rich variety of steps with the highest musicality. »The work itself moves between abstraction and narration,« says Peck, »forcing the audience to form their own interpretation.« This ballet evening also features Jiří Kylián’s »Gods and Dogs« from 2008, in which the choreographer explores the border between normality and madness. He asks: »Where is the moment that pushes us over the invisible line into pathological madness, and who chooses it?« The reflection of such norms is also an artistic preoccupation of Hofesh Shechter. The Israeli’s breakthrough work was »Political Mother«, a furious examination of politics and society. »But,« writes Shechter, »anger can be a driving force in my work. I wish to share this with the audience by turning it into something constructive, something positive.« Regarding his new creation for the Semperoper Ballett, he promises an abundance of energy imbued with a »sense of thrust and impulse.

This will be a scintillating and restless piece, which is sure to leave a great impression!« The audience can certainly expect a blistering evening.

DE Erst 27 Jahre alt war »Boy Wonder« Justin Peck, als er im Jahre 2015 mit seinem Ballett »Heatscape« besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zog. Die »poetischste und fesselndste Kreation« des »bedeutendsten Ballettchoreografen der USA«, so die New York Times, überzeugte mit Reichtum an Schritten und höchster Musikalität. »Das Werk selbst«, so Peck, »bewegt sich zwischen Abstraktem und Narration und fordert das Publikum zum Interpretieren auf.« Dazu lädt auch Jiří Kylián mit »Gods and Dogs« aus dem Jahre 2008 ein, in dem sich der Choreograf mit Grenzgängen zwischen Normalität und Wahnsinn beschäftigt. AARON S. WATKIN Artistic Director

EN Born in Canada, Aaron S. Watkin graduated from the National Ballet School of Canada in 1988 winning the prestigious Erik Bruhn Award.

Watkin enjoyed a full career in dance beginning with leading classical companies including National Ballet of Canada, English National Ballet and Dutch National Ballet. After 7 years of the classical repertoire, he was invited by world renowned choreographer William Forsythe to become a Principal Dancer with Ballett Frankfurt. Watkin always admired the works of Mr. Nacho Duato and in 2000 joined his company, the National Dance Company of Spain.

In June 2002 Watkin was appointed Associate Artistic Director to Víctor Ullate Ballet. He was a personal choreographic assistant to Mr. William Forsythe, in charge of setting and rehearsing his ballets on dance companies throughout the world. Watkin was a guest teacher to many of Europe's leading dance companies and Artistic Associate Director of The Loft Dance Studio in Brussels, Belgium. Watkin was also Artistic Associate Director of the annual Dance For Life AIDS Benefit Galas at the Cirque Royal Theatre in Brussels, Belgium.

Aaron S. Watkin was appointed Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett in 2006. In 2007 he choreographed his first fulllength ballet production »The Sleeping Beauty«. Since then he has choreographed »La Bayadère« in 2008, »Swan Lake« in 2009, followed 2011 by »The Nutcracker« (with Prof.

Jason Beechey). He premiered his own creation of »Don Quixote« in 2016 at the Semperoper.

Seine Karriere als Tänzer begann er in namhaften Companies und tanzte u.a. am National Ballet of Canada, English National Ballet und Het Nationale Ballet. Nach sieben Jahren Tanz in klassischem Repertoire wurde er Erster Solist am Ballett Frankfurt unter William Forsythe. Seine Bewunderung für die Werke Nacho Duatos ließen ihn im Jahr 2000 zu dessen Ensemble nach Madrid wechseln.

2002 wurde er zum stellvertretenden künstlerischen Leiter des Víctor Ullate Ballett in Madrid ernannt. Als choreografischer Assistent William Forsythes war Aaron S. Watkin verantwortlich für die Einstudierung von dessen Choreografien weltweit. ­Aaron S. Watkins professionelle Erfahrung, sein exzellentes Wissen über das klassische Ballett, unterschiedlichste Tanzstile sowie seine Kenntnisse über zeitgenössische Arbeiten ließen ihn zu einem angesehenen Gastballettmeister führender europäischer Companies avancieren. Er war zudem verantwortlicher Teil der Künstlerischen Leitung des Loft D ­ ance Studios in Brüssel und leitete als Künstlerischer Co-Direktor die jährlich stattfindende AIDS-Benefizgala »Dance For Life« im Cirque Royal in Brüssel.

Seit 2006 ist Aaron S. Watkin Ballettdirektor des Semperoper Ballett . Er hat seine Company über die Grenzen Dresdens und Europas hinaus bekannt gemacht und zahlreiche namhafte Choreografen, allen voran William Forsythe, für die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Semperoper Ballett gewinnen können.

2007 choreografierte er mit »Dornröschen« sein erstes abendfüllendes Ballett, dem 2008 »La Bayadère«, 2009 »Schwanensee« und 2011 »Der Nussknacker« (gemeinsam mit Jason Beechey) folgten. In der Spielzeit 2016/17 kreierte er »Don Quixote« für seine Company.

Semperoper

EN Dresden and its majestic historic center are home to a cultural heritage of international significance. Precious paintings, leading musical ensembles and imposing buildings from diverse eras attract several thousand visitors each year. One of the world’s most famous musical venues can also be found in this city on the Elbe – the Semperoper Dresden .

Destroyed by the air raid on Dresden on February 13th, 1945, the Semperoper Dresden was ceremoniously reopened forty years later on February 13th, 1985. It is an institution with an international reputation, an outstanding ensemble and star guests from Germany and elsewhere. This is also the home of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, founded in 1548 by Prince Moritz of Saxony as his court orchestra, and thus one of the world’s oldest orchestras.

Steeped in musical tradition, the ensemble has been shaped by its many prominent directors: Heinrich Schütz and Carl Maria von Weber both worked here, while Richard Wagner called the Staatskapelle his miraculous harp. Richard Strauss was also closely linked to the orchestra for almost seventy years: nine of his operas saw their world premiere in Dresden, among them »Salome«, »Elektra« and »The Knight of the Rose«. The Semperoper honored the composer in 2014 in a variety of ways in celebration of his 150 th birthday.

Christian Thielemann is the Principal Conductor since 2012 and, in this capacity, directs symphonic concerts as well as musical theatre productions. The opera chorus, founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817, is well-known to audiences around the world through their many concerts and CD productions. During the directorship of Dr. Ulrike Hessler, the Young Scene, a further branch, established itself. This branch opens the opera house specifically to children and youths and is part of its efforts to successfully anchor the Semperoper within the city of Dresden.

In the 20th century, Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca were especially important in the establishment of Dresden’s reputation as a city of dance. The 1920s saw ballet at the Semperoper enjoy its first artistic flowering, to be followed by other great choreographies under artistic directors Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke and Vladimir Derevianko. Canadian born Aaron S. Watkin became the Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett in 2006. With a base of traditional full-length productions, modern dance, an all-encompassing repertoire, and world-class artists, the company sets new standards under his directorship.

Auch eine der berühmtesten Spielstätten der Welt hat in der Elbestadt ihren Sitz – die Semperoper Dresden. Beim Luftangriff auf Dresden am 13. Februar 1945 zerstört, konnte die Semperoper vierzig Jahre später, am 13. Februar 1985, feierlich wiedereröffnet werden. Sie ist ein Haus von Weltruf mit einem Ensemble von Rang und internationalen Gästen. Hier spielt die Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden,1548 als Hoforchester gegründet und damit eines der ältesten und traditionsreichsten Orchester der Welt.

Bedeutende Kapellmeister haben ihre Geschichte geprägt, darunter Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber und Richard Wagner, der das Orchester als seine »Wunderharfe« bezeichnete.

Richard Strauss war der Staatskapelle fast siebzig Jahre lang freundschaftlich verbunden und brachte hier neun seiner Opern zum ersten Mal auf die Bühne, darunter »Salome«, »Elektra« und »Der Rosenkavalier«. 2014 ehrte die Semperoper den Komponisten anlässlich seines 150.

Seit 2012 ist Christian Thielemann Chefdirigent der Staatskapelle und leitet in dieser Position Symphoniekonzerte ebenso wie Musiktheaterproduktionen. Der von Carl Maria von Weber 1817 gegründete und von 2009 bis 2014 von Pablo Assante geleitete Opernchor der Sächsischen Staatsoper ist ebenfalls durch Konzerte und CD-Produktionen über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus bekannt. Während der Intendanz von Prof. Dr. Ulrike Hessler etablierte sich außerdem eine weitere Sparte – die Semperoper Junge Szene. Sie öffnet die Semperoper seit 2010 auch für Kinder und Jugendliche und schließt sich den anderen Bereichen in ihrem Bestreben an, das Opernhaus fest in der Stadt Dresden zu verankern.

Dresdens Bedeutung als Tanzstadt und Wiege des modernen Tanzes wurde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts vor allem durch Mary Wigman und Gret Palucca begründet. In den 1920er Jahren erlebte auch das Ballett in der Semperoper einen ersten Höhepunkt. Es folgten große Choreografien unter den Ballettdirektoren Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke und Vladimir Derevianko. Seit der Spielzeit 2006 / 07 ist Aaron S. Watkin Ballettdirektor des ­Semperoper Ballett . Mit einem eindrucksvollen Repertoire auf der Basis von traditionellen Handlungsballetten, modernem Tanz und erstrangigen Künstlern aus der ganzen Welt setzt die Company unter ihm neue Maßstäbe.
